‘Reflections of Japan in East Yorkshire’
Opening on Saturday, 16 October at Beverley Art Gallery will be ‘Reflections of Japan in East Yorkshire’, a unique exhibition bringing together a selection of items from private collections across East Yorkshire and artwork by Laura Boswell. The idea for the exhibition came about more than two years ago when the Japanese Embassy introduced the ‘Japan-UK Season of Culture’, a celebration of the many facets of Japanese culture in the UK. Beverley Art Gallery was eager to participate in this national opportunity and is pleased to confirm that the upcoming exhibition is indeed one of the official events of the ‘Japan-UK Season of Culture’. Originally, the exhibition was intended to show a unique collection of toys from the East Riding based collector, Jane Irisa. Then COVID came and the exhibition had to be postponed. During the long lockdowns, curator Helena Cox came up with an idea to widen the exhibition’s appeal, and the gallery ran a call-out on social media, asking East Yorkshire residents to get in touch. As a result, over the lockdowns, a group of Japan-lovers has been formed with members ranging from Japanese expats to art and craft collectors, those who worked and lived in Japan and who came back to East Yorkshire enriched and inspired by Japanese culture. The group met Helena and over Zoom during the

be showing examples of her work capturing the stunning Yorkshire and wider British landscapes in the traditional Japanese medium of coloured woodblock prints. Laura’s long-standing passion for Japan saw her undertake numerous study trips to Japan to emulate the technique. The result is a true meeting of the two cultures, presenting British landscapes with distinctly Japanese optics and aesthetic sensitivity. The exhibition will also feature reproductions from a book called ‘Omochabako’ illustrated by Kawasaki Kyosen and published in 1924, which includes drawing of 100 traditional Japanese toys. The original book is in the collections of The British Library.
lockdowns and shared their passion and stories about Japan. Beverley Art Gallery curator Helena Cox explained: “As the lockdowns came to an end, we decided to change the focus of the exhibition and include a wider variety of Japanese items. The core of the exhibition will still be Jane Irisa’s stunning collection of traditional Japanese toys, which she collected from all over Japan during her many journeys there. Jane previously worked in the Oriental and Japanese sections of the British Library, and therefore her collection is brilliantly documented and well researched. “To accompany this collection, we will be showing a selection of items and stories from private collections, including rare items from the Imperial Court, calligraphy, and decorative items, as well as artwork inspired by Japanese culture and a stunning collection of Japanese vintage kimonos.” One of the items, on loan from Beverley-born Philip Highy, is a calligraphy he obtained during one of his many visits to Japan, together

with the Eton College Chapel Choir. Helena Cox added : “The calligraphy reads ‘Once in a lifetime experience’ – we sincerely hope that this exhibition will indeed be a unique experience for our visitors, celebrating the rich connections between East Yorkshire and Japan”. To celebrate the mutual influence between Japan and Great Britain, the Gallery is delighted to present a selection of works by the renowned printmaker, Laura Boswell. Laura will
As an audio-visual feature, the exhibition will show a series of video presentations made by Japanese exchange students from Ochanomizu University (Japan) and Hull University, presenting the stories behind traditional Japanese toys and customs. The exhibition will open on 16 October, and will run until early 2022. Entry will be free and it is not anticipated that there will be any need to book in advance. www.eastridingmuseums.co.uk
HULL TRADE FIREPLACES Hull Trade Fireplaces are now heading into their 5th winter of trading and have boasted HUGE savings as always. 2021 has seen a massive rise in costs of materials across the building industry and fireplaces and fires manufacturers are unfortunately no exception. Hull Trade Fireplaces however, are very aware of the value of Low Prices and how important this is to their end customer. So much so that their Stove Package Deal price is now frozen until 2022!! “Our industry often faces annual price increases around September or October, this year has already seen a hike in prices across the full line of gas, electric and solid fuel fires and fireplaces. We are due another increase again before Christmas time! To reassure our customers and keep our prices the lowest locally we have vowed to freeze our prices to the customer and ‘take the hit’ on the increases from our suppliers.” The value for money that Hull Trade Fireplaces offer from their impeccable installation service to their high quality products is second to none. Wood burning stove packages are as popular as ever in Hull. “Our Stove package deal includes a fully DEFRA APPROVED 5kw
stove, Hull city is a smoke -controlled area, meaning if someone was installing a woodburning stove in the area it would have to be a DEFRA approved appliance. The stoves we offer in our package are also 2022 compliant, so fully ready for the new law change next year.” The now established shop on Holderness Road, Hull has had yet another refurbishment done this year. Due to the latest trend surrounding fires and living room designs, Hull Trade Fireplaces now offer unique custom built media walls. These are available to view in their showroom.

“We offer custom built media walls complete with 3/2 or 1 sided electric fires to go under wall mounted televisions. These are certainly proving very popular with our customers and we are fortunate enough to be able to offer the full installation service including the building of the frame and the plastering as well as offering to hang the T.V! Our skilled team of installers can build walls with cavity shelves, L.E.D lights and even sound bar or sky box alcoves. Any design our customer wants we can cater for, all at great value prices. They are available for both gas or electric fires.” The great service and high demand has meant that Hull Trade Fireplaces now have more than 4 installation teams working under their name. A far cry from the days the single handed installer and business director Jasper Worthington being their sole installer. Hull Trade Fireplaces is a unique and successful business story that grows from year to year. From two friends, Jasper and Arthur, with a similar background in the industry having a vision those 5 years ago, they are now well on their way to having built one of Hull’s premier fireplace businesses from scratch. Our prices are now frozen until 2022 - unlike our customers ;) To Advertise Please Telephone 01964 552 470

Mortgage price war helps lift the average UK house prices to record high of £262,954 The housing market has remained strong during most of the pandemic
A succession of bargain basement mortgage deals from some of the UK’s biggest lenders have helped lift average UK house prices to the highest level on record. A combination of ultra-low interest rates with pent-up demand and a rebounding jobs market saw the price of a typical home rise 0.7% month-on-month in August to £262,954, according to lender Halifax. The latest data suggests a revival of momentum in the market from July’s 0.4% lift, which came off the back of a 0.6% decline in June ahead of the tapering of the stamp duty holiday. It means the average price of a UK home is 7.1% higher now than the £245,602 recorded in August 2020. That is also £23,600 higher than when the housing market was starting to reopen in June 2020. The mortgages sector is looking attractive, with nearly 50 two-year deals available at rates below 1%. Latest offers from banks include Barclays’ 0.92% two-year fix and
NatWest’s five-year fix at 0.98%. Platform, the lending arm of the Co-operative Bank, has reduced the rate on its 40% deposit product to 0.95% while Nationwide this week launched its lowest-ever mortgage deal for new customers at a rate of 0.87%. Mark Harris, chief executive of mortgage broker SPF Private Clients, said: “Property prices are rising due to lack of stock, while cheap borrowing rates give borrowers confidence to go after the property of their dreams in the race for space.” Jeremy Leaf, a north London estate agent and a former residential chairman of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors, said: “These prices are as much to do with stock shortages and cheap mortgage finance as activity.” He added: “Market strength has not run its course and we are finding pent-up demand is alive and well, resulting in plenty of transactions, albeit at a lower level than we saw a few months ago.” Jan Crosby, UK head of infrastructure, building and construction at KPMG said: “First time buyers and existing renters are keen to get on the ladder quickly and this is facilitated through cheap and high Loan to Value mortgages along with, for some, savings built
up during the pandemic.” Halifax’s figures came on the same day that FTSE 250 housebuilder Vistry hiked its profits guidance. Investors piled into Vistry, sending the shares up 71p, or 5.8%, to 1294.5p. Other builders including Bellway and Barratt also made gains,
respectively up 14p to 3540p and 1.4p to 716p, as the City welcomed today’s positive updates. Vistry said house price inflation is “more than offsetting cost increases with supply chain issues.” CEO Greg Fitzgerald said: “Overall the mortgage market is in a good place.”
UK Property Facts:
Just 7% of the UK is We’re a land of tiny ‘urban sprawl’ homes You’ve probably heard how our green and pleasant lands are under threat from the dreaded urban sprawl. Villages become towns, towns become cities and cities take over whole forests to house the growing population. In reality, just 6.8% of the UK is classed as ‘urban’, according to the UK National Ecosystem Assessment report. In England, this rises to just over 10%, but is still less than semi-natural grasslands (14.4%) and only just higher than woodlands (9.5%).
As we have such a small area of urban land, it goes that the many homes that have to fit into it will be small. In fact, the UK has some of the smallest homes on average in Europe. A Policy Exchange report puts the average size of a new build home in the UK as 76 sqms. In France, the figure is 112 sqms, while the US is 214 sqms. Since then the government has created a national space standard, whereby the minimum size of new home would be 93 sqms – still well below many European countries.

