Welcome & Contents
Hello Readers,
Welcome to the February edition of HULLMAG. I hope that you are all finding the time to enjoy some of the many exciting events and happenings in Hull under the City of Culture umbrella. We have some great competitions in this edition, the first is for a pair of tickets for the Sheffield Arena to see Premier League Darts which will certainly score a bullseye for the lucky winner. We are also giving away a family ticket to visit York’s Chocolate Story which is one of the best places I have been in recent months; and the grandchildren were totally amazed too, and not just with the thought of indulging in some of the chocolate.
4 WIN Premier Darts Tickets
If music is your thing we have a bumper selection of great gigs that you can win a pair of tickets to see the likes of: Wilko Johnson, Holy Holy, The Angelic Upstarts, New Model Army, The Dan Reed Network and many more. Marion Owen takes a look at New York, Austrailia and India on the travel page, and we take a look at having a family day out in York. If you have and have taken any photographs or have any stories about your experiences please share them on the HullMag facebook page - we would love to see and hear all about this great event and what it means to you. This month we also have some great articles and features on Health & Wellbeing, Mens Health, Local Sport including the Hull City column. We also take a look at property, gardening and introduce you to Michael Wood the Town Crier who starts his Oyez, Oyez column in this edition. We have our regular ramblings from Fiona Dwyer and Rachael returns with some great advice in her Courage Queen agony aunt column.

House prices fall as market cools in ‘correction’ House prices fell in value by 0.9pc last month as the market market started to cool, according to Halifax. This monthly fall in prices follows four consecutive months of growth, with December’s monthly rate of growth at 1.6pc. The rate of growth in the 12 months to January was 5.7pc, down from 6.5pc the annual growth rate recorded the previous month. Howard Archer, of IHS Global Insight, described the fall as a “correction”, and said that house prices will rise by no more than 3pc this year. He added: “Weakening consumer fundamentals, likely mounting caution over making major spending decisions, and elevated house price to earnings ratios are likely to weigh down on house prices. However, a shortage of supply is likely to put a hard floor under prices.” Halifax’s house price index is more volatile than Nationwide’s, which last week reported house prices rose by 0.2pc on a monthly basis in January. But both indices signal that house prices have slowed in the start of this year. Martin Ellis, Halifax housing economist, said that the annual rate of growth remained “robust” due to an “ongoing shortage of property for sale, low levels of housebuilding, and exceptionally low interest rates”. He added: “These factors are unlikely to change materially during 2017.”

Meanwhile, house builder Bellway is ploughing more investment into land, rising 21pc from a year earlier to £380m. It reported that it completed 6.5pc more homes in the six months to the end of January compared to the same period last year. It also increased its forward order book by 9pc to £1.1bn, boosted by the Government’s Help to Buy scheme, which helps first-time buyers with a 5pc deposit to purchase newly built homes. Ted Ayres, the chief executive, said: “Market conditions remain positive and accordingly Bellway is continuing to invest in a controlled manner, both in land and work in progress”.

