Pets Page
First Aid for Pets
Each month, vet Dr. David Robinson from the Kingston Veterinary Group will be giving advice about looking after your pets. In this month’s Pets Page he talks about emergency treatment and first aid for several common incidents.
Insect Stings & Bites The stings of bees and wasps are most commonly found on the face, head, or inside the mouth. Some insects, such as bees, leave their stinger behind and it should be removed by scraping it out using your fingernail, a credit card or any stiff edged object. Do not remove the stinger with tweezers or your fingers as this can cause it to release more venom. Wasps and hornets can cause multiple stings because their venom stinger remains attached to them. To treat a sting or bite, make a paste of baking soda and water and apply it directly to the sting to relieve itching. Apply an ice pack (covered with a cloth) or cold compress to reduce pain and swelling. Monitor your pet for the next day or so as stings and bites can cause severe reactions. If your pet develops major swelling, disorientation, fever, sickness, diarrhea, or has trouble breathing contact your vet immediately. Bleeding Applying direct pressure to a wound is the best way to stop bleeding. Place a clean cloth or gauze compress over the wound to absorb the blood and to help the blood to clot.
If blood soaks through the compress place a fresh compress on top of the old one and continue to apply pressure. If your pet’s leg or foot is bleeding severely, and there is no evidence of a broken bone, gently elevate the leg so that it is above the level of the heart, and continue to apply firm pressure to the wound. Elevation slows the bleeding, by using the force of gravity to help reduce blood pressure to the injured area. Internal bleeding can often be more dangerous as it is less obvious and there is usually a delay in having it investigated by a vet. However, external signs of internal bleeding to look out for include pale or white gums, a painful stomach when touched, coughing up blood or having difficulty breathing, cool legs, ears or tail, weakness and collapse. If you cannot stem external bleeding or you suspect internal bleeding, take your pet to the vet immediately. Sickness & Diarrhoea: Although sickness and diarrhoea usually resolve within 24 hours, if your pet has an existing health problem, such as diabetes, or is a puppy or kitten, veterinary advice should be sought straight away. If there is blood in diarrhoea and/or vomit coupled with severe lethargy and weakness, or if your pet appears to be in pain, this should be treated as an emergency, and you should contact your vet immediately. Although emergency pet treatment and first aid should never be a substitute for veterinary care, knowing what to do in an emergency could save your pet’s life. If you have any queries about your pet’s health you can ask us for advice. Contact us on 01482 223688 or visit our website www.kingstonvet.co.uk

Call on schools to stand up for health
A Hull school, in partnership with Hull City Council, is launching a campaign to get physical activity into the classroom, boosting students’ fitness levels and concentration. Alex Sherwood, a School Games Organiser and Health and Wellbeing Lead on behalf of the Youth Sport Trust, of Sirius Academy decided to launch Hull Schools Stand Up in response to research demonstrating clear links between education and health, which warns children and young people spend too much time being sedentary. Hull Schools Stand up, which will take place on Wednesday June 22, will encourage teachers at schools across the city to get pupils on their feet for at least half the duration of every classroom lesson. Schools will also be urged to organise standing assemblies, standing staff meetings and ‘active breaks’, during any sustained period of sitting. Parents and carers will be asked to do their bit by getting students to school on foot, by bike or using other active means wherever possible. Mr Sherwood has created a guide for teachers to Hull Schools Stand Up, including suggestions for ways to take part and facts and infographics on the benefit of physical activity on studying. He has already spoken to city schools about his plan and got many on board, including Rokeby Primary, Marfleet Primary, Sidmouth Primary and St Mary’s College. He said: “Improving the health and wellbeing of young people within schools has the potential to improve their educational outcomes. The culture, ethos and environment of a school influences the health and wellbeing of pupils and their readiness to learn. “Healthier pupils are likely to achieve better academically. All children and young people should minimise the amount of time spent being sedentary for extended periods. Emerging evidence indicates that sedentary behaviours are associated with overweight and obesity and metabolic dysfunction in young people.
To help children meet activity guidelines, opportunities to be physically active need to be available on a daily basis within the constraints of other pressures such as school learning time. Incorporating active lessons or active breaks into teaching and learning can potentially have a huge impact, not only on students’ health, but on their achievement whilst at school”. Schools Stand Up has been welcomed by Cllr Gwen Lunn, Portfolio Holder for Public Health, Prevention and Safeguarding Adults. She said: “We warmly welcome this fantastic initiative. Mr Sherwood has taken a bold and exciting step in implementing this day of action in Hull and in doing so he is highlighting a number of important issues. The benefits of regular exercise extend beyond the maintenance of good health and, as the studies which inspired him demonstrated, can help pupils maintain focus on their studies. “We hope to see schools across the city taking part on the day and even applying these principles long-term. While there is an important message behind Schools Stand Up, it should also be a really fun, exciting and creative day for both pupils and teachers.” In addition to delivering active lessons on June 22, teachers and pupils will be sharing their experiences on social media using #HullStandsUp. A range of resources will be available to help teachers plan active lessons and all participants are strongly encouraged to share lesson plans and creative ideas.

