The New Law on Dog Microchipping Each month, vet Dr. David Robinson from the Kingston Veterinary Group will be giving advice about looking after your pets. In this month’s Pets Page he talks about the importance of microchipping. From April 6 it will be compulsory to have your dog microchipped by the time it is eight weeks old, and failure to do so could result in a fine of up to £500. Dog theft is on the increase in the UK, so it has never been a better time to have your pet microchipped. Recent figures show almost a quarter of a million dogs have been reunited with their owners thanks to microchipping, and here at Kingston Vets we have had many instances over the years where we have been able to return a lost pet to its owner.

Diabetes in Pets Just like humans, your pet can also develop diabetes, so knowing how to spot symptoms could help to save its life. Pets with diabetes may not be able to produce enough insulin, or their bodies do not allow them to use insulin efficiently. When this happens, glucose cannot enter the body’s cells and it begins to accumulate in the blood, causing the cells to be starved of energy. Knowing the symptoms of diabetes and getting veterinary advice if you feel something is wrong is the first step to protect your pet’s health. Symptoms of diabetes can develop very gradually and can include: l Increased urination and thirst – as blood sugar levels become high they spill into the urine and increase urine production. You may notice that your pet is urinating more often or is having accidents in the house. In turn, increased urination will cause an increase in thirst. l Weight loss (often despite an increased appetite) – when the cells in your pet’s body are starved of essential nutrients, the result is often an increase in appetite. However, because energy from food is not being used efficiently your pet can lose weight. l General weakness and lethargy – your pet is tired, lacks energy and is reluctant to go for a walk or to play.

Whilst collars and tags can be removed, microchipping identifies your pet permanently and helps to quickly reunite lost pets with their rightful owners, as well as discouraging dog theft. Microchipping is not an expensive procedure, particularly when you consider the benefits it brings. A microchip is an electronic device about the size of a grain of rice and is implanted under the skin between your pet’s shoulder blades using a needle and special syringe. The procedure is similar to having an injection. Each microchip has a unique identification number, which can be read using a handheld device. If a vet, animal warden or the police find your pet they will scan for the chip to get the identification number. This will then be matched to the owner’s contact details on an approved microchip database. Microchipping is only effective if you keep your details up to date on the microchip database, and this will also become a legal requirement for dogs from April. It is therefore important to let the database company know if you move home, change your telephone number, or if the ownership of the pet changes. Apart from dogs, other pets also benefit from being microchipped. These include cats, rabbits, birds and even tortoises so check with your vet for advice.

l Vision problems – another symptom of diabetes is blindness. This mainly affects dogs but cats can also be affected due to diabetic cataracts. l Your pet’s breath has a chemical smell, similar to nail polish remover. l Obesity – if your pet is obese you should keep an eye on him, as being overweight can cause diabetes to develop. Your vet will test your pet’s urine for the presence of glucose, and if it is found will then measure your pet’s blood glucose concentration. Although diabetes can’t be cured, the good news is that it can be successfully managed with insulin therapy, diet and exercise. The goal is to regulate glucose levels and to reduce or eliminate the symptoms of diabetes. With successful diabetes management your pet can go on to lead a healthy and active life.

If you have any queries about your pet’s health you can ask Kingston Veterinary Group for advice. Contact us on 01482 223688 or visit our website www.kingstonvet. co.uk

New Hull City Council Campaign Highlights 16 Smoking-Related Cancers Hull City Council has launched a hard-hitting new campaign to raise awareness that smoking is directly linked to 16 different cancers.

Every month, 40 people in Hull die from conditions directly related to smoking – meaning that at least one family loses a loved one every single day. While most smokers know about the link between smoking and lung cancer, many people do not realise that smoking is linked with not one but 16 different cancers, including cancers of the mouth, nasal cavities, pharynx and larynx, stomach, kidney, bowel, liver, pancreas, ureter, oesophagus, cervix, bladder and ovaries as well as myeloid leukaemia.

Quit16 is a hard-hitting campaign being launched by a cohort of local authorities, including Hull City Council, that highlights the 16 cancers associated with smoking and asks people to quit. It is the first region-wide anti-smoking campaign that includes advertising on television and online, by local tobacco control alliances, collaborating as Breathe 2025, and supported by Cancer Research UK. It is based on a campaign first developed and run in Australia in 2014 by the Cancer Council Western Australia, with 74 per cent of smokers who saw it seriously considering quitting and 20 per cent discussing quitting with a health professional as a result.

Hull has the second highest adult smoking rates in the country, with around 30 per cent of residents – 63,000 people – still smoking. The campaign launched on Monday 1 February, and runs throughout the month. The campaign website is www. QUIT16.co.uk

Julia Weldon, Director of Public Health, said: “This is an extremely hard-hitting campaign, but it is also very honest: there are 16 cancers caused by smoking. Some will kill you quickly, others more slowly and it’s you and your family that have to live through it. Stopping smoking is the best thing you can do to reduce the risk that one of those deaths will be you.

