Andrew’s Mobile Phone Campaign Update Local MP Andrew Percy is keeping up the pressure on mobile phone providers as part of his campaign for improved signal coverage locally. Local MP Andrew Percy is keeping up the pressure on mobile phone providers as part of his campaign for improved signal coverage locally. Andrew surveyed thousands of residents last year to confirm the signal coverage in the constituency. The results from this survey were provided to each of the four main mobile phone providers – EE, Vodafone, O2 Telefonica and Three – so that they could use this information as part of their improvement plans.

4

All four providers committed to improving signal across the constituency and Andrew agreed to meet them individually in the New Year to check progress.

“There are still some real problem areas and I raised this with Vodafone for their attention. We have though also seen improvements, with some areas already benefiting from improvement works. I’ll be meeting with the other providers shortly and I will continue to keep residents informed.”

Andrew says, “I was delighted by the number of responses I received to my survey last year and the enthusiasm for my campaign, which highlighted the need for real improvements in mobile signal coverage locally. “I agreed to meet with all of the providers again and the first meeting I had was with Vodafone. Vodafone reiterated its continued commitment to increase mobile internet coverage in our area over the next 18 months, including the latest 4G technologies. “By the end of this investment programme Vodafone has told me it is committed to providing the vast majority of local people with good quality indoor coverage and near universal outdoor coverage. “These improvements will involve new masts or mast upgrades and, as usual, time scales are dependent on local permissions, but we are moving forward. The upgrade will be done as and when possible, with some sites scheduled to be upgraded in the next few months!

Valentine’s Day

THE LEGEND OF ST. VALENTINE The history of Valentine’s Day–and the story of its patron saint–is shrouded in mystery. We do know that February has long been celebrated as a month of romance, and that St. Valentine’s Day, as we know it today, contains vestiges of both Christian and ancient Roman tradition. But who was Saint Valentine, and how did he become associated with this ancient rite? The Catholic Church recognizes at least three different saints named Valentine or Valentinus, all of whom were martyred. One legend contends that Valentine was a priest who served during the third century in Rome. When Emperor Claudius II decided that single men made better soldiers than those with wives and families, he outlawed marriage for young men. Valentine, realizing the injustice of the decree, defied Claudius and continued to perform marriages for young lovers in secret. When Valentine’s actions were discovered, Claudius ordered that he be put to death. Other stories suggest that Valentine may have been killed for

attempting to help Christians escape harsh Roman prisons, where they were often beaten and tortured. According to one legend, an imprisoned Valentine actually sent the first “valentine” greeting himself after he fell in love with a young girl who visited him during his confinement. Before his death, it is alleged that he wrote her a letter signed “From your Valentine,” an expression that is still in use today. Although the truth behind the Valentine legends is murky, the stories all emphasize his appeal as a sympathetic, heroic and–most importantly–romantic figure. By the Middle Ages, perhaps thanks to this reputation, Valentine would become one of the most popular saints in England and France. In Great Britain, Valentine’s Day began to be popularly celebrated around the 17th century. By the middle of the 18th, it was common for friends and lovers of all social classes to exchange small tokens of affection or handwritten notes, and by 1900 printed cards began to replace written letters due to improvements in printing technology. Ready-made cards were an easy way for people to express their emotions in a time when direct expression of one’s feelings was discouraged. Cheaper postage rates also contributed to an increase in the popularity of sending Valentine’s Day greetings.

Learn To Cope With Wedding Day Stress To every bride, the wedding day is probably the most special event of her life. Unfortunately, with great events comes great responsibility and, inevitably, tons of stress.

First of all, brides feel the pressure of having to look their best. Being the center of attention is not as easy as it seems. This is the day when a woman reaches the climax of her feminism and is allowed to pamper herself up as much as she can. High expectations don’t always lead to happiness.

