Burstwick sculptor Gail E Hurst is worthy winner of Open Art at Beverley Art Gallery Open Art recently returned to Beverley Art Gallery, and has been pulling in the crowds to the venue in the Treasure House in Champney Road. One of the highlights of the exhibition is the winning entry by local sculptor Gail E. Hurst: ‘The Times after Degas’. Based at her home studio in a beautiful old stable in Burstwick, but originally from Hull, Gail worked in education for 22 years before taking the leap to become a full-time artist in 2017, something she had always wanted to do. She describes herself as a visual artist, working primarily in sculpture and paint. She first began sculpting five years ago, and her first pieces were on the theme of trawling, a profession with which she had very close connections, as many of her family members from Hull worked on fishing boats. The artist collects paper as a material for her sculptures, and strives for authenticity in all her work, even going as far as to have a family member once gut a paper fish for her! Her earliest pieces are on show in the Fishing Heritage

Centre on The Boulevard in Hull. Gail was awarded first prize in the Ferens Open last year with her paper sculpture of Michelangelo the Painter. Her winning piece in the Open Art exhibition was inspired by seeing ‘Little Dancer’, by French Impressionist Edgar Degas, in Paris around 25 years ago, an experience she found very moving, and which inspired her love of sculpture. She says: “Seeing the little street urchin portrayed in the piece resonated with my upbringing in two up, two down properties in Hull. I wanted to recreate the feeling of the look on her face in sculpture – one of dignified hope.”

She says : “ I wanted to capture her vulnerability and the fraying of her skirt. I used UV varnish protection to keep it all strong.”

“I like to create work which people can understand, and which resonates with them. House prices in Yorkshire forecast to fall by 8.5 per cent next year but a remarkable bounce back is predicted Analysts at Savills predict that average house prices in Yorkshire will fall by 8.5 per cent next year but between 2024 and 2027, there will be a remarkable bounce back as values climb by 22.1 per cent. This means the overall fiveyear growth in values from 2023 to 2027 will be 11.7 per cent, if the forecast proves correct. Yorkshire, the North West and the North East top Savills predicted five-year growth table with an 11.7 per cent increase, almost double the UK average. The West Midlands is next with 8.9 per cent followed by the South West with 6.2 per cent, the South East and East of England both with 3 per cent, leaving London bottom of the list with a 1.7 per cent decline in values by 2027. This is on the assumption that interest rates gradually ease back from the middle of 2024. Savills the expect mainstream housing markets furthest from London, where mortgage affordability is

least stretched, to be the strongest performers over their five year forecast period, with slightly less short term pressure on prices and more capacity for price growth during the recovery.’ “The housing market has remained remarkably strong through the first nine months of 2022, but demand dynamics changed over the autumn with the realisation that the Bank of England would need to go faster and further to tackle inflation,” says Ed Stoyle, head of residential sales at Savills in York. “A new prime minister and fiscal policy U-turns appear to have reduced some of the pressure on interest rates, but affordability will still come under real pressure as the effect of higher interest rates feeds into buyers’ budgets. That, coupled with the significant cost of living pressures, means we expect to see prices fall by as much as 8.5 per cent next year during a period of much reduced market activity. “There are several factors that will insulate the market from the risk of a bigger downturn as seen after the financial crisis. Borrowers who haven’t locked into five-year fixed rates had their affordability heavily stress-tested until August this year. This, combined with relatively modest unemployment expectations and signs that lenders are looking to work with existing borrowers to help them manage their household finances, should limit the amount of forced-sale stock hitting the market next year.

Get Your Business Noticed

“And looking longer term, the Bank of England’s relaxation of mortgage regulation over the summer has substantially enhanced the prospect of a price recovery but only as and when interest rates start to be reduced, once inflationary pressures in the wider economy ease.” Meanwhile, the prime housing markets, the top 5 per cent to 10 per cent by value in each region, are expected to see smaller price falls and a stronger recovery than

their mainstream counterparts, due to less reliance on mortgage debt. This will cushion them from the affordability concerns governing the mainstream markets. Savills expect the value gap between Yorkshire and wider commuter markets will leave greater capacity for growth and our region to be one of the strongest performing regions over the five years to 2027.

ADD THE WOW FACTOR TO YOUR BATHROOM

Bathrooms don’t have to be bland, white, clinical spaces. All too often the room we inherit from builders or previous owners is full of hard shiny surfaces and uninspiring tiles. But there’s no reason why a bathroom shouldn’t feel as warm and welcoming as every other room in the house. Even if you are not planning on a complete refurb yet, there are lot’s of ways you can add the wow factor to the bathroom and turn it into a space you are happy to be in. And one that even makes you smile every time you open the door.

Wallpaper and Accent Colours Wallpaper can be used in the bathroom. And it’s probably the quickest and easiest way to add colour and pattern. As long as the room is well ventilated and the paper has been hung well, there should be no cause for concern. You can always use a couple of coats of varnish if you are worried. This will seal the edges but – word of caution – it may change the colours of the wallpaper slightly. A more sensible solution would be to hang the wallpaper well away from any areas that may get splashed, such as the opposite wall to the bath, or on the top half of the wall with wooden panelling or tiles on the bottom half. A punchy accent colour is also a good option for bathrooms that are lacking colour. It’s also a good solution for using up half-used or leftover tins of paint.

Get Creative With Tiles I love a white metro tile, but they definitely have their place. Usually in a bathroom that already has features in abundance. But if you have a contemporary space that is just crying out for some personality, why not get creative with tiles? There are lots of different shapes available in the shops and some quite bold colours too. If everything else is plain, they will add much needed colour and interest. I particularly like the way the tiles above are left at the top to mimic waves. Very apt. Continued on page 10

House & Home Add Luxurious Details Decorative details will also make the difference between meh and fab! Treat the bathroom to some luxury with a decorative chandelier, a plush rug, plants, candles and things that just make you smile.

