Local News Now children at the primary school can enjoy delicious meals, cooked on site, like roast chicken, vegetable pie and jam roly-poly. Jill Wood, Business Manager at St Nicholas and Sidmouth Primary Schools, said: “Since St Nicholas Primary School got its micro kitchen the children have loved staying for a school meal.

Master chefs! Every Hull school now has its own kitchen School menus across Hull are getting tastier and more creative now that every primary and secondary school in Hull has its own kitchen.

Schools without kitchens used to have meals cooked in one of six transport kitchens with the food transported to them in thermal containers ready to be served. From 2012 Hull City Council has been improving kitchens in schools through the School Capital Programme. The programme, along with a government initiative to install and refurbish kitchens in schools in readiness for the Universal Infant Free School Meals (UIFSM) policy, has ensured that every school in the city now has its own kitchen.

Sue Walker, Business Director at Hall Road Academy, said: “Since our school has had a kitchen refurbishment it has made a huge difference to the numbers of children who stay for a hot healthy school lunch.

“We worked with Hull City Council Asset Management and the Catering Team to get the new kitchen we wanted and the whole venture has been a major success.” Some schools, like St Nicholas Primary School, have had micro

“We now get wonderful smells around school of fresh cooking. “The cooks can also adapt the menu to the needs and preferences of the children. The presentation has vastly improved too.” Catering staff at St Nicholas cook approximately 155 meals on site every day.

Councillor Phil Webster, Portfolio Holder for Learning, Skills, and Safeguarding Children, said: “There are significant benefits to a child’s education if it is accompanied by a nutritious diet. “We should be proud as both a city and a council that all our schools now have the facilities to cook tasty, healthy and nutritious meals on site.” There are many reasons why schools having their own kitchen is so essential. Studies have shown that hunger affects concentration, and that well-nourished children do better at school.

“Menus can also be more flexible, especially if we have a theme day we want to promote. The children like the fact that they have more choice in what they eat. “The quality of the food has improved and for 50p a meal it is exceptionally good value.

kitchens installed. Micro kitchens are smaller versions of traditional kitchens, designed to meet the needs of the smaller dining units. Before St Nicholas got its new cooking space, meals were cooked elsewhere and transported to the school.

Nationally, over a third of teachers have seen the funding of free school dinners for Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 children have a direct impact on improved concentration and attainment levels. Since September 2014, all children in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 in state-funded schools in England have been eligible for a cooked school lunch at no cost to parents.

No kitchen sink drama: top tips and tricks to help make your kitchen renovation run smoothly Planning a kitchen renovation this year? Here’s everything you need to know before you start. As open plan living becomes ever more popular, a combined kitchen/dining/ living room, often called the ‘family room’, has become the heart of the home, for everything from stand-up breakfasts to more formal entertaining.

It’s no surprise then that when people buy a new house, one of the first projects they tackle is often a kitchen overhaul. According to the very latest 2018 Kitchen Trends report, 40 per cent of kitchen renovations were started after a new house purchase. And with an average spend of £10,300, rising to £11,700 for rooms of 100sq ft or above, it’s essential the work is done to a high standard.

To ensure your new house project goes smoothly, Rachael Cummings, BeverleyMag features editor, offers these essential tips.

Humber Wood Recycling Project Ltd: Good with wood The up-cycling and refurbishing trend shows no signs of diminishing anytime soon and with queues forming outside council recycling shops and ‘tip-skimming’ becoming a ‘thing’, ‘makedo-and-mend’ is still firmly on the lifestyle map. All of this is great news for a Hull enterprise that’s breathing new life into precious materials that would otherwise be incinerated or sent to landfill. The awardwinning Humber Wood Recycling Project operates as a social enterprise reducing wood waste and landfill providing training and work opportunities for people considered to be vulnerable or marginalised.

