Christmas Dangers!

Each month, vet Dr. David Robinson from the Kingston Veterinary Group will be giving advice about looking after your pets. In this month’s Pets Page he talks about how to keep your pet safe over the Christmas period.

Sugary treats, fine food and sparkling decorations are all part of the magic of Christmas but these festive delights can prove hazardous to your pet’s health. By following some simple steps you can ensure that your pet stays safe and you won’t have to interrupt your festive fun with an emergency visit to the vets. Chocolate, Treats and Alcohol Make sure that these are kept well out of reach of your pet. Chocolate is extremely toxic for dogs as it contains theobromine, which in large doses will affect the central nervous system and the heart. Christmas cake, Christmas pudding and mince pies are also dangerous as they contain raisins, currants and sultanas. The effect can be further compounded if they have been soaked in rum or other alcohol. Alcohol poisoning can result in a dangerous drop of blood sugar, blood pressure and body temperature, potentially leading to seizure and respiratory failure. Just a small amount of alcohol can poison your pet so make sure that alcoholic drinks are kept well out of reach. Turkey and Trimmings Turkey bones should never be given to dogs or cats because they can scrape, tear

or perforate their gastrointestinal tract. Bones can also get stuck and cause an obstruction in the digestive system. Left untreated, this can lead to death. Likewise, stuffing should never be fed to your pet as it contains onions and garlic, which can destroy red blood cells, causing life-threatening anaemia. Other Hazards Remember to keep the kitchen waste bin securely closed. As well as leftover food, the bin may also contain items such as tin foil, meat strings, toothpicks and plastic wrapping which can all cause severe problems if swallowed. Christmas presents, lights, trees, decorations and plants can also be dangerous to pets. Amaryllis, holly, mistletoe, lillies and poinsettias are all toxic to dogs and cats so be careful where you place them. Similarly, hang tinsel, baubles and lights out of your pet’s reach. Do not put lights on the tree’s lower branches as they could burn your pet if he becomes tangled up in them, or he may get an electric shock if he bites through the wire. And finally, if your pet does manage to get his paws on something he shouldn’t have, call your vet immediately to find out what you should do. If you have any queries about vaccination you can ask us for advice. Contact us on 01482 223688 or visit our website www.kingstonvet.co.uk

Searchers on 29th Avenue This Christmas will the 29th consecutive year that the Searchers have played their festive Show at Hull’s City Hall. It’s the highlight in the bands calendar, says Searchers’ founder member John McNally “We look forward to playing Hull so much. We travel around the world playing our hits for the fans – this year we played Australia again, but Hull is still the concert we look forward to most” Founder member, John McNally played the Cavern alongside the Beatles, and it was John Lennon who said that ‘Sweets For My Sweet’ was his favourite single of 1963. The Searchers also had a season in Hamburg at the Star Club in the Reeperbahn – much like the Beatles. The two Johns were good friends. Frank Allen was also playing in Hamburg with Cliff Bennett and the Rebel Rousers and he became one of the Searchers soon afterwards – and he’s still playing with the band today. 50 years on, and the band still love love playing the hits. Ten top twenty singles – including three number ones – ‘Sweets For My Sweet’, ‘Don’t Throw Your Love Away’ and Needles and Pins’ And three more singles at number 2, 3 and 4 – Sugar and Spice’ , When You Walk In The Room’ and ‘Goodbye My Love’ Two of the original Searchers are now no longer with us – we lost lead singer Tony Jackson in 2003 and the original

drummer was Chris Curtis who passed away in 2005 The Searchers Christmas Show this year is a Liverpool special with the Merseybeats as special guests – the band includes two of the founder members - original lead singer Tony Crane and Billy Kinsley. Hull’s musical favourites, The Aces will also be playing the show. It’s guaranteed to be a hand clapping singalong Christmas party to ensure you’re soon in a festive mood. Hull tells the world that there’s ‘More to the Story’ with BBC partnership and new brand Hull has reached another major milestone on its journey towards UK City of Culture 2017 with the announcement of an exciting partnership with the BBC and the launch of a new brand that will tell the world, in a way that only Hull can, that there is more to the city and more to culture. Speaking to an audience of over 500 people at Hull Truck Theatre, Hull 2017 Chief Executive, Martin Green, and BBC Director General, Lord Hall, announced the beginning of a collaboration that will ensure Hull 2017 has global reach whilst providing a lasting legacy for the people of Hull. Martin Green, Chief Executive of Hull 2017 (pictured right), said: “Our partnership with the BBC is absolutely critical to the success of Hull 2017. Within the UK, it means that people across the entire country will be engaged with their national cultural festival, encouraging them to look again at Hull and at what they think of as culture.

