Welcome & Contents
Hello Readers,
Welcome to this months edition of HULLMAG. I hope that you are all still finding the time to enjoy some of the many exciting events and happenings in Hull and the surrounding area with all that is happening during the City of Culture year. We have some great competitions in this edition with tickets to see Slade at the Welly Club and the Dancing On Ice - Live Tour 2018 at The Fly DSA Arena in Sheffield. The Hull City column is doom and gloom I’m afraid! This is not what we would have hoped for at the begining of the season - in what should have been a push for an automatic return to the Premiership. We do still have plenty of time to stabilize the ship and avoid getting drawn into a relegation battle - but things must change both on and off the pitch! We have some wide and varied articles in the magazine this month that will hopefully keep you entertained, informed and motivated - these include articles on Top Interior Trends of 2017, Travel: Hot Spots for 2018, Health & Wellbeing - which looks at visiting the doctor - and I know we all are guilty of sometimes wasting our doctors time with something that we should have dealt with ourselves but I do urge you all to ensure that if you really do think you may have something more serious to act quickly and visit your GP - it is better to be safe than sorry and don’t be afraid to ask a close friend or relative to accompany you if you need that extra support. Ignoring symptoms and putting things off can only make matters worse. As I say to my husband (who is a typical bloke) - the doctor has seen it all before so put your embarrassment to one side and make an appointment!

Top Ten 1 Interior Trends of 2017 Here our Interior Design advisor Gaynor Preston Routledge looks at the top design trends of this year.. 1 Going Grey
Grey kitchens (everything from a pale dove grey to a much bolder and darker slate) have been popping up with more frequency. It’s not going to edge white out of the top spot anytime soon, but grey adds a distinctiveness and character to kitchens that’s still quiet, and works with stainless appliances and chrome fixtures.
2 Pretty Lanterns
Functional pendants such as schoolhouse or globe lights are easy to clean and suit the industrial trend that’s been gaining momentum. But there’s
2
something to be said about a jewel-like fixture, such as these faceted lanterns, that make a kitchen feel special.
3 Open Shelving On Graphic Tile
Fully tiled walls in graphic patterns are a huge trend, so if you commit to this eye-catching look, you don’t want to cover it with uppers. Open shelving is fresh and modern, and a strong trend on its own.
4
4 Standout Range Hoods
Hardworking professional grade appliances have reigned supreme for years, but lately
3 there is a shift towards something more decorative. When a standout stove is center stage in a kitchen, it demands a range hood with equal star billing. This cobalt version trimmed in copper doesn’t disappoint. Continued on page 8

Warm metal finishes are an instant update. Not only do brass pendants and trim on the range hood make all the marble
and the dove grey cabinetry in this kitchen by designer Allison Wilson feel warm, they add a seriously luxe look to a sculptural taps and hardware. Continued on page 10

5 Inlaid Tile Carpets
5
Carpets add color and pattern to kitchens, but an easy-care tile in an ornate pattern can be a great stand in. This version is inset into the plank floor so the wood
could continue throughout the main level. The “rug also serves a practical purpose, since this spot gets the most traffic.

House & Home 7 Dramatic Pantries
Pantries are attractive additions to potential homebuyers, so try turning a broom closet or nook into a bespoke pantry to showcase everyday essentials. Amp it up by painting the interior in a contrasting color, or choosing a bold tile or patterned wallpaper for the back wall.
7
8 Sculpted Islands
Treat the island like the gem it is by faceting the contours. Designer Nam Dang-Mitchell clad the entire outer face of this kitchen island in Calacatta Gold marble, and tilted the gables. We wanted it to be monolithic, like it was carved from a block of marble, she says.
9 Built-In Bars
If frequent entertaining is totally within your wheelhouse, a fullservice bar in the kitchen makes mixology second nature. Add a dynamic wallpaper, such as this pretty ikat, along with a practical mix of open and closed storage, and an array of eye-catching glassware.

10
10 Jointed Pendants
Pendants, especially in a matte black finish, offer a hit of hip Brooklyn chic to kitchens, and they are adjustable. This version is a bold punctuation mark that doesn’t get lost against a graphic tile wall.

