MOTIVATIONAL ADVICE FROM AWARD-WINNING BUSINESS COACH PAM FEATHERSTONE

HOW TO MAKE YOUR PLANS & GOALS HAPPEN

It’s these first steps that are vital, these first steps that will give you the motivation to not only get started but to follow through and complete your goal.

In the last HullMag talked about the importance of planning, but once you’ve decided what you want or need to do, how do actually go about putting those plans into action? It’s really important to start with the end goal in mind, then work backwards over what needs to be done. Mark down in a diary (or make a special chart for your chosen goal) the date you want to have dropped a dress size by, when you want to be able to run 10 miles without killing yourself or have saved enough to go on holiday. You may want to spend more quality time with your family. Whatever it is, make sure you have complete clarity about what you want, then break it down into small, achievable steps. In your diary, or on your chart, write down exactly what you need to do to achieve your goal, whether that’s day-by-day or week-byweek. If you write it down, like an appointment or a “Must do today” then you’re less likely to put it off until another day.

Remember – small steps make huge differences which can last a lifetime. Focus on how fantastic you will feel when you’ve achieved what you set out to do! So what are you going to plan today?! House & Home Over 15,000 people have visited the When War Hit Home: Hull and the First World War exhibition since it opened on 19 July, at Ferens Art Gallery. The popular and well recieved exhibition is still averaging over 300 visitors each weekend. The exhibition has received great comments from visitors: “It makes me feel like I can re-live the war through the eyes of those who were in it” “Very moving and provides a space to reflect” “Closer to the events – the local photos, stories and documents make it more immediate. Best WW1 exhibit I’ve seen this year.” The exhibition is funded by Arts Council England and is part of the Joining Up the Humber project that brings together museums across Hull, the East Riding and North Lincolnshire. Susan Capes, Assistant Curator said: “We are delighted with how popular the exhibition has been and how much the personal stories that are portrayed have touched those that have visited. The experiences of so many local people during this era have clearly engaged people and enabled them to reflect on the huge impact that the First World War had on Hull.”

Alongside the exhibition, a large collage called ‘Waves’, by local artist Judy Galloway, is featuring in the Centre Court at the Ferens Art Gallery. It displays photos of many local men who served in the First World War and will be on display until January when the War Hit Home exhibition closes.

007 - James Bond

007 in East Yorkshire Shaken but never stirred -

Hull Mag talks to Chris Oaten about his biggest tribute shoot to date… James Bond! HM: Why James Bond? James Bond is the longest running and most successful franchise in film history. This year marks the 50th Anniversary of Goldfinger so I thought it would be great to mark the occasion with my own photographic tribute to this British icon. What Sherlock Holmes is to fiction, James Bond is to cinema. HM: Where do you begin in putting together a photographic tribute? Firstly I research. It takes around 2 months to research and style a shoot, making sure that every detail is as accurate as possible. Then through advertising on networking sites I contact people who i feel would fit the profile. Not all the people who were modelling for this shoot are actual models, I came across Steve Reed on Facebook who is a musician and felt he would look great as James Bond.

HM: How about the location? Bond sets are all about scale. Yes they are so I knew I needed a fantastic backdrop. I mentioned this to my friend Graham Monkman who suggested The Hull Aero Club in Leven, who have an array of planes, microlights and helicopters, how very Bond I thought. So I contacted Peter Spencer at the club who was extremely helpful and welcoming to everyone who took part. HM: So, you have Bond, the cars and location, so how did you find your Bond girls? Tony Conroy’s daughter, Chloe, played Sylvia Trench in the famous red dress. Sylvia features in the very first scene with Sean Connery as James Bond in Dr No. Pussy Galore was played by Sarah Brodie who is the wife to Christian Brodie, who kindly styled all the hair with his assistant Cassie Bishop. Christian also recommended Abigail Lee who is a model and modelled brilliantly as Honey Ryder and Jill Masterson sprayed in gold. Hayley Young (SFX) and Maja (H Make-Up) the 2 make up artists, painted Abigail from head to toe in gold paint, thankfully this gold paint is meant to be on the skin so was harmless, unlike the paint they used on Shirley Eaton in Goldfinger in the 1960’s.

