Welcome to the April edition of the magazine.
We have an interesting and varied range of topics in this edition for your enjoyment ranging from Travel Ideas from Marion Owen, in the Hull City column we look at the recent fortunes of the team. We also have Advice for Dealing with Grief which is well worth a read as this is something that we all need to know about at one point or another in our lives. We have a great article about kitchens in the House & Home Section. We also have our usual round up of all the New Books to read this month. Roy Woodcock takes a close look at the new Citroen e-Berlingo in his Motoring Column. We have our regular column from Rob Walls & Janette Wilkinson who share their love of collectables and antiques with us. The Food & Drink section has two fantastics recipes for you to try at home - one for a mouth watering Mushroom Lasagne and the other for a Mediterranean Vegetables with Lamb dish - that I cooked last weekend for the family and it is delicious! (Thank you Erkan at the Olive Tree on Lincoln Way, Beverley for sending us the recipe). We also have our regular Wine Column with Roy Woodcock. We have lots of What’s On information to keep you entertained with some great Gigs happening in the area (I can personally recommend the Abba gig in Beverley Minster. BON VOYAGE! 116 years ago Canada beckoned for many men of “good health and of good character” as they left their Beverley homes for a prosperous new life. Photographs from the East Riding Archives’ collections show the hopeful, and perhaps in some cases, hesitant faces of many individuals about to embark on their Atlantic crossing in the April of 1906.

Why were they leaving? By the start of the 20th century, there were few employment opportunities and many people struggled to survive. All but one of Beverley’s grain mills, Crathorne’s, had gone out of business, and only two tanneries were still operating, Hodgson’s and Cussons’. Crosskill’s Ironworks, one of Beverley’s largest employers, closed in the 1870s resulting in the release of many skilled ironworkers.
Many of these men went on to work for the shipyard at Grovehill. Concerned by the lack of local work, in 1905 the Beverley and East Riding Emigration Committee was established to help send men to Canada. As part of this initiative, the men featured in these photos received financial assistance for the voyage and were given a copy of the New Testament and appropriate
Over a year later, the Beverley Recorder of August 31st 1907 reported “almost all who have gone to Canada from this district are prospering. How much is a new kitchen? This is one of the most frequently asked questions about kitchen design, and one of the hardest to answer, as so much is dependent on size and spec. At the very affordable end of the spectrum, a small IKEA kitchen installed by your builder can easily come in at under £10,000. My Favourite Furniture Purchase Rob Walls and Janette Wilkinson share their love of all things collectable... Rob
At first glance you would call my favourite furniture purchase a ‘Campaign Chest’, full of super cutlery. However, did it see action in India when the colonel sat down to dinner, or did it belong to an explorer in darkest Africa who made camp after a day’s game hunting? I think not. Although it was sold to me as a ‘Campaign Chest’, it is not one. Firstly, it has two bevelled glass doors and a protruding key. Also, the moulding on the top and bottom protrude. The carrying handles are not flush with the sides. These features would make it a difficult piece of furniture to travel with; it would have been damaged.
polished. The drawers are numbered and have two handles with a small plaque that tell you of the contents. All the drawers open and close easily and the key still works to lock everything up. In its day, it would have been a very expensive piece of furniture. I paid £400 for it around two and a half years ago. There were one or two knives and forks missing but I do look out for replacement items when I am out antique hunting. To date, I have found a set of six forks and a couple of knives that fit the trays. I don’t really use all the cutlery in it as I don’t often hold vast dinner parties. I do occasionally use them when having a proper Sunday Lunch. I have it in my lounge and I use it as a coffee table and a footrest. A piece of furniture should be used; it has become valued and cared for. My grandchildren like to look inside the cabinet just to see all the neat rows of knives, forks and spoons. It’s a far cry from McDonalds, plastic cutlery and school dinners. It’s from a bygone age and full of wonder

It could not be packed onto a mule train and trekked across the country. The piece is more likely to have come from a grand Victorian/ Edwardian house, where the butler set the table for dinner for special occasions. It’s all very grand. The chest of cutlery is a wonderful piece of furniture. It has five blue blazed lined drawers with compartments for all the contents. There are different types of knives, forks and spoons, with some fine dining equipment like grape scissors and asparagus tongs. It is made from oak and well-

