Overweight Pets!

Each month, vet Dr. David Robinson from Kingston Vets will be giving advice about looking after your pets. In this month’s article he discusses the impact that obesity has on pets.

It’s been estimated that half the pet population is overweight with a significant percentage considered to be clinically obese. Overweight pets have a reduced quality of life and, due to the health problems that can develop, a potentially shorter life expectancy. Obese pets are at risk of contracting a number of debilitating conditions, such as diabetes, respiratory disease, cancer, an increased frequency of joint injuries and osteoarthritis. Although obesity is a serious health problem it is entirely preventable. To determine if your pet is overweight look at his body shape and assess body fat. Does he have a pot belly? Is it difficult to feel his ribs under fat? Does he have a broad, flat back and no apparent waist? If the answer is yes to any of these questions, then it’s time to take action. Visit your vet to rule out any medical problems as some drugs and conditions such as hypothyroidism and Cushing’s disease may

cause a pet to be overweight. However, more often than not obesity is caused by overfeeding and too little exercise. Your vet will also advise how much food you should be giving your pet each day, what type of food he should be eating and how much exercise he needs. Pets are likely to eat as much as they are given and we are likely to feed them more than they require, so if you have an obese-prone pet weigh out their daily food rations including treats, in advance and stick to it. You can then weigh your pet at the vets on a regular basis to get some idea of how the diet plan is working. Most people tend to think that dogs and cats need a bowl of food a day. But how much is in one bowl of food? Little do we realise that portion size and between-meal snacks play a major part in the excessive amount of calories consumed. Feeding your little pet a chipolata sausage between meals as a treat may seem pretty harmless, but actually this amount of food for a small dog is the equivalent of a human eating a 12oz steak in one sitting. So you can see how serious the problem is. It’s really important to recognise if your pet is becoming overweight and to help him to slim down so he can lead a healthy, happy and longer life. Kingston Vets offer free diet and exercise advice for your pet. Contact us on 01482 223688 or visit our website www.kingstonvet.co.uk

The championships, which will run from Friday, 9 to Sunday, 11 October, attract competitors from all over the world, with players from 70 countries being invited, including darts champions from 140 national and international events. The total prize fund available for this year’s event is £69,500. Sue Williams, chairperson of the BDO, said: “To qualify for this event every player is a champion in their own right and has earned the right to compete. We are expecting a very high standard and the most amazing thing about the Winmau is that we can never predict who will be crowned champions. This event covers women, men and youth players, girls and boys, and it is this factor that makes the event so special.” Tickets have just been released and are on sale from Hull City Hall. Take advantage of the early bird group offer and buy six single or six weekend tickets and receive two free. This offer is only available until Monday, 31 August and can be claimed when quoting ‘EYEVENTSOFFER’ over the telephone, only at Hull City Hall on (01482) 300300.

The standard of darts is always of the highest order and the fans that flock to Hull help to create the unique atmosphere that the oldest major tournament in world darts deserves. “Good luck to all players - men, women, boys and girls – from myself and everyone at Winmau and our thanks as always to the hard working officials at the BDO and East Riding and Hull councils.” Last year’s winners included Martin Phillips for the men’s category, Anastasia Dobromyslova - women’s, Colin Roelofs - boys, Robyn Byrne - girls and Ricky Chilton - World Disability Dart Association category. Check Out Our Brand New Look!

We have a brand new daytime line up here at 99.8 KCFM – and there’s nothing they lack in experience, brains and erm …beauty? They’re a very obliging bunch – we just asked them to line up against the wall and smile, and bingo! ‘The KCFM Breakfast Show with Matt Hutchinson’ starts the day – he’s the early riser of the bunch and is the one in the middle – we’ve airbrushed away the bags under his eyes. Sam Heywood’s on between 10am and 2pm - she’s the one that’s a girl. Then Rob Langley’s on KCFM Drive until 7pm – you can probably work out which one he is now. We decided to get right to the nitty gritty and find out what we should know about each one of them. “Tea and cake for me” says Matt. Literally wherever he goes he’ll either have a cuppa, a cake, or both. Trying to get him to walk past a branch of Greggs or Coopers is an absolute nightmare! Sam Heywood is a multi-tasker apparently (typical woman). “Even whilst chatting to you I’m preparing tea, hoovering, writing a novel and painting the outside of the house” she says. It must be a quiet day. Rob Langley is the gadget man, with a particular weakness for mobile phones. “It is true that I have more phones than ears to listen to them with – but I don’t care” says Rob. Despite being a sucker for the latest must have he’s still a nightmare to get hold of at the weekend, how does that work?

