Welcome & Contents
Hello Readers,
Welcome to the March/April edition of HULLMAG. Well I am hoping that Spring is finally here and we don’t have any weather surprises in store/ It would be nice if we could have some early sun and warmth as we come up to the Easter holidays. If you are at a loss for things to do with the children the Edwardian Easter in Hull looks like the place to visit, you can read all about it on page eight. I know that I shall be taking the grandchildren down for the day. We have some great tickets to be won in our free to enter competition. The Harlem Globetrotters are at Sheffield Areana and they have donated tickets - so get your details on a postcard - you never know it could be you that wins.
8 Hull Edwardian Easter
All you keen gardeners will finally be able to get out into the fresh air and start planting and propagating this Easter - so please have a look at the Gardening Advice on page 16 and we also have some advice for keeping your trees healthy if you are lucky enough to have them in your garden. Unfortunately my garden is the size of a postage stamp so I only have a few containers with plants in. Hull City have let things slip a bit over recent weeks but I am sure the lads will get it back on track and give us all a nail-biting end to the season as they still contend for that spot back in the Premiership.

Gardening Advice
If you are planning a holiday this year you should read Marion Owens Travel article on page fifteen. She puts the spotlight on rail holidays and I am sure that they will get us all considering them as an alternative to the annual trip to Spain or many of the other regular destinations. I think if my dudget would allow I would be up for a trip through the Rockies or even somewhere like Vietnam by train. All that remains for me to say is Have a great Easter (don’t over do the chocolate eggs!!) stay safe, enjoy the magazine and we will be back with you in mid April.

Visiting Your Vet Each month, vet Dr. David Robinson from the Kingston Veterinary Group will be giving advice about looking after your pets. In this month’s Pets Page he talks about visiting the vets. A visit to the vets can often be a stressful experience for your pet. There are lots of unfamiliar sights, sounds, smells and, of course, other animals to contend with. However there are things that you can do to turn the visit into a more positive experience. Get your pet used to you touching it in the same way as the vet would. Get him familiar with having his tail lifted, his feet and nails touched, his eyes, ears and mouth checked, his tummy felt, and to being lifted up and moved around. Give him a treat whilst you do this so it becomes a positive experience. The familiarity with handling will help to ease your pet’s tension and make it much easier for you and the vet to look for health problems and to administer medication. Once at the vets do not let your pet wander around freely. Remember, there will be other pets in the reception area and things can quickly get out of control if pets confront one another.
It is also important for the pet’s owner to try to remain calm. Depending on the reason for the visit, the owner may be fearful or anxious. Pets pick up on these emotions easily and will react by also becoming stressed. When booking your appointment it is helpful to give the vet’s receptionist a brief outline of your pet’s problem. They will be able to advise you on matters such as whether you need to bring a urine or stool sample or not to feed your pet ahead of the appointment if blood tests need to be taken. If something is worrying you about your pet’s health, keep notes or take a photograph, if appropriate, to record things that you notice and the duration of the problem. Do not be afraid to ask your vet any questions if you do not understand something or if you have any concerns relating to your pet’s health – your vet is there to help and to offer advice. Annual health checks with booster vaccinations are important for your pet’s health. They also give the vet and your pet the opportunity to get to know each other and for the vet to examine your pet to detect any problems before they become a serious issue. If you have any queries about your pet’s health you can ask Kingston Veterinary Group for advice. Contact us on 01482 223688 or visit our website www.kingstonvet. co.uk

