Pet Dental Health Each month, vet David Robinson from Kingston Vets will be giving advice about looking after your pets. In this month’s article he discusses dental health We often meet clients who are concerned that their pet is ‘a little off colour or a bit grumpy’. There are many reasons that can adversely affect your pet’s behaviour – but a common cause can be found by examining their mouth. Most cats and dogs live with a build up of plaque and tartar as they get older. This is not only potentially painful but it can also cause very bad breath. A vet can alleviate this problem by giving your pet a descale and polish (as you would have done at the hygienist) under anaesthetic, and the results can be remarkable, with your pet becoming more affectionate, playful and contented. Keeping your pet’s mouth clean and healthy is crucial to his overall health and wellbeing as chronic gum infections may spread to major organs. Gum disease can cause heart disease, damage to the kidneys, liver, pancreas, joints or nervous system, behavioural changes and weight loss.

These problems all arise from plaque and tartar. Plaque is initially soft and daily brushing is the most effective way of removing it. Left unattended plaque turns into hard, rough tartar which allows more plaque to accumulate. This harbours bacteria, which in turn can infect the gum tissue and the roots of the teeth. This is very painful for your four-legged friend, but these problems can be averted before they start with proper dental care. So when should you start dental care for your pet? The answer is the earlier the better, and your vet can show you how to do it. The following steps will help to ensure that your pet’s teeth and gums remain healthy: • Visit your vets for regular oral examinations and they will be able to recommend any necessary treatment. • Remove plaque from your pet’s teeth by brushing every day with one of the many specialist toothbrushes and dog and cat toothpastes available (never use a human product). As an alternative to brushing, there are now special daily diets available that provide the same dental benefits as brushing and actually clean teeth and freshen breath on every bite. • Check your pet’s dental health regularly – lift the lips and look for tartar, inflamed gums or damaged teeth. Also be aware of loss of appetite, bleeding gums, lethargy and, in cats, increased drooling. Remember, keeping your pet’s mouth in good shape is as important as a healthy diet and exercise. If you have any queries about looking after your elderly pet you can ask us for advice. Contact us on 01482 223688 or visit our website: www.kingstonvet.co.uk

Citizens of Hull, your city needs you! Wanted When Where Why

Runners, Volunteers, Spectators Sunday 13 September 2015 Hull The RB Hull Marathon

Organisers of the RB Hull Marathon are hoping that local people who have been inspired by last month’s London Marathon will sign up for a new marathon in Hull taking place on Sunday 13 September. Runners can take on the full 26.2 mile marathon or opt to share the distance between family, friends or colleagues as part of a four person relay team. It’s a chance for local people to run in front of their home crowd around familiar and not so familiar streets and achieve something really special. If you want to get involved without running 26 miles, why not volunteer to become a Marathon Maker? Like all city marathons around the world, the RB Hull Marathon needs volunteers to help out on the day, marshalling the route, handing out water etc. Don’t worry if you’ve never done anything like this before, all you need is enthusiasm and a bit of common sense. Briefing sessions will be provided for all roles in July and August. If you can’t commit to running or volunteering you can still play a big part in making this event a success by turning out to cheer on the runners. It’s free to watch and spectators are welcome all round the route, the more the merrier.

So what are you waiting for? Go to www.thehullmarathon.co.uk to find out more and if you have any questions please feel free to contact the RB Hull Marathon team via our Facebook page at www.facebook.com/ thehullmarathon.

My First Marathon ‘Safe City’ award win for council

by John Forbes

I’m running this year’s Hull Marathon on Sunday 13th September to raise funds for MS in memory of my mother, Patricia Mary Forbes (Turner) who sadly passed away in September 2014 after suffering with Multiple Sclerosis for many years.

A Neighbourhood Nuisance Officer has won the ‘Safe City’ Award at the annual Hull BID Awards 2015 ceremony at Hull Truck Theatre last night (Wednesday 29 April). The award recognises their outstanding contribution to protecting the safety of the public in Hull’s vibrant city centre. Gary Dixon was shortlisted as one of the three finalists in the category. An independent panel then decided the winner after receiving nominations from businesses within the Hull BID partnership.

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a neurological condition which affects around 100,000 people in the UK. Most people are diagnosed between the ages of 20-40, but it can affect younger and older people too. Roughly three times as many women have MS as men. Mary was born in 1939 and lived in Cottingham all her life. A well respected teacher at Hallgate Junior School for 21 years, she was very well known throughout the village which played a very large part of her life until she became housebound towards her later years.