My favourite furniture purchase is more vintage than antique. It’s my 1950s Larder Kitchen Cabinet/ Kitchenette. It’s totally genuine, painted yellow and white, with the original glass and drawers, it even has the plastic spice pots inside. It stands 6ft high, and when the work surface is out, it is 3ft wide. I have a small kitchen, but this was shouting ‘buy me’ when I saw it at a local auction. When I first bought it. I was going to restore it, but I have never got round to it. It is still in its original 1950s condition. I keep baking ingredients in the top cupboards and baking utensils, bowls etc in the bottom cupboards. When I do bake, I love having everything to hand – I just put on a pinny (apron), get my Be-Ro recipe book, pull down the work surface and bake.

When I redecorated my kitchen, I painted the walls a light shade of yellow to match the kitchenette. I have put up shelves to house my kitchen scale collection (all vintage) and have added various items to make it look like a kitchen from years gone by. This was all because of the kitchenette. I think it is the nostalgic element that I love so much. I am a child of the 1960s, and although I grew up before the age of fitted kitchens, we didn’t have a kitchenette. We did have a walk-in pantry! I do remember baking with my mum, and making bread with my dad during the early 1970s strikes when sliced loaves were hard to
get from the shops. If I ever have grandchildren, I imagine myself stood at the kitchenette and baking cakes with them. I am not alone with my love of the vintage kitchen. On a recent visit to Thirsk, I spoke to a charity shop assistant who was really excited as later that day she was taking delivery of a 1930s kitchen unit. This was to accompany her 1950s kitchenette in what can only be described as her very chic kitchen. My kitchenette cost £110 from the auction in Bridlington around 4 years ago. One just like it is for sale on eBay for £240. Not a bad investment, but it’s not for sale.
R and J Top Tips l Take your time and look at the piece of furniture from all angles. Ask yourself, ‘Will it fit in my room?’ l Consider the condition. Look for scratches, marks etc. Are they permanent or can they be polished out? l Does the piece of furniture have a use? It doesn’t have to be used for what it was original made for. I have an antique music cabinet that I keep paperwork in, and the bottom of a Welsh dresser I have transformed into a TV/Digital box/ DVD player cabinet. l If you love it, but it and consider the whys and wherefores afterwards.

LIVING LOSS AND GRIEF Complex feelings can arise when a loved one reaches advanced old age or has a terminal illness.Understanding anticipatory grief can help to navigate this difficult phase - we spoke to Anita Robins a grief counselling expert... Grief is a shape-shifter. One morning it might present itself as a smooth stone that rubs fondly against your heart, a reminder of wonderful memories. The next it could seem more like a jagged rock, its edges inflicting pain if allowed to get too close. Either way, there’s a widely held belief that grief is uniquely tied to the aftermath of a death. However, while the grieving process is triggered by bereavement, there is another stage that can be experienced ahead of this point – anticipatory grief. The experience of anticipatory grief can cause a person to feel stuck between the fear and the reality of the death of someone they love. It’s a stage that doesn’t have a clear status, where the pain of a bereavement is already being felt alongside other emotions, such as feelings of hope for a loved one’s survival or relief that for now they’re still alive. ‘We can experience guilt, joy, gratitude… there is a duality that happens,’ says Anita. While this definition of anticipatory grief is tied to an approaching death, Anita notes that it can also occur in the run-up to other lifechanging shifts. It might be felt before the end of a relationship, in advance of an expected change in financial stability or family roles, or before an approaching loss of purpose and identity. Anita says that in many societies, ‘we think of grief as [only being a response to] death, but so often it’s not. As humans, we have these futurefocused tendencies. We’re always looking to the next day, the next month, planning what’s ahead. We’re thinking about what life is going to be like after this loss, this divorce, this change’.

