Welcome to DNfourteen Dear Readers, Welcome to the July & August edition of your DNfourteen Magazine. At the time of writing I am still waiting for some real signs that summer has arrived and can only report that it is the last week in June and I am wearing a jumper and feeling rather cold!!! We look at advice on container gardening in this months gardening pages and I am sure that if the weather does pick up it will prove very useful to all us green fingered souls who are currently suffering with blue fingers and potential frostbite! Please take a look at our Health & Beauty feature for some great local advertisers and an interesting article on eating...hmmm chocolate (I get more like Homer Simpson every day!!). We have the annual advertisers of various summer shows and steam rallies in this months edition. The East Yorkshire Show & Family Fun Day was such a success last year that I shall be going along again with friends and family for a very enjoyable day. There is a stage with live music on all day ranging from solo singer songwriters to bands and even a vintage duo singing songs from the forties and fifties. Brantingham Park is only 12miles from Goole and is a fabulous, fun day out for all the family. Finally, don’t forget we love to hear from you so if you have something you would like to share with our readers, please get in touch. Kind regards

MPs Meet Chancellor to Discuss Local Economy
Local MPs Andrew Percy (right) and Martin Vickers (Cleethorpes) this week met with the Chancellor to discuss the local economy and their ambitious bid for £1 billion of flood defence funding. The MPs discussed the recent drop in unemployment locally and what more can be done to create more jobs.
4
Andrew Percy explains, ‘The Chancellor wanted to meet with us to discuss our vision for the Humber area over the next five years. We have already had a lot of investment into East Yorkshire and North Lincolnshire, but we welcomed the opportunity to discuss our future plans. We were also able to discuss the flood defence funding bid local MPs, the local Councils and the Humber LEP have produced for our area. This is presently being assessed by the Environment Agency and Treasury officials, with a response due in July. This is a very ambitious proposal and it is a lot of money we are seeking. However, we made clear that the funding not only protects local homes, but also safeguards our area for economic development and protects the port complexes. This is good for the whole of the United Kingdom’s economy. I was also able to update the Chancellor on the new link road in Goole, which has been made possible thanks to funding from the Conservative-led Government. When complete, thousands of jobs could come to our area.’ Andrew Percy MP 83 Pasture Road, Goole, East Riding of Yorkshire, DN14 6BP • Tel: 01405 767969 Email: brigg.goole@gmail.com To contact

HUNGER GAMES
7
ways your body tells you you’re hungry… even when you’re not.
12
1 TIME OF DAY We each have our own eating routine throughout the day. Whether you wake up and immediately eat a bowl of cereal or you wait to eat until after going to the gym, your body knows when to expect food. Hunger at certain times of the day becomes a conditioned response, not always out of hunger, but out of our body’s expectations.
salivating, the body’s natural preparation for incoming food, leads to actual eating.
2 SIGHT FOOD Seeing food you like, whether real, in pictures or in your mind, induces appetite and falsely triggers the body to anticipate eating. The false anticipation followed by
3 SMELL OF FOOD Who can resist the smell of the corner bakery or a whiff of the mall’s Cinnabon? Smelling food triggers the insulin secretion that makes us feel hungry.

