Hello Hull,

Welcome to the seventh edition of HULLMAG. We have another feature packed magazine for your this month. With Christmas within touching distance I think we are all looking forward to some time off work and an opportunity to either relax with friends and family or to push the boat out and endulge ourselves in the festivities. For those who choose the latter we have a New Year, New You feature that will help you get back on track in 2014 and realise some of those resolutions that we all make. My resolve will be to lose weight and eat better, however I don’t normally get past February without giving in to the chocolate, chips, crisps and cider!!!! Hmmm... I am just a weak minded man! Also in this edition we have a green feature that will hopefully whet your appetite to start living in a more responsible way and factoring in how our lifestyles and actions have implications on the planet and the futures of our children. There is plent to do in Hull over the festive period and as we are now going to be the City of Culture in 2017 things will snowball and we will all be spoilt for choice. Often in the new year people start thinking about moving house or improving what they have and we touch on some of the options available in our feature on page 11. I would like to end by wishing you all a very happy Christmas and prosperous New Year from myself and the team.

Festive play celebrates Hull’s cultural magic! ‘Hull’s Angel’ Presented by Ensemble 52 Written by Janet Plater. Directed by Madeleine O’Reilly and Andrew Pearson 10th – 14th December, The Other Space, Hull As celebrations take place across the newly crowned City of Culture 2017, Hull-born playwright Janet Plater returns to her hometown with a brand new play for the festive season. Set in the current day against the backdrop of the city, Hull’s Angel is a Christmas play with songs celebrating the down to earth personality of the community of Hull. Brought to life by Ensemble 52 – a company that played an active role in the city of culture campaign – this new take on the Christmas story reinforces the clearly popular notion that there’s something rather magical about Hull. While scientists are predicting an unusual star is going to shine over the city, Mary, a young woman living in Newcastle, receives an intriguing message from a stranger. She is told that she has been chosen to give birth to the new saviour of the world! She tells him to nick off. Still, it’s quite a shock when Mary finds she is expecting a baby. Meanwhile, there’s talk of a special event due to take place in Hull, the hometown of Mary’s boyfriend Joe. So, they pack their bags and set off down the M62. But guess what, there’s no room at the inn! After searching the city high and low, Mary and Joe manage to find refuge in the shed behind the Starr Inn. But it’s pretty packed. And what with the shepherds and Prince Harry turning up… This brand new play sparkles with Plater’s passion for Hull and her obvious love of its people. After enjoying a happy childhood living in Hull’s Westbourne Avenue area, Plater spent nine years in London before moving to her current home, Newcastle upon Tyne, where she runs the North East’s leading professional actor’s agency. Her plays have been performed for BBC Radio 4, at the Theatre Royal in Newcastle and at several Hull venues including Hull Truck, Fruit and with Ensemble 52 as part of Hull’s Freedom Festival. Andrew Pearson, Co-Director, said: “This is a great way to start the build-up to Christmas festivities. Janet has crafted a new version of the nativity with a very local flavour. It’s one that the people of Hull will thoroughly enjoy.” Hull’s Angel features a cast of six including Hull actor Bruce Khan and stalwart actor and Coronation Street writer, Phil Woods. Woods has performed for the Royal Court Theatre and is no stranger to the West End or indeed Hull, being a part of the original Spring Street Theatre Company. His last television acting role was in Softly Softly by the late Alan Plater.

Pets and the Environment

Europeans and Americans spend £10.3 billion on pet food every year, £2.4 billion more than the additional amount needed to cover basic nutrition and health for every person on the planet’
- UN Human Development Report, 1998. This does not mean that the world would be a better place if our companion animals were suddenly starved or abandoned – but it provides a strong argument for neutering our pets and for supporting animal rescue centres such as The RSPCA, or animal rescue centres rather than breeders. Kittens are cute, but think ‘ecological pawprint’! – we need to care more for each pet, rather than to have more pets to care for. The environmental issues around cats and dogs relate to feeding, cleaning up after them, dealing with petsparasites, and cats and wildlife. Cats and dogs are among the commonest pets in the UK and have a significant impact on the environment. But many other creatures: guinea pigs, hamsters, rabbits, other small furry creatures, fish and birds; are kept as pets. The basic issues are the same: consider the implications of what they eat, their waste products, the spaces you need to provide for them and their interactions with land and wildlife.

