Hello Hull,

Welcome to the sixth edition of your new HULLMAG. We have another feature packed magazine for your this month. With Christmas on its way and Autumn here, we are taking a look at some Christmas themes, as now is the time that many people start to do their present buying ( I, however will leave mine until the last minute then get totally frustrated when everything is sold out!). We also have features on GM Foods and other nasties, Politicians who we suspect are becoming the new rockstars and many other interesting topics plus our regular What’s On and Club & Group Listings so you and your families should never be at a loose end. You won’t have to go far either, as Hull and the surrounding area has loads of things going on during the coming month like the Jazz Festival, some great Comedy down at Fruit and numerous bands and musicians playing across the city. I shall be down at the Prospect Centre cheering on my personal favourites (Throwing Words) in the semi finals and hopefully finals of the Hook Factor. It would be great to see some of you readers at the event. It is for charity and great value at only a fiver. And don’t forget to grab hold of a copy of the new Christmas single from local talent, ‘She’s Got Claws’ and help it get to the Christmas number one slot.. (well if things were not fixed by the industry it could do it), anyway, it’s a cracking little tune and it gets my vote. Don’t forget to ‘like’ our facebook page and leave us your comments!

Flamenco in Hull Spanish Passion thrives in Hull the new home of duende!

Duende or tener duende (“having duende”) loosely means having soul, a heightened state of emotion, expression and authenticity, often connected with flamenco. [1] The artistic and especially musical term was derived from the duende, a fairy or goblin-like creature in Spanish mythology. Passionate devotees of flamenco have been dancing in Hull for over five years and, Hull being what it is, the passion continues. They have done many public performances such as Hull’s Freedom festivals and Lord Mayor’s Parade as well as numerous other prestigious charity events where the group has been well received.

Companies approaching residents about Council Tax bandings

Hull City Council has been made aware of a number of householders in the city who are being approached by companies offering to appeal their Council Tax banding on their behalf. This is on the provision that if they pay supply their bank details and £30 upfront they would be able get their banding reduced and a large refund. This has nothing to do with the Council or the Valuation Office and may be a scam. Hull City Council would like to point out that anyone wishing to appeal against their current Council Tax banding should do so themselves through the Valuation Office Agency for no charge. If the appeal is successful a refund of any portion of Council Tax overpaid will be made by Hull City Council. If you choose to ask a company to deal with the appeal for you, you may be expected to pay a percentage of any refund to them and possibly additional costs. It must be stressed that by placing an appeal your Council Tax banding may also increase. People wishing to view Council Tax bandings can do so by logging on to www.voa.gov.uk The contact details to appeal against a banding by telephoning the Valuation Office Agency on 03000 501 501, or in writing to: Valuation Office Agency

Not all everyone likes to dance in public and many of our students prefer to simply express their love for this truly powerful dance form at the well-attended classes held at The Space Dance Studio. The beginners’ class will comprise basic flamenco dance techniques (arm movements, wrist-curls and footwork) along with invigorating exercises with Sevillana choreography. The Improvers’ class will aim to introduce more advanced techniques and work on choreography for Solea por Bulerias. Book now for Flamenco Dance classes on Thursday 7th November. There are two choices, or of course, both, classes: Beginners from 7pm to 8pm and Improvers from 8pm to 9pm. Charges are £6 per class or £10 for both. Please note however, that the Solea por Bulerias is not suitable for complete beginners. The friendly and inclusive classes take place at The Space Dance Studio, 107-109 Grafton Street (just off Newland Avenue - opposite The Grafton pub).

Can you ride the house price wave? It’s not only the house builders that stand to stage a recovery

Regardless of the arguments over the rights and wrongs of government-subsidised mortgage schemes, the simple truth is that the housing market is linked to the health of the economy. Regardless of the arguments over the rights and wrongs of government-subsidised mortgage schemes, the simple truth is that the housing market is linked to the health of the economy. Companies connected either directly or indirectly to the housing market are commonly referred to as cyclical stock. In other words, when the economy does well, these companies tend to do well. But when it is in the doldrums, these companies tend to perform less well. Since the collapse of Lehman Brothers (which now seems like an eternity away) and the subsequent sovereign debt crisis in the eurozone, the housing market has unquestionably been adversely affected. This is primarily because of reluctance by banks to put their money on the line by lending to prospective homeowners. But there are signs that a recovery in lending is under way, thanks in part to government initiatives to absorb some of the risk. It is also because banks are feeling more optimistic about the future.

Buying shares in housebuilders could be one way of investing in a housing recovery. But there are other ways of benefiting from a real-estate revival. Travis Perkins is a supplier of materials to the building trade. Performance at the company has been affected by the economic slowdown. In 2009, profits fell around 15 per cent but have rebounded since. Profits this year are expected to rise around 5 per cent and a further 10 per cent in 2014. Estate agents may be worth looking at too, given that wherever there is a housing transaction an estate agent is

It should be said that even without the boost from the government, housebuilders entered the economic down cycle by battening down the hatches, slashing debt and focusing on margins rather than flooding the market with affordable homes. They adjusted quickly to the creditstrapped economy by directing resources at the more expensive end of the market, where activity remained buoyant. After all, why would housebuilders build cheaper houses that they can’t sell? Thing is, the market has, to some extent, already priced in a recovery for housebuilders. Shares in many construction companies have risen quite substantially since 2011. For instance, shares in Barratt Developments that only cost around 94p in 2011 would set you back 300p today. On the face of it, shares in housebuilders look to have recovered significantly. As a group, though, housebuilders are still only valued at around 12 times earnings, which does not look expensive. What’s more, the market is expecting profits at many housebuilders to rise significantly over the next couple of years. For instance, profits at Taylor Wimpey are expected to improve 40 per cent this year and around 26 per cent the year after. If the forecasts for UK housebuilders pan out as expected, their current valuations would look quite modest.