Health, Beauty & Wellbeing 4 REFINED CARBS Meals heavy with refined carbohydrates, such as sugars and white flour and pastas, launch blood sugar levels only to bring them crashing down just a few hours after eating. This blood-sugar crash mimics the feeling of fasting, provoking you to eat to recover. 5 VARIETY If you suffer from the munchies or cravings for dessert on a full stomach, your diet may suffer from lack of variety. At each meal, our bodies crave diverse flavors and textures. If these cravings go unsatiated, our bodies want to eat until they are satisfied. To solve a chronic sweet tooth, add a fruit accompaniment to a savory dinner.
14
6 TEMPERATURE Ever wonder why restaurants keep their temps so cool? Restaurant managers and owners play on your body’s hunger and satiety signals. As you get hungry, your metabolism slows and your core temperature drops, signaling a need for calories. As you eat and restore your metabolic rate, your body warms. Body heat is a signal for satiety. If you body cannot warm – say, in a cold restaurant – the heat satiety signal never registers and you overeat.
this crunchy comfort food is surprisingly high in protein and fibre – the dynamic duo when it comes to satiety. A 100-calorie bag serves up 4 grams of filling fibre and 3 grams of satiating protein. Plus, the awkward shape of the kernels fills a lot of stomach room, maximising satiety. SWEET SATIATION To satisfy that sweet tooth after dinner, add a sweet and tangy accent to a savoury meal. Remember, your body seeks variety in taste and texture at every meal. A “chronic” sweet tooth can be quieted by adding apples, berries or orange slices to a dinner salad or a pilaf dish. or try a fruit salsa over pork or fish. These sweet – and healthy – accompaniments will help stave off dessert cravings.
7 ALCOHOL Drinking alcoholic beverages impairs judgment, which can easily lead to overeating, especially when drinking around food. However, alcohol itself does not stimulate appetite. BREAKFAST BLUNDERS Instead of spooning refined carbs and milk, pack protein and fibre into your breakfast routine. Try an egg (fried or scrambled) accompanied by a cup of low-fat yogurt with one half cup of low-fat granola and chopped fruit. This high-mileage breakfast will energise your morning and take you all the way to lunch before you start feeling hungry. SNACK SMARTS When you need a little something to tie you over, reach for a three-cup serving of low-fat popcorn. Salty or sweet, To contact

Check Out Our Brand New Look!
We have a brand new daytime line up here at 99.8 KCFM – and there’s nothing they lack in experience, brains and erm …beauty? They’re a very obliging bunch – we just asked them to line up against the wall and smile, and bingo! ‘The KCFM Breakfast Show with Matt Hutchinson’ starts the day – he’s the early riser of the bunch and is the one in the middle – we’ve airbrushed away the bags under his eyes. Sam Heywood’s on between 10am and 2pm - she’s the one that’s a girl. Then Rob Langley’s on KCFM Drive until 7pm – you can probably work out which one he is now. We decided to get right to the nitty gritty and find out what we should know about each one of them. “Tea and cake for me” says Matt. Literally wherever he goes he’ll either have a cuppa, a cake, or both. Trying to get him to walk past a branch of Greggs or Coopers is an absolute nightmare! Sam Heywood is a multi-tasker apparently (typical woman). “Even whilst chatting to you I’m preparing tea, hoovering, writing a novel and painting the outside of the house” she says. It must be a quiet day. Rob Langley is the gadget man, with a particular weakness for mobile phones. “It is true that I have more phones than ears to listen to them with – but I don’t care” says Rob. Despite being a sucker for the latest must have he’s still a nightmare to get hold of at the weekend, how does that work?
Admission: £2 Adults - £1 Children • FREE Parking (Sorry no Dogs Allowed except Hearing and Guide Dogs)
Please mention
There’s loads to listen to during Daytime on 99.8 KCFM that we can only give you the highlights. ‘The KCFM Breakfast Show with Matt Hutchinson’ is out and about visiting a different place in East Yorkshire every week on ‘Right Up Your Street’. Plus Matt’s always going to different schools (chatting up the dinner ladies to get pudding) and asking the children to describe items so that you can guess what they are in ‘Smalltalk’. Find out more by going to the Breakfast page on the website, www.kcfm.co.uk. Sam’s show starts with the mighty ‘Ten @ Ten’ – ten songs from one chosen year at 10am. She’ll help you work out which year by giving clues and playing news, sport, TV and movie clips. Rob Langley’s on Drive when you’re collecting the children from school or doing the run home from work in rush hour. He’ll give you the choice of two big songs on ‘The School Run is Fun’ – the one with the most votes gets played. It almost goes without saying that during the whole day you can expect the very latest travel and weather information, plus local news and sport updates so you know what’s happening across the whole of East Yorkshire – we’re good at that!

