Help and support for new parents in the East Riding Being a new mum or dad is a wonderfully exciting time, but it can also bring many challenges. The additional pressures of the Covid-19 pandemic means that some new parents can find things especially difficult, but the East Riding Safeguarding Children Partnership wishes to reassure them that there is plenty of help available. Margaret Wood, East Riding Safeguarding Children Partnership manager, said: “If you are finding being a mum or dad overwhelming, please ask for help.

“Coping with a crying baby or young child can be incredibly hard and tiring, especially if you are on your own or you have other children to care for. “If you need support from someone close to you that you would usually ask for help, then go ahead and ask for it. If the person you would normally turn to is unavailable, your GP, health visitor, midwife and children’s centre team are all there to support you. “If you are relative, friend or neighbour and think someone needs help – reach out with support. “There are organisations in your community and online available to you. Please seek support, help

is there for you and your baby.” Although the current restrictions mean that some of the usual face-to-face support and groups in the East Riding are not running at the moment, there are plenty of resources available online to help parents. l For help with Coping with Crying, visit www.iconcope.org/parentsadvice l The East Riding Health and Wellbeing website has a range of advice and links to other resources www.eastridinghealthandwellbeing.co.uk l East Riding Children’s Centres regularly post updates on Facebook @erchildrenscentres or you can visit the website at www.eastriding.gov.uk/ living/children-and-families/childrens-centres/ whats-on-childrens-centres/ l The Humber Integrated Specialist Public Health Nursing (ISPHN) Service website can be found at www.humberisphn.nhs.uk l Another NHS site which has information for new parents is www. humbercoastandvalematernity.org.uk/after-thebirth/ l Every Mum Matters offers mental health support to new and expectant mums at www.everymummatters.com/

Literature

New books for January Starve Acre by Andrew Michael Hurley Starve Acre is a devastating new novel by the author of the prizewinning bestseller The Loney. Richard and Juliette Willoughby’s son, Ewan, has died suddenly at the age of five. Starve Acre, their house by the moors, was meant to be full of life, but is now a haunted place. Juliette, convinced Ewan still lives there in some form, seeks the help of the Beacons, a seemingly benevolent group of occultists. Richard, in an attempt to keep the boy out of his mind, has turned his attention to the field opposite the house, where he patiently digs in search of a legendary oak tree. This is a novel about the way grief splits the world in two and how, in searching for hope, we can so easily unearth horror.

Ready Player Two by Ernest Cline Lauren and her father Niall live alone in the Highlands, in a small village surrounded by pine forest. When a woman stumbles out onto the road

one night, Niall drives her back to their house. In the morning, she’s gone. In a community where daughters rebel, men quietly rage, and drinking is a means of forgetting, mysteries like these are not out of the ordinary. Lauren looks for answers in her tarot cards, hoping she might one day be able to read her father’s turbulent mind. Neighbours know more than they let on, but when local teenager Ann-Marie goes missing, it’s no longer clear who she can trust. In the shadow of the forest, Francine Toon captures the wildness of rural childhood and the intensity of small-town claustrophobia in this gripping thriller. The Betrayals by Bridget Collins At Montverre, an exclusive academy tucked away in the mountains, the best and brightest are trained for excellence in the ‘grand jeu’: an arcane and mysterious contest. Léo Martin was once a student, but lost his passion for the game following a violent tragedy. Now he returns in disgrace, exiled to his old place of learning with his political career in tatters. Montverre has changed since he studied there, even allowing a woman, Claire Dryden, to serve in the grand jeu’s highest office of Magister Ludi. When Léo first sees Claire, he senses an odd connection with her, though he’s sure they have never met before. But both Léo and Claire have built their lives on lies. And as the legendary ‘Midsummer Game’, the climax of the year, draws closer, secrets begin to swirl… The Last Resort by Susi Holliday When Amelia is invited to an all-expenses-paid retreat on a private island, the mysterious offer is too good to refuse. Along with six other strangers, she’s told they’re here to test a new product for Timeo Technologies. But the guests’ excitement soon turns to terror when the real reason for their summons becomes clear. Each guest has a guilty secret. And when they’re all forced to wear a memory-tracking device that reveals their dark and shameful deeds to their fellow guests, there’s no hiding from the past.

