How December’s base rate rise affects your mortgage The Bank of England (BoE) has raised UK interest rates to 0.25%. The move caught City forecasters unawares and follows on the back of a sharp rise in November’s inflation rate and against a backdrop of a surge in the Covid-19 Omicron variant. Mortgage customers with a home loan linked to the base rate are likely to end up paying more as a result of today’s announcement. At its last rate-setting meeting of 2021, the BoE’s Monetary Policy Committee voted overwhelmingly to raise the base rate by 0.15 percentage points from its historic low of 0.1%. The rise marks the first rate increase in nearly three years. Inflation – as measured by the Consumer Prices Index – stood at a heady 5.1% in the 12 months to November 2021, more than double its 2% target set by the government. The increase has largely been due to a combination of soaring energy costs and pressure on supply chains since trade re-opened post-Covid. What does a rate rise mean for home loans? A base rate rise has been on the cards for several months. Although customers with fixed-rate mortgages are shielded for the duration of their arrangement, an upward movement in the base rate can add extra costs to homeowners

January 2022

while there are some bargains around. It’s worth lining up a deal sooner rather than later, because when banks are convinced rises are on the way, fixed mortgage rates will go up before any announcement.” The good news is that mortgage customers with less than six months to run on a fixed deal can start shopping around for a new home loan now. That’s because lenders allow you to lock in a rate up to half a year in advance.

that have taken out variable rate mortgages. These include mortgage customers on standard variable rate deals and also tracker products. New mortgage deals had already factored in a rise. One of the regions largest chain of estate agents, said: “Even a small rate increase can have a marked effect on mortgage repayments that track the base rate… it makes a big difference to people’s budgets.” For example, if the rate on a £200,000 repayment tracker mortgage taken over 25 years were to rise from 3.5% to 4%, monthly payments would go up by an immediate £53. Borrowers on fixed rate loans will be sheltered for the duration of the

fixed term. But the deals available whenever they expire will be dearer. Lenders take their cue from movements in the base rate and many are likely to pass on this latest news to their customers. The MPC next meets in February 2022 and another rate hike is not out of the question. In response to December’s hike in rates, the BoE said: “Although the Omicron variant is likely to weigh on near-term activity, its impact on medium-term inflationary pressure is unclear at this stage.” Shop around now Sarah Hole is a personal finance analyst, said homeowners should start locking in better deals now: “If you’re on a variable rate deal, your rate is likely to increase with any BoE change. So, you may want to consider bagging a fixed deal before any changes kick in, and

It’s also worth exploring how much a rate rise could affect your future payments. This provides you with some breathing space to plan for how you could stretch your budget to cover a bigger monthly payment, should one be needed when your present deal finishes. A gradual rate of change might lull homeowners into a false sense of security, because it might not feel like too much of a stretch to find £33 more in the monthly budget. However, the cumulative effect of rate rises can be devastating and, in a few months, if your mortgage payments are £88 higher, life could be much more difficult financially. *DISCLAIMER: Any articles written or published by HullMag/BeverleyMag or East Riding Mag are not intended to constitute financial advice. HULL TRADE FIREPLACES As we enter the beginning of another new year and the end of a somewhat challenging 2021, at Hull Trade Fireplaces we are always optimistic when it comes to new beginnings. We want to take this time to thank all of our loyal and trusty customers, not just over the last year but over the last 5 years since we first started on our business venture. Hull Trade Fireplaces offer premium fireplaces and stoves at very affordable prices. We feel that our products and service come second to none in terms of value and attention to detail. We pride ourselves on our reviews and always go above and beyond to ensure our customers’ needs are met and that they are happy with the end product. This last year by far the most popular package we have been supplying and installing across all of Yorkshire and Lincolnshire and even as far as Leicestershire would be our:

Well with these fires there won’t be any need in potentially ‘putting your back out’- ideal for the older generation these fires are also in

At Hull Trade Fireplaces we offer a full bespoke service that includes building the false chimney breast, complete with alcoves if required, LED lighting, hanging the TV, supplying and installing the fire, fully plastering and finishing off the full job from start to finish leaving the customer nothing to do other than decorate. “We feel very optimistic about 2022. The last couple of years has seen us consistently busy all year round, which has been great. After the lockdown last year it was a scary time for all of us but we plugged away and kept on providing our customers with their essential heat sources. When the showroom was forced to close we were forced, reluctantly at the time, into selling online. This has been, and still is, a very successful side of our business. We are looking forward to seeing what 2022 holds for us and are raring to go early in January to pick up where we left off - providing excellent service and unbeatable prices to the good people of HULL & EAST YORKSHIRE.”

Interiors: Ways to add colour to an all-white kitchen Give your space some personality by adding colour to a white kitchen - from tiles to appliances.

a deep wood for a more rustic touch, or a black stone for a more contemporary style. Make these elements feel at home by linking the colour elsewhere in the kitchen, for example with chairs, window treatments and small appliances.

Colourful kitchens aren’t for everyone, but every kitchen can include some colour. Adding colour to a white kitchen is a perfect compromise between quiet and loud. While white kitchens have restrained, crisp, clean feeling, they can tend to feel a bit sterile or bland if not carefully considered. A small splash of colour can elevate otherwise white kitchen ideas to a more joyful, personality-laden space. Ways to add colour to an all-white kitchen From warm touches of neutrals to bold pops of brights, there are many ways for you to get adding colour to a white kitchen. 1. Colour your lower units Cabinetry tends to take up rather a lot of space in the kitchen – and

3. Choose a colourful splashback An easy way to get adding colour to a white kitchen is to rethink your kitchen splashback ideas. Tiling is one of the most practical ways of doing this, so choose a bright patterned option for added interest. When going for patterns, stick to one new colour, keeping some white included for a cohesive feel.

in an all-white scheme you’re looking at row upon row of plain white doors. A pretty way to get adding colour to a white kitchen is to tackle some of these cabinets slightly differently. Leave upper cabinetry and work surfaces white. Then choose another colour altogether for the lower storage units. Go for a pale or pastel tone for subtlety, or a bright colour for impact. many kitchen colour schemes you opt for, due to the height it won’t feel too in your face, or even be visible from all angles. 2. in your hardware, too. Perhaps leather handles or brass taps. 6. Invest in a statement cooker hood Rather than trying to hide your cooker hood, make a statement of it and get adding colour to a white kitchen. A bold metallic choice with add a serious punch of luxe to the space, and you can link in the metal through handles, plug sockets and even your cutlery. If you’re looking for some more fun, look for a bright coloured option – either a painted metal or wood.

When it comes to choosing a colour, consider linking with any other shades already in use. Look to window treatments, small accessories or even your tableware for inspiration. 5. Include natural tones and textures Look to rustic kitchen ideas and add both colour and depth to your white kitchen by integrating natural materials. Wood, raffia and coloured metals all add natural textures and patina without detracting from the neutral space. Look for natural materials to use

7. Create a blackboard space Use blackboard paint on the strip of wall above on open shelf up to the ceiling for a touch of cafe chic.

Use white chalk to stick to your theme, or keep some coloured chalks to hand so you can add extra rainbow colours as and when you desire. 8. Decorate the insides of your cabinets The backs of cabinets and shelves, as well as the insides of drawers are a tailor made way of adding colour to a white kitchen. Use these otherwise ignored spaces to add unexpected impact and personality.

