In this months magazine we have a special Health & Wellbeing article on ‘Breakfast’. Is it the most important meal of the day, should we eat it? I am afraid I m not a very good role model for eating breakfast as mine usually consists of a cup of tea and a piece of fruit! This month we are also supporting our local advertisers with our special ‘Spotlight on Goole’ feature. Wherever possible I strongly believe in supporting local business and buying locally, I hope you do too. If you are feeling lucky this month, why not enter our competition to win tickets to see Busted – yes, the original line up have reformed after a twelve year break and we have a pair of tickets to see them at Sheffield Arena for one lucky reader.
Please note that whilst we take care to be accurate, no liability will be accepted under any circumstances should any of the content of this magazine be incorrect. Don’t forget to check out the Pet feature, after all, April is National Pet Month! Have we got any budding poets in DNfourteen? If so, we are looking to run a poetry page, so if you have something you would like to send us, please email it to us and you never know, you might find your poem in print. Enjoy the magazine,

Scheme Agreed For Goole Subways Andrew has welcomed confirmation from Network Rail that they will be investing £40,000 into the subway drainage system in Goole and that they have developed a two-phase plan to address flooding concerns.
The overall aim is to get a modern, fully accessible, system with a pump in both subways and I’ve pushed Network Rail on the timings for these works. They have explained that the first phase of works will significantly improve the system and are expected to happen this calendar year. Whilst it has taken a long time to get to this point, we now have a clear plan as well as much better communication between everyone involved which is very positive.”
Andrew Percy MP
The first phase of the works, which are an interim measure, 83 Pasture Road, Goole, East Riding of Yorkshire, DN14 6BP includes a new replacement pump with remote monitoring Tel: 01405 767 969 • Email: brigg.goole@gmail.com from Network Rail’s York control centre; plus a spare pump on Website: www.andrewpercy.org/ standby nearby. It also includes resilience measures including; refurbishing the chambers, undertaking weekly checks and Is Your PAYROLL a BURDEN? carrying out heavy duty clearance programmes every six months. Network Rail’s project team are currently finalising this first phase, with works hoped to be started in this calendar year.

6 Network Rail’s long-term ambition for the subways is to abandon the current Victorian system and replace it with a whole new modern system, with two separate pumps in each subway. This second phase scheme is designed and ready to go but will not be in the funding period until 2019/20. Even if the first-phase is successful, preventing any further flooding of the subways, the decision has been taken to still replace the entire system post-2019 as servicing the current system requires a road closure. However, if the interim measures don’t work, there is a chance that the longer term works could be brought forward to address this. Andrew, who has led a campaign for improvements in the subways, reports, “I’m pleased that we now have a scheme in place to tackle this issue. When these subways flood it is not only an inconvenience, but it is also dangerous for users. I’ve made it clear to Network Rail that the current situation is unacceptable and I welcome Network Rail accepting that Goole is a unique problem which needs sorting! We have seen other works in the past few years following our pressure, but this has not been sufficient or has been of limited success due to other factors.

Spotlight on Goole

This month we focus on everything Goole and the shops and businesses in this thriving town. Goole boasts a traditional town centre that is made up of many small independent businesses and some of the national high-street names & brands that offer the consumer a wide and varied choice of products, goods and services. This is a healthy mix that is often lost in some of the regions other large towns. You are always guaranteed friendly service with a smile (and a chat if you have time to stop) whilst shopping in Goole. I would encourage the locals of Goole to keep up your support for the businesses in Goole by visiting and purchasing from them. The best way to beat the recession and boost the local economy is to “Go Local”. I would also encourage the people of the surrounding villages to use the town as not only a shopping destination but for recreational purposes too, we have some fantastic pubs, restaurants and businesses that can cater for your every need, be it hairstyling, a massage, beauty treatments, a movie or a swim at the leisure centre.Goole is a town, civil parish and port (the