Morning After Euro 2016 Campaign As the Euro 2016 campaign continues, Safer Roads Humber is promoting the Morning After campaign to remind motorists not to drink and drive. Coinciding with the tournament in France, the campaign was launched on 10 June and will run until 10 July 2016, with a range of resources to remind people how long it takes for alcohol to pass through the body. And with three of the four Home Nations participating, the tournament provides the perfect opportunity to issue a reminder of the dangers of morning-after drink-driving. Safer Roads Humber and its partners support the campaign which will have a social media presence - using the hashtag #AvoidThePenalty - and will be promoted via the Morning After Facebook and Twitter pages. Ruth Gore, spokesperson for Safer Roads Humber, said: “With England, Wales and Northern Ireland all involved this time round, Euro 2016 has already captured the imagination of a vast audience across the UK. “Friends and families come together at home and in pubs and clubs to enjoy the matches and, in many cases, a few celebratory drinks. “Our campaign aims to provide a timely reminder of how long it takes for alcohol to pass through the body, in a bid to help motorists avoid unwittingly driving while over the limit the ‘morning after’.” Along with social media, 10,000 postcards will be distributed at local pubs and a range of events in the coming weeks. The campaign is supported by all local councils, Humberside Police and Humberside Fire and Rescue Service who are working together to get the “don’t drink and drive” message out to local residents. Melissa Hobson, road safety team leader for Humberside Fire and Rescue Service, said: “The vast majority of motorists will leave their car at home while watching matches with friends in the pub while others may decide to watch games at home with a couple of drinks. “The Morning After Campaign helps us to raise awareness of how long alcohol can take to completely leave the body, meaning that could be driving the next day still impaired by the alcohol you drank the night before. “The campaign helps our service and our partners to promote both the ‘drink drive’ and ‘morning after’ messages. Humberside Fire and Rescue Service is pleased to be supporting the Morning After campaign, not only during the Euro 2016 but throughout the entire year.” The Morning After campaign The Morning After campaign, which has been running for several years, is designed to help normally responsible people avoid the risk of a drink-drive conviction – or worse still, cause a collision or casualties while ‘over the limit’. The campaign includes a website which receives on average more than 30,000 visits each month and an app which has had more than 15,000 downloads. A morning after calculator can be downloaded free of charge from Google Play and the App Store. Data from the Government’s THINK! campaign revealed that in 2013 an estimated 740 reported drink-drive collisions took place on a morning and around 5,500 people fail breath tests between 6am and midday every year. The THINK! research also found that 58% of those surveyed (800 drivers) would have four or more drinks on a night out and still sometimes take a risk by driving the following morning – with only a third (33%) aware they could still be over the limit.

It’s time to renew your insurance policy. Where’s your first port of call? A price comparison site? But do they still offer the best prices? With so many to choose from these days – compare the market, money supermarket etc, customers are finding that they are entering exactly the same details in multiple sites, but the same insurers are offering different prices. Whether it’s home or car insurance, more and more of the mainstream insurers are turning their back on the price comparison sites and looking at alternative distribution strategies, Aviva – the UK’s largest insurer – stopped offering quotes on comparison sites a couple of years back and since then the comparison quote medium has lost significant gravitas. If you go online many customers don’t have the level of expertise to navigate a quote system effectively. Many customers find that insurers on the price comparison sites have high excesses as standard to make the price appear more reasonable. At Hedon Insurance we don’t just look at one insurer, we are able to check the prices of all the large, reliable insurers – a panel of around 30-40 – on behalf of our customers. We also ask all the relevant questions to make sure that the correct policy for the customers circumstances is recommended.