HM: So you found your Bond, how did you find the cars, especially the Aston Martin? I contacted Marc Mason at Chauffeur Luxury who recommended Tony Conroy from Aston Weddings Cars To You. Tony was very happy to help with this venture and even asked if I would be interested in his daughter being a Bond girl. The Aston Martin used in this shoot is a DB9 Volante in black, Daniel Craig drove a DB9 in Casino Royale. The BMW Z3 was brought to the shoot by my best mate Pete Street, the same one used by Pierce Brosnan in Goldeneye. I kept thinking, I bet Pete would love his car to have all the gadgets that were supplied by Q in Bond’s car! The third car was a Bentley Arnage T Mulliner, supplied by Len Winterbottom at A1 Tyre Services. In the Bond novels, Casino Royale and Moonraker, James drives one of the last 4.5 litre Bentleys with Supercharger, so I felt it would be great to have this stunning car in the shoot.

007 - James Bond HM: The Bond girls looked stunning in their dresses, where did you find these? There is a boutique on Chanterlands Avenue called Bonita, which is owned by Cecilia Pizarro Compillay. Cecilia made all the stunning dresses for this shoot. She researched the red dress and created a stunning piece which Chloe is now the proud owner of as she couldn’t give it back, so she now has a very early Christmas present from her parents. Cecilia also made a top which was based on the top worn by Pussy Galore in Goldfinger. This was worn by Sarah as Pussy challenging Bond with a gun in the photos.

watch with the correct woven strap as used in Goldfinger and Thunderball.

HM: Were there any hiccups in making this shoot as accurate as possible? Luckily no. I own a vintage 1960’s Cyril Castle suit which was a good starting point to develop the look. This suit is very similar to the one worn by Sean Connery in Goldfinger. My suit was owned by the actor Richard Todd OBE and I acquired it through an auction when he passed away. Richard Todd was Ian Fleming’s first choice for Bond, so there is a cool connection to the suit worn by Steve for this shoot. Through intensive research I wanted to make sure I could get this tribute as accurate as possible, even down to the shirt he wore. The cocktail cuff shirt was made famous by Sean Connery wearing this as Bond, which was made by Anthony Sinclair. I spoke to David Mason, from Anthony Sinclair, who kindly supplied me with this shirt to complete the look. HM: The watches, what made you choose the ones you used? Bond has used many brands of watches, however I have always loved the 1960’s Omega Chronostop Geneve. Bond began to wear Omega in the 1990’s, however, I wanted to connect Bond’s look with a 60’s style of Omega watch. I then used a divers

HM: Why do you put together these tribute shoots? Out of pure love for the subject and all the fond memories I have of watching these films. It is also a fantastic way of meeting new creative people. This tribute will be sent to every James Bond site across the globe, where people with the same passion and love for Bond will be able to enjoy these photos, the styling and all the geeky knowledge to make this a great insight into this British icon. HM: Where can people see this James Bond tribute? For more information and to see the James Bond tribute shoot - www.otenphotography. co.uk/jamesbond HM: So what’s next for you? I’m busy promoting my Red Riding Hull 2015 Calendar, which is available from Hull stores of W H Smith, Waterstones, Hull Box Office, Chanterlands Post Office and Panache. HM: Good luck with the calendar and thank you for talking to us.

Bags of Success for ClaireaBella

When it comes to local stories about inspirational people who have shown true Yorkshire determination and grit to launch their business and suceed there are many famous local people who spring to mind, however, there may be one Hull girl that is not that widely known...

ClaireaBella was born from massively humble beginnings. She was born as a character based on Claire (the founder) – albeit how she wished she could look everyday, but real life, 5 children and 4 dogs doesn’t allow her to. The story below is written by Claire about her fight and struggle to set up and start the ever popular brand. “The story starts with a trip to Paris with my then boyfriend, now husband Mr ClaireaBella (Jon). We had a drawing done by an artist in Place du Tertre, near to the bottom of the Sacre Coeur. I loved the way the artist captured my eyes. I grew up as a child with my mum singing “bright eyes” to me from water ship down (an old film favourite), the way he caught my eyes on paper was a true representation and I loved them. We returned home from the trip and I immediately wall mounted the drawing. I looked at it every day and it made me smile and still does. After a while I said to Jon that I would love to carry that drawing of my eyes with me everywhere, which gave me the idea to draw them onto a bag and build a simple character around those eyes so I painted my first jute bag and I loved it! At the time I was an officer with Humberside Police and turned to one of my colleagues (and also one of my best friends) and asked her opinion. God love her – she’s a brutally honest girl that always gives an honest opinion, good or bad. She is always the one person whom I go to if I want a real truthful opinion on anything. With baited breath I waited… She loved it and dragged me straight down to the staff canteen with it saying I could make some extra money making them. It was there; in the police canteen that I received my first two bag orders! Albeit elated, and somewhat proud, I was stressing! I didn’t have the money in my bank account to buy blank bags, or replace the paint I’d used to make my own bag. So, I called my mum who offered to lend me the money to buy the materials I needed to make these bags. Once I had provided my first customers with their bags they were so pleased that they immediately showed off their new bags to other members of staff, friends and family. To my continued amazement, orders came flooding in. I bought a money box which you have to

