Hello Readers,
Welcome to this months edition of HULLMAG. I hope that you are all finding the time to enjoy some of the many exciting events and happenings in Hull and the East Riding. I know that I am looking forward to The Beverley Vintage & Retro Fair and the Beverley Food Festival. Musically I note that Black Uhuru are playing the Adelphi and Roland Gift is playing the Welly soon - they are both on my must attend list. We have a great feature on the East Yorkshire Business Expo and I would encourage all you business men and women to attend this event. It is a great opportunity for you to meet fellow businesses from across the region and further afield and hopefully make some lasting contacts that will generate more business for you and the local economy. I would also say that all students who are doing business courses should attend the seminars - they are educational and you never know you could meet a future employer!

Easy ways to make your home chic
These improvements not only make the home more pleasant to live in but also, according to estate agent William Rousset of Milton Stone, can add to its value. “Uncluttered properties with attractive colour palettes are simply more appealing to buyers,” he says.
While locating a stopcock or fitting a new plug socket might be beyond many of us, we Brits haven’t totally lost our DIY mojo. Our tool kits are thinner on the ground than they used to be – 30 per cent of young people don’t even own one – but our appetite for home improvements is insatiable.
What’s more, studies suggest that taking part in “meaningful activities” such as DIY can be beneficial to our mental health – the positive effects are even more pronounced if you avoid hardware stores, says Bulmer. “I don’t spend my Sundays trawling DIY shops or even looking on social media,” he says. “I just collect things I love and find ways to use them to enhance my home.”
“People have cottoned on to the fact that you only need the most basic skills to d rastically improve the appearance of your home,” says Christopher Gilbey, founder of bitsbobsandoddjobs. com, a company that supplies handymen to lazy Londoners. “They might pay people to do the boring jobs, but they’re becoming more creative in other respects.”
“In the past, DIY was a quick, cheap, short-term fix; whereas today people are taking a long-term approach, working with what they have and using premium products old and new to create something wonderful that will last”

and a paintbrush and, in many cases, no tools at all. “I’m a great believer in simply moving items around to keep things fresh, and digging up forgotten favourites,” says designer Matilda Goad. “Rearrange your cushions, cover a chair with a pretty throw, find some baskets to store the mess. Cover the walls in photos.” Edward Bulmer, an architectural
historian and founder of Edward Bulmer Natural Paint, agrees that the definition of DIY is changing: “In the past, DIY was a quick, cheap, short-term fix; whereas today people are taking a long-term approach, working with what they have and using premium products old and new to create something wonderful that will last.”
While you’re there, why not upgrade your door ‘furniture’ too? An elegant knocker or knob immediately makes the exterior of your home appear more sophisticated. House & Home add symmetry and give the front of your house a tailored look. Don’t forget to invest in the planter itself, as well as the plant – stone for a traditional look or zinc or concrete (available from trouva.com) for a more contemporary vibe. Inside, a vase of faux flowers (yes, really – nowadays they can be so lifelike) on a windowsill or shelf gives a sense of occasion: Willow Crossley’s collection for oka.com is both affordable and realistic. Furnish the hallway However small and dingy it is, an attractive ceiling light, a runner and a piece of furniture will give your hallway a more polished look. “Proper furniture in your hall, even if it is the slimmest console table or a bistro chair, fools the eye that there is more space,” says Salvesen.
SITTING ROOM
Throws and cushions Overhaul a tired sofa with a throw (see atlanticblankets.com) and some striking cushions. “Buy a pair of cushions for an ordered look – the eye enjoys symmetry – then throw in a couple of different patterns to complete the look,” says Nicole Salvesen. Fermoie.com has an extensive range of piped cushions (£76).
yellow shades to create space and light. “If you have beautiful cornicing and plasterwork, don’t cover them in dark colours, go for subtle pastel shades,” he suggests. To make a room appear taller, paint the cornice and ceiling the same colour, adds Salvesen. Beware, though, that houses with green and yellow walls get the fewest sales/letting enquiries, according to research by draker.com. A new lighting scheme Strategically positioned lamps (preferably on a dimmer) will enhance the atmosphere of your room without you having to lift a paintbrush. Create symmetry with pairs of side lamps, and liven them up with new shades – see pooky.com for fabric shades
and matildagoad.com for raffia scallop shades. “Lamp shades are a detail that can sit well in a room whether the light is on or off,” says Matilda Goad. The statement rug A funny-shaped room can be rationalised by the addition of a rug. “It structures the space; you can position your sofas either side of it and your coffee table on it,” says Salvesen. Sisal rugs from IKEA are a good low-budget option. Blinds not curtains If you don’t love your curtains, get rid, says Max McMurdo, designer and TV presenter, as they reduce the natural light, collect dust, and yellow in the sun. Replace them with tasteful
bespoke blinds in shades to contrast with your paintwork from blindstogo.com. Add further interest by painting the woodwork around the windows a darker shade than the walls. Salvesen recommends deep neutrals such as Dream On and Milk from Paint the Town Green (paintthetowngreen.biz). Hide your TV Paint the insides of your TV console or shelving a darker colour to distract the eye from a mammoth TV. “It doesn’t have to be black – it can be dark blue or grey,” Salvesen explains. Hang some wall art, or position a piece of sculpture to create a different focal point. Continued on page 10
A wall of books Books are the most appealing of ornaments – all you need is some shelves to display them. IKEA’s Kalax shelves (£39; ikea.com) are a good place to start – once you’ve painted them a deep hue (see grillo-designs.com for instructions on how to paint IKEA furniture) and filled them, no one will know they were flatpacked. And floating-shelves. com has a range of hardwood wall and corner shelves that can be supplied unfinished. Clever brushwork A new paint colour is the obvious way to refresh a room. This summer is all about contrasting ceilings, according to Edward Bulmer – rococo blue and