Either wallpaper or paint these nooks. It’s always worth learning how to paint kitchen cabinets so that it’s easy to re-do for when you feel you need to freshen things up.

9. Include coloured light shades We love a statement pendant light in a kitchen, so use this as an opportunity to add a little extra colour. You don’t need anything wild – go as dramatic or restrained with your kitchen lighting ideas colour choices as you see fit.

Do be aware that the light cast from coloured shades does vary. Glass and material shades in oranges, pinks and reds cast warm glows, while you get a cooler effect from blues and greens. Metal options tend not to affect the light too much as they tend to be kept white inside. 10. House & Home kitchen ideas. This timeless duo of black and white doesn’t have to belong to a modern space alone; it’s just as much at home in a classic or country kitchen.

12. Add warmth with wood Since wood is a neutral itself, it’s a natural accompaniment to otherwise white kitchens. Choose one tone of wood and use it liberally. You could have it as you table and chairs, and even integrate it into your cabinetry and lighting, too. Lighter shades of wood will create a warmer look against the white, while darker options will create a more dramatic contrast.

Matte black finishes rather than anything too glossy works with this look, so go for ceramics with an artisan feel, traditional spindleback chairs or a simple pendant light.

13. Choose contrasting panelling Upgrade your kitchen on any budget by using stained, panelled wood as a splashback. Take this further up the wall behind open shelving to create a rustic-style display.

You don’t just have to go for brown, either. Wood stains come in all manner of colours, so you have plenty to choose from. Remember that stains affect different types of wood differently, so always test stain an area or a spare plank.

11. Invest in colourful appliances Don’t be put off by brightly coloured appliances. Just ensure you’re happy with the colour you choose as they’re such a big investment. For a country style, pastel tones are perfect for a subtle injection of colour. Go with bold brights for a contemporary or retro style kitchen and strong heritage tones for a traditional kitchen.

14. Paint sections of the wall Even in the smallest of kitchens, there are bound to be sections of wall separated from the rest. This

could either be from cabinetry or just alcoves from how the room has been built. Paint these smaller sections in a colour other than white for a splash of colour without committing to changing the scheme of the kitchen. This is also a great way to include grey kitchen ideas, if you can’t say goodbye to that trend just yet.

Beverley Architects looking for continued growth in 2022 Alessandro Caruso Architects (ACA) is an innovative architecture and interior design practice in Beverley - we recently caught up with them to see how the business is growing.

Years ago, ACA’s co-founder Alex Caruso, suffered an almost fatal motorbike crash, spending months in hospital. The environment was functional, but poorly-designed, so Alex promised himself, when he recovered, “to place a special emphasis on wellbeing in his designs to help other people feel better”. Therefore, ACA’s mission is “to improve people’s lives through design: visitors, staff, patients, homeowners or students”. ACA designs for the healthcare, education, commercial and residential sectors. We assist with site assessments, feasibility studies, building regulations and the tendering process for extensions, conversions and new builds. Looking Back at 2021 Additions to the Team We employed an apprentice, two part II architectural assistants and a senior architectural technologist.

Alessandro Caruso, ACA’s co-founder Award Nominations and Wins! ACA won an international award for the Allam Diabetes Centre, a national award for Architectural Practice of the Year and was finalist for two others. ISO 9001 Certification ACA received the welcome news of successful ISO 9001 certification! In fact, ACA is one of the few architectural practices in Yorkshire to have it! Completed Projects ACA completed several projects, for example, the award-winning Allam Diabetes Centre at the front of Hull Royal Infirmary, generously part-funded by the Allam family. “My family and I are proud to be associated with such an iconic building, whose beautiful and inspired design has both lifted and transformed the local street scene to an unprecedented level.” Ehab Allam. Looking Ahead into 2022. We will start work on several exciting projects, move into a new office and recruit additional staff.

Electioneering to begin for East Riding’s UK Youth Parliament representative Electioneering will start in earnest this Year as 26 candidates go on the campaign trail in a bid to be elected as the East Riding representative on the UK Youth Parliament. The candidates, who range from the ages of 11 to 18 and come from a wide range of backgrounds and abilities, are currently putting the finishing touches to their manifesto videos which will launch in January. Voting will take place in February with young people across the East Riding going to the polls to elect two candidates to sit on the UK Youth Parliament, and two deputies. The winning candidates will be announced in March and those who are elected will get to sit in the Houses of Parliament in Westminster and vote on issues that are important to young people and help make a positive change for everyone. The elections have been organised by East Riding of Yorkshire Council in partnership with East Riding Voluntary Action Services (ERVAS), who have received funding from the National Lottery Community Fund.

But it’s not just elected members that young people will be voting for in February as they will also be asked to take part in the national Make Your Mark ballot and vote on a number of issues they feel are important to them not only on a local level but also nationally. Councillor Ben Weeks, chairman of children and young people overview and scrutiny committee at East Riding of Yorkshire Council, said: “I would like to offer my congratulations to all 26 candidates and wish them the best of luck on the campaign trail. “I think it’s fantastic that these elections for the UK Youth Parliament have captured the imagination of so many of our young people who are keen to get involved in politics and the democratic process.” Detty Tyler, children and young people’s services co-ordinator at ERVAS, said: “The young people standing as candidates have covered a wide range of topics in their manifestos, all of which are important and I look forward to working with them in the future to make positive changes for young people in East Riding, as well as nationally.”

Antiques & Collectables

Television Antique Shows Rob Walls and Janette Wilkinson share their love of all things collectable...

The auction itself was fun and exciting. The drill was no problem, it was correct and a quality item going for £40, doubling our money spent on it. The scales, our big worry was next. There was a lot of interest as they were quality. The opening bid was £80 and eventually sold for £220. The wool holder, our banker, sold for £35. We had done it, a GOLDEN GAVEL. We were over the moon.

Rob I don’t have a bucket list, but one of my all-time ambitions was to appear on a television antique show. I appeared on Dickinson’s Real Deal last year. I found this a real easy show to do as you just turn up with an item of interest and hope that you ‘make the cut’. I took along a Sunderland Lustre Ware Plague (dated c1870), I had recently purchased it in a charity shop for the grand total of £7. It was initially viewed by a member of the production team and then it got moved on to the auctioneer’s expert. He asked me a few questions including, ‘Do you know what it is?’ and ‘How much are you expecting to sell it for?’ If the expert thinks that it is something to appear on the show, you get moved on to the waiting area where tea and sandwiches await. Again, an expert comes to talk to you, and you have to fill in various forms. Eventually the big moment arrives – in front of the camera. I have to say that my buyer, Tim, was very nice. We agreed what we were going to talk about and what was to happen. Lights, camera, action! ‘Hello Rob, tell me what you have brought along today.’ Tim started at £20 and we eventually agreed at £55. The question that always comes next is, ‘What are you going to spend the money on?’ My reply was a pub dinner and a pie from my favourite bakers. That’s basically how it went. We then did a few retakes of the bidding and a bit more talking about the plague. It was a pleasant experience and when I saw myself on air, I thought it looked very good indeed. Bargain Hunt – the big one and the one I had been waiting for. All the spade work (form filling, making and sending in a 2-minute video) was all done by Janette. We went to the audition in York that included a set of games about antiques, questions about our knowledge (you don’t need any!) and a bit

January 2022

turn, we were well looked after, and we talked with the other teams and enjoyed the buffet. Again, we were talked to by the production team and told what to expect about the filming.