Council’s registration and celebratory services pilots Home Office scheme East Riding Registration and Celebratory Services have been chosen by the Home Office to take part in a national pilot scheme to trial a joint citizenship and nationality application service. The service is one of just a handful across the country taking part in the initiative which will, for the first time, allow people to submit their passport application at the same time as their citizenship application.
World Record Attempt by Hull Homeless Outreach Hull Homeless Outreach are running a campaign to raise awareness of the Homeless Issue in Hull and Surrounding Areas. They are looking for people to donate unwanted shoes (any size, style and condition) between now and the end of May 2016. Donated shoes will then be used in a Guinness Book of World Record attempt at the KC Stadium on the 25th June 2016. The current record for a continuous line of shoes is 24,962 which the group is hoping to smash!
Currently, once a citizenship application has been submitted and a citizenship ceremony has taken place, a separate application has to be made for a British passport which can take up to six weeks to process. Under this new initiative, a passport application can be made at the same time as the citizenship application and if the application is successful then the passport will be sent out around 20 days after confirmation the new citizen has attended a citizenship ceremony. Patricia Mann, MBE, superintendent registrar, said: “The fact that we are only one of a few districts chosen to pilot this service is recognition of the quality of the nationality checking service provided by this council.” The joint citizenship and nationality application service is available at the registration centres in Goole, Cottingham and Beverley. For more information, or to book an appointment contact the citizenship office on (01482) 393590 or you can can contact us by email citizenship@eastriding.gov.uk
PLEASE DONATE YOUR OLD SHOES Donated shoes will be reused after the event by either being used as stock for this and other homeless charities in the area, donated to other relevant charities, some will go to support refugee’s in Northern France and any that are of no use will be “weighed in” to be recycled with funds from those going to charities too. The group have received great support from GoStore, a local company providing free storage before the event and Smedley and Son Hauliers providing logistical support. Many local schools and businesses have been involved so far with the current count of shoes sat at 12000 at the time of going to press. There is also some work being done on collecting local celebrity shoes for auctioning after the event. On the day of the event there will be a Family Fun Day including local bands playing outside the KC Stadium. Step back in time at Edwardian Easter Families will be able to step back in time as part of the Edwardian Easter celebrations later this month. The Edwardian Easter Fete and Market, now in its third year, will take place at the Museums Quarter in High Street on Saturday 26 March, 10am - 4pm. Period performers, traditional market stalls, music acts, Helter Skelter, Punch and Judy shows, free craft activities and face painting will entertain the whole family. The free event is being organised by Hull Culture and Leisure’s Heritage Learning team and HullBID, building on the success on previous years, aiming to involve more local businesses in this hugely popular event. Councillor Terry Geraghty, Hull City Council Cabinet Portfolio Holder for Culture and Leisure and Chair of Hull Culture and Leisure Limited, said: “Due to its success in previous years welcoming over 10,000 people, we are delighted to again offer an action packed day. It is becoming an established event in the city’s calendar.
“The partnership with HullBID and local businesses is helping the event to grow each year and we are hoping this year will be bigger and better. The whole area will be transformed back to the start of the twentieth century and is expected to be a fantastic day.” Kathryn Shillito, City Centre Manager for HullBID, said: “We are delighted to be collaborating once again with Heritage Learning on the Edwardian Easter event. “HullBID provides funding to ensure there is a wide-range of activities for all the family and this, paired with the excellent educational provision, makes it such a success. Our member businesses in the old town look forward to increased footfall and the benefits this brings.” Families are encouraged to dressup in Edwardian attire, bringing Easter excitement to the day, and also take part in the creative Easter bonnet competition. A chance to win some exciting prizes! In addition to all the fun activities and entertainment, there will be lots of Edwardian style transport with horse and carriage rides, the land train and a vintage EYMS bus transporting visitors across the city. Admission to the event is free. For more information visit www.hcandl.co.uk