Christmas Shopping Hints & Tips
Eight ways to control Christmas spending An eight-step guide to help you cut your spending at Christmas. Christmas can be a wonderful time - but for most people it can be the most expensive. Older people and the unemployed on fixed incomes can find the celebrations particularly trying, and getting caught in the trap of spending more than they can afford is distressing for people of limited means. So, how can you avoid the Christmas spending trap? Here are eight ways to keep spending under control: 1. Make a Christmas spending list In fact, make two. Make one list of the people you need to buy present for, and another for food. Have a budget for each. Take your list with you whenever you go out, and avoid the mistake of shopping like a demented magpie and ending up with three gifts for one person and nothing for someone else. According the Money Advice Service we spent nearly £2.4bn on food, drink or presents last year that eventually went to waste – because they were unused, unneeded or unwanted. This equates to an average spend of £28 per person on discarded food and drink. Thirty-seven per cent of people surveyed said they received presents which they didn’t use, with an average value of £54.
2. Research before you start spending at Christmas Do some research online on how far your budget will stretch if your gift recipients haven’t given you hints about what they would like, and apportion your funds accordingly. The same goes for food shopping. It is all too easy to go round the supermarket filling your trolley with Christmas goodies that you think you ought to “have in”. The shops will be open on Boxing Day and, in some areas, on Christmas Day itself. Resist the temptation to hoard food as if for a siege. 3. Avoid over-spending on ‘surprise’ visitors at Christmas Cater for any entertaining that you know you are going to do. Add a box of biscuits for casual callers and forget the extra mince pies, nuts and brandy butter than no one actually likes. How many people are likely to call at your home unannounced and expect to have a fully catered service? Could the answer be “none”?
The biscuits can be your safety net if you are really nervous about the neighbours dropping in - and a treat for you in the New Year if no one comes round unexpectedly. 4. Be wary of gift vouchers when spending at Christmas If the shop or store chain collapses, holders of vouchers could be left out of pocket as they become unsecured creditors and bankruptcy administrators are not usually obliged to honour payment. If you must buy a voucher make sure it is one offered by several – unlinked – retailers, so if one goes out of business the voucher can be spent at another one. If you receive a voucher as a gift, spend it as soon as possible. 5. Shop with a credit card for more protection If you use a credit card you are protected by Section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act if the retailer defaults. You also have different rights if you pay with a debit card which in many circumstances are superior to paying with cash or a prepaid card.
6. Pay your credit card bill in full Don’t use paying with a credit card as an excuse to overspend. According to the Money Advice Service (MAS), four million people are still paying off their credit card bills from last Christmas. Credit cards are useful for consumer protection and for budgeting, but if you overspend they are the route to a debt spiral. 7. Never take out a payday loan to pay for Christmas If taking on credit card debt that you could have difficulty repaying is bad, then taking out a payday loan is worse. MAS found that 1.4 million UK adults will rely on payday loans this Christmas. Don’t be one of them. 8. Be wary of fraud when spending at Christmas Christmas is a time for giving – and a time for taking by unscrupulous fraudsters. When buying online buy only from the genuine websites of reputable retailers. If you find a deal that looks too good to be true it probably is.

Free parking in city centre multi-storeys this Christmas Hull City Council is offering free parking in its two multi-storey car parks on Saturdays and Sundays, and extended opening during late night shopping on Thursdays leading up to Christmas and the New Year. Shoppers and visitors will be able to park in George Street and Pryme Street multi-storey car parks for free every weekend between Saturday 2 until Sunday 31 December, and extended opening between 7 - 9.30pm on Thursday nights. During the festive period both George Street and Pryme Street car parks will be open from 7am on Saturday morning until Monday evening at 7pm continuously, allowing motorists to park their cars for free over the two-day weekend. Councillor Alan Clark, Portfolio Holder for Streetscene, said: “We hope by suspending the charges to over 1,000 car parking spaces in the run-up to Christmas and the New Year by offering free parking on weekends, it will have a knock on effect and boost trade in local shops and encourage families to find somewhere quick, easy and accessible to park to do their shopping in the city centre.” Kathryn Shillito, city centre manager for Hull Bid: “I’m delighted that Hull City