Local News
Entrepreneurship is thriving Entrepreneurship is not the exclusive domain of the experienced businessperson and in our area there are plenty of bright young things looking to create solid and sustainable business futures. And when we say young we mean it, teenagers with their sights set on commercial success. So how do young people access the business support, mentoring and funding they need to get their businesses ideas moving forward? The good news for 13 to 21 year olds based in Hull and East Riding is that it’s a great deal easier than in many other parts of the country, thanks to the work of the John Cracknell Youth Enterprise Bank (JCYEB). JCYEB is a voluntary, non-profit organisation that exists solely to help young people realise their entrepreneurial potential, either through marketing an innovative product or service, or by offering help and assistance to the benefit of their local community. As well as providing funding, the ‘bank’ supports young people as they convert their ideas into actions and it is this aspect that’s pivotal to the success of the scheme. This ambitious outlook has paid off having to date supported more than 350 local young people in their enterprises. The JCYEB awards grants of up to £1,000, backed up with practical guidance and, crucially, access to business mentoring support. It counts on the support of Hull City Council and numerous local business organisations of all sizes for funding, mentoring, business advice and encouragement.
Case study: @TArranphoto - www.tarranphoto.com Thomas Arran (23) is both the creative and entrepreneurial force behind TArran Photo. He is also the co-owner of ‘My Fun Booth’ and Co-Chair of ‘Let’s Talk Business’. He has completed photography projects with high profile clients such as Hull FC. “My enterprising journey began whilst studying for a BTEC Diploma in Photography. My first projects were small weddings and eventually led to work with Hull FC and Hull City Council. Following further enquiries, it soon became apparent that I could take my passion of photography and run it as a business. I received support from the Net 315 Enterprise Gateway, the HYEP and the JCTEBprise Bank, where I received £800 to cover my start-up costs. I have now set up a second business ‘My Fun Booth’, which offers a customisable photo booth service at weddings, corporate events and marketing campaigns.”
Photograph by Thomas Arran for Hull College Group
Tom is now himself a supporter and Bondholder of JCYEB and encourages other young people to follow their own path into business.
Got a great business idea or a business you know you can take further? Here’s everything you need to take your next step forward: 1. Visit the website www.youthenterprise.co.uk for information. 2. Download, complete and submit the application form. Two simple steps which fits with the John Cracknell Youth Enterprise Bank primary aim, to make it easy for qualifying applicants to get the help and support they need. The website gives loads of examples of businesses who have been helped, access to the Hull Start-up kit resource, the JCYEB application form and all the guidance notes on how to complete the form including what the awarding committee will be looking for with your application and even the opportunity to discuss your idea of business with an expert business adviser before you make a formal app to the bank. The last word goes to Millie Notarantonio, a young entrepreneur who’s not only been there and is doing that, but is also printing the t-shirts! “If you have an idea, don’t be afraid to try it no matter how young you are. If you’re aged 21 and under apply to the John Cracknell Youth Enterprise Bank, they will help you every step of the way.” Full information on all aspects of the work of the John Cracknell Youth Enterprise Bank can be found at www.youthenterprise.co.uk Find out more about the Bondholder Investor Support Scheme on their website at: www.jcyeb-bondholders.co.uk

Oyez, Oyez: The Town Crier Column
A SALUTE TO ACHIEVEMENT Readers may be interested to know that as a town crier I don’t work from home (much to the relief of my neighbours). When out and about and working in Hull, I have always considered Victoria Square to be my urban office. As such, I was delighted to see it has had a refurbishment – and at no expense to me. I have to say the outcome has provided the city a fabulous space for relaxing or enjoying performances of varying forms of entertainment. Free of those pesky orange barriers, life can go on as normal in what is Hull’s busiest pedestrian crossroads. The square is especially busy at the winter and summer University of Hull, Conferment of Degree Congregations. This sees the City Hall full to the rafters of graduates, academic staff, VIP guests and family and friends to witness an important and colourful civic occasion. My involvement is to orchestrate the traditional hat-throwing ceremony on the steps of the Queen Victoria statue on completion of the formal proceedings in the City Hall, when degrees are conferred by the University Chancellor, The Rt Hon Baroness Bottomley of Nettlestone. A wind of change has blown through hull, bringing with it an air of ambition and confidence. Harnessing the energy of this confidence are the wunderkinds of wind turbines, Siemens, who have contributed to Hull earning its wings and taking-off as a high-flying city. Further contributing to the city is the installation of a 25-tonne, 75-metre-long Siemens turbine blade that has stirred a debate about its merits as a work of art. And in creating a debate it is doing its job in that Hull is certainly being talked about. For Hull’s year as UK City of Culture and the Made In Hull aspect of its
annual programme, I was thrilled that we would be in the company of the Blade art installation. I deliberately added some words into my speech about it, alongside giving my usual welcome words of Hull wisdom to graduates before asking for three cheers and conducting the climax of the hat throw. With all that’s currently happening in Hull, what a gift of a time for photographers. The panoramic image of the hat throw featured here by Rob Deyes, had him use a lightweight Full Frame Mirrorless Digital Camera. Due to the Blade’s length and close proximity to buildings, precariously perched on a stepladder on the City Hall balcony, Rob used a technique called ‘panoramic stitch’, which involves taking a number of pictures and stitching them together to create one image. The result, as seen, is quite stunning. Victoria Square will no doubt be host to many more memorable events. Up until the Blade is removed, when folks stop to take a look or pass it by, how about we start our own tradition of giving it a salute in the same way that I believe it salutes Kingston upon Hull.
Michael Wood, Town Crier

