Pets Page

The importance of Neutering Pets Each month, vet Dr. David Robinson from the Kingston Veterinary Group will be giving advice about looking after your pets. In this month’s Pets Page he talks about the importance of neutering. If you do not intend to breed from your pet, we recommend that you have it neutered. Apart from preventing unwanted litters, neutering reduces the risk of your pet developing a serious disease, can help them to live longer and enjoy a better quality of life. Neutering a female is known as spaying and involves removing the ovaries and/ or womb. In a male it is known as castration and involves removal of the testicles. Both of these low risk procedures are carried out under general anaesthetic. Your pet will be closely monitored throughout and after the procedure and will be given pain relief. They will usually be able to come home on the same day and will require rest for about seven days.

Male dogs that have been neutered have a reduced risk of getting testicular cancer, prostrate disease and other cancers. Unneutered dogs are much more assertive and are more prone to urine marking than a neutered one. However, neutering your dog should reduce urine marking and may stop it altogether. For cats, the urge to spray is extremely strong, and the best way to stop it is to get them neutered before there is a problem. Neuturing also minimises howling, the urge to roam, and fighting with other males. Fighting puts your cat at risk of contracting several fatal diseases, including the feline AIDs virus – an incurable disease spread by saliva and commonly transmitted by a bite wound whilst fighting or mating with an infected cat. We recommend neutering your cat when it reaches 2kg in weight, which is usually between four to six months of age. Dogs can be neutered from six months of age and rabbits from five months.

Kingston Vets also offer the option of spaying by keyhole surgery. This is minimally invasive and your pet will only need to rest for about 24 hours after the procedure.

If you are considering having your pet neutered speak to your vet, as they can talk you through the procedure, and advise you about the cost and the best time to have it done.

Spaying a pet, especially whilst it is young and before its first heat, greatly reduces the risk of mammary cancer, uterine cancer and infection of the womb, all of which are common and potentially fatal conditions in older, unspayed pets.

If you have any queries about your pet’s health you can ask us for advice. Contact us on 01482 223688 or visit our website www.kingstonvet.co.uk

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! ADVERTISEMENT

It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Branch Manager William Moulds feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can

replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we

will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Hull, Beverley & Driffield areas and William is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal

satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give William a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Ten Top Tips to make Your New Year’s Resolution a Success.

“If you are trying to lose weight, it’s not enough to stick a picture of a model on your fridge or fantasise about being slimmer.” He said the 10% of participants in the study who had achieved their target broke their goal into smaller goals & felt a sense of achievement when they achieved these.

Most of us will make a New Year’s resolution - maybe to lose “Many of the most successful techniques involve making a plan and helping weight, quit smoking or drink 6. Tell your friends and family about your less - but only one in 10 of us will yourself stick to it,” says Prof Wiseman. goals. You’re more likely to get support achieve our goal. and want to avoid failure. Psychologists have found we’re more likely to succeed if we break our resolution into smaller goals that are specific, measurable and time-based.

7. Regularly remind yourself of the benefits associated with achieving your goals by creating a checklist of how life would be better once you obtain your aim.

Professor Richard Wiseman, of the University of Hertfordshire, tracked 5,000 people as they attempted to achieve their New Year’s resolutions. His team found that those who failed tended not to have a plan, which made their resolution soon feel like a mountain to climb. Some focused too much on the downside of not achieveing their goal, adopted role models, fantasised about their goal or relied on will power alone. “Many of these ideas are frequently recommended by self-help experts but our results suggest that they simply don’t work,” says Prof Wiseman.

8. Give yourself a small reward whenever you achieve a sub-goal, thus maintaining motivation and a sense of progress. 9. Make your plans and progress concrete by keeping a handwritten journal, completing a computer 1. Make only one resolution. Your chances of success are greater when you spreadsheet or covering a notice board with graphs or pictures. channel energy into changing just one aspect of your behaviour.

Top 10 goal-setting tips:

2. Don’t wait until New Year’s Eve to think about your resolution and instead take some time out a few days before and reflect upon what you really want to achieve. 3. Avoid previous resolutions. Deciding to revisit a past resolution sets you up for frustration and disappointment. 4. Don’t run with the crowd and go with the usual resolutions. Instead think about what you really want. 5. Break your goal into a series of steps, focusing on creating sub-goals that are concrete, measurable and time-based.

10. Expect to revert to your old habits from time to time. Treat any failure as a temporary setback rather than a reason to give up altogether.