smash to get any cash out, and the money from every bag I sold went into it in the hope of being able to afford a deposit one day for a holiday for my family. In March 2011 I took to Social Media website Twitter to start tweeting about my bags, as I thought it could be a useful tool to share my designs to the world. No one had seen anything like it before. I was the Original and at that time, the only one on Twitter designing personalised character bags. Chloe Simms spotted them from hit TV Show – The Only Way is Essex and tweeted me! I nearly had heart failure! I was so shocked and happy all in the space of a minute. Not long after I had sent Chloe Simms her bag, Chloe kindly texted me, telling me to go buy The Daily Star newspaper as she had been “papped” with her ClaireaBella bag. As I opened the paper I couldn’t believe my eyes, there she was with the bag I created in a national newspaper with Amy Childs discussing it in her column. I was bowled over! A few days later Chloe was spotted in series 2 of TOWIE with her bag, my twitter timeline went crazy! Jon had not long since built a website and orders were now coming in thick and fast until we had to stop taking them as there were in excess of 100 bag orders to make on my desk (my desk was actually my dining room table). The stress and pressure I was under was immense! I was working a 26 hour week with the Police, plus looking after my amazing children, house, dogs etc and now bag orders! I sat on our stairs and sobbed! Never in my wildest dreams did I envisage it would evolve into what it had. It moved so quick, by May 2011 all the TOWIE cast had their own ClaireaBella bags and they were all over the national press. Then the stars of Coronation Street, Made in Chelsea, Eastenders, Geordie Shore and celebs from all walks of life, all cottoned onto the bags, loved them, wanted them, and I was just flabbergasted. In June 2011 we got in contact with an online gift brand called

ToxicFox.co.uk with a view to expanding the ClaireaBella range. We collaborated with them making Hoodies and T-Shirts at the time. They Page 28 flew off the shelves too, just like the bags! We have a beautiful partnership that grows new products and designs all the time. In November 2011 the team at ToxicFox.co.uk came up with an idea. It frightened me at first as the aBella character is my baby! I painted her alone! Drew her alone! I had no help! She was the work of my hands only. ToxicFox.co.uk came up with the idea of ClaireaBella Classic bags! Bags painted by qualified artists, that would be trained to my style and whom I would oversee. The key though would be that every aBella (character) design would still be created by me. The ClaireaBella Classic range would mean that I could make my designs available to more of my customers who were unable to access a ClaireaBella Bag although they followed me closely on Twitter and regularly checked my website. I really wanted to give them something back but there are only 24 hours in the day and was genuinely struggling. I slept on it… Slept a bit more on it… Then said let’s give it a go! The artists trained and worked so hard, until they got it spot on. They did an amazing job, I was so so proud. The Classics launched in Nov/Dec 2011 and are stronger than ever. In December 2011 we had to have a small extension built onto our family home to accommodate my work with the bags, and also for Jon with administration etc. ToxicFox.co.uk also have had to move to other premises that can hold the demand for my bags there also. Crazy!

In April 2012 we launched the ClaireaBella brand in the USA in partnership with ToxicFox.com and went out to New York. I met with 18 different editors from different glossy mags! Walking into “GLAMOUR” magazines HQ and seeing the big pink Glamour sign buckled my knees slightly, is this real? Is this happening? A simple idea to make a little bit of extra money for my family had grown into a fashion phenomenon. I always say “never in my wildest dreams”. People ask what’s been the highlight? Honestly, for me, being able to buy my children’s school uniform and take them out for tea every so often. That is my highlight. Being able to give my children the best you can give every day is all I have ever dreamed. My journey has been an amazing rollercoaster of emotions. I never dared dream that in such a short space of time I could have achieved so much. Throughout the highs and the lows – I have been fortunate to have met with, spoken to and ‘tweeted’ some of the most amazing people who are more than fans of my designs. They are honestly like family. Every ClaireaBella product is made to reflect all of my beautiful and amazing customers and I hope that every customer, follower and fan of ClaireaBella knows that I will be forever grateful for the love and support they have shown. You have all helped make my dreams come true. Thank You.”