A Little Bit of Fun
Figure it out.
I’ve been accused of being both a deep thinker and a airhead with entirely too much time on my hands. Either way, I do spend a lot of time asking the age old question... WHY? l Why do we press harder on a remote control when we know the batteries are almost dead? l Why do banks charge a fee on ‘insufficient funds’ when they already know there’s not enough money? l Why does someone believe you when you say there are four billion stars but they have to check when you say the paint is still wet? l Why doesn’t Tarzan have a beard? l Why does Superman stop bullets with his chest, but ducks when you throw a gun at him?
WHY?
l Whose idea was it to put an ‘S’ in the word ‘lisp’? l If people evolved from apes, why are there still apes? l Why is it that no matter what color bubble bath you use, the bubbles are always white? l Is there ever a day that mattresses are not on sale? l Why do people constantly return to the refrigerator with hopes that something new to eat will have materialised? l Why do people keep running over a piece of string a dozen times with their vacuum cleaner, then reach down, pick it up, examine it, then put it back down to give the vacuum one more chance? l Why is it that no plastic bag will open from the end on your first try? l How do those dead bugs get into those enclosed light fixtures? l When we’re in the supermarket and someone rams our ankle with a shopping trolley then apologizes for doing so, why do we say, ‘It’s all right?’ Well, it isn’t all right, so why don’t we say, ‘That really hurt. Why don’t you watch where you’re going?’ l Why is it that whenever you try to catch something that’s falling off the table you always manage to knock something else over? l In winter, why do we try to keep the house as warm as it was in summer when we complained about the heat? l How come you never hear father-in-law jokes? l And finally...How do thermos flasks know how to keep cold drinks cold and hot drinks hot?
Those are the questions........ ..I’m still looking for the answers!!! Please remember to mention
when calling our advertisers. Thank you.
Travel
Escorted
holidays for everyone
With so many choices to suit all ages... Escorted holidays and tours are available all over the world and allow you to travel with the security that there is a tour manager on hand to help point you in the right direction when needed. E.g an example of a city break to Krakow. Great for all ages, a lively spot but offering many sights for culture seekers. You will probably want to visit Auschwitz & Birkenau, a guided tour of the city would be handy so that you know your way around and for good measure lets include a visit to the Castle district of Wawel, one of Europe’s most striking royal residences. To ensure none of your precious time is wasted on arrival you enjoy included transfers along with your experienced tour manager offering you tips and useful information about the City. Prices vary on your choice of departure airport but flying from a Northern airport in 2018 from £429 per person twin sharing enjoying the service, security and inclusions of the above sights why would you wish to go it alone? Included entrance fees to sights and attractions save time when you enter with a group. Rather than line up in the queue your tour manager will have this in hand for you to enter on arrival. I know those of you who have travelled on my own tours always appreciate this benefit. A good example is Rome. The Sistine Chapel is difficult and time consuming to enter as an individual but with a tour you skip the line. When trying to fit as many sights as possible into your holiday this saves you valuable time. Lets now look at a couple of Myths? Touring is for older people? Not at all. The options are endless with many companies offering specialised touring for under 35’s plus there are great family options. E.g. Trek America has an average age of 43, and will create lasting memories that you could never imagine creating by travelling around under your own steam. Changing hotels? Is necessary on countrywide adventures where great distances are travelled. Many tours can also be offered based in a single hotel and then taking visits out most days of your stay. Of course it is your holiday and it is never compulsory to tag along if you wish to relax or choose to do something different. Multi City tours generally require a change per city. If you enjoy making the most of the destination you are visiting, then booking a tour will give you the best experience. We have 1000’s of options covering luxury hotels to camping and adventures travelling by all modes of transport. Where ever in the world presses your buttons from Antarctica to the Arctic, the east to the west, my team & I look forward to being of service and your bookings are always financially protected. Roy Woodcock’s
