The Daniel Wilkinson Foundation On Monday 12th September 2016, 24 year old Daniel Wilkinson was doing what he loved, playing football, the former Hull City player was playing for Shaw Lane AFC in a cup tie at Brighouse Town FC when he suddenly collapsed on the field, despite heroic efforts by medical staff from both teams along with paramedics, we were unable to save him. Daniel died from an underlying heart condition called Arrhythmogenic Right Ventricular Cardiomyopathy (AVRC), the same disease that caused former footballer Fabrice Muamba to retire in 2012.
4
ARVC is an inherited condition that causes the replacement of cardiac muscle with fibrous, fatty tissue, normally in the right side of the heart. This causes the walls in the heart chamber to become thin and stretched, impacting how the blood is pumped around the body and causing abnormal heart rhythms (or dangerous cardiac arrhythmias). The condition can be found in one in every 2,000-5,000 adults - if it is looked for. It mainly affects young adults and has been the reason for some sudden unexplained deaths in young athletes. The Daniel Wilkinson Foundation has been set up to raise funds that will ultimately safe lives. By donating to this foundation and with the support of the FA and county FA's, every penny raised will go towards providing Screenings for all footballers at grass roots levels and to assist clubs in purchasing Defibrillators and to provide training in CPR. We must ensure that Daniel's death is not in vain and that no more young footballers lose their lives.
A JustGiving page has been set up, which is aiming to raise £50,000, donations can be made here https://www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/danwilkinsonfoundation.
Don't get left out in the cold this winter Whatever your sport or group, there are indoor facilities available across our sports and leisure centres. Maybe it's a friendly game of badminton with the family, a 5-a-side football with work colleagues, or a regular block booking for a club. Costing from as little as £8.90 per badminton court, with discounts available for weekly block bookings, the dark nights and wilder weather is no reason not to keep fit and have fun. Volunteers Wanted for Community First Responder Schemes Andrew is asking for volunteers to join two local community first responder (CFR) schemes, in Goole and Howden. Andrew says, “We’re looking for volunteers for both the Goole and Howden community first responder schemes. We have a number of CFR schemes in our area, both in the East Yorkshire and North Lincolnshire parts of the constituency, and I launched the Goole, Hook & Airmyn scheme back in 2013.
Community first responders are volunteers trained in basic life support skills including CPR, defibrillation and oxygen therapy. They are equipped with an automated external defibrillator, oxygen and a first aid kit. As authorised volunteers with the Ambulance Service, CFRs can be dispatched at the same time as an ambulance to a number of 999 calls. As volunteers, they are based in their community and often arrive first on scene; providing vital assistance until the emergency services arrive. As a volunteer community first responder, you can make a huge difference in your local area by helping to save lives”. If you are interested in this scheme, or would like more information, then you can go online: http://www.communityresponders.yas.nhs.uk/ or you can contact Andrew on 01405 767969

GLENN TILBROOK
plays LEEDS – Brudenell on Tuesday 6th December!
Don’t be fooled by the title of Glenn Tilbrook’s most recent solo album, Happy Ending, or at least not all of it. He’s happy, of course, and why wouldn’t he be? He’s more than earned his place at pop’s top table as one of our most cherished singers, guitarists and songwriters, not to mention an indemand and endlessly endearing live performer. But more than 40 years after he first answered an ad placed by Chris Difford looking for like-minded sorts to form the band that became the much-loved evergreen Squeeze, an ending is nowhere in sight. Such is the continuing work ethic of a fellow who’s never been far from the action since Squeeze made their recording bow with the Packet Of Three EP in 1977. Those humble three tracks led to such enduring pop classics as Take Me I’m Yours, Cool For Cats, Up The Junction, Another Nail In My Heart, Tempted, Labelled With Love, (this could go on for a while...), not to mention landmark albums like Argybargy, East Side Story and Some Fantastic Place. Squeeze’s demise in 1998 (though not permanent) saw Glenn embark on a solo career that spawned the albums The Incomplete Glenn Tilbrook (2001) and Transatlantic Ping-Pong (2004), showcasing an evermaturing songwriting talent. Arguably, though, Happy Ending is Glenn’s most personal work to date, a series of evocative portraits of time, people and places, that included writing and vocal contributions by his own children Leon and Wesley, in addition to old friends Simon Hanson (Fluffers/reunited Squeeze drummer) and Dennis Greaves (Nine Below Zero, also Glenn’s compatriot in the side project band The Co-operative).