“A landlords dream” Hull based clearance furniture business making life easy for the regions landlords and property management agencies.

One of the biggest headaches for landlords and property management companies, is searching for quality home furniture at reasonable prices. Time is a premium for these businesses, so any company that offer a comprehensive one stop service are going to be popular in this industry. Octagon Property Group owner Paul Fielder has recently fitted out one of his properties, a city centre 2 bedroom apartment and he’s finally found that furniture company.

“I didn’t have to lift a finger. It was delivered, taken to each room and assembled in place.” Clearance Zone Direct offer a fully managed service for landlords, from sourcing the right products, to delivering them to a room of choice and assembling them in place so the owner of the property doesn’t have to do anything. Paul added “They even offered a discount because I was buying more then 6 or 7 items, which I couldn’t believe. The November Garden

Gardening

As the first winter frosts nip the air, there are still a few jobs to be done before putting the garden to bed Not so slowly now, the remains of the last season are making their way back to earth. Cast your eye up and newly bare branches reveal the sky while, at our feet, the leaves are browning. These are the first few weeks of winter and I use my time carefully, letting the last of the autumn run its course and targeting energies to set things up for the months ahead. RAKE’S PROGRESS Only collect leaves where absolutely necessary. Don’t leave them too long on the lawns or they will kill the grass underneath. Where they have fallen in the beds and have not drifted too deeply, leave the earthworms to pull them into their burrows and to rot on the surface. This is not laziness but necessary to keep the cycle replenished. However, where leaves have drifted deeply or are smothering smaller plants or silver Mediterranean herbs and perennials, clear to keep the plants dry and airy. Sweeping leaves off paths and terraces is all you need to keep the garden looking cared for and covers for a wealth of disorder in the beds. PERENNIAL QUESTION If you are tidy-minded, it might go against the grain to leave the perennials standing, but in a month’s time you will find that certain plants have made fine winter skeletons and can be left until February or March. Fennel and miscanthus,

verbena and teasel make good hibernacula for beneficial insects and their seed keeps the birds going in the cold periods as well as providing winter interest. TOP OF THE HEAP If you have the room, create a separate leaf heap rather than simply adding leaves to compost, as leaf mould is a luxury soil improver if you are growing lilies in pots. The fibrous nature of leaf mould retains moisture and enables free drainage, which means it also makes a fine mulch for woodland treasures such as trillium or wood anemone. A leaf heap can easily be constructed using chicken wire and posts, or you can bag your leaves and put them in an out-ofthe-way corner. Make sure you puncture the bags to prevent them from becoming anaerobic, as the bacteria that turn them to leaf mould need air to flourish. A leaf heap should take a year to rot down so empty now to make way for this year’s fall.

Gardening LOVE ME TENDER In the colder parts of the country, first frosts will have blackened the dahlias. If you haven’t done so already, move tender perennials into the shelter of a cool greenhouse, frame or garage and water less to bring on a state of semi dormancy. In colder districts, tuberous-rooted cannas and dahlias should be dug up and stored in just-damp compost in a cool, airy place. In warmer areas, an ample mulch of compost or leaf mould should protect them and they can stay put. IT’S A WRAP For those growing exotic plants outside, protect the “hardy” bananas (Musa basjoo) and tree ferns by wrapping their trunks and crowns in straw or bubblewrap and hessian. Melianthus are at their best this late in the season, so work straw around the base of their stems and allow the frost to blacken the tops in time.

fallen, take cuttings at pencil length and pencil thickness. Make a clean cut immediately below a bud and a sloping cut above to tell top from bottom. Plunge to half their depth in compost or a trench in open ground if you don’t have a frame. Vines, cornus, willow, buddleia and fig will be rooted by spring and ready for potting by mid-summer. GONE WITH THE WIND If you live in a windy area, roses and buddleia can be topped by a third to prevent wind-rock, which can undermine stability over the coming months. A clean cut is advisable, but more accurate pruning can follow on the other side of winter when the sap is rising. Save the prunings for a welcome bonfire and enjoy the end of the day with chestnuts in embers and the last of the season’s potatoes.

CUT AND DRIED The window between now and the end of the year is the best time to take hard-wood cuttings. As soon as the leaves have

Win A Wold Top Six Pack

To enter the draw to win the Wold Top Beers please send a postcard with your name, address and telephone number to WoldSix Competition, 31 Elm Drive, Cherry Burton HU17 7RJ The draw closes at noon on 30th November 2014 - Good Luck.

