Hull City Council Adoption service is now part of One Adoption (North Yorks & Humber)

One Adoption highlights growing need for adoptive parents in the North Yorkshire and Humber area …as figures emerge showing increase in sibling groups awaiting permanent families Adoptive families who can provide a loving, stable home are needed right now for just over 100 children in the northern Yorkshire and Humber area. In Hull there are 23 children (ages 0-7) currently waiting for Adoptive parents (as of October 2017) Of these 17 are single children, and 3 sibling groups of 2 And *new information published today to mark National Adoption Week (16-22nd October), shows that 61% of children waiting for

adoptive families across the whole of Yorkshire and Humber are brothers and sisters in groups of two or more. “Children with a plan for adoption range from babies to school age and they all need permanent families to care for them as they grow and develop into adults,” said Joanne Hewson, Chair of the new One Adoption Regional Adoption Board, which is highlighting the need for more adopters in the region. “One Adoption is made up of friendly, supportive, expert teams from all over the region and we are encouraging anyone considering adoption to get in touch and find out more about becoming an adoptive parent.” Today’s figures also reveal that: •

50 % of children in the northern Yorkshire and Humber area need to be placed with a sibling.

• The children’s ages range from babies to seven years.

One Adoption is a new approach comprising experienced professionals in three regions: One Adoption North and Humber includes some local authority adoption teams: • Hull City Council, East riding, North Lincs, North East Lincs, York and North Yorkshire The regional partnership is a new way of working where many of the individual adoption agencies across Yorkshire are working together to improve adoption services and outcomes for children.

for children for our six local authorities, so it doesn’t matter where you live, we have children waiting for a loving family and we want to hear from you.” Joanne Hewson added: “We are at the beginning of our journey of creating the new One Adoption way of working and collaborating together we will speed up the adoption process in some localities, and help children be matched to the right adoptive parents more quickly, by pooling expertise, skills, knowledge and resources across the county.”

Mary McKelvey, Head of Agency for One Adoption North and Humber, added: “Please contact us to discuss whether adoption could be right for you. We need all kinds of different families to meet the varied needs of children across our region. One of the benefits for people interested in adopting a child is that we are looking for families

Tips for buying property abroad

A guide to the things you need to consider if you’ve always wanted to buy a holiday home abroad.. If you are looking to find a home in the sun, France, Spain and Portugal remain firm favourites, although some will, of course, set their sights much further afield. Crucially, if you are tempted to dip a toe into the foreign property market in the hope of bagging yourself a bargain, you need to be aware that the process is complex. When buying overseas, there are a host of legal, financial, tax, cultural and also linguistic issues to consider. For this reason, it is essential to plan very carefully.

To Contact

Choose your location

of the countryside.

At the outset you need to decide on a country – and a particular location within that country.

At the same time, you need to decide exactly why you are buying: is the property for holiday use, retirement or investment. And are you going to rent out the property – or live there yourself?

To do this, you may need to carry out lots of holidays or short visits until you get to really know an area and decide that it’s right for you. Having decided where you want to live, you then need to decide what kind of property you want. That might, for example, be an apartment in a block with access to a beach and a pool, or a remote cottage in the middle

Work out what you can afford You still need to sit down and work out carefully exactly what you can afford to buy in your chosen location, as you don’t want to end up over-stretching yourself.

You also need to be sure you can actually afford the property after you’ve bought it. There might, for example, be extra fees to cover the upkeep of communal areas, such as a shared pool or gardens.

Do your research Don’t forget to spend time checking out local facilities, such as the shops, restaurants – and potentially the coast. Also ensure there are good transport links to the main cities and airports. Continued on page 8

House & Home Get your finances in order When spending hefty sums on an overseas property, it’s vital to get the finance right. The simplest option may be to fund the purchase by raising funds based on equity you have in your UK property or other assets. Alternatively, you may need to take out a mortgage. In more tried-and-tested markets, such as France, Spain and Portugal, you may be able to take out a mortgage in the local currency. In newer markets you will probably be limited to

advice from a reputable local specialist – and someone who speaks good English. You should also ensure they are up-to-speed on the laws and rules of the country in which you are buying. In addition, it is essential that you choose someone who will protect your interests – and not someone recommended by the estate agent. Personal recommendations from friends, family and colleague can be a helpful starting point.

raising finance on other assets in the UK. Crucially, you should look to have an “agreement in principle” before you start property hunting. This will tell you how much you can borrow – and also demonstrates to estate agents and property developers that you are a serious buyer. To sort your finance, consider approaching a mortgage broker which specialises in purchasing property abroad.

