Welcome & Contents
Hello Readers,
Welcome to the April/May edition of HULLMAG. Well I am hoping that Spring is finally here and we don’t have any weather surprises in store/ It would be nice if we could have some early sun and warmth as we come up to the May Day Bank Holiday. If you are at a loss for things to do with the children the Vintage, Retro & Handmade Fair at Beverley Racecourse on 8th May is a great day out. As well as over 70 exhibitors there will be a fun fair, vintage and classic vehicles and much more and it won’t break the bank with admission prices kept low. Hull looks like the place to visit this summer with the fantastic ‘Place des Anges’ spectacular arriving in July.

So please put these dates in your diary and enjoy the events and friendly atmosphere that they create. Of course Cottingham also has plenty to offer as far as shopping, eating out and other recreational activities too. Health & Wellbeing
We have a new sports page in this months magazine as well as the regular Hull City column to keep all you sporty types happy. I’m still not sure if City have the ability to go up as they seem to run hot and cold and seem to be missing an out and out goal scorer that can kill off the opponents with a brace of goals on a regular basis. However, I do wish them well and hope that they can return to the Premier League. Check out the Gardening feature too, where we have a new Yorkshire Garden Festival which is the brainchild of Ian Ashbridge from Heritage Landscape & Garden Centre at Melton. Until next month, take care and enjoy HullMag.

Pets Page
Keeping Pets Safe
Each month, vet Dr. David Robinson from the Kingston Veterinary Group will be giving advice about looking after your pets. In this month’s Pets Page he talks about keeping your pet safe in the garden.
Some plants and flowers, as well as products that we regularly use in the garden, can be extremely toxic to animals. For example, tulips, daffodils, lilies, laburnum, lily of the valley, rhododendron, yew and the castor oil plant are just some of the popular plants and bulbs that are toxic to pets. Even the pollen from lilies can be harmful if it gets onto your pet’s paws and fur and he licks it off. Before buying any new plants for your garden always read the label regarding any potential hazards or ask for advice. Slug and snail pellets contain the chemical metaldehyde, which can be deadly if swallowed. You should only use these products with extreme caution
and ensure that pets are kept away from areas where they are used and stored. Consider using an alternative method of pest control such as a pet-proof slug trap, or chemical free/ organic products. Pets, particularly dogs, can pick up lungworm through contact with slugs and snails. Lungworm is a parasite that dogs pick up by taking in the larvae, by licking or eating slugs and snails and also from contaminated water in ponds, buckets or pet bowls left outside. Left untreated, lungworm can result in death but it is easily prevented by giving your pet a monthly worming treatment with a recommended product – so ask your vet for advice. Cocoa mulch, which is often used in the garden, is made from cocoa bean shell, a by-product of the chocolate industry. Like chocolate it can be harmful to dogs if eaten. You should avoid using this type of mulch in areas where dogs have access. Likewise, bone meal can cause gastric intestinal upsets even when eaten in small amounts, and large quantities can cause a blockage of the bowel. Contact your vet immediately if you think that your pet has eaten any toxic plants, flowers or substances, particularly if he shows any of the following symptoms: sickness and/ or diarrhea, unsteadiness, staggering and lack of co-ordination, drooling, oral or skin irritation, increased thirst, or lethargy Be wary of garden ponds. Pets can easily fall into them, panic and become unable to climb to safety.

