‘Boys Will be Boys’: Exhibition at Goole Museum
In 2019, Goole Museum produced the exhibition ‘From Street to Stadium’, which was researched by local football fan, Phil Collins. The exhibition was about the men from Goole who played professional football in the 1960’s It proved very popular, and Phil was regularly stopped in the street by people who wanted to share their own memories and the part football played in their past. It was obvious what Phil needed to do…and the result is the new exhibition, ‘Boys Will Be Boys’!
Goole Museum curator Dr Alex Ombler said: “The ‘boys’ we are remembering in this new exhibition are those who played
club and pub football in Goole during the 1960s and 1970s. In a time before smartphones and a million other distractions, many young men were happy to play football and be part of a team. It gave them something to do at the weekend. However, not all of the players remained in the local league; some went on to play for Goole Town, and a few progressed to professionals”
The exhibition also explores the story of women’s and girls’ football in a section called ‘Girls will be Girls’. It reveals to visitors that women’s and girls’ football is more popular than ever, and that the origin of the female game has its roots in the late Victorian period.
The exhibition launch is this Saturday (15 October) at the Museum from 10am. ‘Boys will be Boys’ will run until 23 December, 2022. Admission is free, and there is no need to book.
Goole Museum is located in Carlisle Street and is open: Tuesday to Friday 10am to 5pm Saturday 9am to 4pm Closed for lunch 12 noon to 12.30pm

Tips to boost your immunity ahead of the Covid and flu ‘twindemic’ that is expected to hit the UK
Brits are being urged to get their flu and Covid vaccinations as soon as possible over fears a winter “twindemic” poses a significant risk to the public.
UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) officials are concerned that the major wave of coronavirus that is already building will coincide with flu infections in the coming months.
While Covid restrictions kept influenza at extremely low levels in the past three years, the return to almost pre-pandemic levels of mixing in the UK means the virus is ripe to bounce back this season, when immunity in the population is low.
for vaccinations and screening, explained, “This winter could be the first time we see the effects of the so-called ‘twindemic’ with both Covid and flu in full circulation, so it is vital that those most susceptible to serious illness from these viruses come forward for vaccines in order to protect themselves and those around them.”
But, alongside the vaccines, what can you do to boost your immunity?
Here are a few things you can do to boost your immunity before the expected ‘twindemic’
For all those who are eligible, taking up both the Covid-19 booster and the flu jab is an essential form of protection against the most severe respiratory viruses in circulation this winter.
As well as a high-quality diet, your immune system can be strengthened by exercise and good-quality sleep.
Cutting back on alcohol and quitting smoking can also do wonders. And, this one almost goes without saying but regular handwashing is one of the best things you can do for your immune system, as it eliminates the chances of infection.
How does the immune system work?
Health experts are particularly concerned about the H3N2 flu strain, which caused influenza to return early to Australia. H3N2 can lead to more severe illness than other flu strains. It was the cause of the UK’s most recent severe flu season in 2017–18, which resulted in around 22,000 additional deaths and twice as many hospital admissions.
Steve Russell, the NHS director
The gut also plays a vital role in strengthening the immune system. If you provide your digestive system with an ideal habitat and plenty of nutrients, in turn, the gut helps train and shape the immune system.
Having a healthy diet, rich in plants and gut-friendly fermented foods, as well as probiotics, can help fight infection at a faster rate.
Of course, diet alone does not necessarily mean a person will have a strong immune system that can fight off covid and other illnesses.
Your immune system protects your body from pathogens, like dangerous bacteria and viruses, that pose a threat to your health. It can spring into action to defend you from pathogens, releasing antibodies to fight them.
Over time, antibodies fade, but the memory of the original pathogen endures.
Identical copies of these antibodies will be massproduced in the event of a future infection, meaning your body will be primed able to fight it off if it comes into contact with the same infection again.

