Caring for Older Pets Each month, vet David Robinson from Kingston Vets will be giving advice about looking after your pets. In this month’s article he discusses looking after older pets. It can be difficult to spot the early signs of ageing in your animal, particularly when you see them every day. You may not even realise that your furry friend is considered ‘geriatric’ but, just like us, they are living longer due to advances in veterinary care and nutrition. Blood and urine testing can tell us a lot about what is happening ‘behind the scenes’ before it is possible for anyone to notice anything is wrong. Animals, particularly cats, often do not tell us exactly how they are feeling in a way which humans find easy to pick up on. Regular examinations, and further tests where necessary, can therefore help us to monitor your pet more closely. In particular, we may be able to slow down, or even temporarily halt, the progression of certain ageing processes. Obesity is common amongst older dogs and cats so it is important to get the right balance between feeding and exercise. Excess weight can worsen health problems such as heart disease or arthritis. Joint function deteriorates with age and arthritis is common.
Weight control is vital and an exercise plan may help to alleviate symptoms. Exercise your dog little and often and do not take him out when he is lame or stiff. Massage, physiotherapy or hydrotherapy may prove to be beneficial. If your pet begins to drink much more than usual it may be a sign of disease, such as kidney problems or diabetes. So, if there is a change in your dog’s thirst or appetite, consult your vet. There is much that can be done to help your pet. For example, if he has been diagnosed with kidney problems you may need to put him on a prescription diet. Different diets are available for a number of conditions and your vet will be able to advise which one is best for your pet. As pets get older they are more prone to develop lumps or growths. Often these are nothing to worry about, but sometimes they may prove to be cancerous. It is always advisable to book an appointment with your vet as soon as possible if your pet develops any new lumps. An older animal’s immune system becomes less efficient and infections are picked up more easily and are more difficult to fight off. So remember, older pets still need regular boosters for vaccinations, plus flea and worming treatments as well. If you have any queries about looking after your elderly pet you can ask us for advice. New campaign to give women more confidence to exercise l
Research shows two million fewer women than men are active, but 75 per cent want to do more. l Fear of judgement is the primary barrier for women. l Women of all shapes, sizes and abilities celebrated for the first time in high profile national campaign to give women the confidence to do more sport and exercise.
A bold new campaign set to tackle head on the barriers that stop millions of women being more active has been launched. Led by Sport England, the This Girl Can campaign is the first of its kind to feature women of all shapes, sizes and sporting abilities that sweat and jiggle as they exercise. It seeks to tell the real story of women who exercise and play sport by using images that are the complete opposite of the idealised and stylised images of women we are now used to seeing. The campaign doesn’t hold back in trying to encourage women to beat their barriers. “Sweating like a pig, feeling like a fox” and “I kick balls, deal with it” are among the hard hitting lines used in the campaign to prompt a change in

attitudes and help boost women’s confidence. This Girl Can will use prime time TV advertising, billboards and cinema and shopping centre screens to put images of real women exercising on the national stage and use social media to start a debate about attitudes to female sport. It comes as research, carried out by Sport England, reveals that by every measure, fewer women than men play sport regularly - two million fewer 14-40 year olds in total. Despite this, 75 per cent say they want to be more active. In some other European countries, this disparity doesn’t exist. Further research into what’s stopping women turning their ambitions into reality found that a fear of judgement - on appearance, ability or how they chose to spend time on themselves - puts women of all ages off exercising.

