Hello Hull,
CONTENTS 4 Travel 6 House & Home Feature
Welcome to the latest edition of HULLMAG. We have another feature packed magazine for you this month. Take a look at the Saint Revisited feature recreating the 60’s look and feel of the original ITC television series, photographed in Hull’s very own Napoleons Casino. It certainly feels like Spring has finally arrived, so perhaps now is the time to consider booking a short break. Marion Owen has plenty of ideas and information in her travel column this month. We have an exclusive interview with Pam Featherstone from Action Coach, the UK’s No.1 Business Coaching firm. Pam offers an insight into what she can offer any businesses or individuals who are looking to grow or just need direction, support and planning assistance. We also meet up with 16 year old Ellie Pollard, winner of the Hook Factor, to find out about her music and her plans for the future.

Did You Know...
“Mortgage” means “death contract.”
GRP FIBRE GLASS
To Contact
Though it might not initially seem so, it wasn’t coined that way for a comedic reason. It basically just means that the contract ends, or “dies,” when either the obligation is fulfilled (meaning the house is paid off) or the property is taken through foreclosure. The word was taken from Law French, a language that was based first on Old Norman and Anglo Norman languages, and later influenced by Parisian French and English. Its name derived from its use in the law courts of England, hence “Law French.”

Business Talk
HULLMAG TALKS TO AWARD-WINNING ACTION COACH PAM FEATHERSTONE In her first year as an ActionCoach Pam Featherstone won Best Clients Results for Yorkshire and Lincolnshire 2013. She’s now been named North UK Coach of the Year 2014. She’s a successful business owner in her own right, with over 30 years experience. So what is it about coaching that inspires you? “My clients are my inspiration. For me, coaching is both a huge privilege and a huge responsibility. My clients let me into their lives and their businesses. It’s not always an easy process, but the benefits are unquestionable. Yes, better and stronger businesses with more profits, but also a much better work/life balance. It’s about inspiring self-belief, motivating them into action and helping to consciously create their future. Owning a business can be an emotional rollercoaster. The trouble is that a lot of people start their own business and then get bogged down with the day to day running of it. They may be really good at what they do, but they spend all their time working in the business, not on their business. It then gets to the stage where they can’t remember why they started their business in the first place because life is a drudge. Every day is “Groundhog Day.”
“grow the business and make more profit”
As children, we were always told us that when we grew up we could be whatever we wanted to be! For some, that may have been an astronaut, a fireman, a ballerina, a television presenter. But I bet some of you decided you wanted to run your own business doing something you loved, make your own money, rather than give it to an employer, decide for yourself what times during the week you wanted to work and when you wanted to play (going to the gym, spending time with your family, going on holiday.) Seeing the difference in the quality of my clients’ businesses and their lives makes everything worthwhile.”
Please remember to mention
Some people are sceptical about coaching. Why is that? “Some people think that having a business coach means you don’t know what you’re doing, but they couldn’t be more wrong. How many top athletes and sports people do you know that don’t have a coach? Their performance is vastly improved by having one. It keeps them at the top of their game. If you continue to do the same thing day in, day out, then you can’t expect your business or your life to improve. It’s about taking action and having a fresh look at your business. I feel so passionate about what I do, my ambition is to help 1500 business owners improve their businesses by 2015, through one-to-one coaching and group coaching.” What’s the difference between one-to-one and group coaching? “My coaching programmes help business owners master time management, leverage, generating cashflow, marketing, team management, finances, creating systems so that everything runs smoothly and so on. So, one-to-one coaching is just what it sounds like. I get right into the heart of a business and see what’s working and what’s not working. We then work together to come up with a plan to move forward, grow the business and make Kelly O’Neill Hair@Quayside more profit. 0ne-toone weekly coaching www.hairatquayside.co.uk optimises momentum 01482 213157 to help the growth of a “I have to say what an amazing difference Pam’s business. coaching makes to me as a manager, I feel inspired Meanwhile, my ActionClub is a 13 week rolling business education group coaching programme which takes place every 2nd and 4th Wednesday of each month. You have a strong belief in helping others. Tell us about the B1G1 project you support. “Buy1Give1 (B1G1) is an innovative, easy way for small businesses to make a real, measurable difference by supporting worthy causes all over the developing world. The difference with B1G1 is that we can link our giving to our sales. In our case, it means that every time someone comes for a coaching session, we make a ‘micro-donation’ to the charity. Our clients choose the nature of this donation - it could be anything from providing books or drinking water for a child, to safeguarding a section of rainforest or helping a farmer. There are over 600 projects available.
“It’s my great pleasure and privilege to watch my clients grow in confidence”
Whilst each donation is relatively small, they make a measurable difference and quickly build up. To date, we’ve already provided vital support for thousands of people across the developing world. 100% of the money raised goes directly towards the projects we pledged to support.