largest inland port in the UK) located approximately 45 miles inland on the confluence of the rivers Don and Ouse in the East Riding of Yorkshire, England. According to the 2011 UK census, Goole parish had a population of 19,518, an increase on the 2001 UK census figure of 17,600. The port is “highly versatile”, and is capable of handling nearly 3 million tonnes of cargo per annum, making it one of the most important ports on the east coast of England.Goole is twinned with Złotów, Poland, (it was twinned with Rostock, East Germany in 1969 although this seems to have lapsed). Goole was informally twinned with Gibraltar in the 1960s; at that time, Gibraltar Court was named in Goole and Goole Court was named in Gibraltar. Please support our DN14 advertisers as they all represent local businesses that are here to provide you with quality goods and services at competitive prices. Spotlight on Goole
A Short History of Goole The word Goole is an Anglo-Saxon word meaning ‘open sewer’, or ‘outlet to a river’. Goole did not exist until the early 1800’s. Until then there were small farming villages nearby at Hook, Airmyn, Howden and a few houses where Old Goole is now situated. The history of Goole begins when a Dutch Engineer Vermuyden diverted the river Don by 10 miles to make it flow into the River Ouse rather than the River Aire. This was done at the request of the King who liked to go hunting on Hatfield Chase near Doncaster and was fed up with the land always flooding. This allowed the land around Goole to become more habitable.
10
In 1826, the Aire & Calder navigation company built a canal from Leeds to Goole. This was the start of Goole as we know it and a large town built up exporting coal from the West Riding of Yorkshire to the Continent. Various shipping lines set up in the town, each one having their own fleet of ships, ensigns and offices in the town. The
railway came a few decades later with the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway using the port as its outlet to the North Sea and boom time came. Other Goole engineers invented radical ways to improve the efficiency of the docks. The most famous of these were the coal hoists. These allowed small barges (Tom Puddings) carrying coal from the Yorkshire coalfields to be lifted from the water and their contents loaded directly into waiting ships. At its peak Goole was a rival to Hull. There were passenger ferry services to Europe and the world and local steam packet services to Hull and York. For a town of 10,000 people there were three cinemas, two theatres and a ridiculous number of pubs serving both the locals and visiting sailors. Various municipal parks were built and the town expanded to the surrounding countryside. Rail links were built to Selby, Hull and Doncaster. Shipyards were built across the river in Old Goole and at Hook. Goole landmarks such as the ‘Salt and Pepperpot’ water towers, the cranes, windmills, the Grammar School and chimneys were built. Despite its prosperity, Goole was still quite

Spotlight on Goole isolated and surrounded by beautiful flat countryside. It became known as ‘the Port in Green Fields’. This was the ‘Heyday of the Railways’ in Goole. In the early days, Goole did not want a railway as this would have meant competition to the canal. However, to stop railway traffic going to Hull, the Company Directors decided not to oppose a railway to Goole, but to plan it so it helped the town. Railway freight always played an important part of the development of Goole. As well as the coal traffic, general goods were loaded onto ships and the L&YR took over the Goole Steam Shipping Company in 1905 to aid this growth. Up to 20 years ago most goods were loose and handled in the open air by a large number of men. Today everything is stored in containers or on pallets The original L&YR station was built alongside Railway Dock and had two 100ft platforms adjacent to St John’s Street. In 1881-82, the docks were expanded and the L&YR station closed down with all passenger trains using the NER station in Boothferry Road. They also built a large Goods Office across from Stanhope Dock. When the Selby to Goole Line opened, a spur was built between Rawcliffe
Bridge Junction and Oakhill Junction for all passenger traffic. The line between Rawcliffe Bridge Junction and West Junction was always very busy with freight traffic to the docks. The branch lines led to a high-level coal drop and other parts of the docks. The town was bombed during the Zeppelin raids of World War I, (a mass grave for the victims when a theatre was hit still exists in the cemetery), but was only bombed once in Second World war by a lost plane trying to find Leeds. Goole’s merchant sailors played a great role in keeping supply lines to Scandinavia open (Norway still provide the town’s Christmas tree every year), and sections of the Mulberry Harbour used in the D-Day landings were constructed in Goole and floated down to France.

To Breakfast or Not? Breakfast is the most important meal of the day: it’s a dietary truth few would disagree with. The NHS Choices website insists that you eat it. “Not hungry first thing in the morning? Pushed for time? Trying to lose weight?” It suggests “apple-pie porridge” or granola to “rediscover the pleasure of breakfast”. Missing breakfast, warn experts, is a recipe for raiding the office vending machine later and piling on the pounds. So there must be a stack of research to support these assertions, right? The solution When Dr James A Betts, lead researcher for the Bath Breakfast Project, is asked by people how important breakfast is, he says that the jury is still out. His team’s latest research – a randomised controlled trial published this month in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition – shows that neither obese people who eat breakfast, nor those who miss it, lose weight.
14
These are similar findings to the team’s earlier study of lean people, who were found to have consumed in excess of 500

calories more a day on average if they ate breakfast. Betts says that people don’t catch up on the calories they skipped at breakfast, but instead compensate by preserving energy – they fidget less at their desk or take the lift over the stairs, which, over the days, mounts up as burning fewer calories. The already mythological link between missing breakfast and overeating later is further contradicted by another randomised controlled trial of 283 people that found no difference in weight gain between those who ate breakfast and those who didn’t.