“A range of support is available for those smokers who do want to give up – you can find details of how we can help you quit. There is support to suit everyone, from face-to-face to text messages, or apps.

For details, visit Quit16.co.uk or hullcc.gov.uk.

“This campaign is just the latest step we are taking to encourage people to stop smoking and raise awareness of the risks. We are constantly working towards the ideal of a smoke-free future for Hull – this is the focus of my Director of Public Health Annual Report this year, which sets out what our ambition is, what we’ve done so far and what we’re going to do next”.

Cllr Helena Spencer, Portfolio Holder for Public Health, Prevention and Safeguarding Adults, said:

“Our ultimate goal is for the future for today’s children to be one where smoking is not a normal thing for people to do.” “Far too many people in this city are still either dying or losing loved ones unnecessarily. While this campaign certainly does not tread softly and many people will find it brutally honest, if it helps people make that decision to quit, then it will have done its job.

“Smoking is not sexy, it is not glamorous and it is not safe – it is dangerous and the sooner that message gets through, the better”.

Dr Louise Merriman, the GP cancer lead at the Yorkshire and Humber Strategic Clinical Network said:
“Most people are aware that smoking can cause lung cancer, but there is a huge lack of general awareness about the true health harms of smoking. People who smoke are at an increased risk of a range of cancers and you’re also more likely to have a stroke, a heart attack, and develop different health conditions including coronary heart disease.

“We want to encourage all smokers out there to find out more about quitting. Your GP can give you lots of advice and information and there are a range of resources available to help you.”

Dr Julie Sharp, Cancer Research UK’s head of health and patient information, said: “Many people are aware of the link between smoking and lung cancer but many are unaware that it’s linked to many other cancers as well, including mouth, bowel and bladder cancer.

“The best thing smokers can do is give up - for their own health as well as their friends’ and family’s. Quitting can be extremely difficult, but it greatly reduces the risk of smoking-related cancers, as well as other illness such as heart and lung disease. For those who are ready to give up, local Stop Smoking Services are the best place to start. The earlier you stop smoking the better but it’s never too late to quit.”

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! ADVERTISEMENT

It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Branch Manager William Moulds feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can

replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we

will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Hull, Beverley & Driffield areas and William is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal

satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give William a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Business News

Fantastic Launch Night! The Business Culture Hull officially launched this week (Tuesday 9th February) at the KC Stadium to a massive audience of over 100 local businesses as well as several people from the culture sector of the City. The night started off by Tony Bowler, host and founder, sharing his vision. His message was simply to go back to basics and connect with people from both the commercial and cultural sectors of Hull in one an all-inclusive people networking group. He gave a great analogy of his time growing up on Orchard Park Estate where everyone knew each other and everyone watched out for each other and how the community came together as one. Tony said “If we can go back to basics and learn to talk to people as people and not be so driven by business work will naturally flow. When the foundations are built on friendship and trust any business relationship that may come will flourish as you are more likely to support and look out for each other”. The main guest speaker, Rob Bell, gave a very inspirational talk about the history of Hull and his vision for its future.

Rob said afterwards “the buzz in the room was fantastic and it spoke volumes for how much people want to engage in the business of culture”. We were then entertained by Mike Watts who described himself as ‘a street poet’. Mike’s energy and passion certainly lifted the room to another level, he was brilliant! Mike is very proud of the three books he has written and produced and in his very comical way announced that his books are officially the most stolen books for Hull library! The night was due to finish at 8:30pm put most stayed on until after the bar had shut which just goes to show how vibrant the night was. The Business Culture Hull will meet up every first Monday of the month and in venues ranging from Thieving Harrys to Kardohma94. Tony’s thoughts are that once you are in an informal environment people are more likely to relax and forge and talk. For more information please visit the ‘events’ page and if you would like to become a member please visit the ‘Join’ page.

Hull UK City of Culture 2017 is today publishing detailed guidelines on how to apply for funding through its Creative Communities Programme.

All projects will be assessed against four key aims. They must: celebrate arts and culture; be open to all; engage people and communities in Hull; and go beyond the every day.

Grants ranging from £300 to £10,000 are available for arts and cultural projects that will become part of Hull’s UK City of Culture year in 2017.

The Creative Communities Programme is open to individuals and organisations from across the UK. As large numbers of applications are expected, the guidelines are being published on the Hull 2017 website now so potential applicants can prepare submissions before applications open on Monday, April 4, 2016.

The CC Programme team will select projects that are creative at heart, transformational in effect, and celebrate arts and culture. Hull 2017 wants to fund ideas that release the original voices and defiant spirit of the city; projects that connect Hull’s communities, look to the future and create experiences and memories.

Stay Safe: Be a “Smart Pedestrian” “Smart Pedestrians” is a new road safety campaign being rolled out by Hull City Council, in partnership with Kingstown Works, which aims to reduce the number of injuries to pedestrians when distracted by their smartphones.

