Top Ten Ways To Prepare Your Home For Winter It’s here again the first signs of winter and with temperature getting colder and the days getting shorter, I thought I would put together a few tips that will hopefully keep you warm and protect your home this winter. 1 – Check home insurance Check to make sure that your home insurance policy is up to date/scratch and that you’re covered for winter-related damage. Please don’t wait until it’s too late, before checking exactly what you are covered for! 2 – Insulate pipework Burst pipes are common during winter due to rapid freezing and thawing, potentially causing massive damage. The best way to potentially stop this from happening is to keep your pipes warm with lagging. 3 – Service your boiler A poorly maintained boiler wastes more energy and costs more, and it also runs the risk of leaking carbon monoxide. Always try and have your boiler serviced by a gas safe registered engineer. 4 – Insulation About a quarter of the heat in your house is lost through the roof, so having good loft and wall cavity insulation could keep the house warm with less energy used.

that’s stopping the heat from circulating properly. Bleeding the radiators releases the air, so radiators run more efficiently. 6 – Switch energy suppliers Give your energy supplier a call and see if you can be put onto a more appropriate energy tariff. Or indeed check a utility comparison site, there are many to choose from and it could save you a small fortune. 7 – Guttering As the autumn leaves fall, gutters and drainpipes will start to get filled with loose foliage. Make sure your gutters are completely free from grime and dirt to minimise water blockage. 8 – Tree trimming Having your trees trimmed will reduce the amount of foliage that will drop into the guttering, and will also reduce the buildup of snow on the tree that could cause damage from broken branches. 9 – No entry for draughts Check the edges of your doors and windows for draughts, and you can either seal these gaps with self-adhesive draught strips, or utilise a draught excluder. 10 – Bonus tip Stock up on hot chocolate. It doesn’t matter if it’s pouring down with freezing cold rain, in the middle of a blizzard or gale force winds, sitting down on the sofa with a mug of hot chocolate in winter is one of the best feelings ever.

Adrian

5 – Bleed the radiators If your radiators are colder at the top than they are at the bottom, then your radiators have trapped air inside them

Local News

‘Hull’s Mr Aviation” by Alex Slingsby For over a year I have been writing a book about my late grandfather Albert Neville Medforth, who was a keen pilot and aviation enthusiast. Once nicknamed ‘Hull’s Mr Aviation’, throughout the fifties, sixties and seventies he campaigned for a local air service to serve the people of Kingston-upon-Hull and its surrounding areas. He tirelessly fought through trial and tribulation to see his dream come to fruition. In the late fifties his enthusiasm for local aviation led to him to become involved with a former aerodrome at Hedon in the East Riding of Yorkshire, before later on founding an aerodrome at Paull, also in the East Riding in 1967.

For the longest time, the histories of these events remained vastly untold and only now with the release of this book will they be revealed. He was also a soldier during the Second World War and once carried the Queen’s Colour in front of the Lord Lieutenant of the East Riding of Yorkshire, during a parade of the 4th Battalion East Yorkshire Regiment in 1953. For many years afterward, he was writing his own book about these events. Sadly he did not finish it before his death, but in December 2014 I discovered a draft copy of his book. Since then I have

spent a great deal of time assembling something together using his writings. This is alongside original material I have written as a result of studying years of his correspondence and the meticulous diaries he kept. Over 1,500 individual documents relating to my grandfather’s aims were scanned into the computer and reviewed as part of the writing process. In essence, the book charts aviation progress in the East Riding and Kingston-upon-Hull area and my grandfather’s involvement throughout. The book - ‘The Hedon Aerodrome Saga: Death of an Airport’ has now been published. Whilst the topic of it is mainly about aviation, there are other topics discussed such as the Second World War. For example, included is a detailed account by an officer who served with the Duke of Wellington’s Regiment, during its stay in the Middle East in the Second World War. My grandfather happened to serve with this regiment. Ultimately I hope that from publishing this book, his legacy will be preserved. The Hedon Aerodrome Saga is available from Amazon priced £11.99

Events

Stage set for an exceptional Humber Mouth Hip Hop Shakespeare featuring BAFTA and MOBO award-winning hip-hop artist, writer, poet and historian AKALA (below), top selling crime writers including Val McDermid, an evening with Spiders from Mars drummer Woody Woodmansey (right), memoirs of major pop journalist Sylvia Patterson and a celebration of all things Star Trek, will be among those bringing their creations to life at next month’s Humber Mouth Festival. Marking the 400th anniversary of William Shakespeare’s death, Hull’s annual literature festival, now its 24th year, will be held at venues across the city between Friday 4 and Monday 14 November, bringing the city’s audiences of all ages a fortnight of great events.