“I want the BBC in Hull to be a powerhouse of creativity. I want us to work with Hull City of Culture 2017 to try new things, to push boundaries and take risks. We want to experiment, innovate and help talent in Hull find their voice. “I recently set out our case for an open, enabling BBC that supports creativity in all kinds of ways. I want the BBC to be at the heart of Hull’s big year because I recognise that by working closely together as equal partners we can achieve so much more.” The BBC’s activities for Hull 2017 will include: • A world-class celebration of poetry, performance and the spoken word – shaped and made in Hull and inspired by the city’s rich poetry heritage, which includes the likes of Andrew Marvel and Philip Larkin • BBC Learning will be working with schools and organisations across the city to deliver targeted projects to inspire and create educational opportunities for the city’s young people • BBC Writers Room will be looking for writers – new and established – to develop stories inspired by Hull • Some of the BBC’s biggest events will come to the city during 2017 and the BBC will create new ones.

“Internationally, the BBC is one of the most powerful tools we have to create a global interaction with our stories. Hull 2017 will be a 365-day festival of the most compelling and ambitious cultural experiences that the UK has to offer and, with the BBC on board, we will be able to share those experiences with the whole world.”

Hull’s ambition to secure a lasting legacy for its year as UK City of Culture was highlighted by other speakers at today’s event including Hull City Council Leader, Stephen Brady, who is driving the regeneration of the city through the delivery of a £100m cultural capital programme.

Lord Hall said: “I’m proud to announce our partnership today. The BBC is going to be unashamedly ‘Hull-centric’ in 2017. We are really looking forward to working with Hull 2017 to create something very special for the city and for audiences around the world.

Councillor Brady said: “We are determined to ensure that Hull is well placed to capitalise on this once-in-a-generation opportunity to harness culture to improve our economy and people’s lives. The partnership between Hull 2017 and the BBC will make an important contribution to that and I am very

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! ADVERTISEMENT

It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Branch Manager William Moulds feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can

replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we

will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Hull, Beverley & Driffield areas and William is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal

satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give William a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Local News excited about the possibilities it will open up for young people in our city.” Today’s event also saw the launch of the new Hull, UK City of Culture 2017 brand, which uses the city’s down-to-earth, provocative, yet welcoming, quintessentially Northern character to communicate its central message of “there’s more to the story”. Created by Yorkshire creative agency, Jaywing, and informed by over 400 conversations with local people, the brand is rooted in the culture and personality of the city. Martin Green added: “Our brand for 2017 is the way we will export the voice and personality of Hull across the UK and beyond. It’s also an important tool we use to raise our funding and engage communities across the city. “People from Hull, and those who know this city, understand that it cannot be defined by a single story or idea. There is always more to the story. “As we get ready to welcome the world in 2017, our brand will invite people to look again at the city as we reveal its cultural DNA through our marketing. “Our aim is to show people that Hull is a place that inspires and celebrates culture in all of its diverse forms, a place that invites debate about the meaning and nature of culture – a great Northern city that has much to say and is not afraid to say it out loud.” Closing the event, the Hull 2017 Chief Executive set out how

the build up to 2017 will accelerate next year, confirming that a new digital platform for the city and the start of volunteer recruitment will begin early in the New Year. Further announcements will follow over the coming months on funding partnerships and a new Business Club will be launched to allow smaller businesses to get involved. The company will continue to work with local artists, festivals and cultural venues to build capacity and bring their work to a wider audience. The intensive work to develop and confirm the artistic programme for 2017 will continue and September 2016 will see the launch of the first ‘Made in Hull’ season and highlights for the full year. He also confirmed that the Hull 2017 Programme Fund will be introduced with the aim of inspiring individuals and groups to produce new work and events for 2017. Details of the fund will be available in the New Year, with applications opening in the spring for decisions by July 2016. Large and small projects will be considered, with most grants to be made between £300 and £10,000, though there may be exceptions for more ambitious projects.