The project is almost entirely self-funding, generating income chiefly by providing a cost-effective alternative for businesses and industries that would normally hire a skip or private disposal services to deal with wood waste. The collected wood is then sorted, graded and prepared for sale at more competitive prices than the DIY superstores. Finally, the on-site

shop sells handcrafted items, such as furniture or garden planters made wholly from the reclaimed wood that has been up-cycled or created into something entirely new by the project team. Volunteers are the lifeblood of the enterprise and arrive from all sorts of backgrounds and with varying degrees of skills and experience - or even none at all! The project provides all the necessary basic training and volunteers move on to learn workshop skills, gain retail experience from the shop and spend time learning and getting to grips with administrative matters and the day-to-day running the whole outfit. And, of course, it is these trained and experienced volunteers who are called on first when the project is in a position to offer a sustainable paid employment opportunity.

Pet Care

Ensuring the safety of your pets this Easter. Easter is just around the corner. Finally, all those bank holidays, some better weather (hopefully) and all the chocolate… It’s important to bear our pets in mind over Easter, since decorations, flowers and foods can be toxic.

Chocolate is very poisonous to dogs. Even small amounts can cause vomiting, diarrhoea, tremors and fits. How poisonous the chocolate is depends on it’s type, with dark the most poisonous and white the least, however, if your pet has eaten any chocolate please call the practice immediately for advice. Hot cross buns or any food that contains sultanas and raisins can cause kidney failure in dogs. Only very small amounts are required to make your pet really poorly, so don’t be tempted to treat them. With Spring approaching often our houses are full of beautiful plants at Easter. It’s important to remember that many plants are poisonous, including daffodils which cause vomiting, diarrhoea and sometime fits in dogs. Lilies are extremely poisonous to cats, causing kidney failure that can be fatal.

Please remember to mention

This includes the stems, leaves, flowers and even pollen, which cats are tempted to lick off their fur if they brush against the flowers. To be safe, don’t have any lilies in a house with cats. If you are worried that your pet has been poisoned, do not attempt to make them sick, but contact the surgery straight away and we will advise you on the best course of action. We wish all our clients and furry friends a Happy and Safe Easter! Natasha Hillary BVMS MRCVS

Roy Woodcock’s

World of Wine There’s so much pretentiousness around wine (and yes, I know, I’m running the risk of being accused of glass houses and stones) but the bottom line has to be if you like a particular wine, be it red, white, pink or any other colour come to that, then it really doesn’t matter how, when and with what it’s drunk. That’s always been my mantra; so a cold glass of Chablis with some blood rare beef? Absolutely fine if that’s what tickles your tastebuds. Having said all of that, I would never discourage anyone from really getting into the subject there is so much to enjoy, apart from the wine! And there are so many ways of finding out more; certainly enough books, magazines and videos to last a lifetime - when I did a search for “learning about wine” on YouTube, for instance, it threw up 956,000 results. Talking and listening to someone who shares your passion is always a good place to start; never

being afraid to ask for advice, for instance. Which is why seeking out a wine merchant is always a good idea - they’re always happy to pass on their advice and knowledge and the chances are you’ll discover a few more interesting wines into the bargain. For instance, there’s a rise in interest in certain eastern European countries right now Croatia, Slovenia and Macedonia - producing some really good wines. But trying to find examples amidst the hundreds of bottles stacked on your local supermarket shelf could be a problem. Wine clubs and dinners are always worth seeking out; the latter generally featuring an “expert” who will guide you through the bottles that have been chosen to accompany certain dishes. It makes for a really enjoyable evening and you’ll almost certainly come away with a deeper understanding of the subject. Locally, there’s a Hull branch of the Yorkshire Guild of Sommeliers who say their simple aim is to “promote the discovery and enjoyment of wine” and who offer a warm welcome to anyone with an interest in the subject, whether that’s a complete beginner or passionate wine enthusiast. The Hull branch generally meets monthly at the Kingston Theatre Hotel, with the April meeting scheduled for the 10th, with guest speaker Andrew Bennett talking

