Welcome to DNfourteen Magazine Welcome to our July 2021 edition of the magazine I hope that you are all keeping safe and well during these difficult times. I am very hopeful that we can continue moving forward with local businesses and the economy as more restrictions are going to be lifted later this month. Do it for East Yorkshire Community Grant Scheme launches Voluntary and community groups across East Yorkshire will now be able to benefit from further funding to help them get back to business through the Do it For East Yorkshire Community Grants.
The small grants scheme, funded by East Riding of Yorkshire Council, is intended to enable Town and Parish councils, voluntary and community sector organisations and others to: l hold events and festivals l organise COVID recovery community activity l extend access to services, all intended to encourage residents back onto high streets and to utilise arts, cultural and community facilities.

The grants scheme is now open for applications, in line with the Government’s current road map which aims to see a lifting of most remaining restrictions in July. The total grant fund is currently £250,000, made up of £200,000 from the council’s budget and an additional £50,000 from the council’s public health team. This additional budget is particularly aimed at supporting vulnerable residents to participate in planned activities, particularly those who have been shielding and might need additional support to get involved.

These days most homeowners suffer from a lack of storage space. So many precious items that need to be kept – but where to store it all? That’s where Yorkshire Loft Ladders come in. The company, based locally, offers homeowners the opportunity to maximise their storage space with a loft ladder, 50 sq ft of boarding and a light all fully fitted in less than a day from just £277 + VAT. Quality in the materials that we use for all our installations and the fact that all our loft packages are fitted by time served tradesmen so our customers are assured of the best job. Integrity in that we will turn up at the time we say and make sure the house is spotless when we leave, and Value in that we offer our services at a price people can afford. Literature
New books to read in July Careless by Kirsty Capes Written with empathy and compassion, Kirsty Capes’ debut novel charts the coming-of-age of Bess – teenage, pregnant and living on the edge of society – and what it means to be young and neglected in 21st-century Britain. Sometimes it’s easy to fall between the cracks. At 3:04pm on a hot, sticky day in June, Bess finds out that she’s pregnant. She could tell her social worker Henry, but he’s useless. She should tell her foster mother, Lisa, but she won’t understand. She really ought to tell Boy – the 19-year-old responsible – but she hasn’t spoken to him in weeks. Bess knows more than anyone that love doesn’t come without conditions – but this isn’t a love story.

Early Morning Riser by Katherine Heiny Jane easily falls in love with Duncan: he’s charming, good-natured and handsome. He has also slept with almost every woman in Boyne City, Michigan. Jane sees Duncan’s old girlfriends everywhere – at restaurants, the grocery store, even three towns away. While she might be able to come to terms with dating a prolific seducer of women, she wishes she didn’t have to share him quite so widely. His ex-wife, Aggie, still has Duncan mow her lawn and his co-worker Jimmy comes and goes from Duncan’s apartment. Jane wonders how the relationship is supposed to work with all these people in it. But any notion

Jane has of love and marriage changes with one tragic accident. Now her life is permanently intertwined with Duncan’s, Aggie’s and Jimmy’s, and she knows she will never have Duncan to herself. But is it possible that a deeper kind of happiness is right in front of hers? Malibu Rising by Taylor Jenkins Reid Set in Malibu in 1983, this highly anticipated novel is Taylor Jenkins Reid’s follow-up to her acclaimed debut Daisy Jones & The Six. It’s the day of Nina Riva’s annual end-of-summer party, and anticipation is at a fever pitch. Everyone wants to be around the famous Rivas: Nina, a talented surfer and supermodel; brothers Jay and Hud, one a championship surfer, the other a renowned photographer; and their baby sister, Kit. The children of legendary singer Mick Riva, the siblings are a source of fascination in Malibu and the world over. By midnight the party will be completely out of control – and by morning, the Riva mansion will have gone up in flames. Malibu Rising is a story about one unforgettable night in the life of a family: a moment where they each have to choose what they will keep from the people who made them – and what they will leave behind. The Lucky Escape by Laura Jane Williams The Lucky Escape is the third novel from Laura Jane Williams, and having loved both Our Stop and The Love Square, we’re anticipating another great summer read. When the day finally comes for Annie to marry Alexander, the last thing she expects is to be left standing at the altar. She was so sure he was Mr Right. Now, she has no idea how she could have got it so wrong. After a chance meeting with Patrick, an old friend who reminds her of who she used to be, Annie takes a vow of her own: she’ll say yes to every opportunity that comes her way from now on. Could a spontaneous trip with Patrick be the way to mend Annie’s heart? She’s about to find out as she embarks on her honeymoon – with a man who’s not her husband.

