Trends
& Fashions
Amongst other factors, the current economic climate appears to have contributed to the trend of acquiring and reusing vintage clothing, accessories, and homeware products, particularly with young consumers. The popularity of vintage has also been linked to a change in consumer attitudes towards wearing and utilising secondhand goods. In addition to a change in attitudes, other factors that contribute to the growth of the vintage trend include a change in values, the inclusion of vintage inspirations used in current designs by fashion designers, and in the trends marketed by the forecasting sector, eco-sustainability, the media, and technology. Also vintage consumers and vintage retailers appear to share the viewpoint of the movement towards vintage fashion that has been assisted by a reaction against mass-produced fast fashion, as consumers strive for more individuality in their styling and garments. Eco-fashion and sustainable fashion ideals have emerged as solutions to the environmental issues that are currently inherent in the industry’s manufacturing processes, which have government and pressure group support. This ideal and practice complements the vintage trend phenomenon.
As Beverley Minster once again prepares to open its doors to its very popular and successful fund raising event - the Vintage & Retro Fair we ask the question why is vintage so popular.. Vintage is everywhere. When you think about it; that’s rather a silly statement. Of course, vintage is everywhere – as soon as something’s been around for a while it effectively becomes ‘vintage’, being replaced by something newer that’s the latest flavour of the month. By definition then, vintage is everywhere – so let’s embrace it!
The celebrity factor Like or not, in the past few years, the renaissance of vintage may in part be attributable to the fact so many celebrities have been photographed and appear in newspapers and magazines and on the Internet happily wearing vintage in public. This, in many people’s minds then, has helped underline the reality there’s no barrier at all to wearing vintage and looking entirely with-it and modern – and with that, using vintage clothes to help carve out and express one’s own style and individual dress sense.

Self-expression Maybe most of all, though, vintage/ retro is enjoying an undeniable time in the sun right now because it’s an enabler - it ensures its enthusiasts can be enthusiasts of themselves; that is, of their own sense of style and fashion and how they wish to be seen - how they want to present themselves to the outside world and what about their own personalities they want to share through how they dress. It can be - flying in the face of homogenous high-street garments - about self-expression. And, through that, about liberation and freedesign,thanratheraccidentoutseekingthroughretrovintage/ininterestandeveloptoturnpeopleManystyling.andor,bydiscovering that one piece that they have to have, which becomes that favourite in their wardrobe they constantly pull out and mix and match with so many other things. That, of course, is wonderful, but it can lead them further into the wide world of vintage fairs, shops and online sellers; it can become a door that opens them up to all the possibilities out there.

The Bastard Factory, which tells a story of betrayal and self-delusion spanning the years 1905 to 1975, taking readers from Riga to Moscow, Berlin to Munich, and all the way to Tel Aviv. Hubert and Konstantin Solm are brothers, born in Riga at the beginning of the 20th century. As the two brothers climb the rungs of society – working first for the government in Nazi Germany, then as agents for the Allied Forces, and eventually becoming spies for the young West Germany – their adopted sister Ev will be their constant companion, and eventually a lover to them both. The passionate love triangle that emerges will propel the characters to terrifying moral and political depths.
The Marriage Portrait by Maggie O’Farrell
Set in 1500s Florence. Lucrezia is free to wander her palazzo at will, wondering at its treasures. But when her older sister dies on the eve of marriage to Alfonso d’Este, heir to the Duke of Ferrara, Modena and Reggio, Lucrezia is thrust into the limelight. Alfonso is quick to request her hand in marriage, and her father to accept on her behalf. Having barely left girlhood, Lucrezia must now make her way in a troubled court where her arrival is not universally welcomed. Perhaps most mystifying of all is her husband himself. Is he the playful sophisticate he appears or the ruthless politician even his formidable sisters seem to fear? As Lucrezia sits in uncomfortable finery for the painting to preserve her image for centuries to come, one thing becomes worryingly clear. In the court’s eyes, she has one duty: to provide the heir who will shore up the future of the Ferrarese dynasty. Until then, for all her rank and nobility, her future hangs entirely in the balance.
by Dame Deborah James At the age of 35, Deborah James was blindsided by incurable bowel cancer – and was given a less than 8% chance of surviving five years. More than five years later – and just months after her untimely death – her book How to Live When You Could Be Dead shows readers how to build a positive mindset and, through this, think about what they could do if they believed they could do anything they want. To honour her memory, Ebury will donate £3 from the sale of each copy sold in the UK to the Bowelbabe Fund for Cancer Research UK.
How To Live When You Could Be Dead
New books for September Amy and Lan, and the pair would never tell them about climbing on the high barn roof, or what happened with the axe that time, any more than their parents would tell them the things they get up to – adult things, like betrayal – that threaten to bring the whole fragile idyll tumbling down.
Trio by Johanna Hedman Thora, August and Hugo come from different worlds: one an art school dreamer, one a wealthy scion of the old elite, and one an ordinary boy from out of town. But over the course of two summers in Stockholm, they are drawn together. The novel starts years later, when Hugo, long estranged from Thora and August, is visited by their daughter – who has questions about her parents she believes only Hugo can answer – and the memories of those luminous days come flooding back. Modern but timeless, The Trio is a novel about the path not taken, the people we might have become, and the relationships that shape and haunt us long after they end.
The Bastard Factory by Chris Kraus
Amy & Lan by Sadie Jones Amy Connell and Lan Honey are having the best childhood, growing up on a West Country farm – three families, a couple of lodgers and plenty of animals to befriend. Their parents are best friends too. Originally from the city, they’re learning about farming: growing their own vegetables, milking the goats, slaughtering chickens and scything the hay. The adults are far too busy to keep an eye on