House & Home Group pictures Clusters of prints & paintings give the impression there is more art around the house. Lay your paintings on the floor to decide how to arrange them – interior designer Rita Konig suggests hanging them offset with no “tram lines” between them. Christopher Gilbey recommends eye level for a single picture – people always hang art too high: “Something bigger above something smaller looks better.” “Photographs work with paintings,” adds Salvesen. Cheap mounts and frames are available at eframe.co.uk.
the room. Rita Konig and Edward Bulmer are both advocates of rugs on walls – they don’t have to be vintage, you could go for a new wall hanging from Uzbekistan from rugstoreonline. co.uk. Upgrade your hangers If you don’t have space for a wardrobe in your guest bedroom, buy a cheap clothes rail from IKEA and invest in some pastel-coloured linen coathangers from ninacampbell. com, £25 for two.
BEDROOM
Dress your bed A bed should always be covered, according to interior designer Sophie Conran, even if you’re not using the room. Rather than replacing your bed linen, invest in a blanket or quilt to throw over your bed. For the full effect, design your own headboard (onion dome-shapes are in fashion) and get it made up at headboardworkshop.co.uk. Update your wardrobe Small changes such as adding antique-look door handles from anthropologie.com and a darker paint colour can make a big difference to your bedroom, says Matilda Goad. If you’ve got time, paint skirting boards and door frame to match. Brighten brown furniture Lift the look of your bedroom by painting your chest of drawers or bedside tables, says Max McMurdo: “Frenchic’s range of chalk paints that offer diverse colours, finishes and textures can transform a forgotten
Somewhere to sit A comfortable bedroom chair instantly transforms the space from somewhere to sleep to somewhere to spend time reading and relaxing, says Salvesen. Steal one from your sitting room or invest in a Continued on page 12 piece of furniture.” Or you could cover your bedside tables with tablecloths, says Rita Konig. Lauraashley.com sells checked tablecloths for £15.12, while chadnichowk.co.uk has a range of reasonably priced Indian cloths. Tune your electrics One of life’s little luxuries is a lamp that can be turned off without getting out of bed. Conran recommends hiring an electrician to put in a 5 amp circuit for any lights with plugs to ensure they can be on a dimmer. Maisons du Monde sells tasteful bedside lamps with shades for £15.59. Line your curtains Take down existing curtains and update them with an interesting lining, suggests Conran: “My curtains are lined with a bright yellow fabric, so that when the sun comes up it shines through, creating the illusion that it’s sunny, even on a dull day. It’s lovely to get that flash of colour when opening and closing the curtains.” Hang your rugs Rather than repainting your walls, hang a rug or tapestry over the bed to transform the look of

House & Home Charley chair in retro orange from made.com, currently on sale for £129. Just don’t let it become a dumping ground for clothes. Tray of treasures If you make one upgrade to a guest bedroom, it should be the addition of a tray, suggests Konig. “They are useful for corralling stuff into what feels like order,” she says. On it you could arrange a box of tissues, a candle, and a vase of flowers. Borrow one from your kitchen or buy lacquer trays at £174 from ritakonig.com.
BATHROOM/ DOWNSTAIRS LOO
Statement towels Filling your bathroom with matching towels, robes and bathubats will bring cohesion and colour to a small space. For reasonably priced Egyptian cotton towels see soakandsleep. com. Sew coloured loops to white handtowels to make them hook-friendly. Upgrade your showerhead Your shower experience can be improved by screwing on a new showerhead. Not only will it look better, but you can choose additional settings such as massage, jet and mist. Remove the old one with pliers or a wrench – all new showerheads come with fitting instructions.
signs of age, but re-doing the whole lot is a step too far, there is always the grout pen. It’s similar to Tipp-Ex, brightening and concealing dirty marks. Unibond Antimould Grout Pen, £7.94, homebase.co.uk. Paper your bathroom Stickers and stencils have had their day but wallpaper trim or border is back on trend – and nothing like as difficult to put up as wallpaper itself. A trim around the top of the wall can transform a downstairs loo, according to Nicole Salvesen.
KITCHEN
Nice jars Even if cupboard space is limited, you can de-clutter your kitchen surfaces and add interest by decanting pasta, rice, coffee and tea into attractive containers. Salvesen recommends Kilner jars with lids such as those from Le Parfait (leparfait.co.uk). Rethink your cupboards Another way to clear your kitchen surfaces without building new units is to improve existing cupboard interiors. “Spice racks screwed to the inside of doors, hooks and additional shelving will give you more useful internal storage,” Salvesen explains. Sdslondon. co.uk supplies a range of wicker storage baskets for cupboards, along with wire pull-out baskets. If you’re confident with a drill, you could even upgrade your cupboard doors – classic shaker style never goes out of fashion. Shakerdoors.co.uk supply doors for Ikea units.
Paint the floor This is a quicker and easier alternative to tiling, and can brighten the appearance of a bathroom. If you’re feeling brave you could even paint it with a chequerboard pattern or stripes, says Rita Konig. Organise the chaos The best place to store cosmetics, towels and other bathroom paraphernalia is on the wall. Ikea.com is great for shelves and cupboards and theholdingcompany.co.uk for rattan baskets and containers – apparently, it’s de rigueur to keep loo rolls in a basket rather than in a holder. Demould There’s nothing more off-putting for guests than grubby grout and bathroom mould. Blast spores with HG Mould Spray, and wash and de-scale plugs, taps and shower drains with a limescale cleaner. If grouting is showing

Hang up your plates Don’t be afraid to hang art on the walls – it immediately makes a kitchen look less clinical. If you’re worried about grease, hang plates instead of paintings. Scour your local vintage shops for interesting ceramics or buy online from anthropologie. com or Rockett St George at rockettstgeorge.co.uk.
Replace your handles Decorative brass and copper kitchen cupboard handles and bull knobs are taking over from flat-fronted units, and don’t be afraid to mix metals, Salvesen says: “I’ve got chrome taps and brass knobs, and no one notices.” For simple handles, see thehandlestudio. co.uk or for something fancier willowandstone.co.uk.
Inject some colour Rather than repainting your whole kitchen, overhaul the appearance by painting the island or units a contrasting colour. “If the island is a different tone, it will give more of a sensation of space,” says Salvesen. Bulmer recommends using the pale green shades of an English country garden to help blur boundaries of house and garden.