The garden shed can also be a dangerous place for your pet, as it is commonly used as a storage area for chemicals and poisons. Make sure that dangerous products are kept in secure containers well out of reach of a curious pet. Be particularly careful when storing anti-freeze as it is highly toxic and cats and dogs are particularly attracted to its sweet taste. By taking a few precautionary steps and by being vigilant in the garden you can prevent your pet from falling victim to accidents and injuries – but if your pet does consume a toxic substance get him to a vet without delay. If you have any queries about your pet’s health you can ask Kingston Veterinary Group for advice. Contact us on 01482 223688 or visit our website www.kingstonvet. co.uk

Heritage Learning and Hull Museums are top of the class Record numbers of pupils across the region have visited Hull’s museums with Heritage Learning. In the last year over 11,500 pupils have visited Hull Museums for a Heritage Learning school led session, over 1,300 visits more than the previous year. Teachers across the region have chosen Heritage Learning and Hull Museums as their destination of choice, making it a hugely successful year. From the Stone Age to Hull’s fishing history, children across the region have engaged with the city’s past with Heritage Learning’s creative and engaging style. Sessions have been delivered in line with the national curriculum and have helped teachers bring to life subjects such as history, geography and science. Jane Avison, Heritage Learning Business Manager, said: “It’s fantastic that so many pupils have visited us this year. We believe it is extremely important that children across the region have access to high quality creative learning experiences and what better place to have them at Hull Museums”.
1940’s style entertainment will be provided by Rachael Mills, Colin Bordiel and Ruby Red and there will be the ever popular raffle and bingo. Refreshments will be a 40s buffet, which is included in the ticket price. Lord Mayor Anita Harrison said “It should be a night of fun, laughter and music as well as a money-raiser for three great causes. I hope people will join me in coming along in the fashions of the time because I am looking forward to awarding the prize for the best 1940s outfit.”
“We are confident we can carry this momentum into next year and with our Hull Curriculum project on the horizon, our offer will grow and become even more exciting for pupils!” Luke Berry, Customer Relations Assistant at Heritage Learning, said: “It’s been a great year for us. With the launch of our new website, our national Museums and Heritage Show Award nomination and our Hull Curriculum project, these figures put the icing on the cake!” If you are a teacher and would like to find out more or book your class a trip, visit www.heritage-learning.com or call Heritage Learning on 01482 318 733.
Trinity Market refurbishment gets the go-ahead The refurbishment of Hull’s historic Trinity Indoor Market will now go ahead following approval at today’s planning committee. The £1.6m refit of the Grade 2 listed building and extension will upgrade and repair the main market spaces, stalls and the Market Place frontage with the intention of creating a busy, vibrant indoor market. The main market spaces will include new and refurbished food stall providing more opportunities for eating. The building on North Church Side opposite Holy Trinity Church will be developed into a restaurant. Garry Taylor, City Major Projects Manager said: “Trinity Indoor Market has a very long history in Hull and it is only right that as part of the regeneration of the city centre, the market also receives a facelift. “Now we have the go-ahead we can get this project underway and create the sort of market the traders and residents of Hull can be proud of.” The £1.6m project is funded predominantly by the LEP with £1.35m funding coming from the Regional Growth fund and the top up of £250k from the council’s capital programme budget. Work will begin in the summer of this year, and is programmed to be ready summer 2017. Every effort is being made to ensure that disruption for traders is kept to a minimum.