New Opening Times for Hull’s Household Waste Recycling
Humberfield household waste recycling centre (HWRC) near Hessle. The shop is a joint set up between Hull and East Riding Councils, operated by FCC a specialist recycling/reuse company, which sells items in good condition which have been ”rescued” from recycling centres and would otherwise have been disposed of. It’s a unique retailer, with everything from reconditioned bicycles and TVs, household furniture and bric a brac to garden items, golf clubs and games. The shop opens seven days a week from 10 am – 5 pm. Local charities benefit too with donations from purchases going to local charities.
From Monday 6 June, opening times at Hull’s three household waste recycling centres are changing.
The sites at Sutton Fields, Wiltshire Road and Burma Drive will open daily from 10am to 5pm, except for Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve, when opening times are 10am to 4pm, and Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day when the sites are closed. Normal daily opening hours apply to all other Bank Holidays.
1990’s Hull Music Celebration An historic event is being held at the Adelphi on Saturday 9th July to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the monthly Where? Music magazine and the support given to local musicians by editor Tim Joseph.
The sites have opened daily until 6pm, and explaining this change Cllr John Black, Cabinet Member whose portfolio includes recycling and waste management said “We needed to make savings in the operating costs for the three recycling centres and closing at 5pm makes sense as this is when the sites are the quietest. The saving achieved allows us to keep all three centres open seven days per week.”
This gig will see the return of a dozen acts who performed in the early 90’s and the vast majority are reforming especially play at this event after a break of over twenty years.
The recycling sites are for Hull residents, and to use them people should display a pass in their car. Alternatively, if a pass hasn’t been received or has been lost, people can use the sites by showing proof of address in Hull with a utility bill or driving licence. Another opportunity for Hull residents to recycle and also to reuse things people no longer want is the Re-use Shop at
There will be musicians who performed in three of the most significant acts from the city between 1983-93 namely the Red Guitars, Housemartins and Kingmaker and several acts from this era including Hub, The Von Trapps, Suffocation. New Day Rising, Heidi Kruger, Looking for Adam and Ian Beharrell. “Occasionally bands make a one off come back gig but never eight on one evening. I expect the night to be a sell out. This will be the gig of the year.” said event organiser Chris Warkup.

Ladies Day Feature
Three Top Fashion Tips for Beverley Ladies Day Wednesday 10th August
HullMag’s fashion editor Frankie Gee shares her top tips for Ladies Day at the races. It’s all about the dress Forget wearing separates for Ladies Day, it should be about embracing your femininity and wearing a dress is the best way to do that. There are so many options out there, both in the shops and on the internet. This can often make choosing your perfect dress a little daunting, but it doesn’t have to be. My advice would be to dress for you and not for what’s ‘in fashion’. Embrace your shape and always draw attention to your best feature by showing it off in the clothes you wear. So for example, if you love your waist, wear something to complement your waist. If you have killer legs then go for a slightly short number -nothing too short though – or if your décolletage is to die for, something low cut but not too revealing. By showing off your best assets you will instantly feel and look more confident. It’s all about drawing attention away from the parts you don’t love about yourself and to the parts you do. Racing Colours Anything bold and bright is a winning choice for Ladies Day at Beverley. I would stick to primary colours, neon’s and patterns are most definitely out. Patterns are often hard to wear; always appear less formal and are really hard to accessorise. Colours should complement one another and if you are wearing more than one, they should always be in the same tonal range. Wearing the wrong colour can really wash you out, so try on lots of different ones and you will instantly be able to see what colours work on you and which don’t. Colour is personal, always choose the colour of the dress first and the style second. So remember, if you fall in love with a dress and the colour drains you, go back to the fitting room and try again. Colour always comes first.
Hats and Fascinators Hats can be a tricky business but as a rule most people suit fascinators. They really are a good safe option if you are not sure what will work on you. Hats are dependent on individual face shapes so again, try as many on as possible. The key is to always try a hat on when you are wearing your whole outfit. A hat should always be the last thing to add. All the top milliners work with the clients outfits prior to the design of the hat. Investing in a really great haircut and blow dry before the big event is great to help keep your hat in place and show it off to its best potential. Finally, enjoy your day at the races.

