Launch of online poll to vote for Sea of Hull artwork Participants and the public can now vote for their preferred artwork from Spencer Tunick’s Sea of Hull installation online at https://www.snapsurveys.com/wh/s. asp?k=149338616033

There are 15 different images to choose from, either via the online voting system or on display at Ferens Art Gallery as part of the Skin exhibition which opened on Saturday 22 April.

Councillor Terry Geraghty, Portfolio Holder for Culture and Leisure and Chair of Hull Culture & Leisure, said: “The digital platform offers everyone, including participants who took part from all over the world, the opportunity to vote for their favourite piece of work from that special event last July.”

On 21 April Friends of the Ferens, on behalf of Ferens Art Gallery, launched a crowdfunding campaign to raise money to purchase a further piece of artwork to join the gallery’s permanent collection.

In total £16,000 is needed to purchase a further image for the city to keep forever and so far an impressive 15 per cent has been achieved and £2290 raised, with contributions from participants and visitors to the gallery, since the campaign launched.

Three of the unique Sea of Hull photographs have now joined the gallery’s permanent collection as part of the original commission and the Ferens has been offered the opportunity to add a fourth as a reminder of that unique day in Hull on 9 July 2016 which made worldwide headlines.

Councillor Terry Geraghty, continued: “We would love to add a further iconic image of Hull to the Ferens growing permanent collection and this is a great opportunity for the

public to get involved. The support has been really encouraging and we are so grateful to everyone who has contributed so far.”

Frances Kelly, Chair of Friends of the Ferens, said: “The Spencer Tunick Sea of Hull was an opportunity for thousands of people to be part of works of art, showing our part of the world. In seeing the pictures we feel involved and many people who didn’t participate knew someone who did! The Friends of the Ferens are fully supporting the Ferens in its crowd fund campaign and very much hope that a fourth picture can be purchased to celebrate such a unique and special event.”

You can donate to the crowdfund by visiting: https://www.justgiving.com/ crowdfunding/Ferens-Hull and have until 8 August. Alternatively the gallery accepts contributions however big or small in the special donation box within the SKIN exhibition.

The SKIN exhibition is now on display at the Ferens Art Gallery until Sunday 13 August 2017. Entry is free and open: Monday – Saturday, 10am – 5pm and Sunday, 11am – 4.30pm. It is also open until 7.30pm every Thursday.

House & Home

The garden. Our favourite room in the house Make your garden another room in your house and you’ll use it so much more. This season, we’ve been talking a lot about reverse living: taking the indoors out, and bringing the outdoors in. There’s a common thread in that thinking; it all centres on our love for the great outdoors. Our minds feel more alive when we’re connected with nature and our souls feel soothed when we’ve had a good daily dose of fresh air. So make the absolute most of the summer months and start thinking about your outdoor space as another room, turning it into the very best one in the entire house.

Our garden essentials
 1. The garden sofa
For us, the sofa has usurped the dining table as being the number one necessity to have in the garden. Eating alfresco is engrained in our minds. We come pre-wired so that when the sun shines, we yearn to eat on our patios. But lounging outdoors isn’t quite the same. It has to be almost balmy for us to walk away from our living rooms. A garden sofa stops this. A garden sofa beckons you outdoors with a good book, a cup of tea, or simply just to sit and be.

3. The soft touches
Outdoor cushions are an absolute must, and we’re not just talking seat pads. Weatherproof scatter cushions make a garden feel loved. It’s little things like that which help to push a garden from being a space to becoming a room. Blankets do the same. And by rolling them up and nestling them into nearby baskets not only do they look sweet, but they’re easy to scoop up and take to a shed or conservatory when summer showers arrive. 4. Resilience
The best gardens are the ones that are low maintenance. So seek out furniture that’s robust in every sense of the word. The great British summer is a temperamental thing and designs that can stand up to wind, rain and shine are designs to be celebrated.

2. The coffee table
A bit like the sofa, an outdoor coffee table teaches us to treat our gardens as an extra living space. It’s also another excuse to have a second sofa area if you have the room, one on the grass and one tucked away slightly on the terrace with a comfortable combination of sofas and armchairs.