Careers & Education
Looking for your dream job or a career change? A host of fun activities will be held at East Riding Leisure Centres during the school summer holidays. Hello Readers, My name is Graham Hirst and I specialise in recruitment. Over the years i have helped 1000’s of people back into work and land their dream job. Whether you are fresh out of college, having a midlife career change or deciding retirement isn’t for you, I have teamed up with BeverleyMag to bring you help and guidance whatever your situation. So let’s get started.
www.linkedin.com is a great way to start networking online. Interviews Just like the requirement of a CV, you are almost certain to have an interview, so be prepared. All companies ask different questions to try and catch you out, but the basics will be the same. Never be late, keep eye contact, research the company and study the job role carefully. Always remember that if you are rejected it is not personal. You may also have a little wait after your interview before you here something one job could have as many as 50 applications. Stay positive and keep applying while you wait. Graham Hirst www.jobsearch.direct Do you have a topic you would like me to cover? If so, please e-mail me at: helpdesk@jobsearch.direct
How to choose the right tutor As a parent, choosing the right tutor may seem like a daunting prospect, but do your homework on time and you’ll prepare yourself to make a better-informed decision.
In this issue we will start at the beginning and what every jobseeker needs to know before you start looking. Your CV When applying for any job you will almost certainly be asked to send in your CV. Make sure your CV is up to date and relevant to the job you are applying for. Over the years i have helped many job seekers out who would have multiple CV’s for the positions they are applying for. If you are unsure about your CV there are many great resources available online that can help www.total-cvs.co.uk will review your CV for FREE and provide you with great feedback.
Here’re a few tips from a parents perspective to help you get it right: 1. Ask around. Many parents use tutors but it’s not something they necessarily shout about. Once you get talking to people you’ll be surprised how many other parents have experience, good and not so good. 2. Exams are changing. You’d obviously expect a tutor to know their subject matter, but are they up to date with changes to the exam system? Make sure your tutor is teaching the right curriculum according to the exam structure your child’s school is now following. 3. Meet the tutor(s) with your child and see how they interact. You want the person who can get the stuff your child finds difficult over to them in a way they understand and will retain. Watch and listen for cues as to how comfortable your child is in their company and be led by that instinct.
Network We have all heard the phrase it is not what you know it is who. This can certainly be true when looking for a job. Use your contacts. Ask yourself: who do i know that can help me get the job i want? Perhaps they already work there or know someone that works at that company.
Promoting Local People, Local Lives and Local Stories.
4. Exam craft is as much about confidence as anything else. A good tutor will give your child confidence in their abilities and will make them believe they can do it and that the extra work is going to pay off. 5. Agree on payment terms, number and length of sessions and any additional resources you’ll be expected to supply before the first session starts and ideally not in your child’s presence. Beverley Food Festival returns for a twelfth taste-tastic year! When Beverley Town Council organised the first Food Festival in 2006, little did they know it would go on to be an annual success enjoyed by thousands of residents and visitors alike. The original idea was to bring a few producers from Beverley’s rural hinterland into the town centre to help celebrate local food, so on a crisp Sunday morning in 2006, thirty-five producers set up their stalls along with a small Food Theatre, in what proved to be a big success for the Town Council - one that has grown stronger year on year. This was the first Food Festival in the East Riding and has led the way for several to follow.
There will be live broadcasts from our town’s very own Beverley FM. The beauty of the entertainment is that it’s all fabulous and local like the food!
Starting at 9:30am on Sunday 1st October, with an official opening by The Mayor of Beverley Councillor Ann Willis at 10.00am, the festival runs until 4.30pm, with a wide range of different foods from around the region available to purchase and enjoy. Shoppers can find everything from locally reared meat and traditional preserves, to tasty tangy cheese and real Yorkshire ale. One of the favourite festival sights is hundreds of people walking around the streets of Beverley, with sticks of freshly bought local sprouts over their shoulders! Additional these traditional stalls will be some carefully selected hot food venders, giving people the chance to taste some terrific street food not usually available in our Yorkshire market town.
Now, twelve years later this has become an award winning event, winning the 2017 North of England ‘Rural Oscar for Tourism’ and commendation at national level, and ‘Remarkable East Yorkshire Tourism Award for Best Large Event’ in 2016. This year approximately 140 stalls will be attending the event, alongside the well-loved Local Food Theatre Marquee. It is anticipated that thousands of people will attend, making it one of the busiest days in Beverley calendar, bringing a welcome economic boost not just to the food producers, but also to retailers and the local hospitality trade.
Once again, the Food Theatre Marquee will be open to the public, with a host of local chefs ready to whip some ingredients
Please remember to mention
from stall holders into delicious and exciting dishes. As usual, a highlight will be the annual “Ready, Steady, Cook” style competition at 12:00pm between presenters from BBC Radio Humberside Phil White and Jonathan Parker. This will be followed by the hotly contested HEYHA Copper Saucepan Apprentice Chef competition, with two aspiring young chefs.
Familiar festival face Professor Fiddlesticks will be out and about to entertain families, whilst through the town centre musicians from The Processed Pea will entertain shoppers. Beverley Brass Band will help launch the day and Beverley Garland Dancers will put in an appearance.
Beverley Food Festival is part of British Food Fortnight, Chef Raymond Blanc said “This is a great event and it has obviously grown in popularity and its offering over the years. What a good example for others to follow. This is the perfect way to involve local suppliers and farmers to get in front of their community and I would be keen to know how many of them got on having been involved. A fantastic event that I am sure will continue to grow and grow.”
Beverley Town Council hopes residents will have an appetite to once again join the festivities on Sunday 1st October 2017, where there will be something available to suit all tastes. A family day of food festivities and fun!

Ten benefits of spending time outdoors
Yes, fresh air really can do you the world of good – from feeling happier to helping you sleep better. So what are you waiting for?
published in the International Journal of Immunopathology and Pharmacology. Researchers also found that blood pressure levels were lower after just 15 minutes of walking.
Get outdoors to feel happier, sleep better and even save money 1. You’ll feel happier in minutes Just five minutes of exercise in an outdoor green space is enough to significantly lift your mood. That’s according to a study published in the Environmental Science & Technology journal. And you don’t have to make that much effort to feel the effects: relatively lowimpact activities such as walking, gardening and fishing all helped boost self-esteem. 2. You’ll burn more calories You don’t need us to tell you that you’ll expend more energy if you get off the sofa and go for a walk. But even if you exercise indoors - by walking on a treadmill in the gym, for example - you still won’t see the same benefits as you would in the open air. The reason? The varied terrain, gradient and weather outdoors puts more demands on your body, and uses a wider range of muscles - meaning you’ll burn up to five per cent more calories. 3. You’ll have healthier bones Vitamin D is essential for bone health as it promotes calcium absorption from our food. And the best source of vitamin D? Sunlight! In general, you should try to get 10 minutes of sun exposure to your bare skin once or twice