Destination Hull: Major city centre projects given the green light Plans for a state-of-the-art 3,500-seater music and events centre and the redevelopment of Hull’s historic Beverley Gate have today been given the go-ahead by councillors. Hull City Council’s Planning Committee have approved plans for the ‘Hull Venue’ which, it is hoped, will put Hull on the UK map as a location for major events, shows and music concerts. The plans approved today include the building of the new centre, alongside the cladding of Osborne Street carpark and additional public spaces in a currently derelict area on Myton Street behind Princes Quay. The centre will include a 3,500 capacity concert auditorium with the flexibility to reduce to a 2,500 all-seated event and a 2,000m2 exhibition space plus 800 capacity conference auditorium. It is also predicted that the scheme will deliver 30 full time jobs with 100 – 150 temporary jobs on event days. Councillor Steven Bayes, Portfolio Holder for Visitor Destination said: “The approval of this scheme is key to making Hull a top visitor destination and to securing a long-term legacy from our year as UK City of Culture. “We will formally hand over the City of Culture title to another city in 2020, but this development will allow us to continue to attract events capable of delivering a big economic impact beyond that. “Importantly, it will deliver a large number long-term jobs for
our local workforce and young people, which is part of the legacy that we want to deliver for Hull and the city.” The council has committed £36.2m towards the cost of building the complex on the site behind Princes Quay shopping centre and this investment will also modernise Osborne Street carpark. Situated close to the key road and rail routes in and out of Hull, the new Hull Venue will revitalise and reconnect the heart of the city centre by providing a link between the historic Old Town, the 1950s-built ‘new town’ and the city’s transport interchange and St. Stephen’s shopping centre. The aim is to provide an iconic landmark for visitors travelling to and through the city, as well as offering conference delegates and gig-goers spectacular views of Hull Marina. Work will now begin later this year, following BAM Construction’s appointment in December. The Venue is scheduled to open in 2018 as part of the city’s legacy programme. Plans for the redevelopment of Beverley Gate have today also been approved by planning councillors, meaning that the work is one step closer to beginning. With its new Scheduled Monument status, an application will now be made to the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport, in consultation with Historic England, to be assessed and approved. Plans will see walls exposed and current access retained and improved. Changes to the point of entry and a lighter solution to safety railings will create a more attractive space, where people can sit closer at a higher level. Councillor Bayes added: “We always wanted to properly acknowledge the historical significance of Beverley Gate and to enhance its representation and public awareness. “I believe these plans successfully do this and the end result will be something the city can be proud of”.

Serving up new consultation for tennis courts
Dog owners reminded about micro-chipping legislation
Consultation with residents, sport clubs and service users on proposals for a new tennis court facility at the city’s Costello Playing Fields has started.
New legislation comes into force in April that will require all dogs to be micro-chipped and registered to an approved database when they are eightweeks old. The legislation starts on 6, April, 2016 and is designed to help East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s dog wardens, as well as vets, reunite lost pets with their owners.
Hull Culture and Leisure, in partnership with the Lawn Tennis Association and with support from the West Area Committee, are developing plans for a four court floodlit tennis facility on Costello Playing Fields, west Hull, subject to the approval of the final application to the Community Tennis Fund. Councillor Terry Geraghty, Hull City Council Cabinet Portfolio Holder for Culture and Leisure and Chair of Hull Culture and Leisure Limited, said: “We have been working closely with the Lawn Tennis Association on ways to improve access to the sport, increase participation levels and secure finance to ensure our proposals for new tennis courts will be utilised to its full potential going forward.
Over the last seven years, the number of dogs that have been micro-chipped in the East Riding has shown a small but steady rise from around 23 per cent to 31 per cent in 2015. Micro-chipping is carried out by vets and there are no exemptions from a dog being chipped unless the vet says it cannot be done for health reasons, in which case a certificate will be issued. For those owners whose dogs are already chipped, they need to make sure their contact details, including a current telephone number, are kept up-to-date. Owners are also reminded that the wearing of a collar and tag is still the law and should continue to be worn, even when the dog has been micro-chipped.
“We would like community members, sports clubs and residents to provide their views into our plans for the new facility, so that we can develop a tennis facility that meets the needs of all our residents who wishes to play tennis in west Hull.” People have until Sunday 8 May to give their thoughts on the outlined proposals via online consultation at the following: www.hullcc.gov.uk/consultations
Councillor Shaun Horton, portfolio holder for community involvement and local partnerships at East Riding of Yorkshire Council, said: “The council’s dog warden team has a very good record of reuniting stray dogs with their owners but this change in the law should make it a lot easier.”