Residents and businesses in and around Goole are encouraged to share their thoughts on the ambitious and aspirational proposals to be detailed in a Town Investment Plan currently being developed. The proposals for Goole have a key focus on regenerating the town centre, and thoughts and comments can be submitted via the recently launched Goole Town Deal website at www. gooletowndeal.co.uk The Town Investment Plan is being developed by the Goole Town Deal Board in partnership with East Riding of Yorkshire Council and it is the route to securing up to £25million of

Develop enterprise opportunities l

l Increase leisure, recreation and sports offers l

l Enrich the town centre public realm and social spaces.

Town Deal funding will be even more important in the current climate, to aid the recovery of the town and its people following the COVID-19 pandemic. Joseph Richardson, chair of the Goole Town Deal Board, said: “Since the first meeting of the Board in March 2020, a key part of the preliminary work has been focused on identifying the best strategic projects that offer the greatest short-, mediumand long-term benefits for the communities and businesses in Goole. “The Board has been mindful of suggestions and ideas from the community in order to influence and prioritise interventions that continued on page 10

Local News will make a difference and lead to other things. “Due to COVID 19, face-toface consultation hasn’t been possible, and social distancing has prevented directengagement events from happening. With this in mind, others avenues have been explored to capture residents’ suggestions and ideas through social media and the My Town portal. We have also taken into account conversations Board members have had within their own industry sectors.”

10

As of December 2020, the My Town portal for Goole and the Facebook page has received over 200 comments, and these have been factored in to develop a long list of project ideas which, in turn, have been assessed to become a shortlist of capital interventions that the Town Deal Board would now welcome residents’ comments on the Goole Town Deal website. Councillor Richard Burton, leader of East Riding of Yorkshire Council, said: “The website gives its readers an opportunity to learn more about the hugely anticipated Town Deal and comment on the proposals people have said

matter to Goole. “All the latest information about the progress of the Town Deal will feature on the website, and it will be the place to access regular progress updates, and a place for the businesses and communities to continue help shape and rebuild a bright future for the town centre.” The Town Investment Plan will be submitted to the Government by Friday, 29 January 2021 and the outcome of the funding request is expected by 31 March 2021. Residents can register their comments by no later than Friday, 15 January 2021. Similar to the vast majority of towns which have already submitted their investment

plans in ‘cohorts one and two’ which focus on six to nine major capital proposals, Goole’s Town Investment Plan is likely to do the same. The Towns Fund, whilst not a grant giving scheme, is infrastructurefocused to achieve the objectives of the Town Deal. Gardening

January Jobs Winter Gardening Jobs Pruning. Some plants are best cut back and pruned over winter, such as roses, shrubs, fruit trees and deciduous hedges. This will encourage healthy new shoots to grow when the weather warms up again. Cleaning. While the life in your garden is less demanding, it’s a good opportunity to sort out a bit of general maintenance. Hosing down your paths and patios will not only spruce them up, but also ensure they’re free of grime which could become slippery in the cold, damp conditions.

14

Checking for structural damage. If you have a greenhouse, conservatory or shed then winter is the best time of year to give them a good inspection. Most of the surrounding foliage will have died back, leaving a clear path to see any cracks in the frames or broken window panes. Fixing these now is crucial for protecting any plants inside from freezing draughts. Ordering seed catalogues. Get prepared for the sowing season by choosing seeds and plants to buy. It’s a good time to sit back and plan how you might like to

Please mention

redesign your planting or reflect on which flowers grow best in your garden. Cutting the lawn. You won’t need to mow the grass anywhere near as frequently as in the summer, but if the weather is mild it will need doing every now and then. The grass won’t grow as fast, so you can leave it longer than normal. Winter Gardening Tips Don’t compact the soil. During wintertime, the ground will likely be saturated from excess rain and freeze due to the plummeting temperatures. It’s best to avoid treading on the earth too much as you will compact the already dense soil, making it even more difficult to work in the spring. So try to step lightly when you need to go over it. Maintain tools. There won’t be many labour intensive jobs to

do in the garden over winter so it’s a good opportunity to show your tools some TLC. Oil any machinery that requires it and sharpen the blades of your trimmers and secateurs. Then you’ll be all set for cracking on when the frost thaws. Keep watering. It’s easy to overlook watering your garden when the weather’s so rubbish this time of year. But it’s still important to go outside and give your plants a quick water every now and then, particularly if it hasn’t rained in a while. And don’t forget to water your indoor flowers too! Plan ahead. Winter is a great time to plan your garden design for the coming year. Most of the plants and trees have died back, leaving the core layout of your plot clear. Take advantage of this by mapping out new paths or patios, or deciding where to put that new shed or greenhouse.