Then came the bonus buy. Charles had bought a gold Art Nouveau pendant and paid £140 for it. I didn’t want to go for it, but Janette was given the choice and said ‘Yes’. It sold for £95. Overall, we made a profit of £95. Charles Hanson with Rob Walls

of background information. We had to take an item each that said something about you and had to talk about it in front of the camera. We were asked who we would like as our expert and was measured for a fleece. After about a 4 week wait, we found out that we had been selected to go on the show. We were invited to buy our antiques at Wetherby Racecourse on a wet, cold and windy Sunday. We spent the morning with the other teams being filmed that day waiting for our turn. Buffet lunch and hot drinks were provided and it was such a friendly atmosphere. We were told about the show and told what we could and could not buy – ivory, tortoise shell, rose wood and trademark items are all on the do-not-buy list. The show was introduced by Charlie Ross. We were the red team and our expert was our favourite, Charles Hanson. The blue team got David Harper. We enjoyed our time with Charles, and he talked us through various antiques that we

wanted to buy. He made a couple of suggestions that we didn’t exactly ignore, but did not accept either! You do only get one hour and it’s not as easy as it looks. We were given a £75 challenge and we had to buy an item ‘relating to the coast’. We set and looked a few items pointed out by Charles. Then I saw a shipwrights’ drill, a coastal item, and purchased it for £20. The next item Janette chose, a beautiful if expensive, set of Victorian scales and weights for £130. Our last item was a Mauchline ware wool holder for £10. We were all done in about 40 minutes. I was confident about the drill. I just liked the look of it, and it is something I would have bought myself. The scales were the big worry, had we paid too much for them? The wool holder was our banker, we couldn’t fail to make a profit at £10 spent.

The blue team also did well. They made a profit on each item, won a golden gavel, and their bonus buy made a profit. They made an overall profit of £75. We didn’t talk about the auction to the other teams until the final bit of filming, so it came as a surprise that we had all done so well and we won! When Bargain Hunt was aired, I booked a room at my local pub and invited ‘anyone who knew me’ to come along. 30 people from the village turned up and it was a roaring success. I had kept our win a secret, so celebrations took place. I would recommend the television antique shows to anyone. It’s a great way of antique buying. The whole experience is fantastic, and you learn a great deal. Of course, it’s nice to win and be successful.

Janette There is not a great deal more to say about Bargain Hunt as Rob has The auction was at Beverley Racecourse on a Sunday in October. captured the event well. It was a really enjoyable experience, one of Dressed as the red team and kept away from the auction until it’s your the best things I have ever done. Everyone enjoys themselves; you meet lovely people and its just so happy. I was worried about the scales as my dad told me not to spend over £100 as nobody ever makes a profit on anything over £100, and scales often lose money. If you were the person who bought Victorian brass and iron grocer’s scales on a marble plinth with a wooden base, complete with a full set of brass weights at an auction in Beverley on Sunday 27th October 2019, Thank you. If you ever want to sell them, I would love to buy them off you! From Left: Charles Hanson with Janette, Rob, Charlie Ross, The 2 Blues and David Harper David

Hidden: Cold War Women The new exhibition at the Treasure House in Beverley, ‘Hidden: Cold War Women’, gives a glimpse into a lesserknown period of history, the Cold War.

The exhibition centres on photographic portraits of local women by artist Lee Karen Stow. Many of the women were members of the Royal Observer Corps or serving with the RAF. Some were involved with local authority Emergency Planning, whilst others were part of the peace moment. In their testimonies, the women reflect on living through this unique period of history, which was dominated by the threat of annihilation from nuclear war. Visitors can also see examples of some of the substantial Cold War related material held in East Riding Archives, plus technical equipment, such as radiation counters and warning devices, on loan from York Cold War Bunker (English Heritage).

The exhibition is the result of an Arts Council England funded project, which started back in 2018. It will run until 19 March. Welcome 2022…

Oberammergau's Passion Play 2022— only every 10 Years. Are you planning to travel in 22, 23 or 24?

I have noticed many clients now planning well ahead for a special holiday to a destination that has been on their bucket list for ages. With the last two years and so little being spent on holidays compared to the norm I can fully understand this mind set. In fact I have joined in myself booking for 2023. What wonderful travel experiences are being shared on the television although, I hope our guests cruising around the world in 80 days with Fred Olsen in 2023 have a better experience than David Tennant! Now back to reality, have you seen a destination that has pressed your buttons and want to know more? Of course you can always ask for our help but if you are looking for brochures to browse this is not an easy at the moment as many tour operators are not choosing to issue paper copies. If you have the internet why not pop on to our site www.marionowentravel.com and you will see the tab for brochure rack and can browse brochures to your hearts content. You will find not only regular holidays but a quirky selection to offer you something a little different and give you inspiration. Staying closer to home UK holidays are in abundance whether you are choosing to sit back and relax on a coach, drive yourself or take the train. The latter two it is possible to arrive at a hotel and then enjoy escorted touring during your stay to make the most of the area. Jersey is a favourite destination of mine and only a short flight. It is such an interesting island steeped in history with a continental feel. Due to no less than seven hotels closing last year I expect that there will be a shortage of hotel beds this year, early booking is recommended. The Jersey Air Show is always popular in early September as is the Battle of the Flowers & Liberation Day. Flying direct from Humberside on a Saturday also makes this a popular & easy option for a week away. Flights operate May to September. Remember that holidays booked as a package offer you the greatest security where ever you are looking to travel. Train travel to the continent is becoming more and more popular. There are so many itineraries that can be pre booked as a package allowing you to relax knowing that you can enjoy following the ready planned journey. Take in a number of cities, enjoy fabulous mountain scenery in the European Alps or why not venture into Scandinavia? You don’t have to travel to the other side of the world to have a new adventure there are many much closer to home. I hope that later in the year Australia & New Zealand will welcome visitors back with open arms. I know many of you are missing relative & friends on the other side of the world and hope that flights will be available to accommodate your passage in the coming months. Cruising is the answer to my perfect holiday allowing me to enjoy so many experiences in the one trip whether sailing down a river with land visible at all times or on the high seas from coastline to coastline. You unpack just the once and enjoy being looked after throughout your holiday by the same friendly faces. Ships can offer a great deal of space creating a safe environment. Tune in to our Regent Seven Sea’s Event on Wednesday 26th January at 6pm and you can see for yourself. Just email info@marionowentravel for your complimentary invitation. I do believe you will be surprised at what life on board has to offer. Let us hope that we can continue to travel this year, a change is definitely as good as a rest and I would recommend a break as a great tonic. Next month fingers crossed I can share my Northern Lights adventure with you. When you are ready to start planning we are here to guide you all the way. There are so many options available to travel around our wonderful world including the UK. We look forward to the opportunity of sending you away and creating wonderful memories for you to treasure. With best wishes

The third generation of Suzuki’s S-Cross.