Gary has been successful in obtaining a number of ASBO’s against individuals causing problems within the city centre and his main goal is to reduce antisocial behaviour and nuisance. He works very closely with retailers and businesses and also works closely with Hull BID officers and Humberside Police to tackle these issues. Gary Dixon, Neighbourhood Nuisance officer, said: “It is an honour to accept this award on behalf of Hull City Council’s Neighbourhood Nuisance Team.” Mark Charlton, Assistant City Manager for City Safe and Early Intervention, said: “I am really proud of Gary’s recognition for the work he undertakes for the residents of Hull. He and his colleagues work tirelessly with partners and residents to make the city safer.”

Many people will remember Mary for orchestrating the annual Flower Demonstrations at the Civic Hall in support of MS. The MS Society is the UK’s leading charity beating Multiple Sclerosis; investing in excellent research to find the cause and the cure for this devastating neurological condition. MS is complex, and has many symptoms. Most people won’t experience them all, certainly not at the same time. Symptoms might include fatigue, vision problems and difficulties with walking, but MS is different for everyone. Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! ADVERTISEMENT

It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Branch Manager William Moulds feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can

replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we

will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Hull, Beverley & Driffield areas and William is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal

satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give William a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Experts are predicting these rates will stay low for at least the next six months and could possibly be the lowest ever to be available in the UK. Strata have buying options tailored to suit whether you are a first time buyer or have a house to sell. Help to buy Help to Buy was introduced in 2013 to give first time buyers a chance to get on the property ladder. The scheme allows you to pay just 5% deposit, with the remaining 20% offered as an equity loan from the government. You would then only need to secure a 75% mortgage from the bank or building society. Not only does Help to Buy assist in securing your first house but your monthly repayments will also be reduced, freeing up some cash to personalise your home. Help & Advice

Getting ahead with Summer Savings It might feel like a distant dream, as you don your winter boots and brandish your de-icer, but summer will soon be upon us (I promise). Whether you are looking to get away, thinking about how to entertain the kids, or you just wanting to make the most of getting out and about in the British ‘sunshine’, there are ways you can be smart with your money. Planning ahead - If you know what you want to do, starting to think about it now will help you save cash. First create a budget of what you can afford; then make a list of everything you would like to do; and finally some rough estimates for cost. If you find yourself wildly off budget, then be realistic about what you could cut out. Do you need to go abroad this year, or could you try camping instead? How about planning some fun activities at home? Shop around - If you are headed abroad, have a look at price comparison sites for the best deals on flights. For example, Skyscanner.net allows you to compare the prices of different airlines across a whole month if you’re flexible, and across a whole country if you’re not picky about where to go. It’s worth noting that budget airlines are cheaper when you book two or three months in advance, but package holidays are cheaper when booked last minute.

THE ONLY INVISIBLE FIT & FORGET

HEARING AID

And according to Which? Research, apparently it’s 35% cheaper to fly on a Tuesday than a Friday and 45% more expensive to come back on a Sunday! Remember to book your airport parking in advance to get the best deal and try travelmoneymax.com for the best currency exchange rates. If a holiday abroad is not on your agenda, why not see what this fair and bonny land has to offer? Visitbritain.com is a great website for ideas that include all the best of British culture, countryside, heritage, food and entertainment to suit your budget. Save now and pay less But why bother saving now when you can pay later? With so much credit readily available, it may seem like a quick fix to your financial situation, but a lot of us end up spending far more than we needed to. For example, a £900 holiday paid back on credit over a year could end up costing you £1,057. That’s £150 you could have put towards your next trip. Saving is effectively like paying back each month what you borrowed – before you borrow it. Getting into debt is very easy, and getting out of it can be very difficult. If you are struggling with unmanageable debt, Christians Against Poverty can help. CAP offers free support regardless of age, gender, faith or background. We also run free CAP Money courses to help get your finances more in shape. Check out capuk.org for more information; or for help today with unmanageable debt, call 0800 328 0006.

Three Simple Steps to Dramatically Improve Your Appearance Sometimes we fall into a beauty routine. We become comfortable with the way we dress, style our hair and wear our make up. It becomes such a ritual that we stop looking at ways we can change our looks or freshen our appearance. There are some simple things you can do to dramatically improve your appearance and revitalise your looks without having to change your core sense of style or personal taste. Little things can make a big difference, not only in the way you look, but the way you feel. Sometimes changing it up a bit is all you need feel younger, smile more and generally radiate a little more brightly. Start with your smile. A bright smile is often overlooked. As we get older, we lose the routine of six month check ups at the dentist. If it’s been a while for you, pop into the dentist for a cleaning and have you teeth checked. You probably haven’t even noticed how dull your teeth have become, but once you have them professionally polished, you’ll see the difference right away.