Admission: £2 Adults - £1 Children • FREE Parking (Sorry no Dogs Allowed except Hearing and Guide Dogs)

There’s loads to listen to during Daytime on 99.8 KCFM that we can only give you the highlights. ‘The KCFM Breakfast Show with Matt Hutchinson’ is out and about visiting a different place in East Yorkshire every week on ‘Right Up Your Street’. Plus Matt’s always going to different schools (chatting up the dinner ladies to get pudding) and asking the children to describe items so that you can guess what they are in ‘Smalltalk’. Find out more by going to the Breakfast page on the website, www.kcfm.co.uk. Sam’s show starts with the mighty ‘Ten @ Ten’ – ten songs from one chosen year at 10am. She’ll help you work out which year by giving clues and playing news, sport, TV and movie clips. Rob Langley’s on Drive when you’re collecting the children from school or doing the run home from work in rush hour. He’ll give you the choice of two big songs on ‘The School Run is Fun’ – the one with the most votes gets played. It almost goes without saying that during the whole day you can expect the very latest travel and weather information, plus local news and sport updates so you know what’s happening across the whole of East Yorkshire – we’re good at that!

Our music is also pretty darn good (even if we do say so ourselves!) We play songs from the 60’s, 70’s, 80’s, 90’s, noughties and the very latest music too – but we only play the best songs from each decade, so you’ll like every single one. Plus, we play more music than anyone else – so you won’t hear the same songs again and again and again.

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! ADVERTISEMENT

It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Branch Manager William Moulds feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can

replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we

will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Hull, Beverley & Driffield areas and William is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal

satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give William a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Ask Mandi

“I am sure that I don’t sound interesting” Dear Mandi Hope you don’t mind a male contacting you. I’m in my early 40’s and been single for 2 years, I really want to find a girlfriend but am finding it really difficult to get one. I do go out with my friends occasionally but I seem to freeze around women and don’t know what to say so would never approach them. I’ve tried internet dating, but again I don’t know what to say and I’m sure I don’t sound interesting enough anyway. I’m an ok looking guy, have a good job, drive a car, have my own house, so what am I doing wrong? I would welcome your advice? Regards Jon Dear Jon Of course I don’t mind you contacting me, you’d be surprised at how many males do call me, and for very similar reasons as you have mentioned. I would like you to think about your situation for your moment & look at the facts. You are single, wish to have a girlfriend, you seem shy & lack confidence. You also put yourself down . When you do this it will attack your self esteem and lower your confidence, so you really need to stop doing this. I want you to look at what you do have going for you, friends, a job etc., make a list of our attributes & good points, and read these to yourself everyday, this will boost your self esteem. When you go out with your friends, try not to see every girl you meet as someone you might like

to go out with, this will effect your nerves. Try to see them as friends, any girl you stand next to, even if you don’t fancy them, take a deep breath, lift your head, smile and just try chatting to them. Have some ideas of what to say, even ‘are you having a good night’ is an opener, believe me they won’t look at you strange & they won’t bite. This will help you practice speaking to females. Extend your practicing talking to girls in the coffee shop or supermarket, you will find that once they respond this will really help. Ask your close friends if there is anything about you that you might change, even a haircut, change of style will boost your confidence, listen to their advice, try not to feel hurt if they do say anything, they’re only trying to help and it could make all the difference. Read some books or go online for tips on confidence building. As you learn to love & like yourself then those lovely ladies out there will begin to like you too, and with a few tweeks here & there that might not be too far away. Best of Luck, Mandi x