Would you buy an eco car? Have you ever been tempted by an electric or hybrid car? With dwindling natural resources and growing concerns about the environment, many motorists are turning to eco cars. Most modern cars rely on fossil fuels for power, which are created from finite supplies of crude oil. Spills of crude oil are extremely damaging for the natural environment, and burning fossil fuels has been proven to emit greenhouse gases, contributing to global warming effects. It’s no wonder that car manufacturers and drivers alike are setting their sights on eco cars for the future. Electric Cars Although we might think of them as such, electric cars are not a new invention. They were popular with motor vehicle drivers in the late 19th and early 20th century, until gasoline powered cars become cheaper and overtook them. Now, however, they are making a comeback. Electric cars use an electric motor for power, and draw energy from rechargeable battery packs.

Advantages of hybrid cars • As with electric cars, they are quieter and cheaper to run than conventional vehicles • Although they use petrol, they are more fuel efficient so consume less fuel than conventional cars • They produce less air pollution • The internal combustion engine is light and economical • They help make drivers more efficient • The engine automatically turns off at a stop, but the car can restart quickly, so they are great at lights and traffic jams Disadvantages of hybrid cars: • Repairs can be complex and costly than on electric or conventional cars • They are more expensive to buy than conventional cars • They can be less powerful and slower than conventional cars, because the internal combustion engine is smaller So would you be tempted to drive an eco car?

Advantages of electric cars: • Recharging your battery is much cheaper than buying petrol • They don’t produce exhaust fumes or noxious fumes • They are quieter than conventional cars • They reduce greenhouse gas emissions and decrease the need for fossil fuels • You can charge your car at home • Electric cars need less maintenance than conventional cars • The reduce the dependency on foreign oil from unpredictable or developing countries • Energy is normally drawn from utility companies, which could be from renewable sources too • They have good acceleration performance Disadvantages of electric car: • The price of electric cars is still higher than for conventional cars • Replacement batteries are expensive, although they last many years • It can take many hours for battery packs to be recharged • The travel distance that electric car batteries achieve is less than petrol powered engines achieve. However, this is normally upwards of 100 miles per charge, and is being improved, with many electric cars now able to achieve hundreds of miles on a charge Some people see hybrid cars as a good bridge between electric cars and conventional cars. Hybrid Cars Hybrid cars are powered with both an electric motor and an internal combustion engine. There are various types of hybrid cars but they normally use petrol or diesel to power the engine, and batteries to power the electric motor. They share many of the same advantages as electric cars, with the extra boost of power that an international combustion engine provides.

Courage Queen

Dear Courage Queen Dear Rachael, Since having our baby a year ago my relationship with my partner has rapidly gone down hill. We seem to be arguing more than ‘normal’ and we get irritable with each other on a daily basis. My partner has started to spend more time at work, away from us both, which makes me feel resentful. This then makes me feel guilty. Yours tired and confused

Rachael Replies Dear Courageous one Having a child is a big responsibility and on some level we can feel an enormous amount of pressure to get it ‘right’ and make everything ‘perfect’ for our child. Of course there is no such thing, however this can make us put too much pressure on ourselves. Since the new arrival you are juggling three people’s needs: yours, your partner’s and your child’s. You each have different needs which need managing. Meeting childrens’ needs take time and energy So here are my suggestions for getting your relationship back on track. 1) Work out what is actually frustrating YOU – What is causing the arguments? Write down how you are feeling and why it is hacking you off. 2) Next, work out how you would prefer the situation to be. What would the preferred scenario be? If this situation were resolved to your satisfaction what would have happened? 3) Identify what your child’s needs are, from having to have a stock of nappies to making sure he or she gets enough social interaction with others. 4) Ask your partner to go through the same exercise – what is frustrating him/her? What would his/her preferred scenario be? What would he like to be different in the current situation? 5) Plan a date with your partner when you can have some uninterrupted time to discuss all of your thoughts. The next part

maybe the challenging part - you both need to sit down and really HEAR what the other person is saying. It is not a competition of who feels the most ‘persecuted’. It is a strategy meeting for you all to be happier. Your aim is to work out how all of your needs are going to be met. The art of compromise is important. Many parents with a new baby push the irritations under the carper and pretend that everything is ok. Of course nothing gets sorted this way. Having a child can be like having an old eccentric deaf incontinent great uncle coming to stay – frustrating, tiring and needs managing! The couples who stay happy are the ones who are honest enough to admit things need to be better and work together to improve the situation. So grab a pen and a piece of paper and take charge of starting the process of getting YOU and your relationship back on track.