Go Down the Traditional Route If your tastes run more to the traditional style of bathroom, you can’t go wrong with wooden panelling in place of shiny tiles. It’s a look that will never go out of style and will always look classy. As do twin sinks. Probably something to put on the back-burner until you go down the whole refurbishment route, but definitly bathroom-goals for most of us. Don’t forget to add matching mirrors, wall lights and a patterned rug for a homely touch.

Try a Paint Effect A waterfall-effect ombré wall in a cascading ocean palette is the perfect way to create a feature wall in the bathroom. Start painting from the bottom with your lightest colour of chalk paint first. Apply the middle shade above your first colour, then use a clean brush to lightly feather the paint while it’s still wet, blending each colour into the next. Finish with your darkest colour at the top of the wall and repeat the blending process. Then seal the entire wall with wax. Go Wild With Colour Who says a bathroom has to be white? As you would when decorating any other room in the house, start with a moodboard of ideas. You will be amazed how effective and satisfying combining colours and surfaces can be. Be adventurous with patterns, colours and even porcelain shades. If the rest of your home is a riot of colour, why shouldn’t the bathroom be the same?

Choosing the right flooring options for your home Flooring may not be the most glamorous aspect of the home, but your decisions can have a big impact on your overall design! Having the freedom to tailor your options means that you can shape your home to meet your lifestyle needs – and your design taste too of course! There are numerous possibilities available when selecting new flooring. We asked The Market Weighton Carpet Company for their expert advice on which flooring is right for you...

home) And guess what else… its quieter to walk on! So if you have early-starts or late nights you won’t deprive the rest of the house of a good night’s kip!

Laminate Flooring

Since its emergence in British homes during the 1980s, laminate has remained an extremely popular choice of flooring, and it’s not hard to see why! Its enduring popularity is understandable for several reasons, not least because of its affordability. Unlike real wood, laminate is much kinder to your budget, but crucially it doesn’t compromise on having a gorgeous aesthetic quality. A nice look and feel is certainly something that laminate delivers on as designs can be incredibly realistic, making it a very attractive rustic flooring option and certainly one to wow your guests with.

We recommend laminate flooring if you’re seeking something versatile and easy to clean, that compliments traditional décor, yet is versatile to changing designs.

Vinyl Flooring

A flooring stalwart, vinyl continues to be one of the most popular flooring options for homes and tends to be a cheaper alternative to wood or tiles.

One of vinyl’s key selling points is that it has a durability that alternatives simply do not. Generally, if maintained correctly, you can expect to enjoy between a decade and 20 years of use before a replacement is needed, saving you money on long term flooring costs. Not to mention, vinyl can be a handy accessory if you have little ones running round, as it’s hardwearing, waterproof and a very easy surface to clean, meaning spillages or dropped food won’t cause you too many problems! We recommend vinyl flooring for those who have children, want a cheaper option that doesn’t compromise on quality, and for those who are either undecided on their home style, or on the flip side of the coin, have a very clear vision in mind – as there are so many options you can choose from!

Luxury Vinyl Flooring

Luxury vinyl tile (LVT) is the more sophisticated version and, as the name suggests, it comes with a few more features than its standard equivalent! While standard vinyl’s lifespan is impressive, luxury’s durability is even better. If you choose it for your new home, you can expect it to last you for between 25 and 30 years, meaning it is arguably more economical. Its sturdiness is also complemented by the fact that it tends to be a warmer flooring solution, allowing you far greater comfort and less of an Arctic-like surface to walk on. Luxury vinyl can additionally boast being entirely waterproof, so it won’t fall foul of any surfacelevel water or underfloor moisture, making it easy to maintain (especially with kids and pets in the

November 2022

Get Your Business Noticed

We recommend luxury vinyl flooring for those with a little more budget to spend on personalisation for the home, who are looking for a premium feel in their home but one that also can be considered as warmer and more comfortable to walk on than tiling or laminate. This is a must for homes with children and furry friends. Due to its versatility, LVT can complement any number of home décor styles.

Tiled Flooring

Tiled flooring has enjoyed a resurgence over recent years and its renaissance is entirely understandable given their durability, eco-friendliness, and air quality contribution. Plus, tiling can be very resilient in the face of stains and wear and tear, so you don’t have to worry too much about upkeep. We recommend tiled flooring for the modern, versatile homeowner and for those who have ‘style’ at the very top of their priority list. When it comes to your specific ideas, we have plenty of finishes available so you can bring your vision to life.

Carpet Flooring

Finally, carpet is a staple when it comes to most home personalisation, with many opting for this warm and comforting choice for their living rooms and bedrooms. Carpet is no doubt a welcoming feature of any home, and it remains to be popular amongst many of our purchasers and belong. However, it’s well known that carpet is much harder to clean than vinyl or laminate, for example, so when choosing your flooring options at home – make sure you’re ready for the commitment of keeping the dirt at bay! We recommend carpet for those who lead with comfort in mind, you can pick your preferred pile and colours at the personalisation stage of your customer journey. We think at least one room in every house needs the luxury and warmth that carpet affords!