20 Ways to Add Value to Your Home. From extensions and kitchen upgrades to soft furnishings, read local property guru Adam Robinsons tips on how to set your house apart from all the others – and get it sold. “It is very difficult to fathom what is going on at the moment,” he says. “One set of stats says the market is going up and another says it’s going down. “Then you have to look at the year we have had so far. First, there was the snow, then the general election. Next, everyone said wait until the World Cup is over, now everyone’s saying wait until the summer is over. In September, though, I am convinced things will become clearer. “Of course, one thing looks certain already, which is that there is going to be a rise in unemployment, particularly in the public sector. That is bound to affect the housing market in those areas where many people are employed by the state. “Clearly, the market overall is not going to be rising by 10, 15 or 20 per cent a year, like it has done in the past, but I do believe it will rise by small amounts, maybe two or three per cent a year. “What this means, of course, is that owning a home is not, in itself, going to earn you enough money to move up to the next price bracket, to the next rung on the property ladder. You can’t just sit back and wait for your house to make you enough money to move on. You are going to have to take active steps to create that extra value for yourself.” And here’s how Adam suggests you do it: 1 Go for a loft conversion The easiest way to get an extra bedroom and bathroom. Not particularly disruptive, either, as most of the work can be done from outside. The key thing is to make sure access to the loft is easy and that the conversion fits the rest of the house, rather than looking grafted on. You will have to strengthen the floor joists, which will raise the floor level, so make sure you leave yourself with sufficient ceiling height to stand up in. Spend £20,000 on a loft conversion and you can add £40,000 value to your house. I am always wary of quoting figures, but for the purposes of this article, I am using a survey of 110 estate agents, carried out by mortgage lender GE Money, which concluded that a loft conversion adds an average 12.5 per cent to the selling price. 2 Build a conservatory Extending your living space is always a good idea, but the danger is that your conservatory ends up looking like something just bolted on the back. Make sure the conservatory matches the style of the rest of the house. Don’t make it seem as if it’s in any way separate, with its own entrance, for example. You can enhance the feeling of space and flow by installing the same flooring throughout your downstairs living area. It leads the eye on and ensures that the conservatory feels

part of the rest of the house. A conservatory (cost £5,000-£30,000) can add around 7 per cent to the value, while a full-blown extension (£10,000-£30,000) adds 11 per cent. 3 Install a basement conversion The most expensive form of extension: it costs £200 per sq foot to do the digging, and another £100 per sq foot to do the fitting out. So unless your house is worth £300 per sq ft, you won’t see your money back. It is also the most serious form of extension, as it is going to affect the structural load of your property. Not to be undertaken lightly, or without careful consideration, then. You will need to hire specialists to do the design and the installation, and you will almost certainly have to move out of the house for several months. That said, you can create fantastic spaces underneath your home, and extending your house like this means you can stay in it for longer, enjoy it more and sell it quicker when the time comes. I have just had a basement put in at my home in south-west London. It cost £300 per sq foot to dig and fit out, but houses in the street sell for between £700 and £900 per sq foot, depending on condition – which, in theory, means that for every £1 invested into the house, potentially £3 was added to its value. Also, when I bought the house it was 2,200 sq feet and now with basement and kitchen extension it is 4,000 sq feet – so it has virtually doubled in size. As I say, the real value lies in increasing your living space. 4 Get rid of the garage And turn it into living space. The fact is, 90 per cent of British garages don’t contain a car. They are a wasted asset. Cost: about £10,000. To calculate value added, multiply square footage gained by local price per square foot. 5 Take aim at your target Work out who is your most likely type of buyer and present the property accordingly. This will determine whether you present a spare room as, say, an office, a play room, a gym or a study. 6 Pave over the front garden If you live in the countryside, and garden aesthetics are an important feature of the property’s presentation, keep the flower beds. But if you want to add value in an area where parking is at a premium, then it is concrete every time. You may need planning permission, and may have to spend £10-£20,000, but added value could be £50,000 in an expensive urban location. 7 Paint the house If you are selling, you have to get buyers through the front door, which means you need to have the outside as spick and span as possible (cost £100-£1,000, but could add £5,000). If nothing else, your house should at least look better than your neighbours’. Clean those dirty windows, clear the driveway, unblock the gutters.

Property Feature 8 Change the windows But only if they don’t match the house as it is now. I am a big believer that whatever you decide to do should suit the age and style of the original property. If it was meant to have wooden windows, then put wooden windows in. If metal, then put in metal. Otherwise, leave well alone.

16 Look above your head You can never have too much storage space, and one of the best ways of increasing it is to use the ceiling voids.