It is imperative to maintain proper posture while using a lawn mower as poor technique can lead to increase strain, and in turn, low back pain. Also pay attention to your arm position. Proper form allows a slight bend at the elbow with the handle at a comfortable level (not too high and not too low).
5. Make sure to have long enough handles on your tools to avoid excessive bending.
3. Make sure you are well hydrated while spending hours outside. It is a good idea to wear light coloured clothing and a hat, and plant in shaded
Tips to Avoid Back Pain Whilst Gardening
LAWN MOWING
Gardening presents a relaxing hobby for many, although it is important to follow specific techniques to avoid back strain and low back pain while gardening. Here are a few strategies to help you maintain a healthy back while enjoying time spent in your gardens, potting sheds and greenhouses:

LIFTING heavyliftingProlongedofbags of soil and mulch can take a toll on your back. One rule of thumb is to always use your hips to lift up, as these muscles are typically much stronger than your low back
WEEDING Weeding often requires prolonged sitting or bending over. To avoid excessive bending, it is recommended that you use a stool (a simple low stool will often do the trick) to sit on, which will reduce the amount of pressure put on your low back. This is also a useful technique if one has knee and/or hip pain.

5 GARDENING BASICS FOR EVERY GREEN THUMB:
DIGGING Digging is a critical gardening movement that requires the right tools to get the job done safely and efficiently. Make sure you have a shovel with sharp edges to reduce the amount of force needed to scoop the dirt. The handle of the shovel should also be long enough to avoid excessive bending. Maintain good posture while using a shovel, and if you find yourself using too much pressure, try to wet the soil to loosen it up. Don’t twist too much when dumping out the soil, but rather move a few steps to get to the dumping ground.
Furthermore, muscles. bend at the knees and use the hips to come back up; do not bend your waist. Many people invest in elevated garden beds to avoid excessive bending. If something is too heavy, don’t be afraid to ask for help! Your back will thank you later.

Have a super September everyone!
HOUSE OF THE DRAGON
Fiona’s
TIME TO REFOCUS With the school term starting, September’s always a great time to shake off the summer holiday sluggishness and refocus on reaching our end of year goals. What do you want to do that you haven’t found time for yet? It could be to do with your work or business – or equally it might be a health and fitness goal or a decluttering the house goal. Whatever it is, don’t forget to break it down into small, manageable chunks so it’s not too overwhelming. I love September for this. There are certain times of year that feel right for recharging and getting yourself back into gear. This is one of them. So, good luck! I’d love to hear what you’re going to do.

I can’t believe it’s already September and the children are going back to school. Time to get back to termtime routine. This year, we have one child doing A Levels and the other doing GCSEs. A double whammy! So, I’m looking at how best to support them so they focus on their studies, but at the same time look after their mental health and help them not get too stressed by everything. I’m not quite sure how to do that, but I’ll give it my best! Advice always welcome! So far, I’ve had, ”Yes, well, good luck with that!” Really helpful! Anyway, for all those facing exams this academic year, I wish you and your parents the best of luck.

If you, like me, were a Game of Thrones fan, then you will no doubt be filled with a mixture of excitement and trepidation for the new House of the Dragon series. Excitement - because who didn’t love Games of Thrones? Trepidation – well, there was a lot of backlash about the final season and how it ended! What did you think? Regardless, critics say it’s going to be ‘bigger, bolder and bloodier’ than Game of Thrones. It’s set 300 years before the Westeros we’ve seen before, diving into the history of House Targaryen, their family feuds and the gruesome battle for power between the heirs to the throne. And, we’ll see loads more dragons! It’s pure escapism – and I can’t wait.
