Winter Motoring

Keeping your vehicle well maintained is really important all year round, but doubly so in winter. For example, worn tyres won’t hold the road in wet conditions as well as those with with a good, deep tread. Make sure all exterior lights are working correctly and that windscreen wiper blades are in good condition. Check the oil, coolant and washer fluid levels. And, don’t leave home on that long trip over lonely country roads without enough fuel for the journey. The following five checks will help ensure your vehicle is ready for winter: Note: Before carrying out these checks, make sure your vehicle is cold and parked on a flat, level surface. If unsure about your vehicle please contact the garages in this feature who are all there to help you. Car Battery - Remember, if your car has not been used for a period of time, the battery may need charging before you come to use it. Coolant - ensure that coolant is between the minimum and maximum markers. It is also important that there is sufficient anti-freeze in the coolant. If you’re uncertain, have a look at your handbook or get a local garage to check the strength. Anti-freeze is cheap but damage from a frozen engine can be

very expensive to put right. Tyres - check tyre condition to see if there is adequate tread. Look for damage such as splits or bulges and check the pressure. If you live in an area particulary at risk of snow consider purchasing winter tyres or snow socks which give you greater traction and control. Screenwash - make sure you have enough screenwash and that the concentration is suitable for cold conditions. Not all screenwash is the same so look for the temperature it protects down to. You should be looking for protection down to down to -10 degrees C and if you live in areas subject to the greatest extremes of weather, down to -20 degrees C. If you don’t use a good quality screenwash there is a danger your washer pump could freeze which might lead to the fuse blowing and your wipers not working because they are often on the same fuse. Wiper blades - check wiper blades for damage and replace if necessary. When wiper blades become frozen to glass it is very easy to damage them when freeing them up. When the temperature drops and your car won’t start it’s more often than not an issue with your car battery. Cold, damp weather can play havoc on batteries as vehicle electrical systems have to work a lot harder at this time of year and starter motors require all the current they can get to start the engine on these cold mornings. With more and more vehicle equipment demanding electricity this is more of a problem than ever. We recommend checking and, if needs be, charging your battery at least once a week during the winter months, particularly if it is more than three years old. Cold temperatures affect the chemical process inside the battery that produces and stores electricity, effectively slowing it down and reducing the battery’s ability to hold the charge. Older, weaker batteries will typically already have reduced performance and cold temperatures will often drastically reduce this further, to the point where the battery will discharge or go flat very quickly. And, sometimes it can be difficult just getting into your car. These two tips could save you some much-needed time: Use a little silicone-based furniture polish on the rubber door seals – it helps prevent doors getting stuck when it freezes. It’s best to apply with a cloth so you don’t spray polish on to the vehicle’s paintwork. If locks are frozen, try warming your key. You could also inject the lock with the appropriate anti-freeze or spray it with WD40.

Google searches its way to Hull Hull has today welcomed the announcement by Arts Council England that the city will host its Digital Utopias conference, which will provide an opportunity for cultural organisations and practitioners from across the UK to discuss new ways of working and the new tools that help make this possible. Labelled as a trailblazer event for the UK Hull City of Culture 2017 and sponsored by Google, the event will inspire and provoke debate about how new technologies are enabling creativity across the arts. The conference will feature leading practitioners in the field describing the latest approaches to curating, collecting and creating work across artforms

Councillor Bayes, Portfolio Holder for City of Culture 2017 said: “This is fantastic news for our city and we look forward to holding such a prestigious event. “Alongside promoting arts and culture throughout the city we want to drive the business sector forward and combine it with forward-thinking technology ensuring Hull will improve its international connectivity through a number of world-class events, conferences and developments.” Digital Utopias is curated by Abandon Normal Devices for Arts Council England and will taking place in January at Hull Truck Theatre. For more information please visit: http://www.artscouncil. org.uk/jobs-and-conferences/conferences/digital-utopias/

Delegates will be on hand to talk to specialists in the field about the opportunities and challenges new technologies bring to creative work. Chief Executive of the Culture Company Martin Green said: “Hull is moving in the right direction in terms of building on the ambition for the city to fully realise its potential as a growing digital sector. “We already have a burgeoning cultural quarter around Humber Street and this will be an ideal opportunity for key representatives to meet some of the culture creators and digitally creative businesses in our city. “This part of our wider plan to establish Hull as a growing hub in digital technologies in the build up to the UK City of Culture 2017.”

Christmas

I’m dreaming of a tight Christmas… It’s that time of year when the mounting hope for snow reaches its peak (if you’re under the age of ten, that is). But what with the pressure to make the presents mount up too, we’ve compiled some tips on how to save the pennies for that snow-induced heating bill... and a merry Christmas all round!

9. Recycle an outfit: rather than splashing out on a new party dress, customise an old one: remove sleeves, make it shorter, add a belt and some sequins... Or swap with a friend; that way you’ll have something new without spending a penny. 10. Make candles: reuse leftover candles and tea lights to melt into new ones for thoughtful (and cheap!) presents or to adorn the house. You can make them even prettier with ribbon or by adding glitter to the wax.

1. Set yourself a budget: it’s tempting to ‘collect bits’ as and when you see them, but people tend to overspend as they forget what they’ve bought. Writing a list and setting aside a couple of dates on which to go Christmas-shopping will also help you stick to your budget.

If you’re struggling with debt or have money worries, check out capuk.org or call 0800 328 006 for more information; you don’t need to face it alone.

2. Be honest with your friends: tell them it’s been a tough year and suggest that, instead of presents, you all have a nice meal together where each person brings a dish. Quality time together is something money can’t buy. 3. Buy shared presents: if you have several children of similar age, consider buying a bigger present that they can all enjoy. And if you buy second-hand you could save hundreds of pounds. 4. Food saving stamps: in the lead up to Christmas, buying saving stamps are a great way to save up for your festive food. 5. Avoid the post box: why not save on stamps by hand-delivering cards to people in your area? Remember to keep the ones you get to recycle into handmade cards for next year. 6. Try own brand: supermarkets have come a long way in making own brand food that tastes as good as the named brands, and it’s plenty cheaper. 7. Agree to buy just for the kids: money is tight for everyone at the moment so most people you know will appreciate a deal like this. 8. Make chocolate truffles: these are quick, easy, and can be mass-produced whilst looking like you’ve put in loads of effort! It’s also a great activity to involve the kids in. Check out a simple recipe.

Christmas

Christmas Facts Santa Claus is based on a real person, St. Nikolas of Myra (also known as Nikolaos the Wonderworker, Bishop Saint Nicholas of Smyrna, and Nikolaos of Bari), who lived during the fourth century. Born in Patara (in modernday Turkey), he is the world’s most popular non-Biblical saint, and artists have portrayed him more often than any other saint except Mary. He is the patron saint of banking, pawnbroking, pirating, butchery, sailing, thievery, orphans, royalty, and New York City. Puritan Oliver Cromwell outlawed Christmas celebrations and carols in England from 1649-1660. The only celebrations allowed were sermons and prayers.

Christmas is a contraction of “Christ’s Mass,” which is derived from the Old English Cristes mæsse (first recorded in 1038). The letter “X” in Greek is the first letter of Christ, and “Xmas” has been used as an abbreviation for Christmas since the mid 1500s. Because of their pagan associations, both the holly (associated with the masculine principle) and the ivy (the feminine) and other green boughs in home decoration were banned by the sixth-century Christian Council of Braga. Ancient peoples, such as the Druids, considered mistletoe sacred because it remains green and bears fruit during the winter when all other plants appear to die. Druids would cut the plant with golden sickles and never let it touch the ground. They thought it had the power to cure infertility and nervous diseases and to ward off evil. A Yule log is an enormous log that is typically burned during the Twelve Days of Christmas (December 25-January 6). Some scholars suggest that the word yule means “revolution” or “wheel,” which symbolises the cyclical return of the sun. A burning log or its charred remains is said to offer health, fertility, and luck as well as the ability to ward off evil spirits. Evergreens (from the Old English word aefie meaning “always” and gowan meaning “to grow”) have been symbols of eternal life and rebirth since ancient times. The pagan use and worship of evergreen boughs and trees has evolved into the Christianised Christmas tree.

UP CYCLE SUCCESS Formed in April 2014, Gallery 1984 are enjoying their first year producing handmade wooden pieces for the home and garden. Made from 100% reclaimed wood, the products are proving to be popular, ‘upcycling’ is a huge craze currently and is showing no signs of slowing. “I guess it was Rich who came about the idea, after making a few pieces for his own home, he persuaded me that this kind of thing was really popular” remarked co-owner Ollie. After a little research and the discussions between the two lads they decided to set up in April 2014. “We initially started it out as a bit of a hobby without spending over the odds on machinery and tools” Rich recalls. “It soon became apparent that some of the items were already attracting interest from customers so we continued to assemble plenty of stock and pencilled in a few fairs to see how the products would sell to the public” added Rich.

“We are always looking for new products to assemble and the business is growing week by week; it’s an exciting time especially with Christmas approaching and the orders rolling in” remarked Ollie. “We are both very determined to ensure the business keeps growing but we are under no illusions it will take a lot of hard work” added Ollie. Based in East Yorkshire, Gallery 1984 have ventured across Yorkshire promoting the business at events such as the Yorkshire Show, Driffield Show and Beverley Vintage & Retro Fair as well as many others, “We are exploring how to promote the business to as wide an audience as possible and these events are great for networking and meeting new customers; without the support of Dodds (based in Bainton) and DMC Ltd some of these events wouldn’t have been possible so we are thankful to them and all the support we have received so far from various people” Ollie went on to add. Local People, Local Lives

‘A’ List Stars and Chip Spice This month HullMag catches up with local business woman and beautician to the stars, Lesley Wilks. HM: Where do you live? I live on Kingswood in Hull after moving here some 23 years ago from Sunderland so technically I have more of a Yorkshire passport than a North Eastern one! HM: Tell us about your family I have a wonderful husband, Steve who I have been with for 25 years who co-owns Bolo boutiques, we make such a great team as I am a very creative, ambitious person and he is very much a realist yet an incredible businessman so we bounce off each other really well. We have 2 sons Jordan 19, and Cody 14 so are kept extremely busy as a family. It’s a bit of a joke in our family as in my industry having a daughter into girly things would be amazing, and I am very often outnumbered with all the football and boy chat, (even the family dog is a male!) but I just borrow my friends and sisters girls when I need a break! HM: What do you like to do in your spare time? In my spare time (which isn’t that often) I love to go and visit my family and friends in the North East and have a night out up there, as well as catching up with friends here. These days a cosy night in watching TV with a take away is often a luxury! I sometimes go to the gym but admittedly am really bad at maintaining it due to work pressures, however I do try! HM: Name the one thing you couldn’t live without ? I couldn’t live without my husband or boys not to sound too corny, but I really couldn’t! They are my rock. Materialistically it has to be my mobile as I rely on it so much for my job! (oh and can I say lip gloss as well!?) HM: What is your favorite thing about Hull? My favourite thing about Hull has to be ‘chip spice”! When I moved here I couldn’t believe the different sayings and how things differed from the North East. My son’s friend has set up a company ‘SPICE IT’ which at 18 years old I think is unbelievable to have that vision and tap into a market that could become national-when I am working with celebrities we always have a banter about chip spice! They haven’t a clue and we forget it’s a HULL thing!

HM: We already know your business is based within the beauty industry but tell a little more about the work you do and how you got started? I specialise in Permanent Make up, Make up and Specialist Beauty Treatments such as an age reversal facial called A Lift, HD brows and LVL lashes. I wanted to do treatments for my clients that weren’t just like a regular salon, which is why I would rather focus on a few and be great at it rather than average in everything! My journey in this industry began when I was 14 and worked in a local salon back home on a Saturday for £7 a day! I attended college to do both hair and beauty and had a huge passion for this as well as make up. I then went on to work as a stylist for a large company for a while before landing my dream job with Schwarzkopf Professional. Looking after large salon groups from Scotland to Manchester I really enjoyed mentoring and building the business aspect of this for salons but equally missed being in the salon myself. After 10 very successful years with a great company and after having Jordan I decided to leave Schwarzkopf to be able to fulfill my ultimate dream of opening my own salon – this is when in Dec 1999 Lloyds hair was born! After quickly outgrowing the salon Steve and I wanted to have our own beauty alongside the hair and after a huge project of planning etc. we opened Colour Lounge in April 2013. Selling this last year was the turning point in my career as having doing some Business development for a beauty company Nouveau Beauty Group which have brands such as HD brows, Lashes, A Lift and ultimately Karen Betts and her Nouveau Contour permanent make up, I decided I wanted to go back to doing what I love best instead of running and owning a busy salon. This was the change in my life that has been the biggest but most satisfying for me as an individual and where I am today!

Lesley Wilks: Beautician to the Stars

WIN A LIFE CHANGING TREATMENT WITH LESLEY ON PAGE 32

HM: What’s the best thing about your job? The favourite part of my job is when I give someone their confidence back or make them feel special for even an hour! My permanent make up is an integral part of this and I love the way this can completely change someone’s life for them! Working from a small, private studio I love the fact that clients can come and feel comfortable with me and not have to worry about how they look or who sees them when they leave! It’s their little personal haven for a while! HM: You work with some celebrity clients, are you able to tell us who and how you met them? I met most of my celebrities by recommendation from others and by me being really normal and approachable with them I guess! Networking is a great thing and I always say ‘never burn your bridges with people’- if you are nice and professional with them, they are to you! All the celebrities I do now have become more like friends but that’s mainly due to the fact that I would always respect their privacy and trust as I would any client I do! My work now sees me travelling up and down the country doing treatments on celebrities such as most recently Melanie Sykes just before she went into the jungle, Kerry Katona and her wedding, Natasha Hamilton, Liz McClarlon, Jorgie Porter , Sam and Billie Faiers and the Hollyoaks cast to name but a few. However I treat everyone just the same as at the end of the day even celebrities are clients to me and I like to think I treat everyone the same no matter where you’re from or what you do!

Please remember to mention

HM: What are your plans for the future for your business? My plans for the future are to build up the clinic side of my permanent make up. I will always work from my base in Hull for my clients here, but I have started to do a few clinics one day a month in the North East, Leeds and Huddersfield. I have been asked to do some more in salons further south but that will be a natural progression. As of now clients have found me but I would love to do more local events now I have a settled base here again, so clients know what I do. I have recently qualified in my Masters HD brows which is the highest level you can offer so I am extremely excited about being able to offer that now to my clients, knowing that I am constantly investing in training myself! I have also set up a VIP glam squad wedding and events team alongside the very talented hairstylist Samuel Johnson. Clients can hire us on a daily rate for this and we can create a ‘pop up ‘ style salon offering everything with top people in the industry. This is what we did for Kerry at her wedding and it went down a treat! HM: If you were not doing what you do now, what would you like to do? If I wasn’t doing what I do now (and I was young again) I would love to do either presenting on a TV makeover show or being an event planner in Hollywood! Gosh, I would be lethal!! Visit www. Free parking in Hull city centre for Christmas shopping Hull City Council is supporting city centre businesses by offering free parking in three multi-storey car parks on Saturdays and Sundays leading up to Christmas and the New Year. Shoppers and visitors will be able to park in George Street, Osborne Street and Pryme Street multi-storey car parks for free every weekend between Saturday December 6 until January 3 2015. Councillor Martin Mancey, Portfolio Holder for Energy City and responsible for Parking, said: “We hope by suspending the charges to over 1,500 car parking spaces in the run-up to Christmas and the New Year will boost trade in local shops and encourage families to find somewhere quick, easy and accessible to park to do their shopping in the city centre.“

“Officers recommended that the cost of permits should be increased to £33 to fully cover operating costs, but in my view an overnight increase of this magnitude is unacceptable. On the other hand, it is unreasonable for other, often less well-off, residents who do not require permits to fully subsidise the costs for those that do. “I hope that most residents, both permit holders and others, will see this proposal as a reasonable compromise but the review will give residents their opportunity to have their say on the future of parking zones in their local area, ensuring that residents who wish to remain within a zone have preferential parking over non-residents. “Once the feedback is collated a final decision will then be made on the future of each zone.”

Opening hours for the multi-storey car parks are from 7am until 7pm, Monday – Saturday and 9am until 4pm on Sundays. On the three sites providing free parking on weekends, no ticket or purchase is required. For more information on Hull City Council’s car parks call 01482 300 300 or visit www.hullcc.gov.uk These arrangements are part of a wider review of parking policy and charges in the city, which will include consultation with residents about the future of their controlled parking zones. A £20 annual fee for administration of parking permits and enforcement within the zones is being proposed in areas outside of the city centre to contribute to the cost of managing the schemes. This equates to less than 50p per week.

However, the £20 fee will only be introduced where residents vote in favour of retaining a controlled parking zone. The fee will not be applied to current resident permit holders in the Stadium zones who were granted free permits when the Stadium was built.

The consultation, which will commence from January 2015, will ask residents from the 28,000 affected households across the city to choose between retaining their zone or withdrawing it. A decision will NOT be made until consultation with residents has taken place. The change in fees will only be introduced where residents vote in favour of retaining their controlled parking zone. Comparisons with other councils show much higher charges for non-city centre parking permits. Councillor Martin Mancey, Portfolio Holder for Energy City and responsible for Parking, added:

December and January Gardening

Gardening

Pots for your patio We tend not to venture into the garden so much during the darker winter months, so it’s a great idea to plant up containers to put near the front door or on the patio, where you can see them from the window. Most garden centres have plenty of plants to choose from. Christmas rose or Helleborus niger has attractive white cup-shaped flowers. It could be teamed with Skimmia reevesiana, with its festive bright red berries. Add bright red mini cyclamen and you’ve really got Christmas in a pot – gorgeous! Containers don’t have to be filled with flowering plants. A pot or group of pots planted with a mixture of different coloured foliage can be just as attractive. And they don’t need much maintenance to keep them looking good. Euphorbia, Heuchera, Euonymus and trailing ivy are just a few with fantastic foliage. Have a browse round local garden centres for inspiration. You could also create a planter for the kitchen with a selection of herbs, making it easy to add fresh flavours to your cooking. Woody planting Now is the time for woody planting, which is trees and shrubs, including soft fruit and top fruit. Getting them in before Christmas is ideal, to avoid the coldest weather and so the roots can settle in before spring.

Gardening Dig manure or compost into your planting hole. Firm in the shrub so it doesn’t move about in strong winds. Keep new additions watered in during dry spells and check the planting tips at garsons.co.uk.

incorporating as much organic matter as you can. Forking over not only helps prepare the soil for next year, it helps reduce pests by exposing them to hungry birds.

Mulch once the soil is moist, and before frost gets into the ground. Mulching provides a protective eiderdown over the winter and prevents soil erosion and leaching of nutrients. Landscape bark, mushroom compost, leaf mould and manure are great soil improvers – stock up on some bags from the garden centre.

Weeds - sadly many will survive the cold weather so once the soil is workable, hoe away before they leap into action in the spring.

Jobs for December & January You can still enjoy the garden even though it’s December. The rain in November has made the soil easy to work, so enjoy some fresh air while you get planting or digging. In wind-prone areas, roses can be reduced in height by a third to prevent the wind catching them. Buddleia, clematis, wisteria and anything tender can be left until the end of winter to avoid die-back in hard frosts. You can now winter prune fruit. Stone fruit shouldn’t be pruned in winter as the sap is being drawn back into the trees. Leave the pruning of buddleia, clematis, wisteria and anything potentially tender until the end of winter to avoid die-back in hard frosts. Roses can be reduced in height by a third to prevent the wind catching them, and then re-prune in March. Don’t forget your feathered friends over the festive season. Remember to leave out an unfrozen water supply and high energy food. Use natural decorations indoors, including wreaths and table decorations to make your home extra-special this festive season. Choose a potted Christmas tree and keep it beside your front door, strung with lights. Damage limitation and garden maintenance When the weather allows, carry on clearing paths of moss and leaves. After heavy snowfall, gently brush snow off conifers and hedges to stop the weight forcing them apart. If you have a chance, pack the branches of tender trees and shrubs with straw and secure with fleece to protect them from the cold; thick dry mulches will also protect roots from freezing conditions. If you haven’t already done this, lay old carpeting or something similar over cold frames to protect them and check the insulation in greenhouses and that heaters are working properly.

Take care not to let leaves accumulate around alpines - they will die if left damp for long. Cover bare patches around clumps with gritty compost to encourage regrowth. Bulbs, flowers and containers Sow sweet peas under cover to give you a head start in the spring. Raise any containers not already on feet or bricks to protect them from the cold and lag them with bubble wrap or straw and hessian; even hardy plants need protection in really cold weather. Tucking them all close together in a sheltered spot by the house is another useful ploy. Don’t allow containers under cover to dry out; and check that evergreens outside haven’t got dry while pots have been frozen. Pick over winter pansies (pictured above) and violas, removing leaves with mildew or black spots on them, getting rid of any badly affected plants altogether. Replace these with lovely new plants next month. Remove debris regularly to prevent pests from taking up residence. Summer bulbs Summer bulbs will soon appear in the garden centres - think ahead to the blaze of colour that dahlias, begonias, lilies and gladioli will provide in your garden and remember that the days are now getting longer - hurray! Houseplants To keep your Christmas houseplants looking in top condition, follow these simple guidelines... Poinsettias, phalaenopsis and Christmas cacti (pictured right) - like to be warm, although not blasted with heat on top of radiators and the like! Poinsettias will reward exposure to cold or draughts with almost certain death, so treat them with kid gloves. Beware overwatering any of them. Feed poinsettias weekly, the others fortnightly.

Clean and repair your garden tools, book the lawn mower in for a service and check garden furniture for any rot. When it is warm enough to brave the elements, treat sheds, fences and trellis with wood preservative; brushes and rollers are fine for most things, however a sprayer is well worth buying for tricky projects such as woven panels!

Cyclamen, azaleas and cymbidium orchids - prefer cooler conditions and like to be moist, though not overwatered. Dunk them in a bowl of water until the pot feels heavy and allow to drain before replacing on a saucer of gravel. Pinch faded cyclamen flowers at the base of the stem and remove spent azalea flowers very carefully - the new buds are often just below the old ones.

When soil conditions allow, continue to dig over beds and borders,

Happy gardening and merry Christmas!

Local People, Local Lives.

Chris Warkup of HullMag has had the pleasure of interviewing Alan Raw the presenter of Radio Humberside’s ‘BBC Introducing’ programme. We discussed the thriving Local Music scene which he promotes through this show and his other various cultural activities. So first of all tell us about your musical career? “I’ve played in local bands for decades. I started out as a ceilidh band drummer as my family are all Irish musicians and I have played in lots of folk bands for years. In 1979 I joined the Green Ginger Band and have played in the world of folk music ever since.” “In my teens I decided to diversify and got into reggae. I was in a band called Back To Base and made an album with Benjamin Zephaniah (pictured below). I have been a session drummer since then and played on various albums. These days I play the drums for ‘Endoflevelbaddie’ which is Electro Hip Hop music and headlined both the Freedom Festival and the ‘Humber Street Sesh’. I’m also the drummer in a duo called ‘Verne Duels’ who opened the recent Cornucopia Festival Main Stage. I also drum with world dance fusion group Celtarabia.” “I’m also a member of the ‘World Drumming Network’, which is co-ordinated from Hull . We have members all over the world including 150 drum schools in America . Thanks to the drumming I’ve done I’ve become an endorsed drummer with ‘Rhythm Tech’ & Regaltip and do various drum clinics and lessons” So how did the BBC shows develop? “I’ve organised festivals for several years including one called ‘Impro’ which I ran 6 years in Hull from 1997. The BBC wanted to work with that festival on something called BBC Music Live during 2002 and whilst doing that festival together, they spoke to me and said “you know an awful lot about music and you’re good at introducing people on stage, so would I be interested in doing a radio programme.” I declined and suggested several others much better people, but they had made their decision. Also at that time I was lucky enough to be interviewed by John Peel who had been to Hull for the Sounds of the Suburbs Programme on Channel 4. As part of that programme we had a wander round the docks and talked about being a drummer in Back to Base. With all this going on for me, the BBC said they wanted me to do it. So I agreed to give it a go for six weeks and it is now in the 13th year.” “In 2002 there were just 2 or 3 stations doing similar shows for new music and they were mainly in the south though I was the first one to have an all unsigned play list. Our focus was on the stuff I did anyway which was Community & Youth Arts support and bringing those values into a new music radio show. It wasn’t just about playing the acts it was full of useful information as well. This format has become quite an influence

Alan Raw, photographed at the POP Artspace in Princes Quay, Hull. on other shows. We ended up going from ‘Raw Talent’ in Hull to similar shows in Leeds, Sheffield and York. After John Peel died I helped with the ‘BBC Electric Proms’ which culminated with a tour of the country and a very big event in Camden . We had bands from Hull playing in the Camden show. All this sparked off ‘In Music We Trust’ at the BBC and this was the beginnings of ‘BBC Introducing’. The format of our show has now gone to BBC Introducing shows all over the UK.” So what is the format of the ‘BBC Introducing’ shows? It all revolves around a thing called the ‘BBC Introducing Uploader’ which is the way that people share their music with us and then we share it with the other programmes. It’s through this we receive the new music and we have recommended many artists who’ve had national air-play. A few of them have gone on to play BBC Introducing stages including Leeds and Glastonbury festivals. The uploader and shows can be found at www.bbc.co.uk/introducing. The Shows are broadcast 8-10 pm on Saturday’s. My Leeds show is live but the Hull one is recorded on Thursday nights. Bands are recorded live in the BBC Open Centre with a professional engineer. In our first year we did a ‘Raw Talent sessions album’ but not had the opportunity since. The show includes a full band session and then a live acoustic session from another artist or a local DJ set. Plus many tracks received through the Uploader. We have recorded around 1500 live sessions now. It will be difficult to pin down who are the most exciting bands at the moment, but I could say the best option is to tune in on a Saturday night and have a listen. It’s good to see people playing in more than one band too. It keeps the mix exciting so if one band is better at recording and another at live gigs the musicians get the full experience and explore different styles.

BBC Introducing Presenter: Alan Raw How would you describe the current state of local music around Hull and the East Riding? “This area does punch way above its weight. Yorkshire as a whole has always been a hotbed of talent. I’m lucky to have started these shows when I did in 2002 as the talent had been building up and there has been a progression ever since. The festivals in this area have also been fabulous. Well run with people who put their heart into them such as Beverley Folk Festival, Cornucopia, Humber Street Sesh & ReCOGnition Festival. What do you think of the new live music gigs that have started at Quiet Riot in Beverley? I think that you can’t help but have a great line up when you begin to run gigs in Beverley as there is so much talent and things going on. There has also been another folk revival where local artists are in the midst of it. I have noticed lots of alternative folk styles at the moment and I’m seeing this from gigs I attend for ‘Verne Duels’. There is lots of local talent around in this such as Jody Mckenna and Emily Moulton who are as good as anyone who’s headlining a folk festival. Quiet Riot is providing another outlet at the right time, as everything is happening right now.” Do you think local music gains the national attention it deserves and do you think 2017 may help? “I’d like to think that it would. It’s a bit ridiculous that with the talent we have had over the past decade that we haven’t had more acts from this region become nationally successful. Not sure why that is, I’ve heard lots of theories why. I’m not certain if ‘2017 City of Culture’ will give it the final push and tip the scales, but it should do. I’ve been shouting about Yorkshire and Hull for long enough at national conferences and when presenting the unsigned stage at Leeds Festival etc . People do know about it through social media too. We are making a big splash in all media platforms nowadays and the level of talent is undeniably high. It is of course entirely possible that Yorkshire is capital of the universe and you can’t get a better place to play than here and we’ll agree to welcome some bands from other parts of the world to join us.” What do you listen to apart from new local music? At home I usually listen to quite avant garde experimental stuff because I’m Chief Exec of an arts charity called The Creative & Cultural Company, with numerous galleries and arts spaces. In those spaces sound art is a really important part of what we

want to showcase. We have a lot of performances happen and I get to hear stuff that is quite unique. We’ve also had 5 album launches in our art spaces the last month with ReCOGnition and there’s monthly music nights happening now too. We’ve got various exhibitions and activities happening in the spaces all the time, usually centred around ‘POP’ Pride of Place Art Space at Princes Quay (pictured below). We have HIP Hull International Photography Gallery opening next door next month which links to HIPfest. Downstairs we have The Glitch with is a digital arts space for people to use and develop their own individual arts. There’s also performance and rehearsal facilities which can be used and lots of Carnival Arts activity. Just get in touch with us via www.creativeandcultural.com especially if you can do a bit of volunteering or want to join The Creative & Cultural Network. We are involved in lots of exciting partnership work with other cities in Holland, Belgium and around the UK. So come and see whats on offer. Is there anyone who inspired you? “John Peel (right) without a doubt. I listened to him as I grew up and I soon learned there was more to life than folk music. I was lucky enough to meet him and get to know him and that just added to his influence. Another inspiration is Benjamin Zephaniah. He writes wise words and he once got me through a difficult flight by talking to me all the way through an electrical storm. And of course my folky family who got me into all this musical stuff.” Do you have any ambitions? “I would love to have time to fix my campervan! It needs rebuilding from scratch and it only gets attention when I need it to get me home from festivals. I want to see Hull City win the premiership, be good at my work and drum more. Only other thing I’d like to do is be a really good dad and that would surpass any other ambitions.” Alan Raw: CEO at The Creative and Cultural Company BBC Introducing Presenter Outreach Coordinator at Higher Rhythm/Music Industry Yorkshire. How to make your business work for YOU in 2015. Over the years that I have been working with Entrepreneurs and business owners I have noticed that they have many traits that they bring to their life and work: the ability to thrive independently, discipline in managing personal freedom and self-made competitiveness.

business, will you need more staff, new machinery etc? c) A Finance Plan e.g. will the change in your operations need more cash in the short term. What will the cashflow look like over the coming year, will you be able to take more cash out of the business?

Yet even among the most savvy and driven of these business owners, there is a tendency to focus too much on the business tasks at hand and what is happening that minute or day. As I like to say, working IN their business rather than ON their business. This means that they are leaving their business growth to chance rather than deliberately having a strategy to grow. So as this issue is all about New year, New You and in this case New Business, I thought I would share with you the single best strategy you could use to grow in 2015. Get a proper plan in place and I’m not talking about one of those business plans that you write for the bank and stick in a draw to never look at again. I’m talking about a plan that is focused on what actions you are going to take to actually move your business forward. Once you have decided what you actually want your business to achieve this year, what Profit, what turnover, how much you are going to put in your personal bank account then your plan just needs to cover three basic areas:a) Your marketing and sales plan, which is all about getting and keeping customers. For example, how can you get more customers, how can you get them to stay longer and pay you more. Address these and your success will be assured. b) An Operations Plan, which is all about what impact more customers and transactions will have on my

To Contact

The very act of writing out your plan forces you to review everything: your value proposition, marketing activities, operations plan and financial plan. You’ll end up spotting connections you otherwise would have missed. For example, if your marketing plan projects 10,000 customers by the end of the year and your staffing plan provides for two salespeople, that forces you to ask: How can two salespeople generate 10,000 customers? The answer might lead you to conclude that forming partnerships, targeting distributors and concentrating on bulk sales to large companies may be your best tactics. Now you have the plan, then the key to success is ACTION, you’ve done the hard work of planning the work, so now work the plan and stick to it. I know that this doesn’t really sound cutting edge but its a simple fact that most business owners operate on a day to day basis and never really do the proper thinking and planning that would really make their business move forward. If you want to know more about how to build your business, just pop along to the following: www.the-business-successcoach.com and watch the three free videos.

Have a great Christmas and a very successful New Year. John Olivant.

New Year, New You

Surviving the haul to Payday

With the festive season over, it’s easy to look back and feel guilty about how much money you spent. We all feel like putting it to the back of our mind – after all, January feels like a long stretch until payday. But just like we need to cut back on the mince pies to stop our waistline expanding further, we need to take action now before money gets even more out of control. The sooner you face your finances the sooner you can get your bank account back into shape. Start by going back to your budget and seeing what you might be able to do without this month. If you don’t have a budget, Moneysavingexpert.com has a free online one, or download an app to your smartphone. Simple things like eating up what’s left in the freezer, buying supermarket own brand or inviting friends over instead of going out can save you valuable pounds. Challenge yourself to find activities with the family that are free, like going for walks or playing games. Instead of heading to out to the cinema, borrow a DVD for free from your local library and have your friends over for a movie night. The more you can do to cut out and cut back, the less tempted you will be to overspend or take out further credit. And remember, it’s never too early to start saving, so once that next pay cheque arrives put a small amount into a savings account for next Christmas. After all, it seems to come around quicker each year, so getting ahead of the game is always worthwhile.

And once you have started, you may as well carry on. Make a point to regularly review your budget to see if there are any other ways you can make further cost savings. So make this New Year’s resolution, a choice to be in control of your finances, and not the other way around. For help with budgeting, try a free money management course. Technology

Content is King Your brand can now be everywhere in a digital world. Google, Facebook and Twitter make that possible. Online your content now defines you. That’s it. If your website has little content then it will position you as light weight and maybe not all that serious.

You are discovered online: Building online assets means you turn up in search engine results, and can be found on Facebook and other social networks as people share your content. Trust is created online: Multiple views of your brand and content creates online trust. Being seen 3-5 times online takes your trust factor to over 50% accodrding to some online tools. People buy online: This trend isn’t going away! So what are the digital assets that you should be building and investing in today to remain relevant and continue to grow? 1. Website Websites are your digital platform and the customers gateway to your brand. It maybe a corporate site or an online store or both. it needs to be well branded, easy to use, intuitive and designed for a social web.

6. Mobile Content The rise of high speed wireless and the mobile phone and tablets has made information accessible from anywhere. It can be a mobile app or a mobile responsive website that adapts to any screen size for easy media consumption. Ignoring this can reduce sales for online stores, engagement on blogs and page views on company websites.

Christmas Quiz Answers (from page 10)

Historic Holy Trinity reveals £4.5m plans to transform into stunning 2017 venue Holy Trinity Church, Hull’s most amazing place, today (November 7) revealed ambitious plans to transform into a leading heritage, cultural and tourism venue by the 2017 UK City of Culture year. The Vicar of Holy Trinity, the Rev Canon Dr Neal Barnes, the Archbishop of York, Dr John Sentamu, and the Chair of Hull UK City of Culture 2017, Rosie Millard, came together to announce a £4.5m development project for England’s largest parish church.

The transformation will see Holy Trinity’s magnificent interior restored and remodelled to create a new flexible space in a beautiful setting for Christian worship, as well as providing firstclass facilities for banquets, concerts and a wide range of artistic and cultural events and performances. The plans, which also include a stylish new café of the highest quality, will, in effect, create an iconic new venue in time for Hull’s year in the national cultural spotlight.

Meanwhile, outside the church, Trinity Square will be transformed with a stunning piazza-style public space as the centrepiece of the Old Town and a beacon for the regeneration of Hull’s heritage quarter. The plans for Trinity Square have been developed jointly by Holy Trinity and Hull City Council and will see the churchyard and square become a seamless space.

Holy Trinity is Hull’s finest Grade 1 listed building and dates back more than 700 years to when Edward I granted a Royal Charter to the former settlement of Wyke to create Kings Town upon Hull (Kingston upon Hull).

Building upon hundreds of years of Christian worship, the church has in recent times established a growing reputation for hosting cultural and community events, ranging from Hull’s premier real ale and cider festival to concerts and plays, and the sensitive redevelopment of Holy Trinity and its surroundings will enable many more such uses.

The transformation will support the objectives of the City Plan, which aims to create 7,500 new jobs over 10 years, including by establishing Hull as a major visitor destination.

The project already has £1.5m in firm pledges from individual benefactors. The remainder of the project costs are expected to be raised from significant donations, trust funds and foundations.

The redevelopment will open up new income streams to provide a financially sustainable future for Holy Trinity as a magnificent place of faith and worship in the heart of Hull, as well as preserving a building of local and national architectural and heritage significance.

Subject to planning permission from Hull City Council and consent from the Diocese of York, physical changes will begin early in 2015 and the project will be completed by late 2016.

Property asking prices fall as keen sellers seek winter buyers. Rightmove says high prices and new mortgage lending rules have put a temporary brake on the ‘mini-boom’

Homeowners keen to attract buyers in the quieter winter months are asking less for the properties than those that came onto the market in October, as high prices and new mortgage lending rules have put a temporary brake on the “mini-boom” in the housing market, Rightmove said on Monday. Figures from the property website showed that asking prices for homes coming onto the market in November were down 1.7% on October, while the number of homes for sale dropped to a seasonal low. Sellers typically drop asking prices in the lead up to Christmas but this year’s November asking price drop, which shaves £4,542 off the average property price bringing it to £267,127, is the smallest in five

years. The annual rate of house price growth to November this year is still up at 8.5% after eight out of the last 12 months showed property price increases. “Selling is more difficult than it was earlier in the year, though the mini-boom experienced by much of the country has hit the pause rather than the stop button,” said Miles Shipside, Rightmove director and housing market. “Underlying demand remains strong but has been muted by higher prices stretching affordability at the same time as the ability to borrow more to fund those higher prices has been curtailed by tighter mortgage lending criteria.”

Property & Homes However, buyers looking for a new home are not exactly spoilt for choice. The average number of properties per estate agency branch is at historically low levels with an average of 60 properties for sale. This is the lowest number ever recorded at this time of year, according to Rightmove. Lack of property choice has helped fuel this year’s upwards price pressure and the website said supply shortages in some parts of the country could push prices up again in 2015. This month new listings on the property portal were down 1% on the same period last year and 15% on last month. The situation is unlikely to improve before the year end as sellers wait until after Christmas to market their home. However, some new buyers may start the traditional New Year search for property as early as Christmas Day this year, speculated Shipside, due to the lack of affordable homes on the market. In 2013, the site registered more than 500,000 visits on Christmas day, and more than 1.3m on Boxing day.

The annual rate of house price growth reported by Rightmove, which looks at sale prices, is roughly in line with that of Britain’s biggest building, Nationwide, which records prices once the sale has been agreed. It recently reported that the annual rate of house price growth slowed to 9% in October from 9.4% in September and said that it expected things to continue in the same direction. “Some forward-looking indicators, such as new buyer inquiries, suggest that activity may soften further in the near term, especially in London,” said Robert Gardner, Nationwide’s chief economist. The picture is also greatly varied across the country. Prices are up 0.8% in London compared with last month, contributing to a 16.2% rise in the capital, acording to Rightmove. This compares to a 2.6% monthly price fall in Wales, meaning prices are up just over 1% annually. The average house price in Wales is now £166,992 compared to London’s £601,180.

Six ways to increase the value of your home Whether you’re thinking of selling soon or at some point in the future, it’s worth considering how some improvements can increase the value of your home. There are some changes that will help to increase the price and give you a better chance of selling. However, other improvements could cost more than they add or even detract from the value of a property. Installing double glazing Everyone likes to have a nice cosy home and good quality double glazing will make a property more attractive. You need to ensure that you choose the right type of windows for the specific property, as otherwise you could put buyers off. For example, period homes should have wooden frames as opposed to plastic ones. The price of installation can be up to £20,000, depending on the size of the property, but it could increase the value by 10%. Improve your broadband speed Having a fast broadband service is now seen as an essential item by many home buyers. Not all properties can benefit from superfast fibre optic broadband. If the reception in your area is too slow you can use satellite

broadband simply by having a dish installed. Packages start from around £17 a month depending on your requirements, but having access to this service could add 5 to 10% to the value of your home. Tidy up outside First impressions are crucial when selling a property and it’s quick and easy to make some improvements. These don’t have to be costly and simply making sure the grass is cut or the hedges are trimmed can help. Other work you should consider includes re-rendering the brickwork, having the roof retiled or painting the exterior woodwork. Smartening up the outside of your house could be a simple way of increasing the value by as much as 10%.

Property & Homes

Add an en-suite Many buyers are now looking for en-suite or additional bathrooms, especially if the property has four or more bedrooms. If you’ve already got an en-suite or there’s not enough room, you could add some luxury touches to the existing layout. By fitting new taps, a good quality shower and screen or a heated towel rail you could improve the attractiveness of the bathrooms. Having a brand new bathroom installed could cost up to £20,000, but you should see an increase in value of up to 10%.

Property & Homes Improve the outdoor space Outdoor areas are becoming increasingly important for homeowners and can make a sale. People want to feel that the garden is part of the home, so fitting new doors to open up the connecting space would be a beneficial improvement. If you can’t do this, then cutting down any excessive trees will help to increase the amount of light. Paying to have your trees cut down will cost around £300 or a complete garden redesign could be up to £15,000. However, garden improvements will add between 5 and 10% to the value. A New Fireplace An outdated fireplace will detract from a stylish home and installing a new one could increase the asking price by 5%. A remotecontrolled fireplace will cost between £3,000 and £5,000, but means a buyer could switch it on from anywhere in the room. Another good improvement would be to fit a wood burner. These cost around £2,500, but are extremely fuel efficient. It’s important to consider your home improvements carefully, rather than jumping straight in. You don’t want to end up spending more on the work than you are adding to the value.

If City had held onto leads against Stoke, Newcastle, West Ham and Arsenal we would be in a Champions League position but following the defeat at Burnley we are looking down at the bottom three. There is very little between around 15 sides and that is

shown by the rise of Newcastle from the ‘Pardew out’ whipping boys of September to a team in a European position. We are now capable of visiting clubs like Arsenal and Liverpool without great fear. We are now being regarded as a genuine ‘Premier League’ team by the ‘experts’.

East Stand Views...

I suppose the big disappointments are Europe and the League Cup. Many of us had our hearts set on regular European matches till Christmas but we threw this away by resting too many key players for the Lokeren match. This meant we had sufficient squad members for a run in the league cup. The summer signings meant we had around ten players failing to make the first eleven but there to boost the squad for a three games a week schedule. Surely we could use them for another cup run as most of the top sides don’t put any real concern into this cup. this wasn’t to be however as yet again we threw away a winning position in the dying stages at West Brom. This now means we have a surplus of players with very little to do and Sagbo and Ince already sent into the

Championship for match practice. Even more bizarre is sending out Ince before we have even paid for him!!. It does help City’s cause at at the eventual tribunal though if he’s not regarded as a Premier League player at the moment. The side is still taking shape but a few significant injuries haven’t helped. Jelavic is the most important. He started the season excellently as both target man and goalscorer but his bizarre prematch injury has severely depleted the side. We have only have 3 - 4 support strikers or attacking midfielders/ wingers but no centre forward in the absence of Jelavic and lesser extent Sagbo. no one can hold the ball up or bring others into play. Hopefully the Croatian will return later in the month. Michael Dawson was finally looking the part in the 5 man defence before he gets injured and both goalkeepers go and get injured leaving Jakupovic as the last man standing. He was excellent at Anfield and then the miss-kick against Southampton!!

ticking for fireworks towards the end of November too. The results of the FA challenge regarding the name change should be coming soon and no doubt lots of bluster about selling the club will follow. Oh joy!!! Lots of Christmas spirit expected!. Interestingly the news of the SMC mortgage has come out and how The Council allowed the previous owners to take out a loan on a council asset. No doubt this may become relevant in the future if they still lay claim to the stadium or would like this somehow tied to the club in any potential sale. Who knows? Talking of Christmas, the ghost of Christmas past has returned to haunt the Australian jungle. Jimmy Bullard will be once again be seen as that witty cockney urchin to the wider public. True he couldn’t help his first injury but the second one is open to conjecture. Did he take a drop from a parachute as falling from heights isn’t one of his talents allegedly. There are so many stories of him bragging about

We have also made a number of signings but only Robertson, Diame (pictured below) and to a lesser extent Dawson stand out so far. Ben Arfa and Ramirez are not yet match fit, Snodgrass injured after 30 minutes, Hernandez yet to acclimatise and Ince back into the Championship. Still early his wages that he also left a bitter taste days though. in the mouths of fans during his three year at the KC Stadium. Ironically he may be one of the best players to ever wear black and amber but his good days were few and far between in the disastrous deal to join Hull City.

It wouldn’t be natural to not mention off the field issues and the clock is

Let’s just hope for a few more wins by the new year and everything to remain harmonious off the field too. Let’s make this a Christmas wish.

Words by Woody Mellor

As we head towards Christmas it’s time to reflect on the start to the season but to be honest it is hard to make any real judgement.

IMPROVING CONFIDENCE BY ACCENTUATING POSITIVES

You might be surprised at the number of people who lack confidence. Even those you may think have everything can lack self-belief. The trick is in learning how to help your confidence break through the surface and, once it’s out, knowing how to keep it there!

THE BEST & MOST COST EFFECTIVE WAY TO ADVERTISE IN HULL, COTTINGHAM, BROUGH & SURROUNDING VILLAGES! Call 01964 552 470 to book!

Confidence is such a huge barrier for so many people that, over the next few months, I will help explain how to turn fears and insecurities into positive energy. In other words, I’ll help you “get in the zone”. Think back now and try to remember the times in your life when you’ve felt on top of the world, times when you have felt real joy to the point where you could almost taste it. Grab hold of those feelings of great happiness, excitement, high energy and empowerment, those times when you felt invincible. Now, here’s what you do with them. The next time you are faced with an unpleasant situation or a new challenge that you’re not sure you can handle, take your mind away to one of those truly memorable, satisfying times when you felt you could conquer anything and relive it. How you felt whenC you were there, the sounds, the smells, even the temperature. M Use these positive thoughts and images and develop them to Y your advantage. You do have lots of confidence within you, so remember CM how confident you felt back then and recreate that feeling MY of confidence to motivate you into self-belief and move you forward. FIONA’S FOOD FOR THOUGHT By Fiona Dwyer, broadcast journalist, PR & media consultant, slave to 2 children and a husband.

Christmas Countdown

Not long now and Christmas will be upon us and the children are already excited! I have a Christmas countdown app on my phone and my daughter, eyes shining, informed me this week exactly how many days, hours and seconds it is until the glorious event! Whilst I then started mentally panicking about how much I had to sort out and get organised, bearing in mind, at the point of writing this, I haven’t started Christmas shopping yet, her delight then made me pause and try to remember Christmas through a child’s eyes. We get so caught up in the pre-Christmas mayhem, what should be a joyous celebration can instead become an incredibly stressful time of year. As parents we want to make sure our children have the best Christmas day ever, full of wonderful memories, knowing that Father Christmas has been as generous as ever! But I think it’s equally important to remember that Christmas isn’t just about presents. It’s more important to spend real, quality time together as a family. Enjoy the magic while you can. It’s these moments that last a lifetime.

Juicing for health

Have you ever juiced? I did a 3-day detox and am now determined to keep juicing as part of my normal routine. I must admit I was a bit sceptical at first, wondering if I’d actually be able to stomach drinking beetroot (which I’ve always hated) mixed with five or six other vegetables, but I have been pleasantly surprised! And as well as the obvious health benefits (I’ll definitely be getting more than my 5-a-day!), I’m looking forward to having more energy, better sleep and, of course, losing more than a few pounds. And after watching an incredible documentary called “Super Juice Me”, which followed 8 people with all sorts of chronic illnesses through a 28-day juice programme, I was inspired. At the end of the month they all felt fantastic and more positive about their respective futures than they had in years. Symptoms had reduced, if not disappeared altogether, they were pain-free and even did a 10k walk. It was remarkable and humbling to see them. And I thought if juicing did that for them, how beneficial would it be for those of us who hadn’t been suffering to the same extent.

New Year’s Resolutions – worth it or a waste of time?

Well, we’ve been talking about Christmas since September, so why not start planning New Year’s resolutions now?!! Or perhaps you think they’re a waste of time – fun to make but too hard to maintain? Here’s some food for thought! I thought I’d share some rather alarming figures about how we eat and drink to excess during the festive season! According to research, on average British adults consume 7,000 calories on Christmas Day, which is more than double the male and triple the female recommended daily intake. And by 2pm on the 25th, when most of us have reached our usual limit, many go even further by adding more cake, brandy butter and alcohol, or trifle in my case!! Armed with these statistics, YouGov did a poll last year and found, unsurprisingly, that most people intended to make resolutions about eating more healthily and doing more exercise. I mean we all know how busy the gym is in January!! But for those of you who think resolutions are a load of bunkum, I don’t agree. I think it’s always worth starting the year with good intentions - but don’t set out to fail. Rather than a grandiose gesture, choose one modest, manageable goal that you can build on throughout the year. For instance, if you want to lose weight and improve your health, you could stop snacking between meals (and stop eating that bar of chocolate after lunch that you desperately need to get you through the afternoon!), decide to take a walk three times a week or use the stairs instead of the escalator or lift. Set out to succeed and plan a reward so that it gives you something to look forward to! I wish you all a Merry Christmas and a very Happy New Year!
