Andrew Welcomes Action to Tackle Nuisance Calls Andrew has welcomed new rules which require cold callers to display numbers when calling and face stronger penalties for nuisance calls. Under the new rules, which are intended to crack down on nuisance calls and come into force next month, direct marketing companies must display their numbers so that those they call are able to block them or report nuisance calls to the Information Commissioner. The rules will apply even when the company’s call centres are based abroad and mean nuisance callers face stronger penalties and investigation by the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO). Companies that make nuisance calls risk fines of up to £2 million, and could face a further £500,000 fine from the ICO if they continue to undertake these calls.
4
This latest move follows news that a substantial number of fines, totalling £895,000, have been issued so far by the ICO for nuisance calls. In 2015, this Government made it easier to fine nuisance callers by removing the need for consumers to prove that unwanted marketing calls were causing substantial distress and damage.
Andrew reports, “Nuisance calls are frustrating for many of us but for some, they can actually be very intimidating. I’ve previously met with the government’s communications regulator, Ofcom, and lobbied Ministers on the need for tougher action on this issue. The Government has introduced the ability to levy huge fines on companies breaking the rules and gave more powers to the regulators to trace companies and act. These new rules mean that residents can actually see the number that is calling, so they can chose to ignore calls easier and also report numbers more accurately to help the regulators take action.” Nuisance calls can be reported to the ICO online: https://ico.org. uk/concerns/marketing/ or by calling 0303 123 1113

How to do it in 5 easy steps
the bracket into place, checking one last time that it’s straight with the spirit level.
1) Decide where in your room you want the floating shelf/shelves to go. Use a spirit level and a pencil to mark a horizontal line on the wall the same length as the shelf, as well as a vertical line in the centre.
5) Slide the shelf onto the bracket. Fix in place with the screws provided, using the pre-drilled holes on the underside of the shelf.
Check out Ikea, Tesco Direct and Homebase 2) Place the bracket on the horizontal line, for a range of floating shelves. using the vertical line to make sure it’s centred. Mark the position of the screw holes on the wall with the pencil. Then, using the wire/pipe detector, check the area of wall that you will be drilling has no cables or pipes.
Weekend Project: Tile a Chimney Breast
3) Drill into the wall where your screw holes are marked (longer shelves will have more screw holes).
10
4) If your wall is made of brick or concrete, tap Rawlplugs into the holes with the hammer so they’re flush with the wall. Screw
Artisan tiles are too beautiful just for the bathroom - use them to add a neo-Moorish mood to the living room. How to: Start tiling from above the mantel, or, if you don’t have one, start from a baton levelled with a spirit level (not the skirting or floor as these can be uneven). Apply a thick layer of tile adhesive to the wall using a tile float (a metal spatula with a serracted edge). Use tile spacers, or, if the tiles are uneven, judge the space by eye. Grout tiles after placing them in position using a grouting float. If you are looking to pick up reclaimed artisan tiles in the Hull and East Riding area you should check out local reclaimation yards, you can also get the look with new reproduction tiles which are available from the major suppliers.

Britain’s property market is going to implode as housing nears peak affordability Property prices in Britain may be surging due to a horrendous imbalance of supply and demand — but the market is poised to implode. Why? Because Britons are not earning enough money to either get on the housing ladder or are spending such a large portion of their wages on mortgages that may not be sustainable.
12
Well, not unless everyone suddenly gets a huge pay rise over the next year or so. That’s the assumption in the latest figures from think tank Resolution Foundation, which show that lower- and middle-income
households are spending 26% of their salaries on housing, compared to 18% back in 1995. In London, households spend 28% of their income on housing. The think tank said this is the equivalent to adding 10 percentage points onto income tax. Only the rich are not feeling the pressure of rising house prices. Higher-income households spend 18% of their income on housing, compared to 14% in 1995.

House & Home The average price to buy a house in Britain now stands at £291,504, according to the Office for National Statistics. Meanwhile, the average London property price is at a huge £551,000. To put this into perspective, Resolution Foundation estimated that median income, at £24,300, is only around 3% higher than it was when the credit crunch hit in 2007/2008. Considering the average deposit to secure a home is around 10% of the total property price, this means Britons are taking on huge amounts of debt and eating into the little savings they have to buy a home. People feel comfortable taking on more debt because interest rates have been at a record low since 2009, at 0.5%. Lower interest rates make the cost of borrowing cheaper, so servicing a mortgage is currently manageable for most.
14
“Spiralling house prices and stagnating wage growth created a growing wedge
To contact
between housing costs and incomes, which peaked on the eve of the crash,” said Lindsay Judge, senior policy analyst at the Resolution Foundation. So the market is poised on a knife edge between interest rates and wages. If interest rates were to rise — and they will eventually — it could prove a major problem for the Britons who already spend 25-28% of their salaries on housing. Similarly, if another downturn depresses wages, mortgage payments will become an increasing portion of their income even without an interest rate increase.

