Call Out for Contemporary artists across the East Riding Contemporary artists are being sought for an outreach project within East Yorkshire..
Contemporary artists are being sought for an outreach project within East Yorkshire. The East Riding Visual Arts Uplift, working with the Humber Museums Partnership, is on the lookout for three contemporary visual artists to deliver workshops and sessions within schools and community settings during November, 2022 and February, 2023.
4
These workshops will respond to the project’s overarching theme, ‘The Wolds Around Me’ and will explore adapted interpretations of that theme. Successful artists will be invited to run sessions within local primary, secondary and SEN settings before opening the offer up to wider community groups. Each artist will receive a fee of £2000 and within that is expected to run 8-10 workshops across the delivery period. The finale of the project will see multiple groups come together for a collaborative exhibition in Spring, 2023.
The project aims to take contemporary art to the young people of East Yorkshire, exploring ‘The Wolds Around Me’ from the past to the present day, embracing heritage and history with a contemporary twist. Artists across the region and beyond are being asked to submit their ideas, with the open call running until 24 June, 2022. This project is a part of The East Riding Visual Arts Uplift’s commitment to showcasing and integrating contemporary art into the region. As part of the programme, three artists have been commissioned so far, with works being displayed in Beverley Art Gallery and Sewerby Hall and Gardens.
The current artistic commission, ‘Kin’ by Marianne Walker, can be viewed in the East Wing of Sewerby Hall, exploring the shared cultural and archaeological histories found in the landscape of East Yorkshire. Nial Adams, the council’s museums manager, said : “This is a very exciting opportunity for local contemporary artists to get involved and make a real difference for children in the East Riding.” The closing date for Expressions of Interest is Friday, 24 June, 2022. Please email Lauren at Lauren@mudstresscoffee.com for an application form.

Recipe
Thai Chicken Grill
Give this delicious recipe a try on the Jubilee weekend it won’t disappoint. Serves 4 Hands-on time 15 minutes, plus overnight marinating and resting Grill time 1½ hours
pestle and mortar, then mix in the fish sauce and soy sauce.
Specialist kit Spice grinder or pestle and mortar; kitchen scissors; barbecue
2 Spatchcock the chicken by cutting either side of the backbone with kitchen scissors. Remove the bone, turn the bird over, then open it out and press down firmly with the heel of your hand to flatten). Rub the marinade all over the chicken, then cover and marinate in the fridge overnight.
Ingredients • 2–2.5kg whole free-range chicken • Steamed rice and lime wedges to serve For the marinade • 3 tbsp chopped coriander, roots and stalks
6
• 1 garlic bulb, cloves peeled • 2 tbsp light brown sugar • 30g fresh turmeric, grated • 2 tsp white peppercorns • 3 tbsp fish sauce • 1 tsp dark soy sauce For the nam jim jaew • 1 tbsp glutinous (sticky) rice • 2 small Thai shallots (or 1 regular shallot), thinly sliced • 1 spring onion, green part only, thinly sliced • 2 tbsp fish sauce • 1-2 tbsp light brown sugar • 3-4 tbsp lime juice • 1 tbsp chilli flakes (or to taste)
Method
1 To make the marinade, pound the coriander roots and stalks, garlic, sugar, turmeric and peppercorns to a paste in a