a day, according to National Osteoporosis Society (www. nos.org.uk) recommendations. Remember, even on cloudy days, your body can still manufacture vitamin D from sunlight; it just takes a little longer. 4. You’ll exercise for longer Exercise outdoors and you’ll stick at it for longer than if you keep fit behind closed doors. Older adults who are physically active outdoors accumulate significantly more minutes of exercise, according to a US study published in the International Journal of Behavioural Nutrition and Physical Activity. On average, the outdoor exercisers clocked up 30 minutes more activity per week than their indoor counterparts. 5. You’ll save money There are lots of ways that getting outdoors can save you pennies. A few suggestions? Walking to the shops instead of taking the car means you won’t have to pay for petrol or parking. Growing your own veg will knock money off your shopping bill. And while you’re out and about, you won’t be spending so much on heating and lighting your home.
6. You’ll make new friends You’re unlikely to make many friends while you’re sitting in your own front room. But join a walking group or community gardening project, for example, and you’re guaranteed to meet lots of new and interesting people. You’ll also discover new places and develop fresh skills. 7. You’ll feel less stressed The key here is not just to get outside - but to head off for a walk through the woods. In Japan, this is known as ‘Shrinrin-yoku’ or ‘forest bathing’. When people go for a woodland walk, levels of the stress hormone cortisol are reduced by nearly 16 per cent more than if they simply stroll through an urban environment, according to a Japanese study
8. You’ll sleep better Get outside and do some exercise during the day - and you’ll enjoy a much more fitful night’s slumber. People who indulge in at least two-and-a-half hours’ physical activity each week enjoy a 65 per cent improvement in sleep quality, according to a study at Oregon State University. And if you’re lucky enough to live by the sea - or make an effort to visit the coast regularly - you may well sleep better than your inland counterparts. The reason? Sea air contains charged negative hydrogen ions, which boost our ability to absorb oxygen - meaning we’ll feel more energised throughout the day and more rested at night. 9. You’ll give your eyes a rest Spend all day focusing on TV and computer screens indoors and you’re likely to suffer from eye strain, headaches and even long-term sight damage. But step outside and there’s so much more to look at, which will give your eyes the workout they so desperately need. Focusing on distant objects relaxes the eye muscles, which helps lessen the strain. 10. You’ll boost your memory Need extra incentive to go for a walk on a miserable day? Spending an hour outdoors, interacting with nature, leads to an average 20% boost in short-term memory and attention span, according to a study at the University of Michigan. The researchers noted the effects were the same regardless of the weather.

How to make your time at a trade show worthwhile Here, Nic Gough, head of Marketing at Dalton Spire, discusses how to be fully prepared for a trade show. Trade shows are an incredible way to showcase your business among those within your industry and beyond. Whether you’re a start-up or a global corporation, trade shows should never be underestimated as a tool to help your business develop. There are plenty of options out there for your business. International shows such as IFA Berlin boast 19,000 exhibitors, while other, more intimate shows at regional venues offer you a more targeted audience. Regardless of the location, the diversity in exhibitors will help you establish new relationships.
Follow up
from the crowd. It’s hugely competitive and finding that one to one time, albeit ten minutes and an exchange of cards, will be invaluable for you to make an impact, so make sure you perfect that elevator pitch. Once you have identified some key targets, reach out to them prior to the show and organise a meeting, mentioning what stand you will be exhibiting at and if you’re talking on a panel. This proactive approach will make you stick in their mind before the event has even begun and will help them seek you out amongst the chaos that is at trade show.
Stand out from the crowd
The right show for the right business
Some businesses make the expensive error of attending as many trade shows as possible. While it is important to spread the word of your brand, it certainly isn’t cost effective to spend time away from the office speaking to those who aren’t going to make an impact on your progression. Spend some time looking at your business development plan and establish where exactly you want to be in the next few years – this will help you find the right trade shows.
Pre-show strategy
conversation and always make sure to tag the event account.
Once you have settled on your shows, do your research and look into the background of the other delegates. Find out who your competitors are and think how you can stand out
First impressions are everything and trade shows are no exception. Your offering could be a world first, but when there are tens of thousands of exhibitors at international trade shows, even the biggest fish can be swallowed up. The hardest task is making sure you grab the immediate attention of passers-by. A simple giveaway can be effective, but I’d encourage you to be more creative with your budget. Your stand needs to tell a story. Why don’t you create an immersive experience? LG definitely made their mark at CES 2017 with an immersive tunnel of 4K OLED curved screens representing the “nano cell” technology behind their Super UHD HDR offerings. This created not only an eye-catching stand of beautiful colours, you couldn’t avoid it; expertly achieved.
Walk the walk, talk the talk
Once you’ve got your stall set up, it may be very tempting to stay there all day and hope that everyone will come to you, especially as you have such a striking stall, but don’t be fooled. Walk around and you may even stumble across a company you haven’t heard of before or just got talking to someone who can help your business grow. It’s important to bring a formidable team to the show so they can hold down the fort while you go exploring with your business cards. It’s also a great way to assess your competition and make sure that you remain a unique voice at not only the show, but within the industry as well.
Social media
A great way to let your following know that you are showcasing at a particular trade show is to utilise the powers of social media. Why don’t you start a Facebook Live to give your followers a ‘sneak peek’ of what you are showcasing at the event? This will engage your followers and spread the word to those who may not have considered meeting with you before. Encouraging your following on Twitter, Instagram or Facebook will make sure that you aren’t invisible at an event, so at the very least use relevant hashtags, get involved in the
Promoting Local People, Local Lives and Local Stories.
The event has ended but that certainly doesn’t mean that your work is done. Following up is the most crucial part to attending a trade show, or else the networking and relationships you have forged will disintegrate. Connect with those you’ve met on LinkedIn and drop them an email to get those meetings booked. This is the most secure way to help your guarantee return on investment, whether that is through leads, meetings, sales or traffic to your website. You may not see it immediately, but widening your network will inspire positive word of mouth, and that is certainly the best bit of marketing a company can achieve. Ultimately, exhibiting at trade shows are a brilliant way to introduce your offering to a wide variety of businesses. They are expensive, so make sure you do your research before committing to either attending or exhibiting. Secure meetings beforehand, take time to make your stall striking and spread the word either on foot or on social media. There will naturally be a combination of short-term and long-term ROI from attending these shows but nonetheless when done effectively, exhibiting at shows is an invaluable method of developing your business.