Show off your legs and give yourself a quick tan. A little illuminator or mineral make up mixed with your favourite moisturiser makes a fantastic and radiant bronzer for your legs. Put away those tights and show off your legs the next time you wear a skirt, by mixing up your own temporary self tanner. Flutter those lashes! Take the plunge with a nice long pair of false eyelashes to brighten up your peepers. False eyelashes are easy to apply and will instantly transform the way your eyes look. Fluttering those beautiful lashes can increase your sense of flirtatiousness as well, so why not get bold and add some dramatic colour while you’re at it. False eyelashes are a great way to add a little glamour for both your look and personality and pull you out of your regular routine.

How Aloe Vera helped my ‘nearest and dearest’! If you have read any of my earlier articles, you will know that Aloe Vera is so much more than Sun-cream and toilet paper! You can drink Aloe Vera and you can apply it on your skin. From gums to bums, it can help with so many issues so here are just a few. 1. For me personally, I have found it amazing for helping me to go to the loo. After a hysterectomy I was almost permanently constipated and spent a lot of time bloated and uncomfortable - sometimes in agony. Drinking Aloe Vera sorted that for me and I can now go every day without any discomfort at all. 2. My husband fell in love with Aloe Vera when he decided that he desperately needed to lose weight. Neither of us have ever dieted or calorie counted and thought dieting had to be eating salads, lose weight then stop eating salads and put the weight on again. How wrong we were. There is a Cleanse and Detox programme using Aloe Vera as a key ingredient and my husband has now lost 2 stone and only has a few pounds to go before reaching his ideal weight! 3. My Dad was recently diagnosed Diabetic, partly due to the fact that exercise was near impossible for him as he has arthritis in his hips and knees so exercising was really painful. He started drinking Aloe Vera, which also had MSM Glucosamine and Chondroitin in. He also used an Aloe rub with MSM to work from the outside. Now my Mum and Dad can go for a walk everyday! 4. One of my close friends asked if I could help her with digestive problems. She said she has daily bloating and there are many foods that she cannot eat as it just makes her condition chronic. She started drinking the Aloe Vera gel drink and not only did it ease the bloating but there are many foods she just couldn’t tolerate that she can now eat in small quantities!

5. Another of my close friends has the worst case of Psoriasis I have ever seen. His skin is not only dry, it cracks and bleeds and looks really nasty and sore. After 6 weeks of using an Aloe Vera creme that also contains bee Propolis (which bees use to make the hive antiseptic for the Queen), his skin is healed and just ever so slightly pink. No more flaking here! 6. My son has had gum disease for years. Every time he goes to the dentist, he has to see the Hygienist. Until last time, when his dentist complimented him on his oral hygiene! What had he done different? He changed his tooth paste to an Aloe Vera tooth gel. Aloe Vera kills bacteria and stops plaque build up and prevents Gingivitis. There is even a killer whale that has the same tooth gel! Can’t be bad. I could go on; but if you think Aloe Vera is good for burns, especially sunburn. You would be right. If you think it is great for soothing a sore bum (or piles) you would be right there too; but it is so much more. If you have a specific need, maybe Aloe could help you too? by Deb Pickering

Hull & East Riding Mumbler As the mum of an energetic 4 year old and an inquisitive 11 month old. I used to struggle to find things to do with my children, I looked on lots of websites and asked around then usually found out about something after it had happened. So I decided to do something about it…. and the idea for a local website for local mums was born. I began researching everything to do with young children in Hull and the East Riding, a huge internet search followed by a lot of phoning around, visiting places and collecting leaflets. I was truly amazed at the vast amount of things we have on our doorstep. From playgroups and classes to local attractions and events for families, there is a staggering amount going on in Hull and the surrounding areas. In March 2015 the Hull & East Riding Mumbler website was finally launched. It lists weekly playgroups and classes by area and day of the week so they’re easy to search. There are Days Out ideas split into sections such as walks, museums and attractions and special events on an Events Calendar. There’s also loads of other useful stuff I wanted to know as a mum such as local kids party providers, mums fitness and jobs for mums too. I’ve discovered this is a fantastic place to raise a family with so much going on. Over the coming months I’ll be sharing some of Mumbler’s favourite local days out and things to do. Robots Invade Hull!