DESTINATION

COTTINGHAM COTTINGHAM DAY The first Saturday in July is “Cottingham Day” which attracts over 20,000 people who enjoy the carnival atmosphere, workshops, competitions and numerous stalls. Many of the old favourites returned to the event earlier this year – the dog show, the birds of prey, classic cars and motorcycles with a few new attractions thrown in to entertain all ages. The local shops, cafes and pubs were open to welcome visitors and event took place at the Civic Hall, the Darby and Joan Hall and the churches. COTTINGHAM HORSE SHOW Every summer sees Cottingham host one of the country’s oldest agricultural and equestrian shows. CARAVAN SHOW In September one of the world’s largest caravans shows is held at The Lawns Centre in Cottingham. It is organised by the Hull & East Riding Caravan Manufacturers Association. It features around 130 new touring caravans and about 150 caravan holiday homes and park homes from major British manufacturers. The event attracts thousands of visitors who as well as looking round the event, enjoy the food outlets, small children’s funfair, ice creams and a whole host of other stalls as well as a variety of entertainment, making the event a great family day out.

each year. It is a music event that uses various pubs, clubs and local venue’s to put on a weekend of music, covering a wide range of taste. The festival co-ordinator, Jayney Wright is assisted in the organization and running of the event by a team of volunteer helpers who all play an integral part in making this event what it is today! COTTINGHAM FOOD AND DRINK FESTIVAL The Third Cottingham Food and Drink Festival was held on Sunday 20 September 2015 from 10.30am - 4.00pm on the Market Green and along Hallgate in Cottingham. More than 60 local producers showcased what they had to offer. Cookery demonstrations from some of the regions top chefs took place, including a demonstration from Cottingham’s own Giovanni Calvia from the Olive Garden. The aim of the event is to promote the fantastic local food and drink producers, whilst boosting the local economy. Once again several thousand people attended and the event was a great success COTTINGHAM OPEN GARDENS 2015 Following the success of last year’s Open Gardens, it has been decided to repeat the event this year and around 20 gardens opened their doors on two Sundays in June, the 14th and the 21st. Money raised from the Open Garden events goes to charity. Last year’s event raised over £7,000 for Dove House Hospice.

COTTINGHAM MARKET – Every Thursday For over 25 years the village of Cottingham has had a weekly market, held on a Thursday at Market Green, King Street in the centre of the village. Minding The Business

Our door is always open to any business in Cottingham. We are now also spreading our membership further afield to businesses who work with, supply or support the Cottingham people and our aim is to be very “enterprising” bringing out the best Cottingham has to offer.

The Cottingham & District Traders Association is very active supporting and promoting local businesses. The aim is to improve Cottingham’s shopping experience along with the overall ambience. Working closely with East Riding Council, Cottingham Parish Council and many other Cottingham based groups.

We have supported many local groups over the past few years As an example this year we have doubled our support for the Cottingham Lights Groups, by incrasing our donation from £250 to £500. The village is constantly evolving as it grows. It is well documented to being one of the largest villages in the UK with over 150 retail businesses, it can easily be mistaken for a town as it is far bigger than most others in the area. Cottingham is unique with nearing 20,000 residents, whilst retaining a friendly, village atmosphere. It is lovely to see so many people speak to each other as they browse the very wide variety of shops, cafes, boutiques, restaurants and public houses.

We meet on a regular basis at the King William IV to discuss ways in which we can further promote the area and increase business into Cottingham.

The weekly Thursday market is now growing with new stalls arriving each week offering a huge variety of produce and wares. The Civic Hall is regularly full with craft fairs and charity days. Cottingham is a vibrant village with more to offer than most expect. The CTA membership starts at only 10 per year (£25 with a presence on our very informative website). We are open to all businesses with no barriers on what is right or wrong. Meetings are held very informally and low key – The emphasis on meeting with other traders and working together to promote Cottingham and all it has to offer.

Many events take place during the year, all of which draw in thousands of people. These events include the Cottingham Day celabrations, The Cottingham Springboard Music Festival, The Folk Festival and the very prestigious Food & Drink Festival.

