The Bard of Holderness – the last protest singer? Well he may not sing like an X Factor contestant (with fancy pitch changing gizmos) or dance around like a boy band member but the ‘Bard of Holderness’ or rather Chris Jordan has soul. He doesn’t have a voice like Smokey Robinson but he sings from his soul, his life, his history and the things which affect him. Something genuine, not artificial froth from the Simon Cowell world of clones. Chris is more of a punky folk singer than soul singer and could be compared to Billy Bragg though for a younger generation there are few comparisons, except possibly Frank Turner. Where are the protest singers of 2013? Sadly there are few despite the country being probably in a worse situation than the late 70’s- 80’s which launched a generation of protest bands or 3 chord wonders from every city. Chris developed many of his songs whilst busking on the streets of Hull or performing at a range of acoustic and folk venues over the past year and he is learning his craft in the time honoured tradition of playing live and learning from the audience response to his material.

To Contact

Chris has now produced two albums over the past year and few topics escape his attention from fracking to food banks, zero hour contracts to the post office sell-off, Hull locking the gates to King Charles in 1642 and even the story of a Hull criminal who escaped the noose despite murdering three women a century ago. It’s not all politics and he also has more reflective songs in the folk tradition, ‘If we really believe’ is also one of the most uplifting positive songs I have heard for years. Maybe he was influenced by hippies in his earlier years!?. The Bard of Holderness has released two albums ‘Think Right, Do Right’ and ‘Rebel! Both of which can be downloaded and purchased from Chris via his new website www.bardofholderness.co.uk . There is also a YouTube channel ‘Bardofholderness’ which features the majority of his songs. Chris will be appearing at several festivals over the summer is also a regular at Keyingham Folk Club, Raine Folk Club, the Minerva or found busking in the streets of Hull.

It’s All About You

MOTIVATIONAL ADVICE FROM AWARD-WINNING BUSINESS COACH PAM FEATHERSTONE

HOW TO STAY MOTIVATED

Once you have decided what you want to achieve - whether it’s to get fitter, lose weight, stop smoking, improve your golf swing, be more organised (the list is endless!) – how do you keep up the momentum after the initial buzz and excitement at changing an aspect of your life has dulled? First of all, don’t have false expectations – and by that, I mean, don’t expect that what you want to achieve is going to happen overnight. Be realistic.

Make a public statement or a personal promise. I find that outside pressure is usually far more powerful than internal motivation to start with. At some point along the way, though, it’s human nature to move from that external motivation to internal because you can see and fell the benefits of what you’re doing. So make the leap today. Set a goal, make a plan and decide how you want to congratulate yourself. What’s stopping you? Let’s do it!

You don’t have to instantly make a massive change. One small step is all it takes. If you want to get fitter, you might decide to take the stairs instead of the lift, get off the bus a stop earlier, take a 20 minute walk every day.

To contact Pam please call her on 01482 227060 or 07540 888016. Alternatively, you can email her at pam@ coachpam.co.uk

Set yourself mini targets along the way so that you have a sense of achievement as you reach each one. And then celebrate every time you hit your target. It’s also a good idea to have a “big” treat in mind for when you do achieve your ultimate goal. Having a vision of what you will look like, how you will feel and so on, will help keep you motivated.

Tour de France

Le Grand Départ comes to Yorkshire... ‘Road passable to vehicles Stop No snow Stop’. Alphonse Steines must have been quaking when he dispatched this scurrilous telegram to his boss, the formidable Henri Desgrange. He had been asked to inspect the route of the Col de Tourmalet and report on his findings. Accounts differ as to whether the telegram was sent before or during the 1910 Tour de France but the effect was that Desgrange sent his riders into one of the bleakest ascents ever known in Tour history. To Steines eternal ignominy, he had not even ascended the Col. Weary and distraught, Octave Lapize and his 1910 Tour compatriots eventually scaled the daunting Col d’Aubisque on their steel bikes, having ridden through snow and energysapping quagmire roads on the Col de Tourmalet, in sub-zero temperatures. He spotted Desgrange and according to legend screamed ‘Vous êtes des assassins!’ Often regarded as the father of the Tour, although some sources place Géo Lefèvre as the true originator of the concept, Desgrange was a formidable character, described in some circles as a despot, sadist and misogynist. Yet even he could not have envisaged, when he started the 1914 Tour with a pistol shot, that hours later Archduke Ferdinand would be assassinated in Sarajevo by Gavrilo Princip, so unleashing the slaughter of the First World War.

have been reserved for the teams, staff, press and tour personnel and as they sit and reflect on the day’s events, 12 million spectators along the full route will make the journey home having being enthralled and entertained by the superhuman heroics of these awe inspiring riders.