Gardening jobs for November As the first winter frosts nip the air, there are still a few jobs to be done before putting the garden to bed

Not so slowly now, the remains of the last season are making their way back to earth. Cast your eye up and newly bare branches reveal the sky while, at our feet, the leaves are browning. These are the first few weeks of winter and I use my time carefully, letting the last of the autumn run its course and targeting energies to set things up for the months ahead. RAKE’S PROGRESS Only collect leaves where absolutely necessary. Don’t leave them too long on the lawns or they will kill the grass underneath. Where they have fallen in the beds and have not drifted too deeply, leave the earthworms to pull them into their burrows and to rot on the surface. This is not laziness but necessary to keep the cycle replenished. However, where leaves have drifted deeply or are smothering smaller plants or silver Mediterranean herbs and perennials, clear to keep the plants dry and airy. Sweeping leaves off paths and terraces is all you need to keep the garden looking cared for and covers for a wealth of disorder in the beds. PERENNIAL QUESTION If you are tidy-minded, it might go against the grain to leave the perennials standing, but in a month’s time you will find that certain plants have made fine winter skeletons and can be left until February or March. Fennel and miscanthus, verbena and teasel make good hibernacula for beneficial insects and their seed keeps the birds going in the cold periods as well as providing winter interest.

TOP OF THE HEAP If you have the room, create a separate leaf heap rather than simply adding leaves to compost, as leaf mould is a luxury soil improver if you are growing lilies in pots. The fibrous nature of leaf mould retains To Contact

House & Garden moisture and enables free drainage, which means it also makes a fine mulch for woodland treasures such as trillium or wood anemone. A leaf heap can easily be constructed using chicken wire and posts, or you can bag your leaves and put them in an out-of-the-way corner. Make sure you puncture the bags to prevent them from becoming anaerobic, as the bacteria that turn them to leaf mould need air to flourish. A leaf heap should take a year to rot down so empty now to make way for this year’s fall. LOVE ME TENDER In the colder parts of the country, first frosts will have blackened the dahlias. If you haven’t done so already, move tender perennials into the shelter of a cool greenhouse, frame or garage and water less to bring on a state of semi dormancy. In colder districts, tuberous-rooted cannas and dahlias should be dug up and stored in just-damp compost in a cool, airy place. In warmer areas, an ample mulch of compost or leaf mould should protect them and they can stay put. IT’S A WRAP For those growing exotic plants outside, protect the “hardy” bananas (Musa basjoo) and tree ferns by wrapping their trunks and crowns in straw or bubblewrap and hessian. Melianthus are at their best this late in the season, so work straw around the base of their stems and allow the frost to blacken the tops in time.

9

CUT AND DRIED The window between now and the end of the year is the best time to take hard-wood cuttings. As soon as the leaves have fallen, take cuttings at pencil length and pencil thickness. Make a clean cut immediately below a bud and a sloping cut above to tell top from bottom. Plunge to half their depth in compost or a trench in open ground if you don’t have a frame. Vines, cornus, willow, buddleia and fig will be rooted by spring and ready for potting by mid-summer. GONE WITH THE WIND If you live in a windy area, roses and buddleia can be topped by a third to prevent wind-rock, which can undermine stability over the coming months. A clean cut is advisable, but more accurate pruning can follow on the other side of winter when the sap is rising. Save the prunings for a welcome bonfire and enjoy the end of the day with chestnuts in embers and the last of the season’s potatoes.

Are politicians the new rockstars? I’ve never really looked into politics. It never seemed to matter and I was always too busy. Lately, though, it has become of greater importance to me. I now care. Some bad things are happening, sure, but more to the point politics has taken the form of a national reality show that strives to throw celebrity, not policy, in our faces. Politicians are acting up as the new rock stars and what’s more they’re getting away with it.

outlandishly depraved moments. Blair is known for little else than his decisions over Iraq, especially with recent turmoil in Syria leading the nation – and indeed Parliament itself – to look back in anger once again. Staying in the UK, after all that has been done to equalise society we seem to have reverted back in time with a certain boys’ club in charge. I find the skewed socio-economic spread of our current leaders most distasteful. Thirteen of Cameron’s first front bench were educated at Eton, and 56% are millionaires. It is horrible that 14 out of 20 of Cameron’s donors avoid paying tax by having offshore saving accounts. It’s a snob’s gang: a case of the rich caring for the rich. Cameron releases tax breaks that will benefit a greater number of people in higher income brackets than lower ones. It appears they are writing policy like lyrics and they sing only their own songs.

