Welcome & Contents
Hello Readers,
Welcome to the July/August edition of HULLMAG. Well I am hoping that Summer is finally here and we don’t have any more cool and wet weather surprises in store. We have our fantastic Summer Daze Feature in this month’s magazine that is packed out with ideas and advertisers promoting things that you can do with the children or as families and as individuals. So if you are looking to visit a summer show or a music event we have plenty to choose from. We have lots of great discount vouchers throughout the magazine too - so do look through carefully so as not to miss them. The East Riding Mumbler has some great ideas for the summer too - so you can get out and about and active with your children. If you want to introduce the kids to gardening we have some useful advice on getting that ball rolling to.
8 Life on the Veg
We have some great competitions in this edition ranging from Ice Hockey Tickets to see the Hull Pirates (I must admit that I am addicted to the Ice Hockey) to tickets to go to the Sea Life Centre and tickets to see Gary Numan, Frankly Sinatra and Andrea Bocelli - in fact something for all ages and tastes. Marion Owen has also got plenty of ideas for you too on the Travel page where she looks at cruises. This month we have a Hessle Feature that encourages us to visit this wonderful town as a shopping destination or perhaps for a meal or to explore the local history and sights that make Hessle the vibrant and cosmopolitan town it is.

Pets Page
First Aid for Pets
Each month, vet Dr. David Robinson from the Kingston Veterinary Group will be giving advice about looking after your pets. This month’s Pets Page article is a second in a series where he discusses emergency treatment and first aid for common incidents.
like a twitch or uncomfortable shaking that can last from less than a minute to several minutes. If your pet is having a seizure stay calm and talk to him to reassure him. Carefully move him away from any dangers and other animals and keep a safe distance from his mouth as he may become aggressive. Keep note of how long the seizure lasts and contact your vet for advice. If your pet is diabetic the seizure could be due to low blood sugar and you should seek veterinary attention straight away.
Burns Burns are categorised by their depth. First degree burns are superficial, second degree burns extend to the middle layer of skin and third degree burns are the deepest. To treat first and second degree burns, submerge or rinse them with cold water or apply a clean cloth soaked in cold water. If the blisters are closed apply a clean, dry bandage. If the blisters are open, do not cover, let them heal naturally. If they are large or do not heal, consult your vet. You should seek veterinary advice immediately for third degree burns. Do not move your pet unless it is absolutely necessary and do not immerse the burn in cold water. Your pet will be in shock so cover him with a blanket to retain body heat and loosely cover, do not wrap, a clean, thick, dry dressing over the wound. Seizures & Convulsions A seizure causes sudden and involuntary movement and can look
Handling A Sick or Injured Pet If your pet is sick or injured you should handle it with care and caution. Even the friendliest animal can bite when distressed or in pain and it may need to be restrained and muzzled. Most owners of passive pets won’t own a muzzle, but you can improvise by making a muzzle for a dog or cat from a pair of tights, a tie, or a strip of cloth. The muzzle should be lightly looped over your pet’s nose and mouth, then crossed under the chin and tied behind the ears. Although emergency pet treatment and first aid should never be a substitute for veterinary care, knowing what to do in an emergency could save your pet’s life.
f you have any queries about your pet’s health you can ask us for advice. Contact us on 01482 223688 or visit our website www.kingstonvet.co.uk

Competition
GARY NUMAN to play Sheffield
Foundry on 15th September 2016
Following the success of his Sold-Out London residence last October and the Sold Out Manchester & Cork shows that followed. Gary Numan is back with a September 2016 UK Tour which sees him playing a set compromising of material from his albums ‘Replicas’, ‘The Pleasure Principle’ and ‘Teleken’. Following on from the success of his Top 20 album, Splinter (Songs From A Broken Mind), and accompanying two-year Splinter world tour, electronic and industrial music pioneer Gary Numan returns to the UK to celebrate his classic albums Replicas, The Pleasure Principle and Telekon in September 2016. “Having spent most of the last couple of years touring Splinter, with the release of the new album released later this year, 2016 seems an ideal time to revisit the three albums that changed my life,” says Numan. “These three albums are now considered classics and playing tracks from each one in September, will be very special for me. I very rarely look back at past glories but, with these shows, I intend to not only look back, but to celebrate those early days. Without those songs and experiences I wouldn’t be here today. Splinter was widely considered to be one of the best, if not the best album I’ve ever made. With that achievement I’ve finally learned to be proud of my history, and that’s what these shows are all about.” Numan’s influence has been recognized by a diverse array of the world’s greatest artists - from Prince to Lady Gaga, Jack White to Kanye West, and The Foo Fighters to Nine Inch Nails. A brand-new production called Frankly Sinatra features many of the songs from the classic album, performed just the way they were back in 1966. Regarded as the definitive Sinatra live performance, the album was Frank’s first commercially-released live recording, packed with 22 tracks including many of his best-known hits. Frankly Sinatra’s producers say that authenticity can be assured: star of the show – Stephen Triffitt – has himself enjoyed three seasons at Las Vegas’ Sands Casino portraying Frank. Featuring the swing, swagger and the velvet vocals of Frank Sinatra in concert, Stephen Triffitt is acclaimed worldwide as the master of his craft. The company’s MD, Michael Taylor, says Sinatra’s golden anniversary is to be celebrated in “swinging style” with a nationwide tour of brandnew stage show Frankly Sinatra in 2016. “There’s no better Sinatra,” says Michael. “Stephen Triffitt has sold out the London Palladium twice and the Royal Festival Hall with solo concert shows. “In Frankly Sinatra he skilfully dips in and out of character to tell the fascinating tale of the greatest vocalist and most charismatic performer of our time.”

