Women doing what they do best – making friends Friendship website brings women together for fun, friendship, business and adventure It is well known fact that women love to have friends. Just look at the coffee shop culture in Hull… aren’t there lots of women supping their lattes and catching up on the local gossip? And don’t women love their interests? Trips to the cinema, meals out, walks in the countryside, book clubs… women just love to get together and have fun. But we all have dreams, whether it is to play tennis, travel to Africa, or to set up a business. And sometimes we need a companion to share things with. And there are times when we all feel isolated or fed up. Whether divorced, widowed or having moved to a new town, there are times when everyone is in need
of a friendly face. And this is where the new friendship website www.togetherfriends.com can help. Togetherfriends.com is the brainwave of 53 year old mother of three, Helen King. With her children beginning to fly the nest, she suddenly finds that she has more time for herself and a whole list of ambitions that she would like to fulfil. Helen recognises that she would prefer a friend to share her plans with, and came up with the idea of togetherfriends.com. Helen is enthusiastic about the possibilities her new site offers women who want to reach out to others like themselves. “Togetherfriends puts like-minded women in touch with each other, based on age, location and interests. It offers a new concept in friendship. Although there are many clubs out there that women can join, there are few other sites where women are linked to just one other ’friend’ at a time.” Women are already joining togetherfriends.com from East Yorkshire and are keen to meet women just like them from the local area.

MOTIVATIONAL ADVICE FROM AWARD-WINNING BUSINESS COACH PAM FEATHERSTONE
HOW TO GET MOTIVATED
Motivation is the desire to do things. It’s an essential element in setting and attaining goals It can be the difference between waking up early to go for that run or deciding to be a couch potato and lazing around. You can influence your own levels of motivation – it does however take discipline and self-control to start being the person you want to be. Being specific about what you want to achieve is really important. It’s not a guaranteed road to success in achieving your goals but it will help, as will writing it down. I particularly do not like the phrase “just do your best” – in my opinion it can potentially encourage you to more or less accept mediocrity. Evidence from more than 1,000 studies conducted world-wide, by researchers, shows that goals that not only spell out exactly what needs to be accomplished, but that also set the bar for achievement high, result in far superior performance than simply trying to “do your best.” Often, unconsciously, more difficult goals cause you to increase your effort, focus and commitment to the goal and use more effective strategies. It is important to remember the difference between believing

you will succeed, and believing you will succeed easily. You need to make success happen—through careful planning and making the right level of effort. Consider what obstacles you may face and how you will overcome them. Another important factor, is being clear about what your first steps need to be to get started. Focus on the steps you need to take as well as the outcome that you want. Whether you want to be slimmer, more toned, fitter, stronger, tidier, more organised, learn something new, start a hobby, improve at a sport….whatever it is that you want to achieve, you have more desire when you get clarity about your goals and how to achieve them, it will help to motivate you to take action. Don’t wait until you feel like doing something, make a plan and make a start. There are no rules which state we have to feel like it. We simply need to take those first steps and get into action! In the next issue we will look at how to stay motivated. To contact Pam please call her on 01482 227060 or 07540 888016. Alternatively, you can email her at pam@coachpam.co.uk