It’s a happy New Year for fans of Suzuki’s S-Cross SUV, with an exciting new version going on sale. Roy Woodcock reports . . . A New Year and a new car . . . for debuting this month is the third generation of Suzuki’s S-Cross. And the good news is, the plain Jane of the surging SUV market has cast off its drab garb and donned a sparkling new outfit. Respected for its off-road ability and acclaimed for its good value, the Suzuki S-Cross was nevertheless something of a Cinderella while its more radiant relative, the Vitara, won the popularity contest. In fact, the Vitara outsold the similarly priced S-Cross by four to one. The situation has now been redressed – quite literally – and starting 2022 with a bang there’s a very heavily face-lifted S-Cross that has the looks to compete with the likes of the Peugeot 2008/3008, Nissan Qashqai and SEAT Ateca. It sits on the same platform as before, has a similar 1.4 Boosterjet hybrid engine and the dimensions are largely unchanged, but boot and passenger space is a tad more generous. Slightly longer than the big-selling Vitara, it boasts greater boot space with a capacity of 430 litres, still slightly short of rivals such as the Ateka. In addition to a totally new nose and tail, the cabin has been improved with more soft touch plastic and a more up-to-date infotainment centre. Two S-Cross versions are on sale

– Motion which starts at £24,999 and Ultra at £27,999. The latter comes with all bells and whistles, including four wheel drive, part leather seating, glass panoramic sunroof and 360 view camera. Even the entry model gets front and rear sensors, dual zone air con, heated front seats and keyless entry. Standard issue is the excellent turbo petrol 1.4 engine which pushes out an impressive 129 horsepower yet has emissions of just 120g/km in two-wheel drive form, allied to frugal economy of 53.2mpg combined. There are plenty of safety measures built in, including blind spot monitor, rear cross traffic alert,

The mild hybrid power unit with Boosterjet technology is a lively performer giving the S-Cross nimble acceleration – 0 to 62mph in less than 10 seconds – alongside decent toque meaning that frequent rowing through the gears is seldom necessary. Pressed hard, the unit can become a bit vocal, but throttle back and noise levels are pleasantly hushed. Suspension is relatively soft, allowing a composed and comfy ride. There’s plenty of grip through corners and the Ultra version’s all

wheel drive gives an added sense of security. Payback for the cosseting ride is some body-roll when cornered quickly but this has little affect on the car’s stability. Few small SUVs offer the option of 4WD, so it’s all credit to Suzuki remaining faithful to its original principles. It is certainly good news for country dwellers who don’t want to spend a fortune on their vehicle. Suzuki’s ALLGRIP “Select” system is fitted as standard on Ultra models and Suzuki is unique in the sector by offering 4WD with both manual and automatic transmissions. The system incorporates four

Motoring driver-selectable modes for safe, enjoyable driving on diverse surfaces and has proved very successful. In further development, it was then enhanced by the addition of a “feed forward” function that allocates torque to the rear wheels before any slippage can occur. The system’s four driverselectable modes are as follows: Auto: The auto mode prioritises fuel economy in typical driving conditions and uses two-wheel drive by default. It switches to four wheel drive if it detects wheel spin. Sport: The sport mode is optimal for twisty roads. The system makes maximal use of four-wheel drive in accordance with accelerator inputs. At low and mid-range engine speeds, the system alters the accelerator/torque characteristics to optimise engine response and cornering performance.

Also worth mentioning is that Hill Hold Control is available as standard on both models, making hill starts much easier by preventing the vehicle from rolling backwards for two seconds as soon as the driver removes his or her foot from the brake to the accelerator pedal. Following hard on the heels of the upgraded Ignis and the new Across and Swace, Suzuki has ushered in the New Year with a bold car making a bold statement. * All Suzuki models are covered by a three-year/60,000-mile new vehicle warranty, one year AA Suzuki Assistance, providing 24-hour UK and European roadside assistance, recovery and associated services; and by a 12-year perforation warranty.

Snow: The snow mode is optimal for snowy, unpaved, and other slippery surfaces. The system uses four-wheel drive by default. It optimises four-wheel drive control in accordance with steering and accelerator inputs to promote traction and stability on low friction surfaces.

19

Lock: The Lock mode is for extricating the car from snow, mud, or sand. A limited slip differential is fitted which helps brake any slipping wheel and transfer torque to the gripping wheels.

15 Wedding Planning Questions, Answered By The Experts The minute we asked you to tell us your biggest wedding planning worries, the questions came flooding in. From choosing a band and managing budgets to intimate wedding tips, most of them called for some professional advice. Here, Jane Gough of The East Yorkshire Bride Guide shares her expert insight ahead of your big day… . QUESTION: For smaller budgets, where can you cut costs and what’s non-negotiable? First, look at your guest list. Try to keep it small, as this gives you more spend per head. Also, choose your venue wisely – if you opt for somewhere with beautiful interiors and great styling you won’t need to add extra décor. Think about your flowers – go for fewer but larger floral displays rather than trying to stretch your budget across multiple smaller ones. You could also consider a registry office wedding ceremony followed by dinner at a local restaurant. This takes the pressure off having a band, picking up a large bar tab, and puts a limit on guest numbers – but it still feels fun. You can also have post-wedding drinks at a fancy hotel or an after-party at a friend’s house. One of the positives of the pandemic is that anything

with zero corkage fee are also pretty attractive. Make sure you work with local suppliers and be flexible – if you have your heart set on bringing a ten-piece band from London to a remote part of Yorkshire, know that it will be expensive. A well-crafted playlist will still get people up and dancing – you don’t need live music throughout the entire day if you’re working to a tight budget. Foodwise you don’t want to scrimp, but you can control the timings – go for plenty of canapés, a decent starter, a hearty main with sides and then serve dessert as evening food.

goes now. On that note, abandon tradition – you don’t need to pay for your bridesmaids’ dresses (or even have a wedding party if you don’t want one), you don’t need favours and you don’t need a cake in addition to a dessert. Venues

Finally, spend your money on the photographer and videographer. Buy your dream outfit and get fully pampered beforehand. No matter your budget, the couple always set the tone for the day, so if you go into your day feeling your best, it’ll be great. QUESTION: When should you book a wedding planner? All planners will say as early as possible. They can advise on the wedding as a big picture from the very beginning, as well as help you set your budget and create the day you want. That said, it’s also common for clients to approach planners once they’ve already sourced a venue. Having a planner’s support is essential if you’re choosing a dry-hire space or to have a large marquee at home; a planner can help you identify your priorities, design your space, and again, make it work with the budget. If you’re looking to organise something short-term, a planner can also work wonders. I’ve put together a three-day wedding in five months – sometimes a short lead time can encourage clients to make quick decisions! QUESTION: So, is it actually possible to plan a small wedding in six months? Six months is plenty of time to plan a wedding. Just be aware you will have to be efficient at making decisions – once you decide on something, stick to it and move on. Create a planning schedule, too – listing the items and decisions that need to be made each week will keep you more in control every step of the way.

To help you make swift choices, get recommendations from people you trust or the other vendors you’re working with. It will save you time on research, meetings, and scrolling through endless sites and potential contracts. Remember, be flexible – some of the vendors you want, such as a photographer or cake maker, can be booked years in advance, so they might not be available at short notice.