3 Toast the glutinous rice in a pan or wok over a medium heat for about 10 minutes, stirring continuously to stop it burning. It should have an even golden colour. Let the rice cool, then grind to a coarse powder in a spice grinder/pestle and mortar. You want to retain some of the crunchy texture, so take care not to grind it too finely. 4 When you’re ready to cook, prepare the barbecue for indirect cooking with the coals banked to one side. When the coals are ready, almost close the vents, leaving just a small gap at the top and the bottom. Wipe any large clumps of marinade off the chicken and cook the bird away from the coals, breast side up, with the legs facing towards the hotter side, for 1½ hours. You may
need to move the chicken during cooking so it barbecues evenly. 5 To make the nam jim jaew, combine all the ingredients with the toasted rice powder in a bowl. Let the chicken rest somewhere warm for 15 minutes before serving it with the dipping sauce, steamed rice and lime wedges. No BBQ: Heat the oven to 180°C fan/gas 6. Put the marinated chicken in a large roasting dish or lipped baking tray and cook, skin-side up, for 50 minutes or until the juices run clear, or a probe thermometer pushed into the thickest part of the thigh reads 70-72°C. Complete the recipe. Ingredient Tip: I always use fresh turmeric but you can swap 2 tsp dried turmeric for 30g fresh. Top Tip: Store leftover nam jim jaew in a jar in the fridge for several days. Use as a dressing for salads or meat.

Architectural Salvage? Rob Walls and Janette Wilkinson share their love of all things collectable... Rob
Do you call it ‘Garden Antiques’? Or is it architectural salvage, industrial ware, or upcycling?
8
Whatever you decide, garden antiques are a big area to look at. The obvious ones include statues, gate posts and fountains. If items are made from stone, they will be expensive and fetch a premium at auction. However, reconstituted stone, concrete or earthenware are more affordable. Gnomes and chimney pots are quite common items to find in gardens, and they do make a good feature. A pair of chimney pots, preferably different heights, look good but an individual pot placed with plants growing from them and around them also make a statement. The use of reclaimed stone and blocks, and the use of coping stones makes for good edging. My own garden has two terracotta lions guarding a summer house. They do require maintenance and I have to paint them to protect them from the hard winter frosts. As my garden matures, the chimney pots and reclaimed stoneware fit into it much better.
Janette
I really dislike gardening! However, like many people, I did

make an effort to sort out the garden during the beginning of lockdown in April 2020. I decided that I wanted my garden to have that country cottage feel to it. I dug, weeded, and then planted all sorts of plants of various shapes, sizes and colours. To add interest, I have added various finds. I have two chimney pots, both planted up with overflowing plants. I have a broken pot that looks as though it is partially buried with greenery cascading from it. A couple of old stone slabs add interest as well as beginning useful as stepping-stones. Once car boots started again, I managed to purchase an old metal dustbin and lid that now acts as a store for bird food. I have also acquired a vintage watering can that I use as a mini water butt. I did have a metal garden table and chairs that I left out to rust and wear. They now add that rustic feel as well as being somewhere to sit.
R and J Top Tips
l Reclaimed timber will add age and colour to your garden. l Wood preservatives come in a range of colours and used well will complement the natural colours in your garden. l Use industrial salvage – the use of old equipment for garden features includes metal signs for the wall, planters from oil drums, tin baths, metal watering cans and feeding troughs. l To prolong the use of a metal item (those not galvanised) rub down and apply primer.
l Look at the size of the item you are buying for the garden and consider whether it is too big. A number of smaller items together can have the desired effect.
l Make sure that there is enough drainage in your reclaimed planters; drill holes in drums, baths etc for the water to drain and the plants to grow properly.
l Reconstituted stone and concrete items can be buried for 6 to 12 months to give it a look of age.
l Victorian tables, chairs, benches, bird baths and sun dials are very expensive and do not come on the market very often. There are some excellent reproductions available.
l Railway sleepers and barrels are standard in many gardens, and with natural aging will blend in well. l The use of old baskets, crates and drawers will make good planters.
l Be wary of items that look too old and covered in lichen and moss. Items can be made to look old by painting with yogurt as this encourages lichen and moss to grow on them.