Appoint a solicitor When buying a place overseas, you should take proper legal

House & Home Check all the paperwork Never sign a contract that you don’t understand or which is in a foreign language, and never make a payment without checking with your legal adviser. Also take the time to check the tax rules on property purchases, as buying abroad can come with a host of tax challenges – such as potentially exposing yourself to inheritance tax in your chosen country.

Factor in all the costs As well as the mortgage, make sure you allow for transaction costs, including stamp duty, legal fees, taxes and insurance. In Spain, for example, the transfer tax, notary fees and other costs can potentially add another 10% to the purchase price.

Take care when transferring money When purchasing abroad, you need to be aware of the fact you will be exposed to exchange rate movements. With this in mind, it is worth using the services of a foreign exchange company.

To Contact

These firms will offer “forward contracts” enabling you to lock into the exchange rate for up to 12 months in advance. This means you can protect yourself from currency fluctuations. At the same time, the rates on offer from currency specialists are also likely to be a lot more competitive than those offered by the high-street banks.

Understand the responsibility Before signing on the dotted line, make sure you are ready for the commitment of owning a property in a foreign country. Make sure you do all the preparation you can. Talk to agents, locals and holidaymakers

in your chosen area so you fully understand the market, and spend as much time as possible getting to know the language and the culture.

Moved by Art workshops

Humber Street Gallery is encouraging young people aged between 16 and 25 to sign up for the next in its series of Moved by Art workshops that will focus on the Hull, Portrait of a City photography exhibition. These interactive sessions are intended to give a greater insight and appreciation of the exhibitions on display at the gallery through structured discussion and activities designed to allow participants to express their thoughts and feelings about each exhibition in a creative way. The next session takes place on Thursday 2 November and will explore the city through the eyes of its young people. It is aimed at anyone considering a career in photography through to people who just enjoy taking photographs on their phone. Hull, Portrait of a City has been commissioned by Hull UK City of Culture 2017 and saw Martin Parr and Olivia Arthur, internationally renowned photographers from the Magnum Photos collective, visiting Hull to explore the rich culinary scene and to capture the creativity of the young people in the city. The session will be facilitated

by Moved by Art’s James Nash, a poet and writer, and Hull based photographer Ruby Hogg-Deverell and will provide people with a guided tour of the exhibition followed by facilitated discussions about the work, descriptions of the techniques on display and how the results were achieved, an insight into the photographers’ methodology, demonstrations

of how to achieve visual effects through photography, group discussion about the exhibition and a session on shooting on disposable cameras featuring some photographers who use them. Ruby said: “The sessions are a great opportunity for people to gain a better understanding of some of the exhibitions in the gallery. We encourage people to not just look at the work, but to discuss it with us and with each other. Sharing perspectives and observations is a great way to appreciate art as we all take something slightly different from it. “We’ll also be giving people skills they can take away and use straight away, whether they’re used to using a high-end camera, their phone or a disposable.”

David Cleary, Gallery Assistant at Humber Street Gallery, said: “Everyone is welcome at the sessions, but we’d really like to encourage those people who wouldn’t generally choose to visit a gallery to come along and give it a try. The sessions are really informal and are a great opportunity to really understand the exhibition and learn how to achieve similar results with your own photography.” The Moved By Art session for Hull, Portrait of a City takes place on Thursday 2 November from 5pm-7pm at Humber Street Gallery in Hull. To book a place, please email info@humberstreetgallery.co.uk. The exhibition Hull, Portrait of a City is open until Sunday 31 December 2017.

ARENACROSS TOUR 2018 FlyDSA ARENA in Sheffield

SATURDAY 10TH FEBRUARY 2018 The Arenacross Tour is set to explode into 2018 with a bigger and better format for its seven-round actionpacked UK indoor Motocross race series and Freestyle extravaganza - and the penultimate leg of the Tour will take in the FlyDSA Arena on Saturday the 10th of February. AX is high-octane entertainment at its very best. It throws together an intoxicating mix of world-class indoor Motocross racing, highflying Freestyle Motocross and a show to rival any music festival. In its five-year history, it has seen thousands of fans streaming through its doors every year. Enthusiastic fans packed out The FlyDSA Arena, when the 2017

Tour was in town earlier this year. They enjoyed a night of tense race action, high-air FMX antics, lights, lasers and music. Expectations were at an all-time high, as there were just 12 points separating the first and sixth placed Pro riders and there were two Brits in the mix. The evening didn’t disappoint, and the ultra-close racing kept the crowd on the edge of their seats. A couple of South Yorkshire’s own stars of the future – Harvey Shaw and Kian Knowles - were in the racing mix and, as well as making their family and friends proud of their ontrack prowess, they worked hard to help promote the AX series with a spot of television and radio work. 2018 promises to again deliver an electrifying Tour. A crammed agenda will cater for mini-racing gladiators from the age of seven