Home & Garden
Gardening Tips for July Summer can still throw out a few surprises - make sure tall plants and climbers are well supported in case of bad weather. Water at dusk to reduce evaporation and use mulch to retain moisture around plants. Terracotta pots are prone to evaporation so dampen the pot down to keep roots inside cool and damp. Regularly deadhead bedding and perennial plants to encourage new blooms for as long as possible.
In the flower garden Cut back geraniums and delphiniums after the first flush flowers to encourage new growth and further blooms.

Cut back faded perennial plants to keep borders tidy. Cutting back growth in hanging baskets can encourage new flowers and foliage and will revive the display. Make sure you feed your baskets well after doing this. Continue to tie in and train new growth on climbing plants. Prune wisteria now. Just remove the whippy side-shoots from the

main branch framework to about 20cm from their base (about five leaves from the main stem). Prune lupins to encourage more flowers. Deadhead your roses to keep them looking tidy. Leave the flowers in place if your rose produces attractive hips (seed pods). Deadhead sweet peas regularly to keep them blooming. Water daily in dry weather.
In the vegetable garden It’s time to pick your courgettes Regular picking encourages more fruit.
squash and courgette plants to encourage branching. Pinch out tomato side shoots each week. Cut off any leaves growing below the lowest ripening fruit trusses to improve air circulation and prevent diseases. Boost your tomato crop by regularly feeding plants with dilute tomato fertiliser once a week. If leaves look pale and yellow, feed more regularly. Feed crops with a general purpose fertiliser. Harvest garlic when the tops start to bend over and yellow.
Pepper plants will benefit from being potted on into progressively larger pots. Train cucumber stems upwards to make the most of the space available. Simply tie in their long stems to vertical wires or use cane supports to create a wigwam of poles. If you’re growing aubergines, pinch out the growing tip once they have 5 or 6 fruits. Pick fruits while they are young. You can expect to start harvesting mid to late summer. Nip off the growing tips of
Pick runner beans regularly to prevent them becoming stringy and to make room for developing pods. Harvest beetroot, peas, carrots, chard, potatoes, salad leaves, lettuce and tomatoes this month.

What’s On
East Riding Health Walks have relaunched Volunteer walk leaders have put their walking boots back on and are keen to welcome walkers back to their walks! East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s programme of Health Walks has been re-launched in line with government guidelines to encourage people to get out and about and enjoy the natural beauty of the area, whilst staying fit and healthy.
12
Walks are short and over easy terrain and are open to everyone, but are especially aimed at those who are least active. There are 22 different walk locations, offering a variety of lengths, supported by a team of friendly, specially trained volunteers who are on hand to provide encouragement and support, and make sure no one gets left behind. Many walkers start walking to improve their health but find it easy to keep coming back because of all the new friends they have made. As well as all the

physical health benefits, walking for health is also excellent for your social life. Laura Hutchinson, Health Lifestyles Development Officer, said: “ Walking at a brisk pace for as little as ten minutes per day can lead to massive health benefits by lowering the risk of type 2 diabetes, cardio vascular disease, dementia and some cancers. Joining our walks provides a safe environment for everyone to enjoy walking and exploring our natural environment.” East Riding Health Walks welcome new walkers throughout the year. Over 70 walks take place each month, starting from a variety of locations around the East Riding of Yorkshire. If you’d like to walk with any of East Riding’s Health Walk
groups, or train as a Volunteer Walk Leader, please contact the Scheme Co-ordinator, Laura Hutchinson, by phone on 07887 653489 or email laura. hutchinson@eastriding.gov.uk. You can also see the full programme and find out about other health walks in your area by logging on to https://www2. eastriding.gov.uk/leisure/sportand-play/clubs-and-activities/ activities-for-adults/ For longer, more challenging walks, why not try The Ramblers?
