Andrew Percy Helping Families Locally

Solar - Biomass - Heat Pumps

The Government has already extended free childcare for 3 and 4 year olds, and to many two year olds. Here is what else we are doing, or will do, to help families locally:

4

l Introduce 30 hours free childcare for working parents with 3 and 4 year olds, worth £5,000 per year. l Introduce a new tax free childcare allowance to help with the costs of children up to 12., saving as much as £4,000. l Continue to invest in the free under 5’s Imagination Library Scheme we established locally to give pre-school children a better start. Improve your Brainpower It used to be thought that the brain was hardwired and that, unlike other organs, it could not repair itself or restore lost functions once damaged or diseased. Now we know that, in fact, the brain is neuroplastic – that activity and mental experience can be used to change the structure of the connections within it. These new principles are being used to radically improve, and even sometimes cure, some brain problems that were previously seen as irreversible – and some of them can also be used in everyday life to improve our brain’s health and performance. Learn a new dance, language or instrument As we get older, and particularly as we enter middle age, we are no longer taxing our brains as much as we did when we were at school. Most of middle age is the replaying of already-mastered skills, such as reading the paper and repeating familiar tasks at work.

exercise: doing something as difficult as learning a new language or a new dance, or how to play a new musical instrument. These activities engage a part of the brain called the nucleus basalis, which is responsible for helping us to pay attention and to consolidate new connections in the brain when we learn. Ideally, practise daily for an hour or so, with high-quality, focused concentration. Walk two miles a day Regular exercise, such as walking, has been shown to be a key factor in reducing the risk of dementia by 60%. One reason may be that when animals go on very long walks it is usually to seek out a new, unexplored territory in which to live – because they are fleeing a predator, or because food has run out where they live. The brain, in anticipation of the fact that the animal is going to have to learn a lot about this new territory, releases growth factors, which act like growth-promoting fertiliser in the brain, allowing it to build connections between cells more easily as it learns. Brutal exercise is not needed: the amount required to contribute to a lower risk of dementia is walking two miles, or cycling 10 miles, five days a week.

Simple Steps to Dramatically Improve Your Appearance

Sometimes we fall into a beauty routine. We become comfortable with the way we dress, style our hair and wear our make up. It becomes such a ritual that we stop looking at ways we can change our looks or freshen our appearance.

FOCUS ON

GOOLE 17

Focus on Goole

A Short History of Goole The word Goole is an Anglo-Saxon word meaning ‘open sewer’, or ‘outlet to a river’. Goole did not exist until the early 1800’s. Until then there were small farming villages nearby at Hook, Airmyn, Howden and a few houses where Old Goole is now situated. The history of Goole begins when a Dutch Engineer Vermuyden diverted the river Don by 10 miles to make it flow into the River Ouse rather than the River Aire. This was done at the request of the King who liked to go hunting on Hatfield Chase near Doncaster and was fed up with the land always flooding. This allowed the land around Goole to become more habitable.

18

In 1826, the Aire & Calder navigation company built a canal from Leeds to Goole. This was the start of Goole as we know it and a large town built up exporting coal from the West Riding of Yorkshire to the Continent. Various shipping lines set up in the town, each one having their own fleet of ships, ensigns and offices in the town. The railway came a few decades later with the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway using the port as its outlet to the North Sea and boom time came.

packet services to Hull and York. For a town of 10,000 people there were three cinemas, two theatres and a ridiculous number of pubs serving both the locals and visiting sailors. Various municipal parks were built and the town expanded to the surrounding countryside. Rail links were built to Selby, Hull and Doncaster. Shipyards were built across the river in Old Goole and at Hook. Goole landmarks such as the ‘Salt and Pepperpot’ water towers, the cranes, windmills, the Grammar School and chimneys Other Goole engineers invented radical ways to improve were built. Despite its prosperity, Goole was still quite the efficiency of the docks. The most famous of these isolated and surrounded by beautiful flat countryside. It were the coal hoists. These allowed small barges (Tom Puddings) carrying coal from the Yorkshire coalfields to be became known as ‘the Port in Green Fields’. lifted from the water and their contents loaded directly This was the ‘Heyday of the Railways’ in Goole. In the early into waiting ships. days, Goole did not want a railway as this would have At its peak Goole was a rival to Hull. There were passenger meant competition to the canal. However, to stop railway traffic going to Hull, the Company Directors decided not to ferry services to Europe and the world and local steam