The only official statistics held relate to accidents involving drivers using phones, yet increasingly pedestrians, and especially young people, are at risk when using their phones and becoming oblivious to their surroundings.

The poster campaign asks people to be smarter than their smart phone. The posters have been distributed to secondary schools, colleges and Hull University; libraries; sports and leisure facilities; community centres and health care centre. They will also be displayed on local buses.

Cllr Alan Clark, Cabinet Member responsible for road safety, said: “Smartphones let us be in touch with friends, family and colleagues however, It’s easy to become engrossed with them and not focus on crossing the road, potentially putting our lives and those of other road users at risk.”

Mally Findlay, Performance & Quality Manager for Kingstown Works Limited said: “We are proud to sponsor a campaign which supports the safety and wellbeing of pedestrians. KWL manages a fleet of 650 vehicles for Hull City Council and other organisations in Hull, so road safety is a top priority.”

It’s not a Wedding until… Choosing A Theme There are a few things that are guaranteed to make an appearance at every wedding day. Get your bingo cards at the ready.... When it comes to your wedding day, some things are pretty much guaranteed. Our advice? Just embrace the madness! 1. Your dad sees you in your dress for the first time and tells you how proud he is of you. Tears all round, swiftly followed by emergency make-up repair. Wet wipe, here, now! 2. The vicar or registrar makes a joke about the bride not turning up. Funny for the guests; anxiety inducing for the groom. (FYI it’s a bride’s prerogative to keep her man waiting a teensy bit). 3. You hear the opening bar of your entrance song and feel a bit wobbly. Then you see the faces of everyone you love and feel 100% awesome! 4. Your groom kicks off his speech with “My wife and I...”. Cue whoops, cheers and a few muffled sobs from the bridesmaid who’s had the lion’s share of the table wine. 5. You have to put your hands over Granny’s ears during the best man’s speech. No gran should hear the story about what went down on the 2015 5-a-side lads’ weekend away. 6. You smile so much you think your face might get stuck like that forever, but kind of in a good way. 7. Someone slips while attempting to catch the bouquet. Then tries to style it out by casually hobbling off, flowers in hand. Move along, nothing to see over here… 8. An usher ends up with his tie around his head. Inevitable. 9. Your mum and aunties hit the dance floor, whilst loudly proclaiming, “now this is how it’s done”. Hopefully not to Beyoncé Single Ladies though. That’s wrong! 10. Something you thought was soooo important doesn’t go entirely to plan, and you couldn’t care less because you are having the BEST DAY EVER!

Y

Y

Y

Over the past couple of decades a lot more thought has gone into planning wedding themes. So, begin by choosing a theme that will be the foundation of your wedding and will influence the way the day plays out, but be sure choices can be accommodated within budget. Your theme will guide you through your clothing and decorating choices. It will even determine the wedding favours you offer and, perhaps, the type of meal served. The theme can be a colour or combination of colours, an era or a season, a country or a culture, an object or a shared passion. Above all, it should reflect both your personalities.

If you hire an entertainer along with a DJ or musicians, you and your guests will have a lot of fun. This will allow you both to circulate around the room and there won’t be any uncomfortable lulls. A good DJ will adapt to the age and tastes of the guests and keep the momentum going. Just be sure that whoever is hired can entertain according to your theme.

SOME IDEAS FOR SURPRISING YOUR GUESTS

Plan a unique arrival at the reception. Set up a photo booth with wacky accessories. Provide a guest book that can sign and leave messages in. Work out a dance routine to perform together or with your wedding party. Have a karaoke machine for later on at the reception. Release lanterns into the sky when it gets dark, or plan some fireworks. Hire a magician, a croupier and casino tables, or a caricaturist. Serve custom cocktails, poured by a professional bartender who can juggle bottles and do some spectacular tricks. Creating atmosphere is the to your reception. So start planning early, keep your theme within budget – a memorable and successful doesn’t have to break the bank. Sometimes, less is more! Avoid Wedding Mistakes... Organising a wedding is a big job and every couple want everything to be just right but sometimes that can lead to costly – and all too common – mistakes. By avoiding the following, your special day should go off without a hitch or, rather, end with bride and groom happily hitched! MISTAKE 1: NOT HAVING A BUDGET

Budget planning is an important part of any wedding. Having a budget means that you decide in advance where all your hard-earned savings are going. a budget should prevent over spending or spending money on the wrong things. do not be tempted to over-step you budget.

MISTAKE 2: GROUP SHOPPING

Shopping for a bridal gown with friends and family members is not necessarily a good idea. The reason is simple: Everyone has their own opinion! Even if they don’t openly discuss their tastes, often a look or a grimace reflects their ideas and not yours. The obvious danger is in being influenced to choose a gown that somebody else has been dreaming about rather than the one you’ve always wanted. it may be preferable to go shopping with just one other person; someone who can be counted on for their honest and objective opinion.