News The findings were the driving force behind the campaign’s creation, which aims to empower women and encourage more to get active. Sport England CEO, Jennie Price, said: “The figures on participation are crystal clear. There is a significant gender gap, with two million more men than women exercising or playing sport regularly. I believe we can tackle this gap, because our research shows that 75% of women would like to do more. “Before we began this campaign, we looked very carefully at what women were saying about why they felt sport and exercise was not for them. Some of the issues, like time and cost, were familiar, but one of the strongest themes was a fear of judgement. Worries about being judged for being the wrong size, not fit enough and not skilled enough came up time and again. Every single woman I have talked to about this campaign – and that is now hundreds – has identified with this, and it is that fear of not being ‘good enough’ in some way, and the fear that you are the only one who feels like that, that we want to address. “In This Girl Can we want to tell the real story of women who exercise and play sport. They come in all shapes and sizes and all levels of ability. They have a myriad of reasons for doing what they do. If you are wondering if you should join them – or carry on – this campaign says it really doesn’t matter if you are a bit rubbish or completely brilliant, the main thing is that you are a woman and you are doing something, and that deserves to be celebrated.”
seem gross, but getting sweaty and red-faced shows your body’s working hard and that’s something to be proud of, not worry about. You have to put your shoulders back and hold your head high when you leave the gym or finish a run because having a sweaty face shows you’ve achieved something. It gives me more energy as well - I have to fit exercise around shift work because I’m a nurse and I often do a spin class before a night shift because it sets me up for what’s ahead.” Kelly Kelly, 31, is a single working mum of three from Bury, near Manchester. Kelly has found a distinct way to fit exercise into her life since she had her third child – by working out at home, with her children. Kelly said: “After I had my third child I just felt sluggish, I didn’t have any energy. I was due to go back to work and didn’t feel good about myself and that gave me the kick-start I needed to find a way to prioritise getting active. I make exercise a family affair. My kids are part of the workout routine – we put on music or a DVD on and just go for it together. It doesn’t feel like a pain to do it because it’s fun, and part of our life, and I really hope it has a positive effect on how my children view exercise as they grow up, so being active won’t feel like a chore, but just something they naturally do.” Plans to launch the campaign were announced towards the end of 2014 and it is already resonating with thousands of women through social media. As part of the campaign, Sport England is working with sports bodies, local authorities and companies across England to make sure they’re providing sporting opportunities that meet the needs of women inspired by the campaign. For more about This Girl Can, go to thisgirlcan.co.uk where you can find out about the women in the campaign, get tips on how to get active and join the national debate.
The campaign celebrates women who have found their own ways of breaking down their barriers. The women featuring in the campaign include: Victoria Victoria, 29, is a paediatric nurse in A&E, from East London. While a lot of girls say that getting sweaty isn’t feminine, Victoria isn’t one of them. In fact, Victoria is proud of getting hot, red faced and sweaty. She said: “At first sweating may

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! ADVERTISEMENT
It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Branch Manager William Moulds feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can
replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we
will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Hull, Beverley & Driffield areas and William is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal
satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give William a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Herb Gardening
Those of you who think of herbs as just parsley, sage and thyme, think on. Herb expert Ian Ashbridge of Heritage Landscape Centre explains just how to grow and use them. Herbs are the quintessential plant: they look good, smell good and do you good. They have been used ever since humans have been on the earth, as medicines, perfumes, insect repellents and, of course, in food and flavouring. This huge group of plants includes trees, shrubs, annuals and even cacti, to name but a few. The most important thing to remember when growing herbs is that they are the foundation of all modern medicine. They are not the gentle namby-pamby things some would like you to think. They are healers, therefore they should be treated with respect, and if you are considering them for specific medicinal use always consult a doctor or qualified herbalist. If you are growing herbs for use in the kitchen then you need to learn about their flavour and how they can aid digestion.
Heritage Landscape Centre
temperatures are hot during the day, especially for containers grown in full sun. The second tip is to feed container plants weekly from March until September. This keeps the plants healthy, helps them produce leaves, especially on cut and come again salads. I use a seaweed-based feed, however you can use any proprietary feeds that boost leaf production.
Remedies
One of the easiest and best ways to extract the medicinal properties of the herbs is to make a tisane, or herb tea, which can be drunk just like ordinary tea, and can provide a helpful supplement to the daily diet. To obtain the best flavour I always recommend using fresh herbs, but remember that they are less concentrated than dried herbs, as they still contain all their moisture. One of my favourite teas is lemon verbena, which has a lovely flavour and aroma, and is refreshing served hot or cold either on a summer’s day, or last thing at night to help me get a good night’s sleep.
Growing herbs
Herbs, in most cases, are tough wild plants which, when spoilt by the lush conditions of a garden, will thrive and romp away. It’s a myth that all herbs like full sun, even good old basil likes partial shade at midday. So when planning your garden, you can divide your plants into two sections, those like thyme, sage, rosemary, french tarragon and oregano that like full sun; and those that like partial shade, such as rocket, sorrel, mizuna, mustard, parsley and chervil.
Containers and window boxes
If I had to choose some ‘must haves’ to put in a window box on the sunny side of the house I would include chives, oregano, lemon thyme and a creeping rosemary to drape over the edge. However, on the shady side of the house I would have a salad herb window box which would include wild rocket, chervil, French parsley and red mustard. When growing herbs in containers, I have two important tips. The first is to use a soil-based compost, either organic or something like John Innes potting compost. This is because there are very few herbs that grow in peat, and a soil-based compost retains moisture which is a must to stop containers drying out. I also advise watering in the morning rather than the evening because this gives the plants a chance if the