Autumnal Recipe Found by Jan Arnott Autumn has well and truly arrived and with the leaves turning a nice shade of orange, there’s one thing for sure... we’ve all reached for the jumpers and comfort food! For many of us Autumn is the season that screams dark nights, bonfires and delicious warming food but believe it or not it doesn’t have to be unhealthy! I’ve rustled up a recipe here in my kitchen that I found on a handwritten piece of paper inside an old cookery book I bought at a jumble sale in Cottingham thirty years ago. I am super “chuffed” that I can now get to share it with you. So if you’re feeling a little bit like a chef or just fancy a change from the regular food you chomp down, grab a blender, a decent sized saucepan and a spoon and let’s get cooking!

Red Lentil, Chilli & Chicken Soup Here’s what you need to get you started; Saucepan Chopping board Knife Spoon Blender

Grab the lentils, tomatoes and stock then chuck them into the pan, bring to the boil and simmer for a further 15 minutes - don’t let it boil over as you’ll regret it when you’re scrubbing the hob. If you’re happy that the lentils are cooked it’s time to get messy, grab the blender and pour in the contents of the saucepan and give it a blast until it’s a rough puree - you need some lumps left still to add a nice bit of texture. Put the soup back into the saucepan and chuck in your cooked chicken and simmer for a further 5 minutes, be sure to add in salt and pepper for an extra slice of flavour! The wait is now over, the soup is complete so why not get yourself a soft crusty roll, grab a bowl, spoon in a generous helping of this bubbling broth and enjoy!

Now on to the ingredients... 1 red onion, chopped 2 tsp cumin seeds 140g split red lentils Large pinch of chilli flakes 1 tbsp olive oil 800ml vegetable stock large handful of kale, roughly chopped 400g can of chopped tomatoes A pinch of salt & pepper 200g chicken, cooked and diced Now here’s where the hard work starts... grab yourself a large saucepan and dry fry the cumin and chilli until they start darting around the pan. Once your kitchen starts to fill with the scent of chilli and cumin it’s on to the next step.

Ellie’s Story Ellie Mai was born on February 5, 2006 to parents John and Lisa. She was a beautiful little girl who loved everything in life. She loved helping people and always put money in charity boxes and gave it to buskers. Ellie loved going to London to the theatres and Hamleys, playing with her best friends at school, swimming, baking, face-painting and dancing. She was very rarely ill. In January 2012 Ellie became wobbly. Her left hand became difficult to use and her temperament changed. We went to the doctors and presumed it was an inner-ear infection. Then she was sent home from school for falling. The next day we rang for an ambulance and Ellie was admitted to Hull Royal Infirmary. The following day, on her sixth birthday, Ellie had a CAT scan. We had to cancel her birthday party, which made her extremely upset. The scan showed a small abrasive tumour and that afternoon we went to Leeds General Infirmary where Ellie had an MRI scan the following day.

one was very rare and incurable. The prognosis was that Ellie had a maximum of a year to live. The following day Ellie had an operation to insert an accessible portacath in her right side. This would be used for medication, blood transfusions and blood tests. When Ellie came round after the operation she was very poorly and upset. We both gave up work to spend every second we could with our precious daughter. Ellie then underwent six weeks of radiotherapy and chemotherapy at Jimmy’s in Leeds. For the radiotherapy there was a mask attached to Ellie’s head and then attached to a table. She was also placed on steroids, which caused her to gain weight dramatically. This made her very self-conscious and upset, saying she felt ugly. Ellie said she wasn’t a princess any more, and she kept hiding away. John spent the next few months searching the internet for a cure but to no avail. We stayed for most of the six weeks at Eckersley House, a home in Leeds for sick children, but all Ellie wanted to do was go home to her cat, Daisy. Once the treatment was finished we had a long wait until June for another MRI scan which showed the tumour had shrunk a little. Ellie had a five-day course of chemotherapy every month. Sometimes these were delayed by the need for blood transfusions, which became more frequent and caused her to come out in large bruises.

The results came that afternoon. We were greeted by numerous doctors and nurses and the news they gave us changed our lives forever. We were going to lose our little girl.

