Hello Readers. Welcome to the October edition, in this months magazine we start our annual Christmas Countdown Feature for you to enjoy. We run this feature for the three months leading upto the big day. It is always useful to remind us of how soon Christmas comes around and the advertisers like to give us all a little nudge to either get the house ready for Christmas or to buy their products or services as a gift for those that we care about. Please let our advertisers know that you saw their advert in the DNfourteen Magazine when responding - they do like to know that their advertising is working for them. If you are feeling lucky this month, why not enter one of our competitions, we have got tickets to see Disney On Ice presents Frozen at Sheffield Arena up for grabs! We also have Tickets for Soul II Soul, New Model Army and a fantastic Ultimate 70’s Christmas Party themed minicruise to Amsterdam courstesy of P&O Ferries. Have you got a story or item of local interest that you would like to share in DNfourteen? If so, please email it to us and you never know, you might find yourself in print. Enjoy the magazine and good luck with the competitions.

Local News
Council updates walking and cycling maps to help people explore the East Riding With the success of Team GB at the Olympic and Paralympic Games inspiring people to get active, East Riding of Yorkshire Council has reaffirmed its commitment to promoting walking and cycling, especially for shorter journeys. Team GB took home a combined haul of 214 medals from the Olympic and Paralympic Games in Rio de Janeiro earlier this year and this has encouraged further interest in cycling and keeping fit.
4
To celebrate this, the council’s transport policy team has recently updated the walking and cycle maps for Beverley, Bridlington,
Driffield, Goole and Haltemprice, which have proved very popular with local residents and visitors to the area. Walking and cycling offer a healthier and often cheaper alternative to travelling by car, and encouraging more people to travel on foot or by bike can also help reduce congestion on local roads. To help and encourage members of the public to make more short local trips on foot or by bike, the council’s free walking and cycling maps have been designed to help plan safe journeys in and around towns in the East Riding. They include information on local walking and cycling routes and facilities, and also show walking and cycling times from the outskirts of the towns. The maps can be viewed and downloaded from the council’s website at: www.eastriding. gov.uk/council/plans-and-policies/other-plans-and-policiesinformation/transport/transport-policy/ A free copy of any of the maps can also be obtained by emailing transport.policy@eastriding.gov.uk or call (01482) 393969.

SOUL II SOUL Tour
SOUL II SOUL play SHEFFIELD – Foundry on Friday 25th November 2016! There were the resident club nights all over the world; live concert tours; radio and TV appearances; Jazzie had his own show on London’s Kiss FM and there was even an Adventures of the Funki Dreds comic book. And, of course, Soul II Soul enjoyed the type of chart success – notably with Keep On Movin’ and ‘Back To Life’ – that made them household names all over the world. To date Soul II Soul have sold over 10 million albums in over 35 territories worldwide and have product on over 200 compilation CDs while Jazzie has accreditation on over 35 million albums in over 100 territories. They’ve performed in over 20 countries, and appeared at some of the most famous venues in the world including Wembley and New York’s Universal Ample Theatre.
6
Into more recent times, musically Soul II Soul has kept itself contemporary – “Keep On Movin’’ was used for the high profile Renault Clio television ads. Mary J. Blige and Sean Kingston have both released cover versions of “Back To Life’; while Beverly Knight released her version of “FairPlay” in 2011. A year later,
“Back to Life” was featured in the Opening Ceremony of the London 2012 Olympics. Tickets for the SHEFFIELD - show are available from: Sheffield – Foundry Box Office No: 08444 771000 Website – http://www.ticketweb.co.uk/event/lud2511s Doors Open – 8.00pm

NEW MODEL ARMY play
LEEDS – Stylus (University Union) on
Saturday 12th November 2016! New Model Army are a legendary global underground cult band.
Formed by Justin Sullivan in Bradford in 1980, their beginnings were inspired by Northern Soul, Punk Rock and the incendiary atmosphere of the times.
8
Since then, they have had a long, creative and eventful journey. They have been massively influential in ‘post-punk’, ‘folk-rock’,
Without a ‘genre’ audience, and never having had a Top 20 hit single in any country, New Model Army still have album sales in the millions, have attracted some of the biggest producers on the planet (Glyn Johns, Tom Dowd, Andy Wallace, Bob Clearmountain) and have built up an almost religious devotion amongst fans. This is a remarkable band - as hungry and focused as ever, with a continually regenerating audience and insatiable creative ambition. ”Winter” New Model Army’s 14th studio album was released to rave reviews on Aug 26, needless to say they’re really looking forward to getting out and playing it live. Special tour guests are Mad Dog Mcrea a unique mixture of folk rock, pop, gypsy jazz, bluegrass and ‘shake your ass’ music. From self-penned songs of adventure, drinking, love and life, to traditional songs of gypsies, fairies, legless pirates and black flies - Mad Dog never fail to capture their audience with their infectious songs.