Health & Wellbeing The breakfast issue is part of the ongoing debate around fasting. Betts says evidence is emerging that the idea of grazing little and often is not that healthy: fasting can make people more sensitive to insulin (and so protect them from diabetes) and increase the levels of good fats in their blood (reducing the risk of heart disease). It also restricts calories and can (despite inducing lethargy) promote weight loss. Betts says a combination of a food industry pushing breakfast goods and the media misreporting science have combined to create a mythology around the morning meal. If easing your hunger when you wake up is important to you, then eat breakfast. If you are not hungry – and especially if you are overweight – then don’t eat out of some misguided notion that breakfast is essential. As a rule of thumb, don’t eat unless you are hungry.
16
If you are doing something where you need to perform well, or you’re an athlete, then breakfast will be useful. Children may also benefit – they may not be hungry when they wake up, but often don’t have the free choice to self-regulate what they eat during the day.
A healthy lifestyle will make your heart healthier. Here are three things you can do to look after your heart. Give up smoking If you’re a smoker, quit. It’s the single best thing you can do for your heart health. Smoking is one of the main causes of coronary heart disease. A year after giving up, your risk of a heart attack falls to about half that of a smoker. You’re more likely to stop smoking for good if you use NHS stop smoking services. Visit the Smokefree website or ask your GP for help with quitting. Get active Getting – and staying – active can reduce your risk of developing heart disease. It can also be a great mood booster and stress buster. Do 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity every week. One way to achieve this target is by doing 30 minutes of activity on five days a week. Fit it in where you can, such as by cycling to work. Manage your weight Being overweight can increase your risk of heart disease. Stick to a healthy, balanced diet low in fat and sugar, with plenty of fruit and vegetables, combined with regular physical activity.

Are you the best licensed premises in the East Riding The search is on to find the top pub, entertainment premise or bar in the East Riding to compete against the best in the UK. The 2016 Best Bar None awards, which are now in their fourth year, were formally launched on Tuesday, 15 March at The Spa Bridlington and was attended by licensees from among the 850 pubs and licensed premises across the East Riding. Best Bar None is a national scheme which is held every other year and aims to promote responsible management and operation of alcohol-licensed premises. The scheme is backed by the Home Office and aims to reward licensees who: • help reduce alcohol-related crime and disorder • build a positive relationship between licensed trade, the police and the local authority • provide a safe and enjoyable environment for customers • help reduce the harmful effects of binge drinking • improve their knowledge and skills to improve their business and the local area. There will be seven award categories: • best bar (town) • best pub (town) • best pub/bar (rural) • best restaurant/food-led venue • best entertainment/

leisure venue • best independent venue • best late night venue (after midnight). There will also be two special recognition awards for best new entrant and best public health initiative. Premises that choose to enter the awards will be assessed by trained assessors and those that meet all the essential criteria will be awarded accreditation status. The top five premises in each category will then be put forward to an independent judging panel that will score the best in category and the overall winner of the Best Bar None scheme, the winner of which will be announced at an awards ceremony in November. Councillor Shaun Horton, portfolio holder for community involvement and local partnerships at East Riding of Yorkshire Council, said: “The bar and leisure industry is an important part of the evening economy of the East Riding. “The Best Bar None scheme recognises those who run licensed premises to the highest standards of safety and promote the licensing objectives. “We are looking for premises that have high standards in place, takes pride in their service as well as making a positive contribution to the local community.” For more information about the scheme or to apply go to www.eastriding.gov.uk or email licensing@eastriding.gov.uk