How To Make The Most Of A Small Kitchen Planning a small kitchen requires meticulous attention to detail, innovative storage solutions and a clever use of materials. It might sound daunting but if you take on board some simple – albeit transformative – tips when it comes to appliances, units and finishes, you can easily overcome the challenge. To help, we asked a range of space-saving experts – including kitchen and interior designers – to share their best advice. Assess Your Space & Plan Your Layout
No matter the size of your kitchen, there’s often a tendency to try and cram in as much as possible. “We encourage clients to avoid this,” explains Magnus Eriksen, leading kitchen designer. “Especially in smaller kitchens where space is limited. We advocate doing less but doing it well.” Interior designer Anna Hewitt agrees: “You have to be quite clever when designing a compact kitchen. First, make a list of your essential appliances – sink, fridge, cooker, dishwasher and bin. From there, think about the ergonomics – ideally you want your dishwasher and bin near the sink, with the cooker set some distance away to allow for decent prep space.”
Remember, when designing for the most diminutive of spaces some clever design solutions can help. “Include a pantry and tall cupboards for cooking equipment and large appliances, while retaining enough food preparation surface area by designing full height units in the corners of the room or at the end of a run of units,” suggests interior designer Henry Parlour. “That way, the space in the middle can be fitted with low-level units with wall units above, allowing a decent proportion of countertops and space for a hob and sink. Corners can be tricky as you want to use every available inch, so clever pullout solutions can work well.”

If you have a small kitchen, avoid clutter and overcomplicating it. “Keep it simple and clean throughout,” agrees interior designer Benji Lamb. “The use of simple plain fronted white units will evoke an uncomplicated look, which is going to help make things look more spacious, too. Also, handle-less door fronts and drawers are a good idea, as they have a streamlined, unfussy look to them – which let other aspects of the kitchen do the talking. They also look good in traditional galley kitchens where you want to take a more modern approach.”
Creating a bank of cabinetry along one wall is a great way of streamlining and opening up the space, too. “Tall wall units are particularly suited to narrow, galleystyle kitchens as using this space ensures the area feels less cramped,” explains Ben Burns. “Avoid the temptation to compromise the proportions of cabinetry in order

to fit more in, as it will often serve to further highlight the spatial challenge of a space,” adds Magnus. “Instead, think about how much storage you really need – after all, we’re all guilty of having more mismatched mugs and glasses than we actually use. It may seem counterintuitive, but an open Continued page 10

shelf rather than wall hung units can help make a space feel more spacious, too. Yes, there will be more dusting required, but it can be transformative.”
Be Meticulous With Storage It may seem obvious, but storage, in all forms, is key when it comes to designing small spaces; if you don’t have good storage, then daily life becomes chaotic. “Having a decent cabinet maker who can turn every nook and cranny into storage for things like cookbooks, wine racks and spice shelves will be a worthwhile investment, but most kitchen companies, even at

the lower end of the market, will have some clever design tricks up their sleeve to maximise even the smallest of spaces,” says Henry. “Put as much thought into the interior organisation of the cupboards as you do the overall aesthetic, too,” says interior designer Katharine Parker. “And remember, everything needs to be planned meticulously before you start construction. If everything has its place, nothing will be left on the counter to ruin the look of your new kitchen.” Continued page 12

House & Home Choose & Place Appliances Carefully
“Start by making a wish list of appliances and begin plotting them on your plan,” suggests interior designer Yoko Klien. “Some appliances are more versatile than others – for example, a microwave can be place either in a wall cabinet or a tall cabinet, while an oven can be either in a base cabinet or a tall cabinet – so be sure to consider all the options.” When it comes to the layout, keep it simple and uncluttered; especially when it comes to surfaces. “Consider installing a boiling water tap, as it may take up space under the sink, but a clean, empty worktop is easier to maintain. You may wish to consider a combi microwave oven to save space, too,” says Magnus. Elsewhere, hide

appliances away behind cabinets and under the counters, and consider concealing a neat washer and dryer vertically. Integrated appliances will also make the kitchen feel more streamlined – while a slimline dishwasher is the answer if the space is really tight.
Don’t Forget Lighting
Planning your lighting is essential in small spaces, especially if you have limited natural light. “Task lights and pendants work particularly well above work surfaces to illuminate preparation areas but consider integrating lighting with dimmers throughout the rest of the space to allow you to adjust the light depending on the time of day and whether you are entertaining,” suggests Ben. Meanwhile, layering decorative

Use Flooring To Give The Illusion Of More Space
If you are dealing with a long narrow galley-style kitchen, a great illusion can be running the floorboards left-right which makes the room feel much wider than doing the same lengthwise – equally, if the kitchen is literally in a corner of a dining/living space, have the same flooring throughout rather than zoning it and emphasising its size.
Make The Most Of The Finishes
and functional lighting will ensure a balance of form and function – whether it’s a functional sconce above a sink or a decorative pendant hanging over your kitchen island. “If you love the look of pendants but are worried about making the space feel closed, opt for crystal or glass to achieve an airy and flowy feel,” says lighting and interiors expert Megan Selk. “When space is more limited, a flush mount is a great option from the vast category of ceiling lighting. Flush mounts can be large, medium, and small; they come in a vast range of styles from traditional to more decorative starbursts and other sculptural forms.”
Push The Budget On Materials
“The one advantage of a small space is you can consider splashing

out on a nice worktop or statement tiles as you don’t have a big area to fill – and the same goes for handles,” says Anna. “Keep the finishes relatively simple, adding interest with one or two key elements, whether that’s the handles, tiles or worktop.” “When choosing finishes and elements such as countertops, wall tiles and splashbacks, hardware, flooring, and lighting, spend time allocating your budget wisely and invest in quality, seeing a small kitchen as an opportunity to showcase the decorative details that reflect your style,” adds Henry.
Know That Neutrals Are Safe, But Bold Colours Can Work
Cupboard finishes and surfaces should form part of the same tonal

narrative, as it will give an airy and considered feel to a space. Katharine explains: “For a recent project, I combined a soft grey paint finish with weathered oak cupboards. This timber features visible grain to add richness but tempers it with a soft grey finish to keep the overall vibe light and contemporary.” As for colour tones it’s tempting to go neutral with small kitchens but having a block of colour can lift small spaces, while dark colours can also be really impactful. “Go for a bold tone for all the doors with a lighter contrasting material for countertops (or vice versa with a lighter door colour and dark countertop), and something eye catching such as textured metal for the handles,” suggests Henry. Just be aware a single bold colour is fine, but too many bold colours or big patterns in a small space can be tricky to execute. “If you’re looking to make an impact with colour then opt for tonality within a single colour pallete,” says Magnus.
Light reflective finishes will bounce natural light around a small space and make it instantly feel bigger. “For a recent project, we chose a light grey composite stone, antiqued mirror panelling for behind the hob (which has the double value of being both glamorous and easy to clean) and polished nickel ironmongery and tapware,” explains Katharine. “It’s best to keep all metal finishes uniform in colour – nothing makes a space feel more cluttered than a mixture of competing finishes. Polished nickel handles sit beautifully with a stainless steel Rangemaster cooker and pretty wall lights with nickel detailing. While I love brass and bronze, in a smaller space I always feel the lighter and cooler tone of polished nickel or chrome feels sleeker and more spacious.” Finally, keep window treatments on the simple side, too. “An unstructured roman blind is perfect, linen adds pretty texture, and a simple vertical stripe pattern always makes a smaller window appear more generous,” adds Katherine.