Finally, how would you sum up your coaching style? “If you talk to my clients, I’m not just a coach, I also become their confidante, their best friend, their “go to” person for any issues, problems or challenges they have. It’s all about showing people what can be done and giving them the tools to be able to do it themselves. I often quote the saying: “Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day. Teach him how to fish and he will eat for a lifetime.” Knowing what you want your life and business to look like next year, in five years and in ten years is the first step. It’s my great pleasure and privilege to watch my clients grow in confidence as they focus on these goals and take the necessary action to work towards achieving the life they dream about.” Contact details: To contact Pam please call her on 01482 227060

Domain Names. These days people automatically turn to Google for information, So it pays to have a domain name that not only reflects your site or business - but is also Google friendly too. Short names are easier for your customers or visitors to remember - and that’s important! Names that contain a relevant phrase describing your business or service can be very useful for getting found in Google and other search engines too. You don’t seriously think that surfers will try to memorise a long website address just because you want them to, do you? The only people who’ll commit it to memory are your competitors who want to compare your prices!
Technology What if you can’t get the domain name of your choice? It really depends on how committed you are to that particular name. If you have an existing brand name that you’re already well known for, you’ll probably not want to ditch that name just because you couldn’t get the domain name. After all, it took you a lot of time and money to establish that brand. in that case, you might simply want to try to buy the domain name from the current owner. Be aware that they are likely to want to charge a much higher fee than you’ll normally get when buying new domains (assuming they want to sell it in the first place). On the other hand, if you’re just starting out, you might prefer the cheaper alternative of trying to obtain a domain name first, and then naming your website (or business) after the domain that you’ve acquired. So if you’ve acquired, say, the domain name “leedsweddingcars. co.uk”, then your website and business might be named “Leeds Wedding Cars’. Hull Distribution & Courier Business Keeps On Growing
Browns Distribution are proud to announce their move to new, larger premises in Hull within the next month. Browns Distribution is the brainchild of owner Rob Brown. He saw that there was a gap in the market and set up Browns Leaflet Distribution back in 1993.
Each Friday Rob runs his ‘Friday Tenner Day’. Just check out the company’s facebook page to see where they are delivering that day, if it is in your local area you could receive a £10 note posted through your door!
It is very much a family run business with Rob’s wife Debbie and daughter Danielle organizing and overseeing all the administration and Rob’s two son’s, Kai and Lewis being very much involved in the courier side of the business and organizing their large warehouse. Over the past 11 years Browns Leaflet Distribution has built up an excellent reputation that is trusted across the East Yorkshire and North Lincolnshire region. Long standing clients include Hull City Council, Hull Truck Theatre, The Hull Daily Mail and of course HULLMAG and BEVERLEY MAG.
19
With a team of 15 fully insured, uniformed and fully supervised leaflet distributors, they reach over 10,000 homes per day, delivering leaflets, flyers and magazines to homes and businesses across the local area. Come rain or shine, the team work hard to make sure that their clients advertising information is delivered to where it needs to be at the right time! The forthcoming move to larger premises has meant that the business can now offer new services, which include a local express parcel and urgent same day mail delivery services. The new services will be available for both trade and public. Rob said “We aim to pick up your item and have it delivered within two hours, Monday to Friday 8am to 6pm”.