In Italy, Bunga Bunga Berlusconi was running around like he owned the place and as Italy’s richest man, he pretty much does. He’s had more than 2,500 court appearances in the last 20 years and he still insists he’s never done anything wrong. With a long list of offences, most notably sex with underaged prostitute ‘Miss Ruby’ at one of his notorious ‘bunga bunga’ sex parties, like a 70-year-old super-corrupt Jagger he really is living a life of discreditable behaviour. But for these offences there are many Italians who regard him in quasireligious fervour. He was the sometimes hated, but always celebrated bad-boy of Europe. If these are the stories we see and he remained largely free and powerful, what on earth went on behind closed doors we can only guess. In Greece, lavish overspending with cronyism and corruption is rife on a massive scale. Former finance minister George Papaconstantinou, and others allegedly making massive tax evasions, forging data, and some supposedly rubbing dodgy relatives off the long awaited list of wrong doers. It seems to paint the picture of a handful of people trashing the place and exploiting the rest of Europe with little done to stop them. Russia’s Vlademir Putin, meanwhile, seems to have taken a page out of the British empirical history books in the 19th century. Just as Queen Victoria appealed to a conservative society through its lowest common denominator, Putin decided to gain popularity with a little gay-bashing, stolen straight (excuse the pun) from Margaret Thatcher’s infamous Section 28: that no governmental or educational authority should be seen to promote homosexuality. To be fair, Tony Blair and New Labour introduced a lot of reforms in a subtle and quiet way to help minorities: lowering the age of consent, civil partnership and repealing Section 28, for instance. Guarantees for equal access were all put onto the British statute books. These were all remarkable achievements in their own right, but rock stars are only remembered for their biggest gigs and their most

The Clash: The only band that mattered

These reckless, selfish scandals across Europe, and at home my very real concern for the NHS, for creativity in schools, and for a better Hull, led me to want to look at how our country is run. But, I faced a problem. When looking at actual issues, the world of politics is a lot larger than these petty headline-grabbing stories would suggest. It’s a huge task and with the scandals abounding distracting and deflectingfrom policies, how does one absorb, assimilate and really grasp any understanding? I’m trying out newspapers, stuff online and I’m doing a lot of talking to friends. But it seems very few places delve into the devils in the details. Much of the media, and the politicians themselves, leave policy at a distance. Egotistically, much of the focus is on politicians themselves and one finds that even the scandalless politicians want to be rock stars. The media, of course, loves a tantalising story; they play off characters in tales to sell newspapers and politicians act up to it to sell themselves. They want us to buy into them with a lot of kissing babies and playing guitar, picking fruit at the markets or pointing at fish. It’s this person versus that person and like a political X-Factor it works.

ROCK ‘N’ ROLL

Of course, we shoulder some guilt. On the whole we find this all more interesting than actual policy talks. Politicians welcome that they can be characters in stories, heroes or villains on a stage, and we decide whether we like them or not based on their performances. Being liked is a short cut politicians use to procure our vote and by making us like them it arguably saves a lot of time and energy. All that malarkey of having to explain the tedious details. To be fair, most people just want to pick a person and be comfortable in the knowledge that when the voting comes around they’re doing the right thing. You can see why parties want to leave the details out of the minds of the public. No one likes boring parties. I found a website called voteforpolicies.org. uk, which, using an impartial policy based questionnaire, tells you which party you should back. Of 337,725 completed surveys, the results were 24% for the Green Party, 20.33% for Labour, 17.5% for the Liberal Democrats and 15% for the Conservatives; very different from how our country is being run at the moment. And it seems clear why all but the Green Party would want to put politicians on display than discuss real issues. Can you really blame people for taking the easy option?

perhaps that was becoming facetious, but there is a point. A former Mail Online journalist I spoke with suggested: “[Celebrities] engage us, because they understand entertainment in a way that most politicians don’t. Celebrities who dip into politics are more likely to start from a platform of general popularity. People associate stars with enjoyment.”

ROCK ‘N’ ROLL

It is a hard, genuinely taxing topic, often made dry by all the policies and issues to debate. Conversely, it is an effortless and part-unconscious decision to judge a person instead, especially when they are showing off centre stage, trying to sell themselves. Boris Johnson, as much as people think he acts the buffoon, is, even by people who disagree with him, well liked. Perhaps much of that rests on Have I Got News For You. Boris exemplifies the fact that if you are liked, half the game is already won. It could also be argued, for instance, that Nick Clegg’s headline-grabbing perfomances in the televised election debates were a major contirbuting factor to this Government becoming a coalition. Politicians are considered more and more to be icons – by the media and certainly by their own inflated egos. In the UK, politicians who have only ever been in politics have risen in numbers and a lot of it is showmanship. With lifestyles detached from the population and seemingly getting away with atrocious scandals, politicians are suited rock stars performing on stage. Under bright lights they look over the crowd, winning votes, while the real issues are quietly debated backstage.