The Wold Top Brewery, high on the Yorkshire Wolds where gently sloping hills give way to the sea, is an integral part of Hunmanby Grange farm and home of the Mellor family. Using predominantly home grown, locally malted barley and pure chalk filtered water from the farm’s borehole, the Brewery produces award winning beers in both cask and bottle. The farm has been in the family for four generations, each one passionate about sustaining the farm, and now the Brewery. Wind turbines exploit the farms exposed location, virtually eliminating imported power, a reed bed filters the waste water back into the Wolds and the Wold Top Wood helps offset our carbon footprint.

WIN A PAIR OF TICKETS TO SEE PETER GABRIEL

Peter Gabriel is set to perform his iconic album ‘So’ in its entirety at Motorpoint Arena Sheffield on Sunday 30th November Following the phenomenal response to the recent ‘Back to Front’ tour dates, the latest honoured musician to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Peter Gabriel, has confirmed a further series of ‘Back to Front’ arena shows in the UK. He will be stopping off at the Motorpoint Arena Sheffield on Sunday 30th November. It is testament to the enduring appeal of Gabriel’s 1986 album that the ‘Back to Front’ tour has caught the public imagination so strongly once again. The new shows will continue to feature the original ‘So’ live band (bass-wizard Tony Levin, guitarist David Rhodes, keyboardist David Sancious and drummer Manu Katche) and span Gabriel’s illustrious career, including a performance of ‘So’ in its entirety. “We serve it up in three parts; like a meal. The starter will be an acoustic bit, almost like we would be in rehearsal mode. From that acoustic starter we move

on to the savoury dish, which is electric or more electronic stuff. If you survive that, then you get your dessert, which is the complete and uninterrupted album of ‘So,’ in the order in which it was originally intended”. - Peter Gabriel As well as celebrating the ‘So’ album the tour has also been an opportunity for Peter to play some new material live for the first time. Tracks like ‘Daddy Long Legs’ and ‘Show Yourself ’ both featured regularly during the 2013 tour to fantastic audience reactions.

To enter the draw to win a pair of tickets: Please send your Name, Address and Telephone Number on a postcard (before 14th November 2014) to: Peter Gabriel Competition, c/o 31 Elm Drive, Cherry Burton, Beverley HU17 7RJ

The team itself is still gelling. Several players arrived during the transfer window and three of them Ramirez, Hernandez and Ben Arfa are still getting up to full fitness. There has also be a dip in the form of several key player such as Huddlestone, Davies, Livermore though this may be a temporary dip as they have reach the heights of last year during their second season. Two of them failed to reach the World Cup squad and the other gained his permanent move so they have slightly dipped but as they say class is permanent and form is only temporary. They should return to last years performances over time. We have also struggled to accommodate Michael Dawson but hopefully the Crystal Palace match will be the first one where the defence returns to its former resilience with a back three of Chester, Dawson and Davies. Frustratingly several points were dropped over the previous month against teams in our ‘mini-league’ with harder games coming up during the next few weeks. Saying this when everything clicks this will be a very good team and we will be once again aiming for a top ten position.

East Stand Views...

Key to the team is of course Steve Bruce. Prior to the trip to St James Park several newspapers had our manager favourite to replace Alan Pardew if we had not thrown away a two goal lead in that fixture. Other media outlets and bookies made David Moyes the favourite however. This is another of the lingering issues this season. Steve Bruce has remained diplomatic on the issue and has regarded the speculation as disrespectful to the current Newcastle manager. He has never stated that he would not be interested however. He has potentially a job for life in Hull and has thus far had an excellent relationship with the owners. He has previously stated regrets at not taking

To Contact

an earlier opportunity to manage his boyhood team. Newcastle United is a poisoned chalice as their deluded fans will expect a top 4 position again and whoever takes power will never be able to achieve these aims. Foreign investment has changed the shape of the Premier League since the Keegan era. Newcastle would offer him a new challenge and final payday if anything should go wrong at City and that’s the next issue.

Just about everyone is sick to the back teeth of the name issue. We all hoped it would die a death in the summer but the recent press conference only confirmed what they told us back in April that they would challenge the decision and/or sell up. This is has been the inevitable outcome since hostilities began 12 months ago. Some people appear to be excited that they will sell the club but the big question is to whom? We are no longer in the era where a Don Robinson, Tom Belton or even Adam Pearson could come in. The asking price could be around £100 Million. No-one locally has this cash and few people in Britain to be honest. £100 million buys a name, players, manager and Premier League financing. It doesn’t include the ground and unless somehow a deal could be agreed on the stadium with a prospective owner you cannot see anyone coming in at present. If the Council won’t deal with Allam then would they negotiate with unknown foreign investors should they materialise over the next 6 months?