– who manage to fit in school and homework around the gruelling AX races - right through to the most talented line-up of Arenacross Pro racers ever to place a wheel on UK soil. Away from the racing line, the Freestyle MX boys never fail to impress with their electrifying, high-air whips and flips which keep the audience hollering for more. In its five-year stint, the UK Arenacross series has been revered for showcasing FMX at its very best and that’s why the big-hitters of the sport, the FMX royalty, have made the series a must-do affair and worked it into their busy schedules. When it comes to AX; X-Games gold medallists and Nitro Circus

superstars abound with Spaniard Edgar Torronteras and the UK’s very own Jamie Squibb and the Bolddog Team at the fore, together with arguably the most spectacular double-flipper in the world, 6’ 4” Czech uber-cool superman, Petr Pilat. Commenting on the growth and popularity of Arenacross, ArenaSports Live (the company behind AX) boss Matt Bates said; “I believe we have a massive future! As well as ramping up the AX experience for our UK based fans, we’re extending into Europe next year and I’m set on making sure we develop both the riders’ rewards, team support and take the entertainment of AX to a whole new level.” Be a part of the action and get your tickets NOW! Tickets priced from £30.24 Adults & from £17.92 Children (aged 12 & under) including booking fee are available online at www. flydsaarena.co.uk by phone on 0114 256 56 56 or in person at the Arena Box Office.

Life Skills

A Leader After God’s Own Heart

“Everything rises and falls on leadership.” John C Maxwell The world is crying out for good leaders in every sphere of society - public and private enterprise, healthcare, local government, politics, education, media, the arts, ministry...

Yet this is what God expects of a leader, whatever their sphere of influence. “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.” Philippians 2:3-4 (NIV)

There is no shortage of people who think they are good, because they’ve risen to leadership positions, but that does not mean to say that they are. Their management skills may be exemplary, but management and leadership are two different things. Management is about systems and processes. Leadership is about people. When managers approach their people as they do their systems and processes they soon run into problems – and vice-versa. The English word for “leader” has its root in the Old English læden which means to guide or bring forth. I love this definition because it sums up what I do: bringing forth what’s hidden within people, the light from within, treasure obscured from view. The Hebrew word for leader, on the other hand, comes from the word, ‫( מַנְהִיג‬mahn-HEEG). Its root means to drive. Its verb structure lends it the meaning that causes others to drive or act i.e. one who motivates others into action. Combine the two and we’re left with “a guide who brings forth the best in people and motivates them into action”.

How are you leading others today? More importantly, how are you leading yourself? If you cannot follow your own lead – why would anyone else? Words: Annalieza Landa

What the bible doesn’t teach us about leadership isn’t worth knowing. l We learn that leaders come all shapes and sizes – tall and short, young and old, rich and poor, strong and weak. There are born leaders, like Deborah and Nehemiah, and leaders that need to be mentored, nurtured and encouraged, like Moses and Elisha. l The most unlikely people are called to lead. Sometimes they undergo a transformation in the process and sometimes they don’t. God gives them opportunities. Some see them and seize them, others don’t and they waste them. l We learn that being a good leader requires of us a good “heart-set” as well as mindset. Cultural norms are turned on their head. We are conditioned from childhood to believe and accept

that leaders exist to be served, deserving of their rank. Scripture sets us straight: Leadership requires a heart for serving others. Serving? How would this be received in your company boardroom? With silence and an unhealthy dose of scepticism?

Pumpkin and Red Pepper Soup

with candied shallot and pumpkin seeds

Don’t waste any of the pumpkin brains scooped out of your lanterns this Halloween, try this warming spicy pumpkin soup instead. Preparation time: 15 minutes • Cooking time: 35 minutes • Serves: 4

Ingredients For the soup: • 4 red peppers, deseeded and cut into quarters • 30g butter • 1 tbsp rapeseed oil • 6 shallots, diced peeled • 750g pumpkin, peeled and diced into 2 cm pieces • 1 red chilli, deseeded and finely chopped • 4 garlic cloves, peeled and crushed • Leaves of one sprig of thyme • 1.2 litre good vegetable stock • 100ml double cream (optional) • Sea salt and black pepper For the candied shallots: • 25g unsalted butter • ¼ tsp of cumin seeds • 8 (250g) shallots, peeled and sliced • ¼ tsp ground cumin • ¼ tsp paprika • 1 tsp honey To serve: • 2 tsp chives, finely chopped • 30g pumpkin seeds, toasted • 120ml low fat crème fraiche