Hull wins top property award Hull has claimed a major accolade at this year’s Yorkshire Property Awards. The Game Changer Award, sponsored by Barclays, looks at projects that have had a material effect on the surrounding environment and local market, and it is where Hull’s title as UK City of Culture 2017 captured the attention of judges. Although not even halfway through the tenure, the effects of being City of Culture are already being felt across the city by residents and businesses alike. The city has seen a surge in visitors since January with footfall in the city centre up, museum and gallery year-on-year visitor figures smashed and businesses reporting a boom in trade. Leader of Hull City Council, Councillor Stephen Brady said: “As a city we have all worked hard in preparation for our year as UK City of Culture 2017, and to receive this award reaffirms what we all know – Hull is rising high and challenging past perceptions. “The council has invested over £100m into the transformation of the city with a stunning and inviting new city centre, revamped venues and brand new concepts like Hull Venue. “We believe in the future of the city and will continue to shout it from the rooftops.” Martin Green, Director Hull 2017, said: “The response to Hull being UK City of Culture has been incredibly positive and we have been delighted by the public and the media reaction to the cultural programme.

“Our opening event Made in Hull attracted 342,000 visits, surpassing all our expectations, and the anecdotal indicators are looking good. “As well as delivering a successful programme, we hope this important year for the city will help ensure Hull’s attractiveness as a place to live, work, study and invest in continues to grow.”

Three attractions shortlisted for Hull Lifestyle Awards Three top Hull city centre attractions have been shortlisted for Hull Lifestyle Awards. Hull Maritime Museum, Ferens Art Gallery and Wilberforce House have all been nominated and people can now vote for their favourite. Councillor Terry Geraghty, Portfolio Holder for Culture and Leisure and Chair of Hull Culture & Leisure, said: “We are delighted that three of the city’s popular venues have been shortlisted. This highlights that they are playing a major role in the delivery of the UK City of Culture celebrations, hosting many high quality events, major exhibitions and displaying world renowned art, all with free admission. “I would like to urge everyone to show their support and vote for their favourite attraction.” Public voting is now live and will continue until midnight May 15 2017 at http://www.hulllifestyleawards.com/vote

Going Out

Dirty Rotten Scoundrels A brand new musical to East Yorkshire. It is based on the highly entertaining film starring Michael Caine and Steve Martin and Beverley Musical Theatre are bringing it to Beverley in June The show revolves around a suave conman living on the French Riviera swindling rich gullible women out of their jewels and money until a new kid on the block comes along and tries to take over his patch. The story unfolds as they become more and more competitive and they take their eye off the ball with hilarious consequences. The musical is full of entertaining songs sung by a 30 strong cast. It has a modern musical score played by 8 professional musicians and a very talented cast of principals who play their roles superbly. Once again the show will be performed at Beverley’s Memorial Hall whilst the Hull New Theatre is being refurbished. It is a great venue for live musical theatre and with a bar serving your favourite tipple, which you can take to your seat, it’s a recipe for a perfect night out. Tickets are just £10 and can be booked by ringing Beverley Music and Dance on 01482 881584 or calling in to collect tickets at their shop on Norwood Beverley HU17 9EZ. The show runs from Wednesday June 14th to Saturday 17th 7.30pm and a Saturday Matinee at 2.30pm. One of the scenes in Dirty Rotten Scoundrels is based in a casino, so the cast of Beverley Musical Theatre went along to Napoleons Casino in Hull to be shown the rules of roulette and to learn how to be a croupier. It was a great chance to dress in costume and do some entertaining research. To learn about and support projects promoted by Destination Beverley go to www.spacehive.com and search for Beverley.

Travel

HULL

and close to home..