8 New Reads Whether you’re looking for ways to pass the time at home or you find yourself in need of a new read for your holiday, there are plenty of recent and forthcoming autobiographies to get stuck into. From emotionally charged memoirs to tell-all diaries, make some space on your bedside table for these top releases..... A Visible Man by Edward Enninful A Visible Man traces an astonishing journey into one of the world’s most exclusive industries. Edward Enninful candidly shares how as a Black, gay, workingclass refugee, he found in fashion not only a home, but the freedom to share with people the world as he saw it. When Enninful became first Black editor-in-chief of British Vogue, few at the heights of the elitist world of fashion wanted to confront how it failed to represent the world we live in. But Enninful, a champion of inclusion throughout his life, rapidly changed that. Now, whether it’s putting first responders, octogenarians or civil rights activists on the cover of Vogue, or championing designers and photographers of colour, Enninful has cemented his status as one of the world’s most important change-makers. This is the story of a visionary who changed not only an industry, but how we understand beauty. I Fear My Pain Interests You by Stephanie LaCava Margot is the child of renowned musicians and the product of a particularly punky upbringing. Burnt out from the burden of expectation and the bad end of her worst relationship yet, she leaves New York and heads to the Pacific Northwest. She’s seeking to escape both the eyes of the world and

the echoing voice of that last bad man. But a chance encounter with a dubious doctor in a graveyard, and the discovery of a dozen old film reels, opens the door to a study of both the peculiarities of her body and the absurdities of her famous family. American author Stephanie LaCava’s new novel is a sexy and moving exploration of culture and connections, bodies and breakdowns – and a must for anyone who loves film. My Policeman by Bethan Roberts A tragic tale of thwarted love set in 1950s Brighton, the story centres on Marion, who meets policeman Tom. Over a summer, he teaches her to swim in the shadow of the pier and Marion is smitten – determined her love will be enough for them both. A few years later at the Brighton Museum, Patrick meets Tom. Patrick is besotted with this new man, who opens his eyes to a glamorous, sophisticated new world. Tom belongs to both Marion and Patrick, but in this age, it is safer for him to marry Marion. The two lovers agree to share him – until one of them breaks and all three lives are destroyed. Our Missing Hearts by Celeste Ng From the number-one bestselling author of Little Fires Everywhere, this is a deep, heart-wrenching novel about the unbreakable love between a mother and child in a society consumed by fear. Twelveyear-old Bird Gardner lives a quiet existence with his loving but broken father, a talented linguist now relegated to shelving books in a library. For a decade, their lives have been governed by laws written to preserve ‘American culture’ in the wake of years of economic instability and violence. To keep the peace and restore prosperity, the authorities are now allowed to relocate children of dissidents, especially those of Asian origin, and libraries have been forced to remove books seen as unpatriotic – including the work of Bird’s mother, a ChineseAmerican poet who left the family when he was nine. Bird has grown

the astonishing work of postwar artists in Latin America and the women defining art in the 2020s. From the Cornish coast to Manhattan, Nigeria to Japan, this is the story of art for our times – one with women at its heart, brought together for the first time.

The Marriage Portrait by Maggie O’Farrell Maggie O’Farrell brings the world of Renaissance Italy to life in her newest book. It’s Florence in the 1560s. Third daughter Lucrezia is free to wander her palazzo at will, wondering at its treasures. But when her older sister dies on the eve of marriage to Alfonso d’Este, heir to the Duke of Ferrara, Modena and Reggio, Lucrezia is thrust into the limelight. Alfonso is quick to request her hand in marriage, and her father to accept on her behalf. Having barely left girlhood, Lucrezia must now make her way in a troubled court where her arrival is not universally welcomed. Perhaps most mystifying of all is her husband himself. Is he the playful sophisticate he appears before their wedding or the ruthless politician even his formidable sisters seem to fear? As Lucrezia sits in uncomfortable finery for the painting to preserve her image for centuries to come, one thing becomes worryingly clear. In the court’s eyes, she has one duty: to provide the heir who will shore up the future of the Ferrarese dynasty. For all her rank and nobility, her future hangs in the balance.

Undoctored: The Story of a Medic Who Ran Out of Patients by Adam Kay The author of the bestselling This is Going to Hurt reflects on what happened after he left the NHS frontline in this sardonic and laughout-loud follow-up. This Is Going to Hurt was the publishing phenomenon of the century, read by millions and adapted into a major TV series starring Ben Wishaw. But it was only part of the story. By turns funny and tragic, Undoctored is about what happens when a doctor hangs up his scrubs, but medicine refuses to let go of him. It’s about an extraordinary medical school education; hospital admissions and personal ones; and being both a doctor and a patient.

The Story of Art Without Men by Katy Hessel How many women artists do you know? Who makes art history? Did women even work as artists before the 20th century? And what is the Baroque? In this fascinating book by the creator of @TheGreatWomenArtists, Sofonisba Anguissola of the Renaissance, the radical work of Harriet Powers in the 19thcentury US and the artist who really invented the Readymade are given the spotlight. The book explores the Dutch Golden Age,

The Citroen C5 X

Citroen has added the X factor to its C5 range and the result is a truly luxurious big car. Roy Woodcock reports . . .

I’d almost given up on cars having a stand-out personality all of their own; if there is such a thing as an I-Spy book for cars any more (the sort you might hand in desperation to your kids to prevent the “are we nearly there yet? questions on a long holiday journey) then you’d have to admit confusion of what they’d actually seen would have you questioning your own sanity.

but also the way New C5 X combines the most advanced comfort features with the latest technologies to deliver unrivalled comfort and serenity.”

I guess I’m sort of saying that with so many cars now having a generic look you might have a hard job to pick one out in an identity parade. Then along comes the Citroen C5 X.

It’s a true five-seater with space to really stretch out. And the feeling of luxury and comfort is immediately obvious when you get in the car, thanks to Citroen’s “Advanced Comfort” seats that feel more like armchairs.

It doesn’t quite rival the days when Renault unveiled the likes of Avantime and Val Satis in the early years of the new Millennium, but for me, it evokes that sort of spirit.

Having had the car on test for a week I can certainly testify that it had everyone searching for their I-Spy books - no one had seen one before and its stretched-limo looks drew countless admiring glances. So, let’s flesh out the story a bit . . . With a starting price of well below £30,000, the C5 X is a roomy, interesting and – most importantly – comfortable family car regardless of how you choose to categorise it. Thanks to a wheelbase stretching to 2,785mm, there’s an enormous amount of space in the back of the car (both for passengers and luggage).