Local People, Local Lives: Mandi Weymes This month we were lucky enough to interview Hull girl Mandi Weymes: Aftercare Therapist and Coach for the Jeremy Kyle Show. HM: What is your profession: MW: Personal Development Psychotherapist and Coach HM: Where were you born: MW: I’m proud to have been born and bred in Hull HM: Where do you live now: MW: Beverley High Road, Hull HM: Tell us about your family? MW: I’m the youngest of 4 children, 3 elder brothers, all but one owning their own businesses. Dad was a merchant seaman, then a antique & piano dealer. Mum has worked all her life in various caring roles, having 3 times retired, she now sells home made cards in the major shopping centres, we’re a really close family. I live with my partner Andy whose a self employed Gardener. My lovely son Dane whose 20 works at Arco but buys, sells & fixes phones in his spare time. You could say entrepreneurship runs in the family. HM: What do you do in your spare time? MW: When I’m not at the gym, which I love, esp the classes. I’m ruining the hard work by enjoying long leisurely lunches & coffees with friends. Shopping, esp handbags (I can sell them back to the shop I have that many), reading, cinema & pen-palling, the old fashioned pen to paper way. HM: How would you describe Hull to a visitor? MW: A lively, interesting, friendly & enjoyable place to live with a great night life, that I do enjoy sampling from time to time. And we won the City of Culture for 2017, so come on over visitors, let us show you what we’ve got. HM: What do you like most about Hull? MW: Living right next door to some of the most beautiful countryside. Also Hull has some of the best shops, entertainment, cafe bars & culture, all to enjoy with friendly people.
HM: If you could have dinner with anyone - who would it be and why: MW: All my grandparents. Though I was lucky to have met them all, they died when I was very young. As a huge part of my work is helping you understand where you come from, your family background and how that shapes who you are, I would really like to ask them about their lives to get some insight into myself. HM: What is your favourite food: MW: Chinese, a good Beef Roast, Fish & Chips, afternoon teas & everything my mum makes, I love her stews. It’s why I need to go to the gym so often. HM: When did you last go to the cinema and what did you see: MW: I regularly go to the cinema with my son, we have Cineworld passes. The last movie was Taken 3, it was brilliant. I’m off to see 50 Shades of Grey at the end of the month, with a large group of my girlie friends I might add, it would be too embarrassing to go with my son! HM: Describe your working day and what your job entails: MW: I usually start the day with a gym class work out, to get the adrenalin flowing, followed by a coffee, lunch & catching up on my admin & calls. From lunch time to evening I see clients in my lovely therapy room/summer house in my garden, or doing telephone or skype sessions. Some business meetings or delivering training for companies break up the week. Being a aftercare Therapist & Coach for the Jeremy Kyle Show, I usually end the day watching an episode, all in the name of research of course.

Mandi Weymes: Local People, Local Lives HM: What do you love most about your job: My lovely clients. They come into therapy as someone with low self confidence, anxious, stressed and unsure of where their life is going and they begin to blossom into the person they want to be, a confident, self-assured, empowered, individual. It’s why I do the wonderful job I do, they make it all worthwhile. HM: If you weren’t in your current position, what would you do for a living: MW: I wanted to be a air hostess when I was a child, but was told I was too short, I do enjoy flying though, but am grateful I never made the grade, it looks a stressful , thankless job. I guess I’d love to be a personal shopper, my current skills in that department would stand me in good stead. HM: Where do you see yourself in 10 years time:
Please remember to mention
MW: As well as continuing with the 1-1 work, I would expand to have a team of therapists & coaches and run more personal development workshops & retreats across the UK & abroad. My ‘Breaking Free – Become a Leader in Your Own Life’ workshop will be running again very soon. HM: Tell me something no one knows about you: MW: When I was in Junior School I was very shy and unconfident, I was determined to change that, to do something good with my life. All the therapy training, qualifications, personal therapy I’ve undertaken & loving support from family & friends, has helped shape me into the happy, confident, person I am today. This girl off a housing estate has done good. HM: Thank you Mandi for taking time out of your busy schedule for this interview: MW: You’re welcome, it was a pleasure to talk with you.