Kicking off the festival with a special pre-festival event on Thursday 3 November, acclaimed writer and philanthropist Phil Redmond will host an evening to discuss his incredibly successful career so far and new novel Highbridge. Discussion is high on the agenda for 2016 with conversation evenings with Laura Barnett - author of Sunday Times bestselling The Versions of Us, crime heavyweight Mark Billingham, journalist Marcus Berkmann and human rights campaigner Sarah Khan who will discuss The Battle for British Islam. The festival, which is supported by Hull City Council, will also enjoy a whole host of musical talent of an international flavour with Galician culture -two Galician poets, a translator and a guitarist who will read and play various genres and crosses many musical borders including jazz, latin, bossa and folk. Substance will also present The Magnetic North, celebrating the creativity and cultural diversity of the North. Gracing 2016’s festival will be award-winning poet Andrew McMillan and highly praised local poet Dean Wilson. It will also play host to a fierce re-match between eight Hull and

London poets as they battle for wordsmith glory. A number of exciting and innovative projects by local artists have also been commissioned by Humber Mouth this year, including a diverse programme of workshops, revolutionary teacups, a concrete sonnet and spellbinding storytelling with a spooky edge. Shane Rhodes, programme director for Humber Mouth Festival, said: “This is one of our most diverse line-ups yet, and we’re proud to bring such big names to Hull. AKALA is consistently producing groundbreaking, exciting work, both independently and through the Hip-Hop Shakespeare company, and we’re delighted he’s joining us in the year he marks a decade in the music industry. “We’re not ones to shy away from difficult issues here at Humber Mouth, so we’re also proud to be opening up a number of discussions around extremism, art and culture in our two events focusing on Syria and perceptions of the country – it’s important people have a chance to engage in these discussions, especially in these difficult times when it seems like the world’s falling apart around us.” Councillor Terry Geraghty, Portfolio Holder for Leisure and Culture, said: “I’m impressed with the quality and variety of literary figures Humber Mouth Festival is attracting to the city. The programme has a brilliant mix of local, national and international talent. The city has put on some fantastic festivals this year, including the hugely popular Freedom Festival and Humber Mouth is yet more proof of Hull’s ability to provide a huge cultural offer and attract major artists.” The Children’s Humber Mouth Festival also takes place in various libraries around the city and features Carnegie Medal winning Theresa Breslin, a mystery writer and illustrator divulging the secrets of their skills, local writer Russ Litten hosting a surprising adventure through some unusual local words and a whole host of baby bounce and toddler dance events guaranteed to get little ones moving and shaking. To download the full programme and book tickets, visit www.humbermouth.com or call the Box Office on 01482 300 300.

Cruise month ... Many years ago we started with a cruise week and cruise lines offered special deals just for the week. Well now this has grown to a cruise month! Special offers are available year round when itineraries are launched. Generally this is when you gain the highest discount and then prices dip up and down from there onwards. The earlier you book allows you the biggest choice of cabins and airport options for flights, if you need to fly to join your ship. Cruising is very diverse - Lynne & I have enjoyed being on board more than 160 ships and there is truly something out there to suit everyone. There is also a great selection of adventure cruising & I would like to share something a little different. In search of stunning scenery & wildlife? Perhaps you have done Norway & Alaska, how about the Arctic if you are not wanting to fly, or Antarctica for an amazing experience with the Icebergs and the Penguins? Antarctica has been one of my great adventures and I can highly recommend the experience. This is an area to visit in our winter and we often get offers for single travellers without any supplement too for January departures. On my to do list is the North West Passage, there are only a handful of ships offer this 900 mile cruise of majestic waterways, lined with spectacular unspoilt landscapes. You need to have around 32 nights to spare for this voyage which takes place in our summertime. Cruising on the sea rather than travelling overland will enjoy the very best experience for all of the destinations mentioned above. Many destinations can be enjoyed by travelling overland or flying between places should you not wish to cruise, but, cruising offers a very relaxing way of seeing a variety of places during your holiday without having to pack and unpack as you travel along. River cruising to exotic areas of the world is a great option for seeing the sights and travelling in comfort. The Amazon, Burma, Vietnam & Cambodia and parts of India along with the rivers of North America including the mighty Mississippi. In you have plied the rivers in Europe and are looking for something different, a canal cruise gives you new destinations and waterways. It is a unique and leisurely experience. For example our All Inclusive French barge has just 11 luxurious cabins & serves superb gourmet food plus includes all of your drinks and excursions! At Marion Owen Travel we offer a full portfolio of holidays by all modes of transport so don’t hesitate to get in touch and let us organise your next life enriching adventure.

