Hello Readers Welcome to the joint July and August Summer edition of your DNfourteen Magazine. In this months magazine we have a special Summer Daze feature which has pages of great advertisers that are promoting Summer Events, Venues for dining out and treatments to help you feel and look good and get the most from the summer. This months issue is packed full of ideas of things to do and places to go with the children during the summer holidays. So if your children are at a loose end then please read the articles within and get your children out and about enjoying themselves. Alot of the ideas and suggested places to go look quite appealing to me too - so I might just have to sample a few of them myself!! If you are feeling lucky this month, why not enter our competitions, we have 3 this month; with tickets to see Gary Numan, The South and Andrea Bocelli up for grabs!
Please note that whilst we take care to be accurate, no liability will be accepted under any circumstances should any of the content of this magazine be incorrect. Don’t forget there is still plenty of time to visit the Yorkshire Garden Festival - which is happening just down the A63 at Melton. Have you got a story or item of local interest that you would like to share in DNfourteen? If so, please email it to us and you never know, you might find yourself in print. Enjoy the magazine and (fingers crossed) a little bit of the summer sunshine too!

GARY NUMAN to play Sheffield Foundry on 15th September 2016
I wouldn’t be here today. Splinter was widely considered to be one of the best, if not the best album I’ve ever made. With that achievement I’ve finally learned to be proud of my history, and that’s what these shows are all about.”
Following the success of his Sold-Out London residence last October and the Sold Out Manchester & Cork shows that followed. Gary Numan is back with a September 2016 UK Tour which sees him playing a set compromising of material from his albums ‘Replicas’, ‘The Pleasure Principle’ and ‘Teleken’. Following on from the success of his Top 20 album, Splinter (Songs From A Broken Mind), and accompanying two-year Splinter world tour, electronic and industrial music pioneer Gary Numan returns to the UK to celebrate his classic albums Replicas, The Pleasure Principle and Telekon in September 2016. “Having spent most of the last couple of years touring Splinter, with the release of the new album released later this year, 2016 seems an ideal time to revisit the three albums that changed my life,” says Numan. “These three albums are now considered classics and playing tracks from each one in September, will be very special for me. I very rarely look back at past glories but, with these shows, I intend to not only look back, but to celebrate those early days. Without those songs and experiences

Fun activities for kids over the summer Make the most of the long holidays and encourage your child or teenager to swap some of their screen time for a whole new adventure with our fun activities for kids ideas! From simple beginner ideas to projects they can use to develop new skills, these inspiring activities for children should keep them busy while being educational too. Grow Your Own If your child starts growing fruit and veg in early summer, they could get really impressive results before term starts again. Find ideas in our article Gardening for kids on page 34.

Camp ‘In’ for the Summer Holidays Suggest camping in their bedroom in a pop up tent, or an improvised campsite on their bedroom
floor. Apart from meals and snacks (don’t encourage mice!) let your kids create their own world – a new landscape they can ‘travel’ to. Model Ambition If you’re stuck for ideas for indoor activities for kids, set aside a ‘messy space’ where they can get stuck into a model making project without having to clear it away every time the kitchen table is needed. This gives them time to build something really amazing. Inspire teenagers to have a go at a full-on art project and help them research cheap arts and crafts materials like paints and clay.

It could be one photograph taken at the same time each day, wherever they are, or a box of souvenirs – funny, amazing and interesting keepsakes. As well as running, swimming and football, unearth a few more unusual sports to do. Explore History Forget the dusty stately homes of your youth – nowadays castles and mansions are packed with exciting experiences for the kids. DN14 Top Tip Summer jobs and volunteering are great ways for older teenagers to learn new skills and get experience, whether they want to just have fun or find out more about a potential career choice. Gardening for kids
Sponsored by Heritage Landscape Centre
Use your own garden as an excuse to spend time with your family and you can all get some exercise while having fun. Planting tips and ideas • Choose bedding plants that will look promising as soon as they go in the ground. Pansies, geraniums and primroses are usually safe bets with pretty results. • Keep mess under control by getting your child to plant flowers in pots that can sit outside but don’t require lots of digging. The pot marigold can be planted in spring and within 10 weeks produces lots of flowers. • For something different and durable, sow cornflower seeds in one corner of your garden and wait for their vibrant bluey purple flowers spring up. • If your child wants to plant something from seed, keep up their interest by taking regular photos to chart their bloom’s progress as the weeks go by.
34
Gardening in small outside spaces • If you don’t have any or very much garden space, try windowsill pots (herbs and small tomatoes your child can then help you cook with when they’re ready).
• Ask a neighbour or elderly relative if you can help look after their garden. It’s still great fun and will bring great pleasure to someone else. • Find a local community gardening project. You can learn a lot from other gardeners’ style of garden design while you’re all joining in. Projects for younger children • Easy grow flowers. Grow marigolds and sunflowers from seeds. They are easy to manage in most soils and provide colourful results to impress your little gardeners. • Painting pebbles. Decorate flower beds by lining them with pretty stones. Get your child to paint each pebble with a base colour then talk about ideas for patterns or pictures before

Sponsored by Heritage Landscape Centre letting them loose with child-friendly paints. When these are dry, paint over with varnish (the children can do this if you have child-safe varnish). Projects for older kids • Create a children’s corner. Let your child have a small section of your garden to build a little rockery (clear away grass, arrange some large rocks and plant small plants, eg primroses or sedum ‘purple emperor’). • Potted tomatoes. Fill a pot with fresh compost then sprinkle over a handful of tomato seeds. Add a little more compost then cover with cling film and secure with an elastic band. Leave by a window with light and warmth and keep the seeds watered. When the plants spout, put them into individual pots and keep them watered and fed. By early summer, when they are big enough, transfer to bigger pots in the garden. • Make a butterfly meadow. Butterflies like a variety of colours and nectar tastes but plant patches of the same flower rather than just one or two at a time. Try ‘wildflower’ or ‘meadow’ seed packs. Butterflies also like clover, buttercups and dandelions so don’t be afraid to let these flourish. Place large flat rocks around for butterflies to land on and a couple of shallow colourful dishes to catch water.

Fiona’s Word Fiona Dwyer, broadcast journalist, PR & media consultant, slave to 2 children and a husband.
Cling film and foil – how do you unravel it? Did you know that most of us have been using cling film and aluminium film all wrong? Does the foil or cling film just fall out of the box whenever you’re trying to unravel it making it really difficult to cut, especially cling film because it just sticks to everything? Well, it’s been revealed by a video that’s gone viral on YouTube that the majority of us haven’t discovered the little cardboard tabs hidden at the side of every box. And here’s the thing! If you push them in it holds the roll in place! Simple really – but I’ve never even noticed them! Have you?
What is going on with the weather? 38
The weather is playing havoc with my wardrobe! One day it’s sunny, the next it’s tipping it down with rain. Alternatively it
will be sunny first thing, then rain by 11 o’clock – or vice versa! I’m currently going with layers because at least I can add or take off as necessary – but I must say, I wish it would just make up its mind. It’s supposed to be summer now. If only it felt like it!
Have you seen it yet? Congratulations to The Deep which has recently seen its first ever baby penguin hatch – and, of course, to the chick’s parents - Nessie and Shackleton. I’m not sure whether it’s a boy or a girl but, if they’re looking for a name, my daughter suggests Marvin or Marvina! Not sure where that came from but either one is as good a name as any. Apparently Marvina sounds like a lovely brand of chocolate! We’re planning on a visit soon and we can’t wait to see it!