Method To make the soup: Place the peppers skin side up, on a baking sheet and roast in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes, until the skins are charred. Remove from the oven and place in a bowl. Cover with cling film and leave to cool. Once cool, peel off the skins, and reserve the flesh. Meanwhile, melt the butter with oil in a large, heavy based saucepan. Add the shallots, pumpkin and red chilli, season with sea salt and black pepper and sweat the vegetables for 5-10 minutes without browning. Add the garlic and thyme and cook on a low heat for a further minute. Pour in the vegetable stock, bring to the boil and simmer gently for 15 minutes. Add in the red peppers and cook for a further 5 minutes. For the candied shallots: Melt the butter in a small pan over a medium heat, add the cumin seeds and shallots and fry until soft. Add the ground cumin and paprika and cook the shallots for a further then 1 minute, stirring the shallot mixture all the time to prevent burning. Fry until caramelised for approx. 1-2 minutes. Remove from the heat and season with sea salt and stir in the honey. To finish and serve: Blend the soup in a food processor or with a hand blender and adjust the seasoning to taste. Return to the pan, if a little thick add more stock and if you wish, stir in the cream. Gently reheat the soup and ladle into warmed bowls. Place a spoonful of low fat crème fraiche in each and sprinkle with the chives, toasted pumpkin seeds and candied shallots.

Local People, Local Lives

She’s Got Claws

We caught up with the electro pop artist in 2015 for her EP Synthetic Emotion, now she is embarking on releasing her second album called War Torn.

Hull Mag believes it is time for a catch up on all things electronic. HM: When we last interviewed you, you were on the verge of releasing a 4 track concept EP called Synthetic Emotion, how did that go? SGC: It went extremely well! I had some awesome feedback especially on social media and loads of interviews too. Electronic Sound Magazine even did a piece on me, Andy McCluskey from OMD wrote a fantastic review too and to top it off I was contacted by Chris Payne who asked me if I would like to write him an album for his publishing company called The Electronic Music Library. He was with Gary Numan in the 70s and 80s on keyboards and violin and wrote the song Fade To Grey with Midge Ure and Billy Currie. HM: Wow, how does it feel to be picked up by a synth icon?

gave Chris 16 tracks and asked him to arrange them as I couldn’t make my mind up which one should go first as they were all my favourites. HM: That sounds amazing, so now we shall chat about your new album, War Torn. How does this differ from Synthetic Emotion and writing for EML? SGC: War Torn is an anti-war concept album, my writing for this album is a combination of all my emotions and how I especially feel about war and conflicts. It differs from the previous releases because it has string arrangements which for me tug at your heart and push across the emotional concept of fighting or running for your life. During the writing I had many moments of sobbing my heart out as it is so painful to express how it feels to see what is happening before your eyes and not having the control to stop it.

it was affecting me in ways that I didn’t want to face. In the end I believe it has made me a more complete person and writer who has learned to freely express my emotions a little more than before.

There are also tracks which are full of angst as they are directed at the instigators of war and the people who believe their lies. The beats are hard and fractured and the strings and synths sing to you and support the poignant vocals, which were often painful to sing as I sang the songs from the heart.

HM: As you completed this album, did you feel you had accomplished what you set out to do?! !

HM: What inspired you to write War Torn?

SGC: Absolutely thrilled! So I set to work, giving myself just 8 weeks to complete this album of instrumental tracks as I wanted to keep a tight schedule and to show that I can be reliable. I completed it in May 2016 and it was on Chris Payne’s website very quickly after he received it. He sent me an email at 6am saying that he thinks my tracks are amazing and thanked me for such an awesome job done. I had the biggest smile on my face, which is a first at 6am (laughs out loud).

SGC: Seeing all the families running and trying to avoid the bombings, then living in those camps and the desperation to find a place of safety for their children and watching people fall to the ground sobbing their hearts out over a dead mother or child, and children wandering aimlessly trying to figure out why it is happening to them. Unfortunately there is too much inspiration as war has many perspectives and has driven me emotionally to write.

HM: Tell us briefly about the writing of this electronic album for Chris Payne.

HM: With the subject being so traumatic how did it affect you as a writer?