New parking machines installed

A programme to replace almost half of Hull City Council’s parking machines across the city will be completed this week. The 43 new machines are being installed to a number of car parks and on street parking, they will provide us live information to indicate how many tickets are still available, identify any faults and the amount of cash they hold as well as detecting fraudulent coins.. They are also more secure with a stronger cash box that will set off an alarm if tampered with. Motorists can also take advantage of paying for parking by debit/credit card, a facility running alongside the cash meters. This involves signing up to an account with MiPermit. com, sending a short text with the location of parking. This information is held on a computer and passed to all the hand held computers in use by our Parking Enforcement Team. The parking charge is later taken from the debit/credit card provided. Councillor Martin Mancey, Portfolio Holder for Energy City with the responsibility for Highways and Transport, said: “The installation of the parking machines are part of our ongoing improvement programme, making it easier to park on the city’s streets. The new machines will reduce the chances of the machines being broken into. The remainder of machines will be replaced once available funding becomes available.“ Visitors and residents can park in Hull City Council’s three multi-story car parks on Saturday’s and Sunday’s between 7 – 29 December for free to encourage Christmas shopping into the city centre. Osborne Street, Pryme Street and George Street offer spaces for over 1,400 vehicles to park with the run-up to Christmas.

Christmas Countdown

Budgeting for Christmas….. and afterwards! It’s almost that time again, and according to a recent article I read, the average UK consumer will spend approximately £480 on Christmas. This is despite the pressure that many families have been feeling in recent years thanks to the rising costs of living. You could reduce the financial stress of “Christmas” by having (and sticking to) a budget, and ideally by putting money aside in advance. It may be a little late for the latter, but by creating a budget now it will make you think about what you are planning to spend this year, but also how to financially plan in advance for next year.

The next step would be to plan ahead. For example if the budget highlights that “Christmas” costs £1000 then you know that to avoid having a £1000 credit bill to pay off after Christmas, you need to try and save around £80pm in a separate bank account between now and next year. What this will do is take the pressure off having to clear credit cards and interest charges. Hopefully by creating a budget now, you will be able to relax and enjoy Christmas even more in future! Have a great Christmas! Shane Beardsley Independent Financial Adviser, Kirk Ella Investments Ltd

Sam’s Shenanigans The first step is to create a ‘budget’; You can do this on a simple spread sheet, or on one of the many software packages. To begin with, create a new file or document called “Christmas”; this can actually work for other events such as “Holidays”. You should consider using individual sub-categories such as food & drink, gifts, decorations, travel expenses, and so on. The first year will always be the hardest because you have no information to fall back on, but try and consider everything you think you will spend. As with any budget, it is only as good as the information that is recorded, so you must track everything. Once Christmas is over, you must refer back to this document and assess the total cost. You may have exceeded your first years budget, or may have over estimated, but either way you need to make some adjustments to the budget for next year. If you overspent, look at the different areas and decide if your budget had been realistic, and try to look at ways to save money. If on the other hand you came out under budget, well done! Don’t forget to also try and take account of inflation for future budgets. It is highly likely that it will cost more next year!

She’s Got Claws: Can We Hope For Christmas. She’s Got Claws is one Micci Lou, formerly of Adrenalin Junkies. There is a major clue in that name, as she is heavily influenced by the likes of Gary Numan, Kraftwerk, OMD and their ilk. Indeed, Andy McCluskey has waxed lyrical about her. Fittingly, Can We Hope For Christmas is a glorious slice of 80s electronica that fizzes along like a melodic sleigh ride. Sweet without exuding the schmaltzy side of the festive season. It’s just the thing to countermand the forthcoming onslaught of Slade, Wizzard and the like. One of the best Christmas songs you are likely to hear this year. John D Hodgkinson

Method:

Mix all ingredients together and leave for 24 hours. SERVES: 8 Pre-heat oven to gas mark 7/ 200 degrees centigrade. Put flour in a bowl. MOVE or

IMPROVE There’s no place like home – but that doesn’t mean it can’t be improved upon. Whether you’re considering a move in the next few years or not, there are lots of ways to update your property, whatever your budget. But what can you do that won’t just improve your living standards, but could also help maintain or raise its value should you decide to sell in the future?

cost depending on the material used as a covering. They estimate that, per square foot, gravel costs £3.26, blacktop/ asphalt costs £3.26, concrete costs £6.52, and brick/paving costs £19.56. And be selective if you’re tempted to banish all weeds – wild flowers can look attractive, particularly in urban areas.

The values stated in this feature are based on a range of sources and are estimates only. The increased value these renovations could make to your home will depend on the age and type of property as well as location and as such these estimates should be used as a guide only. All sources and information correct at time of publication, December 2013. Each of the following ideas are based on a spend of between £1,000 - £2,999 each. Kitchen Freshen up. You can replace or repaint cupboard doors, which are the first things to get sticky and tiredlooking. Switching to soft-close doors offers a neat finish, or you can replace door handles with light-reflecting glass or something quirkier to add character. Swap your tile splash back for back-painted glass or mirror, and invest in a stylish tap – smart, shiny accessories can help add a modern feel. If your kitchen table is marked, sand it down and give it a new lease of life with a coat of varnish or paint.

11 Go potty. Herbs, spring bulbs, and sprightly geraniums will add brightness and interest to the smallest of spaces. Repoint and paint any crumbling walls to spruce up your outdoor space. Miles Shipside of Rightmove suggests that smartening up hedges and lawns could help to attract prospective buyers if you do decide to sell. In London, outdoor space adds considerable value to a property, so it pays to make the most of it. Lawrence Hall from Zoopla advises, ‘a clean, uncluttered, well-maintained garden and outside area can add to the value and saleability of the home. It’s well worth making the effort’. If you don’t have the budget for a full loft conversion, you can still affordably enhance it as a storage space to help you de-clutter the rest of your home. PrimeLocation. com estimates that a storage loft conversion would cost between £700 and £1,000, including flooring, lighting and a ladder. If you’d rather full stairs to a ladder, costs range from £500-£800 for a straight flight.

Kerb appeal improves the overall look of your property and will help to attract buyers when the time comes – so repaint your front door and make sure your windows and frames are in good nick and spotlessly clean. Smart door furniture will make a home look well-kept, as will vibrant window boxes or a well-tended entrance way. According to TradeAdvisor.com, installing a driveway varies in

Decorating With Grey Expert tips and stylish colour pairings make it easy to integrate this neutral shade into your decor. Gray Paint In decorating circles, gray is the new white, and has been for a while. It’s a more elegant neutral that gives depth to subtle colors and makes bold tones pop (rather than shout). But getting gray right is tricky: The “temperature” of a particular shade, cool or warm can evoke very different feelings and have an enormous impact on the mood of a room. Dual Tones Two grays of varying hues on the walls give a room added depth. Serene and Soothing Though at face value a palette of grays might seem bleak, it’s actually sophisticated, with a hint of luxury. A Shade Beyond White Where once white was the go-to, gray has the same gowith-everything nature but it’s far more interesting. Cool Grays Ethereal and breezy, these grays have undertones of blue. “Think of the darkening sky before a storm,” says New York City interior designer Jennifer Moore. In a sunny room (where some grays could look dull), cool grays hold their color. Zen and peaceful, these are also perfect for a crisp, clean feeling in a bathroom. Expert Tip: Use flat paint, not semigloss or high-gloss, on walls. “Otherwise, any beautiful gray you choose will look like industrial metal

Repoint crumbling bricks Wind, rain and frost all damage the mortar between bricks. This makes the wall less weatherproof – so repointing (which simply means replacing) the mortar is important to stop the wall wearing away. You will need: • Large screwdriver • Old newspape • Old paintbrush • Cement mortar mix • Old bucket • Big piece of hardboard or similar to mix mortar on • Brick pointing trowel • Old newspaper As cement mortar comes in different colours, it is best to mix a little up and let it dry on a piece of scrap paper before you start work on the wall. If the colour isn’t in keeping with the rest of your house, buy some mortar colorant and experiment until you have a good match – invest the necessary time doing this to avoid having an area of mortar that will make your repairs obvious to all.