SUPER SUCCULENTS
Seven simple steps to create your own sensational succulent bowl at home.
Bring the splendour of nature indoors with your own special succulent bowl. Known for their robustness, succulents can be a great choice for novice gardeners or those wanting a plant with minimal upkeep. Plus, in general, increasing the greenery in your home helps to purify the air inside, as well as helping to balance humidity –particularly helpful over the winter when you might be more likely to struggle with colds and sore throats..
So, whether you’re looking for a mindful activity to deliver ongoing wellbeing benefits, or simply a beautiful ‘green’ decoration for your home, here are seven easy steps to create your own succulent bowl...
1. Select your succulents
With a wide variety of shapes and sizes available, mix and match a range that appeals to you. You might want to try a ‘flaming Katy’ (pictured) for a spot of colour, or a ‘string of pearls’ for an added dimension, with its trailing leaves.
2. Prepare your pot
Choose a container that catches your eye –perhaps a terracotta bowl or a terrarium – and fill it with potting soil (ideally one with sand or perlite to assist with drainage). Since succulents originate in harsh, arid conditions, they will need a desertdweller mix to really help them thrive.
3. Release the roots
When taking your plants from their individual pots, tease the roots apart if they’re compacting too tightly. This ensures your freshly potted plant can start to spread its roots almost immediately, soaking up any moisture it needs.
4. Start your planting
Dig a hole towards the middle of the bowl to house your tallest succulent, and place it in, securing with the earth.
5. Plan some breathing space
As tempting as it is to pack your plants in, ensure you leave room for each to spread out as it grows. Succulents grow really quickly, so your little creation will look ‘finished’ in no time, but overcrowding can lead to mould or insect infestations, so it’s important to let them breathe.
6. Water immediately
This ensures you get rid of any air pockets around the roots, and gives them a much-needed drink after being repotted.
Going forwards, water your succulents when the soil feels dry to the touch – if it’s still damp, give it some more time to dry out.

Echeveria elegans
7. Seek out some sun Succulents are sunworshippers, so try to place your bowl somewhere that gets a decent amount of sunlight each day – ideally six to eight hours. Then, simply enjoy watching them grow!
TYPES TO TRY
Echeveria elegans – this is one of the classic succulents, with a pale, green-blue hue, which grows into rosette shapes.
Sedum morganianum – has notable trailing leaves, which can look particularly great in hanging pots, or to add some dimension by hanging over the edges of your bowl.
Senecia rowleyanus –known as the ‘string of pearls’, is a lowmaintenance option that also features trails of leaves, but in more bud-like shapes.
Graptopetalum superbum – with stunning, frosted purple foliage, this plant is particularly hardy, withstanding temperatures down to -3°C.
Kalanchoe blossfeldiana – also called ‘flaming Katy’, this succulent stands out for its flowers that grow in a variety of colours, contrasting with the dark green leaves.
Crassula – sometimes referred to as ‘Buddha’s Temple’, this succulent’s leaves, with their powdery coating, face upward to resemble a Chinese temple, and may grow pink flowers in summer months.

CHRISTMAS IS COMING!
The countdown is on and it’s time to get prepared. This year, with the cost of living constantly on the rise, it’s more important than ever to get organised in advance so there’s no huge pressure to spend all in one month. And remember, it’s not just about presents. It’s about spending quality time with your family and friends. At Christmas, we are celebrating the birth of Jesus who was born in a stable, no finery surrounding Him. But no matter your faith, we can all look at how we can help those less fortunate than ourselves, as everyone is so good at doing in our wonderful region. Age UK in Hull has its shoebox appeal for older people who may be isolated or lonely at Christmas – and there will be many more similar projects. They often need handing in by early December, so it’s worth keeping an eye out now to see if you can help.
HOW TO COPE WITH S.A.D.
Now that the clocks have gone back, the days are getting shorter and there’s more dark than light. It’s definitely the time of year when I want to get my pyjamas on as early as possible, settle down in front of the fire with my wearable blanket, watching All Creatures Great and Small or Strictly or catching up with my latest book. I can’t be on my own in this, surely?!! But it’s also a time of year when many people suffer Seasonable Affective Disorder, or S.A.D. In fact, did you know that it affects around two million people in the UK? Symptoms like fatigue, anxiety and feeling low. You may be isolating
yourself from family and friends, struggling with concentration and not sleeping properly. A lack of exposure to sunlight is thought to exacerbate it –that’s why it gets worse in autumn and winter - but there are ways to help. Experts suggest getting yourself as much sunlight as you can during the day (maybe a lunchtime walk) or consider a light therapy lamp. Check your Vitamin D levels and keep up a regular exercise regime. However, they say if you are experiencing symptoms for two weeks or more, you should get advice from your GP for advice and potential treatment. So, however you are feeling, know that you’re not on your own. Wishing you all good health during the winter months.
WOMEN OF ACHIEVEMENT
Having been cancelled due to the Covid pandemic in 2020, the fantastic Women of Achievements Awards is being held on 11th November at the Mercure Hotel in Willerby – and I am honoured to be compèring the event again this year. It’s always such an inspirational afternoon. As well as hearing the stories of women who are achieving so much in their lives and careers, I am really looking forward to meeting our guest speaker, one of Britain’s most recognisable TV and radio personalities, Gloria Hunniford OBE. She’s going to be talking to us about her incredible life and fabulous career. Good luck to all the finalists! It’s a sell-out event and it’s going to be absolutely fabulous!