oppose a railway to Goole, but to plan it so it helped the town. Railway freight always played an important part of the development of Goole. As well as the coal traffic, general goods were loaded onto ships and the L&YR took over the Goole Steam Shipping Company in 1905 to aid this growth. Up to 20 years ago most goods were loose and handled in the open air by a large number of men. Today everything is stored in containers or on pallets The original L&YR station was built alongside Railway Dock and had two 100ft platforms adjacent to St John’s Street. In 1881-82, the docks were expanded and the L&YR station closed down with all passenger trains using the NER station in Boothferry Road. They also built a large Goods Office across from Stanhope Dock. When the Selby to Goole Line opened, a spur was built between Rawcliffe Bridge Junction and Oakhill Junction for all passenger traffic. The line between Rawcliffe Bridge Junction and West Junction was always very busy with freight traffic to the docks. The branch lines led to a high-level coal drop and other parts of the docks. The town was bombed during the Zeppelin raids of World War I, (a mass grave for the victims when a theatre was hit still exists in the cemetery), but was only bombed once in Second World war by a lost plane trying to find Please mention

Leeds. Goole’s merchant sailors played a great role in keeping supply lines to Scandinavia open (Norway still provide the town’s Christmas tree every year), and sections of the Mulberry Harbour used in the D-Day landings were constructed in Goole and floated down to France. According to the 2011 UK census, Goole parish had a population of 19,518, an increase on the 2001 UK census figure of 17,600. The port is highly versatile and capable of handling nearly 3 million tonnes of cargo per annum, making it one of the most important ports on the east coast of England. Goole is twinned with Złotów in Poland. Goole was informally twinned with Gibraltar in the 1960s; at that time, Gibraltar Court was named in Goole and Goole Court was named in Gibraltar. Goole has a modestly sized town centre with many high street shops, independent retailers and public houses. The main shopping area is Wesley Square, off Boothferry Road (which has been pedestrianised around the main shopping area). There is a modern retail development in the town centre, a leisure centre next to the docks, and the Goole and District Hospital, to the north of the town.

There are Further Education colleges in Selby, Scunthorpe and Bishop Burton. At Goole College there is a program run for the older students at the High School(for the pupils in year 10 and above) to see what opportunities are held at the College. Goole’s industrial park, Capitol Park, has attracted two large employers: Guardian Industries, which built a glass manufacturing plant, and Tesco, which built a distribution centre. The arrival of these employers resulted in hundreds of new jobs being created. PET DENTAL CARE There are many reasons that can adversely affect your pet’s behaviour – but a common cause can be found by examining their mouth. Most cats and dogs live with a build up of plaque and tartar as they get older. This is not only potentially painful but it can also cause very bad breath. A vet can alleviate this problem by giving your pet a descale and polish (as you would have done at the hygienist) under anaesthetic, and the results can be remarkable, with your pet becoming more affectionate, playful and contented.

Keeping your pet’s mouth clean and healthy is crucial to his overall health and wellbeing as chronic gum infections may spread to major organs. Gum disease can cause heart disease, damage to the kidneys, liver, pancreas, joints or nervous system, behavioural changes and weight loss. These problems all arise from plaque and tartar. Plaque is initially soft and daily brushing is the most effective way of removing it. Left unattended plaque turns into hard, rough tartar which allows more plaque to accumulate. So when should you start dental care for your pet? The answer is the earlier the better, and your vet can show you how to do it. The following steps will help to ensure that your pet’s teeth and gums remain healthy: • Visit your vets for regular oral examinations and they will be able to recommend any necessary treatment. • Remove plaque from your pet’s teeth by brushing every day with one of the many specialist toothbrushes and dog and cat toothpastes available (never use a human product). As an alternative to brushing, there are now special daily diets available that provide the same dental benefits as brushing and actually clean teeth and freshen breath on every bite. • Check your pet’s dental health regularly – lift the lips and look for tartar, inflamed gums or damaged teeth. Also be aware of loss of appetite, bleeding gums, lethargy and, in cats, increased drooling. Remember, keeping your pet’s mouth in good shape is as important as a healthy diet and exercise.