New reads for September
If you want something new to read this month, look no further. From a follow up to one of the biggest thrillers in recent years to a series of laidback holiday reads, September’s selection has something for everyone... A Slow Fire Burning by Paula Hawkins A Slow Fire Burning is the new thriller from the bestselling author of The Girl On The Train and Into The Water. Laura has spent most of her life being judged. She’s seen as hottempered, troubled, a loner. Some even call her dangerous. Miriam knows that just because Laura is witnessed leaving the scene of a horrific murder with blood on her clothes, that doesn’t mean she’s a killer. Bitter experience has taught her how easy it is to get caught in the wrong place at the wrong time. Carla is reeling from the brutal murder of her nephew. She trusts no one: good people are capable of terrible deeds. But how far will she go to find peace? Innocent or guilty, everyone is damaged – and some are damaged enough to kill. A brilliant read for anyone who loves a gripping murder mystery. Everyone Is Still Alive by Cathy Rentzenbrink It is summer on Magnolia Road when Juliet moves into her late mother’s house with her husband Liam and their young son, Charlie. Preoccupied by guilt, grief and the struggle of working motherhood, she can’t imagine finding time to get to know the neighbouring families, let alone fitting in with them. But for Liam, a writer, the morning coffees and after-school gatherings soon reveal the secret struggles, fears and rivalries playing out behind closed doors – all of which are going straight into his new novel. Juliet tries to bury her unease and leave Liam to forge these new friendships. But when the rupture of a marriage sends ripples through the group, painful home truths are brought to

light. And then, one afternoon at a party, a single moment changes everything. The fiction debut from Sunday Times bestselling author Cathy Rentzenbrink, Everyone Is Still Alive is a novel that explores the deeper realities of marriage and parenthood and the way life defies our expectations at every turn. Heatwave by Victor Jestin Leonard is an outsider, a 17-yearold uncomfortable in his own skin who is forced to endure a family camping holiday in the South of France. Tired of creeping out of beach parties after only a couple of beers, he chooses to spend the final Friday night of the trip in bed. However, when he cannot sleep due to the sound of partying outside his tent, he gets up and goes for a walk. As he wanders among the dunes, he sees Oscar, one of the cooler kids, drunk in a playground, hanging by his neck from the ropes of a swing. Frozen into inaction, he watches Oscar struggle to breathe until finally his body comes loose and falls lifeless to the ground. Unable to think straight, he buries Oscar in the sand and returns to the campsite where, oppressed by the ferocious heat and the weight of what he did and did not do, he tries to spend the remaining hours of the holiday as if nothing had happened. Told over the space of a long weekend, this intense and brilliant novel is the story of an adolescent struggling to fit in and a gripping psychological thriller that poses the existential question: Is doing nothing sometimes the absolute worst thing you can do?. Jane Is Trying by Isy Suttie Jane is trying. She’s been trying for a baby, with increasing desperation as her 30s sail by. Now, she’s trying to make a new start back home with her overprotective parents, having left her career and cheating fiancé behind in London. With an increasing load on her plate, friends and family who think if she only listens to them,

she’ll have a perfect life, and a brain which questions every decision she’s ever made, can Jane conquer her demons and step forward on her own? An ideal read for anyone who loves the warm yet hilarious characters in Marian Keyes’ novels – or anyone who’s still trying to get their sh** together in their 30s. Shooting Martha by David Thewlis This darkly funny novel is set between a London film set and a villa in the south of France. Celebrated director Jack Drake can’t get through his latest film – his most personal yet – without his wife Martha’s support. The only problem is, she’s dead. When Jack sees Betty Dean – actress, mother, trainwreck – playing the part of a crazed nun on stage, he is struck dumb by her resemblance to Martha. Desperate to find a way to complete his masterpiece, he hires her to go and stay in his house in France and resuscitate Martha in the role of ‘loving spouse’. But as Betty spends her days roaming the large, sunlit rooms of Jack’s mansion and her evenings playing the part of Martha over scripted video calls with Jack, she finds her method acting taking her to increasingly dark places. And as Martha comes back to life, she carries with her the truth about her suicide – and the terrible act she committed beforehand. A thriller that Hitchcock fans will love. The Island of Missing Trees by Elif Shafak It is 1974 on the island of Cyprus. Two teenagers, from opposite sides of a divided land, meet at a tavern in the city they both call home. The tavern is the only place that Kostas, who is Greek and Christian, and Defne, who is Turkish and Muslim, can meet in secret. In the centre of the tavern, growing through the roof, is a fig tree. This tree will witness their hushed, happy meetings and their surreptitious departures; and it will be there when the war breaks out, the capital is reduced to rubble, and the teenagers vanish and break apart. Decades later in
north London, 16-year-old Ada Kazantzakis has never visited the island where her parents were born. Desperate for answers, she seeks to untangle years of secrets, separation and silence. And the only connection she has to the land of her ancestors is a fig plant growing in the back garden of their home. The Plot by Jean Hanff Korelitz The Plot is thrilling page-turner from Jean Hanff Korelitz, author of HBO’s gripping series The Undoing, which starred Nicole Kidman and Hugh Grant. When a young writer dies before completing his first novel, his teacher, Jake (himself a failed novelist) helps himself to its plot. The resulting book is a phenomenal success. But what if somebody out there knows? After many threats, it transpires that it is an actual person’s real-life story. The closer Jake gets to the real people he’s fictionalised, the more violence he unearths. And if he can’t figure out who he’s dealing with, he risks something far worse than the loss of his career. And addictive read. The Turnout by Megan Abbott With their long necks and matching buns and pink tights, Dara and Marie Durant have been dancers since they can remember. Growing up, they were trained by their glamorous mother, founder of the Durant School of Dance. After their parents’ death in a tragic accident nearly a dozen years ago, the sisters began running the school together, along with Charlie, Dara’s husband and once their mother’s prized student. The three have perfected a dance that keeps the studio thriving. But when a suspicious accident occurs, just at the onset of the school’s annual performance of The Nutcracker – traditionally a season of competition, anxiety and exhilaration – an interloper arrives and threatens their delicate balance. Roy Woodcock’s
good,” he said.
World of Wine I want to go off piste this month (stop sniggering at the back!) and write about whisky. Malt whisky in particular. It’s from Scotland, right? Stands to reason . . . it’s why we ask for a Scotch! Well, yes and no. Last time I looked there were 134 distilleries licensed to produce Scotch whisky. Yet, over the last few years, whisky connoisseurs have become increasingly enamoured with whiskies from Japan, many of them similar to single-malt Scotches in their methods and composition, but with a character all their own. Three Japanese whiskies took top trophies at last year’s World Whisky Awards: Suntory Hakushu, Single Malt 25 Year Old was named World’s Best Single Malt, reclaiming the title it first won in 2018; while Fuji Single Grain and Ichiro’s Malt & Grain also picked up gongs Whisky, of course, is produced around the world and increasingly you’re seeing more of them in your local supermarket, including some from England and Wales alongside the long-popular Irish whiskey (like the Americans they add an “e” to the spelling. Penderyn, a Welsh single malt, is a common site; Cotswolds Single Malt won’t be too hard to find either. But this month I was delighted to take part in a whisky tasting over Zoom for Filey Bay, the first single malt whisky made in
Yorkshire. The Spirit of Yorkshire Distillery is based at Hunmanby Grange, near Filey, and is a joint venture between two farmers: Tom Mellor, well known as the founder, with his late wife Gill, of Wold Top Brewery in 2003, and David Thompson. The idea came to them a few years ago when they realised that Tom’s farm was sending a lot of his topquality malting barley to Scotland to make Scotch. With his own water source also on the farm, surely they could make whisky themselves, closer to home? Spirit of Yorkshire was founded in 2016 and the first Filey Bay whisky went on sale in 2019 and has been going from strength to strength (interestingly 46 per cent alcohol by volume compared to the more usual 40 per cent) ever since. The distillery boasts two copper stills, the largest outside of Scotland, and thousands of various cask types – including sherry butts and bourbon casks, all of which help create subtle, complex, flavours. It’s a complete field to bottle operation and I have to say the results are remarkable. The first point Joe Clark, Spirit of Yorkshire’s Whisky Director (and, in essence, the Master Distiller) made at the tasting was young whisky can be absolutely brilliant. “Just because it doesn’t have ’10 years’ on the bottle doesn’t mean it’s not