Better known for his edgy images as O-Ten Photography, Chris Oaten has now branched out with his own t-shirt company called Mechanical-Me, mixing 1950’s sci-fi images with his high impact photography and striking graphic prints. Hull Mag catches up with Chris to find out more. HM: Why have you embarked on creating a t-shirt business? Chris: To me it was a natural progression from creating the photographic images and then displaying them onto another format and t-shirts are a universal way of displaying many great images on live models across the globe. HM: Why did you choose to create 50’s sci-fi and robot t-shirts? Chris: From being a little boy I have always loved ‘B’ movies like The Day The Earth Stood Still, The Earth Dies Screaming, The Night Caller, etc. In the 1950’s, CGI didn’t exist, so everything you saw you knew had to be physically created including the sets and costumes for the monsters and aliens. Most were created using a very small budget, which made them all the more exciting and innovative, as limitations encourage you to be more creative instead of just relying on the latest expensive technology and blue/green screens. The imagery has a very organic feel to me and the films are naturally atmospheric, so I wanted to capture this feel onto t-shirts for others to enjoy too. HM: Where did you get all the images of robots from? Chris: I photographed a selection of my personal robot collection and they were placed onto a Japanese flag background to give them impact on a t-shirt, then I chose a selection of O-Ten photographs using slogans as a voice to the image. The graphic images, Voltron, Collateral and the MM logo, were created by Scott Wigglesworth whom I commissioned, as I knew these images would need a lot more illustration, which is what Scott is exceptional at. HM: Was it an easy task to choose which images to use for the t-shirts? Chris: I needed to make sure all the images captured what

I wanted to express and to make sure they looked striking on t-shirts, so I went through thousands of images until I cut them down to the chosen few. It wasn’t just a case of choosing an image, as a lot of the images used have slogans; the Adam Ant style photo says “Ridicule is nothing to be scared of” and a female Joker-esque image of Micci saying “Remind me to smile”. They all needed to create an image for people to buy into. HM: How well are these t-shirts being received so far? Chris: People are loving them! From the graphic prints to the photography to the robots, people find what they want, it is great to see others enjoying them. The Japanese in particular are loving the robots, especially the Tetsujin robot as this is a classic Japanese sci-fi robot. I am very surprised how well they are being received for a new company, it shows how bang on trend these t-shirts are with all the latest sci-fi movies such as Ex-Machina and the anticipation of the new Star Wars film. HM: What are your plans for MechanicalMe? Chris: I would like to get these t-shirts into high street stores later in the year. Plus I shall keep adding to the collection and building up the website so people will have an even greater choice of prints to choose from. I am in the process of promoting Mechanical-Me further, but I do not want to tempt fate by revealing anything as yet. HM: Where can people buy your t-shirts? Chris: By visiting the Mechanical-Me website, www.mechanical-me.co.uk, where you can see the full range of t-shirts both for men and women. HM: Chris has kindly donated a Voltron t-shirt as a prize for the Mechanical-Me competition. To enter visit MechanicalMe’s website and tell HullMag what is the name of She’s Got Claws’ latest EP? Answer and your shirt size on a postcard to: Robot Comp, 31 Elm Drive, Cherry Burton HU17 7RJ - Name, Address & contact telephone number. Draw closes May31st.

The Creative & Cultural Column by Alan Raw

Cultural Powerhouse in the East? No I’m not thinking about China, Japan or South Korea. I’m thinking about East Hull. What do people in other parts of the country (or in other countries) say when you tell them you’re from Hull? Is there perhaps an incompleteness in the story that Hull tells itself, and tells the world about itself? Our dominant story is one of exploitation of the seas, the bravery of those that fished in them; of curious customs; a dead bod, WWII bombing; and of a road that the collapsing trawler industry and social engineering eviscerated. The road I refer to is, of course, Hessle Road. And if you don’t yet know the Hessle Road story, I think you should. There are some excellent books and DVDs out there to get you started. My first job was at Clothing House on Hessle Road in the mid eighties, I lived on Welstead Street and loved it. The Hessle Road story is a fascinating story, a great story and a key part of the Hull story; but it isn’t the only story that Hull has to tell. Away from the great river, with its docks and ports, there were factories that sold their goods across the world. Garden village in East Hull (still a paragon of social housing), the nationally renowned Ferens art gallery and the James Reckitt library on Holderness Road all still demonstrate the social conscience & cultural powerhouse of East Hull in its heyday. While Hessle Road and the West of the city, where I still live, have captured the public, social and historical imagination, significant achievements in the East of the city seem to have been largely forgotten. My Dad worked on the dock in his youth, but he also got to play cricket thanks to organised teams and clubs of the internationally successful land based industries of our city. The Hessle Road story is such a good one that it is hardly surprising that it has tended to eclipse all others. Battling the elements to the point of risking death daily is a bit more interesting than pursuing a steady career on the other side of the River Hull. Working on trawlers may not be your ideal lifestyle choice, but it makes a damn good read. In comparison, enlightened capitalists investing in housing, night classes for workers and the cultural life of the city seems a tad dull. So we need to consider the stories we want to tell to the rest of the world, and how we want to tell them. There are the stories whereby we entertain, and there are stories that explain who we are. Many of us do, of course, have proud connections to fishing; but many of us also have connections to building other world leading industries. The cliché of our city and its people smelling of fish is just that, a cliché. Of course, there’s some truth in it. It’s part of our past and albeit, in a limited way, part of our present. But it’s not the whole story; either of us or our city.