about the iconic wine regions of France. Following that there’s a meeting on May 14 (pairing tapas and wines of Spain) and June 4th, with a guest speaker from Derventino Wines, of Malton. Last month I was delighted to be invited to the first meeting of a Hull restaurant’s newly-formed wine club. Held at 1884 Wine and Tapas on the Marina, it featured six tapas courses, each matched by a wine chosen by one of their suppliers, Yorkshire Vintners, of Ripon. We enjoyed an English white (Bacchus) with a starter of grilled Dover sole, brown shrimps, sea spinach and burnt butter. Now I’m a huge fan of English wine but this one came from a small Suffolk producer (Giffords Hall Vineyard) that was new to me. In simple terms you wouldn’t be far wrong if you described it as an English version of a New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc - it had those wonderful gooseberry and elderflower notes and suited the fish perfectly. Next up we had a French Bordeaux blend, but from New Zealand, that was chosen for a dish of confit chicken thigh and forest mushrooms. The Cabernet Sauvignon-Merlot-Cabernet Franc blend from the Te Mata estate in Hawke’s Bay had hints of aniseed and thyme and was my star of the evening. Wines from South Africa, Argentina and Germany completed the show, with Yorkshire Vintners sales manager Edd Simpson giving us a quick introduction to them before we all tucked in.

He told me: “I am a bit of wine geek and I love everything about it, from the production of wines to the drinking. But it can be intimidating for some people if they think they should know more about what’s happening with wine. “Because of that people often play safe; they’ve had a certain wine, perhaps a Pinot Grigio or a Merlot, and liked it and because of that they stick with it every time, because it’s safe. Equally they may have experienced a poor example of a particular wine, so never try it again. In both cases they are denying themselves an opportunity to taste something really exciting. “I see my job as trying to entertain but hopefully educate a little, bit by bit, and in doing so dispel some of the pretentiousness that exists around wine and give people a little more confidence to branch out.” Edd and Deborah Spicer, Director of 1884 Wine and Tapas Bar, both confirmed that the wine club (there’s no formal membership) will hold tasting events around once every three months, so keep watch on their website (www.1884wineandtapasbar. co.uk) for details. Roberts & Speight, of Beverley, organise occasional wine tastings (www.robertsandspeight.co.uk) as do House of Townend at their Cellar Door headquarters at Melton Business Park (www. houseoftownend.com) As this column went to press there were still tickets available for Townend’s Nyetimber English sparkling wine tasting on April 27th (tickets £35).

Zen and Asian Garden Ideas Create your own area of tranquility with a beautiful Zen inspired garden space. Historically the original Zen Gardens were created by the Buddhist monks as spaces for solitude and meditation that simultaneously represent the human’s admiration for the beauty of nature. The origin of the gardens can be traced back to the late 14th century, and in the beginning, they were small secluded spaces within the monasteries composed mainly of gravel, rocks, and stones arranged in such a manner which closely resembled a natural landscape. The impression of water was achieved through wave-like patterns in the

gravel, and the rocks and stones were representative of mountains and hills. Japanese Rock Gardens or Dry Asian Landscapes often used these methods where water was scarce. This concept was developed and upgraded through the years and new elements – lakes, bridges, lighting and art installations were all introduced. Today a Zen Garden is a collective term for all interpretations on the subjects that explore the inspiration of the Asian aesthetics,

philosophy, and admiration for nature. The essential elements in a traditional Japanese Zen Garden are gravel,

stones and in some cases moss. Such a garden is created to be felt not observed. The presence of living elements is minimal. There were no plants or lush vegetation, no objects created by humans. Through the years under the influence of different interactions between the Asian cultures the Zen gardens have been influenced with plants and items from Japan, China and Korea, which has led to the emergence of a specific Asian style in the art of gardening. Many specific elements exist and are used together, in combinations or singularly to create the the so-called Asian Style Gardens or Zen Gardens. Let’s explore the primary key groups of such elements… Rocks & Stones The rocks and stones compositions are maybe the most important elements used in the Asian art of gardening. They exude power and stability combined with tranquility and timeless sensation. With their rough amorphous structure, they’re often used as a counterpoint to the soft vision of the sand and water elements – a contradiction that incites a deep reflection.