Dig out the old mortar to a depth of 1cm with a large screwdriver – or a club hammer with a cold chisel if it’s very tough. Do an area of around 1 square metre at a time – this will make it easier to manage. Once you’ve brushed away dust and debris, you are ready to start. Make up your mortar mix as per the instructions on the pack. Soak the area that needs repairing by sloshing a wet paintbrush across it, then put some old newspaper or plastic on the ground below the wall to catch spills. Use a pointing trowel to force the mortar into the gaps – do the verticals first, then the horizontals, which makes it easier to keep track of where you’re up to. Finish the mortar joint the same way as the rest of the bricks (some slope, some are indented etc). Just before it dries (refer to the tin for drying times), brush off excess with a stiff brush. If you have a pre-1930s house with a sandy kind of mortar, it’s probably lime mortar. In this case, using a cement mortar on top can do more harm than good. Consult an expert before carrying out any repair work.

Hull tops leaderboard for helping households save money on energy Hull City Council has come out at the top of an index of 380 Local Authorities for helping households save money on the cost of their energy bills. Homely commissioned the research which looked at six years of government data to create a ‘cosy index’ for 380 councils and a leaderboard of the ‘cosiest’ places to live. Hull is at the top of the leaderboard, which can be found at: http://wearehomely.com/cosy-index/ Councillor Martin Mancey, Hull City Council Portfolio Holder for Energy City said: “We have been working hard, as part of our City Plan, to reduce fuel poverty in the city and to be the leading UK energy city. “This accolade recognises the work of the Council, together with partners Hull Warm Zone, which has been promoting and delivering energy efficiency improvements to residents’ homes across the city for over 10 years. Over the last year alone over 2,500 energy efficiency measures, which included lofts, cavities and new boilers, have been installed to both Council and private sector homes. We have also made improvements to hundreds of older, inefficient properties through whole-street external wall insulation programmes. “I am delighted that this report highlights we are the leading Local Authority area for energy efficiency and we will continue to work to develop energy efficient schemes across our services and the city, as well as help residents access support and advise relating to energy and money.”

New Year, New You It is forecast that 48 per cent of men and 43 per cent of women could be obese by 2030, which could add a further £1.9 billion in costs to the NHS. In October 2011, the government launched its obesity strategy and called for more people to be honest about what they eat and drink, since on average, adults exceed their calorie intake by about 10 per cent. Current government guidelines advise on ways to maintain a healthy weight. The guideline recommends basing meals on starchy foods, eating plenty of fibrerich foods and making sure at least five portions of fruit and vegetables are eaten per day. The guideline also says that people who have concerns about their diet should discuss these with a healthcare professional, and encourages taking up a weight loss programme based on a balanced healthy diet, coupled with regular physical activity. New Year, New You

A Christmas check that could save your life!

With Christmas almost here we know we are going to eat more than is possibly good for us and it is on occasions like this that on going to the loo, and if we look at our poo, we may see signs of blood in it. Ah, we think, it’s because I’ve eaten too much at Christmas! Well it could be that, but it could also be a sign of bowel cancer. Bowel cancer is a general term for cancer that begins in the large bowel. Depending on where the cancer starts, bowel cancer is sometimes called colon cancer or rectal cancer. An unexplained change in your bowel habits, such as diarrhoea , or constipation, or weight loss, resulting in the appearance of blood in your poo, are all potential signs of bowel cancer, and for your peace of mind you should make an appointment to see your doctor as soon as possible. For some reason men are slow in going to a doctor when they have a medical problem, possibly because they feel less macho, and they think the problem will go away: well it won’t! Without doubt you owe it to your family, if not yourself, to go and see your doctor. Naturally a diagnosis of cancer, or even a suspicion of cancer can make you extremely fearful, particularly if you have had friends or family who have died of cancer. So it’s no wonder research shows that cancer is the most feared disease in the world along with being the most feared word too: how could it not be! But, there is good news: nine out of ten people with bowel cancer recover completely, providing the disease is caught in time: i.e. go and see your doctor as soon as the problem arises. He will take a small stool sample and test it for the presence of blood. Bowel cancer can be treated using a combination of surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy and, in some cases, biological therapy. As with most types of cancer, the chance of a complete cure depends on how far the cancer has advanced by the time it is diagnosed. If bowel cancer is diagnosed in its earliest stages, the chance of surviving a further five years is 90%, and a complete cure is usually possible. However, bowel cancer diagnosed in its most advanced stage only has a five-year survival rate of 6% and a complete cure is unlikely.