Men In Sheds Hull ‘Men in Sheds’ started in Australia when elderly men came together around practical tasks carried out in sheds or workshops. Many of those taking part are retired, as people often lose some sense of purpose and become isolated from their community, particularly if they do not play sport or go to the pub to meet friends. The key social benefits of the ‘Men in Sheds, Hull’ project include: l Providing a number of community hubs (sheds) where elderly men can meet on a regular basis. l Reducing feelings of loneliness and isolation that members may have. l Improving the quality of life for its members. l Enabling elderly local men to remain active and participate in a community initiative. l Make members of a ‘shed’ feel valued as individuals. l Allowing members with common interests to meet regularly to socialise, make friends, exchange ideas and help each other. l Giving members the help to pursue a hobby or pastime. l Providing local men with the opportunity to pass on skills and to maintain their own. l Supporting the community as a whole, by service or deed. l Enabling members to interact with wider parts of our community, via skills and knowledge exchange with young people in Hull. A ‘shed’ gives lonely and isolated local men a sense of ownership: Members are encouraged to become involved in the continued planning and development of the project. In many cases Men in Sheds Hull will give members a reason to get out of bed in a morning, to go beyond the transition of bedroom to living room each day, and the long periods of isolation they may encounter between family visits.
friends in a shed and members can direct access for support services l The group can reach men that can be classed as missing from social circles but also those men that may not be otherwise accessing health messages l Informally get men talking about their health, concerns and fears in an environment they feel safe in In fulfilling the purpose of the group, we believe that the member’s feeling of “usefulness in the community” will increase; there will be an improvement in their wellbeing and self-worth. The group includes initiatives to use the developed skills to help the more vulnerable in society with projects such as gardening, garage/shed and home security, minor repair work, etc and thus result in making the community a better and safer place to live. Men in Sheds, Hull - ‘The shed’ is located at: The Pavilion, Road Playing Fields, Beverley Road Hull and is open Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday between 10am and 4pm where the door is always open and the kettle is on!!
The key health benefits of the ‘Men in Sheds Hull’ project include:
Current activities include board games, chess, computing, cookery, gardening, joinery, metal work, model making, photography and of course trips and visits. The activities are developing and increasing as ‘the shed’ is very much led by the members. In addition to participating in practical projects, there is always the opportunity to socialise and chat with like minded people.
l Reducing social isolation amongst elderly local men.
Most recently the BBC visited ‘the shed’ to film a documentary to be called “Holding Back the Years”.
l Improving mental health, health behaviour and physical health.
Maureen Lipman, the presenter, was wonderful and engaged with all the members. We are all looking forward to it being shown in March.
l Access to men’s health and the delivery of vital messages for the group. l Counselling, many issues can be born out of a conversation