Our music is also pretty darn good (even if we do say so ourselves!) We play songs from the 60’s, 70’s, 80’s, 90’s, noughties and the very latest music too – but we only play the best songs from each decade, so you’ll like every single one. Plus, we play more music than anyone else – so you won’t hear the same songs again and again and again.

Growing plants in containers is a great way to bring life and colour into otherwise dull spots in your garden. Patios, balconies and window boxes are all places where plants can be easily introduced in containers. Plants in containers do require more care than those in gardens, but by following our advice you will find this easy. Plants for containers Almost any type of plant can be grown in a container. Generally, the bigger the pot and the plant, the easier it is to care for. Soft, fleshy, leafy plants such as tomatoes and fuchsias are more demanding than ‘leathery’ plants such as pelargoniums (tender geraniums) or lavender. Other plants to grow in containers include: Lilies, Roses, Trees, Fruit, Herbs and many many Vegetables. Planting Plant in early spring so that plants quickly put out roots and become established. lead to losses from waterlogging and evergreens may deteriorate over winter from dryness at the roots or wind-burn of the foliage. Watering Watering is one of the most important jobs when growing plants in containers. Not enough water will cause plants to dry out, and maybe die. On the other hand overwatering is very damaging, as most plants do not like sitting in water. Re-potting Plant roots eventually fill containers and this often

reduces growth. This is not necessarily a bad thing as slightly stressed plants are often attractive and the slower growth reduces the maintenance needed. However, eventually the plant will need to be moved to a bigger container or the compost refreshed in the same pot, as composts lose their structure over time. Shrubs and trees that stay in a pot for years are especially vulnerable unless re-potted. These steps will ensure success when re-potting into a larger container: l When moving plants to a larger container, (one size larger at each stage), re-pot in early spring as soon as they show signs of growth l Remove a little of the old compost, slide the plant out and tease out roots, cutting them if necessary. l When it is no longer convenient to repot them every year into a bigger pot, they should be repotted in the same pot at least every other year. Replace onethird of existing compost and roots with fresh compost. In years when re-potting is not carried out, topdress by removing 5cm (2in) old compost from the top of the
pot and replacing with fresh compost. Summer care Plants in containers need attention all year, but summer is the most critical period as plants can soon run short of water and nutrients. Watering l Check for moisture daily from April to September (twice daily in hot weather). l Water thoroughly, filling the container to the rim and allowing it to drain, then filling it a second time to ensure that the whole of the compost is adequately moistened. l If water is not draining out freely, check the drainage holes for blockage and assess compost structure. l Grouping pots for mutual shade will reduce heat stress on pots. l Mulching pots will help reduce heating and suppress weeds, but as most water is lost through plant leaves careful watering will still be needed. FIONA’S WORD
By Fiona Dwyer, broadcast journalist, PR & media consultant, slave to 2 children and a husband.
ARE YOU READY FOR THE SCHOOL HOLIDAYS? Yes it’s that time of year again! The time when we have to start organising what to do with the children for 6 weeks (or 7 as it is this year!) while we try to carry on working! The summer holidays will be here before you know it, so now is the time to start planning! I say it to myself every year – and while I manage to figure out most of the summer season, there are always a couple of weeks where last minute arrangements have to be made! We’re not all perfect!! So this year I am aiming for military precision! Regular readers will know all about my kitchen calendar (the one with columns for 38 everyone so I know who is doing what, where, which day and at what time!) so I plan to have every week marked off! We probably all try to take at least 2 weeks off during that time. That leaves 4 or 5 weeks to sort out. Holiday clubs? Activities? Childminders? Not to mention it can all get a tad expensive. On top of that, how guilty do you feel that you can’t take all summer off? And if your children are like mine, they like it best when we can do things as a family! I know some parents who already have everything sorted – I wish! If you are one of those, why not share some of your great ideas with us lesser mortals? Thanks in advance! Fiona x