We tasted six samples, five in the current Filey Bay range and one cask sample, and started with their flagship product, called, not surprisingly, Filey Bay Flagship, which currently sells at £54.99. The first thing to say, and you’ll have noticed already, is the price; obviously considerably more than the discount supermarket bargains. But it does reflect both the quality and the limited quantities currently being produced. When new releases are made it tends to fly off the shelves. Matured it bourbon casks, it is creamy, light and fruity, with notes of citrus, honey and vanilla. This is a whisky to sip and savour. Others we tasted were Filey Bay Moscatel Finish, which is the distillery’s first-ever sherry-finished release (finished in Moscatel barrels after maturing in bourbon casks) and reflects the naturally sweet character of the sherry grapes along with some floral aromas and citrus elements. It leaves a lovely warming glow. This release sells at £59.99 a bottle. Next up, and at the same price, was the STR Finish. Again, after maturing in bourbon casks it was “finished” in STR red wine barrels from the Rioja region of Spain. STR refers to Shaving, Toasting and Re-charring the casks which gives the resultant whisky a very special flavour - a sweet and oaky spiciness; even a hint of chocolate orange! The current trend in whisky sales generally is towards “peated” varieties - you either love them or hate them (I love them) - and the Filey Bay Peated Finish (£59.99) is a good place to start for someone trying peat whiskies for the first time - it’s lovely and light with a gentle twist of smoke rather than
a “smack you in the face” style of some I could mention. This will be a limited release each year - 3,500 bottles were produced for the first batch and I guess will be hard to find by now. All the four whiskies mentioned so far were distilled and bottled with 46 per cent alcohol by volume. By law, Scotch whisky must be bottled at a minimum of 40 per cent but increasingly, if you study the labels, more are being bottled at 46 per cent; particularly if they are not chill filtered (which Filey Bay isn’t). In simple terms, the higher the strength the more intense and concentrated the flavour. Which should have made the Yorkshire Day special release (on August 1) exceptional - bottled at 55 per cent. And it was - probably my favourite on the night. This was an intense, almost fruitcake-tasting, special brew - absolutely gorgeous. Only 1,500 bottles were produced, so once again they will be hard or almost impossible to find. If you are lucky enough you’ll have to pay £84.99. Finally, to give us a taste of a straight-from-the-cask whisky we were given a cask sample at 64.1 per cent. Only four years old and not available to buy, it packed a powerful punch indeed. I first came across Filey Bay at the wonderful Spirit Specialist shop in Howden, but a good way to explore Filey Bay whisky is to take a onehour distillery tour (£15), including three tasters and a free glass to take home. From the shop or online you can also buy a tasting box (£27.50), containing three different Filey Bay whiskies. More details at: www.spirit ofyorkshire.com

Please drink responsibly. For the facts, visit drinkaware.co.uk The Black Shiraz Price: £7.25 (was £8.25)
Where: Co-op When: Now, until September 28 Why: Australian Shiraz has forged an enviable reputation for huge unrestrained flavours. The Black Shiraz is an extreme example with deep colour and aromas of blackberry and plum over toast, vanilla and spice. Full flavoured and intense for those who like a full throttle wine.
La Patrie Cahors Malbec Price: £5.75 (was £7)
Where: Sainsbury’s When: Now, while stocks last Why: From the sun-drenched south-west of France, it’s bursting with blackberry and blackcurrant fruit and would make a perfect partner to all types of roasted meat including beef or lamb..
01482 887236 and we also managed to survive our first ever ladies day which was just fantastic. We’ve hosted some great events in our Stableyard as well, from wedding receptions to christenings. We’ve even started to host a little bit of live music on a Friday night which seems really popular. We’re definitely going to look to utilise this space with further events.
We obviously share their frustrations regarding the delay in getting our food offering up and running but we’ve still had plenty to keep us busy in the meantime, that is for sure. We’ve had some really great and busy race days
Renovations to our Function room and accommodation are still continuing and we hope to have the Function Room up and running in a few weeks time. It will certainly be an exciting month coming up as we look to get our food finally up and running as well as the finishing touches to our Function Room. We’re looking to utilise the Function Room for a wide range of events from weddings to business conferences and we will also be hosting Yogo & Salsa classes early in the week having recruited a trained fitness instructor to the team at the Rose & Crown. There will be a lot more information regarding food, the Function Room and accommodation shared via our social media pages and website so watch this space. Exciting times ahead and we’re only just getting started. John Atkinson, Manager

Yoga & Stretch
We’ve been open for just short of four months now and it’s been brilliant so far. We’ve had a really great reception from the local residents of Beverley who all just seem so happy to have their local pub back open again after years of watching it frustratingly closing. They’ve all been delighted to see the renovations that have taken place and we’ve had some great feedback regarding the decor and especially the Stableyard.

Dishes that require just chopping a few vegetables and adding a few other ingredients, then a half-hour unattended in the oven are perfect. The deep savoury-sweet combination of miso with a sriracha kick really works a treat here – just add some steamed rice to make it a main dish. . How to curb cravings
Why do we crave chocolate and potato crisps, but never salad? What makes these highly processed foods so irresistible? The answer is they are all rich in fat and sugar or salt, and low in fibre. They also have a high glycaemic load, meaning they are rapidly absorbed into the blood stream and create high spikes in blood sugar, which is linked to ‘addictive-like’ eating, according to researchers. Put simply, these foods leave our tastebuds longing for more, and override our innate ‘I’ve had
Method: Step 1 Preheat the oven to 200°C Fan/220°C/Gas Mark 7. Step 2 Toss the aubergine and mushrooms with the olive oil in a mixing bowl, spread over the base of a roasting tray and roast for 20 minutes. Step 3 While the aubergine and mushrooms are roasting, in another mixing bowl mix together all of the glaze ingredients and set aside. Step 4 Once the aubergine and enough’ signals. To help curb cravings, be aware of what’s happening and know that you can override the feeling. Before you indulge your craving, ask yourself whether you are truly

mushrooms have had 20 minutes in the oven, remove from the oven, pour over the glaze, then mix together to coat the vegetables thoroughly in the sauce. Return to the oven for a further 15 minutes. Step 5 When there is 5 minutes of cooking time remaining for the hungry or whether the craving is a result of something else - are you actually bored, tired or upset? Sometimes, taking a moment to pause and ask yourself, “Am I really hungry?” is all it takes to stop cravings in their tracks. Another tip is to keep healthy foods within easy reach, such as fresh fruit in the fruit bowl, vegies cut up in the fridge or nuts in a container on your work desk.
Go for grains!
Trying to trim your tum? Eating more whole grains may be the answer. The results of an 18 yearlong American study found that adults in their mid-fifties who ate at

Serve as a side dish or as a main with steamed rice. least three servings of whole grains a day had smaller increases in waist size, blood pressure and sugar levels as they aged, compared to those who had lower intakes. Since increased waist size is one of the risk factors for heart disease, you’ll also be protecting your ticker when you choose wholemeal breads and pastas, and wholegrain breakfast cereals over more refined grain options. Fact or fiction? Wearing goggles prevents tears when chopping onions. When they’re cut open, onions release an irritating chemical that makes your eyes water. While it may look a little silly in the kitchen, donning a pair of goggles does work! l In the UK, the average person consumes roughly 9kg of onions a year, according to Chris Wilkinson, chairman of the British Onions Association.