Agony Aunt
Dear Courage Queen Dear Rachael, I have a job which I love with people I enjoy working with. I just have one problem: my boss. One minute she is ‘lovely’ and is really chatty. The next minute she ignores me and can be quite rude. She leaves me to get on with my job most of the time but then when I don’t do it the ways she likes it, she will become really aggressive and critical. My colleagues say she is making cruel remarks, which get quite personal, such as “Well your problem is you never listen”. Am I being over sensitive? I have started to dread it when she is in the office. We all seem to walk on eggshells around her. Yours tearfully
Rachael Replies
Workplace Table Tennis Cup Returns Workplaces are invited to take part in the fifth annual workplace table tennis tournament. Due to its previous popularity the tournament is back again this year, aimed at offering workplaces and individuals the chance to come together and compete in an evening of competitive sport. The tournament will take place at the Rea Balmford Table Tennis Centre within the YPI Centre on Chanterlands Avenue on Friday 10 March at 6pm (registration opens at 5.45pm), with trophies presented at the end of the night.
Dear Courageous one Whenever someone says to me they feel like they are ‘walking on eggshells’ then I suspect a case of emotional manipulation. This is when another person exerts their power to change your mental and emotionally state, in this example negatively. Some people in positions of power can abuse their position. They rely on fear to make a person behave in the way they want them to. It is a form of power and control, which can be rooted in the person feeling insecure about themselves and their abilities. If this is not nipped in the bud then it may progress and get worse. It is important to build your own sense of self-respect and believe that no one ha a right to make personal attacks on you and your abilities. Remember, a good leader empowers their staff, not makes them fearful.
Ahead of this there will be two free taster sessions, on Thursday 2 and 9 March, 6 to 7pm, for people who want to develop the basic skills of table tennis, in the run up to the tournament.
Here are some steps to take. 1) Keep a diary of what happens and how you feel. It is important to have a record of specific examples so you can express how you feel at the right time.
Pauline Beach, Senior Sports Development Officer said: “We are pleased to be working with our colleagues within the Hull and District Table Tennis Association to deliver this great competition which offers local workforces the opportunity to get involved in a fun, relaxed evening of sports competition.
2) Think about how you would like the relationship to be. Is there any way in which you can change the dynamics? Often letting someone know how you feel helps the other person to reflect on his or her behaviour.
“The great thing about table tennis is you don’t have to be an expert to get involved – it is fun for all ages and abilities.” Players must be 18 years old and there is a cost of £12 per team of 2 players, which includes a buffet.
3) Think about having an honest conversation with the positive intent of resolving the challenges that will help the situation improve.
For more information or to book, email brenda@hulltabletennis.co.uk or call 07785 924 134. For details about all Active Hull activities visit www.activehull.co.uk or follow @activehull on Twitter.
4) If you feel you cannot approach the person, as you are afraid, then this is a good example of where you need to believe that you have a right to be treat with respect by anyone regardless of his or her position. Read ‘Feel the Fear & Do It Anyway® by Dr Susan Jeffers. 5) This situation is about you finding the courage to take responsibility to resolve it, otherwise it will probably continue. Take little steps to become more assertive. Remember you have a right to express how you feel. Google ‘Assertiveness’ and read ‘The Personal Bill of Rights’ which you will find on the Internet. Learning to manage relationships in the workplace is a skill in itself. Daily I work with people giving them practical ways to reduce the stressors in their life. A fresh unbiased perspective is always useful and I give practical ways to resolve challenging situations. If you still feel you would like a fresh unbiased perspective on the situation, then email me - rach@couragequeen.com.

Gardening
Monthly Gardening Advice There’s always something to be doing in the garden, whether it’s pruning, tidying or sowing, so we’ve put together our top gardening tasks for February. Top 10 jobs this month l l l l l l l l l l
Prepare vegetable seed beds, and sow some vegetables under cover Chit potato tubers Protect blossom on apricots, nectarines and peaches Net fruit and vegetable crops to keep the birds off Prune winter-flowering shrubs that have finished flowering Divide bulbs such as snowdrops, and plant those that need planting ‘in the green’ Prune Wisteria Prune hardy evergreen hedges and renovate overgrown deciduous hedges Prune conservatory climbers such as bougainvillea Cut back deciduous grasses left uncut over the winter, remove dead grass from evergreen grasses
General maintenance
Check tree ties and stakes. Replace, tighten or slacken them where necessary. Tie up splayed out branches on conifers that have become damaged by the weight of snow or by strong winds. Firm back newly planted trees and shrubs if they have been lifted by frost heave or by strong winds. Remove weeds from around the bases of young trees. Check protective coverings on newly planted or borderline hardy trees, shrubs and climbers, to ensure they remain secure until the risk of frost has passed. If the weather is warm, you may need to start mow. Set the cutting height at its maximum, and only mow when the grass is dry. Re-cut lawn edges to crisp up the appearance of the
garden and save work later in the season. Turf can be laid, provided the soil is not too wet or frosty. Work from planks, to avoid compacting the soil. Do not walk on the newly laid turf and leave undisturbed for several weeks to allow new roots to establish. Prepare seed beds for new lawns to be seeded later in the spring, but only attempt this if the ground is not too wet. Dahlia tubers stored over winter (or bought this year) can be started into growth. Place them in a light, warm place to sprout before planting. They will need additional misting with a spray-bottle of water, to stop them drying out. Dahlia ‘Karma Chocolate’. Lily bulbs can be planted in pots, for flowers this