Alongside the shocking rock star wannabes across the continent, celebrities too are drawn into politics. Some might say that they are not qualified. But perhaps because of successful primary careers that mean that they are under no obligation to get involved, there is, therefore, a greater authenticity (if not always correctness) to their views. Eddie Izzard stating his intention to run for Mayor Of London 2020 is exciting. Having seen him brilliantly headline a festival stage as the most sought after and talked about act, he truly epitomises rock star. Celebrities can also be used to liven up debate and grasp the attention of the public. Russell Brand on Question Time recently caused a storm; John Lennon once gave peace a chance; Bob Geldof fed the world and revived his fading career as a rock star; Madonna adopted half of Africa. OK,

Maybe this is why I seem to trust some celebrity views over politicians, because of a happier association. Look at the successes of Reagan and Arnie and the lesser-known Czechoslovakian Václav Havel. Obama is one politician who understands entertainment; a real rock star of politics, as opposed to Boris’ more pantomime style. The circular relationship between the media and politicians creates a sensational whirl and leaves the real issues detached and alone. There is potential to counter the biases within the media industry through social media, which may reveal hidden scandals and draw attention to things politicians seek to hide. Image is thus harder to control and minority groups have a platform to shout their causes. And it is with this blossoming development I feel that some of the sincerity might return to the political realm. Passionate public debates are now to be found online where clever independent commentary can be heard. These new added pressures can only be positive if it makes people shape up. I feel so much better now I know more about politics, but also in a way a little less happy. If nothing else these scandalous rock star lifestyles may make more people like me start to look closer at our Government. The saccharine or inspiring celebrity involvement brings politics to the ears of a greater number of our population. This is a good and timely thing. Perhaps through all the rock star behaviour and media parades, a greater number and especially of the youth will take an interest. By encouraging people to take some time to look beneath the façade of the scandal and debauchery, we might just start to find the actual policies worth gossiping over. I’ve begun, and I intend to continue learning. I have realised that this is important, that it does matter and that I really do care. Words by Adam Robinson

In Safe Hands 12th Annual Remembrance Service for Road Crash Victims Hull City Council’s 12th annual service to remember people who have lost their lives on the city’s roads will take place at St Mary’s Church, Lowgate on Sunday 17 November at 2.30pm.

World Day of Remembrance for road traffic victims is the third Sunday in November, and Hull City Council first marked the day in 2002 when the Council opened a remembrance book in St Mary’s Church to record the names of people killed on the city’s roads. At the same time, Hull City Council erected a permanent memorial to victims in Mandela Gardens outside the Streetlife Museum on High Street. Councillor Nadine Fudge, Lord Mayor of Hull and Admiral of the Humber, said: “The service remembers those people killed and injured on our roads and offers a fitting occasion for grieving families and friends to pay their respects to their loved ones. “Thankfully, the number of victims reduces year by year but there are still too many, so this event also serves to send a clear message to all road users to be careful because everyone who uses our roads is a potential victim.” Gary Horth, Transport Development Team Manager, said: “Whilst the City Council has made major progress in road safety and reducing the number of people killed and injured on the city’s roads we understand the trauma that each accident causes. Therefore it’s important that we remember that we all have a responsibility to drive, ride and walk safely.” A Remembrance book is always on display at St Mary’s church and anyone wishing to have the names of their loved one added to the book may do so by calling 01482 300 300.

Daddy’s Little Girl Her hair was up in a pony tail, Her favourite dress tied with a bow. Today was Daddy’s Day at school, And she couldn’t wait to go. But the little girl went to school Eager to tell them all. About a dad she never sees A dad who never calls. There were daddies along the wall in back, For everyone to meet. Children squirming impatiently, Anxious in their seats One by one the teacher called A student from the class. To introduce their daddy, As seconds slowly passed.

At last the teacher called her name, Every child turned to stare. Each of them was searching, A man who wasn’t there. “Where’s her daddy at?” She heard a boy call out. “She probably doesn’t have one,” Another student dared to shout. And from somewhere near the back, She heard a daddy say, “Looks like another deadbeat dad, Too busy to waste his day.” The words did not offend her, As she smiled up at her Mom. And looked back at her teacher, Who told her to go on. And with hands behind her back, Slowly she began to speak. And out from the mouth of a child, Came words incredibly unique. ‘My Daddy couldn’t be here, Because he lives so far away. But I know he wishes he could be, Since this is such a special day. And though you cannot meet him, I wanted you to know. All about my daddy, And how much he loves me so. He loved to tell me stories He taught me to ride my bike. He surprised me with pink roses, And taught me to fly a kite.

We used to share fudge sundaes, And ice cream in a cone. And though you cannot see him. I’m not standing here alone.

You see he is a British soldier And died just this past year When a roadside bomb hit his convoy And taught Britons to fear.

Because my daddy’s always with me, Even though we are apart I know because he told me, He’ll forever be in my heart.

But sometimes when I close my eyes, It’s like he never went away.’ And then she closed her eyes, And saw him there that day.

With that, her little hand reached up, And lay across her chest. Feeling her own heartbeat, Beneath her favourite dress.

And to her mother’s amazement, She witnessed with surprise. A room full of daddies and children, All starting to close their eyes.

And from somewhere here in the crowd of dads, Her mother stood in tears. Proudly watching her daughter, Who was wise beyond her years.

Who knows what they saw before them, Who knows what they felt inside? Perhaps for merely a second, They saw him at her side.

For she stood up for the love Of a man not in her life. Doing what was best for her, Doing what was right.

‘I know you’re with me Daddy,’ To the silence she called out. And what happened next made believers, Of those once filled with doubt.

And when she dropped her hand back down, Staring straight into the crowd. She finished with a voice so soft, But its message clear and loud. ‘I love my daddy very much, He’s my shining star. And if he could, he’d be here, But heaven’s just too far.

Countdown to Christmas

Are real Christmas trees better for the earth than artificial ones?