Wild about Bananas Nutritionist Karen Mann shares her passion for the nations favourite fruit... The Banana I remember as a child being given mashed bananas on a little plate from my favourite tea set. Since then I have just loved bananas...they have remained a lifelong friend and whenever I run out of the house for the office, I grab my keys and I grab a banana. I watch my husband some mornings. He leaves with a banana in his mouth as he locks the door. I started to wonder about this. There must be something amazing in bananas as we keep coming back for more. I often watch my fruit bowl and it seems empty if there are no bananas in the bowl. I buy at least 10 each week and my husband, probably a man thing, comes home with 3. I give him that “banana eye look” as if to say you are kidding right. Within a few hours all the bananas have gone and I know that they go back as my number 1 fruit each time I visit the greengrocer. I have developed a wonderful relationship with Daniel, our local greengrocer, and he assists me when selecting my fruit. As a greengrocer, he hears the whispers from nature, doesn’t he? I think there must be a language, unspoken, between him and his fruit. Anyway, getting back to the nourishing banana... So what is so special about the bright yellow fruit t hat we all seem to love so much? B = bananas build healthy cells and support the building of muscles and protein synthesis A = abundant in many nutrients – potassium, phosphorus, magnesium, calcium, iron, selenium, manganese, copper, zinc.. vitamin A, B1, B2, B3, B6, Folate, C, E and K N = night calm - assists with better sleep due to the potassium content and also reduces the risk of hypertension and stroke A = absolute nourishment even supporting pregnant mothers and infants N = natural sugars – 3 found in bananas – along with fibre – this explains the instant boost of energy when you eat a banana A = always respect and be mindful as the banana has made a long journey to get to you. Bananas were first found in the region of Malaysia. They then found their way to India dating back to the 6th Century BC. It was Alexander the Great who bought the banana back with him to the Western World. Next time you are having a banana, taste it and feel the nutrients as they enter your blood stream and be thankful that it is part of your daily nourishment.

Bananas are • Calming • Nourishing • Ease anxiety • Improve your sleep • Reduce high blood pressure • Defend and heal against infections • Assist with protein synthesis I always think of my wonderful grandmother when I buy bananas. Along with the quince, banana was her favourite fruit. She must have known that bananas had so much potassium. My mother-in-law loved a banana roll and said this was one of her favourites. She too knew of the jam packed nutrition that lived in the banana. Next time you eat a banana witness how it makes you feel...

Travel
Japan land of the rising sun ... A must on your bucket list of places to visit in the world. An amazing country ideal for a first faraway holiday to the East. A 14 hour flight plus 8 hour time difference was easy to cope with as outbound it was overnight and returning during the day so was normal bed time when we arrived home. I am pleased to report we had 20 happy guests. Having travelled extensively in the Far East I was bowled over with Japan. The country is extremely safe & clean with super people and a wonderful culture. Strolling around and not having to watch your bag or be hassled by hawkers sounds good? Then Japan is the place for you. The Japanese are full of respect for everything and everybody. You will not encounter any litter or dirt and toilets are immaculate. There are plenty of quality hotels ours were all 4 star properties. Food in the hotels tends to be expensive but out and about you will find restaurants to suit all tastes and reasonable on the pocket too. You do not have to worry about the language as many of the restaurants offer pictures menus should they not have one to offer you written in English. Travelling around Japan by the bullet train is easy, fast and efficient and offers great views of the countryside. We were well cared for on our tour and our luggage was carried by road allowing us to hop on and off the trains with just an overnight bag. Japan is a large country for the size of the population which is concentrated in large cities on around 7% of the land due to much of the country being inhabitable because of the mountainous terrain. You will see Temples, Shrines and Churches all over and it is interesting that many of the Japanese practice all three religions centred around their festivals. Mount Fuji was a highlight of our tour as you can see from the photo above we had excellent weather to get such good views, which is not always the case. We enjoyed an excellent mix of sightseeing from the busy capital Tokyo where we enjoyed Temples, Gardens, fashionable shopping areas & a huge fish market to the sad memories that linger in city of Hiroshima. Kyoto, the old capital, keeps alive the romantic side of Japan with its old area of Gion, its Geisha’s and the option to wear Kimono’s. Here we stayed a night in a Royokan a must do but just for the one night! Sitting on the floor for meals & sleeping on the floor plus eating traditional food was a fun experience. This was an added extra to the cost of the tour. It is very popular and must be booked when paying your deposit for your holiday. As an idea of price, this 13 day tour runs from October through to May from £2999 per person sharing a twin room. The tour is fully escorted with an English tour manager and includes all sightseeing with guides. In October 2017 we will be offering a special departure with travel from your door too. At Marion Owen Travel we offer a full portfolio of holidays by all modes of transport so don’t hesitate to get in touch and let us organise your next life enriching adventure. Marion