Ellie wanted to do the things she did before she was ill. She attended school every now and then, usually for half-days as she became tired quickly. She spent a lot of time with our family and Aislinn, her best friend forever.

Ellie had an aggressive diffuse pontine glioma – a brain tumour. This particular

Once Ellie stopped taking steroids she lost her weight and looked amazing.

Supporting The Local Economy People were astonished at how well she looked. Her balance problems were not as noticeable and she was able to use her arm again. Thanks to all the community support we were able to take Ellie to lots of places. The Make-A-Wish Foundation sent us to Disneyland in Paris but with our luck as it was the princesses and other characters went on strike and the tea party was cancelled. We then went to Menorca, a farm in Devon and to London several times to go to the theatre and Hamleys. On December 11 we went to Lapland thanks to the When You Wish Upon A Star charity. In November Ellie was one of the children chosen to switch on the Christmas lights in Cottingham. On December 2 the mum of one of the children in Ellie’s class at school organised a fun day. There was a photo-shoot for all the girls in Ellie’s class followed by a limo ride to a pub for a party with animals and a Punch and Judy show. Ellie had an amazing day and was still quite well in herself. Towards November Ellie’s wobbliness returned and her hands became weak again. The doctor decided to take her off chemotherapy as it was no longer helping.

We knew then she would probably go downhill quite fast. Ellie still never complained or asked questions. She just got on with being her loving, cheery self. After our Lapland trip she started to become ill. She was being sick, complaining of headaches, struggling to walk unaided and the problems with her hand were limiting what she could do. She was taken to Martin House Children’s Hospice where she was placed on a syringe driver which gave her a constant medicine supply. We got to Christmas and New Year but then we barely moved off the settee. Ellie’s medicines were having to be increased more and more often. In her last few days she was unable to eat or drink and she struggled with going to the toilet. She was sleeping between 15 and 18 hours a day and she lost her speech. Not knowing what she was saying broke all our hearts and frustrated and hurt her. We ended up trying to write things down. Ellie was such an amazing, brave little girl and a fighter. The nurses called her unique, and “a one-off.” She kept beating all the odds. We said goodbye four times but she fought so hard and kept proving everyone wrong. In the last week she insisted on visiting Bridlington, feeding the ducks, going to her favourite shop and even though she was so poorly on the Thursday she insisted on going to the Post Office to buy Lisa a lollipop. The following day we had the rare thunder snow and that night Ellie became unconscious. She slipped away in Lisa’s arms on Sunday 20 January 2013. Ellie is now with the angles and out of pain, but we miss her so much. If you would like to help other children like Ellie in anyway please visit the following website: www.elliemaifund.co.uk

Ellie Mai’s fund achieves charitable status Local Cottingham residents will be aware of the Ellie Mai fund, which was set up by John and Lisa Mowforth of the Duke of Cumberland, after the death of their beloved daughter Ellie Mai from a rare brain tumour. Originally set up as a fund to raise money in Ellie Mai’s name for ‘Wish upon a Star’ and ‘Brain Tumour Trust’, the fund has now received charitable status and continues to support good causes both locally and nationally. John and Lisa of the Duke of Cumberland, set up a tea room in the pub in memory of Ellie Mai, and it has proved a huge hit with shoppers in Cottingham. John added: Lisa had always wanted to run her own team room. She wanted to run it with Ellie, but now it is our daughters legacy” www.elliemaifund.co.uk

Travel

Amazing culture close to home ..