FLYING HIGH: HULL TO BE TOUCHED BY ANGELS IN SPECTACULAR AERIAL SHOW! Hull 2017 and the Yorkshire Festival will bring Gratte Ciel’s ‘Place des Anges’ to the city, marking the finale of Yorkshire Festival and the opening of Amy Johnson Festival. An aerial spectacle that has wowed crowds in locations across the globe will be flying into Hull this summer. ‘Place des Anges’ will take place in the skies above the city centre this July. The show will provide a jaw-dropping contribution to both the finale of Welcome to Yorkshire’s Yorkshire Festival (June 16 - 3 July) and an extraordinary opening to Amy Johnson Festival, which begins in Hull on Friday July 1. The stunning display on Saturday July 2 will feature aerial performers ‘flying’ across the night sky on invisible zip lines, transforming the area above Hull College in Queens Gardens into ‘Angels’ Place’. Thousands of free tickets are available for the show - which has previously been performed in in Australia, South Africa and London - to witness the angels appear at nightfall, as they gradually emerge in the sky above the college. The show will culminate in an extraordinary display of feather fireworks, creating an enormous, feather ‘blizzard’ to transform the ground below. Place des Anges is a free, ticketed event. Those wishing to register interest for the event should visit hull2017.co.uk/ placedesanges to be the first to find out how to secure a free ticket when they are released in June.
Martin Green, CEO and director of Hull 2017, said: “I am so excited to be presenting the extraordinary Place des Anges as the finale of the Yorkshire Festival and to open the Amy Johnson Festival. Place des Anges is a breath-taking piece of aerial spectacle that creates a real sense of magic and wonder. It will appeal to people of all ages, and has to be seen to be believed. “This event is just one of many in an incredible line-up of cultural events this summer. I’m expecting demand for the free tickets to be extremely high as we prepare to stage the nations’ cultural festival in 2017.” Yorkshire Festival’s Artistic Director, Matt Burman, said: “We are thrilled to be presenting Place des Anges as part of the epic, bold and game-changing Yorkshire Festival 2016. Expect the unexpected with world-class performances, UK and world premieres and exclusives, and even an attempt to break a world record. The Festival will reach the whole of our great, beautiful county across 18 days this June and July. Make sure you come and be part of it!” Place des Anges also marks the beginning of the new Amy Johnson Festival. From July 1 to September 6, the festival will celebrate the life, achievements and legacy of one of Hull’s most famous daughters, through an ambitious international programme of the arts and engineering sciences, appealing to all interests and ages.

How to put up floating shelves Create extra storage or a stylish display area in any room with smart floating shelves, with HullMag’s easy how-to-guide. Floating shelves are sleek, versatile and can provide invaluable extra storage if you lack floor space and just can’t squeeze in another piece of furniture. The brackets and fixings are hidden, making them ideal for minimal or contemporary schemes there’s a place for them in every room in your home. Arrange them with pretty jars and canisters in the kitchen, use them to create a striking colour-coded display of books in your living room or make use of an alcove - the possibilities are endless! All you need to do is decide on the length required, how many shelves you want to put up and the finish (whether natural wood or sleek melamine) and you’re ready to get started. The tools you will need for this job are: • Tape measure • Spirit level • Pencil • Electric wire & pipe detector • Electric drill (and drill bits) • Screwdriver • Screws and fixings: 50mm screws and plastic Rawlplugs if fixing to stone walls; 40mm screws if fixing to wooden studs; 65mm metal plasterboard anchors if fixing to plasterboard • Hammer
How to do it in 5 easy steps 1) Decide where in your room you want the floating shelf/ shelves to go. Use a spirit level and a pencil to mark a horizontal line on the wall the same length as the shelf, as well as a vertical line in the centre. 2) Place the bracket on the horizontal line, using the vertical line to make sure it’s centred. Mark the position of the screw holes on the wall with the pencil. Then, using the wire/pipe detector, check the area of wall that you will be drilling has no cables or pipes. 3) Drill into the wall where your screw holes are marked (longer shelves will have more screw holes). 4) If your wall is made of brick or concrete, tap Rawlplugs into the holes with the hammer so they’re flush with the wall. Screw the bracket into place, checking one last time that it’s straight with the spirit level. 5) Slide the shelf onto the bracket. Fix in place with the screws provided, using the pre-drilled holes on the underside of the shelf. Check out Ikea, Tesco Direct and Homebase for a range of floating shelves.
Weekend Project: Tile a Chimney Breast Artisan tiles are too beautiful just for the bathroom - use them to add a neo-Moorish mood to the living room. How to: Start tiling from above the mantel, or, if you don’t have one, start from a baton levelled with a spirit level (not the skirting or floor as these can be uneven). Apply a thick layer of tile adhesive to the wall using a tile float (a metal spatula with a serracted edge). Use tile spacers, or, if the tiles are uneven, judge the space by eye. Grout tiles after placing them in position using a grouting float. If you are looking to pick up reclaimed artisan tiles in the Hull and East Riding area you should check out local reclaimation yards, you can also get the look with new reproduction tiles which are available from the major suppliers.