It’s All About You
Don’t Talk the Talk, Walk the Walk I can hear her as if it were yesterday. I’d be pouring over a page of apparently impossible simultaneous equations or indecipherable poetry and mum would say, “Stop what you’re doing and go for a walk round the garden. You’ll think better after some fresh air.” And, do you know what? As mums so often are about these things; she was absolutely right. This piece of maternal advice has been my companion into adult life and even today if I need to solve a problem or organise my thoughts I go for a little walk. It seems to me that walking is not only good for the body but also good for the soul. Those 10,000 steps we should be taking every day could not only put us on the path to bodily vitality but also on the road to higher planes of thought. Just think, your brisk stroll to collect the Sunday papers could be the catalyst for that Eureka moment to make you a millionaire. Famously, Beethoven created sonatas and symphonies while strolling through the verdant Vienna Woods and the late Steve Jobs (co-founder of Apple) was a great advocate of ‘walking meetings’. Furthermore, in addition to these masters of creativity I am not the only one giving my brain a walk to banish cranial congestion. A quick chat to a few members of a local walking group revealed that if they went for a walk at lunchtime they felt refreshed and worked to a higher standard in the afternoon compared to if they had stayed at their desks.
Another keen walker from the Rose and Crown walking club in Rawcliffe said that there was no doubt in their mind that a walk in the countryside while chatting to likeminded people cleared their heads and helped their thought processes. So is there any actual science to back up this hunch? It would appear so. A recent article published by ‘Business Insider’ highlighted a study conducted by Marily Oppezzo, a Stanford doctoral graduate in educational psychology, and Daniel Schwartz, a professor at Stanford Graduate School of Education which appears to prove that people are more creative when they are walking then when they are seated. Also, during my research I found that ‘Walk and Talk’ therapy is becoming increasingly popular among psychologists and counsellors as a way to encourage clients to problem solve. The idea behind this is that the multi-sensory experience and open spaces allow people to talk freely in a non-confrontational setting. On the other hand, Oppezzo and Schwartz’s study found that people didn’t necessarily have to be walking outside to stimulate creativity as people who walked on treadmills were also more creative than those who were not moving. I guess if you take the study and the anecdotal evidence to its natural conclusion then company directors should be following in the footsteps of Steve Jobs and taking their staff out of the ‘boredroom’ and down to Article: Claire Rick the park for some blue sky thinking.

5 Steps to Become a Better Gardener... Often times, we as gardeners, struggle with the simplest things,” says Ian Ashbridge, director of horticulture at Heritage Landscape & Garden Centre. “I’ve developed five rules to make you a better gardener.” They are:
1. USE WHAT YOU HAVE. We may love that full-sun perennial, but if we garden in the shade, we should look for plants that do well there. You can bend some rules, but finding the right plants for the right space is not guesswork. Do your research.
2. KEEP A JOURNAL. Record things like where a plant came from, dates that you plant, divide and harvest. Write down the problems you run into and the solutions you find. You’ll be surprised how handy this becomes year after year. Many times, problems can be avoided or success can be achieved by reading over what has been done in the past.
To Contact
3. CULTIVATE FRIENDS. One of the most rewarding parts of gardening is the social aspect. Share your plants. Perennials love to be divided; this recharges and invigorates the plants. Do you have a neighbour that always raves about a plant in your garden? Share a piece. Get involved in your local gardening club. Most of my favourite plants have come to me as gifts from family, friends and colleagues. I enjoy giving too. 4. MULCH. Top-dressing with good mulch improves gardens. It’s a scientific fact. Mulched soils stay cooler in the summer and mulch helps regulate swings in moisture. Mulch insulates plants in the winter and regulates soil temperatures better then un-mulched ground. I like to use a composted hardwood bark. As mulch breaks down, nutrients become available to your plants and the microbiology of the soil improves. 5. SPEND TIME IN YOUR GARDEN. Enjoy the space you’ve created. When we spend time in the garden with our hands in the soil and our knees on the ground, something special happens. We connect with our surroundings in a way that can’t happen through a window. This familiar adage is true: The best fertilizer is the shadow of the gardener.