It is not everyone’s cup of tea these days to have a relaxing beach holiday. Often to find real local culture you feel you have to travel to far away countries. Italy still retains so much charm and within a three hour flight you can be soaking up the local atmosphere. If you are looking for something different I have a gem of a village in Tuscany which will offer a very different fabulous break. The little hotel has just 9 rooms, at the door it says 3 star but you will receive 5 star hospitality. Family run by 3 generations everywhere you look there is a smiling face. The food is produced from local produce and I would be surprised if anyone does not add a few pounds ~ well you are on holiday. All meals are included during your stay and even breakfast is a wonderful banquet. The village has been reinvented to ensure it survives in this remote location. It is a charming place and located above a stream with a pretty bridge surrounded by stunning scenery along with a natural swimming pool. If you do the cookery course then during your week you can enjoy 5 x 2 hour cooking lessons, I enjoyed making pasta during my stay but risotto, cakes, bread & how to do a proper Carbonara are also taught. The Carbonara is unlike any you have seen before. Of course if you are not into cookery walking would be a super alternative option. Truffle hunting with the dogs is not to be missed! This gives, fresh air & exercise plus the excitement of the dogs hunting out the truffles in the woods. We found both black & white varieties on our hunt, the smell is strong a little like roasted garlic. I tasted plenty freshly grated onto my food. Olive oil tasting including fresh from the press went down well as did wine tasting including a unique white wine produced in the old Roman way in pots buried under the soil. For stress relief you could join in a Yoga class it certainly made us feel good in fact we all said we would have liked to do it everyday. The village runs an Italian language school. If you are not intending to take the language so seriously, you will return having learnt a number of words as Mama & Grand Mama love to chatter away in their native tongue! It is hard to describe this wonderful place, the best way is to visit for yourself at any time of the year you will return home rejuvenated and had the most wonderful experiences including a visit to the worlds smallest volcano! Health & Wellbeing

Kids’ health made easy Diet is the number one cause of obesity and ensuring your child gets the right mix of healthy foods is number one on most parents’ lists, however if you’re like most parents you too often find yourself heating up yet another plate of frozen chicken nuggets or pouring another bowl of cereal just to get your child to eat something. Improving your child’s diet does not have to be a difficult task. Little changes add up to big nutritional gains. Here are 12 quick and easy steps to makeover your child’s diet and prevent weight gain.

Sit down and eat meals as a family

Children learn how to eat by watching you. Prepare a meal that includes lean protein, low-fat dairy, whole grains, fruit and vegetables. Fill your own plate with these nutritious foods, and your child is more likely to follow suit.

Don’t allow junk food in the house

If it isn’t in the house, your kids can’t eat it. Or at least they will have a more difficult time getting their hands on it. Your first line of defence starts at the grocery store. Leave your kids at home when you are grocery shopping, if possible.

Make a list before you leave your house and stick to it. Don’t get distracted by the tempting treats in the market. Buy healthy snacks to keep at home and save the junk for when you are out and can’t avoid it.

Don’t let your kids drink their calories

Many children lose weight simply by giving up sugary beverages. Parents greatly underestimate the number of calories and amount of sugar in what their kids are drinking. Did you know that one can of soft drinks contains 10 teaspoons of sugar? You would never knowingly give your child that much sugar to drink! And juice is not much better. I think of juice as sugar water. Children do not need to drink juice for its vitamin C. They get plenty of vitamin C from other sources. Replace these sugary drinks with water or fresh home made juice.

Bigger is not better

These days, even kid-sized servings are humongous. Most children in my weight loss practice have gained weight from eating too much, not only from eating all junky foods. Remember, all food (even healthy kinds) has calories and if you eat too many calories, you will gain weight. Be sure to serve your children appropriate portions of their meal. At a restaurant, share starters or ask your waiter to pack part of your child’s

portion away before he starts to eat it. We all know how difficult food is to resist when it is sitting in front of you!

Everything in moderation Tell a child (or an adult) that she can’t eat something and that is all she will want to eat. No food should be off limits. Banning foods leads to uncontrollable cravings.

Instead, practice moderation. It is okay to eat ice cream as long as you save it for special occasions and limit it to an appropriate serving size.

Don’t promote the “clean plate club”

The best thing you can teach your children is to eat when they are hungry and stop when they are full. Do not push your kids to eat more than they need, even if you think they have not eaten enough. Our understanding of a proper portion size for a child is overinflated. Push your child to eat the amount you think they need and they will eventually get used to eating that much. And then who wins?

Go back to nature

Processed foods, while more convenient, tend to contain more calories than more natural foods. Whenever possible, stick to foods in their purest forms. Fruits, vegetables, meats and grains should make up the bulk of your child’s diet. Save the fast foods and processed foods for occasional treats. My rule of thumb: If you can’t easily pronounce all the ingredients on the food label, skip it!

Plan ahead

Once a week, sit down and plan the week’s meals. Make sure you have all the ingredients you need to avoid last minute runs to the grocery store. Pre-cook as much as you can over the weekend when you are less stressed. Then, when the weeknight madness arrives, your healthy meal is already prepped!