Thomas Robinson Ferens Chairman Reckitt and Sons, He gave Hull over £1m (equivalent to £45m today) funding the city’s art gallery and the formation of Hull University.

So for starters, please someone out there, remind us of the story of East Hull, including how Reckitt’s Blue became one of the first international brands, and how some of those profits went into making Hull a better and more cultured city. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t expect that the Holderness story will ever surpass that of Hessle Road and I never want it to. There’s a reason my childhood Sunday afternoons were filled with Hollywood Westerns and not Hollywood Easterns. I’m just saying credit where it’s due. Contact Alan at: www.alanraw.com

Thomas Ferens - A Potted History: He was born Thomas Robinson Ferens in New Shildon on May 4, 1847. By the age of 20, the young Ferens had acquired three of his lifelong passions: he was a stout adherent to the Wesleyan faith, he was a loud advocate for longer education, and he was a keen promoter of the skill of shorthand. In 1868, he saw an advert for the post of shorthand and confidential clerk to James Reckitt, in Hull. He applied and was offered the £70-a-year job. Within six years, he was married - to a local grocer’s daughter - and promoted to works manager. In 1889, he became managing director and driving force. In 1906, he succeeded in his second attempt to become Liberal MP for East Hull. He started Ferens Art Gallery with a £30,000 endowment. He gave a £250,000 gift to set up a university in Hull. In 1927, he was the university’s first president, and to this day its motto is a Latin nod to its founding father: “Lampada Ferens”, meaning “carrying the lamp of learning”. When he died in 1930, the lad who arrived in Hull with half-a-crown in his pocket had given away more than a million pounds. The city scrapped plans to name a new road Quality Street and called it instead Ferensway. Hull Civic Society says he is “the most outstanding example of the public-spirited self-made man in Hull’s history”.

Travel

Vietnam & Cambodia...

WOW! I have just had the most amazing enriching 18 days in this wonderful part of the world. Each day just brought a completely new experience. I will try to give you a short insight although I could do with pages. The historic old fashioned capital city of Hanoi with it’s millions of cycles felt to me more like China years ago! Travelling out of the city to Halong Bay it was noticeable that the farmland was all tendered by hand not a machine in sight. UNESCO Halong Bay offers a relaxing break sailing amongst stunning scenery. Here we visited a fabulous cave system on foot and enjoyed Kayaking. A short internal flight and we arrived in cosmopolitan Ho Chi Minh City still called Saigon locally and you would think a different country, bright lights, a real party atmosphere, Honda’s replacing rickshaws and bicycles of the north! We visited the nearby Cu Chi War Tunnels plus free time to visit the city sights & markets. Travelling through the countryside the farmers had machines, unbelievable difference yet still the same country! Joining our River ship it was good to unpack our cases on our lovely ship for the coming week. Sailing upstream from wide to narrow waters we visited floating villages and towns built on stilts. We had talks on board about the river and how the local communities exist and cope with the changes in river levels. The flooding season in our summer sees a huge rise in waters hence the need for residents to either live in floating or stilted houses. The fishing is very important to their existence and the floods at the moment bring an abundance of fish but they fear in the future this may change with the damming up stream. We really did see life along the banks, stopping at villages where mud steps had been cut in the bank for us to get ashore. We met happy smiling, friendly locals and experienced all sorts of local transport! Arriving in Cambodia could this be a let down? Definitely not the diversity of this holiday just continued. The sad side to Cambodia is their recent history of the Khmer Rouge, the killing fields & S21 prison brought this home to me. On a happier note we visited the magnificent Royal Palace in Phnom Penh, its bustling city centre and huge market. Then out into the countryside, we were welcomed by local schools and cottage industries. At a temple we had the honour of a Buddhist blessing and the opportunity to learn of the monks day to day lives. Arriving in Siam Reap this was a wonderful place to finish our tour. The area has amazing, ancient temples each one fascinating & different. Angkor Wat at sunrise a must ,my favourite photo - Angkor Thom. Doing The Business MOTIVATIONAL ADVICE FROM AWARD-WINNING BUSINESS COACH PAM FEATHERSTONE