Gardening summer. After growing on indoors or in a cool greenhouse, they can be moved onto the patio when in flower, so that you can enjoy the blooms. Bulbs coming up in the rock garden or in containers may benefit from overhead protection from the rain and snow. A sheet of glass or Perspex placed on piles of bricks will do the job. Hardy annuals can be sown in pots or modules to provide colour. Summer-flowering Dutch iris bulbs can be forced and used as cut flowers. Place gladiolus corms in seed trays or boxes and place in a light, warm (around 10ºC/50ºF) spot to encourage them to sprout before planting. This will ensure an earlier display.
Sweet peas can be sown under cloches, in a cold frame, or in a cool room in the house. Any sweet peas that were sown earlier in the autumn can now be potted. Root cuttings can be taken of Papaver (perennial poppies), Verbascum (mullein), Acanthus (bear’s britches) and Phlox. Check on tender plants overwintering outdoors to ensure protective coverings are still in place

Spicy food could be the secret to a healthy heart and a longer life, says new study If you’re a fan of spicy food you’re in a luck, as a new study has suggested that eating chilli peppers could be the secret to a longer life. Researchers from the University of Vermont analysed over 16,000 American men who had completed the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey between 1988 and 1994. They found that over a period of 19 years roughly 34 per cent of the men died, but when data was limited to just those who consumed chilli peppers this number dropped to just 22 per cent. The results, published in the journal Plos One, suggested that the 13 per cent lower risk of death could have something to do with a the ‘capsaicin’ found in the peppers. Capsaicin is commonly used in treating arthritis and works as an effective painkiller. Co-author of the study, Dr. Benjamin Litternberg explained that capsaicin component of the chillies seemed to reduce the amount of inflammation in the body: “The types of deaths that were lowest in the pepper group were deaths due to vascular disease, heart attacks and stroke.” Litternberg said his teams findings support the results of a similar 2015 study linking spicy food intake to a reduced risk of death by showing “a significant decrease in mortality associated with hot red chilli pepper consumption.” The study of nearly 500,000 Chinese people over seven years found that those who ate spicy food three times a week cut their risk of dying by 14 per cent compared with people who didn’t. However Litternberg added that correlation does not necessarily prove causation and further studies would be needed to come to a concrete conclusion on whether eat hot peppers could truly benefit your health: “There’s a whole bunch of better, stronger, more convincing ways to improve your health than to go on a chilli pepper diet.”
FAT CHANCE Did you see that latest report about how, thanks to the free availability of medical statistics, we’re all eating more sensibly and living more healthily, losing weight and getting fitter? No, because, let’s face it, it isn’t going to happen. We did, however, all hear yet another soul-crushing expose, this time from the Health and Social Care Information Centre namely, that Britain is still the ‘fat man’ (sic) of Europe, with obesity rates (and associated health problems) continuing to rise. Nearly 12,000 people were admitted to hospital in 2011 for obesityrelated illness - it would have been more, apparently, if only there’d been wider doors. It’s not funny, of course, especially when we learn that one in 10 children starting primary school are already obese, rising to one in five when they move up to secondary level. Clearly we’re feeding ourselves and our kids too much of the wrong stuff. And, of course, we knew that, didn’t we? After all, Jamie’s been saying it for years now. What’s even more illogical is that it comes on the heels of another report, bizarrely from the Institute of Mechanical Engineers, showing that the average UK family chucks away some £680 worth of food a year uneaten, meaning that we’re spending way too much on rubbish food and that the supermarket cash registers are as bulging as our waistlines as a consequence. Since we all seem determined to eat our way out of recession and through Brexit, government appeals for national belt-tightening would seem to be a little misguided!