Thai Fish Soup
300g of white fish, cut into chunks e.g. cod, seabass, haddock, pollock A small bunch fresh coriander, chopped A small bunch Thai basil, torn
This wholesome Thai fish soup is packed full of exciting and vibrant flavours. The soup’s base, made from lemongrass, ginger and chilli, creates a hot and sour taste that is deliciously warming, while the coconut milk provides a comforting richness...
Method: 1. Combine all the sauce ingredients with 4 tbsp of water into a blender and blitz until they become a smooth paste. 2. Put a large deep pan onto a medium heat and add the sauce mix, red peppers and chilli. Cook for a few minutes until the peppers and chilli soften. 3. Once softened, add the coconut milk and simmer for 8 minutes. 4. Meanwhile, toast the peanuts in a dry pan on a medium heat until they take on some colour, being careful not to burn them, then take off the heat.
SERVES: 4 TIME: 25 Minutes Ingredients: For the sauce: 2 tbsp of vegetable oil 2 lemongrass stalks, bashed, roughly chopped and outer leaves removed Juice of 2 limes 3 garlic cloves
5cm piece of ginger, peeled and roughly chopped 2 tbsp of fish sauce 4 tbsp of red Thai curry paste 1 bunch of fresh coriander For the soup: 1 red pepper, thinly sliced
Hearty greens! Fact or fiction? Heart disease is the leading cause of deaths worldwide, but eating just one cup of raw leafy greens or beetroot every day could be the key to protecting your ticker. A study of data from more than 50,000 participants over a 23-year period found those who regularly ate higher quantities of vegetables rich in nitrates (spinach, cabbage, kale, rocket and beetroot) had lower blood pressure than people who didn’t, and were less likely to be diagnosed with heart disease later on. If you’re not keen on salads, another way to incorporate leafy greens into your diet is by blending them into fruit smoothies. Your heart will love you for it! European Journal of Epidemiology
Does broccoli really provide as much protein as steak?
Broccoli is packed with nutrient but you’d have to eat a huge amount of this veg (500g or about 6 cups!) to get the same amount of protein as you would from a 70g steak.
SMOOTH OPERATOR Grating your own cheese is more cost-effective than buying pre-grated packets from the supermarket, but many home cooks are put off by the bits of cheese that get stuck in the box grater. An
1 red chilli, finely diced 1 x 400ml can of reduced-fat coconut milk A handful of unsalted peanuts 150g of fresh rice or egg noodles 200g of broccoli, sliced into bite sized pieces easy way to stop this is to spritz your box grater with cooking oil spray. This prevents the cheese from sticking, ensuring easy prep and clean up afterwards.
PIZZA FACTS
l The ham and pineapple topping on Hawaiian pizza did not originate from its tropical island namesake. It was actually
invented by Greek-Canadians, Sam Panopoulos and his two brothers, who emigrated to chilly Canada in 1954. l 49% of people in the UK eat pizza at least once a week and Oxford is the city which consumes the most pizza.
5. Next, add the noodles, broccoli and fish to the coconut milk broth and simmer for 3 minutes so they are soft and cooked through. 6. Divide between 4 bowls and garnish with the chopped coriander, Thai basil and toasted peanuts.
Safeguarding the future
Just found out you’re pregnant? Congrats! How well you eat now could affect your child’s future health, with scientists linking low-quality maternal diets to increased risks of obesity in late childhood. Obesity in childhood often carries into adulthood, and is also associated with an increased risk of chronic diseases. To ensure your unborn baby gets off to a good start in life, enjoy plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables, and cut back on refined carbohydrates, saturated fats and processed meats.. BMC Medicine

Talk to your children about sex – early and often Lockdown has not stopped our kids’ growth nor their intrigue
Prioritising our sexual health is a valuable part of our overall health and wellness. When we’re adults, the hope is we are educated and informed enough to make decisions which will encourage safe sex and positive intimate relationships. Sex has always been a bit of a minefield for the best of us, but what about when you are young, unprepared and very eager? Our teenagers have grown in ways we may not be aware of, considering the past 18 months have seen untold restrictions placed on their education, hobbies and social lives. This does not mean they are not in the know about certain issues. And we, as parents, may not be aware of their expansive knowledge when it comes to sex, what they are doing, who with, or what they are eager to do. The doors are finally opening for them, and they are adamant they will explore. It’s highly unlikely they will tell us this in so many words, so it’s important we recognise lockdown has not stopped their growing, their intrigue, or the fact they may not be as fully prepared as they think they are. Opening a safe space for our young adults to express their concerns and to get practical advice about their sexual health means parenting a
little differently from what we may be comfortable with. Sarah Sproule, occupational therapist, sex educator and podcaster, works with families to support conversations around sexuality and consent. She helps parents navigate these intimate conversations by tackling not only our children’s questions but our uncomfortable tendencies in being open with our children about the wonderful world of sex and how to stay safe. We can’t, after all, do it for them.
When our kids are teens, it isn’t the time to preach and give advice Pre-teens and teenagers are not necessarily open to the idea of listening to us talk about the birds and the bees, but thankfully the way we can have this conversation is changing with a more openminded, free and honest discussion. “When our kids are teens, it isn’t the time to preach and give advice,” says Sproule. “Instead, it’s more about creating a culture of listening and support and acknowledging that life is complex and hard work, particularly when navigating how to start intimate relationships and maybe sharing our body with another person. Learn more “You can make sure your family bookshelves are full of books that could be useful for your teen, books about puberty, sex, communication. You can include
books that normalise nakedness – art and photography books for example. And if you do nothing else, get yourself a copy of Breaking the Hush Factor by Dr Karen Rayne. It’s got all the advice you need for talking to teens about sex.” The conversation is no longer a one-time chat perched at the end of the bed right before our 14-yearold walks out the door on their first date. But the running conversation will most certainly shift as our children get older. “By the time our kids are teenagers, they’ll demand we take a more hands-off approach in our parenting,” says Sproule. “You might have heard that when kids are small, a parent acts as a manager of their life. When kids grow into teenagers, we are forced to take a more consultative role. We have far less influence in all areas. The same thing applies about sex. That’s why sex educators say it’s important to have conversations with our kids about sex early and often, to keep talking as they are growing up.” “When we are really serious about encouraging our teenagers to be proactive about their sexual health,” says Sproule, “we can put resources and equipment like condoms and other barrier methods around our home environment. You can print off information leaflets about different sexually transmitted infections and use magnets to put them on the fridge. You can have a collection of condoms, of various different sizes in the medicine cabinet.” Part of parenting teens is standing close by, ready to pick up the pieces as they go out into the world and learn The conversation about our sexual health is not limited and by showing our children we are also still learning, educating and informing ourselves, we highlight that this is not a linear conversation but rather a very involved, emotional and physical journey.