Wesley Place to the rear was originally used as a school and is now a Community Hall. Toll Bridge In 1777 for £1,850 the Snaith Toll Bridge was built by Thomas Stapleton of Carlton Towers to “improve the flax trade and prevent the loss of coffins travelling to Snaith for burial via ferry”. In 1928 the new bridge was built to avoid the ‘exorbitant tolls’.
Cowick Hall The prestigious Dawnay family moved to Cowick in the 15th Century. In 1680 King Charles II granted the title Viscount Downe to Sir John Dawnay who built the hall as his residence. In 1963 following a period of decline, the hall was purchased and restored by Croda and is now the headquarters of Croda Chemicals International. Beware of Fraudsters! Britain’s small businesses are losing more than £9bn a year to fraudsters who send false invoices, viruses posing as bills, or who pose as suppliers on the phone, it has emerged.
30
Of more than 1,000 small-to-medium sized businesses (SMEs) surveyed by invoice network Tungsten, almost half had received a suspicious invoice or been a victim of invoice fraud in the last 12 months. The average firm loses £1,658 per year to invoice fraud, and one is six companies estimates that fraud has cost them more than £5,000 in the past year. Steven Mitchell, founder of CompareTheCoffin.com, which helps bereaved customers find better deals on coffins, recently received an order for six coffins to export overseas. The customer placed the order via email and claimed that he didn’t own a credit card and needed to pay by cheque. “The order seemed genuine enough so I gave him my bank details,” said Mr Mitchell. “Before I knew it there was £64,000 in my account.” This was £58,000 more than billed. “I looked into the order and saw that a cheque had been paid in to the Ruislip branch of Santander and realised he wasn’t abroad.”

CompareTheCoffin.com manufactures each coffin on demand but Mr Mitchell decided to wait for the cheque to clear before making the orders. “I contacted the shipping agent who said, ‘Not him again’,” Mr Mitchel said. “The same guy had been operating with 40 different names.” Under this scam, the fraudster requests a refund of the overpayment, which is usually arranged by the business. In the meanwhile, the cheque is cancelled leaving the business out of pocket. “I’m a one-man band so I keep track of all orders and payments but if I wasn’t on top of things, I would have lost £64,000,” Mr Mitchell said. Mr Mitchell now prefers to process all payments using credit cards for security and insists on speaking to customers over the phone. He verifies the identity of each customer using online tools. The identity and location of the fraudster remains unknown, so Mr Mitchell did not report the incident to the police. “I had no evidence of who he was,” he claimed. “There was no way to track him down. “But I emailed him again and said I’d made up a special coffin just for him and wanted to deliver it in person.” “Incidents of invoice fraud are underreported,” warned Pauline Smith, head of the UK’s national centre for reporting fraud and internet crime, Action Fraud. “It’s difficult to know the true scale of this fraud type but we do know that it prevails across all types of business and no one industry is immune.”

BUDDING SCHOOL AND COMMUNITY GARDENERS INVITED TO TAKE PART IN NEW GARDEN FESTIVAL Schools and community groups across Hull and East Yorkshire are being invited to take part in an exciting new garden festival being organised by Heritage Landscape and Garden Centre, near Melton. It’s hoped that with the help of the garden centre’s own team of experts, and local radio and TV personalities, entrants will be spurred on to produce some fantastic gardens, the theme of which is entirely their own interpretation of ‘Nature’s Finest’.
32
The event, the Yorkshire Garden Festival, is free to enter and is open to nurseries and schools, as well as local community groups. A pallet will be left with the school entrants so their creations can be transported to the garden centre however the community groups will have a plot available to them on site from the beginning of April.
They will then be judged by both the general public and a team of gardening experts over a series of dates throughout the festival, which starts on 30th April and runs until 29th August. Each community garden will receive £500 worth of credit towards plants and materials, schools will each receive £100 towards their creation, and at the end of To contact
the festival there will be the chance to win The People’s Award. Heritage Landscape Centre is one of Yorkshire’s premier landscaping companies with an award- winning coffee shop and restaurant. schools and community groups across the area. We have wanted to work with the local community for some time now and already work with charities and find it so rewarding. “We know that there is so much talent out there that remains untapped and unrecognised and so we decided to do something about it. We’ve got the facilities here and want to make the best use of them. “There is nothing like this. In fact the nearest Garden Festival which runs along these lines is in Scotland so we would encourage everyone to get Hull and East Yorkshire firmly on the map.”

FIONA’S WORD

Amazing Women
38
I am thrilled to once again be compering the Women of Achievement awards in November. Organised by Women in Business it is an event that never fails to inspire me. The stories of finalists and winners are not only moving, they motivate me to be a better person and a better businesswoman. Tickets for the event sold out in a matter of days but now is the time to think about women that go above and beyond what others do. If you know a woman like that, nominate them and give them the credit and recognition they deserve. Or if you are that woman, nominate yourself! The awards ceremony is also known for having a string of fantastic guest speakers over the years – and this year is no different. This year we have the wonderful journalist, television presenter and founder of Childline Dame Esther Rantzen. As a journalist myself I, for one, can’t wait to meet her.
Making The World A Better Place
Talking of being a better person and better businesswoman, I wanted to tell you about an amazing project that helps businesses of all sizes around the world give back in meaningful ways, creating long-lasting impacts and an even greater sense of purpose. Imagine every time you had a meal, a hungry child also receives a meal….or if every time you had a cup of coffee someone received access to life-saving water…..or imagine every time you bought a book, a tree was planted……or when an accounting firm signed a new client, a family in Kenya receives goat to create a sustainable income. You get what I mean. Well B1G1 (Buy one, Give one) was established 9 years ago to do exactly that. There are literally hundreds of projects you can choose from and you decide how much you give – the smallest amount is about 70p – and every single penny goes directly to the people who need it most, changing their lives forever. It’s brilliant because it’s so simple. It’s like the café in Hull that encourages you to buy an extra coffee or meal which is given to a homeless person. If you want to know more, visit www.b1g1.com.