One hundred years on, the Tour de France has survived two world wars and countless scandals to become one of the world’s greatest sporting events. Since 1954, when the Tour first started in the Netherlands, the first time it had opened outside France, it has been customary to share its delights with other nations. This year is England’s turn and more importantly the Tour graces Yorkshire with two stages taking place in Leeds-Harrogate (05/07/2014) and York-Sheffield (06/07/2014) before heading south for the final stage in this country. In the weeks following the Yorkshire Grand Départ a worldwide television audience of 3.5billion people will watch the unfolding and sometimes confusing events culminating in the final stage to Paris. The entire race will cover approximately 3,500 kms over 21 days. Each evening, 1,200 hotel rooms will

There is an undeniable romance surrounding the Tour but commerce has always been to the fore since Desgrange waved off the first Tour de France in 1903 in order to promote his newspaper, L’Auto. That race, won by Maurice Garin after his main rival, Hippolyte Accouturier, was debilitated by spiked lemonade, was a resounding success for L’Auto. Ever since, companies have vied to present their brands to billions of the world’s watching viewers. In 2007, when the Tour last visited these shores, an estimated £88m was drawn into the south-east economy. Seven years on, the Tour has a different perspective for the UK’s cycling masses. The successes of Wiggins, Froome and Cavendish have helped to transform the sport in this country but we must never forget the stalwarts who have maintained the sport in the years when it was regarded as an eccentricity. Local clubs such as Hull Thursday Road Club and, across the River Humber, Barton Wheelers celebrate 106 and 81years of existence respectively and deserve recognition for the flame they have never let fade. So what can we expect from the Tour? Possibly not a lot as a spectator. Last year I spent five hours stood on a grassy knoll opposite the finish line in St. Malo, with my partner Nadine and cycling hero Gary, only to see the riders pass in a flash between the shoulder blades of two tall spectators. With average speeds of 40.3 kph, the 2013 Tour’s 198 riders were little more than a blur for even the best placed spectators. So anyone heading off to Yorkshire’s rugged slopes this year should temper their expectations and just soak in the atmosphere – ultimately that is what the event is about for a spectator.

Tour de France Many viewers new to the sport will wonder at the races-within-races and the seemingly unfathomable tactics. My advice is keep focused on the simple dimensions of the race and the rest will follow. The Grand Contender (GC) leader will wear the famed yellow jersey whilst the best placed young rider in the race dons a white shirt. Red polka dots on a white shirt signifies the King of the Mountains and the Green jersey is fought over by the men of speed who accumulate points at staged sprints and finishes; expect Mark Cavendish to have his work cut out for him against the Teutonic, Marcel Kittel. Yorkshire’s ‘mountains’ are unlikely to tax the riders in the manner of the epic Alp or Pyrenean stages but beneath the benign names of hills such as The Buttertubs lurk unexpected challenges. Last year’s Tour of Britain saw expert climber Nairo Alexander Quintana Rojas wince at the steepness of some of that course’s climbs and Yorkshire will prove more of a challenge than many riders are expecting. British hopes will be mainly pinned on Team Sky. At the time of press, the team has not yet been selected but injury to Ian Stannard has strengthened the prospects of Tour winner and 2014 Tour of California winner, Sir Bradley Wiggins, racing alongside reigning champion Chris Froome. The rivalry between these two riders has occupied much media speculation but there is no doubt that Froome, whose legend is now written after ‘that’ ascent of Mont Ventoux, will need more than Ritchie Porte’s support if he is to conquer the threats of the youthful Quintana, a rejuvenated Alberto Contador and Italys Vincenzo Nibali. This promises to be a gripping Tour from the moment the riders leave the centre of Leeds and the wily Wiggins (he will burn approximately 9,000 calories per day) will not miss an opportunity to say goodbye in style if, as expected, this is his last Tour de France.