Travel on the rails... A growing way to travel, they say things go full circle! We often tailor make European rail holidays via P&O North sea ferries. Trains display numbers on the continent which makes it easier in foreign parts where you perhaps do not speak the language. You do feel a sense of adventure arriving in unknown territory with just your hotel address and directions from the train station! Interrail passes are cheap and allow you to roam the continent. You purchase the pass for days rather than distance, they are very popular with younger travellers who are prepared to arrive on speck and find a bed although it can be semi or fully pre booked. Perhaps you would prefer an escorted tour on the rails and let someone else do the organising for you? Don’t want to carry your luggage? Then it can be couriered ahead to be waiting on arrival at your hotel, prices start from £85. Another worry is getting to London to join these tours, well for £99 you can travel from Hull and stay overnight to ensure that you have a stress free start to your holiday. Meeting your guide at St Pancreas you can sit back and relax, the choice of tours are immense you can travel to Corsica, Morocco as well as many places not so far for example Austria, France, Germany, Italy & Switzerland. Is the Orient Express on your wish list? The normal one way fare from London to Venice is around £3000 per person but we have an offer at the moment from £2399. This includes the iconic rail journey plus a 3 night stay in Venice & a flight back to the UK. Further afield incorporating flying, Canada is a popular place for rail travel. It is a long journey from the East to West of this vast country but you can enjoy shorter sections in stunning scenery. The Rocky Mountaineer offers a wonderful journey in a Gold Class dome carriage but if it is beyond your reach we have cheaper options available offering a very similar experience. South Africa offers two special services the Rovos Train or the Blue Train which can be combined for example with Safaris, Winelands, Victoria Falls, Cities, golf etc, there are many combinations that can be offered to you. Many countries have an iconic journey to offer you, the Ghan in Australia, 4 days on the tracks through the centre of the country! Gardening
March/April Gardener General tasks and garden maintenance
Frosts can still be a hazard, so keep vulnerable plants protected at night if frost is forecast. March winds are also notorious for their ferocity so check exposed plants are well supported. Now is the time for a thorough spring clean; weed and dig over your borders incorporating as much organic matter as you can - those chilly winds will really help to dry out the soil. Mulch bare soil once you have done the work and remove moss and weeds from paths, terraces and driveways. They may be boring tasks but if you don’t get on top of the garden now (especially the weeds!) it will be a nightmare for the rest of the season. Make new beds and borders - mark the shape with sand trickled from a bottle, remove the top layer of growing vegetation and dig the ground over, incorporating as much organic matter as possible. If you are making a bed in the lawn, remove the turf and stack it upside down somewhere out of the way - after a year or two it will rot down into fantastic compost. Alternatively chop it up and bury upside down in the planting hole a good spade’s depth down. Beware - if you just dig it in the buried grass will regrow and regrow and regrow and... Clean and repair your garden tools, book the lawn mower in for a service and check garden furniture for any rot. When it is warm enough, treat sheds, fences and trellis with wood preservative; brushes and rollers are fine for most things, however a sprayer is well worth buying for tricky projects such as woven panels!
placing stored tubers in moist, multi-purpose compost. Keep them at around 18 degrees and remember, begonia tubers go hollow side uppermost. Sow hardy annuals such as calendula, cornflower and annual poppies in drifts – clashing colours just don’t matter in a garden, but remember to plant taller plants behind shorter ones. Sow sweet peas outdoors (soak the seeds overnight to improve germination) and plant out those raised under cover. Autumn sown plants (if you were that efficient) can go out in April; spring sown ones in May. Prepare the soil where they are to be planted by digging a trench and adding a layer of well-rotted manure or garden compost at the bottom. Our dear horticultural expert points out quite rightly, that this should have been done in the autumn, but now is better than never! Split perennials such as Michaelmas daisies and leucanthemums can be pulled apart. Replant the outer portions and jettison the hard middle bits. Remarkably, they respond very well to such brutal bullying and will prove rejuvenated and reinvigorated! Brighten up your pots and containers with tete-a-tete, pansies, violas, primroses, cyclamen and spring heathers. A stunning combination is tete-a-tete surrounded by pink and yellow primroses and variegated ivy - or try pansies densely packed for a striking display of colour. Plant flowering spring bulbs and primroses in empty gaps - a bit of a cheat, but who cares!
Bulbs, flowers and containers
Remove the top layer of soil from pot-grown shrubs and replace with fresh potting compost that contains a slow-release fertiliser. If the weather really does turn dry, remember pots and containers will need watering, especially if they are near a wall and in a sheltered position.
Plant summer flowering bulbs. Add some compost to the soil, a sprinkling of bonemeal and plant them slightly deeper than they were in the pot.
Trees, shrubs and climbers
Protect new spring shoots from slugs; a generous application of slug killer around hostas now (even if they are not showing) will help in the uneven battle on the horizon!
If you forgot to do the spring bulb thing in the autumn, we have the perfect cheat for you. Fill gaps in borders, containers and rockeries with our Blue Peter-esque “Here’s one I did earlier” version - i.e. top quality, ready-to-go pot grown bulbs. Ideal for keeping the colour going until the end of May, and glorious when combined with primroses, pansies, violas and polyanthi. Cut down perennials that have been left standing over winter, including grasses - even if they are still looking good. Lift and divide overgrown clumps of perennials and split polyanthus plants once they have finished flowering. On the subject of perennials that will need support in the summer, get ahead of the game so your lovely poppies, peonies and delphiniums will grow through supports, rather than being trussed up conspicuously with canes and string come the moment of near collapse. Hazel or birch twigs are great for the natural look, canes and pea netting are practical and unobtrusive, and purpose made green plastic covered supports are easy and convenient - choices, choices! Looking ahead to summer, buy young plants now for your hanging baskets and containers and pot them up so that the moment the last frost is over, you can plant away with teenage plants rather than toddlers. Galvanise your begonia, dahlia and canna tubers into action by
Please remember to mention
Plant and move evergreen shrubs, conifers and trees and remember to water them well until firmly rooted in. Plant evergreen hedges such as laurel, yew and box and again keep them well watered in dry spells. A good soak once a week is better than superficial watering on a regular basis. Finish pruning your roses and start spraying them with fungicide to ward against black spot and mildew. Repeat every fortnight until the autumn. Remember that if an infection sets in, all the stricken leaves must be burnt - do not leave them on the compost heap as this will become the perfect incubation site. Prune hydrangeas - do not remove stems with a bud at the top, but snip off old stems bearing deadheads to just above the topmost healthy bud and remove weak shoots altogether from the base. With established plants, remove some of the older shoots right down to the base., The latter also applies to forsythia (prune once it has finished flowering by cutting back flowered shoots down to a new shoot further down - all the new growth will flower next year) and to flowering currants (Ribes).