How is loyalty changing the way we shop and experience brands? Here, we discuss how loyalty is changing the way customers shop and experience brands of any size. Customer loyalty is crucial to the success of a business, no matter what size. Any business owner knows that it’s better to encourage customers to return rather than always looking outwards for new business, as acquiring new customers can cost 500 per cent more than retaining them. However, loyalty is not created as a simple one-stop shop process, but is something usually built over time through a number of actions. Emma Smith, CEO of UK loyalty app, Memberoo, discusses how loyalty is changing how we shop and experience our favourite brands. There is now more competition than ever across all industries, customers have higher levels of expectations of a brand including customer service, pricing and quality of product or service. However, it’s predicted that by 2020, overall customer experience will overtake price and product quality when encouraging customer loyalty to a brand.
This is unsurprising as quite often customers will switch to a competitor after a bad experience, with patterns now showing that consumers tend to purchase from brands that they deem relevant and authentic. Tesco was one of the initial minds behind encouraging customer loyalty with the introduction of its ‘Clubcard’ to say thank you to its customers for their continued loyalty. Yet, now the majority of businesses look to introduce a loyalty scheme whether that’s through a points system like Nectar or Boots Advantage Points or a paper based card that can be stamped every time you buy a coffee from a certain venue. This is because business owners know that engaged customers are the ones who are more likely to be loyal to a brand. In fact, loyalty programs are said to increase overall revenue by fiveten per cent with 87 per cent of shopper saying they want loyalty programmes. But often, consumers do not want to carry endless cards in their wallets, making it more difficult for brands to encourage more scheme sign ups. Memberoo is a prime example of a new type of approach to the loyalty card, because as a digital app which requires no physical cards. Memberoo has almost 1700 active users in
the UK currently, with these users spending an average of seven times more than regular customers. Research also shows that overall, repeat customers spend 33 per cent more than new ones with businesses like Mokoko Coffee in Bath seeing the benefits. Yet, as we know, consumers can engage with a brand in many different ways but to understand this, we need to have the necessary data, which is initially why Memberoo was created, to work with a number of smaller brands and independent businesses to give them the insight they need to retain a competitive edge.
The explosion of social media has also changed our approach to loyalty with more than half of Twitter users stating they engage with a brand through that channel. If we love a brand, we are more likely to follow them on social media channels, with 18-34 year olds 95 per cent likely to do so, yet 96 per cent of people who discuss brands online do not follow them, leaving room to increase further loyalty. We’re also more likely promote their products either through pictures or reviews with 71 per
cent of consumers who have a good experience with brands on social being more likely to promote it to others. This level of loyalty can affect purchasing habits as 60 per cent of UK shoppers are said to rely solely on previous customer feedback to make their purchasing decisions. Yet, it can also work in the opposite way as many consumers will turn to social media to voice their concerns or complaints. Research shows that 72 per cent of customers expect a response to a complaint on social media within an hour and when this doesn’t happen, 38 per cent feel more negative
about that brand, having a serious impact on loyalty. Consumer loyalty is changing as technology is developing further, and many are not as passionate about smaller brands as they once were – although recognisable brands like Nike and Starbucks will always remain at the top, at least for the foreseeable future. For us to be able to truly understand customer loyalty in our fastpaced shopping environments, first we must continue to learn about customer behaviour and what drives their purchasing habits.

Top social media tips for small businesses Steve Mann, head trainer at Dalton Spire, offers his advice on achieving social success as a small business. As a small business, it’s likely that your marketing department is relatively small to non-existent, so the world of marketing and social media, in particular, can be extremely overwhelming. Not only that, time, staff and funding usually come in short supply making it difficult for companies to establish an online presence. Nevertheless, to stay relevant in today’s digital world, you must enter your business into the social space. The latest digital report by We Are Social and Hootsuite suggests that there are now 2.8 billion active users on social media across the globe – so it’s never been more important to tap into its benefits. As consumption trends shift away from traditional media and towards digital and mobile, social is progressively regarded as the ultimate tool for promoting your brand, increasing public awareness
and nurturing a connection with your target market – but how do you achieve quick success? Follow these social media tips to get your business started on social.
Be picky with platforms
Consistency is vital to make social work for you, so don’t assume you have to create a profile across all platforms. Adding more than necessary will result in sporadic, inconsistent activity, so focus on the one or two most relevant platforms for your audience. So, which site will get the best results for your business? Here’s a quick guide on the main sites: Facebook: The most popular social media channel with the largest user base. Lets people connect with friends, share links, photos, videos, and events, join groups, and more. There are options for promoting content organically and through paid promotions.
younger users, older generations are starting to embrace it more and more. Unlike the others, Instagram is almost entirely mobile and, although there is a web version, you can’t take photos or create new posts on it. LinkedIn: The largest social media network for professionals. LinkedIn is a business-focused network where users add connections, share links, join groups, write recommendations, and search for connections by company, location, industry and skills. Paid-for advertising is also available. YouTube: A video-sharing platform with over a billion users, where people can view, upload, rate, share, subscribe to and comment on content.
Follow a plan
Twitter: Widely regarded as the best platform for engagement and growing more popular as a tool for social customer service. It’s fast-paced and allows reactivity. Users can post messages of up to 140 characters, share photos and videos, create custom lists, send direct messages, and more. Content can be promoted organically, with Twitter cards, or paid promotions.
Social media should be treated in the same way as any business function. There needs to be a purpose and you need to establish what your objectives are, plus what you want it to achieve for your brand. Do you need to boost sales, enhance brand awareness or increase engagement with your customers? Once you’ve set your goal, keep it in mind when planning your strategy. Take time to review competitor profiles, research relevant content and create a schedule of posts for each platform you are using. Think about broad campaigns that can be run via multiple platforms, like launching a promotion or competition, for example, rather than posting unsystematically. Brands can also take advantage of seasonality with content, so consider what’s coming up on the calendar and plan your posts to be relevant.
Instagram: A visual social media platform based entirely on photo and video posts. Although demographics veer towards
There is an abundance of tools that can help formulate your content and make regular posting much easier. If you create a
business profile on Facebook, you have access to free publishing tools and post insights, and for other platforms, SproutSocial, HootSuite and Buffer are examples of free-to-use tools that will help you to schedule content.
Stay social!
Building a following requires interaction, so while content planners and strategies are important, reacting to conversation and engaging with influencers is essential if you are to make your mark. Share, retweet and comment on posts that are relevant to your brand, join groups and follow the key players in your industry. It’s helpful to monitor what they are talking about on social media and think about how you can get involved in the chat – whether it’s offering an opinion or striking up a new conversation, building relationships with influencers can open doors to potential new customers.
Become a valuable contributor
One of the keys to success on social is commitment. Once you’ve identified who you are trying to reach and relevant platforms, you need to provide valuable content that resonates with your audience. Sharing your expertise or knowledge, giving solutions and providing valuable market insight will motivate your customers or potential clients and keep them engaged. However you choose to boost your social presence, preparation is the key – once the foundations are in place, you can then begin to have fun and build your following.