at least he has faced his demons and rebuilt his dignity in the process. It seems that stones are often tossed the way of cycling yet overlooked so easily in the sports of rugby, footballs and particularly athletics. Following WW1, the 1919 Tour de France was known as the ‘Tour of Hope but punishing stages such as the 290 miles from Metz to Dunkirk soon reconstituted the suffering that this enduring event was renowned for. None suffered more than Eugène Christophe, the first rider to wear the yellow jersey and lampooned as the ‘canary’ en route. Thirty minutes ahead of his nearest rival, he seemed a certain Tour winner until his cycle’s forks broke. By the time he repaired them his challenge was over and Belgium’s Lambot swept through to victory. So much for ‘hope and charity’. Perhaps after securing the Grand Départ from Leeds, Welcome to Yorkshire should christen this year’s event as the Tour of Faith. Having worked so hard for the county they need our support and a hearty welcome for the Tour de France to God’s Own County. Words: Ian Mowforth

How to look your best this summer. With summer just around the corner many people start to think (panic) about wearing less; whether that’s shorts and vest or your bikini you know that soon there will more of you on show. Here are my 5 top tips for feeling fabulous and losing those extra pounds in the run up to summer.

1. Balance your blood sugar –whether you prefer to eat little and often or to stick to 3 main meals your body needs order and routine. If we stick to regular meal patterns our bodies can use glucagon (the opposite to insulin) to maintain blood glucose balance reducing cravings and over eating. 2. Include protein with all meals and snacks – choose meat, fish, eggs, nuts, seeds, tofu or beans. Protein is slowly digested within the body helping us to feel fuller for longer. Furthermore; protein has a large number of uses within the body so it is less likely to be stored as fat. 3. Up your veggies – vegetables are low in calories high in fibre. Filling up on veggies will help you to stay fuller for longer (and keep you regular – which is important for a flat stomach).

5. Do regular weight bearing exercise – weight bearing exercise increases lean tissue (muscle). By increasing lean tissue we can burn more calories even when we are in active helping us to achieve and maintain a healthy weight and shape. Lisa Hutson Dip ION FdSc mBANT CNHC is a registered nutritional therapist with a passion for food, Pilates and real life. To contact Lisa please call 07952 489027 or email Lisa@Realisationlifestyle.co.uk

4. Reduce your sugar intake – sugar increases the bodies need for insulin and increases the amount of fat stored within the body. When looking to reduce sugar start by reducing the obvious – sweets, cakes biscuits and then reduce refined carbohydrates which are also high in hidden sugars such as breads, pasta, processed foods and potatoes. Cutting back on sugar will not only help you to lose weight but will also improve your skin and reduce your chances of developing wrinkles.

TIPS FOR PAYING OFF YOUR MORTGAGE QUICKLY A mortgage-free home is the ultimate dream for many, and it’s possible to achieve if you put your mind to it. Not only does early repayment make you financially secure and free up your money for other things, it also makes your house cheaper in the long run. Here are five tips to help you. Save as large a deposit as you can
This requires thinking ahead, but if you save as much money as possible before taking the plunge and buying a house you’ll have less to pay off in the long run. Taking longer to save up will stop you paying extra interest and make the total repayment quicker. Choose the right mortgage
Take your time choosing your mortgage and read the small print, as some mortgages come with hidden costs on top of the expected interest rates. Ask your mortgage broker about loan establishment fees, arrangement fees, monthly fees and any extra charges before you commit. Make extra payments
The simplest way to quickly pay off your mortgage is to just pay more. If you find you have extra cash floating around at the end of the month, or are prepared to make some sacrifices, then you can put the extra towards your mortgage. However, some lenders will charge you for paying off your mortgage early, so check with them before you go ahead.