Why York is the perfect city for a family day out York offers a big slice of the national curriculum, all in one place, with evidence of Romans, Normans and Tudors. Then there’s the ghosts, Harry Potter association and chocolate. And you don’t have to spend a fortune: the best attractions - walking the city walls and cobbled streets - are free. What to see The City Walls
The easiest way to see York in one go is to walk around the medieval walls. There are around two miles still intact, but if you’re pushed for time, one of the best stretches is to jump on at Mickelgate and head north-east for views of the Minster. The steps to get up here are wide enough to take a pushchair.
The Shambles
The inspiration for Harry Potter’s Diagon Alley, this medieval thoroughfare was once lined with butchers, and blood was said to run down the cobbles. Today you’ll find cafes and shops. The Shambles is rumoured to be the most photographed street in England”
York’s Chocolate Story
This entertaining museum tells the story of our love affair with chocolate, including its popularity with the Quaker families of York - such as Rowntree and Terry - that went on to become confectioners. Did you know that Terry’s Chocolate Orange was originally an apple?
Jorvik Viking Centre
”Head to York with your children to discover why the Vikings have been rehabilitated into heroes for the new generation” Head to York with your children to discover why the Vikings have been rehabilitated into heroes for the new generation Vikings are heroes for the new generation - thanks, in part, to How to Train Your Dragon and the Scandi clothing invasion. Jorvik will help your children brush up on actual facts about these Nordic seafarers. With the main centre due to re-open on April 8, visit the excellent display at St Mary’s Church, where you’ll come face to skull with what was an important and thriving 9th-century Viking city.
York Minster
The largest Gothic cathedral in northern Europe is an impressive sight for adults, but you can keep children engaged by downloading a treasure map from the website (yorkminster. org) and testing the 1280 Chapter House whispering gallery.
Other great attractions well worth a visit whilst in York include: l The National Railway Museum l York Art Gallery l The Yorkshire Museum l The Museum Gardens & St. Mary’s Abbey l The Original Ghost Walk of York l Betty’s Tea Rooms l A River Trip on The River Ouse l Cliffords Tower l The Castle Museum
WIN A FAMILY TICKET TO: To enter the draw just send your name address and telephone number on a postcard to: York’s Chocolate Story Draw, 31 Elm Drive, Cherry Burton, HU17 7RJ The closing date for entries is 11th March 2017

Hot news ...
New York has to be the top spot for new bookings for this year. We are doing at least one booking a day at the moment ,mainly for travelling at the end of the year, when the city is decorated for Christmas. There is a great selection of central hotels around Times Square and Grand Central Station just as well priced as those further out. Don’t delay start booking today. If you have seen New York and are looking for another city break across the pond don’t dismiss Boston or Philadelphia, both offer lower taxes on shopping. Chicago, Toronto or Montreal are all east coast & exciting places to visit too. All of these destinations are reachable from Humberside over Amsterdam and most have a direct service from Manchester. Australian Islands… did you see Martin Clunes travelling around? I was really taken with Norfolk Island, 900 miles off Australia’s coast, my thoughts were I would love to visit but the chances are slim! Well I popped it on my BOOK IT LIST and yes it has come up trumps and I am going. I could not believe my luck when I saw a cruise to the South Sea Islands sailing in November 2018, ticking off so many new destinations for me. If you would like to join me on this special or have more information please do not hesitate to contact me. Iceland… with many organised tours for this spring being full don’t despair if you are wanting to make a last minute booking. We can tailor make you a financially secure visit to including the Geysers, Waterfalls, Blue Lagoon and a tour to search for the Northern Lights on a date to suit you. The super thing in Iceland is that if the evening tour to the Northern Lights does not operate due to cloudy skies they simply book you for the next night in the hopes that you do get to see them before your return! Iceland is an amazing place for a break with or without the Northern Lights. Tailor Made Travel - you are probably thinking of Australia, New Zealand, North America and the Far East which are regularly sought after. Does India, Bhutan, Nepal and other area’s of South Asia spring to mind? If not and you do enjoy doing your own thing we can organise private tours & can offer amazing and very different itineraries to these areas that you may not have considered or think a possibility. Another new winner?
The Humber Premier League saw another new winner last season with the emergence of Wawne United, who surprised the whole of the region with their impressive goalscoring, giving them a 5 point winning margin and a whopping 101 goal tally for the season. The 2016/17 seasons sees another potential new winner in Crown FC, who have been constantly of the edge of glory over the past few seasons. Just a point behind the leaders Sculcoates Amateurs, Mark Lever’s squad know they have a real challenge to keep the top spot in the final stages of the season.
Crown face the bottom 3 in the coming weeks, so they have an opportunity to ensure they enter April in pole position, but as we know in the HPL, nothing is for certain. Hanson Jewellers have had an impressive run, losing only 1 of their last 7, which included a credible draw against NCEL Division 1 high fliers Hall Road Rangers in the East Riding Senior Cup. The future of Crown FC is in their own hands, and I’m sure they’ll be doing all they can to ensure it’s another new name on the Humber Premier League Trophy come May. If you want to watch any of the games from the HPL Premier or Division 1, you can see the all of the fixtures at http://smo.news/scores/