Residents offered chance to make savings on home energy bills in the East Riding Householders who signed up for the latest round of the East Riding of Yorkshire Council YORSwitch scheme will be able to save an average of £250 a year on their home energy bills. YORSwitch is part of iChoosr, a national collective switching scheme which invites energy providers to take part in auctions in which they put forward tariffs, with the lowest submissions being offered to people who register for the scheme.
Local News asset management, housing and environment at East Riding of Yorkshire Council, said: “I would encourage anyone who hasn’t already taken part in YORSwitch to do so, it is so simple and could save you lots of money. “There is no commitment to switch but, for the vast majority of those who do, there have been substantial savings. It’s extra money in the pockets of our residents, to spend with local businesses and support the East Riding economy.” How the money-saving YORSwitch scheme works: * Register for free to express your interest at www.eastriding.gov.uk/yorswitch * Offers are being sent out from 21 October, based on the usage information you submit * You are under no obligation unless you decide to switch * If you decide to accept the offer, you have until midnight on 29 November 2016 to go ahead with the switch
People who registered for the latest auction will now be able to take advantage of exclusive, fixed-rate tariffs from SSE - with average savings of £250 per year. Pre-payment customers are also able to access a market-leading tariff from Robin Hood Energy. In the East Riding, more than 15,000 households have registered for the YORSwitch scheme this year. East Riding of Yorkshire Council regularly attracts high numbers of participants, with more than 60,000 registrations since it started in 2013 and total savings for residents of more than £3.5million. Offer letters or e-mails informing residents of how much they could be saving against their current deal are currently being sent out. There is no obligation to accept the personal offer but if residents choose to do so it is an easy and straightforward process managed by the new provider. Gardening
November Gardener It’s November and the leaves are falling – what can we expect from the weather! There is always a chance of frost now which could very well bring an end to your summer displays in some parts of East Yorkshire. Now is a good time to insulate greenhouses with material such as Bubble Film which will save on those fuel costs.

Sponsored by Heritage Landscape Centre is important so it is best to close vents by mid-afternoon. As temperatures drop houseplants should be watered less frequently. It’s also advisable that plants being over-wintered under-glass are checked regularly to make sure they are keeping healthy and free from disease, which can be done by removing any dead flowers along with leaves that may become discoloured. Clean and disinfect pots and trays ready for next season. Plan your garden for next year, order plants and seeds early to avoid disappointment.
General If you didn’t manage to give the outside of the greenhouse a wash down last year, it would prove very worthwhile to try and do it on a warm day during this month removing any algae and grime that has built up preventing light getting to the plants inside. The use of a hosepipe, using a slow spray, and brush washer on each glazed panel would prove ideal for this job.
As temperatures start to fall birds will appreciate regular feeding too. Lawns If weather conditions are still mild and the grass is still growing give it a light trim; also continue to remove any fallen leaves that have blown onto the lawn.
It’s also a good idea to insulate greenhouses by using bubble air insulation film. Retaining warmth in the greenhouse

Sponsored by Heritage Landscape Centre plants is an electric garden blower and vacuum but that’s the easy way. Why not considerding killing two birds with one stone and gathering all the fallen leaves in your garden to create your own leaf mould which is the equivelant of gardening gold-dust. A hollow-tined aerator can be used for spiking lawns and grit can be brushed into the holes for improved drainage. Keep off the lawn if soil conditions are wet or frosty. Bulbs Planting spring bulbs should be completed as early in the month as possible, ensuring they are planted at the correct depth. Should their final planting space not be quite prepared, then why not plant the bulbs in large pots and then they can be planted out at a later date. Bulbs such as crocus, tulip and narcissi should all be planted into bowls by now for placing in a cool situation, given cover protection from any heavy rain so that development can begin.

Christmas Countdown
Well, can you believe it? We’re on the final countdown to Christmas. I know I’m getting older when I wonder where the last year has gone! It feels like I’ve blinked and it’s almost the festive season again! I must say though that I ‘m feeling rather proud of myself because I’ve already started my Christmas shopping! I’m certainly not someone who has everything bought and wrapped by the end of October – that’s just being far too organised 5 30 (although sometimes I’m a bit jealous!) I’m normally the ‘last couple of weeks’ sort of person and while I may have great plans for being much more organised, the weeks usually fly by and I’m in a panic! Not this year though! My plans are coming together and my aim is for a relaxing run up to Christmas. Fingers crossed! I’ll let you know how it works out!!

I’m guessing that most of you have a microwave in your kitchen. They are so convenient, great for warming things up and great for quick microwave meals when you’re short of time. Well, so did we until last year when it broke! We didn’t instantly buy another one as we would have done in the past, mainly because we didn’t get around to it. And we just didn’t miss it! What we discovered though was that it was just as quick and easy to warm up milk for hot chocolate in a pan on the hob, reheat leftovers in the oven and do pasta and rice in a pan of boiling water. That’s pretty much all we used it for anyway and I decided I was just being lazy using one. The only thing I still forget to do sometimes is to take something out of the freezer the night before to defrost it, but if I do I just make a different meal. In the end, we decided not to bother getting a new one. We didn’t need it – and, by all accounts, it’s a healthier option because we’re not nuking the goodness out of our food. It also means we have an extra space on our wall where I now have a bookshelf for my baking books! Win, win!