The other option was the ‘Give it away’ suggestion but if they wanted to give it away then the only way to recoup their investment would be a sale of players comparable to that held by Southampton during the summer. Clubs would probably see there was a fire-sale going on and so they wouldn’t get the asking prices. The owners could also potentially take some of the Sky money. This would be the nightmare option as we could lose the players to keep us in the Premier League and also struggle to pay the wages. It’s the worst case scenario but consequences of the name change issues could yet come back to bite us. A couple more years of mid – table respectability with a disliked name may have led to a possible take-over but we have not reached this stage yet. We have only had three years in the Premier League in our entire history; we don’t have a ground or massive fan base and cannot generate income except on match days. We hope someone is around the corner but gone are the days of £1 million take-overs involving local consortiums. Another interesting scenario has arisen from the East Riding of Yorkshire Councils statement of support to Assem Allam. Has the Melton Stadium concept resurfaced? Is their only possible way out to develop a new stadium, leisure facilities and retail outlet at Melton? It seems unlikely and even if they gain money from hotels or retailers to be part of a site they still would need to spend millions. That’s before even thinking about the possibilities of gaining planning consent for the project. Another black hole for their money? Another way for them to lose fans? Who knows? All because a fall out with Hull City Council and the associated name issue!

Words by Woody Mellor

Hull City AFC is in a state of flux at the moment. We have the best squad of players we have ever had, 13 players on international duty this week for instance plus the most successful manager ever and yet there are issues which need resolving to keep everyone happy.

FIONA’S FOOD FOR THOUGHT By Fiona Dwyer, broadcast journalist, PR & media consultant, slave to 2 children and a husband.

DO YOU KNOW WHAT YOU GIVE YOUR CHILDREN FOR BREAKFAST?

I was shocked recently during a trip to the supermarket to discover exactly how much sugar goes into certain children’s breakfast cereals. Now, there are already quite a few that are on my “Absolutely No!” list, but my daughter asked for a particular brand we’d not tried before – and I’m horrified to say that over 80% of it was pure sugar! Of course, reasoning that out with a 7 year old in the middle of a shop isn’t the easiest thing in the world, but what else could I do but refuse? Why on earth are the manufacturers of these cereals allowed to target children in this way? Isn’t it irresponsible? Every other day we hear stories about child obesity problems, an increase in tooth decay in primary school children, behavioural problems brought on by a poor diet and so on. Is it any wonder?

BUYING FOR CHRISTMAS – WHAT ALREADY?!!

I always remember a friend of mine from secondary school who was particularly organised when it came to Christmas. We were only in our first year and she had bought and wrapped all her presents by the end of October! I couldn’t believe it then and I still struggle with it now. And I know she’s not the only one. I hear mothers in the playground who are “pretty much sorted” and only have a few of the “bigger things” to get. What – already? I think I’m probably a bit envious that they have everything so planned out. But while I do try to get a few things in November, especially because it helps spread the cost out, there’s something I rather like about shopping just before Christmas, looking for just the right present for someone – and often it’s something you happen upon unexpectedly and realise it’s perfect!

WHEN DO YOU START LETTING YOUR CHILDREN OUT ON THEIR OWN?

My 9 year old son desperately wants to walk to school on his own, but I won’t let him. There’s a road he would have to cross on the way that gets busy with the school run, and cars often go faster than they should, perhaps because people are in a rush to get to work after drop off. I’m not really sure. Suffice it to say I hear “Oh mum, I’m nearly 10!” quite a lot these days. Three of his classmates called at our house last weekend to see if he could go to park. They were on their own. I didn’t let him go with them but then said I’d take him to the park so he could meet up with them. So at what point do we let our children out without supervision? Definitely secondary school, but primary school? Isn’t that too young? Isn’t it just adding another layer of worry? Do we need to create any extra stress?! Perhaps I’m being over protective? Saying that, I’ve spoken with other parents and they are all having similar concerns! I’m certainly cautious but I’m also aware that at some point they need to spread their wings! And whenever I wonder if I should start relenting soon, I read about another child getting knocked over somewhere or hear about another attempted abduction near a school or playground – and the wall goes up again! It’s a parental nightmare! The desire to protect those we love so much against the need for them to learn to navigate the risks of life independently.