Rose Care

Gardening

We are delighted to announce that The Heritage Landscape Garden Centre at Melton is now the largest stockist of David Austin Roses in the area. After fifty years of intensive breeding, David Austin’s English Roses combine the beautiful forms and wonderful fragrances of old roses with the wider colour range and repeat-flowering nature of modern roses. Their Rose Garden exhibit at the last Chelsea Flower Show was awarded a Gold. This takes their total to eighteen gold medals at this prestigious flower show. As a group, English Roses are healthy, reliable and very easy to grow. They quickly form magnificent, shapely shrubs, or many can be trained as short climbers. Choosing a Variety Your choice of rose is very personal. Make sure that the dimensions of the rose suit its position, although please bear in mind that the dimensions given are approximations. The actual sizes that each rose will reach will vary, depending on factors such as the soil type, fertility and moisture levels, the amount of sunlight and the way you prune your roses. Planting Position Select a site with at least a few hours of sun each day where the roots of the rose will not be in competition with the roots of other plants, especially trees and hedges. The exception to this rule are the ramblers which grow well near to trees. Planting Distances If you have the space English Roses, Old Roses and other Shrub Roses look superb planted in groups of three of one variety. They will then grow together to form one dense shrub, which will provide a more continuous display and make a more definite statement in the border. We suggest planting approximately 18 (45cm) apart within the group. Adjacent plants of neighbouring varieties Please mention

when responding to advertisers. Thank you.

31

Gardening should be planted approximately 2’ 6” to 3’ (75-100cm) away. For hedges for maximum effect, plant fairly close together 18” (45cm).

If immediate planting is impossible, keep the roses in the sealed bag or box in a cold but frost free place for no more than two weeks or heel the roses in. We recommend the use of Start when planting. Feeding All roses, especially the repeat flowering varieties, greatly appreciate the application of fertilizer. We use David Austin Rose Food here at the nursery and apply it to all the roses at the start of the growing season (March or April in the UK) and again in June to the repeat-flowering varieties. Many other fertilizers are suitable. Please follow the recommendations on the packet for the rate and frequency of application. Excessive nitrogen can make roses more susceptible to both pests and diseases.

Soil Type Roses will grow in a wide range of soils, but whatever type they do appreciate good soil preparation. The addition of a generous quantity of well rotted manure Mulching and Watering or garden compost before planting will help to ensure Roses particularly appreciate a moist and cool root run strong growth. which is easily attainable by generous mulching in spring and occasional deep waterings. This is particularly Planting On arrival, plant as soon as possible, never allowing the important in climates with hot, dry summers where the waterings should be frequent enough to keep the soil roots to dry out. Healthy Roses The best way to keep your plants free from pests and diseases is to grow them as well as possible, however, an occasional spray can be very beneficial. The most effective sprays are those at the start of the season before symptoms develop, but beware of frosts the night after spraying – they will scorch the leaves badly. Systhane is best for combating rust and blackspot. Uncle Tom’s Rose Tonic or SB Plant Invigorator, which are both foliar feeds, help control disease. SB Plant Invigorator is also effective against pests.

FIONA’S WORD

By Fiona Dwyer, broadcast journalist, PR & media consultant, slave to 2 children and a husband.

THE TROUBLE WITH SUPERMARKET RECEIPTS AND VOUCHERS

I think it’s great that supermarkets are making us all think about reusing our carrier bags in an effort to save the environment by either making us pay for them or encouraging us to buy lifelong bags. What I don’t understand is why they don’t think more about all the paper they use when handing over our receipts. It seems that it’s no longer enough to simply give us a receipt for the goods we have bought. Oh no. They now insist on giving 38 us four or more other bits of paper telling us about their latest offer for online shopping, how we can get double points on our loyalty cards when we next shop (as long as it’s within 2 weeks), money off coupons if we spend a certain amount of money on our next shop or some other advertising spiel! These offers tend to be linked to our loyalty cards, for which we provide an email address when we first sign up, so why don’t they just email us the offers rather than wasting all that paper? I don’t know about you but most of these bits of paper go into the bin or they end up living in my handbag for far too many months to admit, at which point I have a good clear out because I can’t find anything in it anymore! And, of course, none of the above offers can be used because they are all out-of-date! Fiona x