Is it a Crossover, a luxury large hatchback or a big estate; perhaps a bit of all three? What this car certainly is is big and luxurious; something you might want to do the Grand Tour in. Officially launched at the end of July, Eurig Druce, managing director of Citroen UK, told us: “New C5 X represents a long-anticipated return to the prestigious D-segment for Citroen, and we’re proud to offer customers a completely unique model. There’s nothing like New C5 X on the market today, not only in terms of its looks and dimensions,

New C5 X is available in “Sense Plus”, “Shine” and “Shine Plus trim from launch with petrol and Hybrid powertrains, and prices starting from only £26,490 on the road for the lead-in Sense Plus petrol model. The entry-level trim features a wealth of equipment as standard, including 19-inch alloy wheels and LED headlights. Inside, there’s part leather-effect covered seats, whilst infotainment comes in the form of a 10-inch central touchscreen that incorporates Connected 3D Navigation, wireless smartphone mirroring functionality and a Hi-Fi speaker system. To aid parking, “Sense Plus” models also feature front and rear parking sensors, and a reversing camera.

On “Shine” models the multifunction steering wheel is heated, while the door handles, front foot wells and driver instrument panel all feature subtle LED lighting. Significantly, the 10-inch central touchscreen is upgraded to a 12inch unit, while drivers also benefit from an extended heads-up display and wireless smartphone charging. Radar Controlled Active Safety Brake is also standard, helping improve safety still further. Range-topping “Shine Plus” versions, like my test car, then add extra tinted quarter-panel windows at the rear. Inside, there’s leather seats and both the driver and front passenger seats are

electrically operated and heated, while comfort is further improved via acoustically-insulated front and rear windows, along with a tinted gloss appearance. A motorised tailgate enhances convenience, while safety is assured via extended blind spot detection and a 360-degree reversing camera. From launch, customers have a choice of PureTech petrol or ultra-efficient plug-in Hybrid models. Petrol-powered variants are available with either a 1.2-litre PureTech 130, or the more powerful 1.6-litre PureTech 180 engine. All models sold exclusively with a smooth eight-speed automatic gearbox. Hybrid models combine the PureTech 180 petrol engine with an 81.2kW electric motor and a

12.4kWh Lithium-ion battery pack, for a combined power output of 225hp and 360Nm of torque. Capable of up to 34 miles in fullelectric mode, New C5 X Hybrid models emit just 30g/km of CO2 – making them eligible for an 11 per cent Benefit-in-Kind taxation rate. The flagship model, as tested here, is the 225hp plug-in hybrid. Fully charged, it accelerates briskly and effortlessly with noticeably low levels of engine noise – 0-62mph comes up in 7.9 seconds and the maximum speed is 145mph. Comfort levels are amazing, thanks to the hydraulic active suspension system. In short, if you want a big family car to stand out from the crowd, then the C5 X is for you. Roy Woodcock’s

that will win you over with its spicy power.

World of Wines I’m going to apply a little rocket science to the column this month . . . if only to come up with a few suggestions for what you might be drinking come Bonfire Night celebrations. Mulled wine will be the choice for many and I certainly won’t refuse a glass that might be coming my way; just remember, if you are making this most traditional of winter warmers make sure you warm it gently rather than boil it, or all the alcohol will evaporate. I’m sure I’ve given a recipe for mulled wine before and most are variations on a theme; but here’s another you could try: Bottle of red wine (Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinotage or Carménère would work well), 60g/2oz demerara sugar, 1 cinnamon stick, grated nutmeg, an orange halved, dried bay leaf and 60ml/2fl oz sloe or damson gin or port (optional), Put the wine in a saucepan with the orange, sugar, bay leaf and the spices. Heat gently until the sugar has dissolved. Taste to see if you want the wine sweeter, and add more sugar to taste. Take off

the heat and stir in the added alcohol if you are using it. Strain into heatproof glasses and serve at once. Once the fire gets going and the rockets are lighting up the night sky, then what better to wash down the burgers, hot dogs, pulled pork sandwiches or chilli con carne than a ripe, full bodied and satisfying red wine? You’re looking for something with a touch of spice or smokiness and my first port of call would be a bottle of Shiraz or Syrah (it’s the same grape, just labelled differently depending on country of origin). Often described as the classic barbecue wine, choose a bottle of this and the chance of getting a smoky dimension to your wine is very high indeed. And if you like this wine you should also investigate the lesser-known Carménère, from Chile, which exhibits wonderful peppery spiciness, deep dark flavours and a chocolatey richness.

South African Pinotage is always a good bet; classic examples are full-bodied with lots of oakiness, while Grenache (Garnacha in Spain), a leading grape variety of Chateuneuf-du-Pape, is another

Best Buys for November

It’s definitely worth ready the labels closely when choosing wines for occasions such as this - essentially you are looking for wines that have been matured in oak barrels, picking up cinnamon and clove flavours along the way. But it’s not just red wines that can deliver a hint of smoke on November 5. The classic French white Pouilly Fumé, made from 100 per cent Sauvignon Blanc grapes, is the obvious one - Fumé means “smoked” in French and good examples have a pungent smell often likened to gunflint. This is a wine you’ll only get from the Loire Valley in France and it’s characteristic smokiness is to do with the terroir - the grapes being grown in a flinty soil called silex. It’s a wine I absolutely adore. * I promised in last month’s column to bring you news of how House of Townend, and its Cellar Door outlet at Melton, had fared in this year’s Decanter Magazine Retailer Awards, having been shortlisted in four categories. And I’m delighted to say they were named Best Regional Wine Shop for North-East England. It was also named as runner-up for Burgundy Specialist of the Year and finalist for Bordeaux Specialist of the Year and Midsize Online Retailer of the Year. The judging panel commented: “House of Townend near Hull impressed with its wide range (1,836 wines), new Enomatic dispenser systems and commitment to developing the retail side of the business” while in terms of the Burgundy category they said: “House of Townend offers an excellent Burgundy range featuring many mature vintages.”