SPONSORED BY:

DaltonSpire Limited

Environmentalists for whom Christmas trees are an important tradition face a seasonal dilemma: should they buy a real or an artificial tree? Well, according to plant biologist Clint Springer buying a single artificial tree once a decade has a significantly larger carbon footprint than buying a new real tree each year over the same time period. “At this time of year, choosing a real Christmas tree is one way that an average person can make a difference in terms of climate change,” Springer said.

Selecting a greener tree Reviewing the research on the two types of trees, Springer notes that you would have to keep an artificial tree for 20 years before its carbon footprint is smaller than that of 20 real trees. These numbers come from a 2009 study conducted by the consulting firm Ellipsos. “[The] study ... concluded that a seven-foot cut tree’s impact on climate is 60 percent less than a seven-foot artificial tree used for six years. So while cut trees are not carbon-neutral, in terms of carbon-use, they are better than artificial trees.” Artificial trees’ carbon footprints come in large part from the fact that most of them are made in China, and therefore, shipping them around the world consumes enormous quantities of fossil fuels. In addition, said Ellipsos founder Jean-Sebastien Trudel, artificial trees are usually constructed from polyvinyl chloride. This plastic is manufactured from petrochemicals in a fossil-fuel intensive process. In addition, trees made from polyvinyl chloride tend to release volatile organic compounds into the air, often causing respiratory allergies or other distress. According to Springer, many people select artificial trees for reasons that have more to do with price or accessibility than global warming. But many other people, he noted, falsely fear that real trees will give them allergies. “Ultimately, people need to make the choice that makes the most sense for their family,” he said, “but they should keep in mind that real Christmas trees do not trigger allergic reactions. Farm-raised trees are too young to be reproductive in most cases, so pollen is not an issue.” He noted that some people might be sensitive to a real tree’s natural scent. In such cases, he recommends pine trees rather than firs, due to the pine’s weaker scent. The concern that real Christmas trees get moldy is also exaggerated, he said. “From what we know about household allergens like mold spores, a house with a real tree does not usually show a higher rate of indoor air pollution than a house with an artificial tree, because mold spores found on live trees do not usually become air-borne,” Springer said.

Countdown to Christmas

Well, Christmas is fast approaching and we hope to bring you lots of great and original ideas for presents in our Countdown to Christmas feature that we are running from now until the December issue. We all know it’s difficult to buy presents, but who is best? Men or Women? Research reveals that men are just as likely to be presented with unwanted gifts such as hair dye, male make-up and car vacuums, with 10% of men polled saying they will sell unwanted gifts on e-Bay. Women are not perfect present buyers either. They make exactly the same mistakes as men. Research is the simple knack to buying great gifts. Think about things your partner buys for his or herself, as well as their personal style, hobbies and interests. If you pay attention, it becomes obvious. Guessing causes the problems, and choosing gifts just because you like them is a no-no. Your own taste is irrelevant. Ask friends and family for hints and advice. In a recession, spending money on an appropriate and appreciated present is a sound financial transaction. The handbag your partner has been dreaming about for months, or a rare graphic novel by his favourite artist, is the way to go. In this climate, there’s an argument for buying people things they need, as opposed to things they want. Treats like a side of salmon or bottle of champagne may work well for friends or family. Unless someone expressly asks for it, kitchen or household equipment is best avoided. Asking someone outright what they want is a “last resort”. Remember getting a gift wrong leaves both you and the recipient in an awkward position. Getting it right on the other hand, and knowing how delighted your loved ones are with the gifts you’ve chosen, is a fabulous feeling. Just check out the feature in the magazine we have some fantastic shops and businesses right here on our doorstep offering a multitude of gifts that will keep the whole family happy this Christmas. Please remember to mention HullMag when you are buying from our advertisers they need to know that their advertising is working. Happy and successful shopping!

The opening night also features a performance by Welsh harpist Catrin Finch and Senegalese kora player Seckou Keita, a stunning shared musical journey between two world class virtuosos.

The Festival continues on Saturday, 23 November with Saxophone Giants, a tribute to Jazz’s greatest saxophonists. Featuring Jean Toussaint and Keith Loftis, the band will be completed by members of the late, great Abram Wilson’s band. Saturday night concludes with Ginger Baker Jazz Confusion, with the legendary drummer joined by Pee Wee Ellis (James Brown’s MD), Ghanaian percussionist Abass Dodoo and Alec Dankworth.

Sunday, 24 November kicks off with Hull’s own Freedom Chorus, followed by multi award-winning vocalist Ian Shaw, celebrating Joni Mitchell at 70. The festival wraps up with an amazing double bill from award winning vocalist Christine Tobin and her band - A Thousand Kisses Deep, celebrating the songs of Leonard Cohen and other classics, and Sailing to Byzantium, an evocative collection of twelve poems by WB Yeats set to music by Christine.