Hull City Council provides a bin for the doorstep collection of recyclables? Use it! Do you routinely go past a recycling point? Get organised! If you’re covering just those basics – cans, bottles, newspaper and magazines – you’re already part of a vital green network.

Don’t pour toxic chemicals down the drain! – sewage works are fragile, and so are rivers. Seal it, bag it, bin it! Don’t throw used engine oil away! – it’s a real hazard to wildlife and waterways, and can provide useful energy instead. Visit the Oil Care Campaign website for information on local recycling sites.

First steps to an eco-home and green living Don’t take the car to the corner shop. These shortest car journeys cause the most pollution, mile for mile: cold engines are inefficient, and you’ll spend half your time idling in the drive on your way out. Get a rucksack! They’re fashionable, they let you carry a few bits of shopping without backstrain or cluttered hands, and you won’t even need a carrier bag when you’ve sauntered, car-free, to the shop down the street.

Low energy light bulbs? – treat yourself to at least one. It’ll pay for itself, and it’ll make you feel virtuous too. Gardening? Use peat substitutes, never peat itself – each block of peat you use was a piece of irreplaceable wild land, and a vital natural carbon sink. New mahogany? It’s wild, and it’s desperately endangered – one to avoid, as your first vote in favour of the world’s remaining wild forests. More… Give one of the “green” washing-up liquids a try. A cleaner environment – and with today’s products, no compromise in your kitchen! Buy recycled! – it’s no good taking paper to a recycling bank if there’s no market for recycled paper products. Bigger supermarkets usually stock loo paper and kitchen towels made from recycled fibres, for a start.

Now is the time to install our If you’ve decided to use a car for your journey, why not decide how you drive as well? You can save yourself fuel, and reduce emissions, by going for a smoother driving style, one that says: “I’m relaxed, I’m in control, and I’ve got nothing to prove!” Turn off unwanted lights. It’s so simple, it saves money – and it says: “I want there to be enough for everyone, forever”

Why choose green? We are all aware of the environmental crisis, but what can we do about it? Is it our responsibility as individuals to take action, or should we expect the government or industry to take responsibility? Some environmental problems are the result of large-scale events such as the 1989 oil spill off Alaska from the Exxon Valdez. However, many environmental problems are the cumulative effect of many ordinary people going about their normal daily lives. Even commercial companies that produce toxic waste or excess packaging may do so because we buy their products or services.

Many of our daily activities produce what are known as sub-threshold effects. This means that when, for example, I throw away a single battery, the environmental damage caused by my action is negligible. Even if I use batteries regularly, the effect is probably still negligible. So do I really need to worry? Well, imagine a village with a population of one hundred. The villagers are about to eat lunch, and each villager has a plate of 100 beans. A group of one hundred bandits raid the village, and each bandit takes and eats the lunch of one villager. The next day the bandits decide to repeat the raid, but each bandit feels guilty about depriving a villager of his meal. However, they soon find a way round this attack of conscience. They raid the village as before, but this time each bandit takes only one bean from the hundred beans on the plate of each villager. The bandits leave, well fed and happy, each knowing that his impact on each villager has been negligible. The villagers, however, have still lost all of their lunch!1 The factor that the bandits ignored is that they knew the other bandits were behaving in the same way, and they therefore knew that the effect of the second raid would be the same as the first. Similarly, like me, many other people are regularly throwing away batteries, and the cumulative effect of these actions isn’t negligible. And I know that lots of other people are throwing batteries away, so I know that my action is contributing to significant environmental damage. This knowledge makes a difference. Claire Appleby,

