Welcome to DNfourteen Dear Readers, Welcome to the March edition of your DNfourteen Magazine. This month we celebrate Mother’s Day – so to all you Mum’s out there, we hope you have a wonderful day! If you are stuck for ideas on what to buy or how to treat your ‘special mum’, take a look at the feature on Mother’s day for some inspiration and the great news is, they are all available from your local suppliers. Why not check out our article on new research into sleep and how much sleep we really need! In our gardening feature for March we take a look at herbs. I love having herbs in the garden, not just so I have them on tap for cooking, but they also make an interesting addition to any garden and the good thing with herbs is, you don’t need a large space to grow them, you can even grow them on a window ledge if you don’t have outside space. Feeling lucky? Then why not enter our competition this month to win tickets to see live wrestling at the Motorpoint Arena in Sheffield. This is a great show and is always very popular, so get your postcards sent in now! In the April edition we will be looking at House & Home, with ideas to inspire you to get some of those jobs done around the house, that have been on the back burner during the winter. It is also National Pet Month in April, so we will be honoring our furry friends and some not quite so furry. And finally… Remember, we love to hear from you so if you have a story to tell please do get in touch. Kind regards

Mobile Survey
Local MP Andrew Percy has been campaigning for improved mobile phone coverage across the Brigg & Goole constituency following concerns raised by local residents. Andrew surveyed thousands of residents in some of the areas with the poorest coverage, as well as posting the survey online. Andrew says, “There has been an enormous response and I’m grateful to residents for completing the survey. The results are now in and it’s now even clearer that there are real issues across the local area. Across the constituency, 70% of respondents reported no call and text coverage or issues with call and text coverage.

In the Marshlands, 66% of respondents reported no call and text coverage or issues with call and text coverage. For 3G internet and data coverage, 86% responded to say they either had no coverage or some issues. Just 14% said they had no problem with their 3G coverage. In Snaith, Airmyn and Rawcliffe, 50% of residents reported no call and text coverage or issues with call and text coverage. When asked about 3G internet and data coverage, 72% responded to say they either had no coverage or some issues. Just 28% said they had no problem with their 3G coverage. I secured a debate in Parliament on this and raised residents’ concerns with Ministers. The Government has now struck a deal with the mobile networks which will see the networks invest £5bn improving coverage across the UK by the end of 2017. Ministers believe this should increase call coverage across the East Riding and North Lincs to 99%. Thanks to the survey results I now have a much clearer picture of where the problem areas are locally and which To contact

DN14 ‘MOTHER’S DAY’ SUN 15th MARCH Mother’s Day is here again. It is one of the most popular of all such days that honour relationships. Of the many people who add value to our lives, a mother is undoubtedly the most special. Whether it is your own mom or someone you look up to, the basic thought behind Mother’s Day is expressing yourself to that someone who has been with you throughout your life.
Clothes for the Well Dressed Lady Your mother is someone who loves dressing up on occasions and even without them. She is probably the person whom you consult whenever you have to take decisions regarding the latest in fashion and the trends in clothes. Maybe she is just particularly well turned out and concerned about making the right impression.
One of the ways of letting her know that she is indeed valued by you is by gifting her on Mother’s Day (sending Mother’s Day gifts, giving gifts on this occasion). The most basic essential to be understood before going gift shopping on Mothers Day is the personality type of your mum.
Simply said, the choice of a Mother’s Day present for her is what make sher look beautiful and pleasingly attractive. Gift her clothes which might range from a new dress to gym wear, from formals to informals..
Is your mother working or a homemaker, outgoing or a homebody, loves to travel or do gardening or maybe loves fashion or shopping every few days. If you have analysed or observed closely her nature and preferences, then choosing the perfect gift for her becomes easy. Here we present some gift ideas for a mother who has a modern outlook and lifestyle.
Latest Gadgets for the Techno Savvy Mum Have you noticed that she, your mom, loves moving with the times and always feels that time is short for anything and everything that she might want to do. Or maybe, she wants to or needs to accomplish the maximum possible in a short period. Then, this Mother’s Day show her how much you care, gift her something that assists her in her daily and long term challenges.