Express your emotions to loved ones. Although anticipatory grief can feel quite isolating, the act of sharing how you feel can help you realise that you’re not alone, and it can validate your experience. Some family members or friends might be able to relate to your emotions as they could be experiencing their own version of them. Design structure in your day. One of the most difficult aspects of grief is the knowledge that the world keeps moving when you feel like it has stopped. ‘This isn’t a simple process when going through a loss, but little things that we can start to implement into our day-to-day [life] can eventually become big things.’ Listen to your body and remain active. ‘Emotions are stored in the body and if you don’t find healthy ways to express yourself they will impact every other aspect of your life.’ Tuning in to the body will allow you to process grief in ways that you subconsciously need. Keeping physically active will help with regulating your emotions as they arise. Escape into nature. Exploring the natural world offers a therapeutic experience and a space for reflection and introspection. ‘Nature is a physical representation of change, life and death.Connecting with it facilitates wonder and curiosity because it’s new, it’s fresh, but then there is death and growth.’ Whether your escape is a retreat in another country or a walk around the block, reconnecting with nature can be a good way to process gradual loss. Speak to a professional. Visit your GP to discuss if counselling might be helpful. Anita says a therapist can provide stability, which is important. ‘My goal as a counsellor is to create a safe space. I want my clients to be able to explore the depth, duality and complexity of their loss and come up with tools to integrate it into the person that they are becoming.’ A mentalhealth practitioner will be able to explore the methods that best suit your needs, while also helping you to work through complex emotions.

Erkans’ Mediterranean Vegetables with Lamb
A quick and easy dish to prepare and cook makes this recipe an ideal evening meal after a busy day in the office. It is full of healthy vegetables and a great source of Vitamin C plus 3 of your 5-a-day.
Mushroom Lasagne
A great dish for sharing with friends this Easter, just add a big salad and some wine or beers to accompany it.
Serves 6 Prep 30 mins
Cook 1 hour
Ingredients 30g dried porcini mushrooms 500ml double cream 500ml vegetable stock 1 bay leaf 750g flat mushrooms, finely chopped 2 tbsp olive oil 2 tbsp chopped flat-leaf parsley 1 egg 10 large fresh lasagne sheets (or 15 small sheets) 25g butter, softened 150g parmesan (or vegetarian alternative), grated
Method 1 Pour boiling water over the porcini to just cover. Put the cream, stock and bay leaf in a large pan, bring to a simmer, then cook until reduced by half. Remove the porcini, leave to cool a little, then squeeze dry and finely chop.
Pour the porcini soaking liquid into the cream through a sieve, and cook until thickened to the consistency of double cream. Remove the bay. 2 Cook the flat mushrooms and porcini in the oil in a pan until browned. Stir in the parsley and set aside to cool. 3 Heat the oven to 200C/180C fan/ gas 6. Pour the porcini cream into a blender, whizz, add the egg and whizz again. Boil the pasta for 1-2 mins and drain really well. Brush a baking dish (about 20 x 30cm) with butter and add one layer of pasta, cutting the sheets if you need to. Ladle the porcini cream over, then sprinkle with parmesan. 4 Scatter with the mushroom mix, then add another pasta sheet. Continue layering pasta with cream, cheese and mushrooms, finishing with pasta topped with cream and cheese – you’ll need about 4-5 layers. Bake for 30 mins, or until bubbling and golden brown. PER SERVING 716 kcals, fat 61g, saturates 36g, carbs 21g, fibre 2g, protein 17g, salt 0.8g

Method 1 Heat the oil in a large, heavybased frying pan. Cook the lamb and shallots over a high heat for 2-3 mins until golden. Add the courgettes and stir-fry for 3-4 mins until beginning to soften. 2 Add the spices and toss well, then add the peppers and garlic. Reduce the heat and cook over a moderate heat for 4-5 mins. 3 Pour in the stock and stir to coat. Add the tomatoes, season, then cover with a lid and simmer for 15 mins, stirring occasionally until the veg is tender. Stir through the coriander to serve.