Give Your Tree A Health Check Over the last few years with the changing weather conditions higher temperatures in the summer and floods in the spring. Trees are well and truly under attack. One of the first signs that a tree is under stress can be seen in the spring in many species. As the tree comes into leaf the top growth remains bare and does not produce any spring growth. This condition is called “stag heading, trees tend to leaf from the top down so this symptom is easy to spot as long as you are able to estimate when the tree will come into leaf and visit every morning. During the early summer it is possible to look at the leaf coverage within the trees canopy. Every tree arranges its leaves to catch as much sunlight as possible. By taking photos every year it is possible to check if the canopy in the
tree has reduced its coverage from the previous years. A reducing can be an early sign of deteriorating health. Problems and Solutions Trees have two main problems soil compaction and acid rain. The second is hard for the individual to solve in relation to single trees. However soil compaction is a solvable problem for each tree. Soil compacting - this can be caused by building too near a tree, or by flooding or working the soil whilst it is wet. The problem is that it stops water penetration and also prevents the tree from taking up the available water. Several solutions can be employed which include 1. Using a fork on a small scale in the rooting zone to reduce compaction by pushing the fork into the ground and pulling back to break the soil to loosen the structure. It is important to do this carefully as not to damage the roots. On a larger scale it is possible to use mycorrhizal fungi which will combine with the roots to help the up take of nutrients and moisture 2. Preventing compaction from returning can be achieved by the use of mulches around the tree, which will prevent the effects of heavy rain, which destructure the soil. If you need any help with maintaining the health of your tree please contact our advertisers who specialise in tree care.

Haltemprice Art Group 69 Years And Still Going Strong Established in 1947 by Frank Armstrong and a group of other local artists, the Haltemprice Art Group is one of the longest running art groups in the East Riding. The group meets weekly at Cottingham High School from September to May, during school term time. We have a membership of around fifty, several of whom attend art classes locally and exhibit at the major open exhibitions in the area. The range of ability of our members is comparable to any to be found in the East Riding. Our Annual Exhibition and Sale is held every April, and opens this year with an Evening Preview on Wednesday 13th April at 7.00 pm. Our Adjudicator this year will be well known local artist, Diane Rotherforth. The Exhibition will be opened by the Chairman of East Riding of Yorkshire Council, Councillor Peter Turner. The Exhibition is then open from Thursday to Saturday at 10.00am.
With around 150 framed pieces of work on display, all paintings are original and most are for sale. There is also a selection of unframed paintings, reasonably priced, with mounts included, ready to be framed. This year, we will have another section of paintings entitled “Near and Far”, favourite holiday locations which may trigger happy memories, and a large choice of handmade cards from original paintings. Many of our regular exhibition visitors tell us it is as good as any of the open exhibitions in the area. There is nothing quite like an original painting, by a local artist, to hang in your home. If you enjoy art, our 69th Exhibition will be a real treat. With free entrance, disabled access and easy, free parking nearby, what’s not to like? Local Company, Local Service Several years ago, in the face of increasing competition from direct insurers, the internet and comparison sites, Hedon Insurance made a brave decision. They decided to take insurance ‘local’! They now have four offices around the region and are building a loyal band of happy customers with their commitment to face to face, local service.
Take the short drive to Cottingham for a great deal on your insurance
Paul Welsh, Director, said: “Insurance is a complex area. I cannot imagine why people would want to arrange it themselves and expose themselves to all the risks and pitfalls of not arranging it properly. “By dealing with a local broker you get the benefit of being face to face with someone who is dealing with the subject every day of their lives – someone, who is working for you on your behalf.” There is a perception that you may finish up paying more via a local broker. This tends not be the case however, as a broker’s ‘local’ knowledge can often work in their favour – such as in areas which have either flooded or are regarded to be at a high risk of flooding. He said: “The best way to convince people that we are competitive is for them to give us a try. “In our main markets, we are rarely more than a few pounds away from the best internet quote and often, because of our local knowledge, we can be cheaper. “When you add in the value of dealing with somebody, face to face, locally – and how important that could be in the event of a claim – we believe that a using a broker is great value.”

February looked to be a hard set of fixtures and City didn’t come of these fixtures too badly with only a defeat to Burnley and victories at Blackburn and Ipswich. This should have been so much better if the team could learn to break down defences and improve their shooting skills. Two goalless home games against Brighton and Sheffield Wednesday highlighted a weakness since the beginning of the Bruce era which is a lack of ruthlessness in front of goal. They managed to waste a dozen opportunities within these games and continued this in the 1-0 defeat at Birmingham on 3rd March. The irony of this is the total of 48 goals which made them the divisions top scorers till recently despite many of this seasons victories have been by a one goal margin. We can score a goal and defend the lead but will this continue against packed defences over the coming weeks? Teams have discovered that Hernandez can be marked out of games, he is often our only forward and outnumbered , Diame only comes out to play infrequently and by putting 6-8 people behind the ball there is no space for Hull City to create anything. Something has to change from March onwards. With the defeat against Arsenal the priority is now playing catch-up in the league and taking advantage of the two games in hand they have over Burnley and Brighton and one game in hand over Middlesborough. Twelve games remain with seven winnable games at home and five away including two daunting away fixtures at Boro on March 18th and Derby on April 5th. Ten games are winnable and 30