Nationally, Lancashire-based Booths (although they do have outlets in North and West Yorkshire) was named Wine Supermarket of the Year with Waitrose as runnersup. Majestic Wine was named as National Wine Retailer of the Year with The Wine Society as Large Online Wine Retailer of the Year. * The Co-op has unveiled its autumn wine range, with 12 new wines joining the range in October, including the retailer’s first “super premium” Fairtrade wine. Moldovan wines will also be available in Co-op stores for the first time across more than 1,000 stores in a major roll out. Exclusive to Co-op, the new Finca Notables Malbec Fairtrade (£22) will be the most premium Fairtrade wine ever sold by a UK retailer. Produced by El Esteco in the Argentinean Calchaquí Valley, only a limited numbers of bottles are made for this single-vineyard wine using specific barracks from the winery’s most noble estates. The wine spends 15 months of ageing in barrique. The winery supports two Fairtrade projects for the communities involved with the wine’s production. The new Moldovan red and white wine will also go exclusively into up to 1,866 Co-op stores. Tilting Tree Sauvignon Blanc (75cl, £6) and Tilting Tree Merlot (75cl, £6) are produced by producer, Asconi in the Puhoi region. The duo is expected to drive more awareness of the quality and value for money that can be found from countries like Moldova with its approachable wine price points and familiar grapes. Until next month - take care.

El Picador Cabernet Sauvignon

Where: Co-op When: Now Why: A silver medal winner at last year’s International Wine Challenge. From the Languedoc, this is a well-made, perky white that is simply a great expression of the Marsanne grape. Think of ripe peach, pear and subtle, tropical fruit flavours with a lovely, creamy texture and good weight. It’s a bit different. If you like Viognier, you will like this.

Where: The Cellar Door, Melton When: Now, while stocks last Why: Excellent Chilean red. Blackcurrant fruit leads to a full, ripe flavour and juicy tannins. Soft and easy at first, there is definite complexity and a nice sense of power.

Recipe

Ahmeds Slow Cooker Chicken Curry

Mohammed Ahmed owner of the Bengal Brasserie shares an easy chicken curry recipe that you can adjust to your own heat preference. Frying the onion and spices initially helps create a deeper flavour. Hands-on time 15min. Cooking time about 8hr 15min. Serves 4

l 200ml coconut milk l 1tsp caster sugar

Ingredients l 1tbsp sunflower or vegetable oil

l 650g chicken thigh fillets l Large handful coriander, roughly chopped

l 1 onion, finely chopped l 3 garlic cloves, crushed

Method

l 1tsp ground cumin l 1tsp ground coriander l 11/2tbsp garam masala l 1-3tsp hot paprika, to taste l 2tbsp tomato purée l 3cm piece fresh root ginger, peeled and finely grated l 400g tin chopped tomatoes

1 Heat the oil in a medium pan over low-medium heat and cook the onion for 8-10min, until softened. Stir in the garlic, ground cumin and coriander, the garam masala and 1tsp paprika and cook for 1min, until aromatic. 2 Add the tomato purée and cook for 1min, then stir in the ginger, tomatoes, coconut milk, sugar and some seasoning. Transfer to a slow cooker. 3 Trim and discard excess fat and sinew from the chicken. Cut into roughly 5cm pieces. Add to slow cooker; stir to coat. Cover with lid; cook on low for 6-8hr, until chicken is cooked through. 4 Check seasoning, adding more paprika to taste. Stir in 1/2 the coriander; divide between 4 bowls. Garnish with remaining coriander and serve with rice and mango chutney, if you like.

PER SERVING 418cals, 31g protein, 27g fat (12g saturates), 11g carbs (9g total sugars), 2g fibre

NO SLOW COOKER? NO PROBLEM! Add the prepared chicken to the pan at the end of step 2. Simmer on the hob for 15-20min, or until the chicken is cooked through. Complete the recipe.

Travel

Australia…

is a vast country so when should you visit? The answer is year round but it depends where in Australia you want to travel. Above the red line travel in our summer, below the red line year round but it will be warmer in our winter. Most visitors from the UK travel to Australia & New Zealand to escape our winter, especially if they are combining a holiday whilst catching up with relatives. You cannot see it all in one holiday and you need as much time as possible to enjoy your stay. This month we will feature Western Australia, the biggest state in the country and the closest to the UK. Perth is the only destination offering a direct non stop flight from the UK. It takes just under 17 hours, leaving Heathrow at midday arriving the following day just before midday. Perfectly timed to ensure you arrived refreshed with little jet lag. Over the years we have had clients just take their holiday in this area there is a lot to see and do in Perth. A great way is via the open top hoppa bus 24 or 48 hour passes are available. Going a little further, just 19 km off the coast lies Rottnest Island visit by ferry then explore by bike. It is a island of paradise car free with crystal clear waters. You are close to nature. The friendly quokkas cannot be seen anywhere else in the world and they love to pose for a photo. A trip down Swan valley renowned for its wineries and is a food and wine haven just 20 minutes outside of the city! Head down to Busselton 2 hours south of Perth and you can experience the worlds largest marine observatory which has just opened this year. This is great for those who do not like to get into the water but want to get up close to marine life. If you plan to visit between April & October this is the perfect time for a road trip north along the Coral Coast Highway between Perth to Exmouth. There are special deals on one way car rental at this time of the year. Work on spending 9 to 10 days for this drive to enjoy the experience. Beauty Box