The Arts

When Hull Mag heard of an exciting Halloween collaboration between O-Ten Photography and Monster Minx FX, we just had to investigate further…! HM: So tell us how you met? O-Ten: I met Jade when I was employed as the official photographer for an event a few months ago in Hull. As soon as I saw Jade, I knew I had to arrange a photo shoot with her. We have worked on 2 shoots together prior to this collaboration, as she is not only an awesome special effects and prosthetics maker, but she is an awesome alternative model too. We get along very well. HM: Jade, what is it like working with O-Ten? Jade: I hadn’t modelled for a while so I enjoyed the experience, he’s a great laugh and a truly talented photographer! He’s excellent at coaxing the best out of me, it’s nice to meet a person with a lot of passion for his work. HM: Tell us about the collaboration? O-Ten: I love the film Donnie Darko and I was inspired by the famous ‘rabbit’ photograph by Helmut Newton which he shot in New York, so I thought it would be an amazing idea to combine the two. I asked Jade to create her version of the Donnie Darko mask and she loved the idea and challenge. HM: Jade, what inspired you to become a special effects artist? Jade: It was the film called Legend with Tim Curry playing the devil which blew my mind! I would watch old movies and think to myself “How do they do that?!” It was then I decided to study special effects at University and left with a degree; I felt very proud! HM: What was the process of creating the mask and how long did it take to complete? Jade: Firstly I sculpt from clay on a head block to form the mask mould. Once I’m happy with this, I make a plaster cast which, due to the complexity of the design, I had to create three pieces. Once the plaster cast is set, I make a latex mask from this. The ears of the mask have wires inserted, so I can re-shape them into position and the finishing touch is the painting, which gives it the 3D look. It takes 12 hours to sculpt ‘Frank’ from clay. Then due to all the further procedures it takes 3-4 days in total, which includes setting and drying times.

Jade: I love the mask and the images have turned out fantastic, Chris even made me a curry after the shoot! HM: What are your future plans? O-Ten: By the time your readers see this interview I will have photographed 80s synth pop icons OMD for their forthcoming album in 2017. I shot their photos for History of Modern album which you can still see on their website. Jade: Next year I am working on an incredible movie called Xisle (pronounced Exile), plus a Hull based horror movie called Pumpkin. Halloween is my busiest time and I shall be attending Hull’s Horror Con. I am always looking for new projects to work on. For further information: O-Ten - www.otenphotography.co.uk and Jade - www.monsterminx.co.uk

HM: We know Chris (O-Ten) is a massive Helmut Newton and Bailey fan from our previous interviews, who are your influences and why? Jade: My old unit tutor, Dan Tuck, believed that I had a true talent for designing, so he encouraged and pushed me, he was truly influential in my development. Also I am influenced by old horror movies such as Hellraiser, Nightmare on Elm Street and Bram Stoker’s Dracula with Gary Oldman, to name a few. HM: Are you both happy with the results? O-Ten: The mask is stunning and also Jade did a brilliant job at modelling her creation. So from O-Ten’s point of view, I love the results!

Plans for new sculpture location submitted Plans for a bespoke timepiece sculpture have today been submitted for Queens Gardens. If approved, Solar Gate would not only be a focal point within the city centre park, but also act as a sundial, highlighting key dates in the city’s history that will be placed as discs of etched stainless steel and integrated with york stone paving earmarked for the area.

be marked and celebrated. Mike Tonkin, Tonkin Liu said: “Through the alignment of aperture in its two vertical surfaces, Solar Gate marks precise times with light rather than with shadows. Light travels through two spaces, aligned with a specific sun angle, and lands as a disc of light on the ground, illuminating a stainless steel disc with written details of the significance of the corresponding time and date. “The time piece has been designed through computer programming to create a highly accurate alignment with specific solar angles relating to moments in the cultural calendar tailored to Hull. As with the experience of an eclipse, the waiting for the alignments brings the future, the past, and the present into play.