How to have your Cake this Christmas & still lose weight!! Christmas is a wonderful time of year and for me personally with 5 young boys to please its especially good fun and of course a very time with lots of nice food. So how can people who are watching their weight still enjoy themselves at Christmas without piling on the pounds? Do not mix processed & starchy carbs with proteins. So on a Christmas meal, roast potatoes when combined with meats clog the digestion process and fat is stored; replace some or all of your roasts with roasted carrots or sweet potato. So keep your processed carbs to a minimum, have as much natural carbs as you want you can eat fruit as you can eat and I promise you will not put on an ounce of fat from

eating whole fruit. By the way the cherry on your black forest gateaux in not one of your 5 a day! Merry Christmas & see you in the New Year

Travel

Amazing culture close to home ..

It is not everyone’s cup of tea these days to have a relaxing beach holiday. Often to find real local culture you feel you have to travel to far away countries. Italy still retains so much charm and within a three hour flight you can be soaking up the local atmosphere. If you are looking for something different I have a gem of a village in Tuscany which will offer a very different fabulous break. The little hotel has just 9 rooms, at the door it says 3 star but you will receive 5 star hospitality. Family run by 3 generations everywhere you look there is a smiling face. The food is produced from local produce and I would be surprised if anyone does not add a few pounds ~ well you are on holiday. All meals are included during your stay and even breakfast is a wonderful banquet. The village has been reinvented to ensure it survives in this remote location. It is a charming place and located above a stream with a pretty bridge surrounded by stunning scenery along with a natural swimming pool. If you do the cookery course then during your week you can enjoy 5 x 2 hour cooking lessons, I enjoyed making pasta during my stay but risotto, cakes, bread & how to do a proper Carbonara are also taught. The Carbonara is unlike any you have seen before. Of course if you are not into cookery walking would be a super alternative option. Truffle hunting with the dogs is not to be missed! This gives, fresh air & exercise plus the excitement of the dogs hunting out the truffles in the woods. We found both black & white varieties on our hunt, the smell is strong a little like roasted garlic. I tasted plenty freshly grated onto my food. Olive oil tasting including fresh from the press went down well as did wine tasting including a unique white wine produced in the old Roman way in pots buried under the soil. For stress relief you could join in a Yoga class it certainly made us feel good in fact we all said we would have liked to do it everyday. The village runs an Italian language school. If you are not intending to take the language so seriously, you will return having learnt a number of words as Mama & Grand Mama love to chatter away in their native tongue! It is hard to describe this wonderful place, the best way is to visit for yourself at any time of the year you will return home rejuvenated and had the most wonderful experiences including a visit to the worlds smallest volcano! Health & Wellbeing

Christmas stress: How to deal with festive anxiety.

As the festive season approaches it’s easy to get caught up in the excitement of Christmas. But for many people the holiday season can be a major source of anxiety. From concerns about Christmas budgeting to finding yourself anticipating family disputes, here are some ways you can alleviate your festive woes and enjoy a more relaxed Christmas time.

Money worries

Christmas can send your household and credit card bills sky rocketing. With presents, festive food and Christmas parties to keep up with it feels almost impossible to cut costs. Before you dig deep into your savings or over draft, try and work out what you really NEED to buy over the festive season. Can you come to an agreement to take a break from Christmas gifts? Or plan a soiree in your own home to avoid expensive restaurants? Or why not indulge in Secret Santa? Try and plan ahead for next year if you’re worried about money stresses. Put a bit of money in a savings account specifically for Christmas time that you can your family can all contribute to.

Family problems

Pressures from TV shows and films make Christmas seem like an idyllic family time. The truth is that there will inevitably be fall outs, lets face it how often do you spend THAT much time with all your family members? If you have an unresolved issue with a particular family member, try and make a promise to not discuss it over Christmas lunch and buffer yourselves with other family members. Maybe your new year’s resolution can be to talk things through, but over Christmas try not to confront issues so directly. Focusing on children is a great way to set your priorities when it comes to family quarrels, especially if you and your partner have split up. Enable their happiness even if it does mean enduring a bit of awkwardness. Also try not to over indulge on alcohol. A few shandies in and you might end up saying something that you regret.

Loneliness

Though Christmas is often perceived as a happy time, for

many people it can be a period of immense loneliness. Not everyone spends Christmas with loved ones, but if you find yourself planning a Christmas dinner for one there are ways you can combat loneliness. Volunteer for a soup kitchen or animal shelter on Christmas day. This way you can be around others AND feel like you’ve made a difference. If you’re worried about a loved one or even a neighbour being lonely at Christmas make sure you reach out to them. A friendly phone call can be a priceless gift over the festive period.