Day Creams For Every Skin Type This Winter Everyone needs a reliable day cream in their beauty routine but at this time of year, it’s worth switching lighter summer formulations for something richer – mainly because colder temperatures and central heating can zap moisture from your skin, leaving it feeling dry and tight. Here are nine of my favourites for every budget and skin type… Beauty Pie Youthbomb Collagen Peptide Cream, £151 Best For: A Healthy Glow I was excited about this new launch from Beauty Pie and it doesn’t disappoint. Full of peptides, niacinamide and fruit extracts, it exfoliates, soothes irritation and pumps skin full of moisture. The gel texture is seriously satisfying to apply and leaves behind a dewy glow that lasts. Think of it as heavy duty, without being suffocating – in fact you’ll find it absorbs fast and makes a difference almost immediately. CeraVe Facial Moisturising Lotion SPF25, £15 Best For: Anyone On A Budget If you’re after an affordable cream that gets the job done, choose CeraVe. Suitable for all skin types – but especially those prone to dryness – it’s incredibly lightweight, delivering moisture and SPF protection simultaneously. It absorbs quickly into the skin, and contains three essential ceramides and hyaluronic acid to protect the skin’s delicate barrier. Unlike some

November 2022

SPF-based creams, this one is noncomedogenic, so it won’t clog your pores up either. Elemis Pro-Collagen Marine Cream SPF30, £89 Best For: Reliable Results Elemis’ Pro-Collagen cream is a cult classic. Earning consistently rave reviews, it contains ingredients like padina pavonica and chlorella to flood skin with hydration and lock in antioxidants, vitamins and zinc for better elasticity, smoothness and glow. Used regularly, it will help your complexion feel firmer and, while no product can reverse the ageing process altogether, it certainly plumps skin and refines uneven texture. It’s more expensive than some on this list, but you get what you pay for. Fresh Rose Deep Hydration Face Cream, From £18 Best For: Instant Hydration Those in need of instant relief should try Fresh’s iconic Rose Cream. Full of rose extract, nourishing oils and hydrating squalane, it gives you supplelooking skin almost immediately, smoothing out dry patches and rough patches. The texture feels amazing too – think a gel/cream consistency that gives your complexion a healthy luminosity that’s never greasy. A little goes a long way: you’ll only need a small amount each time. I love how well it layers with other products, plus it acts as a great primer for any make-up that follows. Olay Complete 3-In-1 Day Cream, £14 Best For: Sensitive Skin Types You can always rely on Olay for

formulas that live up to the hype. This three-in-one day cream has won several awards for its ability to rebalance sensitive skin. Not only does it offer UVA and UVB protection, it’s also loaded with vitamins B3, E and B5 to keep redness and inflammation at bay. Even after just a few days’ use, you’ll see dry patches start to clear up. Never irritating or occlusive, it’s perfect for anyone who suffers with that tight, itchy feeling during the colder months. Plus, at just £7, you can’t go wrong. Origins Age-Defense Moisturiser With White Tea, £29.60 Best For: Anti-Ageing Benefits This was created with anti-ageing in mind, using ingredients like silver tip white tea that’s proven to fight off damage from pollution and UV throughout the day. Oil free, it’s a great option for those prone to breakouts, and there’s no synthetic fragrance, which can sometimes cause irritation. Silky in texture, it absorbs fast and leaves skin feeling healthy, plump and radiant. It’s thick – so make sure you apply just a little at a time. Soho Skin Face Cream, £60 Best For: Impressive Ingredients Soho Skin’s new range is seriously impressive. Using some of the best – and most effective – ingredients, its products work hard to offer several benefits in one. We love this Face Cream, which is full of niacinamide and squalane to hydrate and minimise redness, and natural

carotenoids which protect the skin from UV and pollution. The best bit? Other actives work to boost your skin’s cell turnover for a firmer, smoother and fresher-looking complexion. It feels good too, with the thin consistency still providing a hefty dose of hydration. Cruelty free and vegan, it’s another great option for anyone with sensitivities. Sunday Riley Ceramide Moisturising Ice Cream, £60 Best For: Severe Dryness If you like your creams thick and buttery, you’ll love this one from Sunday Riley. It will last you for months on end and give skin an enviable babysoft feel. Added ceramides soak up dry, itchy patches, while vitamin F strengthens the outer layer for visible suppleness. Despite its indulgent feel, it’s never greasy or heavy, while the almond scent is so comforting. You’ll love the dewy sheen it leaves behind. Avène Hydrance Light-UV Hydrating Emulsion SPF30 Moisturiser, £14.51 Best For: Layering With Other Products This moisturiser never leaves a film on your skin post-application – despite containing a hefty dose of SPF30. It sinks in fast with zero white residue left behind, so you can get to work layering other products on top. Thanks to hyaluronic acid and Avène’s cult thermal spring water, it seals moisture into the skin and keeps it there to drip-feed it with continuous moisture. Perfect for the winter months, it’s a must-try if your skin often feels dehydrated, tight and inflamed. I just wish it came in a bigger tube...

Men are You Looking After Your Gut

It’s simple: if you want to improve your health, start taking care of your gut. With more and more research suggesting the gut is the foundation of overall wellbeing, we asked local Dietitian, Sophie May what we should be doing…

these. Stress speeds up digestion and changes the pH in your bowel, making it a less favourable environment for your good bacteria (also known as probiotics). Over a prolonged period, stress can lead to gut bacteria that are primed for inflammation. Working on stress management is key.”

Bloating, flatulence, diarrhoea and constipation are relatively common complaints that could be improved with the help of diet and lifestyle changes. Some of the lesser-known signs that could be ameliorated by gut support include lethargy, skin complaints, brain fog, food intolerances, frequent coughs and colds, hayfever symptoms and headaches.” Patience Is Key “Remember, Rome wasn’t built in a day, and the same goes for your gut. Early studies have shown that making changes to the diet can change the microbiome in as little as four to seven days. However, given there are 100 trillion bacteria in the gut, consistency is key for long-term results. By adopting a balanced diet and exercising, resting and reducing stress, you will impact your gut within a week. Within 28 days, the effects will be significant, with the most marked improvements seen at the threemonth mark.” Top Tips For Getting Your Gut Bacteria In Better Shape… Start With A Probiotic: “There are dozens of different strains of probiotics, but some – such as saccharomyces boulardii – can help heal the gut. This species has been shown to be effective in eradicating potential pathogenic and unhelpful microbes. If you’re having problems with your gut health, start with this.”