ANDREA BOCELLI
to play SHEFFIELD ARENA on
FRIDAY 23RD SEPTEMBER 2016 One of the world’s great voices, Andrea Bocelli returns to the UK & Ireland celebrating the greatest movie songs of all time. Showcasing his latest, epic album ‘Cinema,’ the tour will feature stunning pieces from the classic cinema soundtracks along with arias and duets from the most legendary operas and other classic pieces from the artist’s repertoire. ‘Cinema’ made history in the UK by reaching Number 3 in the Official Charts, crowning Bocelli as the only classical artist to achieve ten Top 10 albums. Bocelli reunited with his musical dream team for the recording - including David Foster, Humberto Gatica and Tony Renis who worked together on the trailblazing success of Bocelli’s ‘Amore.’ Together, they explored theme songs featured in films such as “Doctor Zhivago”, “Love Story”, “The Godfather”, “Life is Beautiful”, “Gladiator”, “The Postman”, “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” and many more, as well as popular songs from stage
musicals, immortalised by their film versions, such as “West Side Story” and “Evita.” A duet with pop superstar Ariana Grande on ‘E Piu Ti Penso’ from ‘Once Upon A Time In America’ completed the stellar line up. From Ennio Morricone to Leonard Bernstein, these songs represent modern classics and over 4 nights, Bocelli will transport audiences to these epic film sets, as well as performing some of his best-loved songs. The biggest selling solo classical artist of all time, Bocelli has performed for four U.S. presidents, two popes and the royal family, as well as at ceremonies for the Olympic Games and the World Cup. Tickets purchased online or by phone are priced £49.50 £132 including booking fee. Tickets purchased in person at the Arena box office are priced £47.25 - £126 including booking fee. Intraining offers employment support in Hull A leading training provider which supports 16 to 24 year-olds in Hull by offering a clear route to employment, training or further education has been praised in a recent OFSTED inspection. Intraining, part of national training and college group NCG, has recently achieved ‘good’ status in all areas of its traineeship and apprenticeship service in a newly published report which can be viewed on the OFSTED website.
CASE STUDY
Intraining traineeship helps Billy build a career The foundations of a career in construction for a Hull man have been laid by Intraining Hull. Billy Wakes came to Intraining in 2015 as he was looking for work experience to give him a foot on the employment ladder in the construction trade. Intraining Hull supported Billy into a traineeship placement with PBS Construction which enabled him to gain on the job skills and experience three days a week for 10 weeks.
“The latest OFSTED report is clear external recognition of the significant investment that colleagues in Intraining make each and every day to ensure that learners are safe, supported and are given the chance to fully unlock their potential by developing their skills; achieving their qualifications and positively progressing in their lives and careers,” said Linda Dean, Managing Director of Intraining. “It is also fantastic to note that Intraining’s strong work with employers and partners has also been clearly recognised.” Intraining’s Hull centre also helps learners to achieve up to Level 2 qualifications in Maths and English if they didn’t achieve them in school and a dedicated careers coach provides employability training such as CV writing, interview skills and job matching to make sure they make the right career choice for them. Across the UK Intraining works with thousands of employers across all industries and sectors, ranging from small businesses to large national organisations and has developed and trained over 20,000 apprentices over the last three years. More information on Intraining is available online at www.intraining.co.uk You can also follow Intraining on Twitter at @IntrainingUK or you can like and follow us on Facebook at: https://www.facebook.com/IntrainingUK/
Billy grabbed the opportunity with both hands and even went the extra mile by working extra days to get the most out of his placement. Colleagues who worked with Billy really appreciated his fantastic work ethic and positive attitude and the company offered him an apprenticeship allowing him to gain nationally recognised qualifications whilst further enhancing his skills and experience of working on site. “Billy is a great example of how hard work pays off. He was given the tools at Intraining Hull and used them to his advantage which resulted in him obtaining an apprenticeship with PBS Construction,” said Mike Kemp, Team Leader for Intraining Hull.

The voice of local sport in Hull & East Yorkshire
Vote for Andy Martin
in National Award
Following his nomination and award win by his father Andrew Martin Senior in this year’s FA Community Awards 2016, Andrew Lee Martin who sadly passed away last November has won the County Peoples Choice Awards which recognises outstanding contribution to community football, and is now nominated to win this award Nationally.
SMO will be getting behind Andy and sharing the voting links through the campaign. The winning ERFA Community Award Nomination reads as follows: “My son Andrew Lee Martin passed away on 14th November 2015 after a short illness aged 35.He had coached grass roots football in our local village propelling an under 8s team over the last 10 years and they are currently playing under 18 football under North Ferriby United Academy. He has coached the local representative Hull Boys Sunday League age group for the last 10 years .He has taken boys and girls from different back grounds and lately engaged a boy who was in a local Care home in an effort to help rehabilitate him on to life’s successful pathway. He has taken the team to Holland on 2 occasions to sample the Dutch football and recently one of his boys made his debut for Hull City in the F.A Cup aged 16. There is currently lots of energy around setting up a charity in his memory, which is in the very early stages of discussion.” To get behind Andrew and his memory, visit SMO.news to find out how you can vote. #VoteAndrew
Wheelchair Sports Hull to Rebrand
Wheelchair Sports Hull will be rebranding to Disability Sports Humber this summer. Over the last 5 months the charity has been working hard to reach as many people with disabilities as possible taking its geographical reach wider. The change will enable the charity to reach out to a wider range of sports and disabilities. SMO recently spoke with Chair Daryl Jones and his interview can be found on SMO.news.

Yorkshire Jets Netball Petition
Yorkshire Jets, the Yorkshire based Superleague franchise have started a petition following them not receiving renewal of their franchise from England Netball. This means that there will not be a Superleague team based in Yorkshire, and therefore players and the development of talent could be impacted due to additional travel/expense and lack of support locally. SMO spoke to one parent to find out how this could impact on players: “My daughter is part of the England Pathway for Humberside and awaiting the decision to find out if she was successful at last month’s satellite trails. She is also part of the Athlete Development Program run by Yorkshire Jets and has equally developed skills and confidence. She trialled for this program because of the love for the game and the opportunity to train with her idols. Without a Superleague franchise how will players like my daughter be inspired and motivated, if the local talent of Yorkshire is not promoted?”
Yorkshire jets have issued a statement via their website and anyone wishing to support the Petition, can find links by visiting smo.news

Fun activities for kids over the summer Make the most of the long holidays and encourage your child or teenager to swap some of their screen time for a whole new adventure with our fun activities for kids ideas!
while being educational too.
From simple beginner ideas to projects they can use to develop new skills, these inspiring activities for children should keep them busy
Grow Your Own If your child starts growing fruit and veg in early summer, they could get really impressive results before term starts again. Find ideas in our article Gardening for kids on page 30.
photograph taken at the same time each day, wherever they are, or a box of souvenirs – funny, amazing and interesting keepsakes. Ten-sport summer Have fun staying active and set your child the challenge of playing 10 different sports before the holiday is over. As well as running, swimming and football, unearth a few more unusual sports to do. Explore History Forget the dusty stately homes of your youth – nowadays castles and mansions are packed with exciting experiences for the kids.
Camp ‘In’ for the Summer Holidays Suggest camping in their bedroom in a pop up tent, or an improvised campsite on their bedroom floor. Apart from meals and snacks (don’t encourage mice!) let your kids create their own world – a new landscape they can ‘travel’ to. Model Ambition If you’re stuck for ideas for indoor activities for kids, set aside a ‘messy space’ where they can get stuck into a model making project without having to clear it away every time the kitchen table is needed. This gives them time to build something really amazing. Inspire teenagers to have a go at a full-on art project and help them research cheap arts and crafts materials like paints and clay. Treasure Every Day Encourage your child to create a special record of each day of the holiday – even the most mundane details build into something remarkable. It could be one