“You could leave your headphones out while you listen to podcasts or YouTube videos about mental health and sexual orientation,” suggests Sproule whose mini podcast series, Sitting in a Car, explores the questions our children ask and helps us find the answers. “Do that while cooking the dinner so that if your teenager comes into the room, they completely and utterly understand that you are onboard with all this sort of stuff. You are modelling that you understand that sexuality is part of being human and you’re showing up as a supporter to help them look after their sexual health.” Throughout the pandemic our children have been online more, meaning their understanding of consent and safe sex may not be in line with the reality of life. The conversation around making good choices and understanding consent needs to begin much earlier than we realise. “Throughout the whole of our kids’ lives but even more importantly when they are teenagers, we can model what consent looks like, sounds like and feels like,” says Sproule. “We do that in the way we treat our kids consensually in everyday life and the way we treat ourselves. That is the most powerful way to teach consent to our growing young people. It’s not about trotting out sayings like ‘no means no’ or using overly simplistic advice about keeping themselves safe. “Instead, we can acknowledge openly in front of our kids that the world is complex, and we learn consent with practice. It takes vulnerability and courage to discover what we need, speak up for ourselves and learn to respect the differences in other people. We can help our kids work out those things in the safety of their family home. Part of parenting teens is standing close by, ready to pick up the pieces as they go out into the world and learn.”

The New Toyota Yaris Cross
Toyota has further increased its range of Yaris models by introducing a small SUV version, the Toyota Yaris Cross. Roy Woodcock investigates further . . . . . . In just over 20 years on our roads the Yaris has become Toyota’s most important model in Europe, steadily increasing both its sales volume and its market share. Following its launch in 1999 it became the first car from the Japanese brand to claim the European Car of the Year crown, with the second generation model becoming the first vehicle in its class to gain a top five-star rating in Euro NCAP’s safety testing programme. The third generation introduced hybrid-electric power to the small car market for the first time and in 2019 the Yaris shifted 224,000 units across the continent, making it Toyota’s best-seller. Expectations were high, therefore, when the fourth generation car went on sale late last year and were immediately proved right - the car scooping the European Car of the Year award yet again. It was the first to be built on a new global platform that underpins a planned series of new models. And it’s one of those we look at here; the Yaris Cross, an allp-new small SUV. With prices starting from £22,515, there’s a choice of trim levels called Icon, Design, Excel, Dynamic and a limited-run Premiere Edition which will be on sale for about a year.
There is also the option to upgrade to intelligent all-wheel drive on the high-end models for £2,360 extra. At the heart of the car, which is built in France specifically for European customers, is a 1.5-litre, three-cylinder hybrid engine, which together with the electric motors, delivers 114bhp with 120Nm of torque. The vehicle can complete the 0-62mph sprint in 11.2 seconds (11.8 seconds on AWD-i versions) and maxes out at 106mph. Running costs are impressive with models delivering up to 56.5mpg and from 112g/km carbon emissions on a combined run. Compared to the standard Yaris city car, the Yaris Cross is 95mm taller, 20mm wider and 240mm longer with the same wheelbase. Customers can choose from 16, 17 or 18-inch wheels depending on trim level and all models are generously equipped with tech, along with excellent safety levels. We tried the Yaris Cross Dynamic front-wheel drive model costing £26,465 – this price was bumped up a further £450 as there was a JBL premium sound system added to the mix. When viewed from any angle, the Yaris Cross boasts quite aggressive SUV styling with twin front grilles, a black roof, chunky wheel arches, along with slim headlights and circular fog lamps at the bottom of the grille. There are black wheels and door pillars, along with privacy glass and smart LED lights at the back with sequential turn indicators. Moving inside, the Yaris Cross is very big on space with smart cloth
upholstery and a clutter-free, yet feature rich cockpit. The car sees the debut of the new Smart Connect Multimedia system with faster operation and additional functionality. There is the Touch 2 multimedia system with a nineinch high-definition touchscreen, sat nav, DAB radio and wireless smartphone connectivity via Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. It has a separate panel for the climate control and seat heaters, plus a neat screen behind the steering wheel that offers all manner of information about hybrid driving performance, speed and fuel levels etc. The driver benefits from excellent all round visibility and the acceleration from the CVT gearbox is smooth and responsive with plenty of power on tap at all times. The car cruises at 70mph on motorways and is nice and agile in town centres where a new upgraded parking system makes light work of squeezing into tight spaces – even at night. Out on the country lanes, the Yaris Cross offers confident grip through
bends and the cabin is nicely refined with very little wind or road surface noise filtering through. The driver can switch through drive modes called Normal, Eco and Power that alter the responses of the vehicle and there is an EVonly mode which is ideal when travelling through Congestion Charge zones. Extra energy is recouped through regenerative braking and this is sharper if the car is switched from D for Drive to B mode whereby the vehicle brakes as soon as you lift your foot off the accelerator. Comfort levels are really good and there is enough room for a couple of passengers in the back provided the front seats are not pushed back too far. Add a third and it gets a little too cosy. The boot can accommodate 397 litres of kit - a limit that increases to 1,097 litres with the 60:40 or 40:20:40 split-folding rear seats dropped flat. And there are a number of handy storage options scattered throughout the cabin too. Although the Yaris Cross has yet to be tested for its Euro NCAP safety rating, the Yaris was awarded the

maximum five stars and this latest version is packed with safety features. It has all the secondgeneration Safety Sense features as standard across the entire range such as pre-collision system, lane trace assist, full-range intelligent adaptive cruise control, road sign assist and automatic high beam. Blind spot monitoring and rear cross traffic alert are options on the high-end models. Toyota predicts the Design trim level will account for about 50 per cent of sales and, despite initially
believing only three per cent of buyers would opt for AWD-i, initial pre-sales figures show that number to be nearer to 10-15 per cent. All in all, Toyota has taken the compact SUV qualities from the RAV4 - which is now celebrating its 25th anniversary - and added lots of Yaris city car DNA to the mix to develop the all-new Yaris Cross making it big on style, appeal and performance. East Yorkshire Business Expo - 6th October 2021
The East Yorkshire Business Expo returns to the Conference Centre at the Mercure Grange Park Hotel, Willerby, East Yorkshire, on Wednesday 6th October from 10am till 4pm. The event will once again see businesses from across the local
area, showcasing their products and services to their fellow exhibitors and visitors alike. The past eighteen months have been difficult for many businesses from dealing with lockdown, furlough, staff working from home, diversification and sadly staff cutbacks, so this year’s Expo will be a great opportunity for the local business community to come together and finally network face to face.
In order to keep everyone attending safe, we have partnered with Evoke Technologies Ltd (a Hull based audio-visual company), who during the past eighteen months diversified into offer sanitising solutions to schools and businesses and who will be supplying entry screens, sanitisers and room fogging for the event. Extra space between stands and increased ventilation, will ensure your visit to the Expo is not only a pleasant one, but also a safe one! If you are looking to get back to doing face to face networking, the Federation of Small Businesses will be running two FREE ‘Speed Networking Sessions’ (one in the morning and another in the afternoon), so please do come along and join in. There will also be a series of guest speakers throughout the day, including ‘Selling is a Skill’ by Austen Hempstead. Austen (pictured right) works in all kinds of ways with all kinds of companies; from business owners who need to develop their own sales skills, to running workshops for sales teams at FTSE 100 listed companies and at much smaller; but just as much fun, SME’s.