Recipe Page What Instruments do you play? I play lots of bits of different instruments. Obviously, guitar is my most dominant, along side piano. I also play ukulele, drums trumpet and any kind of whistle or recorder. I wouldn’t however, consider myself to be an experienced whistler. I once tried to learn the violin – but that’s enough said about that.
HULLMAG recently caught up with Ellie Pollard, an up and coming young performer, who recently won the “Hook Factor battle of the bands’ competition, in aid of the Charlie Hook Appeal. Tell us about your family Ellie? I have 12 year old twin sisters Lily and Annabel (they are not identical by the way!) We fight all the time but they are my world and I love them more than life itself. My mum is a full time district nurse, she has always worked hard to support the three of us. As for my day, he is hilarious. Everyone comments on him being the life and soul of the party. My step-dad, Steve, is probably my biggest fan and is always encouraging me. When did you start singing? I have been singing since I was 6 years old. I started off in the choir and I am originally an opera and classical singer having trained with Maureen Hunter for nearly 10 years.
What sort of music to you perform and enjoy? Most of the music I play is typical acoustic covers. Ed Sheeran, Tracy Chapman, Richard Thompson etc. I do however, try to be creative and interpret covers that people wouldn’t expect to hear on an acoustic guitar. I like lots of artists. The Smiths, Johnny Cash, Elvis Presley and Seth Lakeman are some of my all time favourites. But, there is one man who stands out above the rest in my eyes and that is Ed sheeran – he is my idol I also write and perform my own songs. What are your hopes for the future? I am currently studying for my GSCE’s at Cottingham High School and would love to then go to Wyke Collage and study Law, Government and Politics, Economics and Music Technology/Performing Arts. I wouldn’t mind being a politician, because I would actually like to make a difference in peoples lives. If not, then I would certainly like to be involved in events, encouraging young people to follow their music dreams. Ellie performs at a lot of open mic nights around the local area. She can be found at Ella Street Social Club, Newland Avenue on Sunday nights. She will also be performing at Filey Folk Festival on Sunday 4th May, at the Station Pub at 5.30pm. You can also follow her at: www.facebook.com/ElliePollardMusic

Going Out
Enjoy the Rebellious Jukebox
Hull has a range of nightclubs which provide a music for varying tastes but what if your favourite nights were the Welly club, Spiders or Silhouette back in the early 80’s? You may now feel far too old to go somewhere with clubbers younger than your own children and the music may be pale in comparison to your era. The answer to this dilemma has appeared with the introduction of the Rebellious Jukebox to Hull’s night life. The Rebellious Jukebox is a monthly evening of Post Punk music from 1978-1985. This caters for everything from the Buzzcocks to The Specials, Echo and The Bunnymen to Talking Heads, Heaven 17 to The Fall, Pogues to OMD or The Smiths to Grandmaster Flash. If this was your era of even if you have become attracted to the music of one of the most creative eras in modern music then come on down to one of these evenings. Rebellious Jukebox was created by lifelong friends Ian Farrow and Dave Lofts and they prepare a fifty track playlist for every event to include a wide variety of artists covering this era and this includes the recommendations of the growing audience for the post punk night. The monthly events
are currently held at the Halfway House, 595 Spring Bank West and attract between 50-100 people for the free evenings. The next evening will be held on either Friday 4th April. If you fancy some great music, would like a night out with people of the same age and taste then come down to the Rebellious Jukebox. Who knows you may even come across some old friends who you haven’t seen since the 1980s? Look for ‘Rebellious Jukebox PostPunk Night’ on Facebook. You may recognise people from this era and the songs from the playlists. Words: Chris Warkup

The Saint Revisited
Saintly goings on in Hull as O-Ten Photography recreates the cult 1960’s ITC classic television show The Saint. HullMag meets up with Hull photographer Chris Oaten; mastermind behind The Saint photoshoot, to establish his motives for the project. Why The Saint? As a child I grew up with all these ITC shows; Dangerman, Man in a Suitcase and The Saint to name a few. Last year I recreated Man in a Suitcase, these photos were published in over 47 different countries, thanks to car magazine The Imp, as this was the car McGill drove in MIAS. The photos even landed in the lap of the actor Richard Bradford who played McGill, who kindly signed some for me. So this year I thought I would go bigger and bolder with The Saint. How long does a project like this take to plan? Around 2 months to prep and plan for me, god is really in the detail as there is a lot of research needed to make a shoot like this work. However I see this as a labour of love and not hard work, so it’s fun all the way for me.
25 What kind of research was needed to make this shoot happen? Firstly I needed to find the famous car Simon Templar drove in The Saint, a Volvo P1800 in white. This turned out to be easier than i thought as it only took one e-mail to www.volvoenthusiastsclub.co.uk who kindly put me in touch with Kevin Price who owns the actual car driven by Roger Moore aka Simon Templar in the TV show, Registration number ST1 (71 DXC). Kevin kindly drove this stunning car all the way up to Hull from Birmingham to be part of this shoot, I cannot thank him enough for his time. (www.thesaintvolvoclub.co.uk) Next came the clothes. I found a vintage sharkskin grey suit and a few vintage ties on Etsy along with vintage ties from E-Bay. I love these websites so much as I find it such a thrill to find something so unique. Then there is the watch. Simon Templar wore a Bulova Regatta 23 watch which I managed to track down on E-Bay. However this needed some tlc so I contacted Bulova in the hope that they would help to restore this vintage piece back to it’s glory. Bulova did an amazing job restoring this watch, even finding the same gold original strap. It looks like new! Could you tell us about the location and why you chose it. The Saint was often in casinos as he was a rich playboy of the 1960’s, so I contacted Napoleons in Hull. They were thrilled to help, even asking their staff if they would kindly spare the time to be part of the photos as extras and