Understanding People

As we go through life and business, we tend to operate in a transactional manner. The way we view the world is typically based upon logic. We explain things in a rational way. For example, if you pay someone to do a job, they’ll do it. Offer what people want at a reasonable price and they’ll buy it. The trouble is that actually we are dealing with other human beings, and human beings are not based on logic, we are based on emotion. Motivation is much more about emotion than about logic. People only do things when they are motivated. To be motivated people need to feel like doing something not just think about it. We can temporarily think and do but ultimately we need to feel like doing something too, otherwise it is usually not sustainable. So if you want someone to work for you and do things the way you want them done, at the time you want them done, you need to make sure that they are motivated correctly. If you want people to buy from you and keep buying, you need to make sure that they are motivated that way. If you want people to trust you, help you, like you… you need to make sure that they are appropriately motivated through emotion. The key to all this involves knowing, and liking, people. By ‘knowing’ I do not mean that you know that they exist, I mean you really get to know what matters to them. When you know what matters to people, you can start to understand them. When you understand people, you can find ways to help them. When we get down to the root of it, business is about helping people. In more logical terms, it is about delivering a product or service that people need or want, solving a problem for them, in a way that they like through emotional connection. Businesses often fail – either completely (they cease trading) or partially (they make less profit than they could do) – because they lose sight of the fundamental point, ie helping people. They get too caught up in their own internal needs and wants, or they fail to understand what matters to their customers. This can be perceived as indifference. When this happens, customers buy less or stop buying altogether. The key to success in business and relationships with your friends and family is understanding people: Understand what really matters to them and find a way of meeting their needs. It’s always a balance. Ask yourself, do you know what really matters to an individual? If not, find out, then act upon the information, guided, of course, by what matters to you.

Caring for your Roses

or garden compost before planting will help to ensure strong growth.

After fifty years of intensive breeding, David Austin’s English Roses combine the beautiful forms and wonderful fragrances of old roses with the wider colour range and repeat-flowering nature of modern roses. Their Rose Garden exhibit at the last Chelsea Flower Show was awarded a Gold. This takes their total to eighteen gold medals at this prestigious flower show. As a group, English Roses are healthy, reliable and very easy to grow. They quickly form magnificent, shapely shrubs, or many can be trained as short climbers.

Planting On arrival, plant as soon as possible, never allowing the roots to dry out. When planted the base of the stems should be about 3” (7.5cm) below ground level. If immediate planting is impossible, keep the roses in the sealed bag or box in a cold but frost free place for no more than two weeks or heel the roses in. We recommend Start when planting. Feeding All roses, especially the repeat flowering varieties, greatly appreciate the application of fertilizer. We use David Austin Rose Food here at the nursery and apply it to all the roses at the start of the growing season (March or April in the UK) and again in June to the repeat-flowering varieties. Many other fertilizers are suitable. Please follow the recommendations on the packet for the rate and frequency of application. Excessive nitrogen can make roses more susceptible to both pests and diseases. Mulching and Watering Roses particularly appreciate a moist and cool root run which is easily attainable by generous mulching in spring and occasional deep waterings. This is particularly important in climates with hot, dry summers where the waterings should be frequent enough to keep the soil moist at all times.

Choosing a Variety Your choice of rose is very personal. Make sure that the dimensions of the rose suit its position, although please bear in mind that the dimensions given are approximations. The actual sizes that each rose will reach will vary, depending on factors such as the soil type, fertility and moisture levels, the amount of sunlight and the way you prune your roses. Planting Position Select a site with at least a few hours of sun each day where the roots of the rose will not be in competition with the roots of other plants, especially trees and hedges. The exception to this rule are the ramblers which grow well near to trees.

Healthy Roses The best way to keep your plants free from pests and diseases is to grow them as well as possible, however, an occasional spray can be very beneficial. The most effective sprays are those at the start of the season before symptoms develop, but beware of frosts the night after spraying – they will scorch the leaves badly. Systhane is best for combating rust and blackspot. Uncle Tom’s Rose Tonic or SB Plant Invigorator, which are both foliar feeds, help control disease. SB Plant Invigorator is also effective against pests.