Beware of late frosts and keep vulnerable plants and new shoots protected at night if frost is forecast. Don’t be tempted to put out tender bedding until much later on in the month, and even then be prepared to cover it if necessary. Deadhead daffodils and narcissi; give them a liquid feed or a sprinkling of bonemeal and then let them die down. Don’t cut off the leaves as they are necessary to replenish the bulb for next year. Keep deadheading spring bedding to keep it looking neat, and to encourage new flowers. Continue with the spring cleaning. Hoe your borders, getting rid of weeds before they take hold - annual weeds such as bitter cress and groundsel are enough of a nightmare without allowing them to go forth and multiply by seeding. If it’s dry, attack ground elder and the like with systemic weed killer painted onto the leaves. Mulch away while you can still see what you are doing and before the herbaceous growth really takes off. Use your own garden compost or leaf mould, well rotted manure, the contents of out-of-date grow bags or readymade soil conditioner. Now the soil is warming up and things are starting to grow, add general purpose fertiliser before covering with mulch especially in borders, the fruit and vegetable patch and containers. If you have already mulched, draw it back (if possible), tease the soil a little, add fertiliser and replace the mulch. Carry on removing moss and weeds from paths, terraces and drives. Make new beds and borders - mark the shape with sand trickled from a bottle, remove the top layer of growing vegetation and dig the ground over, incorporating as much organic matter as possible. If you are making a bed in the lawn, remove the turf – if you dig it in the buried grass will regrow. Clean and repair your garden tools, book the lawn mower in for a service and check garden furniture for any rot. When it is warm enough, treat sheds, fences and trellis with wood preservative; brushes and rollers are fine for most things, however a sprayer is well worth buying for tricky projects such as woven panels! Now is the time to wage war on slugs and snails. They To contact
love tulips and delicacies such as the delicious young shoots of delphiniums and the like, so use pet-friendly slug pellets, and drench the ground around hostas with liquid slug killer to exterminate slugs below the surface. Keep an eye out for snails and pick them off - what you do with them is up to you. Birds are your friends here - flat stones artfully located are useful accessories for birds to practise their snail catching techniques.

pulling them apart into bunches of 3 or more bulbs and replanting in dug over soil with some bonemeal incorporated into it. Make sure you work quickly so the bulbs don’t have a chance to dry out, and water in if the soil is at all dry. Sprinkle general purpose fertiliser on beds and borders and erect supports for herbaceous plants such as peonies, delphiniums and oriental poppies that would otherwise flop. Make your own using hazel or birch twigs for a natural look that will fade into the border as your plants grow. Carry on lifting and dividing overgrown clumps of perennials and split polyanthus plants once they have finished flowering. Plant hardier summer bulbs and unsprouted dahlia tubers (at least 4 inches deep in good, rich soil). Sow hardy annuals such as nasturtium and calendula in drifts - clashing colours just don’t matter in a garden, but remember to plant taller plants behind shorter ones. Wait a while to plant cornflowers and larkspurs until the soil is warmer. Sow sweet peas outdoors (soak the seeds overnight to improve germination) and plant out those raised under cover. Feed your pots and containers and brighten them up with cheery primroses, violas, pots of spring bulbs and spring heathers. Packing them densely in single colours makes for a stunning display - or try combinations like cream and regal purple for a striking impact. Summer bedding is now available in the centres as young plants for you to grow on - much easier than growing from seed or cuttings. Remember though, do not be beguiled by the odd warm day - frost will wreack havoc with these plants unless protected.

FIONA’S WORD
By Fiona Dwyer, broadcast journalist, PR & media consultant, slave to 2 children and a husband.
Spring is in the air I love the Spring! It’s time to stop hibernating and to start clearing out the cobwebs, both actual and metaphorical! I love the longer days and love seeing the new leaves and flowers popping up all over the place. Saying that, with the mild winter we’ve had, my daffodils have been utterly confused and started growing back in January! Regardless, it’s a great time of year. It makes me start clearing out all the “stuff” you collect over the last year and getting rid of it – although in my case, I think I currently have a couple of years worth of “stuff” to clear out. It’s the Springtime that invigorates me for the year ahead. Doesn’t it do the same for you? Happy days!

Unpredictable cats
You may remember me telling you how we rescued a couple of kittens last year. Well, those cute little kittens have grown up to be absolutely massive cats – and they aren’t even a year old! Now, we’ve always had cats in our house – and they’ve always quite happily used the cat flap – but for some reason these two simply refuse to do so! I have no idea why. They know where it is and we’ve shown them how to use it, but regardless of that they continue to scratch at the door every time they want to go out or come back in. In fact, they’d rather stay out all night than take it upon themselves to use their own little door. Honestly, half of the time I feel like they have employed me as their own personal door monitor. One of them in particular scratches to come in, has a few mouthfuls of food, then about a minute later scratches to go back out! Let’s just say it can be annoying! So, if any of you have any ideas how to encourage my cats to use the cat flap, please feel free to let me know!