New books for June
10
Thrown by Sara Cox Thrown is the debut novel from much-loved broadcaster Sara Cox. The inhabitants of the Inventor’s Housing Estate keep themselves to themselves. There are the friendly hellos when commutes coincide and the odd cheeky eye roll when the wine bottles clank in number 7’s wheelie bin, but it’s not exactly Ramsay Street. The dilapidated community centre is no longer the beating heart of the estate that Becky remembers from her childhood. So the new pottery class she’s helped set up feels like a fresh start. And not just for her. The assorted neighbours come together to try out a new skill, under the watchful eye of their charismatic teacher Sasha. And as the soft unremarkable lumps of clay are slowly moulded into delicate vases and majestic pots, so too are the lives of four women. Concealed passions and heartaches are uncovered, relationships shattered and formed, and the possibility for transformation is revealed. Sedating Elaine by Dawn Winter Frances was not looking for a relationship when she met Elaine in a bar. She was, in fact, looking to drown her sorrows in a pint or 12 and nurse a broken heart, shattered by the gorgeous Adrienne. But following a steady stream of beer and weed, Elaine ends up in Frances’s bed and never leaves. Now, faced with mounting pressure from her drug dealer Dom (and his goon Betty), Frances comes up with a terrible idea: she asks Elaine to move in with her for real. Unfortunately, this seemingly romantic overture makes Elaine even more sex-crazed and maniacal with love. Frances fears she may never escape the relationship so she makes the obvious decision: she will sedate Elaine. A story as enthusiastically madcap and funny as it is smart and emotionally surprising, Sedating Elaine introduces a roster of unforgettable characters – which make for an unforgettable read.

Book Lovers by Emily Henry Emily Henry is the author of recent romantic comedies Beach Read and You & Me on Vacation, both of which were New York Times bestsellers. Nora is a cutthroat literary agent at the top of her game. Her whole life is books. Charlie is an editor with a gift for creating bestsellers. And he’s Nora’s work nemesis. Nora has been through enough break-ups to know she’s the one men date before finding their happy-ever-after. To prevent another dating dud, Nora’s sister has persuaded her to swap her city desk for a month’s holiday in Sunshine Falls, a small town straight out of a romance novel. But instead of meeting sexy lumberjacks, handsome doctors or cute bartenders, Nora keeps bumping into Charlie. Can they take a page out of an entirely different book? Brimming with banter, characters you can’t help but fall for and off-thecharts chemistry, Book Lovers is a perfect summer read. An Olive Grove In Ends by Moses McKenzie Sayon Hughes, a young Black man from Bristol, dreams of a world far removed from the one in which he was raised: torn slips outside the bookie’s; the burnt spoons and the crooked solutions his community embraces; and most of all, the Christianity of his uncaring parents and the prejudice of law makers. Growing up, Sayon found respite from the chaos of his environment in the love and loyalty of his brother-in-arms, Cuba; in the example of his cousin Hakim, a man once known as the most infamous drug dealer in their neighbourhood, now a proselytising Muslim; and in the tenderness of his girl, Shona, whose own sense of purpose galvanises Sayon’s. In return, Sayon wants to give the people he loves the world: a house atop a grand hill in the most affluent area of the city, a home in which they can forever find joy and safety. But after an altercation in which a boy is killed, Sayon finds his loyalties torn and his dream of a better life in peril.

Gardening
June Veg With no risk of frost - many vegetable, herb and flower seeds can be directly sown outdoors, while earlier sowings can now be planted out after a period of acclimatisation (hardening off) to outside conditions. Vegetables to plant
12
Beetroot If you’re new to growing vegetables, beetroot is a good, easy-to-grow option. The seeds don’t need much encouragement to germinate and they require little maintenance once established.
Beetroot ‘Boltardy’ is one of the most popular cultivars to grow, but you could also try a more unusually coloured cultivar, such as ‘Touchstone Gold’. Sow seeds direct in shallow drills or pots. Now’s also the time to plant out pre-sown beetroot plugs outside – make sure you plant them before the roots develop or they will grow into unusual shapes.