The numbers are adding up for East Yorkshire bookkeeper Liz Turpin as business growth in just four years has led to a three-fold increase in staffing.
Turpin Book-keeping Services started out in Liz’s house after she spent three years delivering advice to start-up businesses. She can now boast a client list of 60 small businesses, stretching from Burstwick to Howden, and has recruited her first employees – covering one full-time and one part-time job. Liz says: “I’m excited by the expansion and the growth of the firm which has happened through networking and word of mouth. It’s a good news story for East Yorkshire and fulfils an ambition for me, after just four years, to create jobs. I’ve worked hard over this time to set up the business and. After operating the company for two years from premises in Hull, I have come back home.”

HM: What was your job with the company then? Maxine: I was a colour technician and then went on to be the salon manger. HM: Do you consider Cottingham your home now? Maxine: Most definitely. I had planned to move back down south, but I fell in love with the area and after some 30 plus years, I am still here. HM: What’s the best thing about running your own business? Maxine: I am passionate about hairdressing, so doing something I love every day is amazing plus I love to make people feel good about themselves. HM: One of our team – Jane Gough, recently put Maxine’s talents to the test and this is what she had to say: “Having recently had the opportunity of experiencing Maxine’s hairdressing talents personally, I would have no hesitation in referring her to any of my many friends or colleagues, the cut is the best i’ve ever had”.

other churches set in historic architectural buildings. There are plenty of lovely gardens and parks to walk around.
We have nearly 20,000 people living here! (Yes a village). The village is served very well by other 150 retailers plus small to national businesses all working close within the village.
The Cottingham & District Traders Association is a thriving group of retailers and businesses working hard to promote the village and what it has to offer. We strive to help each other were ever we can. The aim is vey simple to promote the village whilst also improving the ambience and shoppers experience.
Using the word “Largest” is something Cottingham is very proud to use!! Not only does the village boost being the largest in the UK, but also in population as well.
Within 30 minutes drive of Cottingham are over a further 500,000 people. The village has ample “FREE” parking. Over 170 buses per day serve the retail centre, from all around East Yorkshire. The train station is only 600m from the shops on the main Hull to Scarborough line.Sitting on the outskirts of Hull and surrounded by the Yorkshire Wolds it make for a lovely place to live and come shopping in. A shoppers delight with a beautiful array of boutique style shops, Café bars, Restaurants and some lovely public houses. All unique in style and what they have to offer. Turn around each corner and there is something new to excite your shopping experience. We also have a balanced offering of high street names. Look a bit further and you will find the beautiful St Mary’s Church along with
If you like beer – you’ll love Hedon Insurance Paul Welsh, Director of Hedon Insurance and Manager of the Cottingham branch, likens arranging your own insurance to brewing your own beer.
Whilst unconventional, Paul’s parable illustrates the point – perfectly. Here’s why he’s come to that conclusion… I like beer. I like beer very much. So, about 7 years ago I bought a beer making kit to try and make it myself. How difficult could it be? Lots of people do it and lots of companies sell kits. Well, I tried it and it’s not easy! So, after numerous, unpalatable failed attempts I decided I would leave it to the experts and buy it from the King Billy! I believe people arranging their insurance themselves, either online or via comparison sites, must be motivated by that same ‘Do it yourself’ enthusiasm and spirit – although the financial rewards for doing so are largely illusory and the consequences of getting it wrong – catastrophic. We also see a fair number of people allowing family members, friends or even neighbours to arrange quotations and cover for them. When I hear this I shudder – ‘claim refused for non-disclosure of material facts’ that’s a great recipe for a family fall out, if ever I saw one! I guess though, it’s only similar to me trying to save money on my favourite tipple. But, obtaining the cheapest premium appears to be the single driving force – irrespective of the quality of cover, the policy benefits or how good or bad the claims service may be. My advice is don’t put yourself through it. At Hedon Insurance, we can very often beat the direct markets and comparison sites through skilful broking, but most importantly, we get it right. You can call in at my branch anytime for a chat or give us a call on 01482 707800 – better still take me to the King Billy for a pint!”
Gone are the days of old style boring meetings as we meet socially on a regular basis with them nights on improving business aspects (all welcome). The village whilst big retains a local friendly feel and a very warm welcome. Many generations of families can be traced back and still live within the community. Many events are held in the centre and surrounding facilities like Cottingham Parks, The Lawns & King George Playing Fields. Over 3,000 students for Hull University reside within Cottingham plus each summer we have over 1,500 junior students staying at The Lawns. These travel from all around the world to stay in Cottingham. This is very exciting times as they become part of the village community. Every Thursday on The Market Green is held a weekly market offering a wide range of products and exciting products. Well worth a walk around. There is more and more to Cottingham than a village between Hull and Beverley. Come spend some time with us and enjoy all we have to offer. You will not be disappointed!