QUESTION: How do you come up with a soundtrack for a wedding – band or playlist? Music at a wedding is key for creating and building an atmosphere. Start with something engaging and light-hearted at the drinks reception to create a sense of anticipation. Then, invest in the best party band or live DJ ensemble you can afford. From the reception, through to the wedding breakfast, the first dance to when the lights go down – a great band or good DJ will curate the perfect soundtrack. They usually include music to suit all age ranges and tastes, too – a good band do their homework on their audience. Then, as the night moves on, make sure the sound does too. Old school classics will always get people on the dancefloor. QUESTION: Where can you find a reasonably priced, good band? Cheaper isn’t always better when it comes to bands. If you’re really limited on budget, an acoustic act or one with their own equipment is often more affordable than a band – especially when you’re asked to cover production and riders. Ideally, you want to provide the production (sound and lighting) so its cohesive,

Spring Weddings but not everyone has the budget. Roaming bands are a big hit as they’re more interactive with the guests. See who has performed at your venue recently and listen to their work. For those who want more impact, a large-scale performing band is always a crowd pleaser. Look for bands which regularly work near your venue as this will cut down on travel costs. Entertainment company costs will vary, but they can give you some options based on date, venue and budget. QUESTION: Where do you find good hair and make-up artists? There’s a wealth of talented hair and make-up artists to choose from out there. Whether it’s a highoctane Hollywood glamour look or a natural style you’re going for, there are so many experts to reach out to. Some hair and make-up agencies have different artists on their books, but Instagram and social media are good search tools as well – think of them as a shop window where you can see people’s work and the before and after photos. Do a trial with them and be honest – they’re not mind readers – so the more direction you give them the better. If you’re unsure, try two or three to see who works best. Also, bear in mind that if you have a bridal party larger than three people, you’ll need more than one person to help you get ready.

QUESTION: How would you go about decorating a church? Church florals are one of the most important parts of a wedding. They can set the tone for the rest of the day and mark one of the most significant moments of your marriage. If possible, go big at the church if the budget and individual restrictions allow – a full or deconstructed arch outside the main doors is the perfect backdrop for photos. Also, think about having a couple of altar urns which can be moved to the reception venue after – they’re a great way to frame the ceremony, but make sure they don’t block the view. If you have the space, floor-based meadows

destination – connecting flights and long journeys may be quite costly if you’re not picking up the tab. This is one area where hiring a wedding planner can make all the difference – either someone local or someone who has lots of experience with destination weddings. Remember, communication is key, so be aware of any language barriers which may make things more stressful. Finally, always have a wet weather plan for any outdoor events, even if the destination is historically dry at that time of year.” can usually be moved to the venue afterwards, too. “In terms of percentage of budget spent on florals for the ceremony as opposed to the reception, it doesn’t make sense to spend too much money on the former – just enough to make it count, and if you can reuse and repurpose the arrangements, then all the better. Take your florist’s advice on this and make it work for you. QUESTION: Is there a way to make a small wedding feel special? Consider an à-la-carte dinner menu which offers guests a chance to select their preferred choices. Seat guests on one long table, too – it’s visually more impactful and more intimate than having multiple small tables with not many people round them. Think about having live music during dinner – it takes the experience to the next level. Personalisation also adds a special touch – whether it’s a handcalligraphed menu with the guest’s name on it, a hand embroidered napkin, or a monogrammed throw draped on the back of each chair, a smaller wedding is all about the tiny details. QUESTION: Where do you start with organising a wedding abroad? First, set yourself a clear budget and ensure you factor in all the additional travel costs. Consider where your guests are travelling from before you pick your

QUESTION: If your friends and family all have kids – can you just invite adults without being rude? Yes, it’s your day. But if you are asking adults only, give guests enough time to plan their travel as well as their childcare. There will be some that can’t make it work, but most will appreciate the invite. The pandemic has shown us all how life can change quickly, and celebrations are back bigger and better than ever, so people will want to attend if they can. As long as the wedding is only a few hours away, most will be able to make a weekend of it. QUESTION: Is there a template for a running order on the day? A traditional running order goes ceremony, drinks reception (when photos can be done); then the wedding breakfast and dancing. It doesn’t need to be any more complicated than that, and a lot of the timings will be determined by your venue and the type of food and drink you serve. If you ask me, it’s better to have speeches between courses – after the main course, then after dessert with the best man going last to ensure a strong finish. I also love fireworks at the end of a night if they’re allowed. QUESTION: Is it worth having an outfit change as the bride? It’s always worth it. Wearing a wedding dress is most brides’ dream, but sometimes they can be heavy or difficult to move around in. After a while, and particularly during the summer, many brides want something cooler and a bit freer. It’s why many brides opt for a less structured second dress or bridal trouser suit these days – there really aren’t any rules anymore. QUESTION: Are wedding favours necessary? I’m not a fan of wedding favours – I’ve seen how many guests don’t use them and they usually end up being thrown away. Nowadays, they aren’t expected and if you want to do something, it’s better

to make them consumable – either something delicious to eat or a shot of something fun. Equally, make them useful – nobody needs a mini candle, cactus plant or a packet of seeds. QUESTION: Post-pandemic, is it still possible to get wedding insurance? It is more difficult than it was, and nowadays you can really only get insurance for ‘force majeure’ events – for example if the Queen was to die, a National Day of Mourning dictates all venues close. Apart from that, not much else is covered. It’s important to read the small print and protect yourself when booking venues and services. The value of using a professional wedding planner is that they can negotiate better terms, so you don’t lose deposits if you have to cancel for a valid reason. Thanks to the last 18 months, suppliers will agree transfer monies to a new booking date much more easily now. QUESTION: Finally, any ideas for what to do the day after the wedding? This really does depend on budget as well as the venue. If you’ve hired a villa or country house for the weekend you can make use of the space and have a post wedding party or simple brunch. For those wanting to carry on the celebrations a little longer, a postwedding pool party or festival are great ideas, or a more chilled family barbeque is just as nice. It’s a way to round off the wedding and say goodbye to your guests who have travelled to attend your event.

Top Beauty Hacks To Simplify Your Make-Up Routine There are endless tutorials out there showing you how to create the perfect makeup look – but for many of us, time is of the essence. If you fall into the latter camp, then here are my best hacks to simplify your makeup routine… Focus On Your Best Features “If you want to simplify and speed things up, focus on your best features. For example, one of my biggest bugbears is my short lashes, but I know that even if I spend forever on them, they still won’t have a huge impact on my overall look. Whether it’s brows or lips, play to your strengths. If you’re lucky enough to have full, bushy brows, for instance, simply sculpting them into place will improve your entire look.” Invest In Key Products “For simple, fast make-up, some products are more important than others. A bronzing mist stays put, leaves your complexion looking healthy and adds some speedy

glow. A concealer is also essential. Even a small amount can make a big difference – whether you use it to cover dark circles, the odd blemish or even out skin tone. Just don’t use ones that are too matte – a creamy consistency will be easier to work with. Another product is a highlighting powder. Yes, they give your complexion a beautiful glow in seconds, but they also work well on eyelids – especially gold tones. Likewise, everyone needs an eyeliner. Felt tips are great but they aren’t the best if you want a dead straight line. Instead, use a brush to scrape some colour off a gel eyeliner, then blend and build the colour onto your lids. Finally, use a lip and cheek duo – ideally ones with red tones – all over the face to perk it up. I love the new Rose Inc ones.”