Clearing up Psoriasis, Dermatitis and Eczema without prescription drugs!
bees to keep the hive anti-septic) and an Aloe shower / bath gel. He says, “I began the treatment on the Thursday evening and, to my sheer and utter disbelief, by Friday morning the itch had completely disappeared.”
If you have ever suffered from Psoriasis, Dermatitis or Eczema you will know it is no laughing matter. It can be painful, itchy, irritating, sore and embarrassing! Prescription drugs such as hydrocortisone and other cortisone based treatments can have side effects that are as bad as the condition. So what if there was a natural remedy that could heal, soothe and is natural so doesn’t have the side effects? There is - it is called Aloe Vera. Obviously the more concentrated the better so a good quality Aloe Vera is most effective.
Like the Ross’s Finbar saw the problem got worse during his second week of treatment but he understood that the healing had begun. He says, “I am now at the stage where I have been taking the gel for 6 weeks and my body is clearing up at a steady pace. I have no doubt that I have found the answer to my problem.”
Aloe Vera has lignins, which are carried deep into the dermis layer of the skin and has also been found to reduce scarring during the healing process. Aloe Vera is anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, anti-inflammatory and deeply moisturising.
Like Eczema, Psoriasis and Dermatitis is actually a disorder of the immune system. These are very common and can be aggravated by stress, alcohol and digestive problems. There is a long chain sugar (polysaccharide) in Aloe Vera that can help to balance the immune system, which is why drinking Aloe Vera Gel can help to heal these conditions from the inside out.
By Debbie Pickering
John and Juliet Ross used Aloe Vera for their 9 year old daughter and her eczema patches cleared up in 3 - 4 weeks. They say, “However it did get worse before it got better and it was important that we persevered...We understand it was a ‘healing crisis’ when the damaged cells are pushed up to the surface by the deeper layer of healing skin. We continue to use the creme to keep the condition at bay” Finbar Lehane suffered from chronic psoriasis for many years and “...came to the conclusion that the side effects of Cortisone far outweighed the benefits” Finbar was given Aloe Vera Gel to drink, (Which helps to heel the skin from the inside) an Aloe Vera creme, also containing Propolis (used by
Please remember to mention
Using an Aloe soap helps and of course a rich moisturising creme with Aloe and Propolis will all help to heal from the outside, as well as bringing immediate relief from itching and soreness. In future articles, I will show how Aloe Vera can help with bowel and gut problems such as IBS, Colitis and Crohn’s Disease. It can help the digestive system, the immune system and the musculoskeletal systems as well as being a useful source of vitamins and minerals. The two case studies here can be found in Aloe Vera: The Medicine Plant by Dr Peter Atherton 2006 Published by KPM Co (pages 51 - 54)

T: 07538 793 320 78a Newland Avenue
The Avenues is an area of Victorian housing located in the northwest of Hull. It is formed by four main, tree-lined straight avenues running west off Princes Avenue. The Avenues area, originally built as middle class housing in the late 19th century, has remained a popular residential area. To the adjoining south of the Avenues is an area of contemporary Victorian terraces, with streets named after the seats of nobles; it is sometimes referred to as the Dukeries. In 1900 electric trams began to travel on Princes Avenue on a route that linked to the city centre by Spring Bank. The tram system was replaced with a trolley bus service in 1937,which were replaced by motor buses in the 1960s. As part of the original layout of the development Westbourne, Marlborough and Victoria Avenue had cast iron decorative fountains in the centre of the roads, with two more on Princes Avenue. All were of similar circular tiered design. The fountains on Princes Avenue were removed in 1926 due to increased traffic. The remaining fountains on Westbourne and Park Avenue are now listed structures. Early developments included houses by George Gilbert Scott the Younger, built 1877–79, which are now listed buildings. The area was primarily residential, in 1888 the Hull School board opened the ‘Industrial School for Girls’, a residential corrective institution on Park Avenue. A small preparatory school Froebel House was established in 1906 on Marlborough Avenue; and is still educating children today!. In the same year St. Cuthberts church was constructed on Marlborough Avenue The Avenues area has remained a popular place to live for many families in Hull as it has everything on its doorstep and offers a good choice of housing options from small start-up terrace houses, to large Victorian family homes. It is also a very popular area with academics and also students, due to being located close to Hull’s impressive university just a stones throw away on Cottingham Road. Good schools, childcare facilities, doctors, libraries and other local amenities on offer, all add to the positives of life on the ‘Aveunes’. It also has to be said that due to the tree lined roads and of course Pearson Park, which offers a great children’s playground as well as beautiful and well kept open spaces that residents can enjoy, it also represents one of the prettiest areas to live in and around Hull. The area became a council Conservation Area in 1974. In the 1980s the area experienced problems with subsidence due to a drought and extensive tree planting in the area causing drying of the clay subsoil, as a result many trees were cut down,

many of the tree stumps were carved into sculptures by local artists. Princes Avenue was a popular urban shopping street during the 20th century, in the 21st century it has remained commercial with increasing numbers of specialist shops, restaurants and other food outlets. Let’s not forget Chanterlands Avenue and Newland Avenue as they offer a great choice of cafes, bars and restaurants, well worth a visit, but it is the diverse range of shops, offering just about everything you could think of, that has the real pulling power. Whatever you are looking for from convenience stores, to garden supplies, boutique style shopping, to household goods, you will not be disappointed. The Avenues also has a great music scene, with local bands playing at various venues throughout the month and ‘Open Mike’ events held regularly.