9 Refurbish the front door Does it look smart? If not, buy a new doorknob (£35), brass letterbox (£25) or a stainless steel house number (£5-£25). When we were redesigning the front of our house, we cycled around the area and took photographs of other people’s front doors. You get some great ideas that way. 10 Hang mirrors in the hall The hall is the first thing the buyer sees, yet it is often narrow, cramped and full of prams, bikes and trainers. A mirror on either side of the wall makes it seem magically bigger. 11 Concentrate on the kitchen If you are only going to improve one room, make it the kitchen. This has now become the showpiece area of the home. We don’t just cook in it, we do homework in it, we watch television in it and hold dinner parties there. The number one priority is creating a handsome and efficient work surface and ensuring easy access between the three points of the kitchen triangle, that is, the sink, fridge and cooker (high street kitchen firms have got surprisingly good at drawing up designs). Install equipment that is as up to date as possible, so it won’t look outmoded in 10 years. And make sure the price bracket of your kitchen matches the price bracket of your house. There is no point putting a £25,000 kitchen in a £250,000 house; you won’t see your money back. Equally, put a £10,000 kitchen in a £1 million house, and you will drag down the value. Typically, a new kitchen will add 4.6 per cent onto the value. 12 Knock down the walls Those that aren’t load-bearing, anyway. Buyers are more interested in the amount of usable space, rather than the number of rooms.

13 Do the bathroom next This is the other room that has really taken off lately. The secret is to keep things simple. You don’t need to do a lot with the room, it’s all about the features that you put in, such as a set of new taps (£20), a heated chrome towel rail (£50), a big new shower head (£20), a power shower (£250-£750), a glass screen (£100) or glass door (£125) instead of a shower curtain. A new bathroom puts 2.88 per cent onto the house value.

17 Bring the garden into the house Not literally, but make it accessible and enjoyable from the house. Glass doors are a good idea, as is outdoor lighting. View the garden as another room; install decking (£250 up to £5,000) and you can add two per cent to the house value. 18 Apply for planning permission Even if you don’t have the money to build an extension or a conversion, you’ll make money purely by having secured permission to do so: you’ll spend £1,000-£2,000 on survey, design and planning processing, but you’ll elevate your property into a higher league. It removes a big element of doubt from a buyer’s mind, if they know the council have already said yes to expansion. 19 Phone a friend Having someone recommend a builder is like gold dust. Let’s face it, the odds of probability are heavily stacked against the builder-client relationship being a happy one. Building work takes time, it is expensive, it disrupts your house, so it is great when the home owner has good things to say about the builder at the end of the job. Please contact the builders who are advertising in Beverley Mag and ask for references if you don’t have a friend who has used a builder recently.

20 Take a view on timescale Get a big builder in and they will probably do the job quicker, but for a higher price. Hire a smaller builder and it will probably take longer, but be cheaper. You’ll have to work out your own time-versus-money equation on this one.

14 Put in central heating If it’s not already there. You’ll spend £1,000-£3,000, but will add £5,000 to the value. 15 Don’t bother with the bedrooms Apart from a few soft furnishings here and there.

An ISA or PROPERTY?

The Deal Once the £15,000 was safely in the bank, I managed to find a 3 bed terraced house in Hull.

By Chris Dearing

So the Conservatives won the General Election, New Labour, The Lib Dems and UKIP have all disappeared into the sunset and the new pension breaks for the over 55’s came into effect. Everyone with a lump sum can now take up to 25% tax free, or all of the cash subject to their own personal tax situation. So we could buy a new car, an exotic holiday on a cruise, or a new conservatory to cheer us up when it’s pouring with rain in the garden this summer. But this money was for our retirement and we still need to provide our wives, husbands, & partners and all our children the income for the future if we want to secure a quite life in time to come if possible We have all heard the alternatives to our pensions, such as purchasing Gold or Silver, bonds or shares. All of which can go up or down & we need to be experts or to rely on experts to look after us in the short, medium, and long term of our investments. According to www.thisismoney.co.uk as of the 25th May 2015 the best ISA’s on the market place was the Halifax where if you use your new full cash allowance of £15,000 for 2015, you will receive 1.25% interest if you fix for one year. Wow a whopping £187.50 I really don’t know what to spend the cash on first!