Expert Beauty Advice for Your Wedding Day STYLES COME AND GO So avoid quirky or edgy make up trends that will easily date. Instead, aim for a low key classic style on your wedding day that will look timeless in your photos for decades to come. MATCH YOUR FOUNDATION To avoid a skin colour variation between face, neck and body, match foundation to the skin tone of your décolletage rather than your face. SHUN THE SUN Stay out of the rays before the wedding, but if you do require a sunburn rescue remedy apply aloe vera for soothing, Pure Vitamin E for healing and green-toned foundation to correct any redness. TONE DOWN THE TAN If you want to look slightly bronzed and beautiful, exfoliate your skin then book in for a light spray tan. But beware of over tanned orange! Have a practice run to check the resulting tone looks natural against the shade of your gown. PUFFY EYED DISGUISE Splash iced water on your face, lie down for 30 mins with teabags or cucumber slices over your eyelids or rest with a frozen eye mask to reduce puffiness. To disguise dark shadows, use a yellow-toned concealer. WAX WISELY If you plan to wax legs, underarm, bikini, lip or brows, don’t do it the day before the wedding. Sod’s law says you are bound to have a reaction, so allow at least a week for any irritation or redness to subside.

MISTAKE 3: EXTENDING LAST MINUTE INVITATIONS

Draw up your guest list carefully and then stick to it. don’t keep adding names to please those who want to invite themselves or have ideas different to yours. Be prepared to respond gently but firmly to that single friend who told you she’d be coming unaccompanied but who now would love to bring her last minute love interest. and, make a stand when guests wish to bring children or family feel you just must ask aunty Mary who lives down country and hasn’t seen since you were in a high chair. if it is beyond your budget, don’t budge!

MISTAKE 4: SPENDING EXORBITANTLY OR STINGILY

Your wedding doesn’t have to be grandiose to be memorable. Some expenses can be cut. For example, ask friends to help with decorating so you can spend a bit more on your dream dress. But remember, your dress is for one day only. Yes, you must love it, but not to the extent you will be in debt for years. That may apply to other items too – don’t let your heart rule your financial head. You can be reasonable without being cheap. On the other hand, your wedding is likely to be a once in a lifetime event, and too much money-pinching could result in a plain or boring day. List items in order of importance, spend a little more on those your really value, and less on those you don’t.

SUPER NATURAL Apply make up in natural light to ensure it doesn’t look heavy, streaky or “caked on.” Choose light reflecting products for a fresh look and remember “less is more,” especially for outdoor and daytime weddings. TWO TONE Use 2 lipsticks on your wedding day- a fresh lighter colour for the ceremony and a similar but darker tone for your evening reception. MESSY MASCARA Tears, rain and perspiration can play havoc with mascara, so use one that is water proof and won’t run if you get a little emotional! TOUCH UP Have your mother or attendants ensure there’s a mini make-up kit on hand for touch ups to lips, eyes and face during the reception. Other useful items include tissues, a nail file, deodorant, perfume and breath freshener. goal in marriage is not to think alike, Y The Y but to think together. – Robert C Dodds

Vintage vehicle hire & group travel East Yorkshire Coaches, ideal for any special occasion.

1. Not doing a ‘morning of the wedding’ gift swap It’s the cutest way to connect with each other without actually being together and whatever gifts you give are sure to be treasured. Tears guaranteed! 2. Not having ‘the chat’ with your photographer
You know, the one where you fill them in on all the photos you definitely want taking. If you specifically want a photo with great aunt Edna or your school friends make sure they know about it.

4. Not adding personal touches
Some of the coolest weddings we’ve been to are ones where the bride and groom have filled their day with unique touches. Think cute personalised vows, quirky readings and imaginative DIY touches. It’s the easiest way to make your wedding day all about the two of you. 5. Not indulging yourself with a luxurious beauty treatment
OK, so this is the one time you can totally justify that pricey facial, tan or pedicure. It is a bride’s prerogative to treat herself don’t you know! 6. Not getting ready with your bridal party
You know how much fun it is getting ready with your girlfriends before a big night out? Well times that by 1,000 and you’re not even close to how amazing it is to spend the morning of your wedding with your gorgeous bridesmaids. Best fun ever! 7. Not keeping an eye on the time when getting ready
Sounds like the most obvious thing, yes? But believe us, in the chaotic excitement of getting ready it’s easy to lose track of time Ask one of your bridesmaids to be chief timekeeper to make sure everything runs smoothly.

If you’ve got your heart set on making a speech, but are worried about the nerves taking over or guests getting restless, relax! Everyone is there because they love you, and chances are your speech will be one of the highlights of the day. You go girl! 9. Not taking 10 minutes alone with your groom
Your wedding day is going to be a blur of fun – but make sure you put aside a few minutes just with your new Mr, to reflect on just how awesome it is to be married! 10. Not choosing the bridesmaids you really want
When it comes to picking the girls you want by your side, don’t compromise. You don’t have to pick your old friend just because she picked you, or your little cousin because she’s never been a bridesmaid. Make sure you go with your heart on this one.