Solar Gate would also form part of the renovation of Queens Gardens, which will include a new grand central entrance through from the Rose Bowl. Work is scheduled to begin prior to Christmas, with completion planned in spring 2017. (NB. All other work to transform Queen’s Gardens will begin 2018 as part of the legacy programme).

“At night Solar Gate is illuminated with an ever changing lighting display where its delicacy and undulating geometry is revealed and experienced. “The advanced technology and the innovative undulating structure employs the latest fabrication techniques to make a deceptively delicate but very robust structure. “10m tall and 4m wide, the artwork is boat-like in plan, gate-like in elevation, mastlike in side elevation, with a taper to just 10cm. The artwork learns lessons from 500 million years of evolution in sea shell form to make a very strong very light piece produced with the latest digital technologies.”

The plans, which could see the 10m tall piece of art installed into a new spot at the south end of Queens Gardens, have been designed by award-winning architectural practice Tonkin Liu, made up of architects Mike Tonkin and Anna Liu (bios in notes). On each date, sunlight will shine through Solar Gate onto the specific disc and highlight that point in time, casting a shadow the space around it. This modern and unique piece has been amended for its new proposed location and the design now reflects the leafy surroundings of the gardens. In total, 24 memorable dates and times for events that have shaped our world and Hull’s local history, yet to be agreed, will

A formal decision for Planning Committee is likely to be made later this year. Wider plans for Queen’s Gardens, earmarked for 2018 start, include an impressive new-look, inspired by the 1950’s design including a new performance area and tribute to the late great Mick Ronson.

Health & Wellbeing

Massage for Health There’s no denying the power of bodywork. Regardless of the adjectives we assign to it (pampering, rejuvenating, therapeutic) or the reasons we seek it out (a luxurious treat, stress relief, pain management), massage therapy can be a powerful ally in your healthcare regimen. Experts estimate that upwards of ninety percent of disease is stress related. And perhaps nothing ages us faster, internally and externally, than high stress. While eliminating anxiety and pressure altogether in this fast-paced world may be idealistic, massage can, without a doubt, help manage stress. This translates into: • Decreased anxiety. • Enhanced sleep quality. • Greater energy. • Improved concentration. • Increased circulation. • Reduced fatigue. Furthermore, clients often report a sense of perspective and clarity after receiving a massage. The emotional balance bodywork provides can often be just as vital and valuable as the more tangible physical benefits.

Profound Effects In response to massage, specific physiological and chemical changes cascade throughout the body, with profound effects. Research shows that with massage: • Arthritis sufferers note fewer aches and less stiffness and pain. • Asthmatic children show better pulmonary function and

Please remember to mention

increased peak air flow. • Burn injury patients report reduced pain, itching, and anxiety. • High blood pressure patients demonstrate lower diastolic blood pressure, anxiety, and stress hormones. • Premenstrual syndrome sufferers have decreased water retention and cramping. • Preterm infants have improved weight gain. Research continues to show the enormous benefits of touch—which range from treating chronic diseases, neurological disorders, and injuries, to alleviating the tensions of modern lifestyles. Consequently, the medical community is actively embracing bodywork, and massage is becoming an integral part of hospice care and neonatal intensive care units. Many hospitals are also incorporating on-site massage practitioners and even spas to treat postsurgery or pain patients as part of the recovery process.

Modern American Square dancing is a very sociable activity for all ages. Recommended by the British Heart Foundation, it provides good physical and mental exercise. You only need to be mobile and willing to participate in a fun activity. It’s ideal for people without partners as well as for couples. There are no complicated steps to learn and no long routines to remember. Even if you think you have 2 left feet, bring them both along and have a go. You’re bound to have a good night dancing to modern music and the exciting choreography of Yorkshire’s youngest caller.