Choose Your New Carpet in the Luxury of Your Home. After 12 years on Chants Ave, Chris Lee decided to go back to doing what he really enjoys about his job; getting out and meeting his customers in their own home. “Being tied to my shop on Chants Ave was restricting in the way I wanted to take my business. I have 100s of customers who prefer to use my home pattern service that I have been giving for the last 30 years; the benefits are that my customers get to see the new flooring sample in the area that it is to be installed, so they can be sure that the colour, design and texture is right for them, I can then measure up and give an instant quote while on site. Its a smooth, easy process that works well.” “My showroom is now set up in my new unit in Cottingham, the very unit I began my career in at P&D Carpets in 1984. I’m not there all the time, so my customers call me first and we meet up at their convenience. I’ve gone full circle, but I’m really enjoying my business again.”

They can drive you nuts at times with a downbeat cynicism, but nothing alters or beats your roots. At present I most like the opportunities the city now has to reinvent and reimagine itself after the years of decline that constitute my adult life.

PS: Churchill (that’s the dog not the former Prime Minister) with guests Jose Mourinho, Keith Richards, Bob Dylan, Marlon Brando, Anne Boleyn & Elvis. Through my involvement with the Yorkshire International Business Convention I have actually dined with such as Bob Geldof, Sir Tim Berners-Lee, David Frost, John Cleese, George Bush, Rev Jesse Jackson, Colin Powell, George Foreman &’Archbishop Desmond Tutu....and I can tell you it’s not always what you might think... HM: What is your favourite food? PS: That in front of me at my next meal - I love food probably too much! - It must compliment the glass of wine in hand. Must be quality fresh ingredients, lovingly cooked & hopefully spicy - otherwise I eat anything. HM: When did you last go to the cinema and what did you see? PS: I never go to the cinema - can’t stand being closed in out of the fresh air. I do remember however, the last film I saw in a cinema setting was when on holiday in Grand Caymen a few years ago, and we accidentally happened upon an outdoor showing of a new release called “Pirates of the Caribbean” Perfect setting, a rum punch, fresh air, and Johnny Depp mimicking my rock star hero Keith Richards That’s my kind of cinema! HM: Describe your working day and what your job entails? PS: We have a very diverse business ranging from Investment & Development, Construction & Facilities Management, Retail and even a Day Nursery. I have great people running all these and my job is to keep them happy, fulfilled & performing- so they keep our customers more than happy. HM: What do you love most about your job? Part way through writing my memoirs on my hobby farm in Cottingham maybe - which will never be finished, published or read. HM: Tell me something no one knows about you? The Creative & Cultural Column by Alan Raw
Hatching a City of Culture Winning the City of Culture for 2017 may well be the most significant thing to happen to Hull this decade, which is saying something after the scare Hull City gave Arsenal in the 2014 FA cup final. For one year, Hull will be the UK centre for arts and culture, giving the city a much greater international profile. People will literally fly halfway around the world just to visit Hull. The legacy of 2017 will hopefully be a vibrant cultural sector, which may in turn, help change the image of the city for the better and attract more investment and build greater prosperity. For some, this may all seem a bit too good to be true and sure enough, there are rumblings of concern in some quarters. What seems to be exercising the minds of the local arts community and many local citizens is the worry that the City of Culture will simply mean loads of outsiders coming in to ‘do’ all the arty stuff while we locals are mere onlookers or members of the audience. This is something we need to think about. Let’s be honest, we didn’t win the City of Culture bid because Phil Redmond and the other judges thought that Hull already had a world beating local arts scene. If this was the case then we wouldn’t need City of Culture status. All we’d need is a half decent promotional budget and maybe a five star hotel and then the glitterati would no doubt come flooding in, or at least visit now and again. Secondly, outside of London, I would suggest that no English city has a world class arts scene capable of supporting a year-long City of Culture programme without the support of ‘outsiders’. The City of Culture isn’t about putting on a local talent show. It is about holding the biggest and best arty-party of 2017 and to do that we are going to need outside help and it needs to be world class. So we shouldn’t be overly concerned about those big ticket events being run by and featuring professionals from outside Hull. It isn’t an admission of defeat and we aren’t being robbed of local jobs. Here’s a way of measuring where we stand. If you are an organiser do you have Peter Bazalgette’s