SGC: Chris asked me to write 12-15 instrumental tracks which nodded to the 70s synth era but with my own slant on it. It’s a combination of fast tempo and slower ones which gives the album the ‘peaks and troughs’ you need for an album to keep the listener interested throughout. In the end I

SGC: It encouraged me to dig even deeper into myself to bring out all the feelings and emotions to complete this album and to get across musically how destructive conflicts are on families across the globe. I reached depths which resulted in many tears and moments of whether I could actually complete this album as

To Contact

SGC: Yes, I didn’t want to stop until I had accomplished what I had set out to do, no matter how difficult it was emotionally. I don’t see a reason why you would begin to write music if you have nothing to say, it’s all about expressing you as an individual and your perspective on life. It frustrates me to listen to music which has no soul and goes on and on about the same subject over and over again. Music is an art which is there for you to express how you personally feel about a subject, not what you have been told to say or do. This album is how I see war and how I see it affecting families, it’s all about compassion. I am hoping that families who are being put through hell will hear this album and know that there are people in the world who feel for them and are trying to help in any way they can. HM: Is War Torn written solely from you? ! ! SGC: Absolutely. To write from a personal perspective, personally I couldn’t have the distraction or another’s influence on how I want to express my feelings on any kind of subject. If you have the ability to program, produce and engineer then I believe you should learn to

write by yourself, also to find out who you are as a person without any influence or distraction of others. HM: You write, produce, programme, engineer and even master your albums, how important is it for you to have total control of your work?! !SGC: It is very important to control my work as it represents me and I need to make sure what I release is the genuine article and not a combination of other people’s emotions in there too. Please don’t believe that I wouldn’t work with others as this isn’t true. I have in the past worked with others and have been very successful with other writers and performers, She’s Got Claws is my baby so maybe it’s my maternal instinct kicking in. HM: The photography for your front cover of War Torn is very striking, who photographed you and why did you choose this particular photograph? SGC: I use the same photographer, O-Ten Photography, as he knows what I like and how I like to express myself visually. There has to be a rapport with the photographer as they are giving the visual perspective to your work. Chris (O-Ten) had the idea of photographing in sepia as war has always been part of our lives therefore sepia, just like black and white, is timeless. We watch the news on our TV screens and how war is presented to us on a daily basis. News broadcasters know how to present

Local People, Local Lives it to encourage us to watch as it isn’t happening to us so we don’t mind watching it while we eat our dinner. However to truly watch actual events without the representation of the news and other media we find it hard to look and would prefer to turn away. Covering one eye in my photo represents this and the projection of the child running from the bombs dropping on his city is saying that even if we look or don’t look these atrocities are still happening. It is a generalisation of how we look at war and how we watch it. HM: You are donating money to UNICEF from the profits of this new album, why did you choose this charity? SGC: UNICEF is one of the main charities who sees these conflicts and the devastation it causes to children around the world everyday. If I could give something just to help even in a small way then I know that I am helping to make these children lives a little more bearable. There are so many orphans due to these conflicts and the trauma these children are being put through is beyond imaginable. If I could go out there and help I would, but in the meantime I can

help by giving what I can with the release of my album. HM: Can you explain briefly what Pledge Music is and why you are using Pledge Music for this album? SGC: Pledge Music is a music website which asks music lovers to pledge money to help artists release albums or singles. In return the artist offers promo copies, demo tracks, t-shirts and anything which is related to making their music. With the help of Pledge I am able to release my album and give money directly to UNICEF when people pledge for my music. When the pledging time is over, which it states on my page, each person will receive what they have pledged for. HM: Will you be releasing a single from this album, what is it called and when can people find this on iTunes, Amazon and Spotify? SGC: Yes I’m releasing a single called Armchair Generals, which is the first song you hear on the War Torn album. When playing my album to a selective few, this song was the most popular and grabbed people instantly, so this is why it is opening the album and being released first. It’s released on

Please remember to mention

30th November 2017 on iTunes, Amazon, Spotify and many other websites. It is a download only, as this will cut down the cost of releasing it so I will be able to give more to UNICEF from this single too. HM: When is the album War Torn out for release and where can people listen to a preview? SGC: War Torn is set for release in January or February 2018. The pledging on Pledge Music for this album is set to close on 30th November but it may be extended, so the more pledges I receive the more I can give to UNICEF and the sooner I can release the album. ! The release date is yet to be confirmed, please check She’s Got Claws website for updates www.shesgotclaws.co.uk HM: Very last question, will you ever consider performing live? SGC: Of course! I used to be in a band and we gigged all the time. With being solo and using

electronics I do not want to be a karaoke performer using backing tracks, so I would need to find a few keyboard players and programmers to make this work. In the meantime there will be videos via my You Tube account. HM: Thank you and good luck with the pledging and the release of your new album. If you would like to support her War Torn album by pledging money which will help to raise funds for UNICEF please check out her Pledge Music page: http://www.pledgemusic.com/ projects/shesgotclaws!