House & Garden
Gardening in June Along with all the flourish and splendour this month, weeds are thriving too, so keep on top of the situation; hoe on warm days and leave them on the surface to wither and die in the sun. Another constant task around the garden at this time of year is deadheading - remove spent flowers from containers, pots, hanging baskets, beds and borders and feed them all occasionally with liquid feed. Deadheading diverts energy from producing seed into producing new flowers.....so is a good thing all round. Theoretically we should be home and dry now weather-wise, but be prepared Brownie-style in case of a late frost - keep vulnerable plants and new shoots protected at night if frost is forecast and don’t be tempted to put out your really tender plants until the middle of the month unless the weather changes dramatically. If it’s dry, attack ground elder, lords and ladies and the like with systemic weed killer painted onto the leaves and trail tips of bindweed into jam jars full of the same. Remember systemic weed killers are indiscriminate and will kill anything they contact. Water is a precious commodity – instigate good practices such as using kitchen and bath water (as long as it is neither too dirty, greasy nor full of detergent) for watering, collect rainwater and investigate ways to recycle water for your irrigation. Avoid using
tap water, however, for lime-hating plants such as camellias - they will not thank you for it! Automatic watering systems are economical with water, as well as convenient, so consider installing one sooner rather than later. Watering is essential once the weather is drier and warmer water thoroughly once or twice a week rather than little and often (containers and hanging baskets need watering every day and sometimes even twice a day if it is hot and windy) - this encourages plants to put down roots in search of water rather than coming up to the surface. For large shrubs or trees, leave a hose trickling around the base for an hour - hedges are best watered with a trickle hose (a length of old hose punctured with little holes) left running for an hour or so. The key to successful planting, whether it be a shrub, tree, perennial or bedding plant is to water in well. Beforehand, soak the rootball in a bucket until no air bubbles come to the surface, dig the planting hole, fill with water and allow to drain away. Place the plant in the hole, fill with soil, firm gently and water with a watering can - this will give the plant a huge advantage over one planted with a dry rootball in a dry hole and watered only on the surface. Carry on removing moss and weeds from paths, terraces and drives and keep an eye out for pests around the garden. Try to keep the use of chemical controls to a minimum - they may kill off pests, but they also kill off the beneficial insects that prey on them such as ladybirds and hoverfly larvae.

High-Fibre Diets … What Are They and Are They Beneficial?
Fibre is a substance found only in plants and plant products, meaning fruits and vegetables, but not in meat or dairy products. A high-fibre diet can be very beneficial for you in many different ways. One reason is that fibre doesn’t break down and get absorbed into the system the way other nutritional elements are absorbed, so it makes you feel full. Those who follow a diet or eating plan high in fibre typically eat less overall, and have fewer cravings since they feel full longer. Fibre also binds to other foods and helps them to move along the digestive tract, so you have fewer problems with constipation when you eat lots of fibre. You also absorb more nutrients since foods break down more readily, so they’re absorbed in your system more readily.

Cleaning up That Wardrobe - How to do It Maybe you have three closets you consider your “wardrobe,” only you haven’t seen anything come out of that one for a while. Or maybe you’re just tired of the same old things you can’t wear anymore and want a change of scenery. If so, try going for a wardrobe clean-up. To many this seems like a daunting task that could easily take forever and never get finished. Luckily, there are ways to get it done and still make it fun – it just takes the know-how. Find a Friend Finding a friend is the best way to both make the wardrobe cleaning fun and keep you grounded. If you’ve had a cat sweater since high school, can’t fit into it anymore and it itches you like crazy but you want to keep it, your friend/family member can talk you down from that fashion-leery ledge. Friends can also help by taking away what you don’t want or can’t fit into anymore, so inviting over a few of them may not be such a bad idea. If you’re embarrassed by what’s in your closet, take a look at theirs – chances are you have nothing to be embarrassed about. Make it Fun Making it fun is really the only way to get through the nightmare of cleaning out your wardrobe. After you invite your friend or friends, order lots of tasty takeout and maybe even set up a dressing area for everyone to try old things on, with a designated space for each friend’s “keep” pile and
the mutual throw out pile. Don’t allow your keep pile to get higher than your throw-away pile! Try playing some fun music and talking about old sentimental pieces so you can easily let them go. Donate the Old One good way to make the wardrobe cleaning process more enjoyable is to give back to your community by donating the stuff none of you want anymore. Try calling around to friends or family that may need the clothes or just dropping them anonymously at a homeless or domestic violence shelter. Doing this can bring you a peace of mind and a better excuse to let go of the old – it’s all going for a good cause, after all, and it’s a eco-friendly way to give back to the environment by not allowing the clothes to end up in a landfill. In with the New! Now that you’ve narrowed your wardrobe down to what should be a slim amount of clothing, you can technically use this as an excuse to go shopping! Try picking out five/six pieces from your new improved wardrobe and buying classic, versatile pieces to go with them and others for several usable looks for different occasions. A girl’s shopping is never done, and even if you end up keeping or re-discovering several pieces, you could always shop for accessories! Those don’t take up closet space, do they? And they can also lend a versatility and classy look to your new, improved wardrobe after all your hard work!