COMPUTERS THAT DON’T COST THE EARTH Did you know it is estimated that for every ton of computer equipment recycled there is a 10 ton carbon saving, and for every ton of computer equipment refurbished and re-used there is a 40 ton carbon saving. As personal and business computers continue to face obsolescence because of frequent updates, people are tossing more and more computers to the curb. While not all computers are completely recyclable, many of the components and parts can have value and a second life away from the landfill. Recycling computers is an important green initiative, as the facts show. Running Out of Room Since computers and monitors are often bulky, they take up a great deal of room in landfills if they are thrown away intact, as most are. Since consumers own millions of home computers that become “obsolete” every three years, they will continue to overburden our landfills unless computer recycling becomes the norm. Dangerous Chemicals Personal computers contain toxic chemicals including lead and cadmium. When the plastic cases are burned, as they often are in large scale scavanger operations abroad, they release even more toxic fumes into the atmosphere. Laptop LCD screens contain mercury. Burying these computers in landfills leaches toxins into the groundwater, posing a hazard for humans and other life forms. Recycling computers keeps these harmful chemicals out of the ecosystem. Better Economic Sense Except in the most technologically advanced instances, new computers are not often that much more advanced compared to some old computers. Nevertheless, manufacturers constantly pressure consumers to “buy new.” A computer owner can upgrade his computer significantly for far less than buying a new computer and to one that may be only slightly better. Consumers can save lots of money by “recycling”

their computers to themselves rather than buying a new machine too soon. Recycling Parts Most computers contain components that have value intact, such as hard drives, PCI cards, and DVD drives. These parts are often in demand by computer enthusiasts on swap-and-auction sites like eBay. Components like laptops, LCD screens, working motherboards, and AC adapters can often command very good prices in these markets. “Parting out” an old computer is a better option that throwing it out. Recycling Materials Even when the computer components are not functioning, they still have recovery value. Processors, memory and PCI cards contain gold, for example. Computers also contain copper in the form of wiring. The plastic used in computer cases can be recycled and used to produce new plastic products. Computer recycling centers recover these materials and benefit the environment. Not Obsolete At All Many personal computer owners think their three-to-five-year-old computer has no value and no fate better than being set out on the curb for refuse. The fact is that many trashed computers are readily recyclable. While Internet browsing and media may be slow on these older machines, these are still “good” computers. People who can’t afford to purchase a computer can use these machines. You should donate your old computer, if possible, not thrown it away. Community Repurposing Efforts Donating computers for use by others is a good idea. Unfortunately, many communities in the U.K. don’t have ongoing programs for matching unwanted computers with new owners. Many organisations are hesitant about accepting donations of used machines due to worries about software licensing, and a lack of staff support for rehabilitating and maintaining older computers. Local Computer Refurbishment companies remove these barriers.

Seven networking tips for introverts I’ve never been the sort of person who is good at making small talk, especially in a room packed full of strangers.

But a key part of my job is getting out into the world and meeting people, conducting interviews and building up contacts - so it’s a good job I’m a fast learner. Here’s a few key tips I’ve picked up along the way. Show up early Arriving in a crowded room full of people already talking at a flat-out rate can make networking extraintimidating. Getting there early gives you the chance to check out the lay of the land and find somebody who isn’t already engaged in conversation. Do your homework It’s often easiest to strike up a conversation with somebody if you already know something about them. You should probably stop short of excessive stalking of peoples’ LinkedIn pages, but try and get hold of a delegate list before the event, pay attention to what people are already talking about and check name badges to find a conversation opener. Make the most of acquaintances If you run into somebody you already know it can be easy to end up latched onto them for the whole of an event – which ultimately defeats the purpose of networking! Instead, ask them to introduce you to somebody else they know but you don’t.