Jules Wyman is to deliver the Keynote Speech at this years East Yorkshire Business Expo Coach, Speaker, Author, Jules Wyman will share with the audience the secrets of her success and how local business people can apply the same principles to their own situations. How confident do you ‘really feel’ in your professional and personal life? Are you someone who relishes challenges, floats through life with ease, grabbing opportunities as they come. Or have you learnt to fake it? Pretending to feel confident whilst squirming on the inside. Perhaps you simply avoid situations that make you uncomfortable or afraid? Confidence is a soft skill that makes a hard impact on your
life regardless of whether you have it or not. Real confidence isn’t about faking it or acting ‘as if’. Real confidence comes from within. You don’t have to worry about what people think or what you have achieved. You can be resilient, assertive & say ‘no’. Sadly, ‘faking it’ is rife in professional life. On the outside you’ve got everything we are told will make us happy – a good job, money, house, car, education. Yet on the inside you are struggling & miserable. My quest for real confidence came as result of being a stressed out stage manager. If I was challenged or needed to speak in front of others, I froze on the inside & sometimes fled on the outside. It may not have looked that way as I got good at
pretending. But on the inside I was full of doubt. It was an exhausting way of living. I left my career burnt out & confused. I hit rock bottom. Over the next 12 years I took it on myself to discover the truth about confidence, self-belief & look deeper into the thinking brain. Understanding how to get to that ‘better’ place has literally taken me from hiding backstage to being on BBC Breakfast TV! I now coach & train professional women and smart men around the world to peel back the layers of pretence and live a truly confident life. I deliver interactive workshops, talks & keynotes and am author of “If We Can, You Can.” Jules will deliver her keynote speech ‘The Confident Leader; the insider skills to business success’ at 1:30pm Jane Gough of event organisers Dalton Spire Limited said: “I am totally delighted to have secured Jules (pictured above) as the keynote speaker for this years expo, she brings a wealth of marketing and business experience to the table as well as being an internationally renowned coach. I am sure that the local business community will benefit from what Jules has to share.” Jane also said: “I would also like to remind all businessmen and women
attending to bring plenty of business cards with them if they wish to get the most out of the event.” Scott Newsome (pictured above) is also doing a seminar entitled How to get the best from Linkedin Scott says “Want success on LinkedIn? Don’t know why you’re not getting any good leads from the platform? Join me at the east Yorkshire expo where we will dive into the secrets for LinkedIn success!” The 2017 East Yorkshire Business Expo takes place at the Mercure Grange Park Hotel at Willerby, Hull from 10am to 4pm on Wednesday 4th October and is free to attend. There is no need to book places on any of the seminars, speed networking sessions or the keynote speech, just arrive in plenty of time.

Four of the best starter classic cars
If you’re buying your first classic car,we’ve brought together four models which are reliable, easy to repair, and great to drive to help get you started. So, you’ve got a few thousand pounds burning a hole in your metaphorical pocket and you want to buy your first classic car. Well, let me be the first to offer my sincere congratulations! You’re just about to enter a world of fun – well, you are if you buy the right car. However the classic car scene encompasses a huge range of cars from vintage Austins built in the 1920s, through to 1990s Japanese supercars and navigating your way through the thousands of models on offer can be a bit of a minefield. So here are my four favourite starter classic cars; the only criterion to be on my list is that they have to be reliable, easy to repair, and great to drive. That most of them are good value too is a little bonus I’ve thrown in for you…
to rise in value by the hour. The range is as broad as it is interesting and you should buy on condition and not worry too much about a specific model or year.
The only thing you need to watch for is rust but there are plenty of rot-free examples out there for under £1,500. Double that sum gets you behind the wheel of an original, UKsupplied car (Japanese market grey-imports were marketed as the Eunos and are worth a bit less than a genuine UK car) with low-miles and a full service history. Either way you then just need to get in and drive, enjoying sublime handling in an enviably reliable package. Pay: £1,500-3,000
Austin Mini The original Mini is a masterpiece of packaging that manages to seat four in comfort while simultaneously out-handling all of its contemporaries, no matter how expensive or overtly sporting.
Mazda MX-5 The Mazda MX-5 MK1 (the one with the pop-up headlights) was produced between 1989 and 1998 and is available with either a 1.6-litre or 1.8-litre engine. The former is slower but revs better while the latter is a bit coarser but more muscular. All come with a simple but effective folding roof, doublewishbone suspension all round and a rear-wheel-drive chassis that shames some sports cars costing six figures.
To Contact
Rust is, unsurprisingly, the number one killer but if you buy a good example you’ll be able to treasure it for another couple of generations without having to spend too much more on upkeep. Oh, and when it’s cold you can bring it inside and let it warm itself by the fireside. Pay: £5,000-15,000
Morris Minor
Everyone has a Morris Minor memory, usually involving a sensible grandfather who used one to collect firewood and to take your grandmother shopping. It smelled of old engine oil and vinyl leather – cloth and pipe tobacco and will make you smile whenever you think about it – so why not create similar memories for your grandchildren by buying your own Moggie? There are plenty out there that have been uprated with more modern engines, gearboxes and braking systems; the Morris
Minor is one of the few classic cars for which originality isn’t very important. You’ll need to watch for rust (and woodworm if you fancy an estate, or Traveller in Morris-speak) but they’re otherwise bomb-proof and can be mended with an adjustable spanner and a screwdriver. Pay: £5,000-8,000
MGB In its day, the MGB represented freedom and youth and if you argued that it single-handedly changed the image of Great Britain from staid-and-sensible to swinging-and-sexy I probably wouldn’t argue. The MX-5 might be cheaper, faster, handle better and a million times more reliable, but if you’ve got your heart set on a period convertible, then the MGB is the one to choose. The models are too legion to list here but a manual drop-top with wire wheels and photographic evidence of extensive restoration could persuade me to get my cheque book out. After that you can pick and choose from a bewildering array of styling and tuning parts and the subsequent performance is limited only by the depth of your pockets and your willingness to get grease under your fingernails. Pay: £7,000-12,000
It also dominated the social scene throughout the Kingdom and won every racing championship it was eligible to compete in. Following years of neglect they are now bona fide classics that seem

Hence, this month Christmas is the topic! Let’s start with a shopping opportunity. Last year we had a 2 day tour to Harrogate it had lovely shops plus we stopped off at McArthur Glenn in York. Our guests loved it, they got off to such a good start buying Christmas gifts we are going again this October too. Christmas markets offer a lovely atmosphere and often unique ideas for gifts. In the UK Edinburgh is one of my favourite options. A stunning city at anytime of the year with so many museums, eateries plus every shop you could wish for. The buzzing atmosphere of the markets offer a real mix of Scotland, Germany & Belgium all rolled into one. Hollands biggest Christmas market is in the lovely town of Dordrecht. The market is offered for one weekend only each December and what a celebration. Museums open their doors for free, the great church should not be missed either. The market winds its way around the streets and you will come across a mix of live music too. We are visiting for a dash this year on Saturday when the shops are open so you can even enjoy a visit to C&A. Travelling via North Sea Ferries from Hull to Rotterdam you can top up your drinks cupboard and get wonderful gift packs in the perfumery. Turkey & Tinsel is always popular and great fun pre Christmas. There are many holidays available travelling by coach or self drive in your car. These are usually a Monday to Friday beginning with Christmas Eve and ending with New Year’s day. London is popular for a pre Christmas break. How about a 2 night weekend break with a top seat show, dinner at a top London Restaurant, 24 hour hop on hop off River boat ticket and more from only £199 per person twin/double share. Lapland flying from Humberside is now full, alternative airports are available or you can book early for 2018. You do need to book to fly from Humberside early, as seats are limited. Iceland in January has now sold out but I am delighted to say we have a new date 16th February 2018 - which would make a super gift for a loved one. Where ever in the world and when ever you wish to travel, we will be delighted to plan and book your adventure. Please remember to mention