The UK’s most popular tourist destinations include Devon and Cornwall, the Lake District, the Yorkshire Dales, East Anglia and Scotland.

In Scotland you could rent a picturesque cottage, take a whisky tour, ride a steam train on the West Highland Line or take a tour of Mull to see Minke whales, otters, seals and porpoises. You can even rent a Downton Abbey-style historic house sleeping 6 – 60 people. Perfect for birthdays or anniversaries. Budgeting tips for carers When you become a carer your finances are likely to be affected by your situation. If you have had to give up work then your finances may become quite tight and you may rely on income from benefits. Making sure that you are organised with your finances is a great way to keep on top of your outgoings. Read more about controlling your personal and household finances. Budgeting can be difficult to face at times. However, once you’ve outlined a suitable budget you will have a better idea of your finances. It will help you to work out what needs to go where and when. Ultimately, budgeting can put you in control of your finances. It’s a good idea to begin with your monthly outgoings. Start with an average of how much you spend on food shopping and priority payments such as household bills and repayments on loans or credit cards. It might be scary, but it’s important that you’re honest with yourself about what you spend. You could use this to work out what you spend in an average week. Once you’ve listed how much you spend, you can then work out your monthly or weekly income in your household. On this list you should include any wages or benefits you receive. Once you’ve made this list you can subtract what you need to spend from your incomings. If you have money left over, you can decide whether to save it, or how you will use it. If you have no money left over or don’t have enough money coming in to cover your expenditure, you will need to have a look at what you spend in more detail, and take some tough decisions. Caring for someone can put a financial strain on you. As a carer, you may have to reduce your working hours or give up work altogether, and as a result more than half of carers have been, or are, in debt. The Money Advice Service’s financial Health check tool is free, confidential, and can help you make the most of your money by answering a few simple questions. If you have found yourself in debt you can get free, impartial and confidential advice from the National Debtline or the Citizens Advice Bureau, which also offers face-to-face appointments. The official online source of government information on benefits is http://www.gov.uk/

The Psychology of Colours
Change the colour of your room and improve your mood. Much like music, colour can alter your mood and behavior on a subconscious yet profound level — so profound, in fact, that researchers have spent years studying how the human brain responds to specific hues in various social settings. When it comes to your home, color may beat decor in terms of setting the vibe from room to room. So read on, pick your paint, and (happily, excitedly, or peacefully) kiss bare white walls goodbye.
Reds Aside from Big’s (of Sex and the City fame) infamous blood red bedroom accent wall, red paint is usually found in common areas — kitchens, living rooms, and most frequently, dining rooms — if at all. Seeing the stimulating colour has been linked to increased pulse rate, heart rate, and blood pressure, which explains why it’s often regarded as the colour of love, sex, and aggression. (Studies have shown that men are more attracted to women wearing red dresses versus other colours.) While the shade encourages socializing and bonding, making it a great fit for gathering spots, it may also prompt you to eat more. Darker, subdued tones (oxblood, for example) could potentially reduce those negative effects.
Oranges Fabulous for a home office (if you’re lucky enough to have one), orange is invigorating by day and cozy by night. A blend of two rousing colours, orange works well in social areas, especially foyers where people tend to mingle. But you may want to skip it in restful spaces, like your bedroom, unless it’s in small doses.
Yellows If you think about what is yellow — the sun, light bulbs, summertime daffodils — it makes sense that yellow is an energizing colour. The warm, welcoming shade stimulates the nervous system and promotes creativity — but proceed with caution. Studies have shown it can cause overstimulation, leading to feelings of anxiety, frustration, and anger. An accent wall in a pale Post-It-note hue in your kitchen or living room could be the perfect balance.