THE LAST WORD Gardening Raked Sand and Pebbles In the stylised landscape composition of the Zen gardens water premises – like seas and rivers – are represented through spaces of waved gravel. A multitude of carefully formed shallow furrows and patterns symbolise the waves and the movement of water which introduces the dynamics of it into the composition. Most commonly used are the crushed white or beige granite which is carefully shaped with specially designed rakes. Precisely those lines and waves of granite and gravel are amongst the most common and characteristic visual elements of Zen garden design. Koi Fish Ponds Water is also an essential component from fountains with troughs, through streams and

to that rule are the Stone Lanterns (also known as Pagoda Lights). They vary in forms and sizes, in detailing and decoration. Created to accommodate

Gardening high and is characteristic of the territories of Japan, China, Korea and East Mongolia. Its leaves have a distinctive pattern with five or seven peaks. The colouring of the trees can vary, but the most desired are the ones that have bright red colours. Moss Gardens Because of its endurance under extremely harsh conditions, the moss often is the only living component of the Japanese Zen gardens. Viewed as a clam and unpretentious plant the moss needs only shadow and moisture to thrive. In the mild and humid Asian climate, the moss is widely spread. Its colours and hues vary in a broad colour range- from deep green to yellowish and can be successfully introduced in water gardens as well in dry arrangements. Arched Chinese Red Bridges The red arched bridges are a unique trademark of the Chinese gardens. They are small in size and traditionally are composed entirely of wood. Their arched high point is usually the highest place in the garden that allows the best view of the surrounding beauty.

Stone Water Basins The Stone water baths originate in Japan where they are traditionally used as a place to wash and clean before initiating a tea ceremony. Called tsukubai – literally “stopping basin” they are composed in such a manner that one must bow to use them. In this way, apart from the trivial purples of cleansing they also provoke certain humility of spirit and attune one with the spiritual aim of the tea ceremony. In today’s garden design the stone water baths bring a more decorative value to the garden’s decor. Stepping Stone Pathways “Don’t leave anything to chance” is an important principle when it comes to Zen garden design. Cautiously selected paths on which one can explore and feel the gardens spirit are one of the essential and key elements in Asian gardening. Arraigning walking paths through the usage of stepping stones is essential for the right configuration of the design. Those pathways can lead through gravel, moss, grass and even water features - inviting you on a step by step journey to discover the beauty and the spiritual secrets of a Zen garden.

Hull City

East Stand Views...

There are a few reasons to feel more optimistic about survival however. The defence is generally a lot tighter than under Slutsky and at long last Adkins team has started to create and score goals. Key to this is the arrival of young Liverpool winger Harry Wilson on loan and the return of Abel Hernandez. Wilson is a breath of fresh air, someone with the ability to create, score and unlike our sulky Polish winger he will run and run for ninety minutes. Wilson is a star of the future, whether at Anfield or elsewhere and hopefully he can help the club gain three of four wins to keep the club in the Championship. Hernandez returned against Millwall and he has the ability to score goals at this level, six goals in something like six games he has played this season. He is almost certainly leaving during the summer but he has the twin aims of a lucrative move to Italy and World Cup place to motivate him for a couple of months. There is slightly more confidence in the team and Jarrod Bowen also appears to have regained his spark too. Looking at the remaining fixtures the team does need to perform better than they did in games such as Birmingham, Barnsley and Milwall as there are some tough games to come. They have failed to match more limited opponents who put emphasis into physicality and hard work so they need to perform in a trip to relegation rivals Burton and lesser extent visit from Sheffield Wednesday. Besides this they have four games against promotion chasers, Villa and Cardiff at home and Wolves and Bristol City away. Similar to last season you can look at all the points that have been dropped during the past ten minutes and the club would have been safe already. Instead of chasing ten points from the final eight games they could have been home and dry.

To Contact

One can hope that there is some substance to rumours of another potential takeover if they survive. No doubt this was first suggested around the time of the transfer window when the club tend to use this excuse for a lack of investment. One can but hope but we would imagine things will be much the same next year whatever division we are in but with no players from the Premier League era or on

The club has apparently agreed to use the name Hull City once again and the results of a survey on concessions will have been received. There may be some concessions in the options suggested but it looks unlikely to please everyone not least just one child can come at a reduced rate with an adult so no real discounts to help bring back young fans. Young fans are the clubs future but just as there has been a lack of foresight regards squad maintenance the club are losing more and more young fans by the year. A few years ago you would see lots of children and teenagers at matches or wandering around town in City shirts but who knows if they still attend matches through the loss of Premier league excitement or they or rather their families being priced out of children’s passes.

The club has a significant gap over the teams below them and thankfully the likes of Sunderland and Birmingham do appear incapable of winning matches, except when they both played Hull City so hopefully by the next column we can look forward to another season in the Championship and dare to dream of rebuilding for a promotion bid. Just avoiding successive relegations is the aim for now.

Words by Woody Mellor

Three days ago most Hull City fans were fairly optimistic that relegation worries were behind us, the defeat at Birmingham has created anxiety but there is some light at the end of the tunnel. The two great victories against Norwich and Ipswich within four days took them nine points clear of the relegation zone and with a vastly superior goal difference this was a ten point gap. True to City’s longstanding history of tripping up when nearing the finishing line they lose 3-0 at St Andrews and boost Birminghams faint chances of survival. The gap is down to six points and better goal difference so we have less certainty than Saturday morning but survival is more likely than a month ago.

Premier League wages. In April we will also see if there have been genuine attempts to heal the breach between owners and fans.

East Stand Views...

Turning Point

Who knows which players will be there next season. The club have indicated that they are to begin contract talks with some players who will be out of contract. Ten players are likely to leave as things stand and it is difficult to see them offering comparable deals to likes of McGregor, Dawson and Hernandez whilst David Meyler has already indicated that he will be leaving. It would be great if Moses Odubajo reaches the first team before the season concludes and he gains a new deal. You half expect him to be released and the star for someone like Brentford or QPR afterwards. They can’t even agree a deal for Max Clark at the moment and that’s even more worrying considering he has just been on a small deal here for 3-4 years. One wonders about the morale at the club with these players and four loanees likely go leave in a couple of months. They have picked up performances in the two of the three games last week but if they get sucked back into the relegation dogfight will they have as much passion as players at the likes of Burton or Barnsley?

FIONA’S FOOD FOR THOUGHT By Fiona Dwyer, broadcast journalist, PR & media consultant, slave to 2 children and a husband. ARE YOU DOING ANYTING FOR LENT? For me, Lent is a time to take stock of my life and see if there’s anything I should be doing better….. and inevitably there is always something. Even if you don’t follow Lenten traditions, it’s still a good time to consider stopping a bad habit or starting something positive. It’s not just about giving up chocolate, why not think about spending more time with an elderly relative or carving out more quality time with your children. If you do that anyway, how about a good deed every day? It doesn’t have to be a huge thing and take a lot of time, but it could mean the world of difference to someone, restore their faith in humanity or, at least, bring a smile to their face.

SPRING CLEAN Talking of starting afresh, it’s that time of year again when I want to clear out the clutter and spring clean my house. I just want to know where it all comes from. How can we possibly have accumulated so much ‘stuff’? Now, I am one of those people who likes to keep things because they might come in useful one day. Well my garage and attic aren’t really agreeing with me anymore so it’s time to put on my big girl pants and be ruthless! Ruthless isn’t a word that I would associate with myself very often, if ever really, but needs must – and I know it will be worth it in the end.

MUST-SEE MOVIE If you haven’t seen it yet, I thoroughly recommend going to the cinema to watch The Greatest Showman. It’s one of those films that was apparently slow out of the gate at the box office but word-of-mouth has turned it into a mustsee movie – and I couldn’t agree more. Inspired by (not necessarily historically accurate) it tells the story of how Barnum, played by Hugh Jackman, created his famous circus. There’s a great cast and a real sense of spectacle and wonder as you watch. The musical numbers are, of course, fantastic. Even my husband and teenage son (who are not fans of musicals) gave it the thumbs up. And let’s face it, Hugh Jackman is always a pleasure to watch! And finally …….a Happy St Patrick’s Day to you all for March 17th and Happy Easter!