3. Not having a videographer
It flies by so quickly that being able to re-watch the special moments from your day is priceless. If your budget won’t stretch, ask a friend to film the ceremony and speeches instead.

HULL REAL ALE & CIDER FESTIVAL 2016 Hull and East Yorkshire branch of CAMRA are pleased to confirm that this years Hull Real Ale and Cider Festival will be held 14th to 16th April 2016 at Holy Trinity Church in Hull’s Old Town. We are delighted to be able to return to this popular and special venue and work again with our friends at the church to make the festival as popular as ever. The beers will cater for all tastes and preferences with beer being sold using handpumps or gravity dispense according to strength and in lined glasses to ensure a full measure for every drink.

gaining entrance to the event should not be experienced. We are aware of course of the works being done to many areas of the town centre, the immediate area around Holy Trinity is no exception and we are making every effort to minimise disruption. We hope that our loyal customers and new ones will support not only ourselves during the event but also the other businesses in the Old Town as we look forward to enjoying the improvements being made in the future.

We will be sourcing 130 different real ales; around 30 real ciders and a selection of bottled beers from around the world. The real ales will be sourced from local brewers in the Hull and East Yorkshire area who are supporting the event and a further wider selection from Yorkshire and the North East. We are also delighted to be giving at least two new brewers their debut at the event which will help introduce their brews to the wider public. We also hope to join with local food producers to provide our customers with light meals and snacks during the event. We have made a number of changes to avoid the disappointment visitors may have experienced at previous years’ festivals, by increasing the numbers we can have inside the church, so that delays in

The Revd Canon Dr Neal Barnes has stated; ” The CAMRA Real Ale and Cider Festival is one of the highlights of the Holy Trinity calendar. It always amazes me that it draws people from such a wide area, including coach trips from other cities. This is a mark of the esteem in which the event is held. The sense of community and goodwill is always very strong, and Irene, Matt (pictured left) and I thoroughly enjoy mingling with the happy throng as we enjoy a drink of something tasty and good conversation.” For further information about the festival or Hull C.A.M.R.A. please email: press@hullcamra.org.uk Further information also available from www.hullcamra.org.uk

Weight Loss Resources 2012

Are you thinking of going on another diet to manage your weight? Then think again! The truth is if you want to lose weight permanently (see above quote) then you clearly you don’t need a diet you need a plan, or more specifically you need your own personal weight loss plan. To start your plan there are 3 main questions to do at the start of your weight loss journey; Amount, When and Why. A report recently published by ‘Psychology Today’ has found only those who had a Personal Identified Intrinsic Motivation, in other words a clear vision and a burning desire to succeed actually went on not only to reach their weight loss goals but maintain the weight loss.

Unless you have a really vain personality, then just wanting to ‘look better’ means you will usually fail, because you simply worrying what your figure ‘looks like’ to others might ironically be preventing you succeeding at weight loss. In next month’s article I will discuss the next stage of your plan, the How. Tourism

Tourism industry to receive 2017 update Frontline staff working in Hull and East Riding’s visitor industry are to receive an update on plans for 2017 and how the city is getting ready to host the year-long celebration.

Visit Hull and East Yorkshire (VHEY) are hosting the update where Hull 2017’s Director of Marketing, Communities & Legacy Phil Batty will be joining Hull City Council’s City Major Projects Manager, Garry Taylor, to give a briefing on how plans are progressing for Hull’s year in the spotlight and the progression of the multi-million pound investment into the city centre. VHEY will also be outlining the projects they have been working on ahead of 2017.

Destination Hull: New-look city centre starts to become a reality After work to transform the city centre started in October last year, the first pieces of the new paving in this multi-million pound project will now start to be laid in the city centre. Following extensive underground investigation work that have ensured that cabling and pipework have been installed to a high standard and new levels are set; visitors to the city centre will now start to see new high-quality sandstone set in Whitefriargate. Councillor Martin Mancey, Portfolio Holder with responsibility for public infrastructure, said:

Everyone involved in the tourism industry; from hotel receptionists to restaurant waiters, bar staff and taxi drivers have been invited to these sessions that, it is hoped will bring them up-to-date with Hull’s future plans, enabling them to spread the word that the city is on the up.

The hourly sessions will take place tomorrow (Wednesday 3 February) at 9.30am, 11.30am and 4.30pm and attendees have pre-registered their space.

“With the next stage of the work now starting, visitors to the city centre will begin to see what the upheaval has all been about. We have invested in materials that are of incredibly high quality with solid foundations that are designed to last, and this will be obvious for all to see once large areas are completed.