12

As weird as it may seem, the less expectations you have from this day, the more you will actually be able to enjoy yourself. This means that you should be careful not to stain your wedding dress, but if that happens, don’t stress over it too much. If you feel that emotions are taking over, don’t worry: it’s perfectly normal. Another important thing to remember is that the wedding day is not really the responsibility of a single person. It’s a complex sum of several responsibilities of several people, like yourself, your wedding party, your

officiant, the vendors you work with, the photographer, etc. If you are not willing to accept imperfection, chance, risk or mistakes, you will have at least 1 hour of suffering on your wedding day. Always try to create a win-win situation, even on your wedding day. You need to establish 2 positives: one if something goes well and the other, if something goes bad. In order to do this, you need to be a flexible person. For example: what happens if it rains on your wedding day. If it’s

Spring Weddings sunny: you win (I’m not going to state the obvious reasons why). And if it’s rainy, you win again: because rain is a great element to add to your wedding photos and an opportunity to add even more color to the happiest day of your life with some really pastel umbrellas. So, who loses here? You got it: no one!

in the situation is trying to obtain the maximum amount of love and attention that they can possibly get. If we are concerned about not getting love and appreciation on our wedding day, our mind will learn to trigger mechanisms that will sooth us and confirm some lessons we’ve learned in the past.

Remember to never use words inside your head that could only make a bad thing, worse. When you feel something is not going your way on your wedding day, step aside, take a deep breath, see how that makes you feel, what’s your instinctual reaction, what’s your secondary reaction and see if the problem could be solved by someone else.

When a person is feeling really under the weather and shows signs of anger and even cries, the others will inevitably be more sympathetic, and thus lower their expectations. Even more, some of your guests or people from your wedding party may start feeling guilty for what happened, which leads to complexes of inferiority. These mechanisms are not really that intelligent. They kind of remind you of a childhood behaviour, when you would cry if things didn’t really go your way and adults would do their best to cheer you up. This is not exactly the adult way to handle a crisis when you’re all grown up.

Why do brides cry?

14

As a woman, you most likely know what it feels like when someone or something messes with one of your wellestablished plans. When it comes to a wedding, there are so many variables that may change: napkins may have a different colour than your whole wedding décor or rain might “ruin” your wedding photo shoot. Such unpleasant surprises often lead to frustrations that are just ready to explode. Psychologists say that birthdays or wedding are important in the life of every man or woman, so everyone

Weddings are eventually forgotten. This is both good news and bad news. If people remember your wedding 10 years on, you’ve probably accomplished something that not many couples can. If something goes bad, maybe oblivion is not the worst case scenario.

Icy Road Conditions Motorists are being urged to take extra care on the roads in the days ahead as icy conditions are predicted for the East Riding. A predicted combination of freezing temperatures, rain and sleet could lead to slippery road conditions in many parts of the county, and even colder weather is forecast over the coming weeks. The council’s gritting lorries will be been working, treating the precautionary network of roads with rock salt.

The council is issuing the following advice to help residents drive safely during winter conditions:

But the fleet will continue to make sure roads are well gritted ahead of possible snow showers, frost and ice.

Driving on ice and slush:

Mike Featherby, the council’s head of streetscene services, said: “Our gritters will continue to treat the network” However, with more freezing temperatures, snow and bad weather forecast he went on to say:

“We would advise drivers to take extra care, plan their journey in advance and allow extra time for travel.”

SCHOOL LEAGUE TABLES Major improvements in GCSE mathematics have helped East Riding schools to continue to deliver ‘gold standard’ results in line with the national performance.

22

The improvements have moved the East Riding up to 57th out of 152 local authorities for mathematics, which is third in the Yorkshire and Humber region. Tables published by the Dept. for Education show that national issues with English GCSE have resulted in a minority of East Riding schools having lower results for English. This has resulted in the county’s overall ranking for the gold standard – five top grades including English and maths – dropping to 91st place. However, the new measure to feature in the table next year, Progress 8, which will be the basis of the rankings in 2016, has improved significantly, as has the average point score. A third of East Riding schools are considerably above the national average for Progress 8 and it is hoped to improve this in the first year of the new measure.

Please mention

This year East Riding schools achieved an average of 56.3 per cent of the top grades including English and maths, in line with the national figure of 57 per cent. At A-level, the average points score per student in the East Riding has improved to be in the top quartile nationally at 786 points. The value-added measure for the East Riding has also improved to its best ever level, so students are making better progress than ever in their school sixth forms. Councillor Julie Abraham, East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s portfolio holder for children, young people and education, said: “The overall performance of East Riding Schools continues to show that they deliver good outcomes. “This, alongside improved outcomes in inspections shows that the quality of provision is improving. “Improvements in mathematics are really encouraging and officers are working closely with the minority of schools that saw a decline in English to bring about rapid improvement by next summer. These tables should reinforce the confidence that parents have in our schools and the standard of the provision for their children.” “The council is committed to further improving the standard of provision in our schools with our ‘Excellence for All’ fund of over £2million.” Mike Furbank, the council’s head of children, young people, education and schools, said: “Whilst the overall gold standard rankings have declined we are clearly in line with the national performance and this is encouraging.”