Things to do in July

Water thoroughly once or twice a week rather than little and often - this encourages plants to put down roots in search of water rather than coming up to the surface. Remember, though, that containers and hanging baskets need watering every day and sometimes even twice a day if it is hot and windy. For recently planted large shrubs or trees, leave a hose trickling around the base for an hour. The same goes for established plants in very dry periods - pay particular attention to camellias, rhododendrons, azaleas and hydrangeas (pictured right) which will abort next season’s flowers if they get too dry. Mulch around the roots when moist to help avoid this. Recently planted hedges are best watered with a trickle hose (a length of old hose punctured with little holes) left running for an hour or so. Ensure trees or shrubs planted in the last couple of years on lawns or in areas of rough grass have a circle of clear earth around them - this must be kept clear or grass will prevent essential moisture getting through. Mulching with bark or compost will help. Water is a precious commodity - instigate good practices such as using kitchen and bath water (as long as it is

neither too dirty, greasy nor full of detergent) for watering, collect rainwater in butts (available from the centre) and investigate ways to recycle water for your irrigation. Avoid using tap water for lime-hating plants such as camellias, rhododendrons and azaleas - they will not thank you for it! The key to successful planting, whether it be a shrub, tree, perennial or bedding plant is to water in well. Soak the rootball in a bucket until no air bubbles come to the surface, dig the planting hole, fill with water and allow to drain away. Place the plant in the hole, fill with soil, firm gently and water well with a watering can - this will give the plant a huge advantage over one planted with a dry rootball in a dry hole and watered only on the surface. Hoe beds and borders to get rid of annual weeds, like bitter cress and chickweed. If it’s dry, attack perennial weeds like ground elder and the like with systemic weed killer painted onto the leaves and trail tips of bindweed into jam jars full of the same. Remember systemic weed killers are indiscriminate and will kill anything they contact. If you don’t have time to do this, at least cut the culprits down to prevent them from setting seed. Keep your pond topped up with fresh water - a build up of algae in warm weather can be toxic, if not fatal, for animals.

Summer Holiday Tips:

Fifty percent of Britons are aiming to make 2014 the year to take a dream holiday or go travelling, and there are lots of advantages to planning, especially if you’re on a budget.

The early bird catches the worm

Getting an early start on your holiday booking can make it easier to find a bargain. For a start, you’ve got a huge range of destinations and options to choose from, plus there are usually plenty of offers to entice you. You can also secure most packages with a deposit, giving you months to save up (don’t forget to allow for spending money too). For lastminute deals, six weeks before departure is the optimum time to get your booking in, as that’s when airlines usually start to discount seats they haven’t yet sold.

Be a fly-by-night

Flexibility can really lower the cost. Do you really need to go in July or August? If you can go either side of these months, or wait until October half-term, you are likely to get a better deal compared to travelling in peak season. If you can only go in high summer, the last two weeks of the school holidays tend to be cheaper. And if you’re booking your own flights, the time and day of the week can have a surprising impact on your budget, with Tuesday afternoon apparently the best day to travel.

Stay young and invincible

Seeing the continent by train is no longer restricted to gapyear students, and Europe-wide train passes are available to all these days, opening up the continent to low-cost travel for all. Good hotels deals can be available if you time your booking to coincide with the availability of online discount codes, while many modern youth hostels have the comfort of decent hotels and are even family friendly. Of course, travelling through Euro-landscapes on glitzy overnight trains can save a packet on hotel rooms too.

Mind how you pay

While many credit cards charge up to 3% per transaction if you use them abroad, some others are specifically aimed at being suited more to spending in other countries, often offering 0% foreign purchase fees. If you do get one of those cards though, make sure you pay the bill off in full when the bill arrives. It’s also advisable to let your lender know you are going abroad, so as to prime them in case it raises suspicion when they see you make large purchases in duty free!

Supporting Our Local Economy

You’re Hired! Would you like to work for one of Hull’s Top Five largest private employers? This month HullMag talks to Lynne Stabler, Recruitment Manager at ResQ. Q When was the company formed and how many people do you currently employ?

Res-Q is one of the leading outsourcing companies in the region. The company was established in 2005, since then we have grown to employ over 550 colleagues and operate from two service centres. This has been achieved by supporting and developing each of our employees throughout every stage of their career, as well as listening to the needs of our people and keeping our promises.

We are very much an investor in people and have many exciting opportunities across the board. We are looking for enthusiastic likeminded people portraying a fantastic attitude and personality with a view to building a rewarding career. You will receive full product training, development, coaching and support which in turn will help you progress and reach your goals. Q Call centres have over recent times had a bad reputation, so what makes you different?