Health & Beauty

Avoid the wrinkles that aren’t down to ageing City air, the wrong moisturiser and even eating too many biscuits can all give you extra wrinkles. Are you unknowingly making these wrinkle causing mistakes? You eat wrinkle-making food Yes, you read that right - some foods give you wrinkles! Sugar is your enemy when it comes to youthful-looking skin because it actually weakens the collagen within your skin, making it more wrinkle-prone and less elastic too. Even if you don’t treat yourself to much sugary sweetness, carbohydrates such as white pasta, rice and bread will have a similar effect since they also bind to the collagen and elastin that help keep skin looking youthful. So swap your white carbs for wholegrain and try to avoid sugar altogether.

You like to party hard Enjoying life will give you some nice laughter lines but overdoing it will give you more wrinkles than you’d like. Regular sleep is essential if you

want your skin cells to have a chance to regenerate and refresh overnight.

Your moisturiser only moisturises There are plenty of women who rely on moisturisers such as coconut oil or even Vaseline to keep their skin youthful and supple. But while these kinds of moisturisers might work really well to put moisture into the skin and even keep it there, they aren’t protecting your skin from the biggest cause of wrinkles

– the sun. And this isn’t simply about slapping on sun lotion when you’re on holiday or the golf course, this is something you must incorporate into your daily routine. “I use a cream with a minimum factor of 15 every day,” says make-up artist Emma White-Turle. She recommends either Nivea’s Cellular Anti-Age Facial Day Care (£14.99 for 50ml) or if you’re willing to spend more on your skin, Chanel’s Sublimate LA Protection UV (£245 for 50ml).

You’re highly strung Stress produces cortisol which has been shown to increase inflammation – that in turn makes wrinkles more likely.

Add to that the fact that when you’re stressed you’re more likely to pull a frown or concentrated facial expression, and you can see why stressed out people might end up with deeper wrinkles than others.

You’re a regular in the city Cities such as London have extremely high pollution levels (the city was at its legal limits for polluted air within the first five days of 2017, according to air quality reports) and according to research published in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology, that could mean more skin damage in the form of age spots and wrinkles for you. Of course, if you live in the city it’s difficult to avoid but thankfully you can remove particular matter, the tiny molecules that make up pollution in the air, by cleansing thoroughly when you get home. Using a cream that helps build up your skin’s barrier defence is also useful. Try a mineral-based cream such as Origins Mega-Defence SPF 45 (£30 for 30ml) which will help prevent airborne pollution damage.

Top five celebrity treats

So what are the weird and wonderful beauty treats our celebs can’t do without? 1 Japanese Nightingale Facial – it is reported that Victoria Beckham is a big fan of this skin ‘treat’ in which the droppings from the Japanese Nightingale are mixed with bran and applied to the skin. It’s said to be excellent for treating acne scarring and discolouration of the skin. 2 24-Carat Gold Liquid Facial – a favourite of the Victoria’s Secrets models, it’s said to free the skin of impurities, increase oxygenation and slow down collagen depletion, resulting in a more youthful complexion. And with a price tag in the region of £1000, it certainly lives up to its name. 3 The Vampire Facial – fortunately, this isn’t as gory as it sounds. Both Bar Refaeli and Kim K have had this facial recently, which involves drawing blood from the arm which is then spun in a centrifuge to separate the platelets before being put onto skin with acupuncture-style needles. The results are said to be outstanding: fingers crossed us mere mortals get to try it soon...

4 Intraceuticals oxygen machine – normally only found in high-end salons, it’s alleged that Madonna has one of these machines in each of her six homes! It works by a process of hyaluronic layering - a non-invasive method that uses hyaluronic acid to plump and hydrate the skin and help make fine lines and saggy skin disappear. 5 The Bottled Water bath – if you’re a fan of all things natural, you’ll love this. The world’s most expensive treatment bath is exclusively offered by a hotel in Miami in which you can bathe in twice-filtered Evian water sprinkled with Gerbera daisies. The cost of this ‘exotic treat’? £3500 a time! Think I’ll stick to good old tap water and rose petals (even if Serena Williams is said to be a huge fan of the benefits).