Introduce new foods slowly

When trying new foods at a meal, be sure to also include a food that your child likes. Don’t be discouraged if it takes several tries before your child actually eats a new food. It may take as many as 15 times or more before your child will try a new food.

Persistence is key

Even though your child may not eat the food, it is important to keep serving it so that your child can see other family members enjoying it. Also, your child should not think that meals are going to be planned only around his or her food preferences. Remember, you are in charge of deciding which foods are served at meal and snacks. Involve your child in meal planning and grocery shopping When your child is old enough, teach him or her about food preparation, cooking and food safety and, later, how to use food label information. While giving your child a role in decision making, remember that you have the final say in food planning.

Incorporate movement into your child’s daily activities

While vigorous exercise is important, any increase in your child’s movement is helpful. Encourage family walks and bike rides. Grab a ball and play some ball games. Please talk to your childs GP or your health visitor before making any drastic changes to their diet. Karen Mann Nutritionist

Gardening: Sponsored by Heritage Landscape Centre

Gardening in November In November the autumn is finally here the clocks have gone back and it feels colder. It’s still a beautiful time of year though, with the trees changing colour. Leave carrots in the ground until needed. To make lifting easier, cover the ground with a 15cm (6in) layer of straw, cardboard or bracken held down with netting or horticultural fleece. Apart from in very cold areas, carrots will keep in the ground until March if necessary. Overwatering, fluctuating temperatures and draughts are the main problems for indoor plants as winter approaches. In centrally heated homes, brown leaves and leaf drop are common problems, so reduce watering and check room temperatures. Now that many plants are returning indoors for the winter, regularly check for pests such as aphids, red spider mite, mealy bug and scale insects. Especially unwelcome visitors include vine weevil grubs which feed on plant roots, causing wilting and often plant death.

Water recently planted evergreens during dry spells, even in winter as they can dry out in windy conditions. Check for dryness even after rain, as it may not penetrate down to the roots sufficiently. Plant out rhubarb crowns in an open position from November to March as long as the ground is not frozen. Cut back herbaceous plants that are not needed for winter interest or food and habitat for wildlife but leave ornamental grasses to provide protection for overwintering beneficial insects. Protect planted containers with bubble plastic or bring under temporary cover, particularly during prolonged rain when compost can become sodden. Remove pot saucers and raise pots off the ground on pot feet. Take root cuttings of plants such as Japanese anemones, campanula, phlox and oriental poppies. Check bonfires before they are lit for sheltering and hibernating animals, such as hedgehogs, toads and frogs. Plant tulip bulbs now – later than most bulbs, but a late planting may help reduce problems with the disease tulip fire. Use only healthy, undamaged, mould-free bulbs and plant at a depth of two or three times the bulb height.

East Stand Views...

The problem is to accommodate everyone and get them out of second gear. We are fifth and four points from the top but they have not really clicked yet. When they do we could take the title. That does however depend on our ability to score and despite the resurgence of Abel Hernandez we do lack a real attacking threat and continuing last years tactic of defending 1-0 leads and conceding late goals against QPR and Blackburn. If they could create more opportunities and take them then hopefully the defensive resilience should turn the frustrating draws to victories. The victories against Nottingham Forest, Ipswich and Birmingham appears to be a sign that it is coming together with a five man midfield supporting Hernandez Last season I wanted 40 points by Christmas and this time we should aim top spot as the spectre of the transfer

As we reach November it is now becoming apparent to most City fans and the wider football community that we have potentially a very good football team and one which should definitely be challenging for the title. We have a central defence of Davies & Dawson which provides the tightest defence in the division and spoilt for choice in midfield with what should have been last years choice. No other team has the options of Elmohamady, Huddlestone, Livermore, Clucas, Hayden, Meyler, Diame, Maloney and soon to be fit Snodgrass.

East Stand Views...