Time management

If you’re worried about getting everything done in time for Christmas try and organise your time appropriately. Make a time table of ‘deadlines’ that you need to have completed tasks for e.g. buying presents, sending gifts abroad, ordering items online and buying your big Christmas food shop. You can also save money by being more prepared. This will calm your Crimbo nerves by a huge amount.

Staying healthy

If there’s a way to put a downer on Christmas it’s getting poorly. Make sure you eat healthily and take care of yourself in the lead up to Christmas morning. Try and steer away from all the boozy nights on offer and stock up on protein-rich foods and Vitamin C. You’ll be full of energy come Christmas day! Motoring News

Speed awareness courses could ‘invalidate insurance’ New questions raised over police links to companies offering speed awareness courses, as it emerges motorists could be risking huge problems if they fail to tell insurers about courses. Police are conning motorists over speed awareness courses by failing to make clear how drivers could inadvertently leave themselves uninsured by taking part, campaigners have said. Insurers have admitted they treat speed awareness courses the same as penalty points and it is now feared that failing to declare taking part in course could invalidate your policy. technology in the design of the Nissan IDS concept.” The courses, which cost between £80 and £150, allow drivers to avoid penalty points on their licences. Campaigners said this lulls many motorists into a false sense of security that they do not have to declare the course to insurers, in the hope their premiums will not rocket for a speeding-related offence. However, insurers usually operate a “catch all” clause in their policies about keeping them informed about factors which may affect your driving, and failing to declare a course could lead them to cancel cover in the event of an accident, experts said. Ian Belchamber, a campaigner who runs an anti-speed camera campaign in Dorset, said: “The police’s actions are potentially resulting in people driving uninsured because they haven’t told motorists to tell their insurers about the speed awareness course.

When will I get a speeding ticket?

Put simply, as the law stands, you’re liable for a speeding ticket the minute you exceed the speed limit – no ifs, no buts. That means doing 31mph in a 30mph limit, 41mph in a 40, and so on. Some people say that that should be the end of it – but practically, it makes little sense. Such strict enforcement would force drivers to watch their speedos like hawks, meaning they spend less time watching what’s going on in the world around them. What’s more, speedometers aren’t always accurate; someone with a speedometer that’s gone out of calibration could innocently think they were doing 70mph, when they were actually doing fractionally more. To take account of these factors, the National Police Chiefs’ Council (NPCC) suggests police forces don’t prosecute until drivers exceed a margin of error of 10 per cent of the speed limit to take into account driver concentration, plus 2mph for speedometer error. This means that most police forces will not prosecute until you’re driving at more than 46mph in a 40mph zone, for example, or 79mph in a 70mph zone. However, it should be noted that the guidance is exactly that, and that the decision over whether to give a driver a speeding ticket or not is entirely at the discretion of individual police forces and officers. In other words, you can already be prosecuted for driving at speeds that are above the limit but below the suggested threshold.

What’s the penalty?

A Fixed Penalty Notice for speeding will result in three points on your driving licence and a £100 fine. However, if your speed was sufficiently high to land you in court – or if you reject the FPN – the penalties could be much worse; the maximum fine for speeding is £1,000 (or £2,500 on the motorway), and your licence could be revoked.

“I would make sure your insurer knows you’ve been on a course regardless of whether they specifically ask for that information. “If you are involved in an accident and the insurer looks into your history and sees you’ve been on a speeding course they could say ‘You didn’t tell us about this, you’re not covered’.” Tim Ryan, deputy chairman of the British Insurance Brokers’ Association, has confirmed insurers are “perfectly entitled” to hike the premiums of drivers who have attended a course. “Insurers rightly increase premiums for people attending speedawareness courses,” he said earlier this year. “They have still broken the law on the road but are just taking their medicine differently. “Drivers might avoid penalty points on their licence but car premiums could still leap significantly, which insurers are perfectly entitled to do.”