Councillor Steven Bayes, Portfolio Holder for Visitor Destination said:

“These sessions are an opportunity for people working in frontline customer services to get an update on where the city is heading and what we have in store for 2017 and beyond.” “The people working in this industry are incredibly important messengers for us and we want to ensure we are all singing from the same hymn sheet.”

“I’m very much looking forward to welcoming everyone to these sessions and hope they will prove useful”.

Attendees will also have the opportunity to find out more about the new ‘welcome training courses’, designed to help front line staff feel more confident and knowledgeable when speaking to visitors. Organised and developed by VHEY, The courses will launch in April and provide people with ‘customer care’ and ‘product knowledge’ modules, giving them the knowledge they need to ‘sell Hull’ to their customers.

East Yorkshire Coaches

“What we need to remember is that a project of a scale has not been undertaken in the city for many years and, with an incredibly tight schedule to keep to, unfortunately it does mean some disruption. “We would like to thanks residents and especially the businesses in the city centre for their patience and support during this time. It is clear that they too share the Council’s vision for the city centre and know that on completion, they will be the ones to reap the benefits of this massive investment.” With areas soon starting to move into the completion phase, the city centre will now see more areas start the process of excavations before new materials are laid. Councillor Mancey added: “It’s important that visitors to the city centre remember that Hull is well and truly open for business and this development work should not dissuade people from travelling in and shopping. “Our contractors, Eurovia, are working hard to ensure that this work is phased, retaining access to all businesses and residential property at all times.”

Travel

Greece,

not just beaches...

Just 4 hours flight away and always looked upon as a summer only destination. The islands are at there very best when the sun is shining, so not great places to be in inclement weather as many are a beach destination! The majority of summer visitors go for the wonderful beaches with sightseeing secondary on the “to do list”. Islands such as Santorini, Crete & Rhodes have interesting places but for example, Ios, Paros, Zante, Skiathos are 99% beach but very nice islands. During the summer months the mainland and islands offer fabulous options for families, couples, singles & island hopping holidays. I have enjoyed many myself swimming in the clear waters and enjoying wonderful meals in authentic Greek Taverna’s. There are many options when it comes to accommodation with something to suit every budget and taste including all inclusive options. Island hopping was always something linked to back packers and many still do take this option, but you may wish to island hop but with a bit more luxury? Then how about your own boat with a skipper & cook allowing you to put down anchor where and when you wish? Or join many of the various ships that sail each week from the port of Piraeus on the outskirts of Athens? Cruise ships of all sizes sail from the main commercial harbour offering itineraries from 7 nights upwards. One of my favourite that I can highly recommend are Regent 7 Sea’s, ideal for couples taking in several islands. Everything included you can leave your purse behind & enjoy a luxurious holiday. What about something a little different, how about a Motor sailer? With just 49 guests, resembling a pirate ship you can sail aboard Galileo around the Greek Islands from the pretty Zea Marina of Piraeus visiting a selection of islands for a week throughout the summer months. The winter sees the islands with few guests and you very rarely see Greece advertised in a winter holiday brochure. Therefore you may well be surprised that the temperatures in the winter months are pleasant and this time of the year offers a great opportunity to visit the ancient sights in comfort and Greece has more than her fair share of these to offer. During the Autumn Galileo offers something very different. Sailing around the Peloponnese Peninsula visiting the ancient sights. This is a superb week & includes a programme of lectures on board to allow you to make the most of the sights included in your cruise. The finale of the itinerary is sailing through the Corinth Canal - something many have a wish to do in their lifetime. The building of this canal saved a round trip of over 300 miles when it was constructed. A time when such large ships were never imagined hence now only the smaller ships can squeeze through this narrow transit. How things change as the years go by! If you have not been to Athens this is a great city break too. Lynne & I visited last October to inspect ships & Athens & it was superb. Life is all about wonderful memories, let us help you create your travel memories this year. For any holidays or more information on the above we look forward to hearing from you. Marion

half hours. No special equipment is needed, so Reiki can be given anywhere at any time.

What’s it all about?

Reiki is a form of ‘hands on’ healing which originated in Japan. The word Reiki comes from the Japanese word Rei which means ‘Universal Life’ and Ki which means ‘Energy’. This system of natural healing was developed by Dr Mikao Usui after many years of study, research and meditation. It is still taught today by Reiki Masters who have trained in the tradition passed down from Master to student. Reiki is not affiliated with any particular religion or religious practice.

Tell me more!

Reiki is the ‘life energy’ that flows through all living things. It is believed that a person’s ‘ki’ or energy should be strong and flowing freely. When this is the case an individual’s mind and body is in a positive, balanced state of health. When the energy becomes weak or blocked it may lead to symptoms of physical or emotional imbalance. It is believed that a Reiki session can help to soothe stress and tension whilst supporting the body’s ability to heal itself.

What does a treatment involve?