that because the fizz is low in sulphites, imbibers are less likely to get a hangover from it.
I’m dreaming of a blue Christmas...
“We’ve all had that shocking wine hangover. This is sometimes attributed to the sulphite preservatives used in wine to keep them fresher for longer. Generally, organic wine producers use a lower level of sulphites in the production process, which means they are less likely to contribute to hangovers,” said a spokesman for Lidl.
World of Wine
Elvis Presley may have been ahead of his time by 60 years when he released “Blue Christmas” in 1957, for the rather startling news of late has concerned blue fizz being produced in time for the festive season. This most unlikely of trends has emerged with the launch of a sparkling wine called Eden. It’s made from Chardonnay grapes from Provence and is medium sweet with 38g/l of sugar added. Selling for £45 a bottle, it is not cheap but follows on from other blue sparklers launched earlier this year. In May, Italian company Saracini Wines introduced Blumond, a seven per cent by alcohol “wine” made from a blend of Prosecco, blue curaçao and peach while in August English entrepreneur
Chris Arbery launched a blue “Cava” in the UK called Skyfall. Described as fresh and crisp, Skyfall is made in Sant Sadurni d’Anoia in Barcelona using only natural ingredients, combining four grapes: Macabeu, Parellada, Xarel-lo and Chardonnay. Each bottle is aged for three years, turned by hand, with a blend of natural flower and fruit extracts added towards the end of the production process to create the turquoise hue. Labelled by hand, it has an ABV of 12 per cent. Like Eden, this blue fizz doesn’t come cheap and is currently selling for 39.99 a bottle on the Skyfall website (www.skyfalluk. co.uk) And should you want to try Eden for your very own blue Christmas then that, too, can be bought online via www.sparklingeden. com Me? I think I’ll stick to all things traditional. So, I won’t be investing, either, in what Lidl describes as a “hangoverfree” Prosecco launched last month. Their Organic Prosecco Spumante, which is said to boast “bright aromas of pear and white peach”, has gone on sale for £7.99. The retailer claims
Meanwhile, Aldi has announced that it will expand its alcohol range this month, stocking a chocolate-flavoured dessert wine with notes of “figs, toffee and caramel” in time for Christmas. The Rubis chocolate non-vintage wine uses a base of fortified Tempranillo, more commonly found in Rioja, and is infused with chocolate essence. It can be served at either room temperature or chilled over ice, according to the winemaker’s website. The wine, which has flavours of “raisins, figs, dates, toffee and caramel,” has proved popular with industry leaders. It won the Silver award in 2015’s International Wine and Spirits Competition and took the IWSC’s Silver award again last year. The fortified wine, which has a deep ruby colour, has notes of “mocha with a hint of
freshly ground coffee beans, plus overtones of red fruit and cream,” according to the IWSC. “Flavours of raspberry and cherry come forth on the mid palate, giving way to notes of creamy milk chocolate. Climaxing with a lingering a luxurious and silky finish.” The unique Tempranillo has received positive reviews from retailers. The Whiskey Exchange describes the drink as “a very offthe-wall alternative to Port”. While Rubis’ dessert wine is priced at around £13 online, Aldi will sell the bottles for £9.99. The company said the drink “would make the perfect end to a festive feast”. * As we approac Christmas you might like to try this recipe for mulled wine. Most recipes are variations on a theme but this one calls for: Bottle of red wine (Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinotage or Carménère would work well), 60g/2oz demerara sugar, 1 cinnamon stick, grated nutmeg, an orange halved, dried bay leaf and 60ml/2fl oz of sloe or damson gin or port (optional). Put the wine in a saucepan with the orange, sugar, bay leaf and the spices. Heat gently until the sugar has dissolved. Taste to see if you want the wine sweeter, and add more sugar to taste. Take off the heat and stir in the added alcohol if you are using it. Strain into heatproof glasses and serve at once.