Gardening

Sponsored by Heritage Landscape Centre

February Gardening General tasks and garden maintenance

Continue to dig over existing beds and borders, again incorporating as much organic matter as you can. Forking over not only helps prepare the soil for spring, it helps reduce pests by exposing them to hungry birds. Although temperatures should start to rise this month, there is still a risk of frost and even snow. Protect vulnerable plants, pots and taps from frost by wrapping insulation such as garden fleece around them and check pots and containers are raised off the ground if possible. Tender trees and shrubs will thank you for a generous application of dry mulch to protect their roots from freezing conditions.

32

stack it upside down somewhere out of the way - after a year or two it will rot down into fantastic compost. Alternatively chop it up and bury upside down in the planting hole a good spade’s depth down.

Beware - if you just dig it in the buried grass will regrow Once the ground isn’t frozen, make new beds and borders and regrow and regrow and... - mark the shape with sand trickled from a bottle, remove Remember not to let leaves accumulate around alpines the top layer of growing vegetation and dig the ground - they will die if left damp for long. Cover bare patches over, incorporating as much organic matter as possible. around clumps with gritty compost to encourage If you are making a bed in the lawn, remove the turf and regrowth.

When the weather allows, carry on clearing paths, check walls (but avoid concreting until there is no chance of frost), clean and insulate greenhouses and ensure heaters are working properly. Even a little insulation will make a huge difference to your heating bill. Clean and repair your garden tools, book the lawn mower in for a service and check garden furniture for any rot. When it is warm enough, treat sheds, fences and trellis with wood preservative; brushes and rollers are fine for most things, however a sprayer is well worth buying for tricky projects such as woven panels! Keep off the lawn as much as possible whilst it is still wet damage to waterlogged lawns is easily inflicted. If, towards the end of the month, the weather turns dry and mild, the lawn is firm and the grass is starting to look a little shaggy, give it a very gentle mow with the blades on the highest setting - don’t be tempted if conditions are wet!

Also, if you are planning a new lawn, now is probably the earliest you could start preparing the ground for seeding or laying turf. Ask for advice in your local garden centre if you are unsure as to how to begin! Birds It’s another lean month for wildlife and especially birds. Putting out fresh water and food is really important, especially on cold days. You’ve heard it all before, but please do buy good quality bird food or fat/suet balls and check that water is not frozen.

Is your conservatory TOO COLD to use this winter? An insulated ceiling from Inceil will transform your conservatory so it is warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer - so you can enjoy your conservatory all year round. Affordable, effective and fitted in just 2 days

FIONA’S WORD

By Fiona Dwyer, broadcast journalist, PR & media consultant, slave to 2 children and a husband.

FED UP OF PHISHING? I don’t know about you but I am really fed up with phishing emails. You know the ones I’m talking about. Emails with invoices attached claiming I owe hundreds and sometimes thousands of pounds for products I haven’t bought! Emails telling me thousands of pounds have been deposited into my bank account and that I should open the attachment for details! (Clearly you must never do this because they probably contain a virus.) I’m even getting emails from abroad from people asking me to be to be their friend. Do they (the hackers behind the phishing) really think I’m so stupid as to not realize that all their messages are identical, they’ve just signed off with a different name?! And I’m getting emails about things that, quite frankly, 38 are a bit shocking! I will say no more! Except, perhaps, to say that these phishers need to find alternative bait – or better still hang up their rods for good!

LOVE IS IN THE AIR…… Or is it? Yes it’s that time of year again when red roses, champagne, chocolates and romantic dinners will be bought and booked for that one special day of the year – Valentine’s Day! Of course, if you are a regular reader of my column, you will know that I am under no illusions of any of the above. “I can tell you I love you on any day of the year! It’s just an excuse for companies to inflate their prices and make more money,” says my husband.” Sadly, I don’t necessarily disagree with him. But I am a romantic at heart and although I can do without the roses and champagne, I wouldn’t say “No!” to chocolate! What? I’m just saying!!!!!