I cannot believe that I am actually going to write an article about Hull City in an FA Cup Final and set to begin an adventure in European football. I have supported this club since 1976 and for most of this time a ‘cup run’ lasted one or two matches and our greatest glory was leading Liverpool 2-1 at half-time in an FA Cup 5th round defeat in 1989. We are used to defeats to lesser clubs such as Hednesford Town. We do not reach a Cup Final. It’s not what we do! Over many seasons we have attracted 5000 fans to matches at Boothferry Park but now we will play a game with a worldwide audience of 500 million!.
East Stand Views...
Unbelievable as it sounds we will be playing Arsenal on May 17th in our third Wembley appearance in six years. It has taken 84 years to reach our second semi-final and 110 years to reach a final. Who knows we may even win our first major trophy as well. Who expected Sunderland to defeat Leeds in 1973, Southampton to defeat Man Utd in 1976, Wimbledon to defeat Liverpool in 1988 and Wigan to defeat Manchester City last year? It can be done. Could this be the Year of the Tiger?
If Arsenal play with the same fear as displayed in their semi-final then they are beatable. Who knows a long range shot from Huddlestone or a Curtis Davies header? There always used to be unknown heroes back in the days when the FA Cup Final meant much more to football fans. Bobby Stokes, Roger Osborne and Lawrie Sanchez are three relatively unknown players who became part of Wembley folklore for their goals. Maybe George Boyd will add a Wembley winner to his footballing fairytale, maybe David Meyler, maybe Paul McShane, if he’s
fit, or even Maynor Figueroa who has a dramatic fall from grace over the past few games and missed out on the final last year. Whatever happens we are about to witness something which we never expected to happen. We will enjoy it. Hull City will be known to the football audience throughout the globe. Most people in Britain will be watching or at least aware of the match and the vast majority of people within Hull and East Yorkshire will be proudly supporting
their local football team in the biggest domestic game of the year. New fans can be attracted from this game both within the Humber and abroad. Surely we can also attract a better sponsorship deal and maybe investors from this global coverage. Who needs a name change to get noticed? Not only do we have a Cup Final lined up but also Europa league football. . Our season could begin in early August but provided we reach the group stages Hull City will be potentially competing against cup winners or top four teams from across Europe. This may mean regular Thursday evening fixtures but I’m sure we’ll cope. This City and club will be on a European stage. Wouldn’t it be good if the Council could help us to expand the stadium. I won’t hold my breath on that one. Even if we win the Cup I don’t anticipate an open top bus parade and City Hall balcony appearance to be arranged between our owners and the council. If only people could work together now Hull will be gaining so much publicity via our football team. I cannot conclude this article without
mentioning Steve Bruce. He is the greatest manager that this club has had, automatic promotion, Premier League safety, FA Cup Final and now European football. No other manager has achieved this and until recent games we were sitting comfortably in mid table of one of Europe’s best leagues. Let’s hope a new contract can be sorted as the players sign for him and play for him rather than Hull City alone. Take Bruce out of the equation then maybe it would just be mercenaries tempted by high wages as before. His
achievements have been buried under the ongoing name change saga and we hope he won’t be tempted by the likes of Newcastle or even old club Norwich over the coming weeks. We hope the name change saga comes to an end and Hull City can rebuild for the new season and European campaign. We are yet to see the conclusion of this saga. Because HullMag prints on FA Cup weekend by the time you read this we will either be FA Cup Winners or runners -up, either way - I know that the team and fans will do us proud on the day. We are living the dream!
Words by Joe ‘Woody’ Mellor