The smart way to lose fat with your food Nutritional advice on how to shrink your belly
Here’s the reality: it doesn’t matter how hard you train in the gym if you don’t put the same time, effort and focus into what you do in the kitchen. The old saying that “you can’t out-train a bad diet” is something of a cliché, but like all clichés it’s rooted in truth. And if you want to make big changes to how you look with your shirt off – and as quickly as possible – then you need to start thinking more about mealtimes. Here’s our expert advice on how you can start to eat smarter and torch body fat faster.
help shrink your belly fast. A lunch like this will provide musclebuilding protein, more stomach-filling fibre to ward off cravings, and an abundance of vitamins and minerals to keep your fat-torching mission on track.
High protein evening meals
Your final meal of the day needs to be high in protein, especially if you’ve just worked out to help the repair of your damaged muscles. Baked salmon, grilled steak or chicken breasts on top of a pile of grilled or roasted veg will provide all your body needs. Add avocado or home-made hummus for some healthy fats to allow your body to better absorb certain vitamins.
Be smart with your carbs
To lose belly fat quickly you need to be smart with your carbs. A small amount of certain carbs, like sweet potato or wholegrain rice, with dinner after training can aid recovery and help you get to sleep quicker. But the sugars and processed carbs found in chocolate, cakes, biscuits and sodas should be avoided if you want to burn fat and not gain it.
Hydration is very important
Being hydrated is crucial to getting lean quickly because if your body is struggling with the mental and physical problems of dehydration, it doesn’t have the resources or inclination to burn fat. Aim to drink at least three litres of water a day - carry a big bottle with you and sip frequently - and drink more on training days to ensure you stay hydrated.
The importance of breakfasts
When following this training plan breakfast is the most important meal of your day because what you eat first thing helps dictate better eating habits until bedtime. A breakfast made from lean protein, healthy fats and fibre - think eggs, bacon, and yes, some green vegetables - provides a sustained release of energy, so hunger won’t hit before lunch.
Learn about lunch
Swapping a pre-packed sandwich and crisps for a big bowl of green leaves, mixed veg and chicken, tuna or another quality protein will
Pick the right snacks
To burn fat you need to be in a calorie deficit (expending more than you take in) so inevitably you will feel hungry at times. Nutrientdense snacks - nuts, natural yogurt, beef jerky - will fill you up and top up your intake of protein, healthy fats, vitamins and minerals. Avoid high-sugar nutrientlight snacks, and watch your belly melt away.

Marco Silva: City’s Six Month Saviour In the last column Hull City were set to appoint an unknown Portuguese manager called Marco Silva to replace Mike Phelan. Little was known of him besides a history of success in Greece and Portugal but one month on we can happily say that Marco is the man. Four consecutive home victories including Manchester United in the League Cup semi- final and Liverpool in the league, seven points out of twelve, seven new signings and great optimism within City fans.
So will City survive? There is a long way to go but from a position at the foot of the league and potentially falling adrift with games against four title contenders we are one point from safety and three

sides could easily be caught including Leicester City. The good news is once we have played Arsenal the only remaining title challenger to play is Manchester City and there are a number of sides coming to the KCom Stadium who City are capable of defeating such as Burnley, West Ham, Middlesborough and Sunderland. If they are capable of taking a goalless draw from Old Trafford many of the remaining away fixtures have some potential too.
“So will City survive” Hull City have 20 points and a further 18- 20 points could ensure survival. This seemed unlikely a month ago but after the recent revival this is now a possibility. The defence is far more secure, Jakupovic is excelling in goal and the midfield is both matching the
Many fans feared a transfer window clearance sale with Maguire and Robertson both linked with £10 million sales but thankfully the club resisted offers or arguably Silva put his foot down to prevent further players being sold off. One does wonder if automatically extending players contracts by email led two of them to jump ship and if players had buy out clauses associated with the new extended contracts as the clubs seemed to consider derisory offers rather than demanding high fees to put off the chasing pack. Why both players left is open to conjecture, did they fail to fit in with Silva’s plans, did they chase a big wage and long contracts or had they decide to get out of the Hull City pantomime as soon as they could. Did they make up their minds too soon as there is a good chance the club can now survive and as ever this opens up the opportunity of a takeover in the summer. We will see what happens over the next few weeks but optimism has returned.