personal phone number? If you are an artist does he have yours? And if you’re wondering who the hell this guy is, well that’s another matter. And yet, it’s still our party. Whoever wrote the bid and however well it was done, the people of Hull won it. Don’t take my word for it, Phil Redmond made that perfectly clear when the result was announced. We may need the City of Culture, but we also REALLY want it. And when the well-earned hangover has worn off in January 2018 Hull’s cultural scene needs to be bigger and better, and we need to have great memories, of what we saw and heard but also what we did and what we can continue to do in culture, the arts and beyond. Hosting City of Culture isn’t in itself enough to create a positive and sustainable legacy. Thankfully no-one has come out with the old adage that a rising tide raises all boats, at least not yet. If they do here’s an answer - that’s great as long as you’ve got a boat. In order to develop and sustain a vibrant creative sector well beyond 2017, we need structured, well supported creative paths and artistic opportunities. And we need to make use of those opportunities to create great art and put on better events. We need to be doing these things up to and during 2017 if we are going to do them after. We should, of course, be realistic and we need to be fair, both to ourselves and to the City of Culture team. None of us expect to be asked to step in at the last minute and programme the opening ceremony, but we also shouldn’t be satisfied with standing by the side of the road hoping to sell a few beads to the cultured tourists. Derry-Londonderry (so good they named it twice) was the last UK City of Culture in 2013, a city previously best known to many for its role in ‘the Troubles’ and ‘Bloody Sunday’. 2013 undoubtedly helped to give the city a new image but it’s legacy was perhaps best summed up in the words of actress and singer Bronagh Gallagher; “Think of Derry as a child with a new voice. A place of thousands of nests with wee eggs about to hatch.” To make the most of our year in the spotlight we need to give serious consideration to the process of incubation. UK, Europe & Worldwide this month I bring you examples
that may just bring you food for thought and inspire you. In the UK I have chosen to focus on Scotland’s Ayrshire and the Isle of Arran. Not too far north this area is easily reachable by road within a day allowing for a scenic drive along with time for sightseeing. Cunnock home to Dumfries House is on route and would certainly be of interest to anyone having experienced Highgrove Gardens, this estate is a programme that HRH Prince Charles is heavily involved with developing. Before taking the short ferry crossing over to Arran it would be a shame not to take in Culzean Castle & Gardens. Arran itself is known as a miniature Scotland, offering no less than 7 golf courses, a castle with gardens, a whisky distillery. The island produces very nice toiletries of all things! and of course has stunning scenery and beaches. On route home there is time to take in the Robert Burns Birthplace Museum. This year sees many events commemorating historic anniversaries. In the UK the Magna Carta celebrates 800 years. Across Europe WW1 still continues its centenary until 2017 and this year the Battle of Waterloo has many special exhibitions for its 200th anniversary. There are many organised tours available travelling by coach via North Sea Ferries or Dover/Calais and Channel Tunnel as well as by air. You will be hard pushed to find one tour covering everything to do with WW1, you would be away for weeks rather than days. Another thing to consider is that the experience can be overwhelming and my opinion is that it becomes tough after 5 days and bite sized visits do allow you to absorb and understand more information. Now, one for the ladies the Women’s Institute is celebrating its founding 100 years ago in the small town of Stoney Creek, Ontario, Canada. We have a party taking a pilgrimage in September to take in not only a visit to Stoney Creek but a wonderful 11 day tour of Eastern Canada to see the fabulous scenery and colours of the fall along with amazing sight seeing in Ottawa, Montreal and Quebec plus a Whale watching cruise. You may of course be celebrating your own special milestone in life and wish to have a special break to commemorate your achievement. We are regularly asked to organise family breaks across two or three generations to celebrate birthdays and anniversaries. For example a city break, the sights of London with a show, Bruges via North Sea Ferries, Paris by Eurostar or with little ones a visit to Disney in Paris or Florida. A cruise is good for a family allowing everyone to do as they please during the day and gathering each evening to dine and catch up with the days events. Or hiring a Villa, Castle or Mansion in the UK, and various places around the world with the most popular being France, Italy, USA and the Caribbean. For couples there are many ideas in which to indulge from adventurous touring, to relaxing water villas by the sea or perhaps my favourite Regent 7 Seas all inclusive cruising! What ever destination & style of holiday you are looking we look forward to hearing from you ... Marion Promoting Local People, Local Lives and Local Stories.