The Saint Revisited croupiers. Everybody at Napoleons were fantastic, they were extremely helpful, i especially want to thank Penny for organising this. Please tell us more about the people involved. On contacting NAPA, Anlaby Road, Hull, I spoke to Barbara Dawson who highly recommended a dance teacher called Paddy Start as she believed he would make a very dashing Simon Templar. Barbara was right, Paddy has a charisma that is very rare to see these days, a man needs to wear the suit not the other way around, Paddy wore the suit and performed so naturally as Simon Templar. Now we needed the bad guys. The guys that would keep The Saint on his toes. Peter Street would fit this perfectly, he is one of my very best friends and has the perfect look to play a bad guy who owns a casino. Peter would be teamed up with 2 of the staff from Napoleons, aka his henchman. These guys worked brilliantly together, I certainly wouldn’t go into a casino and cause any kind of trouble with these guys around! Now The Saint is a rich cheeky playboy so he was certainly in need of a love interest for the shoot. I asked Kitty, my muse, to play this role. She did a fantastic job. She says that Paddy was amazing to work with, I think you can tell this from the photos that they got along very well. We needed as many people as we could muster for this shoot so we even persuaded our make-up artist Hayley Young to be part of this too. She looked great and kindly took the time to make sure everybody looked their best. She has her own business called Hayley SFX (www.hayleysfx.com).
Templar (Paddy) as this was a trademark of The Saint to look straight at the camera in the series where a halo would appear above his head. So everybody just played Blackjack and Roulette to capture the natural expressions of winning and enjoying an evening out together. So apart from the HullMag front cover and feature, what is next for these photographs? Practical Classics magazine are extremely interested in these photos, also i am sending them to Roger Moore to ask if he would sign a photo or two so I could put these in my portfolio. These photos will also be sent to many other magazines throughout the UK and globally. The Saint has a cult following so I am sure there will be a lot of people around the world who would like to see these photos too. If you would like to see more of the photographs taken by Chris Oaten from the The Saint shoot you can find them at: www.otenphotography.co.uk/the-saint.html
How did you approach shooting the scenes? I wanted the photos to look like stills from the show rather than posed photos. The brief for all the models was to act naturally and to not look at the camera, well apart from Simon