Hessle Feature
Hessle: A Great Shopping Destination with added History Hessle is a vibrant and bustling town situated on the north bank of the Humber Estuary where the Humber Bridge crosses from North Lincolnshire. At the heart of the town is Hessle Square, with its numerous shops and a small businesses with more gems to be found on Prestongate, The Weir and the rest of the town. Hessle is only a short drive from Hull and is served by frequent buses and trains making it an ideal destination for a days shopping. As a shopping destination it boasts a wide and varied selection of independent shops and boutiques as well as traditional High Street shops, that have long since disappeared from so many of the East Riding towns. Also blessed with some fantastic restaurants, cafĂŠs and pubs you can decide whether to grab a coffee and cake, a pint and sandwich or whether to relax with friends over a two or three course meal. Hessle All Saints Church is located just off the Square and was designated in 1967 by English Heritage as a Grade I listed building. Hessle Town Hall was built in 1897 and is situated at the top of South Lane. Hessle Police Station is next door to the Town Hall at the top of South Lane and the corner of Ferriby Road. The Upper School site of Hessle
High School situated on Heads Lane is centred on a building donated to the Education Authority by Algernon Barkworth, a survivor of the Titanic disaster (visit the HullMag Facebook Page for the full story). In recent times, Hessle was a centre for shipbuilding. Before 1897, there was a shipyard building wooden boats, but it was then bought by Henry Scarr who moved there from Beverley, where he had previously been in partnership with his brother Joseph. Scarr produced iron and steel ships until 1932, when the yard was taken over by Richard Dunston. It was the largest shipyard in Hessle, building vessels such as Loch Riddon, a roll-on/roll-off ferry launched in 1986, and one of four built for

The location is now used as offices, car sales buildings and a dock for scrap metal and other materials for dispatch to other areas, or to be recycled. Richard Dunston is a well known name in Hessle, his ship yard on the banks of the Humber built many ships over the years, one of which was the Sir Winston Churchill (pictured in Dunstons Yard below). Sir Winston Churchill was a sail training ship which was built in Hessle, Yorkshire by Richard Dunston Ltd. She was sold out of service in 2000 and currently serves as a private yacht. Sir Winston Churchill was designed by Camper & Nicholson and built in 1966 to compete in the Tall Ships Race. The patron of the project was Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. Public donations partly funded construction of the ship, and the Sail Training Association raised about half the needed money.

The vessel was named for Winston Churchill, wartime leader and twice Prime Minister of the United Kingdom; Churchill had died the year before his namesake’s construction. Her rig was deliberately designed to incorporate all the main types of sail. In November 1965, Sir Winston Churchill toppled over onto her starboard side whilst she was being fitted out. All three masts were broken. The accident happened a week before she was due to be launched by HRH Princess Alexandra. In January 1967, she sank at Southampton, Hampshire. On 26 July 1967, she ran aground at Holyhead Harbour, Anglesey but was refloated after four hours. In 1968 a sister ship, Malcolm Miller was launched. Sir Winston Churchill differed from Malcolm Miller in having round topped cabin doors as opposed to square topped doors. In 1976, the vessel took part in a transatlantic race to celebrate the Bicentenary of the United States Declaration of Independence. Sir Winston Churchill entered the 1979 Tall Ships Race with an all-female crew. On 27 July 1981, she ran aground 4 nautical miles (7.4 km) off Great Yarmouth, Norfolk with 60 female trainees on board. In 2000, Sir Winston Churchill was replaced in service by Prince William and sold by her owners, the Tall Ships Youth Trust. Her last voyage for the Tall Ships Youth Trust ended on 2 December 2000 at Portsmouth. Chalk-quarrying was a major industry at Hessle into the 20th century and quarries can still be seen in the west of the town, the largest being the Humber Bridge Country Park, which is a popular tourist attraction. Part of it is known as Little Switzerland.