Help When You Need It
Number Crunching 25 is the average number of sites logged into daily. 73% of people use the same password. 6 characters are used in the average password. 3 minutes taken to crack an average password.
When I saw these statistics I was shocked! Are you among them? If you are then like me, you’d have had a worrying moment or two when the Heartbleed vulnerability hit the news recently. This was a flaw in the Internet Security systems that could permit the removal of confidential data from what we once considered to be secure sites. Frightening Stuff. Frankly, when you have a whole bunch of things to remember it seems easier to use one or two passwords - with the odd variation or two. Clearly that isn’t enough anymore – The numbers tell us we need to be more careful and one of the ways to do this is to have a different password for every site. Ideally each of your passwords should be more than 8 characters long and made up of a combination of letters, numbers and punctuation characters – in mixed lower and upper case. In other words each password will be something no human being could hope to remember for longer than 2 minutes. Suddenly jane1964 has become t7V1G9rqnHw1 – creating the memory nightmare we had hoped to avoid! Writing them all down somewhere safe is one way to keep track of them – but how about when you can’t get to the list – or you lose the list?? For years now I’ve used a password manager program to take care of my entire online password collection. LastPass [www. lastpass.com] stores all my many passwords behind secure encryption and I only have to remember one single password to gain access to all the others. This simple system is available in both free and paid versions (the paid version, which offers extended coverage on tablets and phone apps, only costs £8 a year). We all have programs we use every day that are like our right arm – we’d be lost without them - for me LastPass is one of those must have’s. I think it’s worth ten times the money and once you’ve started using it, I’m sure you’ll agree with me! The time and frustration savings alone are incredible for anyone who uses their computer on a regular basis. Don’t be another password statistic – give it a try today! PS I never receive fees or commission from any of the products mentioned in this column – They are just my own tried and tested personal recommendations. LOCAL NEWS
Redeveloping Hull
These are exciting times for the city of Hull. For so many years we were regarded as a northern outpost you never visited or worse still when the media publicised the ‘Crap Town’ story ten years ago. We are now on the rise with the eventual announcement of Siemens, the further associated developments of Green Port Hull, electrified rail line, Castle Street improvements and walkway to the Marina, Hull City at the FA Cup Final and of course the announcement as 2017 UK City of Culture. We are even being visited by the same southern media who used to throw derogatory comments our way and the Sunday Telegraph recently ran a feature extolling the virtues of the city. Once they had a reason to visit and opened there eyes they discover that it’s not actually that bad a place. Most of us living here knew this already but who ever used to take note of what was said in Hull! No one was too bothered about our 2007 floods, for instance, but that’s another long story. Now is the time to be ready for 2017 and the influx of thousands of visitors and already Hull City council have announced that millions will be spent sprucing up the city. This will include footpaths, gardens and general appearance of the city centre. This should also include work to remove some of the eyesores blighting the city and there are quite a few. There were a range of high profile development proposals prior to the recession and this is part of the problem. Some of these derelict areas were bought up to create hotels, flats or even casinos and ten years on some of these still remain boarded up vandalised properties in prime locations. Many of these plans can still be found in a Hull and Humber thread on the website http://www.skyscrapercity.com. Who knows, with the regeneration which the renewables industry could bring to the city many of these projects may actually go forward, we are also apparently coming out of recession, though Hull was usually five years behind the rest of the country. This may have changed now as we are now believed to become the ‘new Aberdeen’ on the back the renewables investments. Hopefully there will be investment in flats, shops, bars, hotels and the fruit market for both newcomers and increasingly employed and affluent residents Here are some of the eyesores and areas where something needs to be done. If it just means demolition pending someone coming in afterwards then get on with it. We’ve waited too long for plans to materialise. Thank God we finally replaced the bus station before the recession hit. New York Hotel. One of the first things you see out of Paragon Station and already a great sight for visiting Premier League football fans. This has been empty for years and now in an appalling state. Hopefully