Motoring shores to see. Many famous drivers past and present regularly attend, like Sir Stirling Moss and John Surtees, and this year David Coulthard competed in the Austin A35 race alongside current British Touring Car Championship racers. Multiple Le Mans winner Tom Kristensen took an Aston Martin to victory in the Kinrara Trophy race, despite not having sat in the car until the morning of the race.

Welcome to Matters of Motoring Moment, HullMag’s new occasional motoring page, where Richard Hilditch will take a look at matters of motoring interest both local and national, starting with reflections on this year’s Goodwood Revival meeting.

Away from the track there are hundreds of stalls selling everything from classic cars and automobilia to vintage clothing. There’s even a retro-style funfair, complete with Wall of Death, although Guy Martin was somewhere else! The historic vehicle car park is almost worth the trip on its own. It’s an absolutely brilliant event, although a long way from home for most of us. If you’ve even a spoonful of petrol in your veins, I can guarantee you’ll love it.

Seeing historic racing and sports cars sitting in a museum does very little for me; I once went to the National Motor Museum at Beaulieu and didn’t bother going in. I’d much rather see them racing and doing what they were designed for, and the Goodwood Revival provides that by the bucketful.

The next Goodwood Revival runs from: 8 - 10 September 2017

The Revival meeting is a three day festival of historic racing which has been held every September since 1998 at the Goodwood circuit in West Sussex, for cars that would have raced there in its first period of motor sport activity from 1948 to 1966, when it was closed for safety reasons. The circuit and its buildings have been painstakingly restored and upgraded, whilst successfully retaining the period feel of the place. It’s also a celebration of all things retro and vintage, with many of the 70,000 plus spectators (yes, you read that right) who attend on the Saturday and Sunday donning period dress, sometimes fancy dress, for the occasion. The whole thing amounts to a trip back in time, well worth making the journey from our Northern

We’re on the move! The answer to all your Insurance needs on your doorstep!

As a result of the local people taking the firm very much to their hearts, leading East Riding Insurance Broker, Hedon Insurance, have moved from their Hallgate office to much larger premises on King Street. The need for larger premises so early in a location’s development is unprecedented in the company’s 50 years of trading and is, believes the broker’s new manager, Richard Atkin, due to the way that the company markets itself in the area. ‘We have positioned ourselves in the market place as your local insurance broker – and we really are. We are there, where you need us - on the high street – and we are happy for people to just pop in when it suits them to discuss what’s on their mind with regards to their insurance.’ As well as enabling the firm to considerably increase their sales area, the move will also see one their partner firms, the ICF Group (Financial Services) Ltd, taking its own space within the office. The ICF Group is one the region’s leading firms of independent financial advisers and mortgage brokers, and has been trading for almost 20 years. Andrew Walters, a director at both firms, is excited at the prospect of having a one stop money shop on Cottingham’s high street for the first time in many years – possibly ever. ‘As a Cottingham resident, I can see that there is likely to be a demand in the area for high quality investment and mortgage advice as well as the other related services that we offer and I am pleased that we have been able to join forces on this venture’. The new office is now open on King Street.

Gardening

Gardening in November With October almost gone and November fast approaching – what can we expect from the weather! There is always a chance of frost now which could very well bring an end to your summer displays in some parts of East Yorkshire. Now is a good time to insulate greenhouses with material such as Bubble Film which will save on those fuel costs. General If you didn’t manage to give the outside of the greenhouse a wash down last year, it would prove very worthwhile to try and do it on a warm day during this month removing any algae and grime that has built up preventing light getting to the plants inside. The use of a hosepipe, using a slow spray, and brush washer on each glazed panel would prove ideal for this job.
It’s also a good idea to insulate greenhouses by using bubble air insulation film. Retaining warmth in the greenhouse is important so it is best to close vents by mid-afternoon. As temperatures drop houseplants should be watered less frequently. It’s also advisable that plants being over-wintered under-glass are checked regularly to make sure they are keeping healthy and free from disease, which can be done by removing any dead flowers along with leaves that may become discoloured.

Borders Perennial plants that are past their best should be cut right down, remembering to clear away all remains and added to the compost heap. Why not plant wallflowers in the spaces left as they will give strong, bright colour, or tulips could be planted amongst the wallflowers to give a good contrast of colour. Of course, any suitable perennials or shrubs could always be planted instead. Flowers Early sowings of geranium seed can be made, remembering to provide a minimum temperature of 15ºC (60ºF) that should be maintained for growing on the plants. Sowings can also be made of cactus. Cut down and lift dahlias and cannas once the top foliage has been frosted. Pot chrysanthemums should be kept moist and remember to deadhead regularly as this will keep the flowers coming. Remove cyclamen leaves that are yellowing along with faded flowers by pulling them from the corm, however, to prevent leaves from turning yellow keep in a cool, light place. Plants that flower over winter must continue to be watered, but remember to cut down on the watering for other subjects. Bulbs

Planting spring bulbs should be completed as early in the month as possible, ensuring they are planted at the correct depth. Should their final planting space not be quite prepared, then why not plant the bulbs in large pots and then they can be

Clean and disinfect pots and trays ready for next season. Plan your garden for next year, order plants and seeds early to avoid disappointment. As temperatures start to fall birds will appreciate regular feeding too.

planted out at a later date.

Bulbs such as crocus, tulip and narcissi should all be planted into bowls by now for placing in a cool situation, given cover protection from any heavy rain so that development can begin. Fruit Soft fruit can be planted in prepared ground that has well rotted manure or garden compost incorporated.

Lawns If weather conditions are still mild and the grass is still growing give it a light trim; also continue to remove any fallen leaves that have blown onto the lawn. A handy piece of equipment to have for removing leaves (plus other garden debris) not only from the lawn but paths, between plants is an electric garden blower and vacuum but that’s the easy way. Why not considerding killing two birds with one stone and gathering all the fallen leaves in your garden to create your own leaf mould which is the equivelant of gardening gold-dust. A hollow-tined aerator can be used for spiking lawns and grit can be brushed into the holes for improved drainage. Keep off the lawn if soil conditions are wet or frosty.

Canes that provided fruit of blackberries this year can be pruned to soil level and new ones tied into their place. Canes that are very long should be trained back down towards the soil or, to ensure the stem of the longest length is left, wind this in circles. Tips of canes may be buried in the soil to root which will then form new plants. Ripe apples should be picked and, depending on the variety, either be eaten or stored in a cool, dry place until perfect. Glue bands can be wrapped around fruit trees. Vegetables Sowings can be made outdoors of broad bean Aquadulce Claudia,

Gardening the variety Sutton can also be sown now but must be given the protection of cloches. Continue planting suitable varieties of garlic such as Solent Wight until the middle of the month. Crowns of globe artichoke should be protected from frost by wrapping straw around the base of the plants. For an early variety of mange tout pea the variety Oregon Sugar Pod can be sown under cloches this month. However, if in colder areas it might be worth waiting until spring to make sowings. Potted up herbs should be brought indoors for the winter. Overcrowded clumps of chive can be lifted and divided. As this is such a useful herb for garnishes and flavouring all year round why not grow small clumps in pots on the kitchen windowsill. For a continuous supply of lettuce crops during winter plant varieties, such as Vaila-Winter Gem, in pots, borders or growbags and grow on in a warm greenhouse. Protect outside crops with either Envirofleece, which is very popular with vegetable enthusiasts, or Enviromesh which acts as a barrier to garden pests as well as providing some frost protection.

As if this wasn’t bad enough City also face two months without a recognised left-back as Andy Robertson is injured and it is a choice of moving Clucas from his acclaimed midfield role or bringing in the untried Man Utd reserve James Weir or 17 year old Josh Tymon, One positive is Michael Dawson’s return from injury so central defence will be stronger even though we now lack quality full backs on either flank. Elmo is not a good right back and even more so when he has no support elsewhere on the right as was the case at Bournemouth.

We just hope the organisation and fortitude from August can be restored by Mike Phelan (pictured above). It is ironic that after so many weeks waiting for Phelan’s permanent contract we lose so heavily. Let’s hope he doesn’t go the way of Bobby Collins? He was universally praised as caretaker back in 1977 then disastrous as manager. Phelan does have a lot more going for him however and we hope that things improve during the weeks coming up to Christmas as these are the games where points can be taken from the likes of Stoke , Sunderland and West Brom in Premier League survival league. Defeats against Liverpool and Arsenal are expected but points are available from most sides outside of the relatively established top 8. Maybe we will see the return of Warren Joyce as his assistant for instance and the club have lost 5-6 coaching and fitness staff since July and severely understaffed for a socalled Premier League team. This as ever gets us back to the Allams. They need to agree a deal for a reasonable fee and move us on to new owners whilst we still remain attractive to potential buyers. They had a window of