Eat The Rainbow: “Aim to eat 30 different plant foods each week – including fruits, vegetables, nuts, pulses, legumes, fresh herbs and spices. Eating at least 30 plant foods each week has been shown to have a positive effect on the gut microbiome. Adding brightly coloured fruits and vegetables to your diet will increase your intake of antioxidants, which have been shown to be beneficial for the gut.” Reduce Processed Foods: “Added sugars, trans fats, emulsifiers, additives and preservatives, along with lower-quality ingredients can have a negative impact on the gut. Cut back where you can.” Try Unfamiliar Foods: “A happy gut is all about diversity. Try choosing one new fruit or veg each week that you don’t usually eat. Unfamiliar grains, pulses and rice are also great – microwavable grains are a good place to start.” Learn To Manage Stress: “There’s a direct link between your brain and your gut. Being stressed can profoundly affect gut health. Find what works for you – it could be walking, swimming, reading, guided meditation or yoga.” Incorporate Fermented Foods: “Kimchi, sauerkraut, tempeh, tofu, live yoghurt and miso are all rich in probiotics. Fermented foods provide the gut with beneficial bacteria known to improve digestion and nutrient absorption.” Load Up On Polyphenols: “Polyphenols are organic compounds found primarily in plants that have been linked to better gut health. They are known for their antioxidant and antiinflammatory properties. Herbs and spices, dark chocolate, berries, flaxseeds, olive oil, wholegrains and coffee are all great sources.” Stick To A Routine: “Timing meals and snacks effectively will support regular digestion. Heartburn, indigestion, constipation and bloating are signs your eating pattern is out of kilter. Stick to regular mealtimes and prioritise good-quality protein and fats early in the day. Eating heavy meals later in the day can be taxing on the gut.”

Hull City - by Woody Mellor

A New Start

Hull City have began the Liam Rosenior era with a nil-nil draw at Millwall. This is hardly earth shattering news but in the context of this season a clean sheet at The Den with ten players for the half the game is a massive improvement. So far this season our squad of assembled multi-national players have been barely organised and they have conceded almost two goals every match with the inevitable cock-up in most games. Maybe, just maybe they will actual be better organised from now on, they don’t leave players unmarked and the midfield do far more to stop opponents running through as will. Let’s hope.

grafters and things did improve with victories at Blackpool and Rotherham but City were once again caught short against better sides like Blackburn and Boro. More quality is required against the better opponents yet the ones showing glimpses of quality on the ball are not necessarily the ones also stopping their opponents for ninety minutes. With better coaching, tactics and man management we hope that Rosenior and his new coaching team can incorporate the flair players and grafters or bring more commitment from these International players. Improving the defence has to be the first priority over next week and then there is a month’s break due to the World Cup to really work on tactics, develop relationships with the players and get some players fit for January. By the new year City will also be able to re-enter the transfer market for some new defenders or ball winning mid fielders. By the new year Tetteh and Allahyar will be fit once again and they have been big losses since August and City will finally be able to see Traore and Arsenal

Liam Rosenior was appointed this week after month long period of finding someone who can take the club forward better than Shota Arveladze. Pedro Martins appeared to be the man and the search seemed to go for ages after this deal fell through and Andy Dawson was given an extended period as caretaker manager. Andy changed things around and replaced some of the big name signings with

November 2022

Get Your Business Noticed

wonderboy loanee Sallah who was injured before his transfer was completed. One or two associated problems with all of this is finance and squad numbers. City have around 35 players and they can only register a squad of 25. There are already players unable to play such as James Scott and Andy Cannon whilst three of the injured players were also missed out of the squad. So to bring new players in the club need to free up several places so some of the players brought in may need to move on, maybe the two Chelsea players are sent back as they haven’t featured at all or they just restructure the squad better. There are an abundance of attacking midfielders but a lack of defensive midfielders or experienced central defenders. They are lacking options at centre forward as well though the Ghanian and Iranian forwards will be fit by January. City seemed to have a fantasy football shopping list in the summer but not all the pieces are fitting into the jigsaw this far. Maybe Rosenior is the magician who can combine a range of British graft and International quality. City are apparently close to the fugure they are allowed to spend on signings for Financial Fair Play regulations so they may have to do some January dealings to swap and change as well as reduce he squad size. Liam Rosenior has been offered this opportunity after impressing in his coaching roles at Brighton and Derby. Curtis Davies has just suggested that he was the brains at Derby rather than Wayne Rooney and but for the twenty point deduction their cobbled together side would probably have finished at least mid table. They also defeated or went toe to toe with promotion challengers last year. They also out fought and out thought City twice last season despite only finally putting together a team of free transfers the day before we played them

at the MKM stadium last August. Curtis Davies re-signed for them and after being linked with him for the past two summers it would be really great if he could be tempted here in January. We need players of this experience to help develop or restore confidence to the likes of Jacob Greaves after the calamitous start of the season within City’s defence. Rosenior is very highly regarded and as up and coming coach. We will have to see if he can succeed here as he is very excited to manage the club were he played a decade ago and within the FA Cup Final. He also played as a right back alongside left back Andy Dawson during this period so it is great to see them together as coaches at City. Phil Parkinson came here as top quality coach but lasted only a few months. We really hope that Liam Rosenior can get to grips with the range of talents and personalities within this squad and turn Acun’s dream around. Relegation was never a consideration for this season especially after the millions spent of transfers and wages but steadying the ship has to be the first priority and see if the players at his disposal can become a winning team following the World Cup.