World of Wine Wines from Chile have suffered from the generalisation that the country produced “cheap wine” which went hand-in-hand with the belief this equated to poor quality. But like all generalisations it did a disservice to what was actually available. There has always been some good Chilean wine available to buy in this country, particularly red varieties, but it’s certainly true that Chile became first known for its cheap Cabernets and Merlots made from high yields in the fertile, warm, flat, flood-irrigated Central Valley. White wines, by comparison, left much to be desired up until the very late 1970s, largely as a result of using wooden vats, made from a native variety of beech, that left a taint in the wine. The gradual introduction of temperaturecontrolled stainless steel vats saw a dramatic rise in quality. Toby Morrhall, wine buyer with The Wine Society, based in the UK and the world’s oldest memberowned community of wine lovers, believes the future is bright for Chilean wines and is firmly behind the society’s campaign to highlight
Chilean wine, which was launched in March and runs into early April. “The future for Chile is very bright . . . Chile has incredible potential,” he told me. But added: “But it’s not for cheap wines. It’s for wines of £7 upwards.” Chilean wine has always rated highly with Toby. “As soon as I tasted the wines, I knew they were fantastic value for money,” he says. “I remember the first time I tasted Cono Sur Pinot Noir – I couldn’t believe how good it was. They’ve only really scratched the surface in Chile. The Syrahs are phenomenal, and I love Chilean Sauvignon Blanc.” The only constant in Chile is change, he says; its 3,000 mile-long gamut of soils and climates and incredible winemaking innovation producing an ever-diversifying and improving selection of wines. The warmer regions such as Colchagua, Maule and Itata are now producing excellent wines from Rhône varieties. And there are plantings of unirrigated Carignan and Cinsault dating from the 1950s producing lovely wines. Garnacha and Mourvèdre are more recent plantings but already looking very good, he says. “When it comes to white wines, 2021 is Chile’s best vintage for over a decade. It was a cool year and the wines achieved flavour ripeness at lower alcohols than normal, and

He picked out, as one of the hottest producers around, the Cristóbal Undurraga family, who sold the company that bears their name and bought an estate near Los Lingues, called Viña Koyle, in Alto Colchagua to make, principally, fine red wines (see best buys). They planted 50 hectares in 2006/7 (Cabernet Sauvignon, Carmenère, Syrah, Malbec, Petit Verdot, Mourvèdre, Tempranillo) and a further 30 ha in 2010 (Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Carignan, Grenache, Sangiovese and Petit Syrah) totalling 13 varieties. The vineyards are at the base of some hills at 400-550m altitude in quite a windy situation, particularly in summer, where the maximum average temperature in the hottest month is about 26C. Annual rainfall is between 500 and 700mm, and may allow some vineyard blocks to be “dry farmed” once the young vines have established deep roots. The soil is red clay over friable granite soils. Toby continued: “The vineyard faces north-west and is divided into three terraces. The bottom terrace has more clay and alluvial soils, while the middle and upper ones have decreasing proportions of clay and increasing amounts of stones and friable granite. The altitude gives a 2C difference in temperature.