The recipient lies on a couch or sits on a chair. The practitioner then gently places their hands in a sequence of positions which cover the whole body. The person as a whole is treated, rather than focusing on specific symptoms. A full treatment usually takes between one and one and a

Time to up your intake? Cherries found to cut New research has suggested that we need to up our gout risk ‘five-a-day’ of fruit and veg to seven portions in order to be happier and healthier. The study, which was carried out at Warwick University’s Dept. of Economics, analysed data from 80,000 Britons, which included questions on their diet and general feelings. Each individual was given a score between 0 and 10 based on their level of happiness with life. The results showed that those who ate seven to eight portions of fruit and vegetables a day had an average score that was one point higher than those who did not eat any. The researchers have suggested that this could be due to the high levels of antioxidants in fruit and vegetables, which protect the body from stress.

According to new research, eating cherries can reduce the risk of gout attacks by a third. This painful condition is a form of arthritis caused by the over-production of uric acid in the body, and is thought to be the result of overindulging in alcohol or red meat. The acid forms crystals in the blood which are then lodged in the body, typically in the big toe. The study, which was reported in the journal Arthritis and Rheumatism, focused on 633 individuals with gout over the space of a year. The researchers, from Boston University in the US, found that patients who ate up to three servings of fresh cherries or who ate cherry extract were 35% less at risk than those who ate none. A serving was defined as one half-cupful, or 10 to 12 cherries. Furthermore, when cherry consumption was combined with the drug allopurinol, which lowers levels of uric acid, gout attacks were reduced by 75% compared with having no exposure to either the drug or the cherries. The effectiveness of cherries on the condition is thought to be due to the fact that they contain anthocyanins, antioxidants with anti-inflammatory properties.

Eat your way to winter wellness As we head into the last winter month and spring looms, many of us will still succumb to the inevitable barrage of bugs and so will find ourselves reaching for the cold and flu remedies. In addition to the many pharmaceutical products that are used to treat the symptoms of colds and flu many of us will want natural products that can boost our energy levels and support immunity. There are many foods that you can eat to give your immune system a boost. First line choices include foods such as citrus fruits, strawberries, tomatoes, red peppers, broccoli and sweet potatoes which are all high in vitamin C. Foods that are rich in antioxidants are also beneficial. These would include the superfruit berries such as acai, gogi or elderberry so try adding these to a smoothie.

Include plenty of winter greens as they contain important minerals such as selenium, kale, cabbage, Brussel sprouts and collard greens are all great and will also help support the thymus gland that is responsible for immunity.

British Rally Championship The MSA British Rally Championship (BRC) will return to terrestrial TV screens this year after concluding a deal with Channel 4 to cover the sevenround series. The country’s premier rally championship, which begins in March, will also be shown on BT Sport as part of a new broadcast package that will ensure that the high octane action reaches as many fans as possible. The BRC returns in 2016 with a new promoter, new classes, a new calendar and a new vision: to provide the ultimate test of the best drivers in the latest cars on some of the most iconic stages in UK rallying. As a result of its worldwide reputation as one of the most competitive championships in the world, drivers from Ireland, Australia, Finland, Norway, Sweden and Italy are expected to do battle with the UK’s best rally talent, including M-Sport’s WRC star Elfyn Evans. They will be hoping to add their name

to a prestigious roll of honour that includes some legendary names of the sport, including Vatanen, Clark, Mikkola, McRae and Burns. Produced by Hayfisher Productions, each BRC round will enjoy a half- hour slot on Channel 4 as part of the channel’s weekend morning sports programming, with a repeat of the action later in the week. BT Sport viewers will enjoy a longer 60-minute programme, providing an opportunity to expand on some of the great stories that will develop in the course of the season, including the battle for the DMACK Junior BRC title that will catapult one young driver into international competition in 2017. The revamped series will take in seven events across the British Isles as it tours England, Northern Ireland, Wales and Scotland before culminating on the the iconic lanes of the Isle of Man.

Feb/March Gardener General tasks and garden maintenance

Continue to dig over existing beds and borders, again incorporating as much organic matter as you can. Forking over not only helps prepare the soil for spring, it helps reduce pests by exposing them to hungry birds. Although temperatures should start to rise this month, there is still a risk of frost and even snow. Protect vulnerable plants, pots and taps from frost by wrapping insulation such as garden fleece around them and check pots and containers are raised off the ground if possible. Tender trees and shrubs will thank you for a generous application of dry mulch to protect their roots from freezing conditions. Once the ground isn’t frozen, make new beds and borders - mark the shape with sand trickled from a bottle, remove the top layer of growing vegetation and dig the ground over, incorporating as much organic matter as possible. If you are making a bed in the lawn, remove the turf and stack it upside down somewhere out of the way - after a year or two it will rot down into fantastic compost. Alternatively chop it up and bury upside down in the planting hole a good spade’s depth down. Beware - if you just dig it in the buried grass will regrow and regrow and regrow and... Remember not to let leaves accumulate around alpines - they will die if left damp for long. Cover bare patches around clumps with gritty compost to encourage regrowth.