the Council will make a compulsory purchase and demolish during the autumn. Let’s hope!? Edwin Davis building. This old department store has been empty for decades, slap bang in the city centre and like the nearby Co-Op /Romeos nightclub building this a massive empty shell. There have been many plans but nothing ever happens. Can we finally remove something that is a reminder of the 1980’s recession? This wouldn’t be left so long in other cities. Earl de Grey – This pub is on the main A63 tributary through the city, faces the Marina and has been boarded up for years. This is another product of stalled redevelopment. The Quay West expansion of Princes Quay hasn’t happened so should it just be demolished until something is actually done to this area? Beverley Road. I believe money is to be allocated to tidy up this area as it is getting worse by the year. This is one of the major roads through the city and becoming embarrassing. The recession has had an influence through the boarded up shops and businesses and general lack of investment by landlords. No idea what needs to be done, compulsory purchase and eventual new investment in the area? Losing thousands of students to Lincoln University didn’t exactly help either.

There are so many other areas to consider such as Whitefriargate, the Lord Line Building, Kingston House, Rank Hovis Mill and The Cornmill Hotel but the last thing to mention is the Street Art/Fountain on Spring Bank Corner. This arrived over ten years ago and it is frankly awful. Surely we could have something better to replace this. I’d personally have a thirty foot statue of Dean Windass hitting his volley at Wembley in 2008. This did actually put Hull on the International stage! Surely something better can replace this ‘work of art’ by 2017. Words & Photography by Chris Warkup

FIONA’S FOOD FOR THOUGHT By Fiona Dwyer, broadcast journalist, PR & media consultant, slave to 2 children and a husband. CELEBRATING WOMEN OF ACHIEVEMENT
I’m absolutely delighted to have been invited again to host this year’s Women of Achievement Awards in Hull. Organised by Women in Business, the whole idea is to celebrate women in the public, private and voluntary sector who have gone above and beyond the norm to achieve their goals whilst inspiring others to fulfil their own potential. We will also be hearing from the exceptionally brave Katie Piper, who has undergone more than 100 operations to rebuild her face after she was badly disfigured in an acid attack in 2008. She’s now a TV presenter, best selling author, columnist and Founder of the Katie Piper foundation, as well as becoming a new mum earlier this year. Truly inspirational! Check out www. womeninbusinesshull.co.uk to find out more information about the different categories, how to enter yourself or nominate an amazing woman you know. The ceremony takes places on Friday 28th November at the Willerby Grange Park Hotel. It’s always a fantastic and humbling event, so book your ticket early because places sell out fast! HOLIDAYS DURING TERM TIME
This is an increasingly hot topic at this time of year and it can be very difficult, as a parent, to make the right call. Of course, the majority of us agree that children should be in school during term time and it’s not a good option to take them out of the classroom. But with the dramatically increasing number of parents being fined for doing exactly that, something surely has to change. High prices of holidays during school breaks is one of the main contributing factors, so surely we, and the government, should be putting more pressure on the greedy holiday companies who double and triple their prices as soon as school breaks up. Furthermore, it will be interesting to see what changes, if any, they will make to pricing if more schools start to use their new powers and set their own term dates. ON-LINE SHOPS – GREAT OR ANNOYING?
On-line shopping seems to be great – and I’m always amazed when it works and my package gets delivered or I’ve reserved it and picked it up in store! I always think “This is definitely the way to shop. I must do that more often!” But do I? No I don’t! I don’t know why that is, but I think I may have to change my habits. It saves so much time and takes a lot of the stress out of shopping. Although if you’re waiting for something and it doesn’t arrive on time, what then? And what about buying clothes online? I’ve done it for the children because I know what size to buy, but not for myself. I like to try things on to see how they fit and it just sounds like too much of a hassle to start ordering different sizes and sending the wrong one back. Is that lazy? Am I missing something? I probably am. Perhaps I’ll experiment! Saying that, I’m slightly concerned that I might enjoy shopping for clothes online much more than my credit card will!