further points would definitely bring promotion. The question is how many of these games will bring victories? They are more than capable but will they rediscover their shooting boots or make some changes? We have played with one forward and Diame in a supporting role from midfield, when he is in the mood. Could it now be time for Akpom or Powell? Akpom has flattered to decieve despite the very opinion he seems to have of himself but he has not developed a partnership with Hernandez so far this season. Powell was brought in as a forward despite being played in a free role in his games so far. Could he be the man to partner Hernandez? He scored 12 goals in a loan spell at Wigan two years ago so he has the capability now that he is gaining match fitness. The other alternative is Diomande but he has made limited impression so far after waiting 6 months to see him play. One question to ask is why has he not played as an over-age players in the Under 21s? He is not really match fit and has only played games against Arsenal. Why not give him a few games to gain some sharpness and goals in the reserve fixtures before throwing him in at the Emirates? The cupboard is pretty bare for a partner for Hernandez. Two attacking midfielders, an untried and unfit Norwegian, Aluko and Luer who didnt break into Scunthorpe’s side whilst on loan. If things are so tight financially why not loan out Aluko to one of the sides chasing him in January and bring someome else in. There must be some people still out there, dare we even suggest someone within the Crystal Palace reserves? What we really need is a Dean Windass, an experienced striker who can patrol the penalty area and put away one of opportunities currently frittered away. Has Kevin Phillips finally retired or is Adam Le Fondre available?
After the 1-1 draw against Milton Keynes Dons in which Sam Clucas (pictured above) got the goal for us Hull City have remaining home games against Nottingham Forest, Bristol City, Wolves, Leeds United, Brentford and Rotherham. They also have away games at Middlesbrough, Derby, Huddersfield, Reading and Bolton. All games at this stage of the season will become difficult but if Hull City can step up a gear they are capable of winning themajority of these games. The sooner they start to put away some chances the sooner these games till turn to victories. Any more goalless games and the nerves will kick in on and off the pitch. One interesting idea suggested to me this week would be to use our Club Ambassador Dean Windass to be offered an opportunity to become the strikers coach. Let him run some training sessions on the art of goalscoring or composure in front of goal. Don’t snatch at opportunities or blast it just place it.. Somehow I can’t see this happening however . Lets hope Hernandez ends his goal drought, Clucas has restored his confidence and people like Snodgrass can contribute. Middlesborough are not in great form at the moment so a top two position is within our grasp if we can get some wins on the board , use the games in hand and avoid defeat at Boro on March 18th. This will no doubt go down to wire with City, Burnley, Boro and Brighton still contesting the two promotion places till May.
Words by Woody Mellor
Since the last column Hull City have lost their top position to Burnley and we may possibly be in a five club race for second spot as Burnley have built a seven point lead through five consecutive victories.

FIONA’S FOOD FOR THOUGHT By Fiona Dwyer, broadcast journalist, PR & media consultant, slave to 2 children and a husband.
Spring is in the air I love the Spring! It’s time to stop hibernating and to start clearing out the cobwebs, both actual and metaphorical! I love the longer days and love seeing the new leaves and flowers popping up all over the place. Saying that, with the mild winter we’ve had, my daffodils have been utterly confused and started growing back in January! Regardless, it’s a great time of year. It makes me start clearing out all the “stuff” you collect over the last year and getting rid of it – although in my case, I think I currently have a couple of years worth of “stuff” to clear out. It’s the Springtime that invigorates me for the year ahead. Doesn’t it do the same for you? Happy days!

I love the fact that we have to re-use bags for shopping but don’t you hate it when you forget to take them with you? I must have about 20 bags I have bought from various shops but after doing a big supermarket shop and putting everything away, I must confess I don’t always immediately return them to the boot of my car! And that’s what I’m talking about. The next time I go shopping, I am bagless! It’s frustrating and then I start objecting to having to buy another one to add to my ever-increasing collection. Surely I’m not on my own here?

Unpredictable cats
You may remember me telling you how we rescued a couple of kittens last year. Well, those cute little kittens have grown up to be absolutely massive cats – and they aren’t even a year old! Now, we’ve always had cats in our house – and they’ve always quite happily used the cat flap – but for some reason these two simply refuse to do so! I have no idea why. They know where it is and we’ve shown them how to use it, but regardless of that they continue to scratch at the door every time they want to go out or come back in. In fact, they’d rather stay out all night than take it upon themselves to use their own little door. Honestly, half of the time I feel like they have employed me as their own personal door monitor. One of them in particular scratches to come in, has a few mouthfuls of food, then about a minute later scratches to go back out! Let’s just say it can be annoying! So, if any of you have any ideas how to encourage my cats to use the cat flap, please feel free to let me know!
Don’t forget your shopping bag!