Gadgets which make the work around the house easier or make it easier for her in balancing her home and work life. Be it kitchen ware or an electronic personal care product or planners and communicators, all come under this category of gifts. Art Work or Collectibles for Your Mum For someone who is accomplished in her own right, who has her own identity for the world to recognise and appreciate, a hobby of art or music is a natural outcome which brings him/her full circle to a wholesome life. Even if her busy schedule and forward thinking and quick acting approach make it difficult for your mom to appreciate the small pleasures in life like collecting art or music or decorating and designing, still a gift of art or other valuable collectibles can be and should on your list of Mother’s Day gift ideas.
sought after holiday. Why do you not be the one to give her this. It would be the most beautiful surprise and one much appreciated by her for a long time to come.
She is sure to love you for making this occasion extra special and memorable for her. It would also mean a rare time off without the daily work and chores and duties to bother her and a time spent with loved ones. From a A Holiday as a Mother’s Day Gift weekend getaway to a day trip to a much longer holiday, After a period of hard work and keeping up to the demands every option has its pros and cons, go for one which suits of a busy life, the least our mothers deserve is a long your mothers and her family which includes you. It’s all about You
How much sleep do I need and is more than eight hours really dangerous?
New research has suggested that people who sleep for more than eight hours a day are more likely to have a stroke, adding to a wealth of advice and information about the optimal time to spend in bed. The new warning may seem farfetched, but it comes from a comprehensive study carried out at Cambridge
University on the sleep patterns of more than 10,000 people. Those who got eight hours had a 46 per cent greater than average stroke risk.
Oversleeping (usually defined as more than nine hours a night) has previously been linked with health problems like diabetes and obesity – yet few consider eight hours to fall into that bracket. Sure enough, the National Sleep Foundation recently published new guidelines, produced with a team of medical scientists, to try and pin down exactly how much sleep we need. They defined the ideals, by age group, as follows: Newborns (0 - 3 months): 14-17 hours per day
10
Infants (4 - 11 months): 12-15 hours per day

Clearing up Psoriasis, Dermatitis and Eczema without prescription drugs! By Debbie Pickering
If you have ever suffered from Psoriasis, Dermatitis or Eczema you will know it is no laughing matter. It can be painful, itchy, irritating, sore and embarrassing! Prescription drugs such as hydrocortisone and other cortisone based treatments can have side effects that are as bad as the condition. So what if there was a natural remedy that could heal, soothe and is natural so doesn’t have the side effects? There is - it is called Aloe Vera. Obviously the more concentrated the better so a good quality Aloe Vera is most effective. Aloe Vera has lignins, which are carried deep into the dermis layer of the skin and has also been found to reduce scarring during the healing process. Aloe Vera is anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, anti-inflammatory and deeply moisturising.
12
John and Juliet Ross used Aloe Vera for their 9 year old
daughter and her eczema patches cleared up in 3 - 4 weeks. They say, “However it did get worse before it got better and it was important that we persevered...We understand it was a ‘healing crisis’ when the damaged cells are pushed up to the surface by the deeper layer of healing skin. We continue to use the creme to keep the condition at bay” Finbar Lehane suffered from chronic psoriasis for many years and “...came to the conclusion that the side effects of Cortisone far outweighed the benefits” Finbar was given Aloe Vera Gel to drink, (Which helps to heel the skin from the inside) an Aloe Vera creme, also containing

He says, “I began the treatment on the Thursday evening and, to my sheer and utter disbelief, by Friday morning the itch had completely disappeared.” Like the Ross’s Finbar saw the problem got worse during his second week of treatment but he understood that the healing had begun. He says, “I am now at the stage where I have been taking the gel for 6 weeks and my body is clearing up at a steady pace. I have no doubt that I have found the answer to my problem.”
and soreness. In future articles, I will show how Aloe Vera can help with bowel and gut problems such as IBS, Colitis and Crohn’s Disease. It can help the digestive system, the immune system and the musculoskeletal systems as well as being a useful source of vitamins and minerals. The two case studies here can be found in Aloe Vera: The Medicine Plant by Dr Peter Atherton 2006 Published by KPM Co (pages 51 - 54)