OR The one thing I do know about is bricks & mortar and it is generally said that property can double in value every seven years. We all know what happened in 2007 and 2008 when all hell broke loose with the banks and it all went south, but time prevailing it should & is already in places back to pre 2007 valuations. So with that in mind here is a situation that happened to me. Instead of taking up the governments offer, I withdrew £15,000, from my savings pot. Not because I needed the cash, but to do an experiment with the cash itself. Using the cash from my savings as a deposit to see if I could beat the ISA system which we all pretty much know how they work, to the investment in Buy-to-Let with good old fashioned bricks and mortar. Having been in Buy-to-Let since 2003 and helping many others start an investment portfolio as my role as an Independent & Whole of Market Mortgage Broker I had some advantages, but none that could not be passed on to any other would be investor.

Sale Price was £59,000. Valuation & Solicitor costs approx £900.00 and cosmetic costs £500.00. Mortgage on an interest only basis is £113.00 per month on a 2.99% 2 year fixed rate. I can also if I wish pay 10% extra of the mortgage balance with no charges for the first 2 years then any extra payments over the term. Next required a tenant, and 14 minutes on Facebook with a brief description, secured all the interest required to then sort & check the prospective tenants while the cosmetics of the property took place. Rent £450.00 per month on a standard Assured Shorthold Tenancy Agreement (AST for short) and £450.00 bond into the governments Deposit Protection Scheme. Job Done!

Let’s Do the Maths! Sale Price £59,000 Purchase Price £59,000 Deposit £14750 Mortgage £44250 Solicitors & Valuation £900 Once only Cosmetics & Labour £500.00 including electrical safety Insurance £164.00 per annum Gas Check £40.00 per annum EPC £50.00 every 10 yrs Total £1654 Rent £450.00 x 12 Mortgage £113.00 x 12

Profit £4044 Total costs £3,010 Profit £1,034 Year 1 Profit £2488 Year 2 Profit £2488 Year 3 Profit £2488 year 4 Profit £2488 Year 5 Total 5yr plan £10,986 As per 25th May 2015 on www.rightmove.co.uk the same property in the same postcode is currently for sale at £74,950. So if I decided to sell tomorrow, then in 8 months a total profit of £28,646 could be achieved and I could also use my allowance and the wife’s allowance of £22,200 each - Capital Gains Tax for the current 2015 Tax year. I think I will give the ISA’s a miss! Contact Chris Dearing at CG Financial Services

The Creative & Cultural Column by Alan Raw

Carry On.... At Your Convenience There’s a scene in the Film, ‘Carry on...At Your Convenience’ where the entire toilet factory workforce, boss and all, take a day trip to the seaside. To anyone who was first employed or brought up after the 80’s this probably seems like a rather desperate plot device to shoehorn in some seaside postcard humour. But there was a time when works outings, works dances and works sporting events punctuated the working life of lots of people. There were plenty of downsides to industrial working life; injury, illness and mind numbing boredom spring to mind. But many if not most factory owners held a sense of responsibility towards their workforce. At its most paternalistic, it was all temperance lectures and self-improvement. At its most liberal, there were plenty of social clubs, dancing and boozy trips by charabanc to the seaside.

The annual works outing (circa 1965).

large dose of vanity. But many of the most celebrated and influential composers and artists were able to pursue their muse thanks to the patronage of others. J.S. Bach, Beethoven and Mozart had patrons who paid them to produce music. Leonardo da Vinci had the Medicis and Borgias, Michelangelo also had the Medicis plus various Popes. Now it has fallen to the government to take up the heaviest burden, through the Arts Council, Sport England, the National Lottery and a myriad of other agencies.

A typical saturday night in a Working Mens Club (circa 1974).

Up until the 80s and beyond, Hull had so many works-based sports teams that they needed their own leagues for rugby, football and cricket. A factory might have its own sporting facilities, playing fields and sports centres. And all of this would be subsidised, by the company and the takings from the social clubs. But it wasn’t all footy and day trips. There were gardening shows, photography competitions, musical and comedy turns at the social club and depending on the social principles of the bosses, the opportunity for self-improvement through education. It certainly makes the buffet and cheap wine at the standard office party look a bit tight-fisted and, arguably, short-sighted. So where did it all go? Well, the destruction of our industrial base in the 80s certainly put an end to most of this enlightened capitalism and the death blow came with globalisation. Many international corporations don’t really have a social investment in the country, so they probably aren’t going to want to subsidise a library, let alone take pride in the sporting prowess of a few of their workers in a provincial backwater.

The legendary ‘yard of ale’ club competition.