Are you enjoying the excitement of being the City of Culture? The city seems to have a real buzz. Here at Marion Owen Travel we wanted to join in with the activities but as our business is travelling away from home thought it was not possible. UNTIL... we did a walking tour around Hull with Paul Schofield. Anyone taking part in one of his walks will know the wealth of knowledge he has of our city. After walking the city’s sights for over 2 hours we where feeling worn out! That is when I remembered Paul doing a tour around Hull by coach for one of our ABTA regional meetings some years ago and know this is something coach tours coming to Hull partake in. Why should we miss out because we live here? This is a way that you can learn interesting facts about Hull from the comfort of a coach. Paul will be doing his first tours around the city on 6th June leaving from our office10.30am or 1pm.We live in a great city why not come along and find out more. At this time of year Lynne and I are busy checking out ships. The Rivers ships come out after their winter maintenance and many cruise ships arrive in the UK following cruising further away. This past month we have seen four River ships for the first time, this ensures you know exactly what standard and style of ship you are booking. All ships viewed where in the super city of Amsterdam. There must have been around 60 river ships all moored up and ready for the summer season, it really was a sight. Amsterdam is a great city to visit, it has such a lot to offer and can easily be visited for a day on a dash aboard North Sea Ferries sailing from our own port of Hull. If you are looking for museums there is a super choice including “The Hermitage Amsterdam” you will be spoilt for choice. I had a memorable visit to Ann Franks House and just love walking the canals with their wonderful house boats and super cobbled streets and wonky old buildings. For a leisurely tour of the city you can take to the water and enjoy a canal cruise with commentary. There is a great choice when it comes to shopping and eating. Amsterdam is also renowned for its red light district. Many attractions are within walking distance of the Central Station too so all you require is a good map and a watch to make sure you are back on the coach in good time to return to the ship. In the UK if you visit Scotland, Wales or one of our many offshore islands you get the feel of being far from home. Yet you still use the same currency and even if you can hear another language they also speak English. Let’s hope for a great summer that allows us to make the most of our time home or away. Where ever in the world you are looking to travel we would love to make your booking for you. Marion

Cottingham Feature

Cottingham: Worth a visit? Laying just 4.5 miles north west from the city centre of Hull, Cottingham is reputedly one of the largest villages in England. In 6th century AD, the village was founded by Anglo-Saxons who called it Cottingham, -‘The homestead of Cotta’s people”. Surrounded by almost 10,000 acres of good arable land, open pastures, woodlands and marshes, it was built on the spring line of the wolds. Today, it is a thriving village but with all the attractions and amenities you would expect from a modern town. Perfectly situated in the middle of East Yorkshire, only a ten minute drive from the bustling town of Beverley and the extensive amenities of the City of Hull, it is no wonder that the population has grown and business in thriving in Cottingham. If you are looking for an alternative shopping destination, why not try Cottingham. The high street boasts many high street retailers, but what makes this village unique is the large amount of independent shops, offering a huge range of interesting and diverse goods. Having browsed the shops for those special gifts or fashion purchases, why not grab a coffee or lunch in one of the many

eateries that are on offer. From quaint tearooms, to Italian cuisine or a traditional pub lunch, everything is within a short walk. Good road links and a train station in the village, plus the added bonus of plenty of free car parking, means getting to Cottingham, couldn’t be easier. So what is it like to live in Cottingham? Well with numerous housing developments continually underway by some of the largest UK house builders such as Bellway and Persimmon, coupled with the older character properties ranging from quaint terraced housing, to larger detached period properties, offering affordable family living in this central location, it is definitely worth a look.

Cottingham Feature plus various day nurseries, out of school clubs and child minders, it is perfect for family living. All the other services you may require are also within the village, such as medical and health services, plus a wide variety of independent building and trades . The village always has something going on, from various annual music events like Cottingham Spring Board Festival, the annual Cottingham Open Gardens event and of course, Cottingham Day which is celebrated on the 1st Saturday in July and of course the regular Thursday Market held on Market Green which has been running for many, many years! On the outskirts of the village you will find Cottingham Parks, housing not only a golf and health club but also an equestrian centre, however, within the village itself you can also find the lawn tennis and bowls club, and a social and snooker club.

Spotlight On – Station Mills, Station Road, Cottingham. In the 1850’s the Provincial Gaslight and Coke Company built a gas works, north of the railway station. The gas works site was later used for a cloth mill – Station Mills. Today, these buildings now form Station Mills Business park which has grown and developed over the years and is home to a number of small local businesses. Nestled alongside the railway line and well located to serving the village of Cottingham and the wider East Riding area, a diverse range of businesses can be found here including, Cottingham MOT’s and JJ’s Smart cars who between them can keep your car on the road, Hull Carpet & Flooring who for many years used their unit as a showroom before moving with the times to offer a ‘choose at home’ service, to the recently opened Terracotta Pot Company.

Hull City Column

Thrown away yet again!

Marco Silva has attracted International attention for his success in the Premier League. Our current home form puts City the top ten across Europe, the national media love him, potentially English teams could be chasing him and even Inter Milan have been linked with Silva. Even if had kept City up or not he could have bigger fish to fry next season. He came here with a team of coaches to try to make an impression in the most high profile competition in Europe and Hull City have provided the opportunity to showcase his talents. His contract runs out in May and he is more than likely going to move to a club like West Ham or Southampton in England or a big club elsewhere in Europe. Porto have also been linked so a trip to Preston North End seems highly unlikely.

East Stand Views...

Hull City could lose their management team, star players currently without long term contracts and loan players who currently comprise half of our first team. The one big difference to the current situation and the position faced by the Allam’s following the relegation of Phil Brown’s team is that we appear to have some decent young players coming through. The Academy team reached a national cup final last season and took West Ham to extra time whilst four or five have reached the first team squad or gone onto to become first team regulars on loan elsewhere. We do not want to see these players as the basis of our future squad but at least there are some home grown

To Contact

players to call upon if there is no summer investment. Dare we even contemplate minimal investment, a few free transfer hasbeens, the youth squad and a few of the remaining players who don’t attract offers in the summer.

“Relegated and many of us are worried about the future”

Fans were heartened that the Premier League are examining the club’s membership scheme. City must have lost 2000 fans this season since the implementation of this plan and many more may not renew irrelevant of which league we are in. This is tragic. The future of the club depends on attracting young fans and the club must recognise the years of support by senior citizens. To charge both young and old the same price as an adult breaks Premier League rules so let us hope concessions are forced upon the club’s pricing structure. However with relegation its back to square one as the FA will no doubt take months to start their investigations. The sad thing is that the membership scheme, name change proposals, hostility to the council, removal of community sports from the Gemtec arena and regarding fans as an irrelevant has cost so many fans. To contemplate the closure of West Stand upper was unbelievable for a Premier League team but so many have been priced out or lost interest. Let’s just hope the Allam’s have now managed to reclaim some of their investment in the club and they take up any offers in the summer holiday. The

club is now worth a fraction of what it was twelve months ago and their greed has ruined the club. Asking £150 million was unrealistic when new owners could have come in for a more realistic amount. Now will anyone want the club? Two years of parachute payments but gates of 10,000, few players remaining to launch a promotion challenge and the stadium site is no part of the deal. They will be lucky to receive offers of £20 million or any bids at all. Great business they have done, reject a range of potential deals and end up with a club worth a fraction of their inflated value and unless they take all the transfer money and Sky cash they will they ever pay off the clubs £100 million debt to the Allams. The ongoing negotiations to sell the club is ultimately the reason for their demise. The owners lost interest, Bruce walked, Phelan wasn’t up to the job and beginning the season with thirteen players set the tone. There was insufficient team strengthening throughout the year, net spend of £7 million and lack of quality players not least a right back for several games. Silva did his best but relegation was caused by two people more interested in recouping money than funding a Premier league team.

Words by Woody Mellor

With three games to go it appeared that Hull City could escape relegation but three hours of inept football has led to yet another relegation from the Premier League. They didn’t turn up for the Sunderland game and instead of taking an easy three points they lose 2-0 to a relegated team. Four more points subsequently for Swansea meant only consecutive victories over Palace and Spurs could offer salvation but by letting Palace score within a minute the writing was on the wall. Relegated and many of us are worried about the future. Will the club avoid a further relegation next season? The loan players will be leaving, star players moving on and more than likely Marco Silva too.

Wish you weren’t here? At the time of writing this piece, it’s approaching mid-May and we’re having one of two types of weather; cold and windy or wet and humid, so there’s little wonder many people are counting down the weeks to getting away from our unpredictable climate for a fortnight of guaranteed sunshine. Personally though (and I know I’m in a minority here) I will do anything to avoid the sunshine holiday hoopla. Brochures littering the house for months, the tablet opening itself to yet more exhausting holiday websites offering too much choice with too much at stake if you get it wrong. The whole palaver turns the process of booking a two-week break into a full-time job, which is ironic really given that’s the other big thing you’re wanting to get away from. The economically sensitive holiday market means that you’ve got to have detailed legal knowledge of your consumer rights and be prepared for months of wrangling if your tour operator goes bust, your suitcases take an entirely different holiday to the one you’re on, or your phone goes walk-about. Then there’s the whole airport security routine to negotiate with it’s necessary but constantly changing rules and procedures. Woe betide any holidaymaker whose not done their homework on that one or anyone who thinks they can just rock-up and go, it’s a wonder ‘holidaying’ hasn’t made it onto the national curriculum yet? Then there are months of shopping, dieting, worrying about how big (not if ) your bum will look in almost anything and everything and don’t let’s get started on the programme of depilatory works required! Give me drizzly North Yorks, or Devon if I really want to escape and a non-conformist sized suitcase of jeans, flip-flops, wellies, a Kagoule and as many over- sized bottles of toiletries and heavy paperbacks as I like and I’m off, on a complete whim if I want to. I’ll come back having had loads of laughs (we Brits are great at laughing at ourselves) having to start the diet after the holiday, not before, and, despite having spent more time outdoors than I have all year, my legs will still be the same shade of Daz white. Every photograph will be another scene from the frizzy-hair horror collection and I’ll be completely ‘cultured-out’.

Gardening

How Much Can You Save by Growing Your Own Vegetables?

June is National Fresh Fruit and Vegetables month, so we’ve cultivated a guide to growing your own veg in order to grow the money left in your wallet. By growing your own veg, you can cut down on your supermarket bills and budget more easily. Home-grown produces also tastes so much better because it can be cooked within minutes of harvesting – there are no ‘food miles’ involved. The Maths With the majority of Brits having a passion for pruning according to a new First Utility survey, now’s the time to put energy into your gardening efforts to grow your bank balance. According to This is Money, you could knock more than £1,000 off your yearly food bill by growing your own veg. You could grow 1kg of baby carrots for around 25p, but you’d pay about £3.30 for 1kg of baby carrots in a supermarket. You can also get a large bag of around 20 specially grown seed potatoes for under £4, with each potato capable of growing 3kg worth of additional potatoes. Eoin Redahan, spokesman for the Royal Horticultural Society, says: “From a crop-for-money point of view, lettuces and potatoes are among the best. A salad may cost £1.50 in the shops but a packet of 100 seeds less than £1. One potato plant can yield more than a dozen potatoes – maybe five pounds of spuds.” Allotting time to Allotments Research from the National Society of Allotment & Leisure Gardeners has found that allotment holders spend an average £202

growing vegetables and fruit every year that would sell for £1,564 in shops. During the ‘Dig for Victory’ campaign in the Second World War there were 1.4million allotments in Britain. Now there are now only 300,000 allotments left but this has not stopped demand, with 100,000 people on waiting lists. Donna McDaid, spokeswoman for the National Society of Allotment & Leisure Gardeners, says: ‘If you’re interested in renting an allotment, call your council and ask for the allotment officer. If the council has a long waiting list it might still point you in the direction of any available private allotments… If you can get a dozen or so people together interested in allotment plots the council is duty bound to hear your case.’ Pruning your Grow List If you’re most interested in saving money and have limited space to do so, start your vegetable wish list with the most productive and useful crops. Tomatoes and chilli peppers are ideal vegetables to start the growing habit as they are easy to grow in pots or grow-bags and don’t take up much space. Potatoes, runner beans, spring onions and salad leaves also require little attention once planted. Tomatoes, courgettes, climbing beans, pumpkins and squashes are just a few examples of foods that pod prolifically. Tomatoes can produce up to around 5kg (10lbs) of fruit in a season and courgettes will produce anywhere between 10 and 20 pods over their cropping period. Another thing to consider is how long your crops take to grow before they’re ready for harvest. While a single flush of radishes may not yield a massive crop, the fact that they take just three to four weeks to mature means you can enjoy considerable savings over the course of the growing season if you keep sowing them. Beetroot takes maybe twice as long to grow but is still relatively quick to harvest – just remember to stagger the planting of your vegetables so that they’re ready to pick or dig up throughout the year.

Exam Stress

Are you facing a summer of tears, tantrums and traumas? Family life with teenagers can be stressful at the best of times, but it’s around this time of year when tensions can boil over. It’s not only formal exams that make it a stressful time, with deadlines to be met for coursework projects and important decisions and back-up plans to be made about their future direction, the pressures can seem relentless. It can seem as if exam worries are engulfing the whole family and it takes a tricky juggling act to keep everyone happy (ish). You can’t take the exams for them (good job in most cases) but you can help keep them on track and as healthy and happy as it’s possible to be in the circumstances. The brain is like a muscle, it responds to exercise! Most people eventually get bored with the same routines at the gym and the brain is no different. Memory responds to varied mental stimulus so drawing pictures or mindmaps, listening to music, reading aloud, making up rap-style lyrics with revision notes, dancing whilst reciting equations can provide a great workout for the brain. Don’t assume your teen is ‘messing about’ or having yet another break if their revision techniques seem unorthodox at times! Brain food One of the best ways parents can show their support is to provide a regular supply of reasonably healthy snacks and drinks. A tray delivered to their study space will be appreciated (even if not acknowledged) and helps keep students ‘on-task’. Hot chocolate seems to have both comforting and restorative powers, whilst sandwiches and fruit provide an energy boost without the huge sugar rush. Get them off to a great start If you’re able to, take your child on a shopping expedition for new study stationery. Highlighters, pens, coloured paper, sticky notes and folders needn’t cost the earth and can reinvigorate enthusiasm for study! Help create a study zone and a chill area Your child will probably have an area where they spread all their papers and books. It’s going to look a mess, especially with dirty coffee cups, broken biscuits and crisp packets littered amongst it. It may not look like it to you, but there is probably method and order to the chaos. Resist the temptation to tidy up and don’t make

To Contact

an issue of it, it’s not worth the argument and it’ll be gone in a few weeks. Do however create an area that’s a chill space, even just a corner of a room away from the books with some cushions and a throw or blanket, somewhere your child can relax when they’re not studying (and again, let them make it their own area). A change is as good as a rest. ‘All work and no play’ isn’t healthy for anyone, and a change of scene can work wonders for motivation and keeping a sense of perspective. Meeting up with friends is important, so too is catching up on social media. It’s also important to encourage some form of physical activity. Playing football, dancing or going for a run, especially with friends, provides both physical and mental release. Encourage new study techniques and resources. Textbooks, revision guides, course notes and sample papers are traditional revision aides, but there are loads more resources out there. Encourage your child to explore web-based workbooks,

online revision resources, and study forums, even TV and radio discussions and documentaries. Not all will be relevant or engaging, but one or two might be so the trick is to sift through and find the ones that work. When all’s said and done… Remember it will soon be over for this year and whether the eventual outcome gets your child to where they’d like to be or not, there are always different options, an alternative route and another chance next year. Good luck!

CROWNED CHAMPIONS!

Crown AFC are the new name on the Humber Premier League Trophy for the 2016-2017 season.

After a nervy March, picking up only 5 points from a possible 9, Crown went into April knowing it was a must win game away to title rivals Sculcoates Amateurs. That game didn’t go to plan either with the home side leading at the break 1-0, but with 3 second half goals, Crown ran out 3-1 winners and the upper hand into the final weeks of the season, which would see them as eventual league winners. A humble statement of thanks was released by club manager Dean Markham, ensuring everyone was recognised throughout this journey, highlighting the hard work has been carried out over a number of seasons and not just this historic one. Finally thanking Mel Markham, Dean’s Dad, and highlighting local football is far more than what goes on at training and matchday and everything that happens off the pitch is equally as important. Dean went on to say “Massive thanks, well done and congratulations to all!!" Crown are also on for an unprecedented double, with a Whiteheads Fish & Chips Cup Final place against LIV Supplies on Thursday 11th May. The HPL Division 1 side will be no push over having already beaten HPL opposition in Chalk Lane and South Cave in the semis.

The search is on to find the best young chef in Hull and East Yorkshire. Organised by the Hull and East Riding Hospitality Association and now in its eleventh year, the Copper Saucepan competition seeks to discover the Apprentice Chef of the Year and culminates with a live cook-off as part of the Beverley Food Festival in October. The winner will receive £300 and a trophy. The runner-up receives £100 and both finalists will also get the chance to spend a day in the kitchens of the acclaimed Winteringham Fields restaurant alongside celebrity chef Colin McGurran, twice a winner on the Great British Menu television series. Launching this year’s competition, Paul Vinsen, chairman of the hospitality association (HEYHA), said: “This competition is designed to encourage and showcase the up-and-coming young talents of the industry. Catering has become a popular career choice, thanks to the power of television and the celebrities it creates, and now more than ever we are seeing some real talent coming through at a young age.” There is no upper age limit for participants - the competition is open to anyone currently working in the catering industry with four years or less experience. An entry form is available on the HEYHA website (www.heyha.co.uk). Deadline for entries is June 9. Initially, they will be asked to devise a three-course menu which will be judged on the quality and uniqueness of the dishes, including the use of good quality local produce. From those entries a shortlist of entrants will be drawn up and invited to prepare their menu in no more than two hours in a cook-off at Hull College on Monday June 26. Dishes will be judged on flavour and execution.

restaurants. “With the competition going from strength to strength, we’re really hoping for a bumper entry,” said Mr Vinsen. Past winners have come from Lazaat in Cottingham, Tickton Grange Hotel, The Lairgate Hotel, Beverley, the Pipe & Glass, South Dalton (twice), the Millhouse, Cottingham, Hallmark Hotel, North Ferriby, and the Star at Sancton.