Investing in tulips! Planting bulbs in October and November puts a real marker down for next spring and something to look forward to. Planting tulip bulbs in autumn for a beautiful display next spring is a joy. Whether you are just planning to plant tulips in a pot or if you have a garden to fill, it is making a real investment for next year and the return of spring. Tulips don’t need to be planted until October or November. They only start putting roots down then and the cold temperatures help to wipe out viral and fungal diseases that lurk in the soil and which may infect the bulbs. Planting late is a traditional means of disease protection. Dig a trench/hole 20cm deep and, if you garden on heavy soil, cover the base with 5cm of washed sharp sand, horticultural grit or spent compost. Add a handful of bonemeal to encourage formation of next year’s fl owers and mix it into the soil/grit at the base of the hole. Place the tulip bulbs, pointy end up, about eight cms apart and cover with soil. If you garden on heavy soil you can mix grit at approximately one-third volume with the infill soil. If you’re short of space, cover the bulbs with soil and then add a second layer of bulbs before filling in the hole. There is still enough soil above the bulbs to allow you to over plant without damaging them. Most gardening books recommend planting tulips at HullMag.pdf twice the depth of the bulb – at about 8cm in the case of most

tulips – but it’s becoming an increasing view to plant deeper, which has lots of advantages. Tulips flower more reliably year after year. In the bulb fields of Holland, tulips are planted near the soil surface to encourage them to reproduce. The higher soil encourages reproduction of the bulb, with the mother bulb developing satellites, or bulbils, around her base. Once this has happened, most of her energy goes into these offspring, so the mother bulb will almost certainly not flower the following year, but the bulbils will not be large enough to flower for two or three years after that, resulting in a blind bulb. If planted deeply, tulips are less likely to try to reproduce and are more likely to flower for year after year.

Hull City This has been another month of ups and downs for Hull City. However, we have now managed that elusive away win at the expense of Barnsley. The team now sits in 14th position and 9 points behind the current promotion contenders but six or seven points have been lost through conceding goals within the last five to ten minutes. Late goals have deprived them of victories at both Reading and Norwich. There are signs that the team is coming together at long last especially with the return of players from long term injuries. Players have been played out of position at the beginning of the campaign with a midfield partnership of Henricksson and Larson being particularly weak but the return of David Meyler has brought energy and tackling to central midfield. Henricksson is an attacking

defence which lacks solidity. The team can be wide open and until recently Hull City had conceded the most goals as well as being one of the divisions top scorers. If only they could shut up shop then one goal away from home could lead to a victory. After losing nearly everyone from last years defence a new set of defenders have been cobbled together and it has not gelled. Hector is so inconsistent, Michael Dawson is struggling with pace and marshalling his colleagues and the full back position is another issue. Steven Kingsley was signed from Swansea to replace Tymon and Robertson but struggled, not least due to the lack of defensive support from Grosicki. Aina is on loan from Chelsea reserves and looks fairly composed going forward but is often caught out of position and far too casual. Max Clark is however doing a reasonable job at left back. It seems a long time since he was the local star of the future when playing left back for England Schoolboys and it appeared he was heading for the inevitable free transfer and lower division future. Maybe he will cement his future here and

A block booking for made for 40 passes in our section of E5 back in 2002 yet less than a quarter remained on that evening despite the past fifteen years being a glory period in the clubs fortunes. So many have lost interest and worryingly if we fall down into the lower divisions once the Sky money comes to an end there will no longer be gates of 20,000 to sustain a revival. The club had more funds than lower division rivals in the early days of the KC Stadium and for the past nine years the club has had more funds than comparable teams through Sky funding and the parachute money. Next season this funding could come to an end and gates could be down to 10,000. The glory days could be coming to an end unless promotion can be achieved over the next 18 months or there is a takeover soon. We will struggle to compete in the Championship on these gates.

midfielder and has looked better further up the field though Jon Toral also had a fine game in this position in the 6-1 victory over Birmingham. Frazier Campbell, scorer of the winner at Barnsley; looks better suited to the role of lone front man though Nuoho Dicko has a better game and scored against Norwich. The two wide men are arguably two of our better players this season with Jarrod Bowen being the divisions top scorer with seven goals already whilst Kamel Grosicki is having much more of an impact than last season. He has not gone into a sulk since his failure to generate a move in August and even when not playing to the maximum every week he still has the ability to create chances or score at this level. He may gain a move in January but he could help push the side towards a play off challenge over the next couple of months. Whether the side can generate consistency is an open question. There are so many young players, several players yet to bed in and a

he could be a further inspiration to other young players at the club. Jarrod Bowen is the star of the season so far so maybe there could be other young players knocking on the door especially with team showing such inconsistency. Could Brian Lenihan or Josh Clackstone offer better alternatives at right back though it’s unlikely that we could see the Chelsea loanee being dropped. He is being targeted by most teams however so we will have to see if the clubs coaches can work on his defensive weakness. Off the field it’s more of the same. The fans are still unhappy and it is noticeable how far the crowds have fallen. The average gate is now around 15,000 and this also includes around 1000 visitors. How many people have lost interest over the past five years is open to question. In 2008 there were 22,000 passholders and thousands wanting tickets plus 37,000 fans at Wembley. It was noticeable at the recent Preston game that so many have lost interest since 2002.