Rather than “are you having a good time?” or “what job do you do?”, consider “What did you think of speaker X?” or “what brings you to this event?”. Have a purpose, but don’t go for the hard-sell It helps to know what you want out of a networking session but coming across as all salesy will immediately damage perceptions of you. Remember that networking is all about making connections and building trust. Follow up Even the most charismatic talkers can be forgettable after leaving an event. Drop the people you met an email or connect with them on LinkedIn to show you’re keen to build a rapport. Be yourself

Unless you’re a successful actor, false personas never come across well. As one entrepreneur recently told me: “The key to networking is just not being a dork. If you’re not a dork then people will always be happy to talk to you.” If you want to give networking in Hull a try, Business Community Co-Operative meet every thursday. They are a friendly and very welcoming group eager to do business and forge new relationships. See their advert on page 29 for contact details.

FIONA’S FOOD FOR THOUGHT By Fiona Dwyer, broadcast journalist, PR & media consultant, slave to 2 children and a husband. BE COURTEOUS TO FELLOW SHOPPERS Whether you’re Christmas shopping or shopping in the sales please don’t forget to be courteous to your fellow shoppers. It doesn’t take any time at all to hold a shop door open for someone, to thank someone who does it for you, to stand to one side to allow a pram or a wheel chair to pass through the crowds. Everyone’s always in such a rush. So many people keep their heads down and barge around like there’s no-one else on the planet. But it makes all the difference when you give someone a smile or show some other kindness. It’s the season of goodwill - so why not show some? You’ll brighten someone’s day and it’ll make you feel better too! THE WORK IS ONLY JUST BEGINNING It’s fantastic that Hull has been crowned City of Culture 2017. We know there are loads of things already happening here, like the Freedom Festival, Humber Mouth Literature Festival, Humber Sesh and Jazz Festival. We’ve got The Deep, Ferens Art Gallery and some great musuems. And the Humber Bridge is a brilliant landmark as people approach the city. These, though, are just the beginning. The real work now needs to be done to ensure that this great opportunity becomes a legacy for Hull. It will boost the local economy, create jobs and hopefully help reduce some of the troubles that people face. I’m sure Hull will pull together to impress the thousands upon thousands of visitors we’re hoping to attract. Hull is a special place - it’s just that most people don’t know it yet! This is just the start - and we’ve got to make sure they want to come back! CHRISTMAS QUOTES I wanted to share a couple of quotes with you for the festive season. The first one is a wonderful sentiment, simply expressed. The second just made me chuckle! Christmas is forever, not for just one day, for loving, sharing, giving, are not to put away like bells and lights and tinsel, in some box upon a shelf. The good you do for others is the good you do yourself. Norman W. Brooks, Let Every Day Be Christmas

And one that most dads will never have to worry about! One can never have enough socks,” said Dumbledore. “Another Christmas has come and gone and I didn’t get a single pair. People will insist on giving me books.” J. K. Rowling

And finally, I just wanted to wish you all a very happy and peaceful Christmas and a healthy and prosperous New Year! To Contact

More Music, More East Yorkshire, More YOU! The countdown to Christmas has officially begun! It's been a busy November as we've been out and about across East Yorkshire turning on Christmas Lights, and officially beginning the countdown to Santa arriving. We've been to Hull City Centre, Cottingham, Newland Avenue, Hessle, Beverley, Hedon, Freedom Centre East Hull, Goole, Bilton and more! If you go to our website at kcfm.co.uk you can see all the photos from each event. See if you can spot yourself! We were also out this November at various bonfire and firework displays. Matt Hutchinson from the KCFM Breakfast Show was at West Park in Goole for their annual bonfire display, along with another ten thousand people! What an amazing night! More photos from the night on the Events page of kcfm.co.uk

Darren Lethem was also at Brantingham Park for their annual fireworks bash. Another fantastic evening with lots of ooooooh’s and aaaaaah’s (even the occasional weeeeee!). Get all the photos on the Events page of kcfm.co.uk

A busy month ahead – let’s hope we get time to squeeze some Christmas shopping in too! Follow us on:
