ELECTRIC CHARGING POINTS SWITCHED ON IN HESSLE “Many modern motor vehicles are being designed and built to run on various innovative sources of power, from electric cars, to hybrids and even bio-fuels. “The council is keen to support the choices of residents and visitors who seek to be more sustainable in their method of transport and the local transport plan is making provision, not just for electric cars, but for walking, cycling and public transport.”
New charging points for electricpowered vehicles have been switched on at two car parks in Hessle, following installation by East Riding of Yorkshire Council. Working with local ward members and with a contribution from Hessle Town Council, the points, which cost circa £17,000, will provide free electricity to help encourage residents and visitors to make the switch from petrol and diesel vehicles to using electric vehicles. The points are located at Swinegate Car Park and in the Hessle Town Hall Car Park on South Lane and each will charge two vehicles at a time. Funded through the authority’s third local transport plan, the charging points will support the increasing number of trips made using electric cars and reduce harmful road-related carbon emissions, benefitting the local environment. Councillor Chris Matthews, cabinet portfolio holder for infrastructure, highways and emergency planning, said: “The council is pleased to have switched these points on and to have joined the national network of charging points and plugging a gap along the East Coast.
The council is also close to completing a similar project in Bridlington, allowing residents and visitors with electric vehicles to drive from the Humber Bridge to the popular seaside resort, with the charging point located at the Palace Car Park on Quay Road. For further information about the council’s local transport plan, visit www.eastriding.gov.uk Photo: Councillor Chris Matthews, cabinet portfolio holder for infrastructure, highways and emergency planning at East Riding of Yorkshire Council, at the charging point in Hessle.

It’s All About You
MOTIVATIONAL ADVICE FROM AWARD-WINNING BUSINESS COACH PAM FEATHERSTONE
HOW TO BREAK AWAY FROM GROUNDHOG DAY
We’ve all seen the film and sadly many of us live doing the same thing day in, day out all of our lives. Half the time we don ‘t even notice it, then we wonder why we never move forward with anything, whether on a personal or business level. In fact one of the first things I address with my clients, who invariably tell me they never have enough time to do their work let alone anything else, is their work/life balance. It’s something I believe passionately in. There’s no point in working yourself to death if you’re not spending any quality time with your husband, your wife or your children, never seeing your friends or never doing the things that you most enjoy. Managing your time so that you make the most effective and efficient use of it is essential. And as this time of year, in particular, is always a challenge for working parents who are juggling childcare throughout the 6 week summer break, I thought a few pointers might stop you from dropping a ball.
Of course, you know what I’m going to say! Planning is the key! Here are some things you could try! Get yourself a 6 week chart and plot out when you are going on holiday, what days out you and the children are going to have and where you are going, what organized activities have you booked them in for? Try to team up with a couple of other parents who are having similar child care nightmares and see if you can help each other out – and put them on your chart so you know when it’s your turn. Remember to plan in time for yourself – even if it’s half an hour reading, going for a walk, having a bubble bath, going to the gym. Last of all, don’t feel guilty and beat yourself up about not spending the entire 6 weeks with your little ones. Make sure the time you spend with them is quality time, filled with fun, excitement and laughter – and cherish the memories. We’ll do more about the benefits of planning your time in the next issue. It’s not rocket science but most of us are too caught up in our hectic lives to see that we can make some small changes which can have a massive and lasting impact on our lives. And once you’ve mastered time, you will wonder what other areas of your life you can improve!

Funding Secured for Humber Street A £1.4m project to regenerate part of the Fruit Market will now go ahead thanks to a successful bid to the Coastal Communities Big Lottery Fund. Hull City Council has worked in partnership with Wykeland Beal to secure funding £800,000 for the refurbishment of 1,633m2 of empty former warehouse space on Humber Street in the Fruit Market.
The council will provide match funding for this scheme that will deliver former warehouse conversions, extensions, refurbishment and change of use. At a total project cost of £1.493m, 10 warehouses will transform into eight units of flexible space for galleries, offices, digital, grow on spaces and independent retail/restaurant/ café uses. Developments will retain the unique industrial heritage architecture of the Fruit Market as a reminder of the contrasting buildings and lifestyles that first created it.
Market to become a vibrant cultural, creative, visitor and business location in the heart of the City. “We are delighted that today’s announcement will help support and deliver the long term vision for the Fruit Market”. The scheme received planning approval on 2 July and the refurbishments are due to be completed by the end of the year. A related planning approval for number’s 12 to 18 Humber Street and three to four Pier Street received planning approval on 30 July. With this approval, the refurbishment will extend along Humber Street.
Bringing grant funding, public and private investment and expertise together will facilitate the growth of the creative sector in the area. Promoting networks, skill pools and links to the Centre for Digital Innovation (C4DI) will help operators commercialise and develop new income streams. Councillor Steven Bayes, Portfolio Holder for Visitor Destination and City of Culture said: “We’re delighted to have secured this funding from the Coastal Communities Fund and the council have committed to co-invest in developing creative industries by match funding the bid. “This is a sign of the growing recognition of the Fruit Market as an area of arts, culture, business and innovation within the wider region”. A spokesperson on behalf of Wykeland Beal Limited said: “We have worked in partnership with the Council to secure this funding. It’s an exciting time for Hull’s Fruit

Around The Humber
HUMBER RESCUE:
The lifeboats under the Humber Bridge. Humber Rescue (an independent charity) provide fast response rescue boats on the rivers of the Humber Estuary, an area of approximately 540 square miles which includes the Rivers Trent, Ouse, Hull and Humber. The Estuary is one of the most dangerous navigable rivers in the world and it comes as no surprise that many experienced navigators have been caught out by shifting sands and incredibly strong currents, here’s how it all began..
There is a common misconception that Humber Rescue is an RNLI station but this is certainly not the case, whilst we do work alongside teams from our flank stations (RNLI Spurn Point and Cleethorpes) we are an independent charity who strive to raise the necessary funds to keep our boats afloat and it costs us approx £60k per year to run our voluntary service which offers challenges as you can imagine. The River Humber is one of the busiest and fastest-growing trading areas in Europe. Almost one quarter of the UK’s seaborne trade passes through the Humber; this includes 25 per cent of the country’s natural gas and 25 per cent of its refined petroleum products. Humber Rescue was formed in 1990, prior to this there was no such life saving provision in the area, which makes their response team almost invaluable.
The need for a rescue service on the River Humber that was available round the clock became increasingly apparent following the withdrawal of the pilot launch from Hull (Minerva Pier) where it had previously been available for incidents on the river on a 24 hour basis. An appeal organised by BBC Radio Humberside and the Hull Daily Mail in 1989 raised sufficient funds to purchase a boat, trailer and launch vehicle and Humber Rescue was launched in April 1990.
www.humber-rescue. org.uk/
The first incident was attended two days after the boat was delivered and in the first nine months 27 incidents were attended. By June 2006 a total of 1,000 incidents had been attended. 2010 was Humber Rescue’s busiest year so far with 120 callouts, followed by 111 in 2011. The Humber Rescue fast response boats are crewed by a dedicated team of volunteers who bring a diverse range of skills and experience with them. They respond 24 hours a day, seven days a week, at any time in any weather.

Local News
Redeveloping Hull – New Initiatives Following on from the previous article on some of the eyesores to remove before 2017 (at the very latest) I will look at some of the latest proposals to actually redevelop Hull. There have been a host of planning proposals over the past decade and many have been on hold through the recession or limited funding for projects within Hull. I would imagine there as still been comparable plans coming to fruition in other cities despite the recession but maybe the times are a changing. The 2017 City of Culture announcement and Siemens finally committing to the city could be the stimulus to get things moving. Thankfully there has been positive recent news with the proposal to build both a £42 million conference/music venue and a new 4 star hotel on the derelict land between Princes Quay and Ferensway. This should be an exciting new venture for the city though this is tempered by the fact it will not be ready for 2017 and also the question of whether a 3500 venue is big enough? The project is seen as the legacy of the ‘City of Culture’ but Hull will not have any significant venues for this year so pipe dreams of bringing the Brits or BAFTA’s to the city will be even more of a forlorn hope. The other issue is the capacity. A 3,500 seater venue will not attract the biggest stars to the city. It’s better than what we have at the moment but won’t draw the biggest acts from playing at Leeds or Sheffield Arena. Saying that could Yorkshire support three venues of 8,000+? We’d love something like Leeds Arena but can we attract people to Hull instead of these established venues and could we fill this regularly? Maybe the conferences and exhibitions may be the main draw and if the city wishes to attract the really big acts then they should revive gigs at the KC Stadium? This would of course be down to the Allam’s and it would be a massive sea change in the relationship between them and the council to see 2017 events here but it is the obvious location for the big events of the year. If any other new proposals are to benefit from the City of Culture then they’ll need to get on with things for a change. There are now only two and half years to get plans passed and projects built. Typically this positive news is counter balanced by the suggestion that the A63 Castle Street improvement may not be completed by 2017. Maybe another year of discussions
Please remember to mention
before the diggers arrive! Let’s hope the proposed walkway from Princes Quay to the Marina will be completed by 2017. If we can’t have a better road system by this team at least have the opportunity for residents to cross the dual carriageway to the Fruit Market and Marina where we would imagine many of the 2017 activities will be based. Residents had the opportunity to vote on designs of the proposed walkway earlier in the year but nothing has yet been selected. Lets hope that something can be agreed fairly soon and this can proceed irrelevant of the A63 scheme planning delays as the bulk of this years festivals will once again be the other side of the dual carriageway and there are also new plans for the Fruit Market itself. Hull-based developers Wykeland and housebuilder Beal Homes were awarded preferred bidder status by Hull City Council to deliver a regeneration programme in the area. This would involve housing, an art gallery and warehouses being refurbished for new activities. I would like to hope that existing facilities such as ‘Fruit’ will continue as before. The Fruit Market area has become a creative hub for the city but this has come from entrepreneurialism, trying out new ideas and developing shows with initially low crowds yet low overheads, using the empty warehouses. If rents or lease agreements are increased as part of redevelopments then you won’t see writers groups or local bands any more as it won’t pay the bills. I would imagine it would cost far less to put bands on at Fruit than at the recently re-opened Blue Lamp Club which sadly failed to sustain itself again. Hopefully the latest proposals will build on what is already happening at the Fruit Market not hinder something which already works yet would benefit further from easier access to the rest of the city.
To add to the Fruit Market proposals there has also been the announcement that planning permission has been granted for the £15 million C4DI project. This will be a new complex for start-up digital firms and the development also includes the construction of a new public amphitheatre in the old Central Dry Dock. So along the A63 there could be lots of new developments over the next couple of years. Pity the road could still be just as congested and you may have a lot of time to see things develop whilst sat in the traffic.

Gardening
The August Garden The most important thing this month is to enjoy your garden; heady scents, glorious colours, an abundance of fruits and vegetables and hopefully more sunshine. What could be more enjoyable and satisfying than surveying the results of your hard work throughout the year? Watering Remember to water and feed your plants regularly, especially those in hanging baskets, pots or containers as well as climbers and roses growing against a sunny wall. Many a plant will not recover from a drought, so water regularly and do not resort to feast and famine. Water hydrangeas with hydrangea colourant for true blue hydrangeas next year.
Trees, shrubs and climbers: Deadheading Carry on cutting back perennials and deadhead all dying and spent flowers on annuals, roses and shrubs; not only will your garden look immeasurably tidier, but the plant will be prevented from putting energy into the seed and may be encouraged to reflower. When deadheading roses, cut the stem down with sharp secateurs; just breaking off old flowerheads will leave the rose vulnerable to infection. It’s too late to spray roses for blackspot now - once established spraying will not help. Pick off infected leaves and burn; do not put them on a compost heap where the spores will spread the disease.
If possible, set up an automatic watering system for your vegetable plot, borders and even containers. They are worth their weight in gold and can work on a sensor system that detects how dry the soil is. Once you have one you will wonder why you did not install one years ago. Going on holiday will no longer involve wondering if your precious plants will survive a dry spell or paying someone else to hold a hose! If it stays warm and dry, water saving strategies include using bathwater and washing up water, provided they are neither too dirty or oily. Keep your pond topped up, free of pond weed and clean green algae can be toxic to pets.
Pruning Trim back lavender and rosemary after flowering without cutting too far into the old wood and summer prune wisteria by shortening wispy sideshoots to about 20cm. Soak the soil with a high potash fertiliser if your wisteria’s flowering performance was a bit feeble.
Weeding Boring but vital. Keep on top of weeds in borders, the vegetable garden and all your pots and containers. Little and often will reduce what will become a Herculean task if left to spiral out of control. Weeds not only look messy but use valuable moisture in the ground. The best and easiest way to weed is to use a Dutch hoe which will cut the weeds just below the surface. Weeding on a sunny day will ensure weeds left on the surface dry out and die in the warmth.
Collect seed heads Save seeds from the seed heads of hardy annuals, perennials, bulbs, rock plants, trees and shrubs. Growing plants from seeds you have collected is fantastically rewarding, but you need to be vigilant; seed heads have a nasty habit of ripening and popping whilst your back is turned. Collect when nearly ripe - just as they are turning brown. Snip them off, put them in a paper bag, label and hang somewhere cool, dark and dry.
Bulbs, flowers and containers: Plant autumn flowering bulbs and start to plant spring flowering bulbs, especially tulips, daffodils, alliums, iris and crocus. Always use the side bulbs of tulips and daffodils as they make perfectly good bulbs in their own right. Plant specially prepared hyacinth bulbs for Christmas. Put poinsettias in the dark for 14 hours a day and full light for the remaining 10 hours to encourage the formation of those cheery festive red bracts. Birds Birds need fresh water for bathing and drinking, especially during hot and dry spells, so keep supplies plentiful and regularly changed. Throw out mouldy food on bird tables and remember that birds cannot digest milk - it can kill them.
Please remember to mention
Take cuttings Cuttings of perennials and bedding plants will root well at this time of year and quickly become strong enough to overwinter inside. Train a long flexible shoot to ground level, cut a shallow sloping slit in it, dust the cut surfaces with hormone rooting powder, peg down to hold in place in soil enriched with a little potting compost and wait for it to root. Trim hedges Keep hedges neat and under control for both their appearance and good relations with the neighbours!

Local People - Local Stories
Michelle: Her Story.. Life has always been incredibly different for people living with the inherent knowledge that, somehow, their post-natal gender is not quite right and how they perceive themselves to be. In the past the impact of this ‘difference’ has had devastating outcomes for the person concerned – society has had low levels of tolerance as they encounter people that don’t always fit into the normative precepts that society demands. From birth onwards, society proceeds to code and further program just how children should fit the ‘normal’ stereotype. From very early on we are designated roles and functions, and these are reinforced with allocated colours for both boys and girls, as well as family scripted statements around femininity and masculinity. As you can imagine coping with having one gender’s thoughts and feelings whilst inhabiting a physical body that doesn’t quite marry up, must be incredibly difficult and alienating. Add this to the fact that as the body matures, the person feels further cast adrift and this can lead to longterm depression and potentially suicide.
Michelle was about eight years old when he realised, as Michael, something was not quite right and his intuition warned him that it was something that he would somehow have to keep secret. In his younger years, Michael knew, absolutely, that he would never be able to tell anyone or share how his inner half felt. “There was a vault door, and, it was like, right, this is my secret, I’ve got to keep it to myself.” Michelle is now 55 and she explained that as a child, she had never heard of words such as transsexual or transvestite - and even if she had they would be stigmatising as they seem to dictate the extreme difference that described the world he was living in – it must be serious if society has to invent such words. So, keeping it to his and herself, not fully understanding the confusing thoughts, he knew that he was intrinsically she. The emotional pressures upon her were immense and in order to seek release, she found solace every weekend while she was growing up by looking through pictures of well-dressed, attractive women in the News of The World, each week hoping for stories of men dressed as women. From this struggle and reflection, Michelle began to learn a little more about her thoughts. However, she had to discover this on her own, which is something she hopes she can help to change for the lives of others through her Trans-awareness discussions in which she likes to fully interact with the group. “I just want to make it accepted” she says. A few years later, Michelle, who was formerly known as Mike, met and fell in love with a woman who would go on to become her wife, who she told early in the relationship about her feelings. “Because she was such a lovely person who made me feel so safe, I started to build a life with her, and we worked well together as a good team.” The relationship gave something new to Michelle, and they both cared for each other immensely, with Michelle then going on to propose to the woman she describes as ‘an absolute rock’. “I asked her to marry me, and, although she knew about the other side of me, she kind of accepted it, even though neither of us knew quite why, or what this implied.”

From this touching disclosure, Michelle went on to describe how they built a happy life together, in which they visited many places and enjoyed a very nice life. Every fortnight, she would dress up and have what she called her little ‘Michelle time’, in which she felt she could be who she wanted to be - who she really was. This then led to the birth of Michelle, and at 38, she described the feelings as ‘getting stronger’. As she needed an outlet, she bravely rang up a pub called the Vauxhall Tavern (which to this day is still a good place to come out) asking if they had transvestites in. When they replied that they did, she went along one weekend and found herself semi-accepted. Michelle then couldn’t wait to tell her wife about all this, but unfortunately this signalled the beginning of the end for their relationship as she couldn’t comprehend why, and what, Michelle had done and why she needed to go out. As Michelle described: “The power of the other person inside her was just too much.” To put it simply, she had to go and be herself. Sadly, after a few years, the couple split up, yet the bond was so strong, they kept in touch, and still have an incredibly strong friendship to this day. An increasingly confident Michelle ventured out to different places at the weekend. She would visit busy city-centres such as Leeds and Manchester dressed up as a woman, and from these places she met people enduring similar experiences and they became close friends. These relationships encouraged Michelle to reflect on her life in development. “I realised I had changed my life without those around me even realising it, and I wanted everyone in my life to understand just how much I appreciated their support and friendship.” Her growing confidence allowed her to visit the places she wanted to go to as well as the obvious, more accepting venues. “I went onto the gay scene, but I also went to ‘straight places’ as Michelle, and it went from strength to strength, which is how my life has been going for the past 15 years.” She has found herself being accepted by people who may not always have been known as the most tolerant. This was helped by the ten years working in night clubs taking photos as everyone got to know her.
In the early days as Michelle, she took a bold step and opened her salon, Body Beautiful, with a gay friend in 2003, in which, Janice, a close friend, managed and now owns the business within the salon. “I used to go most Saturdays to do my beauty work which she loved, it was like having a Wendy house at the bottom of her garden,” she says. Around the same time, Michelle invented an anti-wrinkle satin pillow which she has sold world-wide since its conception. Feel free to check out www.thebeautypillow.co.uk. Time, whilst being difficult has rewarded her with a new confidence and positive outlook and, when she reflects on her journey, she realises just how far she has come. She started her working life as a shipwright and did this for twelve years. After the place she used to work at had been closed for ten years, she went along to the reunion for the shipyard as Michelle, and found that around 80% of the people were accepting of her. It hasn’t just stopped

Local People - Local Stories there, with bouncers and club managers similarly accepting her for who she really is. Michelle goes on to say how truly grateful she is for them doing so. Life beyond the shipyard saw the next 22 years running a kitchen-fitting business, which she described as very successful, which made Mike feel good about himself. “Now, I want devote the rest of my life to being a proud businesswoman and be as successful as my former self,” she added. After leaving her job as a shipwright, and whilst running the kitchen-fitting business, Michelle went on to do many different things, bravely pushing the boundaries of what she, as a transvestite woman, could stereotypically do. “I was part of a company that facilitated talks all around the country, I was a director of the company and feel we helped change a lot of people’s perceptions.” She went on to deliver these sessions for many years, and is hoping to get back into it soon, as she stated, it really did help change opinions of people regarding transsexuals, and transvestites. “The talks I want to do are from the heart. I want people to ask me questions about my authentic history.” A woman of incredible energy, Michelle then went on run her own sandwich bar with a close friend who is now also running a successful web and event company. She poignantly describes her life as; “Salmon, swimming against the stream.” As she felt she was a transvestite woman in a very intimidating world that prided herself with not having a ‘chip on her shoulder’ she would just try to smile and be nice enjoying the respect she gained from helping others to buoy her up against the angry tide of abuse. It was tough on her and she had to fight harder for her dream, which she eventually did achieve. On January 9th 2014, Michelle had a sex change, and finally became who she had wanted to be her whole life. “The second I had everything done, and finally looked at my body as a woman, it didn’t phase me one bit. Even though I’m the same person, seeing myself as a woman marked the end of one life and the beginning of a new journey. It just seems right, and when I go on holiday shortly, I can wear a bikini, and it’s just going to be such a relief.” Michelle is now looking forward to the next challenges in her life, and describes how she couldn’t have done any of this without the support of her family and cannot reiterate enough, her gratitude to her real and true FRIENDS. “To everyone who has helped, I couldn’t be more grateful. For the things they did for me, even if it was just something small, it all meant so much.” Michelle says that anyone who needs to contact her can do so through the salon, Tuesday to Saturday. She is also interested attending in any business networking/speed networking, City of Culture meetings and events. Contact her on 01462 375255 or visit the salon at; 231 Southcoates Lane, Hull, HU9 3AT. www.bodybeautifulhull.co.uk

Nominations now open for Youth Enterprise Awards 2014
Nominations are now open for a series of awards to recognise Hull’s enterprising schools and businesses organised by Hull City Council, in partnership with the Youth Enterprise Bank.
Award categories include ‘Most Enterprising School’, ‘Most Enterprising Teacher’ and ‘Special Enterprise Award’ including the Sheila Waudby Young Entrepreneur of Year Award, and are sponsored by local businesses and organisations from across the city. This year’s award winners will be announced in Global Entrepreneurship Week at the Guildhall in November. Stephen Logan, Assistant Headteacher at Malet Lambert School and Chair of Hulls Be Enterprising Group, won the Lee Creamer Youth Enterprise Award last year. He said:” It was a great honour last year to be announced as the recipient of the Lee Creamer Youth Enterprise Award and that my own school Malet Lambert was named as the city’s Most Enterprising Secondary School. “I am pleased that this year the awards will go ahead thanks to the support of Hull City Council and individual sponsors. There is no doubt that Hull as a city has real commitment through the Youth Enterprise Partnership to develop the enterprising skills of young people, as part of its Making Changes for Careers programme.
“With the right support and encouragement Hull’s young people are truly enterprising, and whilst not all will pursue an entrepreneurial career in the future, the majority of them will most certainly use their skills to help impact their outlook on life and in the workplace.” Photographer Tom Arran was honoured with Young Entrepreneur last year and thoroughly enjoyed the experience, he said: “For three years my photography business has had support from the Hull Youth Enterprise Partnership in the work that we are doing. “We are proud to be associated with them, especially during Global Entrepreneurship Week and Business Week. “I was really pleased to accept the title of Young Entrepreneur Year 2013 from the inspirational entrepreneur Ruth Badger and I look forward to helping identify the winner this year to represent Hull.’ Councillor Rosie Nicola, Portfolio Holder for Learning Skills and Safeguarding Children, said: “I look forward to welcoming the nominations for these awards from across the city as we look to develop Hull’s entrepreneurial culture amongst its young people. “Hull City Council in partnership with the Youth Enterprise Bank is committed to supporting its enterprising young people and we totally understand that the young people of this city are our future, and we want them to move forward in life equipped with the right skills to build successful careers.”

Keeping Business Local
Goldsmith to Websmith
Daniel Read of Straylite Design talks to HullMag about his company. Q: How long has Straylite Design been around? A: I’ve been building websites as a part time thing for about 3 years now but I created Straylite Design as a business at the beginning of 2014. Q: What got you started? A: I was tasked with commissioning a website by my former employer in 2011 so I approached a few professional web design companies and got some quotes which were a lot more than I had anticipated. I settled on a company, gave them the job and waited… and waited. About 4 months later they got back to me with a standard template, I think it was for a coffee shop, with our logo stuck on it. Q: So you did it yourself? A: Yeah, I discovered that this big, professional company, like lots of web design outfits, were actually out-sourcing the work to the far east and were basically putting your details into an existing template. That’s fine but my employer and I wanted something bespoke. I went back to my employer and explained the situation and that I could look into building it myself. Q: …and how did that go? A: I started slow and simple. The actual website has been through loads of re-inventions as I have learned and applied the principles involved but both my employer and I were very satisfied with the result. It was a true reflection of the business and was completely managed in-house by us. Q: How important do you think it is for businesses to have a website these days? A: Well, it depends on the business or organisation and what it does. I think that there is a huge misconception of websites, many clients contact me for some advice about commissioning a website and the assumption is that websites are this kind of golden goose that generates interest for a business. I have to be very careful not to mis-sell or over sell what I offer because there are plenty of unscrupulous companies who do that, take the money and run. I consider a website to be an extension of an existing advertising campaign. What people don’t realise is that a freelance web designer like me who doesn’t share the same overheads as many web design businesses can produce a professional, tailored website for about the same cost as a single local newspaper advertisement. The difference is that a local press ad lasts as
To Contact
long as a printing cycle where as a website, fully integrated and referenced on Google, Facebook, Twitter etc is persistent and reaches a much higher audience. Q: What makes Straylite Design different from other web design solutions, why should people choose you? A: All Straylite websites are designed and built in-house by me which means the customer has a definite point of contact, this also cuts the lead time drastically as I am not out-sourcing to a third party. Something I’m very aware of is that real people find it frustrating dealing with nerdy, techy types as they tend to to be awkward and poor communicators. I am a fully trained mechanical engineer, I’ve worked on a service desk, in the journalism industry and I’m an alumni of the National Association of Goldsmiths. The wide scope of my professional background leaves me fully equipped to communicate clearly with people in the real world. Finally, building a website is worth nothing without a flair for design. Have you ever noticed how lots of websites look the same? That’s because many, many web design companies exclusively use templates to build their sites. I design and build the vast majority of Straylite websites by hand, from the ground up. I do offer entry-level template websites for very small businesses or sole traders but even these templates were custom built by me. Q: Finally, do you have anything else you’d like to say to any potential clients? A: Yeah. Anyone who is considering commissioning a website should get in touch. I can give some down-to-earth advice about their requirements and what to expect from a website, completely free and without any obligation. Contact Daniel at: info@straylitedesign.co.uk

8 Foods Worth Eating Daily
It feels like everyday there’s a new report on the latest fad food we should be eating. Let’s face it, if we tried to eat all the food that magazines, talk shows, books, news programs, and “experts” tell us we need, we would be eating sun up to sun down. May sound fun in theory, but to practice it’s pretty darn hard. So what should we eat? Fruits, veggies, whole grains, protein, and if you’re looking for specifics, here’s a list of the foods we here at HullMag try to eat every day.
Berries
Why: Berries are a great source of fiber, which most Americas do not get enough of. Most berries are a good source of vitamin C and antioxidants, which protect your body against inflammation and free radical damage. How: Berries are tasty on their own, tossed in salads, in smoothies, or mixed in cereals or yogurt. If you’re feeling really daring, try this Salmon with Blueberry Balsamic Sauce!
Eggs
Why: No offense to carrots, but we should be eating eggs to protect our eyes. The lutein and zeaxanthin found in egg yolks have been shown to reduce the risk of age related macular degeneration, the leading cause of blindness in people over 50. Studies show eggs also reduce the risk of cancers, heart disease, and stroke. They’re a great source of high quality protein and, contrary to popular belief, they don’t make your cholesterol shoot through the roof. How: Traditional egg breakfasts such as scrambles and omelettes are great, but eggs can also be added to oatmeal to amp up the protein. Check out these other egg recipe remixes and our favorite ways to eat hardboiled eggs.
Nuts
Why: Nuts are the best plant based source of protein, although they do have quite a bit of calories. They’re rich in fiber, phytonutrients, antioxidants, plant sterols, and healthy fats. Studies suggest adding nuts to your diet can reduce the risk of heart disease, and nuts are a great snack to hold you over till your next meal. How: The easiest way to incorporate nuts into your day is to eat them by the handful, but they’re also a great addition
To Contact
to salads, stir frys, and yogurt. If you feel like giving your food processor a workout, try some DIY Chunky Cinnamon Raisin Nut Butter.
Sweet Potatoes
Why: Vitamins A, C, D, B vitamins, potassium, manganese, fiber, iron, antioxidants, and a low glycemic index starch, so why not eat them daily? Studies have suggested that sweet potatoes protect against arthritis, ulcers, heart disease, and emphysema. Sweet potatoes really live up to their superfood label. How: Mashed (with coconut oil and cinnamon), roasted, baked, steamed or grilled, sweet potatoes are as versatile as they are healthy. Itching to try something a little more exotic? How about some Thai Jambalaya?
Spinach
Why: Popeye was no dope. In addition to being antioxidant rich, spinach is loaded with vitamins, K, A, C, B2, B6, E, magnesium, folate, manganese, iron, calcium, potassium, protein, phosphorus, zinc, fiber, copper, selenium, niacin, and omega 3 fatty acids. Studies have shown that eating spinach can reduce the risk of cancers, heart disease, decline in brain function, and eye disease. How: Spinach isn’t just a base for salads. Sneak some spinach into breakfast scrambles, smoothies and sauces. This Garlic Spinach is the perfect quick side dish for a weekday meal.
Broccoli
Why: We know broccoli isn’t for everyone, but those who do like broccoli are a nutritional step ahead of the pack. Broccoli is high in fiber, potassium, magnesium, calcium, and vitamin C. Broccoli also contains glucoraphanin, which the body processes into the anti-cancer compound sulforaphane, and indole-3-carbinol, a powerful antioxidant compound and anti-carcinogen found to hinder the growth of breast, cervical, and prostate cancers and boosts liver function. How: Obviously smothered in melted cheese is the most yummy way to eat broccoli (no, we are not promoting this), but did you know you can eat broccoli raw, steamed, roasted, or in a stir fry? If you like spicy food give some Sriracha Broccoli a try.
please Email: ask@hullmag.co.uk or Telephone: 01964 503091 or 01482 420250
Health & Nutrition Apples
Why: There’s a reason people have been saying “an apple a day keeps the doctor away”. Apples have been shown to protect against osteoporosis, help with asthma symptoms, lower cholesterol, aid in diabetes management, and protect our brains from free radical damage. Studies also show that apples can reduce the risk of lung, breast, colon, and liver cancer. How: Apples cut up with nut butter or chopped up in yogurt or oatmeal are great snacks, but to take them into dinner try Roasted Brussels Sprouts and Apples.
Tomatoes
Why: Lycopene, lycopene, lycopene! Lycopene has been shown to flush out free radicals, fighting against cancer cells forming. Tomato has the highest concentrate of lycopene of any fruit or vegetable. Tomatoes also help keep blood sugar levels stable, lower blood pressure and cholesterol, strengthen hair, and reduce the risk of gallstones and kidney stones. How: Fresh ripe tomatoes can make a salad or a BLT, but tomatoes are also great roasted and sautéed. And now that it’s getting warmer, these Grilled Pesto Chicken and Tomato Kebabs are the perfect spring and summer main dish.

Honorable mention goes to water. Yes, we don’t eat it, but we still need lots and lots of it everyday. So pour yourself a big glass of water and get planning some healthy meals!

Summer Days Out
Northern Lights & Xmas.. MARION I am sure that everyone is enjoying our wonderful sunshine. Bookings are up for UK holidays including coach touring, self catering, hotels & holiday resorts e.g. Butlin’s is now very modern and attracting families & young adults. Even in the school holidays there are bargains to European destinations with Greek offers, as I write, starting at just over £200 per person for 7 nights. Autumn will no doubt be on us soon so this issue I wish to inspire you for the darker days we have to come. This coming winter sightings of the Northern Lights are alleged to be the best for the next decade. The lights are always present but not always visible. The highest chance of sightings are February/March but it really is the look of the draw. There are many different opportunities to take a break to search for the lights and below are a few options. Viewing from the air offers a very different perspective as you are above the arc looking down. Should the lights not come out to play the stars & planets are an exciting spectacle on there own. This is a short evening out and makes a great idea for a gift… and Christmas is coming! From Humberside airport this operates on Friday 20 February £199.95. (approximately 7 hours your evening includes pre flight talk with your astronomers before your flight). If you have time to spare a cruise might just be your preferred option . Dark night skies away from the lights on land can give you a great opportunity to see this spectacle. This option also gives you time to visit Norwegian towns in different season with no leaves on the trees, frozen waterfalls, white crisp snow and short days. You can cruise directly from the UK, or how about flying out to Norway and experiencing Hurtigruten on their working ships, plying the Norwegian Coast Line and popping into many unknown ports of call. If you haven’t quite the time for a cruise how about 3 nights in Lapland flying from Humberside airport on 19 February, from £859 pp. Lapland nicely leads me on to Christmas. How about a visit to Santa for the day on Sunday 14 December, Adults £489 & Children £469, or free if you are quick to book! This includes lots of activities & meals. For the grown ups there are Christmas Markets throughout the UK & Europe. In the UK I have to say a favourite of mine is Edinburgh which offers a blend of Scotland, Germany & Belgium, creating a wonderful atmosphere. Chatsworth hold a good market with over 300 stalls of crafts & produce each November. The house takes on a different theme each year and 2014 is “Alice’s Wonderland”. This is always a popular day out. Continental markets via Hull on the overnight sailing gives you many options for a weekend break. For instance Cologne has no less than 7 markets in its city. For the locals it is a real social occasion, creating a special atmosphere enjoying drinking and wonderful food, hot smoked salmon, Bratwurst, Gluhwein & hot chocolate, the list goes on… as well as the opportunity to buy unusual gifts for Christmas. Remember for all your travel arrangements, give my team a call. We are experienced in all corners of the world and our enjoyment is to fulfill your travelling desires & aspirations. We look forward to hearing from you. Marion To Contact

PAPERBACK WRITER
New Beatles book with the Hull connection. Back in 1963 Lynda Hill personally met the Beatles in Hull. The experience and memories of that meeting have not faded and have lived with this life long fan for over fifty years. Now Lynda has put her story and that of other Beatles fans, with a Hull connection, down in her first book which is due for release in the Autumn. In her own words Lynda tells HullMag her story of how the publishing of the book has come about. On November 24th 1963, The Beatles appeared at The ABC Cinema, Hull. It was their third show in the city, and Beatlemania had arrived. They had previously played at The Majestic Ballroom, in October 1962 and February 1963 and also came back to The ABC in October 1964.
“an important part of the music scene in Hull”
I set about tracing people in Hull, I interviewed them and then wrote their stories. In January Dean was extremely busy with his other projects, and as he lives in the North West I asked if he would let me take over the book and continue with it alone here in Hull. He agreed, and I have been busy writing the wonderful recollections ever since. I have met so many lovely people who are now friends, I have loved listening to them recounting their memories, and now All You Need Is Hull-The Beatles and Me is finished, one thing is certain, The Beatles visits to Hull are now captured in print with the fans stories, and can be seen as an important part of the music scene in Hull in The 60s.
The first show attracted approximately 38 people, me being one of them, the poor attendance was thought to be because The Beatles were, at this time unknown, and also it was Hull Fair Week. The second show was a sellout, and by October of 1963 the only way to be sure of a ticket for the November concert, was to queue all night outside The ABC, thousands did and once again I was there. When the booking office opened, the next morning, my Beatles’ Story began, and the week after the concert the Hull and Yorkshire Times carried the story on the front page ‘Dream Came True as Lynda Met The Beatles’ Over the years my story was hidden away, then on the 25th Anniversary of the concert in 1963 I was contacted by a local newspaper to recount my tale. In 1988 I was asked to tell it again at The Hull Truck (Spring Street) Theatre in Hull, there was an exhibition of Beatles memorabilia and the premiere of a play called A Hard Day’s Night. From 2009 to 2013 I told it on several occasions on Radio Humberside and also BBC Look North.
To Contact
In August 2013, I heard a man called Dean Johnson from Liverpool, being interviewed on the radio, he was asking for anyone who had a Beatles’ story to tell to contact him. I did, and after hearing it he said he would like to include it in a new chapter of his book, The Beatles and Me. It is a compilation of stories from people who met or saw The Beatles’ live.’ I told him there were more stories in Hull and he suggested that we collaborate on a whole new book and call it All You Need Is Hull.
There is to be a book launch in August at the St Stephens shopping centre in Hull. This is special to me, St. Stephens is built on the site of The ABC Cinema where I met The Beatles in 1963. The book will be available to buy at the launch, and after from me by post or I will deliver locally. Words: Lynda Hill, Author and Beatles Fan. If you wish to pre-order please call: 07788 999 478 All You Need is Hull - The Beatles and Me will also be available from Waterstones, Jameson Street, Hull. Telephone: 01482 580234