THE LAST WORD Keeping Safe

Top tips for cycling and running in winter Be seen when out running Winter runners should pay close attention to what they are wearing, according to Hull running expert Nigel Grimshaw. Nigel suggests wearing a reflective, lightweight, waterproof high-visibility jacket along with a flashing armband.

As the long winter nights approach, it gets increasingly challenging to exercise outside. However, you can still enjoy running and cycling in the cold and wet. Nic Gough consulted some Hull experts for tips on how to run and cycle safely and enjoyably during the winter months.

Getting your bike ready for winter So you are determined to stay fit over the winter by going out cycling, despite the cold, dark and often wet conditions of the roads and paths. The local cycling club recommend that you make subtle changes to your bike to make it safe to ride. The first thing to do is to reduce tyre pressure slightly because this increases the contact area with the ground and improves your grip. Experts also advise a six-step plan to get your bike winterroadworthy: 1. Clean the drivetrain (the gears, chain and crank set) and then apply a wet lube 2. Fit mudguards if you don’t have any 3. Clean the bike thoroughly after a winter ride 4. Swap your normal tyres for heavier-duty winter tyres (consider tubeless tyres to avoid punctures) 5. Get your bike professionally serviced ahead of winter

6. Ensure your lights work Wearing high-visibility clothing is common sense, of course. It’s also important to wear base layers to keep yourself warm, but not to the point where you are too hot. The local cycling club also advise wearing Merino wool baselayer clothes and a heavier, windproof and waterproof jacket with high-visibility elements. Thermal socks and waterproof gloves are also recommended.

Safety on the road It is vitally important that you have your wits about you when riding in winter. Look further ahead than normal to prepare for hazards. Aim your front wheel at dry patches and sections with more grip and avoid painted road markings and manhole covers. More potholes appear in winter and they can often be concealed by being filled with water. Key safety tips from our Hull Cycling experts are: • Use only your rear brake in icy conditions with gentle, progressive application • If your bike slides on ice or damp surfaces and starts going sideways, don’t panic. Make small corrections rather than sudden over-steering movements. • All of the products mentioned above are available from the many cycling shops in Hull also at online cycle stores.

Layered clothing ensures you won’t overheat. A first layer of compression clothing works well, teamed with a hat and gloves, if it is particularly cold. Nigel usually wears a neck buff to stay warm and well ventilated. “Always run towards the oncoming traffic so you can take avoiding action if they don’t spot you,” said Nigel. “Staying hydrated is as important in winter as it is in summer. Take a small bottle

of water because you will still sweat in the cold, particularly on distances greater than 10km or when you run for more than an hour.” There are also advantages to joining a running club over the winter months. Having others to run with helps motivate you to run in the cold, Nigel pointed out. And it’s safer, particularly for women, it’s sociable and you will learn new running routes. Nigel added: “Winter is also a good time to cross-train, so it’s worthwhile going to the gym or Leisure Centre for some calisthenic workouts to strengthen the core or the pool for a swim.”

THE LAST WORD

FIONA’S FOOD FOR THOUGHT

By Fiona Dwyer, broadcast journalist, PR & media consultant, slave to 2 children and a husband.

REORGANISING MY LIFE I’ve decided to reorganise my life. I haven’t worked out all the details yet but I am always so busy and tired that I think a reboot is in order! Over the next few weeks I’m going to work out the most important things – of course, spending quality time with my family comes top of the list – then I’m hopeful that everything else will fall into place. Somebody said to me recently that when you die you don’t think about how much money you have or haven’t got, or how dedicated you were at work or any of those things, it’s often more about how you wished you’d done more with your family, had more time with them. I’m not saying I’m giving up work or anything that drastic, but I am intending to take back control of my time and using it the way I want to, not the way “life” necessarily dictates!

CHRISTMAS IS COMING! I know, I know. Summer, though, seems a long time ago now. Of course we’ll have Halloween at the end of October but then we’ll blink and it will be Christmas. So I figure I need to get a plan in action. As ever, I often have great intentions and then end up leaving it all to the last minute even though it’s more stressful that way. So this year, I WILL do it gradually. I may even write my Christmas cards in November. It’s definitely going on my plan! I intend to surprise even myself this year! I’ll let you know how it goes!

A QUESTION….. Why, oh why, when I put my power lead for my computer neatly in my laptop bag, I get it out the next time and it’s all tangled up? Not just a bit! It seems to thread itself through into knots. I really don’t understand it – but I bet I’m not the only one!