sharpness and Sagbo out of form and played out of position. We will require inspiration from midfield or who knows maybe even Curtis Davies once again. If only we had Jelavic and Long available.
Hull City in Europe little did we imagine that in the dark days of the late 1990’s.
East Stand Views...
Two weeks ago we defeated Brighton in a cup match being broadcast live on ITV 4. In 1998 we lost to them in the league and were 6 points adrift of the entire football league and Brighton were not much better themselves. Just surviving as a football league club was our ambition that season and now we are contemplating European football at the KC Stadium. Provided Arsenal win their Semi Final and achieve a top four Champions League position the winners of the Hull City and Sheffield United semi final will gain a place in the Europa League.
We have to be confident of defeating Sheffield United. We have defeated lower division sides on this cup run and have the class to defeat them if everyone plays to their potential at Wembley. They must turn up and play as Sheffield despite being in Division 1 have won nine consecutive games and have defeated Aston Villa, Fulham and Nottingham Forest in their cup run. They are very much beatable but it will not be easy especially as their strength is apparently their defence and our attack is relatively weak. Fryatt is doing ok though maybe Championship standard, Aluko has yet to regain his
We must defeat them however as to many fans from the 1980’s they are the club we despise the most. We lost out on promotion from Division 3 to them in 1984 by a superior goal difference of one and our former goalscoring hero Keith Edwards scored around 40 of their total. Forget rivalries with Scunthorpe or Leeds, Sheffield were the team we hated the most for many years. Payback time is due and let this be at Wembley.
Besides all the cup glory, a strange phrase to associate with Hull City to be honest, Premier League survival looks probable. We reached 30 points with the 4-0 victory at Cardiff and a couple more wins should almost secure our position. Later this month we play West Brom and West Ham and four points from these fixtures could take us a long way towards survival before thoughts turn to Wembley in April. One of the main reasons for our confidence in survival is of course our new £14 Million forward line. It is still early days for Jelavic and Long but they have the potential to trouble most defences in the Premier League and snatch goals out of nothing. Until January 2014 we have not little attacking threat in both spells in the top division but now there is the potential of goals against the top teams and in games were we may be under the cosh. Previously we have needed at least six opportunities
to put one away but we may have now acquired some potency to add to our passing ability.
Our overall attacking play has diminished recently however. There has been a greater reliance on the long ball to our relatively isolated forwards and Huddlestone’s influence has reduced since his high profile haircut as opponents have put a greater emphasis on stopping him play. We also miss Brady badly as we have no width or pace on the left without him.
One of the ironies of all of the current success is that the Hull Tigers name change decision is made by he FA in the week preceding Wembley. Whatever decision is made won’t affect me and yet potentially Hull City will never have had a greater opportunity to market our existing name, or brand, than in April and May 2014. We could we be watched by hundreds of millions across the World if we reach the FA Cup Final and surely that could help attract a better sponsorship deal for next year. Wembley appearances could also be beneficial to future team building as the most significant line within the ‘Allam Letter’ last week is that their funds have ran out. Hull City need to be self sufficient and boost the squad for the Europa league, if we get here, so we now need to aim for a top ten position and the additional Sky windfall which that provides and capitalise from potentially two Wembley appearances.

These are truly heady days for Hull City fans. Not only are we confident of Premier League survival but there is now the enticing thoughts of a Wembley appearance, a possible FA Cup Final and even the Europa League!

FIONA’S FOOD FOR THOUGHT By Fiona Dwyer, broadcast journalist, PR & media consultant, slave to 2 children and a husband. NOWHERE TO HIDE!
It’s seems that no matter where we are, someone can always find us! We all have our smartphones because they make life so much easier and we can deal with everything while we’re out. We can update our status on Facebook while we’re queueing at the supermarket. Or perhaps we’ll send a tweet on Twitter. Or comment on someone’s LinkedIn profile. And, of course, we often feel we have to reply to an email as soon as it’s sent! But do we really want to be so available ALL of the time? We live in a world where we expect everything to be “instant”, but I do sometimes wonder if taking a step back now and again would do us all the world of good! GAMING AND TABLETS
While we’re on the subject of connecting with people, how many of your children play games on the Xbox, Playstation, Wii or iPad? And do they hook up to “join” their schoolfriends while each is sitting in their own house? It’s something that’s come up for me recently and I’m investigating the safeguards at the moment. For instance, if my son joins in a game with a friend online, and that friend is playing with someone we don’t know, how does that work? There are also games where you’re, in effect, text messaging each other, rather than actually talking. Who keeps an eye on what’s being said? My point is, it’s so easy for these gaming devices to become our “childcare”, in that they keep the children entertained while we get on with other things – whether it’s housework or replying to emails! I don’t think any parent would disagree. But it’s really important to keep an eye on security – and put any blocks in place that you deem necessary. That way our children can enjoy what they’re doing, but stay safe at the same time. PENGUINS
By the way, have you seen the Gentoo penguins at The Deep yet? They are absolutely gorgeous and definitely worth a visit to The Kingdom of Ice if you haven’t. You can see them on three levels, both underwater and on land. “Project Penguin” tells us all about the threats to the penguins’ habitat as well as issues like climate change and ocean acidification. It will also help raise funds for research work in the wild to help protect endangered penguins. But at the end of the day, they are seriously cute! There’s even one called Fiona! What more can I say?!