It’s coming together..

to other teams. We have been proved wrong as the Under 21’s are top of the new league and defeated the likes of Ipswich, Palace and QPR. Ipswich are window returns in January. We need renowned for young talent so if the to accumulate the points now as most team has defeated them then maybe we of the aforementioned midfield could do have talent coming through at last!? be tempted by others. Diame probably The Under 18’s are also doing very has a clause and Elmo, Huddlestone well. Like the Under 21’s they’ve moved and Meyler could be out of contract by from matches against Scunthorpe May. Do we risk leaving new deals on and Grimsby etc to sides from the hold till then? If we go up then maybe Championship and don’t look out of they could re-sign if not free to go. The place in this company.. big problem is however the relegation clauses. Hull City cannot afford to Hopefully things are now looking up pay £30 - 40,000 for players in the for the Academy and the development Championship so obviously they wont of young players for Hull City. If the be offering new revised deals to the youngsters very same players who took the wage are doing cuts. The transfer clauses and set prices well now for players will only go once they either against sign new deals or we are promoted. Palace or Actually its not a bad incentive for Watford some of them .. get your finger out and then surely double your wages!? they are on a similar Its promotion or bust really. If we fail level to they could lose lots of key players them. These in the summer . The Allam’s, who teams bring are keeping a very low profile, have their best probably realised that promotion is also youngsters the only way they can offload the club. through to Will they take the gamble of keeping the first team so maybe we do possess Elmohamady for instance to boost the some gems too. The only problem promotion bid or accept and offer of could be one Hull City have had since £3-4 million in January. Ideally we’d the move to the KC which is when to keep him but he could leave on a free give them the opportunity. in May whatever happens. He could still jump ship for the likes of Everton For the past 12 years it has been either or Villa if we did return to the Premier a promotion campaign or fight against League. relegation and few have been given the opportunity. One or two players flirted Away from the first team there is even with first team opportunities in August more optimism. We allegedly have but as they’ve strengthened and players a top quality training pitch, a level 2 regained fitness they have returned Academy and far more significantly a to the shadows once again. One day successful youth team. the opportunities must arrive but if we reach the promised land again in For years everyone has bemoaned May then that wait may continue even the lack of young players coming longer. through the system with the standard of competition being one of the significant issues. The club have invested heavily in the Academy at Bishop Burton with lots of new coaching and fitness staff but we had this belief that the players coming through were not of a particularly high standard compared

FIONA’S FOOD FOR THOUGHT By Fiona Dwyer, broadcast journalist, PR & media consultant, slave to 2 children and a husband.

CITY OF CULTURE LOGO THUMBS UP OR DOWN? So what do you think of the new logo for City of Culture 2017? I must say when I first saw it I wasn’t sure what to make of it. Yes it’s an “H” made up of concentric lines. I could see that! But, if you look closely, you can see that it’s also an optical illusion, with a floating diamond right at its centre – obviously to show what a jewel this part of the country really is! So personally, I am giving it a big thumbs up! I also like the fact that it’s monochrome so that it will look great in all colours. The whole idea of the logo was to shock people and to entice them to look again. I think it’s done its job! People need to forget any preconceptions they have of Hull and East Yorkshire. And when they visit they will be able to see for themselves what a fantastic city we have to offer.

SLEEPS TO CHRISTMAS! I was reliably informed the other day by my 8 year old daughter that there were 58 days, 2 hours, 47 minutes and 18 seconds until Christmas day, courtesy of my Christmas app. Of course, she was utterly oblivious to the fact that it was 1 hour, 13 minutes and 42 seconds past her bedtime! If only there was an app for that!

UPGRADING YOUR PHONE At the time of writing I am in the process of upgrading my iPhone 5 to an iPhone 6s. You would think it was simple – and perhaps for some of you it would be! According to Apple it’s an extremely simple process! Perhaps it’s just because I’m slightly worried that all my contacts won’t migrate across. Anyway, first of all I had to back up everything on my old phone. So after figuring out that when I sync my phone with my computer it also backs it up (I wasn’t sure if it did both, but after a bit of googling I worked it out!) I then had to work out how to swap my sim card because my new phone comes with a 4G sim. I am currently waiting for my old sim to stop working so that I can activate my new sim, at which point I can start setting up my new phone. That, apparently, could take up to 24 hours! So I feel like I’m in limbo! Fortunately I have found a really good step-by-step guide on a technical blog to make the process easier. There are 10 steps and I am only up to step 3! So perhaps next month in my column, if all does not go well, I will be having a proper rant about losing half of my contacts!!!