Health & Wellbeing
Colourful healthy foods for wellbeing You’ve heard of the food pyramid, here’s the food rainbow - the colourful foods that will help you live longer and in better health.
“Eat colourful fruit and vegetables for good health” Red a source of vitamin C
While red wine has shown some benefits in increasing longevity, the real stars of the red part of the rainbow are fruits: specifically, tomatoes. Tomatoes are packed full of antioxidants and help protect against prostate cancer too... as if that weren’t enough, they’re also an excellent source of vitamin C and are fatfree and low in calories.
such as parsley or basil, cruciferous greens such as cabbage, broccoli or Brussels sprouts, you’re giving your body a fantastic push towards a longer life. Research from the University of Hawaii has shown that Japanese longevity can at least partly be attributed towards high consumption of fresh vegetables.
Make orange one of your five a day
Oranges are not the only fruit, or food, to ensure you get in your diet – carrots and sweet potatoes are rich in beta carotene which, once it’s converted to vitamin A in your bloodstream, helps fight cancer and heart disease, as well as ensuring your immune system is fighting fit.
The health benefits of onions
Onions steal the show in this part of the colour spectrum, providing you with heart-disease fighting compounds and working to keep your arteries strong and healthy. It’s not just about your heart, though, onions and their relative garlic, will help ward off viruses which will keep you fitter and healthier for longer.
Blue to help beat cancer Sweet and bursting with healthy antioxidants blueberries are a delicious way to try to extend your life. The more fruit you eat – not just blueberries but other fruit too – the greater the quantity of antioxidants in your
bloodstream, which means more protection against cancer and other diseases.
grapefruit is very healthy, it’s tough to beat pink salmon for its longevity-increasing properties.
Foods high in calcium
With its high content of omega-3 fats, which help protect against heart disease, high blood pressure and dementia, you should try to eat a serving of this kind of fish per week.
Calcium is essential if you want to avoid broken bones and crumbling teeth, and you’ll find lots of it in white products such as yogurt, cheese and milk. Eaten in moderation, dairy products will also give you essential protein, which you need for healthy bones, as well as immune function. The health benefits of grapefruit While deliciously fresh pink
Nuts keep you looking good
Okay, so it’s not in the rainbow, but you’d be doing yourself a disservice if you missed it out of your diet. Not only are nuts a fantastic source of healthy fats, protecting you against Alzheimer’s and other diseases, they’re also a good source of vitamin E which doesn’t just keep you living longer, it also keeps you looking good for longer.
Green vegetables are a super food
You can’t go wrong with this colour – be it leafy greens, herbs

Hull City Column
A week ago Hull City fans were relieved that some sort of a side had been pulled together by the end of the transfer window. Around twenty players have left since relegation and by September 1st eleven new players have come in.
The 4-0 victory over Bolton lead us into optimism but defeating one of the relegation favourites is a different kettle of fish to playing promotion contenders and the 5-0 rout at Derby and a 2-1 loss at Fulham has since brought despondency. Will this new side have potential to challenge for the play-offs or could this be another relegation team? I suppose we will only know when half a dozen newcomers from the past fortnight actually have time to gel with each other, the manager knows how best to use them and they can gain confidence from a few wins.
with replacements coming in for around £15 million. A small balance of £35 million! Added to this a potentially large profit being made last season due to the £100million TV payment, and this years predicted parachute payments does beg the question as where has the money gone? The club should have enough funds to buy a promotion team but for most of the close season talk was just of free transfers and loans, This begs the question of what the Allams are doing with the club? Do they have any ambition to sell the club as a going concern, which ultimately means a Premier League team or one with a fighting chance using either this years or next seasons parachute payment, or are they trying to recoup all of their loans through the tv cash and player sales?
East Stand Views...
State of confusion
realistic ticket offers and everyone can just concentrate on supporting our team.
As much as we’d like things to change for the better in the coming weeks it could be a long while until things change. Blackpool’s owners took the parachute money and just brought in free transfers. Thankfully some money has been spent but is it sufficient to halt the club’s decline.
Leonid Slutsky has a major task to rebuild the team. He has recruited Chelsea reserves, free transfers and Premier League reserves to add to the few remaining squad members such as Meyler, McGregor and Dawson. Only time will tell if this team will eventually compete against the likes of Derby and Sheffield Wednesday? The last promotion campaign was won by a Premier League squad who rarely played to their full potential but could Slutsky motivate a hungry new team this time instead.
To say Hull City fans are not a particularly happy bunch would be an understatement. The club blew a Premier League place by a succession of poor away performances and the Marco Silva revival ran out of steam with the capitulation to Sunderland in April. To make matters worse Silva walked, all the stars escaped for relatively small fees, Davies and Huddlestone preferred Derby, the loan players departed and basically a Premier League squad has gone for around £50 million

The only problem with the latter strategy is that the cupboard is now almost bare and once next years parachute money has gone there may be little else to take from the club. Gates could be down to 10,000 within the next two years and few saleable assets remain. If the Allams are aiming to sell the club on once they recoup their investments or loans made against Allamhouse then there is always the hope someone will take over the club for a more realistic fee of £10 - 20 million or so. Adam Pearson is still sniffing around for investors for example but will we ever see big investment again? Could we be reaching the end of our golden era from Deano’s Wembley winner until 2017. Would fans take this if it meant the club becomes part of the community again, we become Hull City AFC once again, youngsters and pensioners are welcomed once again with
One fly in the ointment could be Kamil Grosicki however. He has shown a distinct lack of interest in being here all season but for the pre deadline game against Bolton when for once he looked to be an international class winger. Since then he’s whinged about not gaining a move so will he buckle down and earn a move to one of the clubs allegedly chasing him or will he become a peripheral figure until January. Let’s just hope he sees sense and becomes a key figure in the new look team.
Words by Woody Mellor
East Stand Views...
The problem is September looks a very hard month for any new look team with games with Reading, Sunderland and Birmingham to follow, these are all big spenders or promotion candidates. We will see by the end of the month if we can challenge and if the last minute signings can stop the club’s downward trajectory.

Nic explains: “With just three months to Christmas, this fair is the perfect opportunity to start shopping for gifts. My advice is not to ask people for lists of what they want this year – it’s so satisfying to match a unique, one-of-a-kind gift to the perfect person! This year choose something that is unique, special and that they will treasure – something that will remind them of you. Also, surprises are so much more fun than getting what you asked for.