When the weather allows, carry on clearing paths, check walls (but avoid concreting until there is no chance of frost), clean and insulate greenhouses and ensure heaters are working properly. Even a little insulation will make a huge difference to your heating bill. Clean and repair your garden tools, book the lawn mower in for a service and check garden furniture for any rot. When it is warm enough, treat sheds, fences and trellis with wood preservative; brushes and rollers are fine for most things, however a sprayer is well worth buying for tricky projects such as woven panels!

Lawns

Keep off the lawn as much as possible whilst it is still wet - damage to waterlogged lawns is easily inflicted. If, towards the end of the month, the weather turns dry and mild, the lawn is firm and the grass is starting to look a little shaggy, give it a very gentle mow with the blades on the highest setting - don’t be tempted if conditions are wet! Also, if you are planning a new lawn, now is probably the earliest you could start preparing the ground for seeding or laying turf. Ask for advice in your local garden centre if you are unsure as to how to begin!

Birds

It’s another lean month for wildlife and especially birds. Putting out fresh water and food is really important, especially on cold days. You’ve heard it all before, but please do buy good quality bird food or fat/suet balls and check that water is not frozen.

Chuba Akbon have scored hatricks within the past month, no-one left during the transfer window and we have also had a 16 year Hull lad make an FA Cup appearance. One massive plus to this month has also been the return to fitness of Robert Snodgrass. Not only are we beginning to see some of the qualities of a £7 Million winger but the right flank beginning to function. Elmo has been poor most of the season and his partnership with Odubajo hasn’t worked. They both want to do the same things and maybe one was actually bought to replace the other in August?. However leftfooted Snodgrass (top right) tends to cut in from the wing whilst Odubajo can overlap to his hearts content. He terrorised Charlton during the 6-0 victory and won the penalty at Fulham from his burst into the box. Snodgrass is also putting in some excellent corners and free kicks and it is only a matter of time until Harry Maguire (above)or Michael Dawson start to head some home. Harry Maguire has also been one of the star performers over the month. He

has to wait a year for his breakthrough into the team but he is looking at home in the centre of defence. He seemed cumbersome at first but few get past him and have we ever had a central defender so comfortable with the ball at his feet. If we can pick up imagine the club were anticipating points from most of these and remain at least 3-4,000 per match on top of in an automatic spot then promotion season ticket holders.. There are two obvious problems with this plan. How is on the cards. There is still a long way to go and six teams look likely to be many people can afford £25-£30 for a Championship game and they have fighting for two spots till the end of changed the ticketing arrangements so April, City, Boro, Burnley, Brighton , you cannot pay on the gate. There are also continued rumours of a takeover by a Chinese or American consortium. This would be unlikely to occur before promotion is sealed as the massive Sky riches will be a big incentive to potential owners. Maybe just maybe they could get their hands on the stadium too if they can convince the council of their trustworthiness. The

Well we didn’t expect to be back at top of the Championship at mid February. Some awful away performances at Leeds, Rotherham and Preston in December was raising unrest amongst fans as we fell well behind both Middlesborough and Derby County. However January brought six consecutive victories in both league and FA Cup, a position at top of the league once again plus a 5th round Cup appearance at Arsenal.

FIONA’S FOOD FOR THOUGHT By Fiona Dwyer, broadcast journalist, PR & media consultant, slave to 2 children and a husband.

FED UP OF PHISHING? I don’t know about you but I am really fed up with phishing emails. You know the ones I’m talking about. Emails with invoices attached claiming I owe hundreds and sometimes thousands of pounds for products I haven’t bought! Emails telling me thousands of pounds have been deposited into my bank account and that I should open the attachment for details! (Clearly you must never do this because they probably contain a virus.) I’m even getting emails from abroad from people asking me to be to be their friend. Do they (the hackers behind the phishing) really think I’m so stupid as to not realize that all their messages are identical, they’ve just signed off with a different name?! And I’m getting emails about things that, quite frankly, are a bit shocking! I will say no more! Except, perhaps, to say that these phishers need to find alternative bait – or better still hang up their rods for good!

Well if you don’t, I do! I looked back at my New Year’s resolutions from last year and one of them was to get to bed at least before midnight, but preferably by 10.30pm. Yes, you guessed it, I failed quite often - and I’m still failing! But my motto is to never give up, so here’s to more sleep from now on and fewer woolly head moments!

LOVE IS IN THE AIR…… Or is it? Yes it’s that time of year again when red roses, champagne, chocolates and romantic dinners will be bought and booked for that one special day of the year – Valentine’s Day! Of course, if you are a regular reader of my column, you will know that I am under no illusions of any of the above. “I can tell you I love you on any day of the year! It’s just an excuse for companies to inflate their prices and make more money,” says my husband.” Sadly, I don’t necessarily disagree with him. But I am a romantic at heart and although I can do without the roses and champagne, I wouldn’t say “No!” to chocolate! What? I’m just saying!!!!!