One can sense great quality potential here.” * What’s in a name? When it comes to the central European native white grape Furmint, it seems we struggle to know what to make of it and, as a result, producers struggle to sell it through UK retailers. “We sell Furmint mostly in the on-trade, although in the UK, we do have it in Waitrose,” said Tatjana Puklavec from Slovenia’s Puklavec Family Wines. She said the problem was related to fact that the grape needed explaining before consumers would try it – something that’s possible in a restaurant setting, but rare in a retail environment. “When we present it to the end consumer, we sometimes hear them say, ‘we don’t want to taste something that tastes like fur or mint’,” she said. However, she added: “But then, when I let people try it, everyone loves it, especially in the UK, because of its fresh style.” She said that because of its “zingy” character, “Furmint is ideal for the Chablis drinker”. Residents urged to complete survey on fast food litter in the East Riding Residents in the East Riding are being encouraged to complete an online survey about fast food litter. The waste and recycling team at East Riding of Yorkshire Council is asking people to take part in the consultation to air their views on how the littering of packaging from fast food outlets affects the area. The team is looking to gather the opinions of residents, local businesses, visitors, and parish and town councils on the impact of this particular problem. Councillor Chris Matthews, the council’s portfolio holder for environment and climate change, said: “We would really appreciate residents helping us by filling out the survey. Litter is a major issue for every local authority. “At East Riding of Yorkshire Council, we spend around £3.9million per year cleaning up litter, and many residents feel strongly about this problem, with several volunteer litter picking groups active in areas including Bridlington, Beverley and Hessle.
“A major contributor to the amount of litter on our streets, our roadsides and in parks and play areas, is packaging waste dropped by customers using fast food outlets. “This is often waste which could otherwise be easily recycled if it was disposed of properly. “It’s often difficult to identify the people who dropped it, and can be very unsightly in communities where the outlets are based. “So we need people to help us try to get on top of the issue” The survey takes less than five minutes to complete and asks for views about the area you live, what your opinions are of litter and some suggested solutions to the problem. The New Citroen e-Berlingo Roy Woodcock gets switched-on to the new all-electric Berlingo range from Citroen . . .
Citroen has taken the bold step of making its van-based MPV range all-electric; ushering in 2022 it announced the only Berlingo passenger models available to order would be the ones that came with the “e” prefix. Brave or foolhardy, you might ask, for a vehicle that’s never going to be anything more than a niche choice? However, in an age when the price of petrol or diesel can increase twice in a single day, you can begin to see the thinking for such a heavy vehicle, when weight is one of the factors impacting on cost-per-mile calculations. It’s also expanded the line-up, now offering both the standard five-seater and bigger XL versions that seat seven in three rows. There are two trim levels on offer - Feel and Flair XTR; I was driving the e-Berlingo Feel XL, priced at £30,495 on the road after factoring in the £1,500 electric car grant. There are certainly plenty of plus points for anyone looking for a family-sized people carrier and the option of a seven-seat cabin is a rare one to find in a fully-electric vehicle at present (not forgetting something like a Tesla Model X can easily cost an eye-watering six-figure sum). It’s very large

inside with great access (the rear doors slide) and decent head, leg and knee room no matter where you sit. This IS a car you can feel comfortable in. And there’s loads of luggage space, too - even the regular five-seater has nearly 775 litres below the parcel shelf (1050 litres for the XL). That’s massive – more than, say, a VW Touran and, indeed, pricier large SUVs such as the Peugeot 5008 can offer. In this XL model, with the rearmost two seats completely removed, and you get 4000 litres of cargo room with the other rear seats down. To put that in context, there’ll be no need to hire a van when taking your kids to uni! The BUT (and there’s always a but, isn’t there?) comes down to the practicalities of everyday use. Mention electric cars and the question I’m always asked is about how far you can go in them and whether I worry about getting stranded. It’s a fair point, particularly in the East Riding, in my opinion, where we are still lagging behind in terms of the number of public charging points. Burt it is a fact that the travel distance attainable in electric vehicles is increasing all the time and clever on-board computer read-outs in some will factor in optional “top up” points en route. The quoted range of my seven-seat e-Berlingo was “up to 182 miles”; my experience (albeit based on only spending a week with the car) was the reality was a lot less - no more than 120 miles and, depending on how it was driven, that could drop even further. The e-Berlingo offers three driving modes - ECO, Normal and Power, but it’s hard work spending too long in “eco” mode as the car’s power output drops dramatically and you could soon notice it’s a tad cold as well, because the climate system is restricted to conserve power. Citroen recommends that you do most of your driving in the “normal” setting, while the top “power” setting isn’t really intended for sporty driving but for situations when you’re carrying heavy loads.