Cheat A Feline Flick “A feline flick can instantly make your eyes look wide awake – it’s such a quick trick when you don’t want to make a lot of effort. For an easy, impactful feline flick, gel eyeliners are best applied with a brush. Also, keep an eyeshadow in the same shade close by to buff a little into the liner and create a more effortless, smoked-out effect. To extend the flick at the outer corner, use your brush and liner, pulling both in an up and outward direction. If you mess up, don’t panic, you can use a cotton bud with some micellar water to tidy it

up. My Kit Co does some incredible buds – they’re so thin and offer maximum precision.” Blot Your Lipstick “If lipstick is too much, simply blot it with tissue. You can also use your finger on the bullet of the lipstick and then press the colour onto the lips to create a stained effect that stays put and doesn’t transfer – it’s so quick and easy.

Another hack is to just use a liner instead. Providing you don’t have dry lips, simply scribble it on to define and add some colour to the lips. Just remember to smother lips in a balm the night beforehand so they stay smooth. To keep things even simpler, mix a lip pencil with a lip balm and push the combined colour into your lips at the same time.” Use Just One Brush “You only need one good brush to create several kinds of looks. My favourite is the Hourglass Vanish Foundation Brush. It blends everything together perfectly and can be used with several different textures – whether that’s concealer, foundation, bronzer or blush. I recommend it to anyone looking for simple, seamless results.”

Get Creative “You don’t always have to use products for their ‘designated’ purpose. For instance, I love using lipgloss and tinted lip balms on my cheeks and eyelids. Both give such a healthy, believable glow with just a hint of colour. They’re also easy to blend – products that are blendable are key for quick and simple beauty looks. That includes glosses, balms, creams and liquids.” Prioritise Exfoliation “If you want to keep your makeup on the simpler side, bright and healthy skin should cut the work in half – which is why regular exfoliation is key. I love the Kate Somerville Exfolikate Two Minute Treatment. Try using this – or something similar – in the shower on clean, damp skin. It resurfaces, brightens and improves uneven tone almost immediately. Finish with a rich, balmy moisturiser when you step out the shower and your skin will feel buttery soft. Remember, too much product pre-make-up will mean it’ll wear off quicker. If, like me, you love skincare, invest in some great overnight serums and treatments instead. That way you’ll save yourself time in the morning.”

Pinot Noir a perfect partner to lighter red meats like duck and lamb, or white meats like turkey, pork and chicken. Fuller-flavoured fish like salmon go well, or using bolder tasting cooking methods on fish as well.

World of Wine There’s something comforting about cosying up with a glass of red wine on a winter’s night; and Pinot Noir has the right amount of spice and complexity to chase away the biting cold. It’s one of the world’s most popular red wines, made from black-skinned grapes that thrive in a narrow spectrum of cooler climates. It’s also notoriously difficult to grow, but when done right, it produces lighter-bodied wines of elegance, complexity and longevity. Pinot Noir is one of France’s oldest grapes, cultivated more than a century ago by the Cistercian monks in Burgundy. Today, collectors prize Pinot Noir for its finesse and age-worthiness, especially from the most famous vineyards in Burgundy. Due to its popularity and difficulty to grow, it’s one of the world’s most expensive wines. But while Burgundy has long been the spiritual home of Pinot Noir, as

Earthy vegetables and herbs like mushrooms and thyme match the wine’s savoury flavours, especially when folded into risotto and pasta. Pairings that don’t work with Pinot Noir are foods that are dense and richly flavoured. They can overpower the delicacy of the wine.

the wines rose in fame and price, winemakers around the world sought to emulate the region’s success. This led to plantings of Pinot Noir throughout other parts of Europe and the New World and today it is considered to be an “International” variety. Switzerland, Germany, Austria, New Zealand, Australia, the United States (California, Oregon and New York) and Chile all produce Pinot Noir and some cracking examples, too. Typically, Pinot Noir is dry, lightto-medium-bodied, with bright acidity, silky tannins and alcohol that ranges between 12–15 per cent. The best Pinot Noir taste has complex flavours that include cherry, raspberry, mushroom and forest floor, plus vanilla and baking spice when aged in French oak. Pinot Noir wine taste varies based on climate and producer style. Cooler climates produce more delicate and light-bodied Pinot Noir. Warmer climates produce riper and fuller-bodied Pinot Noirs with higher alcohol. Some producers age their wines in 100 per cent new French oak which creates a fuller, textured wine. The best food pairings for Pinot Noir complement the wine’s pretty fruit flavours, bright acidity and elegant style. These qualities make

Serving it at the right temperature can be important - it has an ideal serving temperature range of 55–65 degrees Fahrenheit. Pinot Noir can be delicate and fresh, or rich and oak-aged. You can serve lighter wines closer to 55F, and fuller-bodied Pinots closer to 65F. And if you don’t finish a bottle of Pinot Noir, replace the cork and stick it back in the refrigerator. The flavours will stay fresh for one to three days. Beyond that, the wine will start to oxidise. A great example of Pinot Noir I tried recently reflects the grape’s spread around the world - Vina Leyda is the most awarded coastal winery of Chile and is renowned for its Pinot Noir – one of their emblematic grapes. The new 2020 Viña Leyda Reserva Pinot Noir is available now from Tesco priced £12 per bottle. Both aromatic and intense, this Pinot Noir is made with grapes from two of Viña Leyda’s vineyards, one of which is the most extreme in Chile, being based only 4km from the Pacific Ocean. It is a true expression of the variety, with an abundance of red and black fruits, spices and earthy hints, with

just a hint of creaminess, and I thoroughly recommend trying it. A sign that the “booze cruise” is consigned to the dustbin of history came last month, when Majestic announced the closure of its two Calais stores as changes to the duty-free alcohol allowance brought about by Brexit weigh on the economics of the business. The two stores are understood to have raked in £10m in annual sales prior to Brexit and the onset of Coronavirus. They are also said to have contributed £1m to the retailer’s bottom line, according to Retail Week. But Majestic’s Calais stores have been pushed into the red as revenues have dropped to a fraction of that level since April. UK residents were previously able to transport any amount of alcohol for personal consumption across the channel. Now, each adult can bring a maximum of 42 litres of beer and 18 litres of still wine into the UK. Also permitted are an allowance of either four litres of spirits or nine litres of fortified wine, sparkling wine or alcoholic drinks up to 22 per cent ABV, although this allowance can be split. And if you want to bring back quantities in excess of this, you have to declare that and pay the duty before you come back. You lose the allowance on the whole of that category, so if you bring back 20 litres of wine, you don’t get any wine allowance and have to pay duty and VAT on all 20 litres. Until next month - take care.