Healthy Eating News

Nine foods you should never eat again

With With so much misinformation out there about food and how it affects human health, making healthy food choices for you and your family can be difficult and confusing. There are a number of specific foods; however, that you will want to avoid in almost every circumstance because they provide virtually no health benefits while posing plenty of health risks. Here are nine foods you should never eat again if you care about preserving your long-term health:

1) White bread, refined flours. By definition, white bread and refined flours in general are toxic for your body because they have been stripped of virtually all vitamins, minerals, fiber, and other important nutrients. Because of this, the body does not know how to properly digest and assimilate these so-called foods, which can lead to health problems. Refined white flour has also been bleached with chlorine and brominated with bromide, two poisonous chemicals that have been linked to causing thyroid and organ damage. 2) Conventional frozen meals. Most conventionally-prepared frozen meals are loaded with preservatives, processed salt, hydrogenated oils and other artificial ingredients, not to mention the fact that most frozen meals have been heavily pre-cooked, rendering their nutrient content minimal at best (especially after getting microwaved again at home). With the exception of a few truly healthy frozen meal brands such as Amy’s and Organic Bistro, most frozen meals are little more than disease in a box, so avoid them in favour of fresh foods. 3) White rice. Like white bread, white rice has been stripped of most of its nutrients, and separated from the bran and germ, two natural components that make up rice in its brown form. Even so-called “fortified” white rice is nutritionally deficient, as the body still processes this refined food much differently than brown rice, which is absorbed more slowly and does not cause the same spike in blood sugar that white rice does. 4) Microwaveable popcorn. This processed food is a favorite among moviegoers and regular snackers alike, but it is one of the unhealthiest foods you can eat. Practically every component of microwaveable popcorn, from the genetically-modified (GM) corn kernels to the processed salt and preservative chemicals used to enhance its flavor, is unhealthy and disease-promoting. On top of this, microwaveable popcorn contains a chemical known as diacetyl that can actually destroy your lungs. If you love popcorn, stick with organic kernels that you can pop yourself in a kettle and douse with healthy ingredients like coconut oil, grass-fed butter, and Himalayan pink salt. 5) Cured meat products with nitrates, nitrites. Deli meats, summer sausage, hot dogs, bacon, and many other meats sold at the grocery store are often loaded with sodium nitrite and other chemical preservatives that have been linked to

To Contact

causing heart disease and cancer. If you eat meat, stick with uncured, nitrite and nitrate-free varieties, and preferably those that come from organic, grass-fed animals. 6) Most conventional protein, energy bars. By the way they are often marketed, it might seem as though protein and energy bars are a strong addition to a healthy diet. But more often than not, these meal replacements contain processed soy protein, refined sugar, hydrogenated fat, and other harmful additives that contribute to chronic illness. Not all protein and energy bars are bad, of course -- Thunderbird Energetica, Organic Food Bar, Boku Superfood, Vega Sport, PROBAR, and Zing all make healthy protein and energy bars. Just be sure to read the ingredient labels and know what you are buying. 7) Margarine. Hidden in all sorts of processed foods, margarine, a hydrogenated trans-fat oil, is something you will want to avoid at all costs for your health. Contrary to popular belief, butter and saturated fats in general are not unhealthy, especially when they are derived from pastured animals that feed on grass rather than corn and soy. And if animal-based fats are not for you, stick with extra-virgin coconut oil or olive oil rather than margarine. 8) Soy milk and soy-based meat substitutes. One of the biggest health frauds of modern times, the soy craze is a fad that you will want to skip. Besides the fact that nearly all non-organic soy ingredients are of GM origin, most soy additives are processed using a toxic chemical known as hexane, which is linked to causing birth defects, reproductive problems, and cancer. Soy that has not been fermented is also highly estrogenic, which can throw your natural hormone balance out of whack. 9) “Diet” anything. Many so-called “diet” products on the market today contains artificial sweeteners like aspartame (Equal) and sucralose (Splenda), both of which are linked to causing neurological damage, gastrointestinal problems, and endocrine disruption. Many diet products also contain added chemical flavoring agents to take the place of fat and other natural components that have been removed to artificially reduce calorie content. Instead, stick with whole foods that are as close to nature as possible, including highfat foods grown the way nature intended, and your body will respond surprisingly well.

The New 2014 Ford Tourneo The Ford Tourneo Connect is based on the Transit Connect van, but adds rear seats and windows to turn it into a very, very roomy MPV. It’s available as a five-seat, or as a longer, seven-seat version called the Grand Tourneo Connect. There are three engine options; a 99bhp 1.0-litre three-cylinder petrol, a 1.6-litre petrol and a 1.6 diesel in 94bhp and 113bhp forms. The 1.6 petrol is restricted to an automatic gearbox and the Grand Tourneo is diesel only. Prices start from £14,245 for the Tourneo Connect and £16,985 for the Grand.
What’s the new 2014 Ford Tourneo Connect like inside? In a word, huge – and also extremely practical. Those van-like dimensions ensure there’s loads of head- and legroom in

the front, to the extent that even very tall occupants will have more than enough space. That high driving position, together with the Tourneo’s deep windscreen, rear and side windows, help ensure all-round visibility is very good, too. You won’t have any problem getting comfortable, either, as there’s a good amount of adjustment in the steering wheel and driver’s seat. The dashboard isn’t as easy to live with, though, as Ford has stuck with a similar layout found in the C-Max and Focus. That means lots of buttons that are difficult to locate easily on the move.