In this month that hosts Hull Biz Week, I see that 2017 and the City of Culture are among the topics being discussed. With companies being asked how they can offer support. I simply ask locally based businesses to continue to value & support the cultural life of your workforce as much as you are able in these hard times, because that is one area where you have always led the way in our city. Celebrate the role you have already played in Hulls culture and carry on. Oh, and if someone tells you that sport, trips to Brid and watching a ‘turn’ in the social club are not culture, they don’t know what real culture is. Contact Alan at: www.alanraw.com

As I pointed out in last month’s column, the poster boys of corporate social responsibility in Hull were undoubtedly the Reckitts and their friends and relations. Garden village, the first public libraries in the city, a first rate art gallery and more, stand as testament to their commitment to Hull in general and their workforce in particular. But every big business shared the burden of supporting and facilitating the cultural life of the city and we shall probably never see its like again. This all helps to explain why the role of government in supporting culture is now so vital. Art and culture has never survived by public subscription alone. Sponsors and patrons have always played an essential role. Once it was princes, merchants and industrialists and their motivation may well have included a

Efteling Theme Park ...

Stepping off P&O North Sea Ferries, following a super night onboard, just over an hour away from Rotterdam’s Europort is Europe’s amazing 3rd largest Theme Park. Over the years I have booked the odd family to visit but it is not commonly known about in our country. Having been to visit myself I can say you will not be disappointed, and at a fraction of the cost to visiting Disney this is a viable alternative for a family holiday. From the moment you arrive at Efteling you will become enchanted in the forest with the way fairy tales are brought to life in beautiful grounds appealing to young toddlers to the most senior members of the family. Don’t miss the talking tree, Hansel & Gretel, Sleeping beauty, Tom Thumb, The Emperor's fine Clothes and many more of our well known tales. Getting around the park you can hop and off the train or simple amble leisurely amongst super gardens. Of course any theme park is not complete without daring roller coasters I almost ended up on one inside the big bird. Fortunately as there was not a queue I turned quickly and exited before trying the roller coaster in the dark, which many will love but not me! If you are looking for a thrill, the latest roller coaster is the Baron 1898, this dive rollercoaster has just opened perhaps save this till last and try out the Paraná & Bobsleigh first. This theme park has something to suite everyone. For a birds eye view of the park the Pagoda a flying Thai temple takes you high above the trees. I visited the park on a Dutch bank holiday and there was very little waiting time for rides - another plus against other theme parks we may visit. Traditional carousel rides are in abundance both indoors and outdoors should the weather be inclement during your visit. I suppose a theme park is also not complete without sedate boat rides and car rides which you will also find at Efteling. There are a good choice of shops and cafes in the park and prices are kind to your pocket. Little girls dresses starting at 10 Euros and Cinderella slippers at 4 Euros this does not break the bank for a little souvenir that our children always love to bring home with them. How are you going to get there I hear you ask? Well you may wish to take your car over and stay a while and make a proper holiday of this we are able to tailor make a package to suite your needs whether by sailing from Hull, Dover or Newcastle. June/July Gardening

Water thoroughly once or twice a week rather than little and often - this encourages plants to put down roots in search of water rather than coming up to the surface. Remember, though, that containers and hanging baskets need watering every day and sometimes even twice a day if it is hot and windy. For recently planted large shrubs or trees, leave a hose trickling around the base for an hour. The same goes for established plants in very dry periods - pay particular attention to camellias, rhododendrons, azaleas and hydrangeas which will abort next season’s flowers if they get too dry. Mulch around the roots when moist to help avoid this. Recently planted hedges are best watered with a trickle hose (a length of old hose punctured with little holes) left running for an hour or so. Ensure trees or shrubs planted in the last couple of years on lawns or in areas of rough grass have a circle of clear earth around them - this must be kept clear or grass will prevent essential moisture getting through. Mulching with bark or compost will help. Water is a precious commodity - instigate good practices such as using kitchen and bath water (as long as it is neither too dirty, greasy nor full of detergent) for watering, collect rainwater in butts (available from the centre) and investigate ways to recycle water for your irrigation. Avoid using tap water for lime-hating plants such as camellias, rhododendrons and azaleas - they will not thank you for it! The key to successful planting, whether it be a shrub, tree, perennial or bedding plant is to water in well. Soak the rootball in a bucket until no air bubbles come to the surface, dig the planting hole, fill with water and allow to drain away. Place the plant in the hole, fill with soil, firm gently and water well with a watering can - this will give the plant a huge advantage over one planted with a dry rootball in a dry hole and watered only on the surface. Hoe beds and borders to get rid of annual weeds, like bitter cress and chickweed. If it’s dry, attack perennial weeds like ground elder and the like with systemic weed killer painted onto the leaves and trail tips of bindweed into jam jars full of the same. Remember systemic weed killers are indiscriminate and will kill anything they contact. If you don’t have time to do this, at least cut the culprits down to prevent them from setting seed.