Business MOTIVATIONAL ADVICE FROM AWARD-WINNING BUSINESS COACH PAM FEATHERSTONE
Prioritising
How many times do you say to yourself and to others that you have so much to do you simply don’t know where to start? We all do it - and the answer seems simple enough! It’s all about prioritising! But sometimes, actually figuring out what is and isn’t important becomes a major hurdle. Thinking ahead and working out your priorities is the difference between embracing your life and getting everything out of it you can, with as little stress as possible, and merely coping with your busy life. Most people have heard of the Pareto Principle, more commonly known as the 80/20 Principle – and it is something we can bring into everyday life. It’s a great leveller! Simply put, if you are in business, it means that 80% of your business comes from 20% of your customers. When it comes to your priorities, 20% of your priorities will give you 80% of your production. So IF, and only if, you spend your time, energy and money on your top 20% priorities, you will get a 400%, or fourfold, return in productivity. Think what a difference that could make to YOUR life! Out of interest, other examples of the 80/20 Pareto Principle are: When you’re reading, 20% of the book contains 80% of the content. And as far as our jobs are concerned, 20% of our work gives us 80% of our satisfaction. So when ordering your priorities, take an honest look at the question “What do I have to do that no one else can do?” Remember, only you can decide whether you will be reactive or proactive when it comes to the use of your time. The question is not “Will I be busy?” but “How will I invest my time?” It’s not “Will my calendar be full?” but “Who will fill my calendar?” It’s not “What people do I have to see?” but “Who do I want to see?” Think “What are the consequences of not doing this?” as opposed to “What are the consequences of doing it?” Ask yourself this and watch your life and personal satisfaction rise to new heights as your stress levels reduce forever! Report highlights changing face of business over past five years A report published by the Prime Minister’s Enterprise Advisor Lord Young has revealed that small firms have benefitted from a significant business boom and entered a ‘golden age’. The report reviewed the changing face of business over the past five years and showed that over 760,000 small businesses have now established themselves firmly within the business market. The internet has also been cited as one of the main tools that has allowed potential entrepreneurs to turn their ideas into viable businesses, breaking down barriers that may have previously stopped any independent enterprises from progressing. The government’s drive to roll out super-fast broadband around the country has now reached over 2 million homes and businesses, and the increasing use of tablets and smartphones providing on-the-go internet access have made it easier for those working independently to reach customers and make sales. Ross Bennett Chair of the Hull Youth Enterprise Partnership said: “Since his appointment as the Prime Minister’s Enterprise Adviser, Lord Young’s reports have helped inform our youth enterprise strategy and action plan in Hull to support enterprising young people. “We were particularly pleased to contribute to his report Enterprise for All, published in June 2014, which focused on the entrepreneurial spirit in education. It looked at how schools, colleges and universities work with employers to inspire and motivate young people and help them make the best choices for their future education and careers. “It recommended that young people should have a digital record of extra-curricular achievements and businessrelated activity, exam results, and an enterprise passport which we are currently in the process of developing with local teachers and tutors in the city. “As a partnership we welcome the idea of a new company to bring coherence and leadership to enterprise learning in education, working with local intermediaries and the Humber LEP in our area to put in place a network of Enterprise Advisers, who will often be local business people, providing advice to head teachers on developing an enterprise offer for their pupils as part of their duty under the Careers Statutory Guidance.”

The report also charts a change in culture, with growing numbers of people choosing self-employment rather than the more traditional careers. It also outlines how government policies are providing more support for small firms and new enterprises as part of the government’s long term plan to back businesses, create jobs and build a more resilient economy. Lord Young was appointed as the Prime Minister’s Enterprise Advisor in October 2011 and asked to review support for small businesses and look at how new and developing businesses can grow. Lord Young said: “In the last 5 years I have met countless numbers of inspiring young entrepreneurs and small firms including representatives from the Hull Youth Enterprise Partnership and members of the city’s young entrepreneurs network who presented me with a copy of Hull’s Enterprise Trail Game which I know understand is being developed into an APP to be made available to young people in the city. “My report reflects on the key developments that government and its partners have supported to raise ambition about enterprise and enable entrepreneurs to build successful businesses. “Put these together and you can see the transformative effect on enterprise opportunities in the UK today. This is the golden age for small firms – there has never been a better time to start and grow a business.”

Two major positives arrived on the following Monday however. Mike Phelan arrived as Assistant Manager and by 11pm they finally concluded a deal for Dame N’Doye who has now started the repayment with his goal against QPR. At the time neither made a great impression as it appeared by this time that it may be too late to steady the ship. There were too many players lacking the heart, effort or desire to keep us in the Premier League and arguably keep Steve Bruce in his job. As much as everyone says that he has the full support of the owners they must have been getting twitchy. They have put in/loaned £70 Million and if we went down they would both struggle to get this back or sell the club on to anyone. The wage bill is allegedly £56 million and most of the transfer deals over the past year could still have instalments to come out for the next year or so. Apparently there are wage cuts in place if the worst should happen but it would still be a nightmare scenario again.

What a difference there has been in City fans over a two week period. Most of us went home disconsolate after the Newcastle game or headed to the pubs to drown their sorrows. The general feeling around the ground (for those who hadn’t walked out already!) was that relegation was inevitable. This was also the feelings of Aaron Lennon as his proposed transfer deal was scuppered after witnessing the shambolic 3-0 defeat on tv or maybe as a club guest at the match.