Over 700 children tell the world about Hull
Over 700 young people from every secondary school in the city performed at the Royal Albert Hall on Wednesday 15 November as one of only three massed ensembles to be part of the three day Music for Youth Proms. This prestigious event was a great opportunity to perform the piece ‘Swerving East,’ showcasing the city’s many talented young musicians, singers and dancers and celebrating the city’s year as the UK City of Culture. Musically the piece takes its inspiration from the work of Hull’s renowned poet Phillip Larkin, ‘Here’, which describes the city and the surrounding area with its ‘grain
scattered streets, barge crowded water’ and ‘luminously peopled air’. It has been composed by Tom Lawrence, who works for the Hull Music Service as a percussion teacher but also holds a PhD in composition. His brief was to create a piece of music which reflects and celebrates the musical talents of the young people of Hull. There will be roughly 300 instrumentalists and 400 singers performing all trained and rehearsed by Hull Music Service staff supported by school music teachers. Councillor Phil Webster, Hull City Council Portfolio Holder for Learning, Skills and Safeguarding Children, said: “I would like to congratulate all the young people who were part of this incredible performance. Their hardwork,
commitment and dedication are all a credit to themselves and the city. My thanks go out to everyone at the council’s Hull Music Service for making this happen and giving all the young people the chance to be part of this, celebrating the best young musical talent that the UK has to offer.” Chris Maynard, Head of the Hull Music Service at Hull City
Council, said: “This is by far the most complicated, involved and ambitious project ever undertaken by the Hull Music Service but the opportunity to perform in a Music for Youth Prom at the Royal Albert Hall was worth all the hard work. We hope that this will have provided an unforgettable, once in a lifetime experience for the young people.”