Like Eczema, Psoriasis and Dermatitis is actually a disorder of the immune system. These are very common and can be aggravated by stress, alcohol and digestive problems. There is a long chain sugar (polysaccharide) in Aloe Vera that can help to balance the immune system, which is why drinking Aloe Vera Gel can help to heal these conditions from the inside out. Using an Aloe soap helps and of course a rich moisturising creme with Aloe and Propolis will all help to heal from the outside, as well as bringing immediate relief from itching

Too Busy to Bathe!
14
The majority of women in the UK don’t bathe or take a shower each day because they are too tired, new research has revealed. The survey also showed that as many as one in three women admitted that they had gone as long as three days without washing or wiping their face or body at all. Some 57 per cent of women acknowledged the importance of hygiene, but said that they didn’t have the time to shower or bathe before bed, and instead opted to freshen up with wipes. The survey of over 2,000 females by skin care range Flint + Flint also showed that over 60 per cent of women did not remove their makeup before bed after a night out, with 35 per cent of those saying they were worried about getting enough sleep. Asked whether they washed in the morning, only a fifth of women said they took a shower or bath every day, with over 30 percent revealing they did not wash for three days at time. However, 92 per cent of participants said they understood the importance of a skin care regime and recognised that life-style factors such as lack of sleep and dehydration can impact the appearance of their skin. Almost 90 per cent of women surveyed said they didn’t improve their hygiene because they were too tired in the morning or evening. The NHS advises that to maintain a basic level of hygiene, a person must wash their face and brush their teeth daily;
clean their hands after using the toilet; wash their genital and anal area each day; and fully bath or shower at least twice a week. Flint + Flint owner Maxine Flint said the company was “alarmed” by the survey. “We were alarmed to hear about the amount of women not looking after their skin by following basic skin care regimes. It is so important to clean your face daily and moisturise to slow down the ageing process.” “It’s true that today’s pace of life is fast but surely as a nation we haven’t become too busy to wash!” To contact

GOOLE RESIDENTS URGED TO RECYCLE CARDBOARD CORRECTLY
16
Please do not put cardboard in your brown bin – that is the message being sent out to residents in the Goole area. The brown bins are for food and garden waste only. East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s waste and recycling team is reminding residents that all cardboard items should be disposed of in the blue recycling bins. Residents were originally allowed to put cardboard into their brown bins when recycling schemes began, but that changed for the Goole area in June 2014 with the introduction of the fortnightly bin collections. Mike Featherby, head of streetscene services at East Riding of Yorkshire Council, said: “We are still finding cardboard in waste collected from most residents’ brown bins in Goole, Howden and the surrounding villages, and that can cause problems for our waste contractors. “Goole was the last area in which the fortnightly collection system was rolled out, so some residents may not have got used to the changes, but we are extremely grateful people are continuing to recycle. We would just ask them for a little extra help by putting cardboard into their blue bins.”
Please mention
In January 2015, 217 tonnes of waste was collected in brown bins from Goole and the surrounding area, which went to be recycled into compost, saving the council more than £17,500 than if the waste had simply been placed in the green household bins. The council is urging residents to put their brown bins out for collection every fortnight even if, at this time of year, there may be very little in them, as every little counts. If residents are finding their blue bin is not big enough for all their cardboard or other waste, they can request a larger blue bin or an additional one by contacting the council’s waste and recycling team via the website www.eastriding.gov.uk Items to be recycled in blue bins include cardboard, paper, newspapers, magazines, books, envelopes, junk mail, glass, Tetra Pak cartons, plastic bottles, plastic tubs and trays, cardboard egg boxes, cans and aerosols. Brown bins should be used for garden and food waste, including grass cuttings, hedge trimmings, small branches, leaves, flowers and weeds, cooked and uncooked food, peelings, plate scrapings, bones, meat and egg shells. Food waste can be placed in the corn starch bags provided for the kitchen caddies, or wrapped in newspaper or kitchen roll before being put in the brown bins. Replacement corn starch bags can be picked up free at any of the council’s customer service centres, libraries and leisure centres. Residents can also sign up to the council’s text message reminder service to receive a free text the evening before each of the bin collections so they never miss ‘bin day’. Visit www.eastriding.gov.uk to sign up.

