The Beautiful South’s co-founder Dave Hemingway’s new band SUNBIRDS to play: DONCASTER – Leopard on Friday 17th June HULL – New Adelphi Club on Saturday 18th June YORK – Crescent on Friday 24th June To coincide with their Summer 2022 shows, Sunbirds have just released their 2nd single ‘GENE KELLY’. The song paints a picture of a rainy, wintery night in a working class town, but our hero doesn’t care, he’s just positively enjoying the scene.

The man who once told us he loved us from the bottom of his pencil case, founder Beautiful South member Dave Hemingway returns with his new band SUNBIRDS playing Doncaster, Hull and York this June. Having retired from the live scene at the back end of 2016, Dave has been keeping busy together with erstwhile South colleague, guitarist/songwriter Phil Barton, new discovery singer/violinist Laura Wilcockson and drummer Marc Parnell. ‘Cool To Be Kind’ was released in November 2020, on the independent label Nectar Records signalling the arrival of Sunbirds with new songs and a new sound. Although born and bred in England, the band’s sound predominantly features the instrumentation of traditional American roots music combined with the occasional outburst of guitar heavy melody more

It tells tales that cover contemporary themes as well as age-old matters of the heart and soul - all viewed through the bottom of a recently drained pint glass. “Now we’re Sunbirds we’re free to dig a little deeper into ourselves”, says Phil “having said that, there’s no exact science here, we’re just enjoying ourselves and expressing whatever we want”.

However, you can only sing about what you know. “Although a lot of the songs have an Americana feel” says Dave “they’re still about life in England. You’re going to feel a bit daft singing about pick-up trucks and low down honky-tonks when you live in Yorkshire.” Their debut album produced by cult producer Teo Miller, captures truthful, open-hearted, funny and sometimes painfully honest songs, turning the page to a new chapter for Dave Hemingway and The Beautiful South story. ‘Cool To Be Kind’ is the result of a few transitional years in Dave and

Recipe

Prawn & Chicken Stir-Fry With Black Bean Sauce & Coriander

This might not be an authentic Chinese recipe – but the flavours of the black bean sauce, Chinese 5-spice and plenty of chilli really work. It’s a dish often made with strips of pork tenderloin, but more popular is this chicken and prawn version. The cooking of the vegetables comes down to what you have in the fridge – just make sure they retain some of their crunch.

8 INGREDIENTS 1 x 1.3kg free-range chicken, boned and skinned, or 2 chicken breasts, 2 thighs & 2 drumsticks, boned & skinned 4 garlic cloves, chopped 10cm piece of root ginger, peeled & sliced or grated 2 tbsp of black bean sauce ½ tsp of Chinese 5-spice 60ml of shaoxing wine or dry sherry 30ml of soy sauce ½ tsp of salt 1 tsp of sugar 1 red pepper, sliced 100g of green beans, topped, tailed & cut in half 100g of mangetout 100g of button mushrooms, sliced 100g of raw peeled prawns 100g of bean sprouts

Please mention

1 tbsp of cornflour, mixed with a little water 30g of coriander, rough chopped 1 bunch of spring onions, trimmed & sliced diagonally 45ml of sunflower oil

3 Remove the chicken pieces with a slotted spoon and keep them warm.

TO SERVE Steamed jasmine rice Chilli oil or soy sauce

4 Add a little more oil if needed, then the red pepper, chillies, green beans, mangetout and mushrooms. Cook for a minute or so, then put the chicken back in the wok and add the prawns, bean sprouts and 100ml of water.

METHOD 1 Cut the chicken into finger-sized pieces. Heat 3 tablespoons of the oil in a wok over a high heat. Add the garlic and ginger and stir-fry until fragrant and golden.

5 Let the mixture bubble, add the cornflour paste and cook until the chicken is cooked through and the sauce has thickened to a silky, clear honey-like consistency that clings to the chicken.

2 Add the black bean sauce, Chinese 5-spice, shaoxing wine or sherry, soy sauce, salt, sugar and chicken, then fry until the chicken is browned but not fully cooked through.