For 2017 they have created a number of very different itineraries which are proving very popular with regular cruisers looking for new ports of call. Instead of the Norwegian Fjords how about the Swedish Fjords or Danish Waterways? Or closer to home the Lochs & Isles of Scotland? River cruising is also opening up more with the shallow keel of Breamar being able to navigate rivers to the heart of the city for example Bordeaux, Antwerp and Hamburg plus allowing you to get up close to some very special events for example Seville’s April Fair’s Fireworks display. We have a ship visit with lunch in August if you fancy a preview? Adventure Cruising The options are endless and there is a cruise out there for everyone you just need guiding towards the right ship to suit you. We are always honest with our opinion based on real experience as both myself and Lynne have first hand experience of more than 150 Antarctica ships that ply the Oceans & Rivers of the world from ships that take a maximum of 24 guests to those catering for 5,300! We can also charter you your own ship for 4 to 12 guests allowing you to create your own itinerary with or without crew subject to your sailing qualifications, Cruising always is perceived as a luxury! Spit don’t swallow to get boost from energy drinks without calories Swilling energy drinks may provide the same sporting benefits as drinking them - but without the calories. Trials carried out on fencers showed their lunges became more accurate after they rinsed their mouths with a sports drink containing maltodextrin, a sugar, even though they then spat it out. The research by the University of Hertfordshire showed the mere presence of maltodextrin in the mouth was enough to stimulate areas of the brain associated with motivation and accuracy. By contrast, fencers who rinsed their mouths with just water recorded a decrease in performance, due to tiredness. Sports drinks have long been a mainstay of sportsmen and women, providing a boost of sugar, salt and carbohydrates which the body turns into energy. But these latest findings herald the prospect of parks and tennis courts becoming blighted by calorie-conscious athletes spitting out their their fluids rather than swallowing them. A previous University of Oxford study found a 380ml bottle of Lucozade Energy contains 266 calories - virtually the same as that in a Mars bar (260 calories) - which would take about half an hour of jogging to burn off. Swilling is unlikely to appeal to people involved in endurance sports, however, as it does nothing to re-hydrate the body. Dr Lindsay Bottoms, a senior lecturer in exercise physiology at Hertfordshire University and one of the study’s authors, said swilling a sports drink had the same effect as swallowing it for exercise lasting between 30 and 60 minutes. The research for the study involved 12 club-level fencers each performing two trials.
Rinsing the mouth with energy drink improves performance without the calories In one trial they rinsed their mouths with a sports drink containing maltodextrin for five seconds and on a separate occasion they rinsed with water. The flavourless nature of the sugar meant the fencers did not know which substance they had swilled. They then performed a lunge test - the most common attacking motion in fencing - to determine accuracy. The fencers then carried out other exercises while stopping to rinse their mouths either with water or the sports drink. They then repeated the accuracy test. The results revealed those who had rinsed with maltodextrin improved their accuracy by an average of 6.4%, while the accuracy of the fencers who rinsed with water dropped by 3.3%. Another study by the University of Birmingham appears to back up the findings, after scientists there found that cyclists who rinsed their mouths with a drink containing maltodextrin performed significantly better in one-hour time trials than cyclists who only rinsed with water.

BUDDING SCHOOL AND COMMUNITY GARDENERS INVITED TO TAKE PART IN NEW GARDEN FESTIVAL Schools and community groups across Hull and East Yorkshire are being invited to take part in an exciting new garden festival being organised by Heritage Landscape and Garden Centre, near Melton. It’s hoped that with the help of the garden centre’s own team of experts, and local radio and TV personalities, entrants will be spurred on to produce some fantastic gardens, the theme of which is entirely their own interpretation of ‘Nature’s Finest’. The event, the Yorkshire Garden Festival, is free to enter and is open to nurseries and schools, as well as local community groups. A pallet will be left with the school entrants so their creations can be transported to the garden centre however the community groups will have a plot available to them on site from the beginning of April.
They will then be judged by both the general public and a team of gardening experts over a series of dates throughout the festival, which starts on 30th April and runs until 29th August. Each community garden will receive £500 worth of credit towards plants and materials, schools will each receive £100 towards their creation, and at the end of the festival there will be the chance to win The People’s Award.

Heritage Landscape Centre is one of Yorkshire’s premier landscaping companies with an award- winning coffee shop and restaurant. It hosts water features, garden buildings and endless amounts of inspiration! Ian Ashbridge, the festival’s Creative Director, says of the inaugural festival: “We are delighted with the response we have already had from schools and community groups across the area. We have wanted to work with the local community for some time now and already work with charities and find it so rewarding. “We know that there is so much talent out there that remains untapped and unrecognised and so we decided to do something about it. We’ve got the facilities here and want to make the best use of them. “There is nothing like this. In fact the nearest Garden Festival which runs along these lines is in Scotland so we would encourage everyone to get Hull and East Yorkshire firmly on the map.” To find out more or to take part please telephone 01482 339311, or email: festival.office@yorkshiregardenfestival.co.uk or you can visit the Yorkshire Garden Festival website at www.yorkshiregardenfestival.co.uk

Growing Carrots
It’s nice to see a vegetable on the plate which isn’t green. Carrots are not the easiest vegetable to grow, but they are not difficult either. A long cropping season is possible. 12 months of the year if the maincrop is properly stored in sand. Carrots do not really freeze well, even though people do freeze them. A deep medium to sandy soil is best. Free of large stones preferably. Heavier clay soils will grow carrots if they are well worked and improved. Fresh manure should not be added before sowing. In a 3 year rotation the carrots will go on the plot manured 2 years ago. Liming shouldn’t be needed unless the soil is below pH 6.5. Carrots do not require as high a pH as do Brassicas or Peas and Beans. A nutrient content in balance suits carrots. Adjust soil according to soil test results, if a test has been carried out. Otherwise use a balanced general purpose fertilizer (NPK proportions 1:1:1 multiples of by percentage such as 10:10:10) Liquid feeding may be needed during growth. Water the crop frequently in dry spells, as carrots have a high water content, and therefore a need for plenty of water. If they get too dry, the roots will harden up, and then crack when soil returns to be being moist again. Carrots can be anything from small round roots like golf balls to long tapering roots about 60cm long. Not many people will want either of those, and somewhere inbetween in best. Early varieties are usually stump rooted and grow to approximately 10 to 15cm long. Maincrop may be pointed or stump rooted and reach up to 25cm long.
The distance between rows varies, depending on the variety and circumstances. In cold frames or on hot beds an early variety needs only 15cm between the rows. Outdoor sowings require 25 to 30cm between rows. To walk between the rows to hoe etc a distance of less than 25cm would make life difficult, even though carrot tops do not need very much space. Sow thinly, and thinning will not be required. Just pull the largest first and leave the rest to develop. If thinned, 5cm should be enough, even for maincrop carrots. No-one wants enormous carrots anymore. Carrot root fly is a real problem with carrots, but it shouldn’t be. It is very easy to prevent. There is no need to resort to chemicals either. Organically grown carrots grown commercially are often full of carrot root fly larvae. I prefer my vegetables without maggots. Gardeners may notice that the crops grown in Cold frames do not get effected, but outdoor crops do. The reason is the carrot fly is a ground hopping insect, unable to jump higher than 30cm. The cold frame effectively creates a barrier. If a frame without its top is used to grow the outdoor crop during the summer then that too will not be effected. Have the sides 45cm high for good measure. Of course organic Farmers with big fields cannot do this, which is why supermarket organic carrots often have been affected. For non organic growing, effective chemical pesticides are available to the professional. Soil pesticides available to Amateurs do not seem to be very effective. Potent chemicals are just not allowed into the hands of Amateurs nowadays by law. The barrier method is better for both organic and non organic gardeners. Pull young carrots throughout the season by successionally sowing up to June. Maincrop can be lifted and stored in Autumn. In milder and dryer areas it is possible to leave the crop in the ground overwinter and dig as required.

Supporting The Local Community
FOR THE RECORD KCFM are doing something truly special this year, and we’d love you to be a part of it! We’ll be creating what’s called ‘social history’, where the experiences of ordinary people are collected to help bring to life a particular era - and no, you don’t have to be ancient to get involved!
31 To do this, we’ll be spending April, May and June out and about, talking to people from East Yorkshire about their memories from childhood and early adulthood. What do you remember about growing up, or your primary school? What's your earliest memory? Where was the first place you worked? What are the family stories that you tell again and again when you’re all together? These are the kind of memories we’d love you to share with us. All the stories we collect are going to be permanently archived by ‘Hull Libraries’ and ‘Hull History Centre’, so you really could become part of the history of East Yorkshire, there for all to enjoy for years to come. If you’d like to take part, or know someone who would, you can get in touch through our website, kcfm.co.uk. Just click ‘For The Record’ on the front page and let us know – you can have a look at old photos of the area while you’re there. You can hear all the memories by listening to KCFM through April, May and June. You can find us on 99.8FM, through our free app (just search for KCFM) or through our website, kcfm.co.uk

Mathematically it is unlikely that Cardiff City will deny them a top 6 position but even when we stumble over this particular finishing line the likelihood is that this will be as far as they go this season. Can anyone see victories over Sheffield Wednesday, Derby or the side who fail to go up automatically from Boro, Burnley or Brighton? There is more of a likelihood that our ‘stars’ may rise to the occasion if we reach Wembley but we have failed to defeat Wednesday, Brighton or Derby for starters and Derby have already put six goals past us this season.
East Stand Views...
The wheels have well and truly fallen off again this season. Points were dropped in home games against the likes of Forest and Milton Keynes but when the big matches came up they failed. An injury time defeat at Middlesbrough was unjust but as ever when we had the oportunities to capitalise on our dominance we fluffed our lines. Boro had more or less one opportunity but took it. The Derby games was worse with a 4-0 defeat. The two games since that defeat have been shambolic and arguably Steve Bruce’s neck was on the line before the spectacular last minute goal from Robert Snodgrass against Wolves. The position of Steve Bruce (above) has been much debated recently. Aston Villa have been rumoured to be chasing him to lead their potential Championship renaissance with one

tabloid even suggesting they would happily pay City £2 million compensation. If they are so keen I am rapidly coming to the opinion that they should bite their hand off. The squad we have should have walked this division but too many times have they gone into games defensively especially against weaker opposition, then lose 1-0, we play with one forward partnered by Diame when the midfielder decides to turn up, they have no strategy to break sides down and too often ‘big names’ are accomodated to the detriment of the team particularly Huddlestone and Diame. Currently the team do not look motivated, do not work as a team and have no leadership. Added to the current mix are players lacking interest or thinking of their next move, Elmohamady has had an appalling attitude all season but efforts over the past two games have reached a new low whilst Hernandez has faded away since the hype about moves to Arsenal or Italy surfaced in February. Treat the Arsenal rumour with a pinch of salt! Diame is spouting about needing a return to the Premier League. I’ll pay his bus fare if that materialises. He is the epitomy of what has been wrong this season. Too many of our ‘stars’ fail to turn up for the battle or against the ‘lesser opposition’ such as in the defeats at Rotherham and Preston.
Snodgrass (pictured top right), Livermore, Dawson and Hernandez. Maybe another £20-30 million could come in for these players but how much would be left for a possible new manager to spend. No Promotion will mean No Takeover! City will still be £70 million in debt and much of this cash could be taken to repay the debts/ Allams. Added to the mix is the club’s latest PR disaster of the proposed membership scheme. This will replace season tickets from next year but the Upper West Stand fans are turfed out of their seats, pensioners and teenagers have to pay adult rates and fans could be forced to change seats throughout the ground. Thousands could well decide not to bother and so we could have less than 10,000 passholders from next season. There is only one way this could go unless a side of quality lower division players are brought in for another promotion push and there is a realistic match day price to attract non-passholders.
Lets just hope that we can reach Wembley and go up through the playThere have been lots of transfer offs. A takeover may then follow or rumours over the past few weeks. at least the debts can be refinanced Robertson to join Man Utd or Arsenal through the massive tv revenues next for £15 Million, West Brom chasing year. I can’t see this at the moment Livermore and Robertson and Palace but as we all say Hull City always do possibly returning for Diame. This things the hard way! brings us the bigger issue of this season’s failure. Where do Hull City go from here? The likes of Elmo, Aluko and Huddlestone will walk away for free in June. No great loss and more than £100k a week off the wage bill. More worryingly players who gave it a season to return to the Premier League could also be poached such as Robertson,
Words by Woody Mellor
So much for our earlier optimism, this is the second consecutive season where Hull City appear to have thrown it all away. After spending most of the season within the top 3, leading the division on several occassions and defeating both Middlesbrough and Burnley we are now struggling to maintain a position within the playoffs.

At the time of writing, I am so excited because I have finally set up to do a regular online groceries shop – and my first delivery is tonight between 9 and 10pm. I know this is probably really sad and you’ve probably been doing it for years, but I can’t help myself!! Is it wrong to feel so proud of myself?!!!!

“As the world speeds up through technological advances, it’s important to remember the slower things in life.” I couldn’t agree more! I read this in a great article in the Huffington Post about Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter and author Tom Friedman who was talking about the importance of actually talking to people in person (i.e. not email or text conversations!), parenting and relationships. He said: “The faster the world gets ... the more you need to step back and appreciate everything that’s old and slow. The really important stuff today, as the world gets faster, is all the stuff you can’t download.” This is so true. We need to take time to take a breath every now and then, savour what we have, talk to each other and, I know this is controversial, maybe even switch off our phones!!
It’s Gardening Season Yes the Spring is finally here and so it’s time to get back out there, cut the grass, trim the bushes and just generally have a good tidy up in the garden. A friend of mine was just commenting on how she hadn’t been organised enough last Autumn to hack everything back and so is now really jealous of everyone else’s really nice gardens! Perhaps she needs some pointers from the first ever Yorkshire Garden Festival that’s being hosted at the Heritage Landscape & Garden Centre in Melton from the end of April right through until the end of August. Community projects, schools and charities across Hull & East Yorkshire are all being asked to design a garden to enter the competition. Who needs Chelsea and Harrogate when we’re about to have our very own festival here?!! Actually I could do with some advice on moving my hydrangeas!