Property
Introducing Adrian Dawson HullMag Property Columnist Hello readers and welcome to your new monthly property related column written by me; Adrian Dawson. I hope to bring news, information and updates from our industry. On thinking of a starting point for our articles, I thought it would be prudent to introduce myself and background so you can hopefully get to know me a little better; I own and manage an Estate Agency based in Hessle coving Hull & East Yorkshire. Having been in property most of my working life, through different and varied aspects I have gained a wealth of experience and to this day it still remains very much my passion as well as my vocation.
The property market is ever changing and with the now dare I say it “Brexit” it truly remains to be seen the impact this will have on the local property market. It really is too early to say what may or indeed may not happen next. The last thing I would ever do is unnecessarily scare-monger. In the short term from speaking with my experienced investors and property owners they are not worried and it is still very much business as usual, which of course is reassuring to hear. I look forward to writing for you and I would very much welcome any feedback or requests on particular topics related to property you would like me to correspond on in the coming months.
Adrian

Gardening for kids Use your own garden as an excuse to spend time with your family and you can all get some exercise while having fun. Planting tips and ideas l Choose bedding plants that will look promising as soon as they go in the ground. Pansies, geraniums and primroses are usually safe bets with pretty results. l Keep mess under control by getting your child to plant flowers in pots that can sit outside but don’t require lots of digging. The pot marigold can be planted in spring and within 10 weeks produces lots of flowers.
l Potted tomatoes. Fill a pot with fresh compost then sprinkle over a handful of tomato seeds. Add a little more compost then cover with cling film and secure with an elastic band. Leave by a window with light and warmth and keep the seeds watered. When the plants spout, put them into individual pots and keep them watered and fed. By early summer, when they are big enough, transfer to bigger pots in the garden. l Make a butterfly meadow. Butterflies like a variety of colours and nectar tastes but plant patches of the same flower rather than just one or two at a time. Try ‘wildflower’ or ‘meadow’ seed packs. Butterflies also like clover, buttercups and dandelions so don’t be afraid to let these flourish. Place large flat rocks around for butterflies to land on and a couple of shallow colourful dishes to catch water. .
General Gardening tasks for August The most important thing this month is to enjoy your garden; heady scents, glorious colours, an abundance of fruits and vegetables and hopefully more sunshine. What could be more enjoyable and satisfying than surveying the results of your hard work throughout the year?
l For something different and durable, sow cornflower seeds in one corner of your garden and wait for their vibrant bluey purple flowers spring up.
Watering Remember to water and feed your plants regularly, especially those in hanging baskets, pots or containers as well as climbers and roses growing against a sunny wall. Many a plant will not recover from a drought, so water regularly and do not resort to feast and famine.
l If your child wants to plant something from seed, keep up their interest by taking regular photos to chart their bloom’s progress as the weeks go by.
Water hydrangeas with hydrangea colourant for true blue hydrangeas next year.
Gardening in small outside spaces
l Ask a neighbour or elderly relative if you can help look after their garden. It’s still great fun and will bring great pleasure to someone else.
If possible, set up an automatic watering system for your vegetable plot, borders and even containers. They are worth their weight in gold and can work on a sensor system that detects how dry the soil is. Once you have one you will wonder why you did not install one years ago. Going on holiday will no longer involve wondering if your precious plants will survive a dry spell or paying someone else to hold a hose!
l Find a local community gardening project. You can learn a lot from other gardeners’ style of garden design while you’re all joining in.
If it stays warm and dry, water saving strategies include using bathwater and washing up water, provided they are neither too dirty or oily.
l If you don’t have any or very much garden space, try windowsill pots (herbs and small tomatoes your child can then help you cook with when they’re ready).
Projects for younger children l Easy grow flowers. Grow marigolds and sunflowers from seeds. They are easy to manage in most soils and provide colourful results to impress your little gardeners. l Painting pebbles. Decorate flower beds by lining them with pretty stones. Get your child to paint each pebble with a base colour then talk about ideas for patterns or pictures before letting them loose with child-friendly paints. When these are dry, paint over with varnish.
Projects for older kids l Create a children’s corner. Let your child have a small section of your garden to build a little rockery (clear away grass, arrange some large rocks and plant small plants, eg primroses or sedum ‘purple emperor’).
To Contact
Keep your pond topped up, free of pond weed and clean green algae can be toxic to pets. Weeding Boring but vital. Keep on top of weeds in borders, the vegetable garden and all your pots and containers. Little and often will reduce what will become a Herculean task if left to spiral out of control. Weeds not only look messy but use valuable moisture in the ground. The best and easiest way to weed is to use a Dutch hoe which will cut the weeds just below the surface. Weeding on a sunny day will ensure weeds left on the surface dry out and die in the warmth.