6 Stir in the coriander and spring onions and remove from the heat. 7 Serve with steamed jasmine rice and chilli oil or soy sauce. Serves: 6

New books for May People Person by Candice Carty-Williams Dimple Pennington is 30, and her life isn’t really going anywhere. An aspiring lifestyle influencer with a terrible and wayward boyfriend, Dimple’s life has shrunk to the size of a phone screen. Despite a small but loyal following, she’s never felt more alone – until a dramatic event brings her half siblings Nikisha, Danny, Lizzie and Prynce crashing back into her life. When they’re forced to reconnect with the absent father they never really knew, things get even more complicated.

Booth by Karen Joy Fowler An epic novel about the infamous, ill-fated Booth family. Junius Brutus Booth is the patriarch, a celebrated Shakespearean actor who fled bigamy charges in England – both a talent and a man of terrifying instability. As his ten children grow up on a remote farmstead in 1830s rural Baltimore, America draws ever closer to the boiling point of secession and civil war. The six Booth siblings who survive to adulthood each have their own dreams they must fight to realise, but it is Johnny who makes the terrible decision that will change the course of history: the assassination of US president Abraham Lincoln. Blending history with family saga, Booth is a riveting epic that focuses on the things that bind – and break – a family and the impact of slavery on both the Booths and their slaves, the Halls. The Exhibitionist by Charlotte Mendelson The Hanrahan family are gathering for a momentous weekend. Famous artist and notorious egoist Ray Hanrahan is preparing for a new exhibition – the first in many decades – and he’s sure it will burnish his reputation for good. His three children will be there: beautiful Leah, always her father’s biggest champion; sensitive Patrick, who has finally decided to strike out on his own; and insecure Jess, the youngest, who has her own momentous decision to make. But what of Lucia, Ray’s steadfast and selfless wife? She is

Please mention

an artist too, but has always put her roles as wife and mother first. What will happen if she decides to change? For Lucia is hiding secrets of her own, and as the weekend unfolds and the exhibition approaches, she must finally make a choice. This Women’s Prize for Fiction nominee is a thrilling exploration of art, sacrifice, toxic family politics and personal freedom. The Fake Up by Justin Myers We’re excited about Justin’s latest book, which focuses on two exes and one big secret. Dylan and Flo are in love. The only trouble is, they broke up months ago and everyone was delighted for them. At first, it’s exciting sneaking around, hiding from disapproving friends, climbing through bedroom windows to avoid family, and concocting hilarious disguises. It’s like Romeo and Juliet – but with more sex and less poison. Soon, though it becomes harder to separate truth from lies, Dylan and Flo are in way over their heads, and the games have only just begun. One Day I Shall Astonish The World by Nina Stibbe Susan and Norma have been best friends for years, thrown together at first by force of circumstance (a job at The Pin Cushion, a haberdashery shop in 1990s Leicestershire) and then by force of character (neither being particularly inclined to make friends with anyone else). Now, 30 years later, faced with a husband seeking immortality and Norma out of reach on a wave of professional glory, Susan begins to wonder whether she has made the right choices about life, love, work and, most importantly, friendship. Nina Stibbe’s new novel is the story of the wonderful and sometimes surprising path of friendship: from its conspiratorial beginnings, along its irritating wrong turns, to its final gratifying destination.

Gardening

Jobs for May May has arrived and the days are getting warmer and longer. Summer is on its way and it’s time to tidy up spring plants, plant out summer flowers and get planning for autumn. There are plenty of flowers and vegetables to sow and grow in May... Greenhouse jobs in May l Water thirsty crops such as tomatoes, cucumbers and courgettes regularly as the weather starts to warm up l Tie the stems of indoor tomatoes, cucumbers and aubergines to canes as they grow