The top speed is a modest 84mph - I found I spent far more time that I normally would driving at 50mph on the open road to conserve the battery. Perhaps that’s an argument for increased road safety. The powertrain also has a “B” setting which increases the level of regenerative braking and “harvests” some power back into the battery. But it does feel as if you’re driving with the brake on! Both Feel and Flair trims feature two sliding side doors and Airbump exterior styling, an 8-inch touchscreen, Bluetooth, DAB radio, plus Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. All models come with a range of safety and driver assistance systems as part of Citroen’s Safety Pack. This includes Active Lane Keeping Assist, Active Safety Brake, Cruise Control and Speed Limiter, Speed Limit Recognition and Recommendation, and Driver Attention Alert. The Feel trim comes fitted with rear parking sensors, while Flair models also enjoy a 10-inch fully digital driver’s instrument display, remote temperature preconditioning, an Electrochrome rear view mirror, Citroen Connect
Nav, reversing camera, Intelligent Beam Headlights, opening tailgate window and dual zone climate control. The e-Berlingo supports up to 100kW rapid (DC) charging, with an 80 per cent re-charge taking less than 30 minutes, while a full charge from a 7.4 kW single-phase wallbox takes 7.5 hours thanks to the 7.4kW on-board charger. Customers with access to three-phase power can specify an optional 11kW onboard charger that will charge the e-Berlingo in 4 hours 45 minutes, when using a wallbox that also supports this faster home-charging solution. As usual with a compact zero emissions EV model, there’s a Benefit-in-Kind first year tax rate of just 1%. And exemption from London congestion and ultra-low emissions charges. The e-Berlingo does tick a lot of boxes. My favourite trick was to take advantage of the free charging points at Flemingate in Beverley (if you’re lucky and one of the three chargers is available) and pay just £1 for the parking. A different style of cruise...
As we get back to travelling we have many new ships set to sail the oceans & rivers of the world. Last month I had the opportunity to step on board the new Valiant Lady and it was a very fun experience. Adult only with very quirky features for its sailors. I have to say for theatre lovers they have the most amazing show on board. A modern take on Romeo & Juliette it was fabulous. Lots of acrobatics with very little vocal parts, absolutely stunning and I normally don’t rush to visit a theatre! Food is another matter so much choice, over 26 dining venues all orders are cooked to order no buffets. This is the first ship I have been on offering a dedicated Vegan & Vegitarian restaurant “Razzle Dazzle” there was a good selection on the menu but I opted for the Korean BBQ, which was great fun. Of course I enjoyed cakes from the patisserie along with gins from the gin bar and more. Drinks are not included but prices are fair and you can pay in advance of sailing by purchasing a bar tab. Music is a big thing with suites having turntables & vinyls as part of the furniture. On board there are many keep fit areas both indoor & outdoor. I did pass on the tattoo parlour. Who would it suit? Any adult wanting to have fun and feel young & lively. This week Silversea’s new ship Silver Dawn has been launched whilst APT whom we work closely with also launched two new River ships & there are many more new ships to follow. APT did have their ships ready for 2020 but ground to a halt with the pandemic. We had many new bookings last month for cruising. Next spring I have to say many sailings are waitlisted probably due to everyone shuffling from one year to another. Make a move now to ensure you get away. On the other hand summer 2022 there are many bargains to be had. You can book a cruise package cheaper than staying in a hotel! It seems everyone is ready to get back to living and travelling. Last week we had a wonderful time in sunny Ilfracombe whilst, Benidorm was rather chilly! Now we are faced with snow in the UK . At the moment it is all about getting away and having a change of scenery, there is always something to do regardless of the weather and it is just time to enjoy a new area of our world however close or far away from home. We are still dealing with a great deal of turbulence in the travel industry and things are taking time. I can tell you every time I turn my computer on there is some alteration stirring at me. Flights, Ferries & more. On the other hand we have great joy in discussing and booking wonderful adventures. This last month we have had bookings from the Arctic to Antarctica, adventures in Canada, the USA and also bookings for Asia. Work in progress One would like to think that Hull City are almost secure for another season in the Championship but you leave every home game, or rather home defeat checking if the bottom clubs are edging closer. Statistically City are twelve points clear of relegation with around six games to go but they are making such hard work of staying up, well unless you attend the away games that is. City have now lost six successive home games yet are undefeated in the last five away games. Survival is being assured from playing away from the MKM stadium and the points in the bag before Grant McCann was replaced. It also needs mentioning that the survival points tally could well be lower this season due to Reading and particularly Derby having points deductions. Both sides would be higher than City if for instance Derby had not had 21 points deducted back in the autumn. The current home form is the worse since the dark days of Terry Dolan
back in 1992, this is not something Acun Ilıcalı probably anticipated at the takeover. He even optimistically had play-off ambitions following victories over Bournemouth and Blackburn just as the takeover was completed. It will have become obvious to him that turning this ship around will not be as easy as anticipated and in the two games with the £2 promotions City lost 5-1 on aggregate. Dragging people back after five years or more will not be simple and the initial takeover buzz is waning. It will take serious rebuilding during the summer to attract more passholders and bigger crowds next year and that is the old chicken and egg situation. He probably hoped for higher gates to show there was the potential to spend big during the summer but although gates up by maybe three or four thousand