East Stand Views...
Twelve months ago you would have as much chance of selecting the winning lottery numbers as predicting our opponents for the first competitive fixture of the 2014/15 season. We have kicked off against Slovakian side AS Trencin (0-0) in our first ever European game with the KC stadium hosting the second leg on August 7th. We are seeded and expected to win, and should finish them off at home. The same professionalism shown during The FA Cup run is required but perhaps we should practice our penalty taking a little more!!! All being well by the next column we are through the next stage. This would then mean a dozen Thursday evening fixtures till the new year and potential fixtures against obscure names from Russia or famous names such as Seville, Saint Etienne, PSV Eindhoven, Rapid Vienna or Inter Milan. The club are also aiming to sign young players to boost the under 21’s development squad and bring through talent to the first team who are either locally developed or imported from Hereford or Sheffield United for instance. It is fantastic that the club have finally decided to do something constructive about developing youngsters and developing an Academy set-up at Bishop Burton College. There has been a massive failing with young talent since the 1980’s and very few have developed or
played more than a handful of games for the club. The club has reached the Premier League yet youngsters still compete against Scunthorpe or Rotherham whilst other local teenagers are attracted by the opportunities offered elsewhere such as Leeds, Sheffield or Doncaster. We may be the
top dogs in Yorkshire at the moment but in terms of youth development a long way beneath Yorkshire rivals let alone Premier League rivals. The appointment of the former Swansea City Academy Manager can only help but the whole strategy depends on local players making a breakthrough to the first team. After so many promotion campaigns and relegation struggles over the past decade few players gained an extended run and no doubt some potential stars such as Reading’s Harry Cardwell took this into consideration when he moved away from our junior ranks last year. Hull City are spending a vast amount of money during the summer, maybe £30 million on players as well as the new pitch, training ground improvements
S-T-R-E-T-C-H-Mark’s
and the Academy. Maybe they are aiming for a top ten position and cup runs to finance this investment. They are showing ambition but there seems to be a lack of money coming into the club besides Sky money and the Allam commitment. The Sky money may just be spent on wages if all recent signings are on equivalent rates to Long and Jelavic. Worryingly Curtis Davies is angling for a wage rise in line with the others so we hope that last years team harmony will be retained now that there could be differing levels of wages within the team. Things are going well and we are building for sustained Premier League football. Maybe the only way the Allam’s could get their investment back will be be the sale of a successful club. No-one locally could repay their investment but maybe Asian or American investment may be attracted if we continue to challenge in cups and European football? Unfortunately the name change issues may have lost some passholders during the Summer but then again moving people to the north stand or raising prices by 30% will have similar impact on pass sales. As they say it’s never dull in Hull and hand in hand with the rise of Steve Bruce’s team are the off field issues. Let’s hope for positivity in 2014/15 from both the owners and fans and the only contentious issues this season include who should play on our left wing? Snodgrass (pictured), Ince, Aluko or Brady (what a choice!?). It would be nice to just concentrate on football again. On paper this is the greatest team Hull City have ever had in 110 years but you would think David Lloyd and Mark Hateley are in charge again by the disillusionment of some fans.
Words by Woody Mellor
In the ideal world I would be able to go off on a tangent and discuss England’s great performances in the World Cup, but as they lasted as long as I expected, it’s back to Hull City who begin their next season in the Premiership.

FIONA’S FOOD FOR THOUGHT By Fiona Dwyer, broadcast journalist, PR & media consultant, slave to 2 children and a husband.
SUMMER FUN – OR CHILDCARE NIGHTMARE?
The 6 week summer holidays are a double-edged sword, aren’t they? It’s great not to have to do the school run every day – but there’s also the not-so-small matter of sorting out childcare so you can carry on working. If you haven’t already got a plan, don’t worry, just do one right now! Check out holidays clubs, although it can be expensive to rely on them for the whole time. See if you can “swap” children with your friends. If you’re lucky enough to have family living nearby, see if they can help out for a few days. And try not to feel guilty because you’re not spending as much time as you’d like with your children. Most of us try to take at least 2 weeks off. Just make sure that when you do, you’re not constantly checking your smartphone for emails that you feel you simply have to reply to. If you remember 2 things during your 2 weeks, remember these:
YOU’RE ON HOLIDAY!!!
Children grow up so quickly, take the time now and cherish the memories!
EXERCISE – IT’S GOT TO BE DONE!
No excuses this time. We’ve all got to exercise. Don’t just belong to a gym and never go. Don’t just have good intentions, actually do something. Go for a walk, a jog, a swim, a bike ride. Anything at all that gets your heart rate going. I’m as bad as anyone and my goal is to use the summer months to break my current cycle (no pun intended!). It’s been proven time and time again that exercise is a cure or prevention for many things. According to NHS figures, it reduces the risk of major illnesses, like heart disease, stroke, diabetes and cancer by up to 50%. It lowers the risk of an early death by up to 30%. And it increases self-esteem, energy, the quality of your sleep, helps stress and reduces the risk of depression, dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. Surely these are all things we want? I know I do.
MYTHICAL READING CHALLENGE
Every summer our libraries put on a themed summer reading challenge for children. This year it’s “Mythical Maze”. All the children have to do is read one book of their choosing each week for the 6 weeks break. My children love it and it’s a really good activity to take them through the holidays. They even get posters, stickers and other free stuff from the library. And there’s an added benefit for my son this year - it will double up for his summer holiday homework! He has to read one book every week and write a review of his favourite one ready to hand in at the start of the new term in September! Don’t you just love it when a plan comes together?!!!