When should you see your doctor? Coughs, colds and feeling under the weather is common during autumn and winter, but some symptoms could be a sign of something more sinister. It’s OK to bring someone with you to a GP appointment for support. Public Health England’s ‘Be Clear on Cancer’ campaign urges people to more aware of their body and the symptoms they are experiencing. Getting out of breath doing things you used to be able to do, or having a cough that has lasted for three weeks or more, could be a sign of lung disease, including lung cancer. Breathlessness can also be a sign of heart disease. Those experiencing these symptoms should book an appointment with their GP to get it checked out. Public Health England has created a list of 10 top tips to help you book your GP appointment today:
1. Pay attention to your body. Symptoms, and particularly those that persist, are your body’s way of telling you that something might be wrong 2. It’s understandable to be worried or embarrassed about some types of symptoms, but don’t let this stop you making a GP appointment. Your GP is trained to deal with whatever ailment is worrying you 3. Remember, you’re not wasting anyone’s time by getting your symptoms checked out. Seeing your doctor early could save your life as early detection can make it more treatable. 4. Be honest with the receptionist when you make your appointment. They are bound by confidentiality and are trained to recognise the importance of your symptoms
Embroidery By Dezign
to give you an appropriate appointment. 5. Prepare for your appointment by writing a list about your symptoms: when they started, how often they occur and what makes them better or worse. Also write down any questions you want to ask your GP. 6. It’s ok to bring someone with you to a GP appointment for support. This can be a family member or friend. 7. During the appointment, the GP may ask you a lot of questions, but this is so they can determine your diagnosis. Also, don’t be afraid to ask your own questions if you don’t understand something. 8. Ask your doctor about what will happen next. There may be a follow-up appointment or referral for tests.
Ask what the tests are for and how or when you will get the results. 9. If your doctor recommends that you book follow up appointments, it’s very important make this with the receptionist and attend the appointments. It’s important to see your doctor again if your symptoms persist and are concerning you. 10. If a medical condition is diagnosed, ask about your treatment options. You can discuss with your doctor what will be best for you, any risk of side effects and how long the treatment will take. Make your plans now for next years colourful autumn garden
have large, shiny fruit that hang in bunches like clusters of Carmen Miranda-style earrings. Malus ‘John Downie’ has orangey red fruit, M. ‘Butterball’, golden yellow crab apples, and Malus pumila ‘Cowichan’ is smothered with bright red fruit.
These fixes for dull and bare patches in the garden will give you a stunning autumn garden. Fiery foliage from a Japanese maple or acer can really perk up an autumn garden If you have not planted it with bulbs, perennials or shrubs prized for their late season foliage or berries, the autumn garden can be a complete letdown after the excesses of summer. However, it is possible to create a head-turning spectacle, or at least adding a bit more interest, by plugging some gaps in your borders with plants. Head to your local garden centre or nursery and you will find plenty of specimens that will quickly establish when planted in the warm, moist soil. Not only will these plants light up your space for the next few weeks, but they will continue to give you a fantastic display of autumn colour for many years to come.
Fiery foliage
Many trees and shrubs are spectacular in autumn and now is the best time to buy them as you can see exactly what they look HullMag.pdf like. Among the best for fiery foliage
Gardening
Bulbs in flower
are graceful Japanese maples or acers. This large tribe includes Acer palmatum var. dissectum ‘Seiryu’, whose bright green leaves change to orange-yellow with splashes of red, blazing red
Best berries
Berries hang pendulously from branches of trees in autumn and will continue to provide colour well into winter, so long as the birds do not take them all first. Perhaps the classiest berry bearing trees are sorbus. There are many to choose from; Sorbus hupehensis has white berries blushed with pink, while Sorbus vilmorinii produces clusters of pinkish berries. Another worth checking out is S. ‘Joseph Rock’ (left), its berries are a sunny yellow. All of the trees I have mentioned are ideal in a small garden and as a bonus, have great autumn foliage. Crab apples are more exuberant than sorbus. Many of these trees
Bulbous plants, such as nerines and schizostylis, are perfect for filling a few gaps in borders and will keep going well into November – plant in well drained soil and give them a sunny spot. Dainty cyclamen can be planted at the front of beds, in grass or under trees - many have specific requirements, but C.hederifolium is fairly easy going and simple to grow.
Late-flowering perennials
Although most of us want our garden to look at its best over summer, it is worth planting a few perennials to keep the show going on for longer.Japanese anemones, Verbena bonariensis, cimicifuga, several varieties of rudbeckia and some sanguisorba are still looking good. When buying, choose plants that still have flowers to come, rather than those whose blooms are starting to fade. This way you will have plenty of colour to look forward to.
Acer palmatum ‘Ôsakazuki’ and A.palmatum ‘Shindeshôjô’ – its pale green foliage turns vivid orange. Slow growing, these trees are perfect in tiny gardens and can even be grown in large containers. Other trees to consider include Amelanchier lamarkii, for its blazing orange and red oval leaves, and Cercidiphyllum japonicum. 1 Known 12/12/2016 as katsura tree, its12:30 glowing yellow foliage fills the garden air with a candy floss scent.