We’ll have to wait and see what happens in the muchanticipated close season transition. Changing like for like, albeit foreign unknowns or better players of known quality including some from the British leagues as well?
and City rarely look like breaking these sides down. There is a lack of goal threat and confidence at the MKM stadium. Will this change in the close season with a change of forwards and more midfield quality? Is it due to the abilities of the current players or the manager? We actually defeated two teams in the top three at the time of the takeover so the players do have potential even if they are very inconsistent.
The next issue is the manager Shota Arveladze. At the time of his appointment many felt City should have kept Grant McCann as the form from November, when forced to play with wing backs looked to be sufficient to ensure survival. Arveladze however was lined up for this role when the takeover rumours first appeared months earlier. He was the man for the future and the clubs long term plans. Already people are growing impatient and questioning if he is that man. We appear to have side that can contain the opposition away from home and generate opportunities on the counter attack. At home they do struggle to take the games to the opposition
One of the most positive stories out of this season is the appearance of both Keane Lewis-Potter (pictured above) and Harvey Cartwright in England teams. Lewis-Potter appeared for the England Under 21’s and Cartwright in the Under 20’s team in the same week and this is such a positive for the club’s Academy system to have two local born players in the same squads as Premier League professionals. There are lots of other players out on loan across he leagues as well and lets hope further local players join Keane Lewis-Potter, Jacob Greaves and Brandon Fleming in the first team. This would also save Acun some cash as we rebuild over the coming years.

April Gardening Jobs As we approach the middle of Spring, there’s plenty to do in the garden. Not only are the days getting longer, the soil is also beginning to warm up, which means there’s plenty to be getting on with in the potting shed. April is a good time to sow your favourite vegetable seeds indoors, or directly outdoors if it’s warm enough, ready for a summer of bumper harvests. And if you want to fill your beds, borders, and containers with scent and colour, keep sowing your favourite flower seeds too.
l Sow marrows, courgettes, pumpkins, squashes and tomatoes in a heated greenhouse or propagator. l If frost threatens, pull some fleece over your first early potato
l Sow herbs like dill, fennel, hyssop, parsley and thyme this month, undercover. l Thin seedlings in the vegetable patch, especially roots like carrot and beetroot. l If you have an established thyme plant, have a go at layering some creeping stems. Cover them with a fine layer of soil and once they’ve rooted, separate them and plant in pots or beds. l Sow sweet corn this month in modular trays undercover..

EASY WAYS TO SAVE MONEY We are all facing a huge rise in the cost of living – energy bills are soaring (my monthly bill has doubled), fuel prices at the pump have gone crazy, the weekly supermarket shop is rising all the times, interest rates are up, the list goes on. So how can we save money? Here are a few ideas that might help. Remember to switch off your lights and power sockets when they’re not in use – and don’t leave your devices on standby. Use cash back sites when you shop online. Remember that supermarkets start discounting food later on in the day if it’s going to be out-of-date the next day. Buy it and freeze it. Cook from scratch – it’s not only healthier, it’s much cheaper than buying processed food. If you’re a fast food lover, maybe it’s time to cut down on your takeaways. I’ve not taken the time to bake recently either, so that’s something that I need to put back on my agenda because home-baked treats are super yummy and cheaper than buying ready-made. And I must start planting some vegetables and herbs in the garden. What money-saving tips do you have? I’d love to hear them, so please let me know..