Gardening
Choosing the best low-maintenance shrubs for your garden Find out what low-maintenance shrubs to plant in your garden, including evergreens and options for shady gardens. If you’re not a keen gardener, or you find gardening difficult due to lack of time or perhaps health issues, then it’s worth thinking about planting low maintenance shrubs that just get on with it. You’re looking for slow-growing compact shrubs that can cope with very little attention, although some things are not completely maintenance-free. They may need a once a year trim, for instance.
What low-maintenance shrubs to plant
of stamens, can give out so much scent. The foliage is glossy and green and spear-shaped and this makes a small shrub, sometimes with black berries. Up to 2m if happy (6ft) but more liekly a four feet high. (1.2m) Aucuba japonica, the Japanese Laurel These are very underrated by gardeners, being easy to grow and quick to establish - even in deep shade. The usual form,
An evergreen presence Evergreen shrubs are very warming in winter when deciduous shrubs have dropped their leaves. Ilex × altaclerensis ‘Golden King’ A rounder-leaved holly that isn’t too prickly, with oval sage-green and dark-green leaves margined in rich mayonnaise. This berries fairly well and makes a lollipop-like roundel roundel in time, eventually making a large shrub some 4m x 4m (13 x 13ft). The bright foliage is good at casting some light in shady spots. Sarcococca confusa ‘Sweet Box’ A compact Chinese evergreen with winter-fragrant, creamwhite flowers that are so heavily scented you wonder how such HullMag.pdf small flowers, mere collections
‘Crotonifolia’, is garishly spotted in yellow but ‘Rozannie’ has brightgreen, jagged-edged foliage. Large red fruits can follow in this compact Japanese laurel. (Up to 1m/ 3ft)
For spring flowers Scented flowers matter at this time of the year - so position these in warm positions if you can and then the nectar and fragrance will flow. Viburnum x burkwoodii An easy to keep viburnum with semi-evergreen, shiny green foliage and domes of lily-scented white flowers held on splaying downy 1 stems.12/12/2016 This usually flowers12:30 in April and there are named forms

Lonicera x purpusii ‘Winter Beauty’ This can flower as early as January in some years, hence the name, and the cream-white flowers are scented. It is a scruffy bush in winter, a tangle of stems, but the early flowers can’;t be beaten either in the garden or in a vase.
For summer flowers Summer-flowering deciduous shrubs do need a bit of tweaking after flowering to encourage new wood. Normally a third of the wood, the darkest older wood,
Philadelphus ‘Belle Etoile’ Mock Orange Citrus-scented white flowers appear in summer and each fourpetalled white flower is smudged in damson-pink so they never look glacial. This variety id far less-vigorous than most and the flowers stare you in the face rather than nod downwards. (4ft/ 1.2m) Choisya × dewitteana ‘Aztec Pearl’ Mexican Orange Blossom Finely divided, rich-green evergreen foliage and fragrant almond-scented blush-white flowers in May (and often in late summer too) on an elegantly restrained shrub. Flowers better in warm positions. (2.5m/ 7ft) Ceanothus ‘Puget Blue’ Californian lilac For a warm garden only and best near a sheltered wall. The small crinkled dark-green leaves are topped with dense clusters of dark-blue flowers - but it must have a shletered site. Harsh winds scorch the foliage and cold winters diminish it. (3m/ 9ft)

Viburnum x bodnanatense ‘Dawn’ This is a large upright shrub, so put this at the back and it will begin to flower in November on bare stems, smelling heavily of hyacinths, and then continue in fits and starts whenever the weather is warm enough in winter. It will often have a final flourish in March., as the leaves appear. ‘Dawn’ is a selected form with pinker flowers.

Gardening Weigela ‘Bristol Ruby’ The almost black buds, clusters of wine-red trumpet-shaped flowers and dark, sultry foliage make this a dramatic addition. (1.5m/ 5ft)
For shady gardens Hydrangea paniculata ‘Limelight’ A shade lover that produces cream-white conical heads in late-summer and autumn. These fade beautifully into autumn, producing lime-green flowerheads, and the flowers can be dried. There are others that have larger flowers, but this one’s beautifully propoprtioned. (Up to 1.5m/ 5ft) Fuchsia ‘Mrs Popple’ (below right) This is a hardy fuchsia with red and purple flowers of substance and it’s very good in shadier positions. It will need a cut back to the lowest shooting buds in spring -once the worst of the winter is over. (1m/ 3ft)
How to plant Start by clearing your garden, or some of it, and level it and then cover it with black, heavy duty membrane to suppress weeds. Landscapers will be very used to doing this, if it’s too tough for you. September and March are the best planting months. Arrange your shrubs in suitable places, making allowances for their eventual size, and then make a cross-like cut into the membrane and plant through it. Cover up the membrane with a bark mulch and do choose a good bark product, because if you go down the cheap route you’ll get unsightly painted wood chips and lots of weed seeds.
Physocarpus opulifolius ‘Diabolo’ Small shrubs with three-lobed leaves, small pink-tinted creamy flowers followed by small brwonred berries. Principally grown for foliage though, and much better in semi-shade than full sun. There is also a golden form called ‘Dart’s Gold’. (1.5m/ 5ft at most)

THE LAST WORD
FIONA’S FOOD FOR THOUGHT
By Fiona Dwyer, broadcast journalist, PR & media consultant, slave to 2 children and a husband.
Back to school – already!
Why is it that at the beginning of the school holidays, the long 6 weeks looms ahead of us, seemingly without end? Then, we blink and it’s time to go back to school! It happens every year so I’m not sure why I’m so surprised. Yet here we are again at the beginning of a new academic year. The children have new uniform (incidentally this makes them very happy because I refuse to buy new uniform at the end of the summer term so trousers etc start looking a bit short!) and new shoes, new stationery and everything else they need for the autumn term. I suppose what I like best is that it’s a return to normality, a return to structured days and a return, dare I say it, to normal bedtimes. Of course, it’s also a return to me nagging to get homework done. I tell them the nagging is just part of being a parent and they’ll understand when they have children of their own! I am so turning in to my own mother!
What did we ever do without Google?
This is a point of minor hilarity for my children – the fact that when I was at school and, indeed, when I studied for my degree, the internet didn’t exist! Of course, nowadays, a quick search on Google and the information is there at your fingertips! When I remind the children how lucky they are because we didn’t have the internet and we had to write all our assignments by hand (and then write them up neatly before handing them in), the sheer horror on their faces is truly comical. With information so easy to gather now, I do wonder how we managed it. All I can say is, it may have taken longer but it does mean that in the event of a technology breakdown or a zombie apocalypse, I’ll still know how to find things out.
Quotes to ponder
The first comes from Aristotle and is appropriate, I think, for this time of year. “Educating the mind without educating the heart is no education at all.” The second is just one I like! “If we’re not meant to have midnight snacks, why is there a light in the fridge?”