The two finalists will then be chosen and invited to cook a twocourse meal, live on stage, in no more than 30 minutes, at Beverley Food Festival on Sunday October 1.

Last year, Connor Berney, of the Ashbourne Hotel, Killingholme, triumphed in the final in a cook-off against Vicky Martin, of the Holiday Inn Hull Marina.

Past winners of the Copper Saucepan trophy have gone on to further their careers, working in some of the region’s finest

Half a dozen reasons why you should make a Will: Executors – A Will allows you to choose who you would like to appoint as your executors. If you die without a Will, your relatives can make an application to the Probate Registry but this may mean that the people you would have chosen are not appointed to administer your estate. It could also lead to delays in dealing with your estate. Distribution – A Will lets you say how you would like your estate distributing after your death. You can leave gifts to people who would not benefit under the strict rules of intestacy such as charities, family and friends. If you die without making a Will and are not married or have children your parents, siblings or sometimes more distant relatives could benefit from your estate. Beneficiaries – A Will can ensure that people you wish to benefit can inherit from your estate. If for example, you have children from a previous relationship, your Will can ensure that all of your children can inherit from your estate. If you are not married, your partner will not inherit from your estate unless you have made a Will. Specific Items – A Will lets you leave certain items such as jewelry or family heirlooms to certain people. You can also leave cash gifts. Guardians – A Will lets you appoint Guardians to look after your children if they are still under the age of 18 when you die. Your Will can also provide support for your children’s maintenance and upbringing. Graham & Rosen

THE LAST WORD

FIONA’S FOOD FOR THOUGHT

By Fiona Dwyer, broadcast journalist, PR & media consultant, slave to 2 children and a husband. Smaller Chocolate Bars

You probably heard last month that chocolate bars and sweets will soon be a third smaller after a major push from Public Health England for the food industry to cut 20% of sugar from the main snacks and foods that children eat in order to tackle obesity. There are 2 things that strike me here. One is that for years now the chocolate bars I remember 20 years ago, like Mars Bars, Double Deckers (a personal favourite!) and Boosts have already been getting progressively smaller and more expensive. You used to get a normal sized bar, a treat size and a fun size. Now ‘normal’ bars are shorter and thinner and more like a treat size - and they’re going to produce them a third smaller? I take my chocolate very seriously and if I want to buy a chocolate bar I want to feel like I’ve eaten one! Which brings me to my second point. Will the sweet manufacturers reduce the price of the chocolate bar by a third because we are buying a smaller product? No, I don’t think so! I have no objection to tackling obesity. It’s a big problem. I’m just not convinced this is the way to do it. Educating children about eating healthily is the key and, as my father used to say, “Moderation in everything.”

Heads Together

I have been incredibly impressed with the Heads Together campaign set up by the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry. Hearing them talk so openly about mental health will certainly help to end the stigma attached to it. After Prince William’s FaceTime chat with Lady Gaga and Prince Harry’s podcast about his own struggles following his mother’s death, calls to mental health helplines went through the roof, many callers saying that hearing their stories gave them the push they needed to finally talk about what issues they had. There is a shift in public opinion about mental health and people need to know that it’s OK to talk without fear of judgement.

Clever Cat

I have written before about my cats and the fact that one of them simply refuses to use the cat flap. Well, unfortunately, I can’t report that anything has changed there. He still scratches at the door to be let in, has a quick bite to eat and 2 minutes later he’s scratching to go out again. Frustrating is not the word! Anyway, he has a new trick! He comes into the bedroom anywhere between 2 and 4 in the morning, gets up onto his back feet and slams the door shut to wake us up, then starts scratching to be let out again! The thing is, when you go downstairs, bleary-eyed, to let him out, he goes through a 10 minute routine of rolling around the floor for a stroke and having something to eat before finally going out, by which time you are wide awake, in a bad mood and can’t go back to sleep. I’ve never been one to lock my cats out in the laundry at night, but I am really thinking about changing my mind on that!