Gardening
Broccoli: Sprouting Broccoli Green Purple and White Tips on how to grow great vegetables. In this article we are dealing only with the Sprouting Broccoli. As with all Brassica’s a deep well cultivated soil is best. Manured in the previous season if liming is required. A highish pH of 6.7 to 7.0 is prefered. This also prevents Club Root which may well be a problem on more acidic soils. Broccoli has a need for calcium and this is supplied by the lime. Apply a base dressing of fertilizer at planting out time according to analsis. If this has been carried out. If not choose a high Nitrogen fertilizer with an NPK in the proportions of 4:1:2 (parts by percentage - and any multiplies of ). Top dress with Nitro Chalk (calcium ammonium nitrate) during the growing season. Brassicas including Broccoli love it. It is inorganic, very soluble and very quick acting. The chalk is included to balance the acidifying effect of the ammonia. If organic top dressing is prefered then Dried Blood is very good. It is a quickly available source of Nitrogen. It isn’t as concentrated, so heavier dressings will be required. Caterpillars can be a problem! Deal with them by spraying with a Contact (doesn’t enter the plant) Insecticide (not systemic - that is only for non food plants). Regularly if needed. Protect from birds with plastic garden netting or wire netting. Birds can easily strip the small plants to the ground as with all Brassicas. To make an excellent organic High Nitrogen liquid feed which is also high in essential trace elements, fill a hessian sack with an even mix of grass mowings and stable manure. Tie the top and plunge into a butt of water. leave to brew like a pot of tea for a week or two. Stir it about regularly and then when ready dilute to a straw colour and feed the Broccoli with it. This feed produces very healthy plants with dark leaves and therefore a much better crop. Used in combination with Nitro Chalk will be best, as the organic feed does most certainly have an acidifying effect, which needs to be counteracted on most soils. Green Broccoli (also called Calabrese) crops from late Summer and through Autumn. Most varieties produce a large head with few smaller sprouts. The Green Broccoli isn’t very hardy. It can be sown into a Seed Bed from April to June and then transplanted 38cm x 38cm. Transplanted green Broccoli often takes a shock at transplanting time and crops prematurely, producing a useless head. Sowing in situ is a favoured method. Sow a pinch of seed 38cm x 38cm and then thin to one plant later on. This prevents the shock and produces a good crop. A wide range of varieties are available, mostly F1 hybrids. Purple and White Broccoli These may be dealt with together. Sow thinly in a seed bed during April or May and transplant in June or July, 45cm x 45cm apart. Feed as green Broccoli,
To Contact
but stop feeding after late August as the plants will need to harden up ready for winter. Neither produce a large central head, as is usual for green varieties. Instead they produce a large quantity of small side shoots over a period of time. This is more useful for the Amateur. Green varieties have been bred to suit the Farmer because green is favoured commerically. Varieties of white and purple haven’t been developed very much over the years, although a few new varieties including F1 hybrids have started emerging.
Runner Beans:
* Runner Beans need a soil which was dug in autumn, wellmanured, and limed in winter. Pick a sheltered spot where the shade cast by the plants will not be a problem. * Sow seed about 2 inches deep, 9 inches apart, in rows 18 inches apart; push sturdy 8 foot poles/canes firmly in at each seed, and tie a cross bar along the top - the usual “A” frame. Alternatively, sow and pole to make a wigwam shape.
* Loosely tie young plants to supports - they will soon climb naturally. When the plants have reached the top of the frame, pinch out the growing tip. * Keep the bean weed-free; they will need regular watering when the weather is dry and the pods have started forming. * Pick regularly, every couple of days, as soon as the pods reach a reasonable size, before the beans start to swell - 6 to 8 inches long. You will need to remove all the pods which reach this stage, whether you can use them or not. If you allow even a couple of pods to mature, the plants will stop producing new pods. * You will have a glut of beans * freeze some; * salt some (alternate layers of 3 lb of beans, with 1 lb of salt); * or dry the pods, shell and dry the beans, and use as haricots through the winter.