Trees, shrubs and climbers Trim hedges such as privet, hawthorn, beech, yew, thuja, leylandii and lonicera - don’t bother with secateurs unless you have time on your hands - a broad chop with sharp shears is fine. Prune early summer flowering shrubs such as weigela, philadelphus and deutzia after they have flowered to avoid the leggy look. Cut out some of the oldest wood (up to a third of the bush) right down to the base - don’t leave it too late or the new growth will not have enough time to produce a decent show for next year’s flowering... procrastinate at your peril! Keep spraying roses with fungicide to ward against black spot and mildew. Do this in the evening to avoid harming bees. Repeat every fortnight until the autumn. Remember stricken leaves must be burnt - do not leave them on the compost heap as this will become the perfect incubation site. Feed with a foliar feed and beware greenfly - treat immediately if an infestation occurs - ask in the garden centre for advice as to what to use if you are unsure. Keep deadheading roses regularly, cutting back to the nearest five leaf spray with sharp secateurs - just breaking the stem leaves the rose more vulnerable to infection. Keep an eye open for rose suckers (which appear from low down and have different leaves) and remove by pulling downwards and tearing - cutting them will merely encourage them to reappear!

Keep your pond topped up with fresh water - a build up of algae in warm weather can be toxic, if not fatal, for animals. Lawns Keep mowing your lawn but raise the height of your blades if the weather remains hot. Feed established lawns if you haven’t already done so with a summer lawn feed. If your lawn is mossy or full of weeds, use a feed with mosskiller or weedkiller, although this will also kill any wild flowers. If you have the lot, use combined feed, weed and mosskiller! Add your grass clippings to the compost heap in shallow layers. A huge dollop will only turn slimy and spoil your compost. Don’t let newly laid lawns dry out in hot weather - water in the evenings and if there is a heat wave, consider leaving the lawn longer than usual just to help it through the hot weather. If you are planning to seed a new lawn in the autumn, start preparing the area to allow the earth time to settle. Birds As summer wears on and the ground hardens, it becomes more difficult for birds to forage for food. So do please put out food to supplement their diet and help build reserves for winter.

Container Gardens Growing plants in containers is a great way to bring life and colour into otherwise dull spots in your garden. Patios, balconies and window boxes are all places where plants can be easily introduced in containers. Plants in containers do require more care than those in gardens, but by following our advice you will find this easy. Plants for containers Almost any type of plant can be grown in a container. Generally, the bigger the pot and the plant, the easier it is to care for. Soft, fleshy, leafy plants such as tomatoes and fuchsias are more demanding than ‘leathery’ plants such as pelargoniums (tender geraniums) or lavender. Other plants to grow in containers include: Lilies, Roses, Trees, Fruit, Herbs and many many
Vegetables.

Summer care Plants in containers need attention all year, but summer is the most critical period as plants can soon run short of water and nutrients. Watering l Check for moisture daily from April to September (twice daily in hot weather). l Water thoroughly, filling the container to the rim and allowing it to drain, then filling it a second time to ensure that the whole of the compost is adequately moistened. l If water is not draining out freely, check the drainage holes for blockage and assess compost structure. l Lining or sealing terracotta pots with waterproof materials is unlikely to significantly reduce the need to water as most water is lost though plant leaves.

Planting Plant in early spring so that plants quickly put out roots and become established. Autumn planting may lead to losses from waterlogging and evergreens may deteriorate over winter from dryness at the roots or wind-burn of the foliage. Watering Watering is one of the most important jobs when growing plants in containers. Not enough water will cause plants to dry out, and maybe die. On the other hand overwatering is very damaging, as most plants do not like sitting in water. See the advice below on summer care and winter care for information on watering plants in containers. Re-potting Plant roots eventually fill containers and this often reduces growth. This is not necessarily a bad thing as slightly stressed plants are often attractive and the slower growth reduces the maintenance needed. However, eventually the plant will need to be moved to a bigger container or the compost refreshed in the same pot, as composts lose their structure over time. Shrubs and trees that stay in a pot for years are especially vulnerable unless re-potted.

l Grouping pots for mutual shade will reduce heat stress on pots.