East Stand Views...
The big question for most fans is why we let these players go and why more money has not been put into strengthening the team. £25 million has come in from sales and £30 million spent in addition to the £7 million being allegedly spent on the loan signings. £12 million is still a pathetically small amount to spend to keep this team in the Premier League, if this is achieved by May. At the time of Silva’s arrival there were rumours that Gerard Lopez a millionaire friend or associate of Silva was interested in the club. He runs a Formula 1 team and is interested in buying Lille in France and potentially an English team too. Let us hope.
East Stand Views...
As with most things Hull City related we do not know how long he may remain. His contract is either 18 months with a get out clause at the end of the season or just six months. The bottom line is that he will be hot property by May and even if City survive bigger clubs in the Premier League could be sniffing around. If City do go down then he will walk but worryingly it could still be a struggle to keep him unless the miracle occurs and there is a takeover. To sign up the five loan players could cost £20 - 30 million and if players such as Ronocchia are on £70,000 a week contracts could also be an issue. Several star players were not offered contract extensions so would the current owners commit to these wages and transfer fees as the unpopular sales of Snodgrass and Livermore financed the loan deals and permanent signings of Evandro and Grosicki in January.
opposition and creating opportunities. Loan winger Lazar Markovic was a width of a post away from stealing the points in Manchester. Silva is excelling on the training pitch and the players are being given intensive coaching and learning more tactics besides everyone behind the ball home and away. Silva also has a reputation for reviving the careers of players whose careers were on the slide or developing unknowns and it is also noticeable how well Tom Huddlestone is performing, possibly the best form of his entire career and how well Harry Maguire is playing. The big worry is how long Hull City will hold on to players such as Magure, Robertson, Tymon and Hernandez.

FIONA’S FOOD FOR THOUGHT By Fiona Dwyer, broadcast journalist, PR & media consultant, slave to 2 children and a husband.
Easter Eggs already?
When I was shopping at the weekend I took a step back when I spotted a section devoted to Easter Eggs. Really? Already? I mean it’s not even Lent yet! (I’m writing this mid-February and Ash Wednesday isn’t until March 1st). I mean I know that the retail industry just flips from Christmas to Valentine’s Day to Easter and so on, but I do wish there was a break in there somewhere. And who buys Easter Eggs this early? Isn’t it just asking for trouble to have them sitting there on the shelf, looking so tasty, daring you to eat them, especially if you’re going to give up chocolate for Lent? No, no no!!!! I’m doing what I normally do and leaving it until a few days before Easter itself.
Whatever’s next?
I was on Facebook recently and a post came up in my timeline telling me to “Celebrate my friendship with …..” one of my friends because it was our 2-year Friendversary! Our what? Have you ever heard of it? I mean, I’ve known this particular friend for many more years that that and I just think this is just taking the whole Facebook thing a bit too far. What’s the point? Don’t get me wrong. It’s great for finding out how everyone’s doing and, of course, for looking at videos of cute animals, but is it just me? I have been reliably informed by a colleague at ITV that the Friendversary has been about for a while now, but I’ve personally never noticed it! Anyway, I’d appreciate your thoughts!
Potty training – don’t worry so much!
I was talking to a friend of mine recently who is currently potty training her little boy and all of a sudden she burst out crying from the stress of it. She told me that other mothers were saying/ boasting how advanced their children were because they had allegedly conquered the potty in a matter of days. So she wondered what was she doing that was so wrong? She felt she had no-one to talk to and it was making her cranky with her son who has always been so easy-going. Now this made me very cross because I get so sick and tired of parents who think bringing up children is a competition – and by doing so, make other mums feel worthless. Well, let me tell you, it’s not a competition! All children develop at their own pace. It doesn’t matter if they can’t walk on their 1st birthday or if they still want their dummy. And in my opinion there is no hard or fast rule about potty training. They’ll do it when they’re ready. Don’t get cross with them if they have an accident and wipe it up with a smile on your face and a peg on your nose if necessary! Praise them when they do use the potty and, don’t forget, have pull ups handy at all times! My friend, incidentally, had only been potty training for a week!