Herb Gardening
Sponsored by Heritage Landscape Centre
Those of you who think of herbs as just parsley, sage and thyme, think on. Herb expert Ian Ashbridge of Heritage Landscape Centre explains just how to grow and use them. Herbs are the quintessential plant: they look good, smell good and do you good. They have been used ever since humans have been on the earth, as medicines, perfumes, insect repellents and, of course, in food and flavouring. This huge group of plants includes trees, shrubs, annuals and even cacti, to name but a few.
18
The most important thing to remember when growing herbs is that they are the foundation of all modern medicine. They are not the gentle namby-pamby things some would like you to think. They are healers, therefore they should be treated with respect, and if you are considering them for specific medicinal use always consult a doctor or qualified herbalist. If you are growing herbs for use in the kitchen then you need to learn about their flavour and how they can aid digestion. Growing herbs Herbs, in most cases, are tough wild plants which, when spoilt by the lush conditions of a garden, will thrive and romp away. It’s a myth that all herbs like full sun, even good old basil likes partial shade at midday. So when planning your garden, you can divide your plants into two sections, those like thyme, sage, rosemary, french tarragon and oregano that like full sun; and those that like partial shade, such as rocket, sorrel, mizuna, mustard, parsley and chervil. Containers and window boxes If I had to choose some ‘must haves’ to put in a window box on the sunny side of the house I would include chives, oregano, lemon thyme and a creeping rosemary to drape over the edge. However, on the shady side of To contact

which can be drunk just like ordinary tea, and can provide a helpful supplement to the daily diet. To obtain the best flavour I always recommend using fresh herbs, but remember that they are less concentrated than dried When growing herbs in containers, I have two important herbs, as they still contain all their moisture. One of my tips. The first is to use a soil-based compost, either organic favourite teas is lemon verbena, which has a lovely flavour or something like John Innes potting compost. This is and aroma, and is refreshing served hot or cold either on because there are very few herbs that grow in peat, and a summer’s day, or last thing at night to help me a soil-based compost retains moisture which is a must get a good night’s sleep. to stop containers drying out. I also advise watering in the morning rather than the evening because this gives the plants a chance if the temperatures are hot during the day, especially for containers grown in full sun. The second tip is to feed container plants weekly from March until September. This keeps the plants healthy, helps them produce leaves, especially on cut and come again salads. I use a seaweed-based feed, however you can use any proprietary feeds that boost leaf production.
20
Remedies One of the easiest and best ways to extract the medicinal properties of the herbs is to make a tisane, or herb tea,

FIONA’S WORD
By Fiona Dwyer, broadcast journalist, PR & media consultant, slave to 2 children and a husband.
A SPRING CLEAN
38
My garage is a disaster. Does anyone use theirs anymore for their car? I’m one of those people that thinks things will come in handy one day. There’s nothing wrong with it. It’s in good condition, so off it goes into the realm of my garage. And that’s why I now need a skip! I’m not even sure I know what’s out there anymore! My husband now says to me when I tell (sorry ask) him to put something there to store “When was the last time you looked in the garage. It won’t fit!” Sometimes I wish I could be like one of my brothers who has a great scheme – if he hasn’t used something for 6 months he gets rid of it. I just know that if I did that, come 6 months and one week later I would be frantically searching for that very useful item, whatever it might be! Anyway, I can’t tell you how pleased I am that it’s time for spring cleaning because I also need to have a good clear out in the house – and for that, yes you’ve guessed it, I need the garage! So – skip first, clear out second.
HOMAGE TO IRON MEN
No I don’t mean those men who undertake long distance triathlons or the genius, billionaire, playboy, philanthropist Tony Stark (for all you Marvel fans) but those unsung heroes who relieve the pressure of a particularly hateful chore. I love my husband. That goes without saying! But what I really love about him is that he does all our ironing because I hate it! It’s not that I can’t iron, I just don’t like doing it – and he does it so much better than me! Or at least that’s what I tell him! He may go into the office at 6.30 every morning to catch up on work, or more likely to avoid the nightmare that is getting the children up, breakfasted and out for school, but at least they’re crease-free! And he’s not alone! There are lots of them out there – so I say “Thank you and well done to all those Mr Browns, Mr Robinsons and others! Your efforts in this thankless task have been noted!”