Planting Distances If you have the space English Roses, Old Roses and other Shrub Roses look superb planted in groups of three of one variety. They will then grow together to form one dense shrub, which will provide a more continuous display and make a more definite statement in the border. We suggest planting approximately 18” (45cm) apart within the group. Adjacent plants of neighbouring varieties should be planted approximately 2’ 6” to 3’ (75-100cm) away. For hedges for maximum effect, plant fairly close together 18” (45cm). Soil Type Roses will grow in a wide range of soils, but whatever type they do appreciate good soil preparation. The addition of a generous quantity of well rotted manure

May Gardening Advice

Beware treacherous late frosts and keep vulnerable plants and new shoots protected at night if frost is forecast. Don’t be tempted to put out tender bedding until the middle of the month and even then be prepared to cover it if necessary. Continue with the spring cleaning. Hoe your borders to get rid of weeds before they take hold (ideally on a dry day to desiccate the victims) - annual weeds such as bitter cress and groundsel are enough of a nightmare without allowing them to go forth and multiply by seeding. If it’s dry, attack ground elder and the like with systemic weed killer painted onto the leaves. Remember these systemic weed killers are indiscriminate and will kill anything they contact. Dandelions are a monstrous nuisance at this time of year - if you don’t have time to deal with them terminally, at least chop their heads off before they set seed. Water is a precious commodity - instigate good practices such as using kitchen and bath water (as long as it is neither too dirty, greasy nor full of detergent) for watering, collect rainwater and investigate ways to recycle water for your irrigation. Automatic watering systems are economical with water, as well as convenient! The trick with watering is to water thoroughly once or twice a week rather than little and often (containers etc. do need watering every day). Mulch away while you can still see what you are doing and before the herbaceous growth really takes off. Use your own garden compost or leaf mould, well-rotted manure, the contents of out-of-date grow bags or readymade soil conditioner. Now the soil is warming up and things are starting to grow, add general purpose fertiliser before covering with mulch especially in borders, the fruit and vegetable patch and containers. If you have already mulched, draw it back (if possible), tease the soil a little, add fertiliser and replace the mulch.

Heritage Landscape Centre celebrates 21 years of trading. In 1994 Ian Ashbridge started Heritage Block Paving from his home in Kirkella offering block paving services, mostly to the domestic market but also a small amount of slab paving for commercial clients. In 1998, as the business grew, Ian decided to study Garden Design at Bishop Burton College. This then meant that he could take on garden design and build projects, from start to finish, something he is still very passionate about today! It was therefore no surprise in 2001 when Ian and his wife Martine (who also works in the business) opened the Heritage Landscape Centre, at Gibson Lane, Melton to further compliment the services they were offering to their ever growing customer base. With the new landscape centre, came additional staff, to not only assist with the block paving and landscaping contracts but also to offer customer assistance in choosing the right products for their garden and landscaping requirements. Since 2004 the business has steadily grown with additional land being purchased to extend the Landscape Centre, provide covered display areas, extra car parking and the addition

of the aquatics centre and then in 2009 the building of Season’s Café. The café took 18 months to build and now offers a fabulous range of home cooked food, light bites, breakfast and afternoon tea within the relaxing atmosphere of the Landscape Centre. Season’s café is also a wonderful venue for private parties, weddings, birthdays etc. and you are guaranteed a warm welcome. 21 years later, the Heritage Landscape Centre boasts a wide range of everything you could need to complete your garden project. Greenhouses, water features, sheds and summerhouses, scrubs, plants, trees, natural stone products and aggregates from leading suppliers and the largest selection of David Austen roses in East Yorkshire can all be found on site and if you fancy an instant lawn, why not consider artificial turf, long lasting and you never need to get the mower out again! So whether you are looking to revive your drive, want a complete garden makeover, or just need a few plants for the garden, pop along to the Heritage Landscape centre. Ian, Martine and their knowledgeable staff, will be only too happy to help.

margin and no-one picks up a further point but realistically the game is over for them. They could still come to the KC seeking the first of these victories so we cannot expect a walk-over.

Could we lose at home to Burnley and limp towards relegation again? Just like the end of 2009-10 season.

On the positive side three of Sunderland’s four fixtures are away games at Everton, Arsenal and Chelsea plus a visit from Leicester looking to secure their survival. Added to this is a Newcastle side in complete disarray and losing seven consecutive matches. Does this sound familiar? We could be playing Manchester United and hearing of the Geordie relegation in a similar fashion to 2008-09.

Both of these scenarios could return this season. After the Arsenal defeat we have a one point lead over Sunderland who have a game in hand, though with an inferior goal difference. A worrying fixture list for the Wearsiders looks to be too difficult for them to surmount.

East Stand Views...