Gardening
Gardening in July Lawns
Keep mowing regularly, except during drought. In hot weather, set the mower at a slightly higher level than normal for early summer. This can prevent the lawn drying in hot weather. Last time to apply a liquid summer lawn fertiliser, especially if a spring feed was not given. A soluble feed and weed product may be useful if there are weeds present in the lawn. Don’t worry unduly about brown patches on the lawn - they will recover quickly when the autumn rains arrive. If a completely green lawn is necessary, then use a sprinkler once a week. Place an open jam-jar on the lawn and leave the sprinkler running for sufficient time for 13mm (0.5in) of water to collect in the bottom of the jar. This is the optimum amount to avoid wasting water, while still wetting the roots sufficiently. New areas of grass, sown or turfed in the spring, will need extra watering to keep them going through their first summer. Lawn growth slows down in late summer. Raise the cutting height slightly as the month progresses, to help the grass better resist the wear it suffers in summer.
Troubleshooting
Inspect any yellow patches on the lawn: if they contain small pinkish-red strands, then you may have red-thread in the lawn. This is a fungal disease, common on light soils after heavy rain, when the nitrogen is washed out of the soil. A nitrogen-rich fertiliser should remedy the situation, and the damage is rarely long-lived. By mid-summer some lawns may be heavily infested by ants. Brushing out the nests on a dry day is the best method of control, and should be done prior to mowing. Isolated weeds can be dug out or spot-treated with a paint-on weedkiller. When
mowing, take time to generally inspect the lawn. You may notice areas that could benefit from more radical renovation in the autumn.
Ponds Top up ponds and water features if necessary - a spray attachment on the hose will aerate the water, and help the fish. Any pumps on water features should be left on during sultry nights, as oxygen levels are lower in such conditions. Remove dead foliage and blooms from waterlilies and other aquatic plants. Cut back any marginal plants that are getting out of hand. Continue to skim blanket and floating weeds.
Troubleshooting
Cover ponds with nets or safety grills in gardens where young children play. These have the additional advantage of preventing leaves falling into the pond. Clean out debris lurking in the depths of the pond. This will improve the water quality and prevent excess debris from promoting the growth of weeds, algae or marginal plantings, and from releasing toxins that could harm fish or wildlife.
Flowers Sowing and planting
Autumn-flowering bulbs, such as autumn crocuses, Colchicum, Sternbergia, Amaryllis and Nerine, can be planted now. Some seeds are best planted just after collection, and others may

Gardening need specific climatic conditions to break dormancy (e.g. some alpines). If unsure, then sow seeds in ‘batches’, i.e. one immediately after collecting, one in winter, and one in the following spring. Cutting back, pruning and dividing Cutting back plants in baskets followed by feeding can encourage new growth and help revive tired displays. Cut back delphiniums and geraniums after the first flush of flowers to encourage a second flowering period. Feed after cutting them back. Deadhead flower borders regularly to prolong flowering. Disbud and dead-head dahlias if growing for large blooms. Leave roses that produce attractive hips. Divide clumps of bearded iris. Plants with a carpet-like growth habit, e.g. some alpines, can become patchy, with central areas dying off. These patches can be infilled with gritty compost, to encourage re-growth.
Propagation
Take cuttings of patio and container plants ready for next year. Pinks and carnations that have become leggy, can be propagated by layering or by cuttings. Propagation can improve the appearance of untidy clumps.
General maintenance
Prop up tall perennials such as lupins, delphiniums and gladioli if staking was neglected earlier in the season. Liquid feed containerised plants and keep well watered in dry spells. Some late-flowering border perennials may benefit from a quickacting feed before they come into bloom, especially if the soil is not very fertile. Mulching borders can help retain moisture, and keep down the weeds - this will save a lot of work. A really thick layer of mulch (5-7.5cm/2-3in all over) works best. Most perennial weeds are best dealt with in the summer when the weeds are in active growth. Digging out often works, but applying a weedkiller can be more practical, particularly for large areas.

Planning ahead
Start collecting seed from plants you want to grow next year, especially annuals such as Calendula, poppy and love-in-a-mist.
Pest and disease watch
Inspect lilies for the scarlet lily beetle whose larvae can strip plants in days. Vine weevils can also be a problem at this time of year. Small holes and tears in new foliage of ornamentals such as Caryopteris, Fuchsia and Dahlia are most likely caused by capsid bug damage. Watch out for aphids (greeenfly and blackfly) on stems and leaves of young shoots. Sudden collapse of apparently healthy clematis, especially the large-flowered cultivars, could indicate clematis wilt. In dry weather powdery mildew can play havoc with plants such as clematis, roses and Lonicera. Look out for and treat black spot on roses and scab on Pyracantha.

It’s a big year for Tribfest – it’s their tenth anniversary! Taking place at Sledmere House from the 18th to the 21st August, it’s a weekend packed full of entertainment and fun. It’s always a fantastic festival, but this year we’re told they’re pulling out all the stops to make it a real occasion to remember. There are even more acts on stage, reaching the dizzy heights of 170 different bands and performers, and this year it’s not just tribute bands but acoustic acts, unsigned bands and comedians too. KCFM has been a proud supporter of Tribfest for many years, and once again Darren Lethem will be hosting throughout on the main stage. He’s particularly looking forward to the World Record Attempt for the biggest ‘Oops Upside Your Head’ dance on the Saturday night – he might just struggle to get up again (age, you see!). All in all, we’re looking forward to a good weekend – we’ll hopefully see you there!