Exciting New Book Releases Coming In 2022

If you’ve resolved to make 2022 a year to get back into reading, look no further. From smart psychological thrillers and provocative debuts to new reads from some of the biggest names in publishing, next year has plenty of exciting releases in store. Here are the ones we’re looking forward to.... People Person by Candice Carty-Williams People Person is the followup to Candice Carty-Williams’ phenomenally successful debut, Queenie. Dimple Pennington is 30, and her life isn’t really going anywhere. An aspiring lifestyle influencer with a terrible and wayward boyfriend, Dimple’s life has shrunk to the size of a phone screen. And despite a small but loyal following, she’s never felt more alone. That is, until a dramatic event brings her half siblings Nikisha, Danny, Lizzie and Prynce crashing back into her life. When they’re all forced to reconnect with Cyril Pennington, the absent father they never really knew, things get even more complicated. Young Mungo by Douglas Stuart From Booker-prize winner Douglas Stuart (Shuggie Bain) comes this page-turning second novel, a vivid portrayal of working-class life and a highly suspenseful story of the dangerous first love of two young men: Mungo and James. Protestant Mungo and Catholic James live in the hyper-masculine and violently sectarian world of Glasgow’s housing estates. They should be sworn enemies, and yet they become best friends as they find a sanctuary in the pigeon dovecote that James has built for his prize racing birds. As they find themselves falling in love, they dream of escaping the grey city, and Mungo works hard to hide his true self from all those around

him. But the threat of discovery is constant and the punishment unspeakable. Imbuing the everyday world of its characters with rich lyricism and giving full voice to people rarely acknowledged in literary fiction, Young Mungo is a gripping and revealing story about the bounds of masculinity, the push and pull of family, the violence faced by so many queer people, and the dangers of loving someone too much.

intersect over several decades. Intellectually dazzling and extraordinarily moving, The Candy House is a bold, brilliant imagining of a world that is likely only moments away.

You Made A Fool Of Death With Your Beauty by Akwaeke Emezi Amazon Studios has already bought screen rights to Akwaeke Emezi’s (Freshwater, Pet, The Death of Vivek Oji) new novel You Made a Fool of Death With Your Beauty in a seven-figure deal. It’s the opportunity of a lifetime: Feyi is about to be given the chance to escape the city’s blistering heat for a dream island holiday: poolside cocktails, beach sunsets and elaborate meals. And as the sun goes down on her old life our heroine also might just be ready to open her heart to someone new. The only problem is, she’s falling for the one man she absolutely can’t have…

Burning Questions, 2004-2021 by Margaret Atwood My Body is a deeply honest From cultural icon Margaret Atwood comes this brilliant collection of essays which seek answers to ‘burning questions’ such as: Why do people everywhere, in all cultures, tell stories? How much of yourself can you give away without evaporating? And what do zombies have to do with authoritarianism? In over 50 pieces, Atwood aims her intellect and impish humour at our world and reports back on what she finds. The rollercoaster period covered in the collection covers the financial crash, the rise of Trump, and a pandemic. From debt to tech, the climate crisis to freedom; from when to dispense advice to the young (answer: only when asked) to how to define granola, there’s almost no better questioner of the many and varied mysteries of the human universe.

The Candy House by Jennifer Egan It’s 2010. Staggeringly successful and brilliant tech entrepreneur Bix Bouton is desperate for a new idea. He’s 40, with four kids, and restless when he stumbles into a conversation with mostly Columbia professors, one of whom is experimenting with downloading or “externalising” memory. Within a decade, Bix’s new technology, Own Your Unconscious – which allows you access to every memory you’ve ever had, and to share every memory in exchange for access to the memories of others – has seduced millions. But not everyone. In linked narratives, Egan spins out the consequences of Own Your Unconscious through the lives of multiple characters whose paths

Again, Rachel by Marian Keyes We can’t wait for Marian Keyes’ newest deep dive back into the lovable Walsh family. Twenty-five years after the iconic, 1.5 millioncopy bestseller Rachel’s Holiday burst onto the scene, Rachel’s back. Back in the 90s, Rachel Walsh was a mess. But a spell in rehab transformed everything. Life became very good, very quickly. These days, Rachel has love, family, a great job as an addiction counsellor – she even gardens. Her only bad habit is a fondness for expensive trainers. But with the sudden reappearance of a man she’d once loved, her life wobbles. She’d thought she was settled. Fixed forever. Is she about to discover that no matter what our age, everything can change?

At The Table by Claire Powell To Nicole and Jamie, their parents seem the ideal couple: a suburban double act, happily married for more than 30 years. So, when Linda and Gerry announce they’ve decided to separate, the news sends shockwaves through the siblings’ lives, forcing them to confront their own expectations and desires. Hardworking – and hard-drinking – Nicole pursues the ex she unceremoniously dumped six years ago, while people-pleasing Jamie fears he’s sleepwalking into a marriage he doesn’t actually want. But as the siblings grapple with the pressures of 30-something life, their parents struggle to protect the facade of their own relationship, and the secrets they’ve both been keeping. A gripping yet tender depiction of family dynamics, love and disillusionment, At the Table is about what it means to grow up – both as an individual and as a family. Free Love by Tessa Hadley From the bestselling author of Late in the Day and The Past, comes a compulsive new novel about one woman’s sexual and intellectual awakening in 1960s London. While London comes alive with the new youth revolution, the suburban Fischer family seems to belong to an older world of conventional stability: pretty, dutiful homemaker Phyllis is married to Roger, a devoted father with a career in the Foreign Office. Their children are Colette, a bookish teenager, and Hugh, the golden boy. But when the 20-something son of an old friend pays the Fischers a visit one summer evening, and kisses Phyllis in the dark garden after dinner, something in her catches fire. Newly awake to the world, Phyllis makes a choice that defies all expectations of her as a wife and a mother. Nothing in these ordinary lives is so ordinary after all, it turns out, as the family’s upheaval mirrors the dramatic transformation of the society around them. Free Love is a compulsive exploration of love, sexual freedom and living life.

Advice on Dealing with Bullying

Statistics show more than two-thirds of children will experience bullying at some stage – often as tweens or teens. And yet, many of them never tell anybody: a mix of fear, embarrassment and a lack of faith in support systems is usually to blame. That’s why, as a parent, it’s important to know what to look out for and what you can do about it. We asked a child psychologist and a behavioural and mental health expert to share their advice – as well as a mother who has experienced it first-hand…. First, what does bullying look like today?

Bullying is the intentional physical, emotional or psychological harm of one person caused by another or a group of others. Bullying may come in many forms and research suggests bullying amongst the sexes may manifest differently, with males resorting to physical domination or humiliation of another, while females tend to use subterfuge tactics such as exclusion, name calling, psychological torment or humiliation. Bullies are often insecure and choose to dominate others for fear of being ‘exposed’ as weak or inadequate. Cyberbullying has also seen a rapid rise in the age of social media and may take the form of cruel, humiliating or threatening messages, revenge-porn, websites or imagery being created designed to cause psychological harm and repetitive behaviours known as ‘spamming’ to cause inconvenience or distress.

What’s the impact of the different types of bullying?

In some ways emotional bullying can cause more damage, as it is often not as clear as physical bullying, so the bullied child blames themselves a lot more. Oftentimes, the bully can be a close ‘friend’ who sends mixed messages to cause even more selfdoubt and self-blame to the bullied child. In cases of physical bullying there are often visible traces of the harm, so it can sometimes be stopped sooner than emotional bullying. One of the worst types of emotional bullying is cyberbullying, because the individuals can hide behind fake identities and say things they wouldn’t say to someone’s face.

What are the red flags to look for which might suggest your child is being bullied?