Tips for Maximising a Business Expo A business expo provides an excellent networking opportunity, along with opportunities for learning. You’ll meet new clients, as well as fellow businesspeople with whom you could form strategic alliances. You may even find a mentor, or non-competing business owners you can learn from. However, business expos quickly grow overwhelming if you don’t prepare a list of objectives. You can’t do everything or meet everyone, so focus on what’s most central to you and your business. Talk to People You Don’t Know
You might feel drawn to talk to people you’ve met before and
reconnecting with them may prove beneficial if you haven’t spoken in some time. However, focus on talking to people you’ve never met. Read the program beforehand to determine where you might find these people, so you walk in with a plan.
Keep Memory Aids
When you sort through the pile of business cards you’ve collected after the show, you won’t clearly remember many of the people you met. To jog your memory, jot down notes about each person on the card when you receive it. Note whether the person is a strong business prospect. Writing a note on the card also shows you’re truly interested in the person who gave it to you. Also make sure you have a good supply of your own cards with you!
Attend Workshops and Seminars
If you’re not tied to a booth all day, or have knowledgeable staff to stay with the booth, attend the workshops and seminars that are
corporate identity throughout your display. Display literature such as brochures and catalogues prominently. Invite people and clients to your stand and to the Expo itself - as they too would benefit. If every business exhibiting brings alon 30 or more guests it increases the footfall for all the businesses involved. most relevant to you. Also attend the ones your potential clients may attend. By attending a workshop you’re already an expert in, you can show your expertise. Ask questions and offer insights, noting your experience in brief so you don’t sound like you’re bragging. As the expo ends, mingle with people exiting the doors or are waiting to talk to the presenters. Talk with the presenters if you feel the relationship would benefit you. Better yet, ask the Expo organiser if you can participate on a panel during the next years event.
Create an Unusual Display
If you are exhibiting, distinguish your stand from the crowd with a bold, eye-catching element such as illuminated signage, an eyecatching display or a giant info-graphic. Create a cohesive look by using a colour scheme focusing on one or two colours from your
Offer Giveaways
If you’re exhibiting at the expo, offer product giveaways to get people talking about your company. An inexpensive yet eye-catching promotional product such as a canvas tote bag serves this purpose well. Products that people will actually use work best. Alternatively, hold a raffle, giving away a prize that appeals to a broad audience.
Schedule Follow-Up Dates
When you meet people you wish to talk with further, plan to have lunch or coffee. Set a date, if you can do so without being too pushy. Otherwise, plan to discuss when to meet via phone or email. 30% of business expo participants don’t follow up with their connections, which works in your favour - if other businesses don’t call your prospective clients, then they’re free to have lunch with you!

Beauty Masterclass: The Reverse Cat Eye The cat eye is back, but this time it’s had an update. Beauty pioneers are now wearing it in reverse – with a softer finish and smaller flicks that enhance and elongate the shape of the eyes. To find out how to replicate this cool new look, we went to the pros for their tips and product recommendations…
under your lower eyelid,” explains Peter Philips, the creative and image director for Dior Makeup who created the look at the Dior Haute Couture AW21-22 show. “Take that line all the way to the inner and outer corners of your eye. Then, using a flat brush, apply a line of eyeshadow directly over top – I used the navy, midnight blue from Dior’s 5 Couleur Couture 279 Denim Palette. To soften things up and create a more smudged, livedin effect, blend that eyeshadow gently with a brush before finishing up with layers of mascara.”
Use A Flat Brush
“Before you do anything, I recommend sweeping on your bronzer, or a brown eyeshadow, all over your eyelids,” says pro-makeup artist Karlie Padget. “This will not only give you some warmth, it will help to balance out the finished look and keep harshness at bay from the jet-black – or navy – eyeliner you use.”
“One of my key tips for replicating this look is to use a flat brush and physically rub it against your eyeliner,” says Karlie. “This will pick up the pigment, but softly, so that when you apply your brush to your eye area, you get a softer finish that’s not too harsh, and much more smudged. Make sure you use the brush to run your pencil all the way along the bottom lash line and right into the inner corners.”
Grab Your Liner
Give Tight Lining A Go
Begin With Bronze Tones
“You want to start the reverse cat eye by applying black eyeliner
“To intensify the look, you’ll want to do a bit of tight lining too” advises television make-up artist Lisa Potter. “Take your liner and run it along the upper inner lash line, then run it along the lower one, focusing on the innermost section for extra depth. This will add extra definition to the eye and further enhancement. While the ‘cat eye’ trend doesn’t necessarily open your eyes up, it does work to elongate them and give them an almond effect, which is apparently the most desirable eye shape.”
Don’t Fuss Over Precision
“Though it looks neat, you really don’t need to focus on precision for this look,” says Karlie. “It’s all about a smokey effect, and for that, the more imprecise the better. You just have to remember to blend and smoke everything out as much as possible. That’s why I say a brush is essential – because the fluffy fibres can give a soft-focus finish
September 2021

and do the majority of the work for you. Likewise, don’t feel you have to use gel or pencil liners. In fact, I recommend a soft eyeshadow to create the wings on the inner and outer corners. It’s a much more forgiving – not to mention fixable – texture if you make a mistake. Use it to create a small wing, following on from your bottom lash line on the outer and inner corner of your eyes.”
Apply Base Make-Up Last
“With a look like this, you’ll want to apply any base make-up – including concealer – as your last step,” says Lisa. “This is because you can actually use your foundation to help sharpen up your lines and
enhance the smokiness overall. Use your fingers or a brush to neaten everything up with your base and remove any mistakes – as well as product fallout – that may have slipped down your face throughout the process.”
Keep The Rest Of Your Look Simple
“Keep the rest of your make-up simple when you create an eye like this,” says Karlie. “Try pairing the look with a nude or neutral-toned lip and bronzed cheeks. Focusing on one element of the face will keep your make-up from looking too theatrical. For instance, if you’re focusing on the eyes, always keep your lips soft and vice versa.”

Hull City - with Woody Mellor
Early days
Hull City are still acclimatising to the Championship. There was the fantastic yet unexpected 4-1 victory at Preston to start of the season, the 3-0 home defeat to QPR, the disappointing 1-0 home defeat at home to crisis club Derby, 2-0 defeat at title favourites Fulham and the 0-0 draw with Bournemouth who are another promotion contender. Realistically you could not expect many points from these fixtures as three of the teams are likely to be challenging at the top end of the league and Hull City are likely to be within the bottom six to eight teams this season. The September fixtures do look slightly better though this includes a home game against win-less Sheffield United though they do possess their Premier League squad. To be honest all games will be a struggle until this squad find their feet as most opponents have players with years of experience of either the Championship or Premier League and the vast majority of City’s team have only really known the lower divisions at previous clubs, on loan from their Premier League teams or at Hull City last year. They have to quickly find their feet, it’s another level to reach for the likes of Jacob Greaves and Keane Lewis-Potter and is it possible for players such as Randell Williams who has moved up two divisions from Exeter City to reach this standard consistently. Only time will tell. City have youthful exuberance and great team spirit but will we have the quality at either end of the pitch. The QPR was a taste of what they are facing, they failed to make the most of a number of opportunities and then conceded goals from slack marking or mistakes. Hopefully they will learn from this. Many sides last year lacked the quality to take advantage of our defensive
errors whilst opponents struggled against the quality of Wilks and KLP, more seasoned and higher quality defenders are more likely to keep them at bay. The lack of experience was highlighted against Derby. Derby have also lacked players and were desperate to sign up free agents prior to this fixture but the difference between the clubs is the quality and wages being paid. They may have been signing players in their twilight years, for one last pay day but they had sufficient quality and nous to cope with City’s attacks. Hoofing the ball into the box for Magennis didn’t work when he was up against Curtis Davies and Phil Jagielka who have had 500+ Premier League games between them. Better teams than City may take them to the cleaners but experience helps. Maybe this is one of the main reasons for Tom Huddlestone’s permanent signing. He may just come on as substitute for some games but he has the experience to help steady the ship and bring some added composure to the team. It was surprising that City did not look for
an experienced central defender during transfer deadline week however. Someone like Curtis Davies, who had been giving severe hints, may have been useful though Di’shon Bernard (pictured above) on loan from Manchester United has done well over the past couple of games. Maybe they have faith with him Jones and Greaves or there is insufficient money in the budget for someone better. They did however manage to botch the summer long signing of Reagan Slater, either City or Sheffield United moved the goalposts on deadline evening despite a fee and contract being agreed back in May, pre-transfer embargo and new Sheffield United manager. City can only offer a loan till the embargo is over but something went wrong in the negotiations and it doesn’t look like that player will be coming here in the future especially as his father claimed he had rejected three other clubs in order to rejoin City.
to the team. Maybe they could struggle like in the relegation year but hopefully they can return to the Championship far better players after their successful season in Division 1. Wilks has attracted the attention of Borrussia Monchengladbach allegedly? That’s not something you usually associate with Hull City players, though they must have faded as I haven’t heard that club mentioned for years. Hopefully their return will boost City’s attack as it is not going to easy to score at this level. They may score against the weaker sides but could struggle against quality. It probably shows how far City have fallen in the past five years as it almost the same situation as when Hull City first reached the Premier League. Avoiding relegation is the main aim and staying in business post Covid is just as important like everyone else. Championship clubs are deep in debt and struggling to pay their wages so long term the development of young players could be the way forward to both survive and rebuild but at the moment it is scraping the points to survive particularly in the minileague of teams in the bottom end of the division. Let’s hope by October there are more points added to the total and we actually see a goal scored at the MKM Stadium.
By mid-September it is hoped that players will be back after suspensions and injuries and key players such as Malik Wilks and George Honeyman can be added