12

l Plant heat-treated freesia corms in pots for fragrant flowers this summer l Check plants regularly for pests, on shoot tips and the underside of leaves, and treat with biological controls l Put up shading to lower daytime temperatures and reduce scorching l Open doors and vents on warm days, but close them in the evening as nights can still be cold Vegetables in May l Earth up potatoes, covering the shoots with soil as they appear l Sow sweetcorn in deep pots, so the young plants are ready to transplant into the garden in June l Reduce snail populations by going on regular evening hunts, especially during damp weather

Please mention

l Start sowing dwarf and climbing French beans, as well as runner beans, directly outdoors in warm weather l Pick rhubarb stems as they develop, and water plants with liquid feed l Start hardening off tender young plants, such as tomatoes and courgettes, ready for planting out in mild areas l Sow batches of salad leaves and stir-fry crops every few weeks to provide continuous pickings l Hang pheromone traps in apple and plum trees from May to July, to control pests l Thin out seedlings from earlier sowings to ensure you get healthy, strong-growing plants l Open fruit cage doors or lift some of the netting to ensure pollinating insects can get access to the flowers l Remove all strawberry runners, so plants put their full energy into fruiting l Keep plenty of fleece handy to protect young seedlings or fruit blossom, if late frosts are forecast Flowers in May l Prune spring shrubs, such as forsythia and chaenomeles,

after flowering to keep them compact l Plant out dahlia tubers and cannas after all risk of frost has passed l Tie in the new shoots of climbing plants, including honeysuckle, clematis, and wisteria, to their supports l Continue sowing annuals, such as California poppies, into gaps in borders for colour from August into autumn l Plant up hanging baskets, but keep in a greenhouse or porch for a few weeks to establish, before putting outside l Plant out summer bedding and tender annuals, including sunflowers, cosmos and nasturtiums, after the last frost l Remove faded spring bedding, such as wallflowers and forget-me-nots, once faded and add to your compost bin l Harden off tender plants raised indoors, but bring them back in at night to protect from late frosts l Pinch out the shoot tips of bedding plants and young annuals to encourage bushier growth l Add interest to shady borders by planting a selection of hostas and ferns

Fiona’s Word Fiona Dwyer, broadcast OUR GARDEN KITCHEN so excited because my husband has almost journalist, PR & media I’m finished building our garden kitchen! It’s in a part of consultant, slave to 2 the garden we never really used before so it’s a great children and a husband. addition – and we’re looking forward to firing up the MY FAVOURITE MONTH

Do you have a favourite month? Mine is most definitely May – so yay! It’s May! For starters, it’s my birthday and my wedding anniversary. There are blossom trees flowering everywhere and forget-me-nots (my favourite flower) plus the weather is usually fairly warm (although I read a headline saying that we were about to have the coldest May on record!) I’m not going to let that bother me though because it’s May – and things are always a little brighter! It’s mid-Spring but it’s very nearly Summer. Things always seem more possible in May – and, to top it all, there are two bank holidays. Well, except this year because they’ve moved the 2nd one to June for the Queen’s Jubilee. So, I wish you all a very Happy May and hope you enjoy it as much as I plan to!

14

pizza oven and having loads of barbecues. I think we’ve all been using our gardens so much more since the start of the covid pandemic and it’s one of the changes I think will stick. And with the cost of living skyrocketing at the moment, eating al fresco in the garden on a summer’s evening doesn’t sound too bad at all!

TOO GOOD TO GO

Talking about the cost of living – have you heard of an app called ‘Too Good to Go’? It was created back in 2015 in Denmark as a way of eliminating food waste – and it’s been catching on around the world ever since. A lovely lady I met dog walking told me about it recently – and it sounded too good to be true – but she’s used it herself with great results. Basically, it connects you with extra or leftover food from local restaurants, coffee shops, supermarkets, bakeries etc who sell it to you at a reduced price to help fight food waste. Such a simple and fantastic idea. I knew shops did this but I didn’t realise there was an app that organised it all for you. When food is wasted, it also wastes the energy and water it took to grow and package it. Food also ends up in landfills producing methane, which is a greenhouse gas and more potent than carbon dioxide. So, while saving money, you have the added bonus of helping to protect our beautiful planet. I’m going to give it a go! Are you? Have a great May everyone!