Res-Q is not a stereotypical call centre, far from it. Unlike call centre’s that you may have seen on TV. Res-Q represents some of the leading brands in the UK, which means that we have to represent our clients as they would represent themselves. That said we have built a culture that is inclusive, professional, rewarding and fun.

Q Where abouts are you based?

l

Investment in skills and training

Res-Q operates from two locations in the city centre, Criterion House on George Street and Anchor House in The Maltings. Both locations are easy to get to and on major public transport routes.

l

We aim to offer our colleagues a career and a lifestyle not simply a job.

Q I understand the company has gone through a large growth period recently, which means that you are now looking to recruit new members of staff. Can you tell us a bit about the work available, qualifications and experience required and career progression?

Q Where do you see ResQ in the next two years?

l Supporting individuals to maximize their aspirations

Res-Q continues to expand and achieve and in doing so we want to be recognized as an employer of choice in the city. If you want to be part of something amazing then call us today!

 This is our promise: • to provide an excellent wage plus commission, which could mean realistic earnings of £420 per week • that earning commission is achievable • to provide you with the very best training delivered by our accredited team • to pay you in full each week without delay • genuine prospects for promotion

East Stand Views...

This has been our greatest ever season despite the back drop of the Hull Tigers issue throughout this period. Hopefully that may be over but who knows? Particularly significant were the statements from the Allam’s that their cheque book may be closed following the FA decision. Steve Bruce is currently linked with a range of high profile transfer targets so is the cheque book closed, have they been persuaded to change their minds, is sponsorship or investment being secured or will they just plough on with the name change for another season? According to the close season transfer rumours we are linked with Micah Richards, Adam Johnson, Robert Snodgrass, Michael Dawson, Danny Rose, Niklas Bendtner and loads of others on a daily basis during the media’s silly season. This is besides making the priority signing of Jake Livermore, though for a realistic fee. It would appear that another £20 million may be speculated but is that being financed by the club or yet more money added to the Allam loan? It does seem so bizarre that the end of season blip cost the club £5million in Sky money by dropping from 12th

to 16th position. Disappointing but the players minds were elsewhere. Hopefully we won’t rue this next season if the transfer kitty runs out. The other Football League clubs can only dream of such additional funding. Suppose that’s the big league we play in nowadays.

Who knows who will be joining us? It’s all very positive if it comes true and we will be strengthened for what may be a difficult second season. Provided we proceed through two qualifying rounds from the end of July City could be playing Thursday evening fixtures in the Europa league and Sunday afternoon Premier league fixtures. That may be a dozen extra games without even adding League Cup or FA Cup fixtures. Comparable clubs such as Swansea or Birmingham struggled with these commitments and we do not wish to run out of steam by February or March next season. Back in 1998 we were supporting the entire football league from 92nd spot. Our only ambition was to stay in the league and get more points than the mighty Scarborough. Boothferry Park was falling down and within months we were even locked out of it. Against such a backdrop you can only have such pride from our first ever FA Cup

S-T-R-E-T-C-H-Mark’s

Final. We were there just to make up the numbers going by the media and the appalling coverage by ITV yet for well over an hour the majority of the world-wide audience were probably backing the under-dog, this unknown team from the unknown city were leading the mighty Arsenal and the minutes were slowly ticking away ‘til the mighty cup upset.

We put on an immense show and noone could ever have dreamt of being 2-0 up in eight minutes. It was pretty much a defensive effort for two hours but we so nearly got there. Despite Arsenal having most of the play they were running out of ideas besides falling down in agony every time they attempted to get past a City player. This brings me to the TV coverage the sycophants of ITV spent two hours willing Arsenal to win so good old Arsene gets his trophy. It’s a long wait 9 years, what about 110 years waiting? Once upon a time there was such a thing called the cup romance and the day of the under dog. I don’t think this occurs to the likes of Chiles and Tyldesley at ITV.

It was also an immense performance from the fans. It can be so quiet at the KC for some games but for once we had the majority of the 25,000 fans on their feet and actually supporting the players. I cannot believe I have watched the FA Cup Final recording on TV with the sound of Hull City fans bellowing out. Not a big team, not Man Utd or Liverpool but Hull City AFC! Our club, our city, our fans loud and proud to an audience of 500 million people. Unbelievable. Such world-wide coverage and it didn’t require a name change! Roll on next year’s adventure.