Give your garden shed a winter tidy Give some TLC to your shed, pots and tools in preparation for the year ahead. If your garden shed is anything like mine, it descends into chaos as a busy spring turns into a frantic summer followed by an equally mad autumn. Winter is the time to have a grand sort-out followed by a trip to the local tip. That will give you the space to restock your twine, labels, compost, seed trays and pens while the garden centres are groaning with garden sundries. Once reorganised, you’ll be more than ready for the year ahead. Make sure you’ve got plenty of time, and arm yourself with lots of large black plastic sacks, damp cleaning cloths, a dustpan and brush and the vacuum cleaner (with extension lead if necessary).
Get your pots in order
Start with the seed trays and throw anything out that’s damaged. Those spared will need a brush out and wipe, then they can be stacked neatly, but only keep a realistic number. Next, examine your plastic pots and select the most useful sizes such as 9cm round ones (for potting up cuttings) and larger ones for potting up perennials. Keep a few deep pots, ideal for sowing sweet peas, then recycle the rest (your local garden centre may have a recycling scheme if your council does not). Check your terracotta pots and discard any broken ones, saving a few shards if you use them for drainage. If the weather is mild,

get into the shed, make it hard for them to carry off equipment such as lawnmowers and chainsaws. Use heavy-duty chain and a padlock to link items together: a lawnmower, a heavy barbecue and a bundle of garden chairs chained together will be awkward to drag away.
lay the good ones upside down on the lawn and allow the rain to clean them for you. Don’t let them get frosted in severe cold snaps, though. Then vacuum the whole interior of your shed (to prevent bugs and slugs from climbing straight back inside your cleaned pots) and restack everything neatly. Pots can lie on their sides and trays can be stacked on newly swept shelves.
Improve your shed security Paul Stoner of Sharp’s World of Wood shares his tips for keeping your garden shed secure from intruders l Before you start looking at locks and alarms for your garden shed, inspect the building itself. Is the roof in good shape, for example? Thieves have been known to lift off a flimsy roof to get at tools inside.
secure – they have very little of the metal hoop exposed, which makes them much less vulnerable to someone wielding a pair of bolt cutters. l If your shed has a window, make it harder for thieves to find out what’s inside by obscuring it – cover it on the inside with bubblewrap, horticultural fleece or even an old net curtain. Fit laminated glass in the window – it’s harder to break – or fit security mesh across the outside.
Paul’s tips for keeping tools and equipment in your shed secure l If someone does manage to
l Does your garden shed have a concrete base? You could install anchor bolts and use a chain and padlock to secure equipment stored in your shed. l Always put away tools, equipment and bikes – anything of any value – when you aren’t using them. Be aware that burglars may find some garden tools handy for breaking into the house. l Mark equipment with your postcode – use a UV pen, paint the details on or scratch them onto metal handles. l In summer it can be a pain to have to put garden furniture away every night, check whether your insurance policy covers items left out.
l Make sure the shed door is in good condition – there’s no point strengthening hinges and fitting padlocks if it’s easy enough to kick in a rotting door panel. l Use clutch-head screws or coach screws on the shed door hinges and on the hasp and latch – these types of screws can’t be easily unscrewed. Fit two padlocks on the door: one about a third of the way down from the top, the other a similar distance from the bottom of the door. l Choose closed-shackle padlocks to make the shed door more

THE LASTCity WORD Hull
Oh dear where do we begin? It is a pretty miserable time supporting Hull City at the moment. It is probably more miserable for Leonid Slutsky at the moment as he is very likely to be sacked following the 3-2 capitulation to Bristol City. It is as miserable on the field as it is in the stands. There is a lack of spirit everywhere, no-one gets excited in the week leading to matches, no excitement walking to the matches and no sense of anticipation prior to kick-off.. Let’s see what happens today? Will we manage a win, will we put three passes together, will our opponents possess any ability themselves and will we concede in the last five minutes? Not a great deal of pride or passion, just a sense of foreboding.. Can it get any worse? Today proved it can. 2-0 up and lose 3-2 to another limited team who at least showed that hard work and challenging for headers wins points in this division.
wanted till the final days of the transfer market. However the team comprises at least half a dozen internationals, players of Premier League experience and others who have shown ability elsewhere as both Toral and Irvine were players of the year at other Championship teams. Overall none of the summer signings have made much of an impression besides the returning Fraizer Campbell so is it a lack of quality, being played in the wrong position or a lack of confidence? Some people do question if Slutsky wanted some of the signings especially as he couldn’t decide on Irvines best position a few weeks ago. Has

know that we fail under pressure and struggle to hold it together beyond the 70th minute mark. I’ve lost track now but probably ten points have been dropped through mistakes within the final ten minutes.
Today was the game for Slutsky to try and save his job but his time here has now probably come to an end. The standard of this division is poor yet City have only won four games out of nineteen, six without a victory and the defence is one of the worst in the division. To make matters worse we are one of the divisions top scorers and Jarrod Bown has reached double figures already. Even two goals cannot guarantee a result. The fingers are pointing at Slutsky. There are lots of other factors hindering his team development but on paper this team should be far better than 20th in the division. The team was put together late in the transfer window for the second consecutive summer and they were the odds and sods no-one else