In the rear, the high roofline continues so headroom stays very generous. It’s a shame the middle seats don’t slide back and forth, but there’s enough and shoulder and legroom for two adults or three children to remain happy on a long journey. Access to the rear is excellent as there are sliding doors on both sides that reveal wide openings. With the rear seats in place, the fiveseat model has more than 500 litres of boot space, courtesy of a practical, square loadbay with low loading lip. However, the large tailgate (on both the Tourneo and the Grand) means you need to leave plenty of room behind when parking in order to get it open. The Grand is 40cm longer than the five-seat version, and the back row of seats can be moved back and forth individually to trade legroom for boot space. Slid all the way back, two adults will sit comfortably and there is still enough room for a collapsible pushchair or a couple of small bags in the boot. In both models, the middle-row seats can be quickly and easily split 60/40 and folded and tumbled forward to leave a flat surface. The Grand’s rearmost seats can be folded flat, too. There are plenty of practical touches in the cabin, such as aircraft-style overhead lockers on higher-trim cars, a large shelf located above the front passengers and large cubby holes for

the other two rows. All models come with a DAB radio, a USB socket, Bluetooth connectivity, alloy wheels and six airbags, including full-length curtain ‘bags. Zetec-trimmed models are likely to sell best, adding all-round electric windows, air-con, heated mirrors and Ford’s Sync infotainment system. Top-trim Titanium cars add luxuries such as cruise control, rear parking sensors, automatic lights and wipers, a panoramic roof, climate control and leather steering wheel.

The ride is comfortable even on optional 17-inch alloys (16s come as standard), with lumps and bumps rounded off well. It’s likely the smaller, standard, 16inch wheels will improve the ride further, but it remains to be seen how the Tourneo Connect will cope with the UK’s poorer surfaces. Apart from some wind noise around the large door mirrors and windscreen on the motorway, both the Tourneo and Grand are impressively refined.

progress. In any case, it’s a quiet engine, even when revved, with little vibration felt through the steering wheel or pedals. The 1.0 petrol copes better than you might expect in a car as big as the Tourneo Connect, but it needs to be worked harder than the diesel. It remains smooth, but is noisier than the diesel. The 1.6 petrol is less impressive because it’s hampered by its automatic gearbox. The Grand Tourneo Connect also offers genuine, flexible space for seven people, and while it isn’t as good to drive as Ford’s own S-Max, it is bigger and cheaper. An equivalent five-seat diesel Citroen Berlingo Multispace or Peugeot Partner Tepee might cost slightly less and offer similar space, but they don’t drive as well, aren’t as refined and have poorer-quality cabins. They’re also less well equipped and their higher CO2 emissions, worse fuel economy and steeper depreciation mean they’ll end up costing you more to own over three years – whether you’re a company or private buyer.

Business Pages

Is your company social media friendly? Darren Wiseman, managing director of Sales Arm and Social Media Accelerator, looks at what businesses should consider when developing a social media strategy.

Speak to any boss and one of the big headaches for organisations today is how to work with employees and trust them to use social media in an appropriate way. After all, Jo from accounts might keep her Twitter account personal, but if her Linked In profile makes it clear who her employer is, it can be hard not to be concerned by tales of her Friday night exploits if they reflect negatively. It’s important to recognise that control is not the aim of the game when it comes to being a social media-friendly organisation. Everyone has the right to be on the different platforms, so – just like with customers – the key is to listen to what is being said and to be part of the conversation. The way forward is set out basic rules of behaviour within general terms and conditions and to equip employees with guidelines so there is no ambiguity about what is and isn’t acceptable. I approached one of the UK’s leading experts in social media, Darren Wiseman to get his top tips on developing and sharing a social media strategy. Darren said: “One of the first steps is to identify your approach through choice of language. For example, think about the difference between the word policy as opposed to guidelines. Policy could be perceived as a threat and guidelines opportunity. You have to decide what fits with the culture of your organisation. “Critically, it’s important to remember that social media is something that is done for, not to employees. The same is true when creating your social media policy. As such, the approach I champion is to create flexibility within boundaries. Darren offers the following pointers to illustrate what he means: Involve employees at every stage; from setting guidelines, to communicating and refreshing them.

SPONSORED BY:

DALTONSPIRE

Trust and encourage your employees to do the right thing using social media - rather than assume they will do the wrong thing.

Clearly outline expected behaviours (including defining what your organisation means by the ‘right thing’). Be explicit about the boundaries and accountability – for individuals and the company.

Detail the consequences of employee actions. Both good and bad.

Give them options when it comes to channel use.

Identify your ambassadors/super-users and work with them to self-regulate your social networks and develop guidance.

Have an open dialogue with employees, seek their views and commit to continually update your policy.

Darren adds: “That last point is particularly important. Social media moves at a particularly fast pace so regularly review your policy with employees to ensure relevancy, accuracy and to reflect current trends. “To my mind, you cannot overcommunicate social media guidance internally. You should be evolving documents that equip employees for success. Ensure your workforce know from day one what they can expect when it comes to social media use by including it in your induction process so it’s clear from day one. “Ultimately success will come to those who understand that this is not a one-way conversation. All companies and their employees have their own views and expectations when it comes to using social media. By having an open and transparent conversation upfront and continuously, it is possible to avoid misunderstandings, which avoids stressful, time consuming and potentially costly issues in the long run.” Darren provides sound advice and his words are well worth considering for organisations trying to become social and engage with customers and stakeholders in a more direct fashion. Social media is here to stay and the organisations that will thrive going forward are those embracing the channels available to them. Do it right from the start and the benefits will be there for the taking.

5 Reasons Why Sales & Business People Struggle with Negotiation Salespeople or business owners often fail to get the price for their products or services that they wanted – and often get even less than they deserve for their offering.