Hull History Centre celebrates five years in business Hull History Centre has celebrated its fifth birthday, recording thousands of visits since doors opened in 2010. The £7.7m centre opened on 25 January 2010 and became the first archive service in the UK to be run jointly by a local authority and university with a successful partnership between Hull City Council and the University of Hull. Since its opening, members of the public have made over 160,000 visits to the centre, making it one of the busier archives and local studies libraries in the country. The History Centre also has an important and increasing online presence with over 73,000 visits to the website per year. Chairman of the Board of Governance of the History Centre, Councillor John Fareham said: “We are proud of how far the centre has come in five years. Funders, the Heritage Lottery Fund, have recently recorded the project as ‘complete’, which is a significant milestone in the life of the service.
Hull’s determination to play a full part in the development of our city. “Not only has it benefitted people locally, including the many students who use it, but it also attracts researchers from around the world to use its unique collections.” The centre is also encouraging family visits with popular new sessions including the ‘History Makers’ monthly series of craft and Lego activities for children inspired by the collections. www.hullhistorycentre.org.uk

“We have recently had state-of-the-art storage facilities installed which have enabled the centre to receive and preserve significant new collections including records from Trinity House. “It is new facilities like this that will encourage new visitors to the centre and, along with the rest of the Board; I am excited to be able to help shape what the future holds”. Hull City Council Portfolio Holder for Heritage, Councillor Terry Geraghty said: “The History Centre has grown and grown in popularity and is now recognised as a proud Hull landmark. “Interest in local history research has increased in recent years and the people of Hull and the surrounding area are very fortunate to have access to the fantastic facilities available at the centre. I look forward to seeing how the centre develops further in the next five years”. Dr Richard Heseltine, Director of Library and Learning Innovation and University Librarian said: “The History Centre has been a huge success since its opening five years ago, and is a model for collaboration between a university and a local authority. “It is a very tangible demonstration of the University of

FIONA’S FOOD FOR THOUGHT By Fiona Dwyer, broadcast journalist, PR & media consultant, slave to 2 children and a husband.
GIVE IT UP FOR LENT
When I was young I always gave up sweets for Lent. I didn’t get any pocket money so it’s not as though I bought sweets every week but any sweets or chocolates that anyone gave me during that time went into a plastic bag which I saved to start eating on Easter Sunday – and it was a real treat, I can tell you! I always thought Lent was about giving something up, but as I got a little older I realised that while giving up chocolate was always good for the waistline, it wasn’t necessarily a hardship. I was talking to my parish priest one day and he turned my thinking around. He said that Lent doesn’t have to be about giving something up. It can also be an opportunity to do something positive. Even remembering to smile and say hello to anyone you meet can brighten up the day, a simple act of kindness or as my daughter said to me: “Be nice, not mean!” And if you don’t “do” Lent then perhaps you could think of it as a time of reflection about what’s good about your life, your family, what things you might like to change and what positive steps you can take to make those things happen.
SPRING CLEANING
My garage is a disaster. Does anyone use theirs anymore for their car? I’m one of those people that thinks things will come in handy one day. There’s nothing wrong with it. It’s in good condition, so off it goes into the realm of my garage. And that’s why I now need a skip! I’m not even sure I know what’s out there anymore! My husband now says to me when I tell (sorry ask) him to put something there to store “When was the last time you looked in the garage. It won’t fit!” Sometimes I wish I could be like one of my brothers who has a great scheme – if he hasn’t used something for 6 months he gets rid of it. I just know that if I did that, come 6 months and one week later I would be frantically searching for that very useful item, whatever it might be! Anyway, I can’t tell you how pleased I am that it’s time for spring cleaning because I also need to have a good clear out in the house – and for that, yes you’ve guessed it, I need the garage! So – skip first, clear out second.
HOMAGE TO IRON MEN
No I don’t mean those men who undertake long distance triathlons or the genius, billionaire, playboy, philanthropist Tony Stark (for all you Marvel fans) but those unsung heroes who relieve the pressure of a particularly hateful chore. I love my husband. That goes without saying! But what I really love about him is that he does all our ironing because I hate it! It’s not that I can’t iron, I just don’t like doing it – and he does it so much better than me! Or at least that’s what I tell him! He may go into the office at 6.30 every morning to catch up on work, or more likely to avoid the nightmare that is getting the children up, breakfasted and out for school, but at least they’re crease-free! And he’s not alone! There are lots of them out there – so I say “Thank you and well done to all those Mr Browns, Mr Robinsons and others! Your efforts in this thankless task have been noted!”