drills of well-prepared, stone-free soil, or in pots.
Sweetcorn May is the last time to sow sweetcorn, to give the plants plenty of time to grow and ripen. For best results, sow in a multi-celled tray indoors and plant out when the seedlings are large enough to handle. Any sweetcorn plants sown in April can be planted out now, after a period of hardening off. Cucumber Cucumbers do best in a greenhouse but some newer varieties have been bred to tolerate outside conditions. Sow into multi-celled seed trays or individual pots and pot on when seedlings are large enough to handle. Sprouting broccoli An extremely robust crop, sprouting broccoli produces nutrient-packed, succulent spears, which are perfect for steaming, boiling and grilling. It’s easy to grow, and if you grow different varieties, you can harvest broccoli spears throughout winter and into spring. Sow into seed trays or small pots and pot on until they’re ready to plant out. Carrots Carrots are a fantastic, easy-togrow crop to raise from seed. As well as the classic orange cultivars, you could also try growing colourful cultivars such as ‘Yellowstone’. Sow into shallow
Courgettes Courgettes can be direct-sown in well-prepared soil outside or in pots or multi-celled trays for transplanting later on. They also work well in containers. Plants sown last month can also be planted out now, once acclimatised. Protect young plants from slugs and snails and water regularly. Courgettes are hungry crops – feed them weekly once they’ve started flowering.
Rocket Rocket is a quick-growing crop that takes up little space. Perfect for pots, direct-sow seeds on the surface of moist, multi-purpose compost and protect emerging seedlings from slugs and snails. Make regular sowings every few weeks for a continuous crop throughout summer, and harvest as and when you need to.
French and runner beans French beans and runner beans can be sown direct outside now – dwarf French cultivars are suitable for growing in pots. Support climbing beans with a teepee of canes. Any beans sown in pots or multicelled trays last month can be planted out now after a period of hardening off – do protect young plants from slugs and snails.

14
Do you every look back on your day, your week or your month and ask yourself: “What have I done well? What have I achieved?” To be honest, it’s not something I’m very good at myself, but it’s something I want to get better at because when you do reflect on what you’ve done, you realise that you should actually be pretty proud of yourself. At that point, though, you have to work out how you’re going to celebrate your win. And when I’m talking about ‘wins’, I’m talking about small wins as well as big ones. Yes, it might be that you’ve won a new client or two at work or you’ve successfully completed a project (and that’s brilliant!) but it might also be that you’ve helped your son or daughter learn to ride their bike or you’ve been there for them, supporting them, as they’ve been revising for their exams. If you’re struggling, feeling down about something or you’re grieving, it might be that you’ve managed to get out in the fresh air today and go for a walk in the woods or your local park. Or maybe you’ve lost a couple of pounds because you’re eating healthier foods and exercising a bit more. Whatever it is, celebrate your win. Fist pump the air, dance to your favourite song in the kitchen (for me, it’s most things by Abba or currently I’m enjoying Shake it off by Taylor Swift! What can I say?
Please mention
Many years ago, I lived in York for a few years and I planted a little herb garden. I don’t know why, but when I moved over to the East Riding, I never thought to take cuttings and I’ve never got around to recreating it – until now! I told you last month about the outdoor kitchen my husband is building for us (and I love it!) and I’m finally going to plant a new herb garden. I am so excited! So far, I’ve got rosemary and basil. I use them such a lot in my cooking. I’m thinking I need some thyme, sage and oregano next as well as coriander, parsley and mint. Maybe even some chamomile – I like a soothing cup of chamomile tea. Do you grow herbs? What are your favourites and how do you grow them? Pots? Window box? Raised bed? If you have any tips, I’d love to hear them.
WHAT ARE YOU WATCHING?
I really need to go to the cinema. I’ve missed the new Downton Abbey film and haven’t seen the latest Dr Strange instalment either. I also need to see Top Gun Maverick as soon as possible! There’s been a lot going on and I haven’t had the chance. In the meantime, I’m looking forward to watching the new Obi-Wan Kenobi series on television, then later in the year, the Game of Thrones spin-off House of the Dragon and the Lord of the Rings series (although I’m a bit worried I won’t like it because the films were so amazing!). What are you watching? Suggestions always welcome! Have a great June everyone!