This has become even more true in the current market conditions – where savvy buyers and decision makers are looking to get the best value when they’re purchasing. But why is it that the buyer or decision maker often has the upper hand when it comes to negotiation? Reason 1 – They’re better prepared to negotiate Most salespeople get negotiated with before they’re ready. So if you think that a meeting or phone call could result in a negotiation, make sure you prepare for it beforehand! If a negotiation starts before you’re ready, don’t be afraid to postpone it and re-schedule it for another time when you’ve had chance to prepare. Reason 2 – You’re too desperate Prospects and clients can smell desperation and it certainly isn’t attractive! Once a client knows the salesperson is more desperate to do the deal than they are, that’s just given them the green light to get the best deal they can – at the expense of the salesperson. Reason 3 – You fail to spot their tricks Any buyer or decision maker worth their salt will attempt to play tricks during a negotiation. If you can learn how the buyers and decision makers are tricking you into losing profit, then learn how to deal with them, then you’re fine.

Please remember to mention

Fail to identify them however, and you could continue to struggle.

Reason 4 – You don’t know enough about the other party Another reason salespeople often come off worst in a negotiation is that they fail to find out enough about the other party before the negotiation starts. Often there are pressing issues, or demands on the buyer or decision maker’s time – which would force them to do a quick deal – but the salesperson fails to find that out! Therefore, they end up the keener party to do the deal – and often miss out on vital profit that could have been gained had they bothered to find out more in the first place! Reason 5 – They have more skills than you Think for a moment: when was the last time you went (or sent a member of your team) on a professional negotiation skills course, lasting from between one and three days in total? Possibly never! Think about the other side: If they’re a professional buyer, you can guarantee that they will have been on such a course. If they’re a decision maker in a business, they’re also likely to have been on a similar course. At the very least, they’re far more experienced at negotiation than you! Follow the tips above and watch your sales soar! FIONA’S FOOD FOR THOUGHT By Fiona Dwyer, broadcast journalist, PR & media consultant, slave to 2 children and a husband.

Christmas Budgets We are inundated with Christmas adverts at this time of year and, if your children are like mine, they have already prepared their lists for Santa. But have you decided how much you’re going to spend this year – and are you planning to stick to your budget? There’s absolutely no point going over the top when you’re buying presents. As parents you may feel you have to buy up half the toy shop or get the latest gizmo just to ensure your child’s happiness. But is that just like trying to keep up with the Jones’? Do we spoil our children at Christmas? Probably a bit – but isn’t it a magical time? If you’re looking for some ways to have a more frugal Christmas, there are loads of websites about how to keep within your Christmas budget. The trick seems to be in being creative, only spending what you’ve already got – and, above all, making sure you’re not still paying for Christmas next July! And remember, it’s not just about presents. It’s just as important to spend some real, quality time with the family over Christmas. It’s these memories that last forever! Winter Comfort Is it just me or do darker mornings make you want to stay under the duvet just that little bit longer too? It’s just that bit harder to drag yourself out of bed and into the shower! And when it’s cold outside, there’s nothing better than getting back to the warmth of your home and eating “comfort” food like winter vegetable soup with fresh crusty bread, sausages and mash, chicken stew. You might have already guessed, but I’m a real home bird. The Spring and Summer always give me an extra bounce to my step, but over the winter months, I like to wrap up warm and hibernate! To Look Forward To....! Have you heard that The Clangers are coming back on TV? I used to watch this when I was little – and it really brings back memories! Anyway, it’s going to be recreated for the BBC’s CBeebies channel at a cost of £5 million. The only downside is that we’ve got to wait until 2015 until it’s released!

More Music, More East Yorkshire, More YOU!

Another month has come around already – the summer has been so busy here at KCFM. We’ve been out and about at events taking place right across East Yorkshire, and making some of our own fun as well – as you’ll see!

One of the big events of the summer was Tribfest at Sledmere House near Driffield. It’s a music festival with a real family feel, and some world class cover bands too. The sun shone, the music played and the blue wigs swayed in time to the beat. We can’t wait until next year already.

The Daytime presenters here at KCFM managed to take advantage of one of the last hot, sunny days of the year by lugging a heavy sofa around East Yorkshire, and making ourselves at home at some of our favourite landmarks. Sam Heywood was ‘White Van Woman’ for the day, while Matt Hutchinson, Rob Langley and Darren Lethem did the sofa removal work - and we really did have a laugh.

There were many bemused faces when we turned up outside Beverley Minster or on Hornsea seafront and sat down on our own sofa! We made sure we photographed the whole day of course and you can see all the pictures by going to the front page of kcfm.co.uk Here are some of the highlights – for example when Sam asked a passer-by on Hessle Foreshore if we could borrow their dog! She was called Kelsey and was very happy to join our party. There were a few surprised ducks and grumpy geese when we landed with our furniture at Hornsea Mere. There’s always time for fish and chips of course – although none of them realised the guilty moment had been caught on camera! And at the end of a long day, the sofa became very useful for tired feet. I think they’re still there now! Go to kcfm.co.uk to see the rest, and listen out to 99.8 KCFM throughout the weekday to catch up with guys. The KCFM Breakfast Show with Matt Hutchinson 5am - 10am, Sam Heywood 10am - 2pm, Rob Langley 2pm 7pm, Darren Lethem 7pm - 10pm.