Another outing for Beverley’s ‘Smallest Cinema’ Earlier this year, Beverley Guildhall introduced their new ‘Memory Museum’, which quickly earned the title of ‘The Smallest Cinema in the East Riding’! In the second of the ‘Smallest Cinema’ series, there is another opportunity to see ‘Around the Town’, which was created by the Yorkshire Film Archive for the Beverley on Film exhibition in 2016. Fiona Jenkinson, curator of the Beverley Guildhall said: “The Beverley on Film exhibition was extremely popular, and we are very pleased to have been able to negotiate repeat showings of some of the films.

The film is about an hour long, and will be shown continuously while the building is open; admission is always free and there’s no need to book. If visitors enjoy being able to see this film again, we hope to be able to show another of the Yorkshire Film Archive films in the future.” Around the Town will open at Beverley Guildhall on 2 November, 2022, and will run until 24 February, 2023. The Guildhall is located in Register Square, off Cross Street, and is open from 10am to 4pm every Friday and 10am to 1pm every Wednesday, with free admission.

The first of these will be Around the Town, which uses video from events such as the 800th anniversary of Beverley as a Charter Borough in 1929 and the 400th charter anniversary in 1973, as well as general videos of the town in the 1950s, 60s and 70s.

Explore the inner workings of Skidby Mill

Skidby Windmill will soon be offering a glimpse into one of the usually unseen areas of the building, with a series of special openings. The stone floor at the mill is one of the key parts of the structure, where massive sets of stones were used to grind grain into flour when the mill was operating. Volunteers will be offering the opportunity for small numbers of visitors to go up to the stone floor and hear more about the workings of the mill. The stone floor openings will take place on Saturday 3 December 2022, and Saturday, 7 January, 2023. Morning sessions will run from 10.00am-12.30pm and afternoon sessions from 1.00pm3.00pm on each of these dates.

“Because of the limited size of the space, groups are limited to four people at a time and we advise all visitors to wear appropriate footwear, such as boots or trainers, as the visit will involve climbing a steep ladder. I’d like to thank members of the Skidby Mill / Hessle Mill volunteer team who have generously given their time to make these visits possible.”

The rest of the mill will be open as normal on each of these Saturdays and normal admission charges to the site will apply. For further details please visit: www.eastridingmuseums.co.uk/ Said Dr. David Marchant, museums registrar with the council: “As the mill is currently not working, whilst we await the return of the sails, we wanted to offer visitors a little extra ‘behind the scenes’. So we are trialling some Saturday openings of the stone floor over the winter period initially.

Treasure! Hidden Hoards and Fabulous Finds Treasure! Hidden Hoards and Fabulous Finds is a new exhibition at The Treasure House in Beverley that runs until 4 February, 2023. There are thousands of treasured items in the Treasure House but some objects are quite literally…. treasure. The exhibition showcases objects that are defined as treasure under the Treasure Act 1996 and explores this fascinating aspect of archaeology. The exhibition is a chance to discover Viking gold rings, a pendant with Roman mosaic and an Anglo-Saxon gold pommel (part of a sword handle). There is also some more unusual treasure, such as a pile of 13th century silver coins found near Huggate that have been

fused together, and bits of Bronze Age metalworking waste found near Bishop Burton. Under the Treasure Act 1996, even off-cuts of metal can sometimes be classed as treasure. For more information, visit https:// www.eastridingmuseums.co.uk/

FIONA’S FOOD FOR THOUGHT

By Fiona Dwyer - Journalist, PR Consultant, DIY Your Biz PR Course Creator, Wife & Mum to two teenagers! HOW TO COPE WITH S.A.D. Now that the clocks have gone back, the days are getting shorter and there’s more dark than light. It’s definitely the time of year when I want to get my pyjamas on as early as possible, settle down in front of the fire with my wearable blanket, watching All Creatures Great and Small or Strictly or catching up with my latest book. I can’t be on my own in this, surely?!! But it’s also a time of year when many people suffer Seasonable Affective Disorder, or S.A.D. In fact, did you know that it affects around two million people in the UK? Symptoms like fatigue, anxiety and feeling low. You may be isolating yourself from family and friends, struggling with concentration and not sleeping properly. A lack of exposure to sunlight is thought to exacerbate it – that’s why it gets worse in autumn and winter - but there are ways to help. Experts suggest getting yourself as much sunlight as you can during the day (maybe a lunchtime walk) or consider a light therapy lamp. Check your Vitamin D levels and keep up a regular exercise regime. However, they say if you are experiencing symptoms for two weeks or more, you should get advice from your GP for advice and potential treatment. So, however you are feeling, know that you’re not on your own. Wishing you all good health during the winter months.

CELEBRATING WOMEN OF ACHIEVEMENT Having been cancelled due to the Covid pandemic in 2020, I am delighted to say that one of the region’s most prestigious awards ceremonies is back and taking place this month! Organised by Women in Business Hull, the fantastic Women of Achievements Awards is being held on 11th November at the Mercure Hotel in Willerby – and I am honoured to be compèring the event again this year. It’s always such an inspirational afternoon. As well as hearing the stories of women who are achieving so much in their lives and careers, I am really looking forward to meeting our guest speaker, one of Britain’s most recognisable TV and radio personalities, Gloria Hunniford OBE. She’s going to be talking to us about her incredible life and fabulous career. Good luck to all the finalists! It’s a sell-out event and it’s going to be absolutely fabulous!

CHRISTMAS IS COMING! The countdown is on and it’s time to get prepared. This year, with the cost of living constantly on the rise, it’s more important than ever to get organised in advance so there’s no huge pressure to spend all in one month. And remember, it’s not just about presents. It’s about spending quality time with your family and friends. At Christmas, we are celebrating the birth of Jesus who was born in a stable, no finery surrounding Him. But no matter your faith, we can all look at how we can help those less fortunate than ourselves, as everyone is so good at doing in our wonderful region. Age UK in Hull has its shoebox appeal for older people who may be isolated or lonely at Christmas – and there will be many more similar projects. They often need handing in by early December, so it’s worth keeping an eye out now to see if you can help. That’s it for now. Have a brilliant November everyone.