Gardening: Sponsored by Heritage Landscape Centre

Gardening in December General tasks and garden maintenance

Carry on digging over beds and borders and incorporate as much organic matter as you can. Forking over not only helps prepare the soil for next year, it helps reduce pests by exposing them to hungry birds. Protect pots and taps from frost by wrapping insulation around them. Bubble wrap is ideal and probably in plentiful supply if you are ordering Christmas presents over the internet! Clear paths of moss and lichen, treat timber with preservative, repair fences, check sheds and walls (but avoid any concreting until there is no chance of frost), clean and insulate greenhouses (that bubble wrap again!) and ensure heaters are working properly. Even a little insulation will make a huge difference to your heating bill. Clean and repair your garden tools and clock the lawn mower in for a service. New tools are always a welcome present, as are new gardening gloves. Clear debris - this is vital to prevent slugs and snails from setting up home in those lovely warm and damp conditions! However, a plea for wildlife... An artless pile of sticks and logs will make a wonderful ‘des res’ for hibernating hedgehogs and the like, so please don’t be too ferocious on the tidying front.

Make leaf mould out of fallen leaves - they will rot down into fantastically fertile matter after a year (2 for oak leaves). Store wet leaves (they must be wet to rot) in large black plastic sacks forked with holes or piled into a chicken wire container or similar. Failing that, add them to the compost heap.

Vegetables

Harvest leeks, Brussels sprouts (from the bottom upwards), carrots, parsnips (after a frost) and winter cabbages. Earth up winter brassicas to help protect them from wind - if your sprouts are very tall it will pay to cane them. Remove yellow leaves as these encourage fungal disease.

Fruit trees and bushes

Plant fruit trees and bushes as long as the soil is neither too wet nor frozen. Prune established apple and pear trees (not those grown against a wall) - keep the centre of the tree fairly open to allow air to circulate freely which helps avoid disease. Ensure any crossing and rubbing branches are cut out - open wounds will only encourage disease. If you are unsure about how to prune, please get advice at the garden centre.

Lawns

If the weather allows, repair holes and tatty patches in your lawn. If it is waterlogged, as most will be after the November deluges, or even frozen try and avoid walking on it - damage is easily inflicted!

We lost David Meyler to injury whilst on international duties and this has caused a major problem. In the Bristol

City game we also lost Andy Robertson to suspension and Michael Dawson to injury and suspension. Losing Dawson till the Christmas period has meant the side and defence in particular has lots its leadership and against Derby was all at sea in the first half. Hopefully the challenges over next month, Manchester City excepted will not be as difficult as the defence no longer appears as secure as with Dawson at the helm. Much of City’s success this season is down to the majority of our opponents being unable to break through Dawson and Davies, Bruce or Maguire. We were almost secure with just one goal during the five game winning run but that confidence may not remain the case over the next few weeks. The loss of Robertson for just the one game meant a major reshuffle which disrupted the side against Derby and does highlight one of the squad’s shortcomings. Instead of taking players on the outside he would take the easier option of passing inside and as the only width this team has comes from the fullbacks this is a shortcoming that may need addressing in the January transfer window. Following the 3-0 victory over promotion favourites Middlesbrough the football world came to the conclusion that Hull City were potential champions and one website journalist even described this team as ‘unplayable’, no one could handle us in this division! FIONA’S FOOD FOR THOUGHT By Fiona Dwyer, broadcast journalist, PR & media consultant, slave to 2 children and a husband.

INSPIRING CAFÉ I recently did a report for Calendar about a café in Hull which has recently opened and has one of the most fantastic ideas I have seen or heard of in a long time. It’s called Inspire Café and you can find it on George Street. Basically, when you go in and order your hot meal and/or buy a cup of tea or coffee you can also buy a “pending” meal or drink which will then be offered to a homeless person. What a great initiative. It’s so simple yet so important for those who are in desperate need. As the cold weather is upon us, I think we should all try to take a trip in and do something that will help people far less fortunate than ourselves.

IS CHRISTMAS STRESSFUL? Yes the festive season is upon us – and it can often be a stressful time – making sure you have bought all the presents you need, you’ve bought enough food and let’s not forget the stress that can often come with visiting family members! But don’t forget to take a step back. Christmas should be less about presents and buying “stuff” and more about taking the time to spend with your children, your parents (if you’re still lucky enough to have them with you), your siblings and any other family members you’re close to. And if there is someone who is estranged, and you can’t even remember why you don’t speak anymore, perhaps now is a good time to try to reconnect. I also think it’s important to check on any elderly neighbours or friends you have. How are they spending the festive season? Do they need help? Do they want to come to your house for Christmas dinner? Christmas shouldn’t be a stressful season. It should be a time of great love and joy – so try to help yourself and others around you by not having a meltdown! Don’t worry if everything isn’t perfect – it’s not the end of the world. It’s far more important to spend quality time with your children and family.