he ever watched him prior to the signing or was this something to do with the head of recruitment or Vice Chairman?. Most of the Championship were apparently linked with Irvine over the previous six months so he must have stood out more at Burton than he has here so far. The side lacks organisation, a coherent game plan and leaders. We are stuck with the same 6-7 defenders till January but they always seem to falter under pressure, some are very inexperienced, we make the same mistakes, are poor man markers and lack pace especially Michael Dawson. Do they work on any of these issues in training as things continue game after game and opponents also
The club announced a profit of £35 million last year through Sky money and sale of Harry Maguire. If more money was invested would Steve Bruce have remained and the club not waste the first six months on Mike Phelan and his last minute panic buys? The debt to Allamhouse was announced as £60 million in the annual accounts. Subsequent summer transfer deals will have knocked this down to around £50 million. It remains to be seen if there will be further sales in January to knock down this figure rather than reinvestment? Surely any new manager would want a transfer kitty or the opportunity to trade in the new year rather than a budget for a few loans like last January. The parachute payment is probably just paying the wages and costs of running the stadium especially with gates so low. The bottom line is that no one is likely to buy the club in its current state, no one will spend £50 million and all we have to look forward to is escaping relegation but the club is currently on the road to oblivion. Clueless owners, clueless manager, poor squad, half full stadium, losing fans by the week and the Sky funding runs out next year. Things can only get better, surely? Here’s hoping for a Merry Christmas!
Words by Woody Mellor

Slutsky is likely to go within the week but as ever ultimate responsibility lies elsewhere. The Premier League team evaporated within weeks of his arrival, some were sold whilst others jumped ship and escaped through transfer clauses. Replacements have not really been made so far but only time will tell if a new manager such as Nigel Adkins will get them organised, motivated and playing to something like their potential?

EXPANDING FESTIVAL EXPANDS AGAIN! The region’s most eclectic music festival is on a roll ... having already announced that Stage4Beverley had responded to demand by adding an extra day for its 2018 festival, the organisers have done it again, with news that the event will now stretch over five days. The festival will once again be based at Beverley’s East Riding Theatre, taking over the theatre from February 14th to the 18th, with a line-up bridging diverse musical genres, from folk to blues, jazz to classical, Americana to world music and more. Artistic director Chris Wade says she and her fellow directors have been overwhelmed by the levels of interest in the event, both from artists and the public. “We set out earlier this year to create a weekend event that would offer something different for Beverley and East Yorkshire at a time when people are looking for something to brighten up the dark, winter months.
“February’s festival was such a success that audiences and artists alike asked to do more, so I’m pleased to say that having earlier announced the 2018 festival would start on the Thursday night and run for four days, we’ve been offered an opportunity to present renowned poet, the “Bard of Barnsley”, Ian McMillan alongside Olympic composer Luke Carver Goss. It means we have added a fifth day to put on their show, which we expect to be a sell-out.” “Words, Music, Glee and Delight” featuring Ian McMillan and Luke Carver Goss (pictured bottom right) will now launch the festival on Wednesday February

THE LAST WORD
FIONA’S FOOD FOR THOUGHT
By Fiona Dwyer, broadcast journalist, PR & media consultant, slave to 2 children and a husband.
CHRISTMAS COUNTDOWN Yes it’s not long now and, unlike last year, I haven’t started my Christmas shopping yet. I must do that soon otherwise the festive season will be upon me and I will be making a mad dash around the shops – or I may have more luck getting organised with internet shopping because I can do that after hours! I need a list! Lists make everything better! I still plan to write my Christmas cards this month though and stamp them up ready to post in December. It’s hard to believe it’s this time of year already. And remember that the most important thing is to make time for your children, family, friends and loved ones. At the end of the day, they are all that matter. As Jesse Jackson once said: “Your children need your presence more than your presents.”
PADDINGTON 2 AT LAST! I can’t wait to see the next instalment of Paddington at the cinema. It’s been a long time coming and it’s being released on 10th November. It’s all the same cast plus Hugh Grant and Brendan Gleeson (Mad-Eye Moody from the Harry Potter films). You just know it’s going to be brilliant! So don’t forget your cinema snacks. Remember: “A wise bear always keeps a marmalade sandwich in his hat in case of emergency.”
QUOTES TO CONSIDER IN THE RUN UP TO CHRISTMAS “The most important things in life aren’t things.” ~ Anthony J. D’Angelo “Christmas is doing a little something extra for someone.” – Charles M. Schulz (creator of Charlie Brown)