Words by Woody Mellor

So how do we summarise Hull City’s season? I suppose ‘amazing adventure’ comes to mind. 12 months ago we were optimistic of survival but little did expect 6-0 victories, signing Tom Huddlestone, defeating Liverpool, spending £14 million on two strikers, being sat in comfortable mid-table till the final weeks, two players touted for England call-ups going to Wembley for a semi-final, winning a semi-final and leading in a cup final till the 71st minute. If that wasn’t enough we will also be playing in Europe too!

Assisted Areas: Increased Financial Support for Hull Businesses Helping Local Businesses to Grow

Councillor Martin Mancey, Hull City Council Portfolio Giving Back to the Holder with responsibility for economic regeneration Local Community reports that increased Working Together for a financial help is soon to become Brighter Future available to Hull businesses thanks to a new UK map for granting state aid that will support investment and drive sustainable economic growth. The latest map of wards eligible for Assisted Area status (2014-2020) has recently been approved by the European www.dropinforbusiness.org.uk Commission, defining the locations in which companies could be eligible for regional investment aid. Following lengthy negotiations, Hull has successfully retained Assisted Area status for all its previously held Assisted Areas, as well as gaining one further ward Bricknell. In recognition of the gain of the additional ward, Councillor John Fareham, Councillor for Bricknell

Ward, added: “I am delighted that Bricknell Ward has now been granted Assisted Area status and I am grateful to my colleagues at Wyke Area Committee for their ongoing support. This newly available financial aid will be a great help in our combined efforts to secure new jobs.”

Councillor Martin Mancey, Hull City Council Portfolio Holder with responsibility for economic regeneration, said: “This is welcome news following an extensive consultation process. Assisted Area status will ensure that Hull businesses benefit from additional financial resources through EU Regional Aid and programmes such as the Regional Growth Fund and Enhanced Capital Allowances, which are available in our Enterprise Zones. Ultimately, this will help accelerate economic development and regeneration, creating much-needed jobs.”

HullMag: Keeping Trade Local

Women are smarter than men - it’s official Did you know? l UK diners are creating a ‘fast dining’ culture with two in five (41 per cent) now booking restaurants through mobiles and tablets. l Women are leading the trend, accounting for 61 per cent of bookings from smart devices, compared to just 39 per cent of men. l Two fifths (44 per cent) make reservations to a new restaurant for the first time through a mobile device.

And guess what? I seem to have a lot more time on my hands! Endlessly picking up, checking and putting down the phone must have been taking its toll on the minutes over the course of every day. I’m no Luddite - I love technology, it’s how I make my living - but is it possible that in amongst the glittery, shiny cleverness of it all, we sometimes forget who’s the boss? Happy Googling! “Old Googler”

steve@oldgoogler.com

l Brits spend an average of 11 minutes browsing the website before making their booking. l Two in five (41%) diners now booking restaurants through tablets or mobiles, compared to 7% in 2011, according to new research. The research, based on over 850,000 Bookatable users, was carried out in conjunction with the launch of the new Bookatable app to better understand the dining and restaurant booking behaviour of Britons.[source www. bookatable.com] There’s no doubt in my mind that the figures will be skewed towards London and the South East but where they lead the rest of us will surely be following. Frankly I’d like to think I’m taking a step in the other direction! Recently I’ve been trying to wean myself off the ‘always connected’ smart phone, after realising a week or two ago that the thing had virtually taken over my life! I’m clearly not on my own in that respect - enjoying a meal at Pasco’s in Cottingham the other night, I was amazed to see a couple enter the room, take a table and not pass a word to each other, apart from ordering the food and wine. Their entire evening was occupied by endless blips, beeps and keyboard taps - maybe they were whispering sweet nothings to each other via text or twitter, who knows what passes for communication these days? Not for me. Thanks but no thanks! Slowly but surely I am taking back the controls! Email is set to manual - Phone is OFF in meetings, public places, cars, at night and during mealtimes. It’s no longer so easy for me to wake with the alarm, just roll over and check my mail on the way out of bed! I’ve given up checking the screen last thing at night.