The Coolest Team in Hull and the Fastest Team
Sport in The World!
It’s a Pirates life for me! Hull Pirates are Hull’s number one ice hockey team! We play in the English Premier League after forming in the summer of 2015.
Here, we provide you with the latest news about our club. The Pirates have been progressing from strength-to-strength in the off-season as we prepare for the new campaign to get underway in September. On-the-ice, we have made a number of additions with a mixture of experienced players and youth making up our squad. Most recently, Slovakian forward Andrej Themar signed for the club after scoring 33 goals and assisted a further 37 in Norway. With the English Premier League having a rule that permits five non-British trained players per team, Themar joins Stanislav Lascek, Jaroslav Sarsok and player/head coach Dominic Osman as the club’s import players next season. Lascek joins the club from fellow Yorkshire and divisional rivals Sheffield Steeldogs. ‘Stano’ boasts a wealth of experience in both Europe and North America. The 30-year-old was drafted in round 5 by Tampa Bay Lightning in the National Hockey League in America in 2005. The forward posted very impressive point tallies in the years either side of the draft. For Chicoutimi

Saguenéens in the QMJHL, Lascek posted 18 goals and 72 assists in 53 games (90 total points) and then 47 goals and 88 assists (135 total points) in just 64 appearances. Lascek has also previously played in the AHL for Springfield Falcons and Norfolk Admirals and in the ECHL for Johnstown Chiefs (27 points in 25 games) and Mississippi Sea Wolves (21 points in 23 games). In addition to the import players, the Pirates have been keen to improve the British core of players in the roster and have made a number of top British signings ready for the new campaign. One of those top British additions is Ryan Watt. Playing for Basingstoke Bison last season, the forward registered 33 total points (10 goals and 23 assists) in 48 games and also picked up 113 penalty minutes. Watt has a wealth of experience in the EPL, having played for Basingstoke Bison, Bracknell Bees, Slough Jets and Swindon Wildcats. The forward also has experience of the Elite League, having played for the Braehead Clan during the 2012-13 season, winning the Gardiner Conference title.
Watt has experience of winning titles at EPL level, having won the league last season with Basingstoke Bison. In the 2008-2009 season, Watt picked up a silver medal for Great Britain under-20s at the World Junior Championships. Since 2006, only three seasons have not contained an award for the forward. In addition to Ryan Watt, Nathan Salem is a returning British player for next season after joining the Pirates late last season. The 24-year-old has had an instant impact since joining the Pirates from Telford in December 2015, registering 21 points (10 goals and 11 assists) in 24 games. With the season due to get underway around mid-September, Hull are set for a competitive season in which they will be hoping for silverware. All the Pirates’ home games are played at Hull Ice Arena.

FIONA’S FOOD FOR THOUGHT By Fiona Dwyer, broadcast journalist, PR & media consultant, slave to 2 children and a husband.
Cling Film & Foil - How do you unravel it? Did you know that most of us have been using cling film and aluminium film all wrong? Does the foil or cling film just fall out of the box whenever you’re trying to unravel it making it really difficult to cut, especially cling film because it just sticks to everything? Well, it’s been revealed by a video that’s gone viral on YouTube that the majority of us haven’t discovered the little cardboard tabs hidden at the side of every box. And here’s the thing! If you push them in it holds the roll in place! Simple really – but I’ve never even noticed them! Have you?
What is going on with the weather? The weather is playing havoc with my wardrobe! One day it’s sunny, the next it’s tipping it down with rain. Alternatively it will be sunny first thing, then rain by 11 o’clock – or vice versa! I’m currently going with layers because at least I can add or take off as necessary – but I must say, I wish it would just make up its mind. It’s supposed to be summer now. If only it felt like it!
Have you seen it yet? Congratulations to The Deep which has recently seen its first ever baby penguin hatch – and, of course, to the chick’s parents - Nessie and Shackleton. I’m not sure whether it’s a boy or a girl but, if they’re looking for a name, my daughter suggests Marvin or Marvina! Not sure where that came from but either one is as good a name as any. Apparently Marvina sounds like a lovely brand of chocolate! We’re planning on a visit soon and we can’t wait to see it!