Christmas Countdown
Last year 1 in 5 parents returned gifts before Christmas to find cheaper alternatives Some 20% of parents are returning gifts before Christmas Day after locating the same item for a more competitive price elsewhere. The process of giving and receiving doesn’t always go according to plan, especially when trying to keep up with your budget. One in five cautious parents are likely to return gifts they have bought even before Christmas has arrived because they found a cheaper alternative elsewhere, according to new research.
12
In 2015 some 20 per cent of UK parents returned gifts they had purchased before the festive day according to a survey of 2,000 parents. One in ten parents said they would take out loans to get their children presents and one in three customers return at least one gift a year after Christmas, rising to 40 per cent of millennials and falling to 20 per cent of over-55’s.
Please mention
Parents seem willing to spend more than usual to get their child the most wanted item on their wish list, and retailers should ensure their products are priced competitively to avoid returns. Inevitably during the festive period, demand for toys and gifts increases. Prices are driven by parents willing to go above and beyond to get their child the must-have toy for Christmas. What parents are willing to pay is the new standard in pricing, but retailers should be prudent to ensure their gifts are competitively priced to avoid the returns. According to another national survey over a third of people have had their Christmas Day ruined by a misjudged present. The survey also revealed the top 10 toys children of the eighties and nineties wanted but never received. Continued on Page 14

West Park Wash Day
Find It In DNfourteen Magazine
Goole Town Council organised fun activities for kids at West Park during the Summer holidays. Goole Museum gave children the chance to experience an ‘Old Fashioned Wash Day’ and feel what it was like to wash in the past before machines did all the hard work. With a selection of dolly tubs, possers, mangle and washboards, and lots of willing young helpers, the band stand was soon festooned with washing. Debbie Hardy, Museum Curator said “it was lovely to see youngsters having so much fun doing washing - who knew a mangle could be so much fun? There were some children who came last year who couldn’t reach the mangle handle, but this year they were like old masters at it.”

Gardening
October Gardener Start your compost Get your compost going by buying a compost bin or building a partially enclosed and easily accessible area for a heap. It is essential to replace the goodness in soil and autumn produces quantities of garden waste that will add invaluable organic richness back into your soil next spring. Remember to add a variety of different materials; spent vegetable plants are ideal, but NEVER add diseased or pestridden material to your compost heap - it will nurture whatever villain you are trying to eliminate with loving care! Clear garden debris Keep weeding; most perennial weeds are susceptible to weedkiller this month and systemic weedkillers will carry on working throughout the winter. Also clear any debris and diseased material from your garden. Pests and diseases that overwinter in your garden will reappear next spring with a vengeance so get rid of them now. Burn diseased material and put the rest of your garden rubbish (apart from woody stems) in the compost.

Clean out the greenhouse Once tomatoes and other greenhouse crops are over, give the
Sponsored by Heritage Landscape Centre greenhouse a thorough clean to prevent pests from making a home in that lovely warm environment, ready to leap into action next spring. Dig clay soil If your soil is heavy clay, start digging it over now - add plenty of organic matter to improve the quality and pea shingle to improve the drainage. It can be left in a pretty rough state over the winter when the cold will break the lumps down, making spring planting infinitely easier! Watering Should September turn into an Indian summer, remember to keep watering thoroughly once or twice a week rather than little and often. Containers and hanging baskets need watering every day. For recently planted large shrubs or trees, leave a hose trickling around the base for an hour. The same goes for established plants in dry periods - camellias, rhododendrons, azaleas and hydrangeas will abort next season’s flowers if they get too dry.

Gardening
Sponsored by Heritage Landscape Centre Ensure trees or shrubs planted in the last couple of years on lawns or in areas of rough grass have a circle of clear earth around them - this MUST be kept clear or grass will prevent essential moisture getting through. Mulching with bark or compost will help. Planting With the ideal planting conditions of autumn (warm moist soil), now is the time to plant container grown shrubs, trees, fruit bushes, perennials and bulbs. The key to successful planting is to water in well. Soak the rootball in a bucket until no air bubbles come to the surface, dig the planting hole, fill with water and allow to drain away. Place the plant in the hole, fill with soil, firm gently and water well with a watering can - this will give the plant a huge advantage over one planted with a dry rootball in a dry hole and watered only on the surface.