Gardening
September gardening
l Perennials: Euphorbia ceratocarpa,
September is a busy time in the garden. Things can quickly change from summer to the onset of winter, so if you are organised you can really get on top of jobs now to save time and work next spring and to prevent having to work in colder, harsher conditions.
salvias, heleniums, phlox, echinacea, rudbeckias l Shrubs and trees: hydrangeas, Viburnum opulus, berries and leaves. l Pick a large bunch of lateflowering phlox, such as the pure white ‘Mount Fuji’. It thrives in sun and shade. l Pick hydrangeas before they are damaged by wind and rain. l Pick a last bunch of roses before they brown.
The Cutting Garden
Perennials, Shrubs & Trees
l Inside, have a go at forcing some
Sowing & growing l Plant out and transplant biennials. l Divide and replant perennials to
ease any congested areas. Later in the month bring tender perennials, such as pelargoniums, inside to protect from the frosts. l Continue sowing hardy annuals for early flowering next year – you’ll get bigger, better plants which can flower a good six weeks earlier than those spring sown. For example, briza, bupleurum, calendula, centaurea, Papaver rhoeas, Papaver somniferum, and scabious can all be direct sown now. l Clear your annuals as they go over and add them to the compost heap. l Sow a pack of Viola ‘Heartsease’ to flower in about eight weeks’ time, right through winter. l It’s urgent to get wallflowers in place now. These spring-flowering biennials need to get their roots down well before flowering. l Sow yellow rattle. This is key to the success of any wild flower patch as it reduces the vigour of certain grasses.
Bulbs & tubers l Now is a good time to start
planting your spring bulbs – the ground will still be nice and warm from the summer months, and it gives plenty of time for the new roots to bed in before the spring sunshine arrives.
hyacinths or amaryllis now for colour over the festive season. l Plant pots of smaller bulbs such as muscari, iris, crocus, chionodoxa, scilla and anemones. Keep watered during the winter if we have any dry spells (but lift off the ground to prevent waterlogging which is just as bad) to provide pots full of colour for the spring. l Plant small bulbs in to your lawn. Think of jazzing up an area of lawn or rough grass with crocuses such as C. tommasinianus, C. vernus and C. chrysanthus hybrids. All are happy in thick turf with the sun fully on them.
Pruning & tidying l Keep deadheading and weeding. l Collect seed from perennials and
annuals and store them somewhere cool and dry. l Deadhead dahlias. l Pinch out the tips of wallflowers to promote bushier growth. l Early chrysanths are a must in the garden, and will give you a decent few weeks of bloom before the worst of the autumn weather. l Prune climbing/rambling roses once they’ve finished flowering.
Planting l Later in the month plant spring
bedding such as wallflowers, primulas and violas for a colourful spring display.
Harvesting
Lovely things to pick and arrange from your garden in September: l Bulbs: gladioli and acidanthera l Hardy annuals: Euphorbia oblongata, sunflowers and scabious l Half-hardy annuals and dahlias: all
l Start planting new perennials as well as trees/shrubs/climbers.
l Plant pot grown new trees whilst the soil is still warm and moist.
The Kitchen Garden
Vegetables l When you think you’ve harvested
your last potatoes, carefully dig over the veg bed, collect those that were still lurking under the surface, and then dig over ready to plant some green manures. l Bean and pea plants that have finished their harvest can be cut back, leaving the roots to be dug in to the soil to provide extra nitrogen for future crops. l Continue to feed tomato plants

until all the fruits have finished growing and ripening. l Sow spring onions – these will be ready to eat before the frosts get going in most parts of the country. l Remove any crops that have finished leaving unneeded areas clear – weeding and tidying for the winter. l Sow Swiss chard, winter spinach, broad beans and hardy peas. l Keep watering winter squash and pumpkins if the weather is hot. This will prevent their growth from being checked. l Prepare a bed for autumn-planted shallots. Incorporate well-rotted compost into the area to improve fertility. If your ground is wet, a raised bed may be a better option. Plant the sets from the end of the month, with the tip just protruding from the soil. l Do a last outside sowing of radish. With the soil still warm and moist with dew, you should be eating these in four to five weeks.
Salad & Herbs l Direct sow a row of rocket. It seems late to still be sowing seed, but salad rocket does not bat an eyelid at the cold or wet. l Sow all your autumn-winter picking salad leaves and herbs if not done in August. l Cut and hang herbs to dry for using in the kitchen over winter. l Sow coriander now and you may be harvesting until April or May next year. Sow in a row outside, or into a gutterpipe for planting out in a month’s time. l Long-season herbs, such as chives, lovage and sorrel, should all be cut to the ground. They will be up again in a couple of weeks with fresh leaves. Drench with slow-release, potash-rich liquid comfrey fertiliser to encourage strong regrowth. l If weather is dry, water well. Pot up less hardy herbs such as parsley, chives and French tarragon and bring inside into a sunny, frost free spot.

FIONA’S FOOD FOR THOUGHT
By Fiona Dwyer - Journalist, PR Consultant, DIY Your Biz PR Course Creator, Wife & Mum to two teenagers! BACK TO SCHOOL
Is it already September? The weeks and months are flying by. Let us hope this academic year we see more of a return to normal. The children have been amazing over the last 18 months through such difficult times and I really hope there will be less disruption for them. I’m sure schools will be working hard to do what they can to help. Only time will tell, I suppose, how the year will progress, but I want to wish all pupils, sixth formers and university students a better year! Good luck!
RE-WATCHING CLASSIC FILMS
I have just re-watched Titanic which I haven’t seen for years. It’s a classic but it’s one of those films I normally avoid because it makes me sob. However, my teenage daughter hadn’t seen it before so we watched it together. She loved it - and yes, of course, we cried – a lot! But you know, that’s OK. A good sob-fest is quite cathartic. Did you also know that there’s such a thing as Film Therapy? And not just to shed cathartic tears! Watching films lets you disconnect for a bit, relax and enjoy yourself and it can help reduce anxiety because you’re focusing on an activity. It can also help you face your fears or work through a problem. Films create laughter and happiness, improving mental health. There are all sorts of benefits, which is a bonus for me, because it’s one of my favourite things to do.
GENUINE QUESTION!
At the time of writing, I have a fly buzzing around the window next to my desk. My question is: why can flies always find their way into a room through a little opening in the window, but can’t seem to find their way out again? Have a super September everyone! Stay safe!