To Contact

opportunity from May till August to sell the club whilst City hadn’t played a match and it was a clean slate for new owners. They would purchase a club with lots of Sky money coming in and potential to do well in the Premier League. The American deal and first Chinese deal fell through and by mid-October allegedly four consortiums are competing for a club with an asking price of £120 million excluding the freehold on the stadium and site. As weeks go by and if form does not pick up will anyone invest £150 Million in Hull City? How much are we worth locked into a relegation battle or relegated? Just as soon as people starting to sniff the money they’ll all depart again. If relegated with £100 million of debt, just10, 000 fans and key players out of contract the club will be worth a fraction of the current asking price. Please get a deal done and don’t drag it any further, the longer it goes on there is less chance of it happening unless they suddenly pick up 10-20 points before Christmas. A deal also needs to be made quickly to get key players such as Robert Snodgrass and Jake Livermore (pictured top) signed up before the next transfer window. There will be tempting offers from rivals for these players and possibly Abel Hernandez (pictured right) from Steve Bruce. Do they take the cash or risk losing them for free in June. The longer the takeover saga continues the less likely it is that key players will commit. The club also requires further squad strengthening as the current weakness at full back emphasises. Last but not least it is worth considering that I have now been coming to support this club for forty years this month and how so much has changed about football and with Hull City in this time. First Division/Premier League football

seemed such a forlorn hope. Would City ever reach this or where we destined to remain at the lower end of Division 2/ Championship, a lower division struggler or just go under as so often the case? Now we have been a Premier League regular on and off since 2008 it must be said that the thrill has gone for most of us. Compare the anticipation of Sheffield Wednesday fans to us for the play-offs. They sell 40,000 tickets and are on a promotion high whereas we have 10,000 unsold seats. We all like being a big club for once in our history but struggling to win ten games, exorbitant prices, being laughed at by people watching Match of the Day or within the media and the Premier League circus of egos and greed are not all we dreamed of all those years ago. The Allams have also killed this dream for thousands who no longer attend at all so let’s just hope we can soon have a takeover and new enthusiastic owners can restore the sagging spirits of Hull City fans everywhere? We are in the club’s golden age yet few feel this at the moment.

Words by Woody Mellor

Just as we thought things were looking rosy reality sinks in and we are back in a struggle to avoid relegation. Seven points from the first four games has been followed by four heavy defeats including a 6-1 rout at Bournemouth.

FIONA’S FOOD FOR THOUGHT By Fiona Dwyer, broadcast journalist, PR & media consultant, slave to 2 children and a husband.

Slug Explosion I’ve been wondering why there are so many slugs in my garden. Every evening when I step outside there are at least six slugs on the patio and I have to hop over them to avoid squashing them! It’s like having a little slug family! My cats don’t have the same fears as I do – but they are obviously trying to protect my marigold pots which are looking decidedly worse for wear, I can tell you! Anyway, it appears that last year’s wet summer, followed by one of the warmest winters we’ve had on record, has created a generation of sleepless slugs. The weather wasn’t cold enough for them to hibernate, hence this apparent slug “explosion.” I keep thinking about the slug student in Monsters University. You know, the one who gets off the bus to slither to class at the beginning of term and when he finally gets there the caretaker tells him the school year is over! I know they’re not a gardener’s best friend but I think they’re pretty cool!

City of Culture Just Around the Corner Now that the programme for the first three months of 2017 has been announced, I’m getting really excited. It’s just fantastic that Hull is being talked about all over the UK and the rest of the world as a must-see destination. The one million visitors it expects to attract will be great for businesses, theatres, music venues and galleries and once all the work in the city centre has been completed, businesses will hopefully be able to take advantage of the benefits and recoup any losses they have suffered. It’s been hard for them and hard for us to navigate our way around. I can’t wait for the huge fireworks display on January 1st. I’m still sad that Hull New Theatre won’t be ready until September but there’s a great programme at Hull Truck. About 15 years ago I remember saying that give it 10 years and Hull will be the next Leeds or Sheffield. Well, that time is now – so let’s give it all the support we can and welcome the influx of visitors, who, when they see how great Hull is, will surely come back again and again!