East Stand Views...
Everything changed during our trip to Derby County. After conceding six goals over the two league games there was trepidation about the visit to Pride Park but when Hernandez scored against the run of play everything lifted.. City then dominated the game and with Robertson’s injury time winner we all had Wembley firmly in our sights. Little did we realise that that this third goal would be the decider. Derby battered us from the very first minute in the second leg and there has never been such stressful game in my 40 years of following this team. We just willed the referee to blow his final whistle from the moment they scored their second goal. The tension was unbelievable but thankfully Derby eventually tired and ran out of ideas not least with the arrival of David Meyler to stop them running through our midfield at will. So Wembley here we come.

I had always suspected that the undoubted class of this side would be on display at Wembley. I just did not expect them to get past Derby. Hull City would have secured automatic promotion if the likes of Huddlestone, Hernandez, Elmohamady and Diame performed to a relatively high standard through the season. Too many times they went missing particularly in fixtures with the strugglers and until May you could see no future for an apparently disinterested Elmohamady for instance. If we failed to go up several would be off like a shot and both Elmo and Huddlestone would be seeking deals elsewhere. This either means this performance against Derby was truly young fan loses interest and potentially awful and I would have dropped him if becomes a Sky watching Man Utd we had a quality alternative. We didnt fan or potentially both parent and and he got his opportunity and showed child give up. This is sheer stupidity. everyone including any watching Our so-called marketing experts are Premier League clubs that he is a top throwing away potential customers as performer when he is in the mood. well as long term customers who have bought into Hull City even through So here we go again. Everything is now decades of mediocrity. in flux and potentially a bright new future could be on the horizon. Three An eventful close season is on the cards parties are apparently trying to buy the not least if Steve Bruce remains in club. The big Sky money and kudos of charge. When this column returns we will be a Premier League team however. worldwide publicity is the attraction. The Council have also indicated that Stadium could be developed or sold to prospective owners so hotels etc could be coming to West Park once again. If this helps City become sustainable then why not just as long as its not a case of out of the frying pan and into the fire. Cardiff and Villa being two examples where the foreign ownership went sour. The new owners also need to welcome the fans back to the club.
Words by Woody Mellor
As ever Hull City do things the hard way. Many fans were bitterly disappointed by the promotion campaign being frittered away by April and this combined with new membership scheme brought despair to the Tiger Nation. Fans were in very open revolt to the proposed membership scheme and with an expected play-off campaign failure a downwards slide was being anticipated for Hull City over the coming years. Less fans, many stars jumping ship for the Premier League and less chance of developing a side or raising finance to compete with the likes of Newcastle or even Sheffield Wednesday. But City being City we’ve achieved the unlikely and return to the Premier League for the third time in eight years. 104 years to achieve this for the first time and now a Premier League regular. We have replaced West Brom as the the division’s Yo-Yo club.

FIONA’S FOOD FOR THOUGHT By Fiona Dwyer, broadcast journalist, PR & media consultant, slave to 2 children and a husband.
TALKING AMERICAN
I don’t know about your children but if they watch American programmes on television like mine they start “talking American!” You know what I mean. Vite-a-min instead of Vit-amin, prive-acy instead of priv-acy, mob-ul instead of mo-bile. They also come out with “jelly doughnuts” instead of jam doughnuts. Of course, I now think they’ve just started to say things to wind me up because when I start correcting them they start laughing! Now you should never take yourself too seriously, and I don’t, but what they don’t realise is that I’m perfectly happy to laugh along with the joke because I also know they’re taking it all in!
NATURE’S FINEST
If you haven’t yet managed to get down to the first ever Yorkshire Garden Festival at the Heritage Landscape centre and Seasons café/restaurant in Melton, then you’re missing a treat. I was lucky enough to be asked to be one of the judges and I can tell you I was blown away by the thought and effort that both schools and community projects have put in. The festival, the theme of which is Nature’s Finest, is open until the end of August. The great thing is – you can also be part of the judging process! There’s a special “People’s Award”, judged by members of the public. Just grab a judging slip when you get there and pick your favourites! I found it’s also a great way to be inspired to get on with gardening at home. I’m currently thinking of adding a vegetable plot and a herb garden!