These steps will ensure success when re-potting into a larger container:

Feeding l From April to the end of August use a general-purpose proprietary liquid feed or, preferably, a high-nitrogen feed.

l When moving plants to a larger container, (one size larger at each stage), re-pot in early spring as soon as they show signs of growth

l Mulching pots will help reduce heating and suppress weeds, but as most water is lost through plant leaves careful watering will still be needed.

l Alternatively, add a controlled-release fertiliser at planting time.

l Remove a little of the old compost, slide the plant out and tease out roots, cutting them if necessary.

l With soil-less composts, make sure fertiliser includes essential trace elements.

l When it is no longer convenient to repot them every year into a bigger pot, they should be repotted in the same pot at least every other year. Replace onethird of existing compost and roots with fresh compost.

l After late summer feeding is usually suspended until mid-spring; however bedding plants and other short-lived annuals will still benefit from feeding until early autumn.

In years when re-potting is not carried out, topdress by removing 5cm (2in) old compost from the top of the pot and replacing with fresh compost.

l Feed when the compost is moist.

We have completely thrown away an opportunity to become an established Premier League team such as Stoke City. We have not been particularly out played in most matches, we have thrown away 15-20 points in matches and even if some players felt they could coast through the season the inevitable conclusion was relegation as we ran out of fixtures to get the points we required. Although the Burnley defeat was the key failure the die was cast from the the autumn onwards, dropping so many points from winning positions against Newcastle, West Ham and Arsenal or failing to take guilt edged opportunities in matches such as Leicester on Boxing Day. We frittered away so many opportunities that could have given them 40 points by April as the end of season fixtures looked daunting and Liverpool excepted the results were anticipated. The Burnley defeat was disastrous but not unexpected. Bottom the league Burnley with no victories all season – first home win against us in November and then the match we required 100% commitment, imagination and ruthlessness – same result in May. There have been so many reasons for failure but one key factor has been the

Twelve months ago we were still glowing from the feeling of coming close to an FA Cup victory and Hull City were building a side for a midtable position in the Premier League. Little did we expect that many of the very same players would let us down so much the following season and we would drop out of the division with a whimper.

So what is the aftermath? The future is uncertain. The club announced that thankfully everyone was due wage cuts after relegation so better prepare than the last time but unfortunately we form of last years key performers. FIONA’S FOOD FOR THOUGHT By Fiona Dwyer, broadcast journalist, PR & media consultant, slave to 2 children and a husband.

ARE YOU A WIZARD OR A MAD HATTER? If you’re anything like me you hate being late for anything. If I’m catching a train I’m one of those people who simply has to be on the platform at least half an hour before the train even pulls into the station because I worry I’m going to miss it! I’m not saying I’m never late – I am (not for a train though!) – but it makes me feel awful, rushed and terribly apologetic to whomever I’m meant to be meeting. This actually brings to mind a quote from “Lord of the Rings” in which Gandalf says “A wizard is never late. Nor is he early. He arrives precisely when he means to!” Oh, to be a wizard!! My mother always used to say that there’s no point putting your foot down on the accelerator if you’re late because you should have left 5 or 10 minutes earlier – and she was right! It’s all about organisation – and she was probably the most organised person I’ve ever known! Our kitchen clock at home was always set five minutes fast. Even though we knew it, it still made us speed up getting ready, which is why my kitchen clock is now also at least 5 minutes fast. If you have children, making sure school uniforms are ironed and laid out the night before is also a good move to help the morning rush go more smoothly, as is getting school and work bags packed with anything needed for the next day! But, of course, nobody is perfect - certainly not me! But if we can take steps to organise ourselves so that we’re not shouting “Why haven’t you got your shoes on yet? We’ve got to leave right now!” and “What do you mean you can only find one of them?” only to realise as you’ve locked the front door that you’ve forgotten to shut the bathroom window so you’ve got to go back in again anyway (surely I’m not the only person that happens to?!) then it actually makes life so much easier and we feel good about it!