Cornucopia’s horn of plenty

Now in its third year Cornucopia is a family friendly festival that celebrates the changing of the season from summer into Autumn, Michaelmas Day falls on the 29th of September, which is near the Equinox marking the beginning of Autumn. The word Cornucopia means the ‘Horn of Plenty’, referring to the harvest of corn, fruit and vegetables something that has been celebrated throughout time. Our cornucopia’s horn of plenty is filled with music, theatre, comedy, art, food and ale – what better way to celebrate this age old tradition! This year the festival is moving to a new home, the beautiful Elizabethan Burton Constable Hall just outside the city of Hull. ‘The Animals and Friends’ headline on the opening day, Friday 26th Sept , celebrating their 50 years in the music business with such hits which include ‘House of the Rising Sun’, ‘Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood’ and ‘I’ve Got To Get Out of This Place’’. Big Country headline Saturday 27th Sept, delivering all the classic hits including ‘In a Big Country’, ‘Fields of Fire’, ‘Chance and Look Away’. This year’s line-up also includes Henry Priestman, Lynne Hanson, Sunjay Brayne and Hull’s own Lucy Marshall. The ‘Off the Road Stage’ is a new edition to Cornucopia Festival this year, with its own unique brand of cabaret, music, dance and comedy. The music is ‘Humber Beat’ throughout showcasing brilliant local bands and musicians including, ‘The Hillbilly Troope’, ‘The Happy Endings’, ‘Mighty and the Moon’, ‘Black Delta Movement’, ‘Quick Silver Kings’, ‘Young Jack’, ‘Emily Moulton’, ‘Street Urchin’, ‘Psychedelic Super Skiffle Band’, ‘Rosie and the Thorns’, ‘Beggars Bridge’, Neil Thomas and Ellie Pollard. All the main stages at the festival will be indoor but there are also some outdoor performance areas for comedy, theatre and dance. The festival village also hosts a selection of food and craft stalls, and the dedicated ‘Green’ area also contains vegan food, green craft and demonstrations. The festival is a weekend event with a camping and caravan site, but day visitors are also very welcome to come and enjoy the festivals relaxed family friendly unique atmosphere. FIONA’S FOOD FOR THOUGHT By Fiona Dwyer, broadcast journalist, PR & media consultant, slave to 2 children and a husband.

MIND YOUR MANNERS I get so frustrated by bad manners. Don’t you? It takes nothing to hold a door open for someone behind you, to smile and say thank you, to wave in acknowledgement when a car pulls in to let you go by, to apologise if you accidentally bump into someone. It’s polite! I’m sure you’ve experienced doing your weekly shop and a till operator in the supermarket insists on describing in detail what they did last night or what they’re planning to do at the weekend to another shop assistant. Doesn’t it drive you crazy?! Then when they give you the wrong change or they’ve put the same item through twice, whilst they are more than apologetic, I find myself saying (in my head!) “Well, if you’d been concentrating on what you were doing, it probably wouldn’t have happened!” Would it be rude if I said it out loud?! Anyway, my point is - be nice and be considerate. Come on – it’s not hard and good manners cost you nothing! RANDOM ACTS OF KINDNESS We’ve probably all heard about the concept Paying It Forward – performing a random act of kindness for the sole purpose of helping someone in need or cheering someone up. It’s a great model to live by and it’s really not hard to do. Too many people get caught up in their own lives and have tunnel vision about what’s going on around them. Just like you remember someone who has been really rude to you, you also remember the person who gave you a smile when you needed it most, helped you up when you tripped over, gave you a one pound coin for the supermarket trolley because you had no change, paid for your coffee when you realised your purse was in your other handbag. It doesn’t have to be much – but these small acts of kindness make the whole world a much nicer place to live in. ALREADY SOLD OUT! Did you manage to get a ticket for Hull’s Women of Achievement Awards in November? I really hope so because, as I mentioned last time, tickets usually sell out quickly – and I was right! They sold out in the first week and there’s now a waiting list in case anyone drops out. There’s still time, though, to nominate an amazing woman you know. Or perhaps you are that amazing woman?! The awards, organised by Women in Business, celebrate women from all walks of life who have gone above and beyond the norm to achieve their goals whilst inspiring others to fulfil their own potential. So please visit www. womeninbusinesshull.co.uk to check out all the different categories and to find out how to enter yourself or nominate an extraordinary woman you know.