We now need to take points from Spurs or Manchester United and defeat our bogey side Burnley next week. One win for Sunderland out of four remaining fixtures and failure to gain any more points could bring relegation. Even more galling is that this side managed to grab an equaliser in the recent home game when we wasted half a dozen opportunities to bury them by halftime! The phrase too good to go down could raised and we can look at the names in the squad, refer to injuries and discuss the games we have thrown away leading positions but its down to the players of Hull City to fight for survival. Two victories looked unlikely prior to the Crystal Palace game but with the resurgence of Leicester, Villa and lesser extent Sunderland we need a third or even fourth victory to be sure. It would appear that Burnley will be more or less down by the time we play them. Mathematically they could survive if they won three games by a massive

To Contact

Despite all of these worries we do actually look like a side who are capable of survival. We could argue we should be a mid-table side from the the silly points frittered away throughout the season but that’s currently irrelevant. From a position where you couldn’t see a goal coming they have won two games and out battled Palace and Liverpool. The defence looks solid, Huddlestone & Livermore have stepped up a gear (or two), Aluko looks a threat and Steve Harper looks secure in the goal. The return of Harper could be the decision which has saved the season. He has actually saved good attempts on goal unlike McGregor who has spilled too many shots and more importantly the defence has much more confidence in the man behind them. We may have drawn 2-2 with Chelsea but for just one of McGregor’s recent fumbles. Survival is in their hands and possibly the return of Jelavic could be the final boost we need. Let him loose on Burnley . He may not be fully fit (again) but is the man most likely to take any opportunities. This season has been tiring for supporters and we just want to get to the finishing line and regroup for next year. Get the walking wounded fixed for another season and build for a third season. One question could be

More significantly the ownership has now come under further questioning by fans. The on-going name change issue, Airco Arena evictions and Away fans subsidies have now brought forward an ‘Allam Out’ campaign. With three games left to survive the bigger priority is on the pitch and backing the team. If there are potentially three groups interested in buying the club then the biggest priority is ensuring we are saleable. If we go down then you cannot see any take-over with a massive drop in status, millions to pay out in transfer fees and 50% of the revenue to finance the club. The club have announced that players will be taking a 50% wage cut if relegated so maybe that could be the thing which has finally made the penny drop!? They may have finally woken up to the concept of a potential drop of £20,000 a week or £80,000 a month!? Compare these salaries to those of the players from the ‘Great Escape’ of 1998-99 and lets hope they battle as hard in the next three games.

Could we be sat in the stands waiting for good news elsewhere when we play Manchester United in the last game of the season? Just like the end of 2008-09 season

our medical/fitness support. So many players seem to get injured, never seem to get fully fit or never seem to get closer to a return for instance Fryatt, Aluko and Diame. Does our treatment side need a review? We have the best squad ever on paper but so many seem to have got silly injuries or even get repeat injuries in training matches!

FIONA’S FOOD FOR THOUGHT By Fiona Dwyer, broadcast journalist, PR & media consultant, slave to 2 children and a husband.

SUPERMARKET RECEIPTS AND VOUCHERS

I think it’s great that supermarkets are making us all think about reusing our carrier bags in an effort to save the environment by either making us pay for them or encouraging us to buy lifelong bags. What I don’t understand is why they don’t think more about all the paper they use when handing over our receipts. It seems that it’s no longer enough to simply give us a receipt for the goods we have bought. Oh no. They now insist on giving us four or more other bits of paper telling us about their latest offer for online shopping, how we can get double points on our loyalty cards when we next shop (as long as it’s within 2 weeks), money off coupons if we spend a certain amount of money on our next shop or some other advertising spiel! These offers tend to be linked to our loyalty cards, for which we provide an email address when we first sign up, so why don’t they just email us the offers rather than wasting all that paper? I don’t know about you but most of these bits of paper go into the bin or they end up living in my handbag for far too many months to admit, at which point I have a good clear out because I can’t find anything in it anymore! And, of course, none of the above offers can be used because they are all out-of-date!

AND WHILE WE’RE ON THE SUBJECT… Continuing my slight supermarket rant, I also wanted to ask what you thought about being told how much you have saved shopping with them rather than one of their competitors. Whilst I think it’s always rather nice to know you’ve bought your groceries a little bit cheaper (and to be honest who doesn’t feel a little bit smug about it ?!), why is it that they then offer us a “money off” voucher for that amount to use on your next shop? You either end up losing the coupon or leaving it at home when you next pop in, by which time it’s out-of-date because, yet again, it has to be used within about 2 weeks. If they were really serious about giving you your money back they would take it off your bill at the same shop!

BEDTIME CHATTERBOX “Anyone who thinks the art of conversation is dead should try talking to a child at bedtime!” I read this on the Netmums website and it made me laugh so I just had to share it with you - because it is so true and I’m sure it will resonate with lots of parents and grandparents out there!