Aside from physical injury in the case of physical bullying, emotional symptoms will likely be the same. The victim may become withdrawn or refuse to participate in social activities; they may become irritable or easily distressed. It may affect their sleep or eating patterns. In extreme cases bullying can produce self-harm behaviours or suicidal thoughts. In

January 2022

both instances shame is the intention of the bully, and shame may manifest in physical bullying as covering up the physical hurt or ‘laughing it off’. In emotional bullying ,shame may cause the sufferer to question if they have ‘caused’ the torment and attempt to ingratiate themselves to others or change their behaviour.

Should you ever try to confront them about it? You should let them know that you have noticed a change in their mood and behaviour, and that you wonder what’s going on. The most helpful thing to do is to listen to them and reiterate how they tell you they’re feeling with phrases like, “I hear you’re very angry and feel helpless.” You shouldn’t try to say things like, “But you also have friends remember?” because the child will assume you don’t know how much they’re suffering. Remind them of the friends they may have at another time. Instead, ask them what they think would be helpful and come up with ways to tackle the situation together. Even very young children have opinions, so it’s okay not to agree but make them feel listened to in the first instance. Come back later and say that, having heard what they said, you have thought about it and would like to take action and explain why. Children feel reassured knowing the adults in their life are trying to keep them safe.

What are some of the steps you can take? Children are often worried about sharing that they’re being bullied, so it’s important to listen and reassure them that you won’t take any action without agreeing a plan with them first. To support your child in making a decision, you could look at the school’s anti-bullying policy to get an understanding of how the school would address the situation. Older children and teenagers often want to try and manage the situation themselves first and prefer to have you as their sounding board where they can talk through some scenarios and how they might manage them. It’s important your child has some supportive friends, and it can be helpful for them to spend quality

Get Your Business Noticed

time with them away from school to build confidence. You could also seek support from the parents of your child’s friends.

civil rights to a safe and peaceful life as adults do, and the police should be there to protect those rights when other avenues have been exhausted.

If you decide together that it’s not working, and more support is needed, you should approach the child’s head of year. If the bullying continues, make a written complaint to the head teacher in writing, express your concerns and demand that the bullying must stop. Request a copy of the action taken by the school thus far. Your school will have a complaints policy, so familiarise yourself with this in case you need to take things to the next stage. If you’re invited to any meetings at the school, be sure to take some support with you and take notes. Keep talking and checking in with your child throughout this process, asking them what they would find helpful.” – Paula Talman, founder of iSpace Wellbeing, a mental health and wellbeing curriculum

Start by following the school’s antibullying policy and procedure, and give them a few days to consider this before starting the formal process. If the school fails to follow the procedure or does not deal with it in a satisfactory matter, request the school’s complaints policy and initiate a complaints procedure. You can also seek support from the Anti-Bullying Alliance, Children’s Legal Centre, Family Lives, Childline and YoungMinds. If the issue is not resolved after you have followed the school’s complaints procedure, you can also raise a complaint to Ofsted. As well as inspecting how schools perform, they have the powers to consider certain complaints about schools. For more information on making a complaint about a school if a bullying issue is not resolved, visit Contact.Ofsted.gov.uk/OnlineComplaints. As a final resort you could also raise your concern with the local authority and local MP.

Should you ever try to talk to the other parents directly?

“This would greatly depend on the relationship you have with the other parents and how receptive they might be to hear their child is a possible bully. If you do go down this route, it’s important to approach the conversation as a ‘let’s sort this out’ kind of chat. If the behaviour has gone beyond a certain point, a conversation might not be appropriate – you could instead choose to inform the parent of your next course of action, such as contacting the school or police.

What if teachers or the other parents ignore the problem?

People sometimes forget that what constitutes bullying (physical harming of another, harassment, cyberstalking etc) is actually a crime. If an adult hit another adult, we would likely report it to the police, and you can do the same for children. Children deserve to have the same

What are some of the coping mechanisms a parent can teach a child who is being bullied? It’s always important to stress to a child that abuse is wrong, and they haven’t done anything to deserve it. What’s happening to them is unkind, unfair and may even be illegal. Reinforcing the confidence of the child and the idea that they have an absolute right to safety is important. Messages such as ‘laugh it off’ or ‘stand up to them’ may not be the most helpful. That said, you could encourage a child (where appropriate) to develop a more confident persona. This might take the form of reminding them of their rights, reminding them that they can tell someone how to respect their personal boundaries and that abuse is never to be tolerated.

Education & Wellbeing What if you find out your child is the bully rather than the victim?

online safety so you can be sure they’re protected. If they’re worried about cyberbullying, they can also approach organisations such as Childline or YoungMinds, who will tell them to report it and block people who are bullying them. Also, keep the evidence. Write down what’s happening and keep screen shots. If you believe there’s inappropriate behaviour happening towards your child online, make sure you gather the evidence together and seek appropriate help from the AntiBullying Alliance.

First, support your child in exploring the cause of their behaviour – you may be feeling embarrassed, let down, and a bit of a failure but you need to put that aside and take control of the situation. Find out what’s causing your child to behave that way – there is most likely something that is causing them to feel unhappy. Your child may be worried about how you are going to react, so you need to reassure them you’re there to help them. Encourage them to discuss how they’ve been feeling and empathise with or validate those feelings. Also, identify their values – e.g. kindness, trust, honesty, loyalty – and set some clear boundaries. This helps children and young people make better choices. With your older child or teen, it’s best to find somewhere where you can have this conversation without them feeling under pressure – perhaps take a drive or go for a walk so they don’t have to look directly at you. Consequences also need to be explored – interestingly, children set their own consequences very high, but you can help them reach an acceptable punishment. The aim is to help children and young people to take responsibility for their actions, while at the same time boosting their self-esteem and self-worth.

Finally, what should you do if you think the bullying has done long-term damage?

Tell us about cyberbullying and how to deal with it…

Cyberbullying includes sending, posting or sharing negative, harmful, false or mean content about someone else. It can include sharing personal or private information about someone else causing embarrassment or humiliation. Sometimes, cyberbullying crosses the line into unlawful or criminal behaviour. Often it will occur on social media platforms such as Instagram, Snapchat and Tik

Tok or via messaging (text or apps) on mobiles/tablets. It can be hard to detect and prevent, depending on how much involvement you have in managing your child’s use of devices. You should make sure you know who your children are talking to online and encourage them to think about what they share. With older children and teens, they will want more privacy and you may need to agree parameters about

Being bullied is very often a trauma that doesn’t go away with time and the child might even need professional help. In some cases, if the child can have a positive experience of friendships, they can begin to trust again. If they are badly affected by the bullying and show signs of depression, anxiety and other symptoms, you need to take them to see a specialist to deal with the effects as soon as possible. Being bullied is one of the worst things an individual can go through, but if you get help early on you can overcome the feelings of self-blame that bullying often brings about, to regain confidence and strength. www.Anti-BullyingAlliance.org.uk

How To Feel More In Control As A Busy Mum Are you feeling stressed, overwhelmed or just generally frustrated with motherhood? East Yorkshire family coach Joan Brunt is on a mission to help you feel more in control. Believing that in order to regain balance, we need to deal with our own burnout, Joan’s method has won her a legion of loyal fans. Combining traditional counselling with Eastern philosophy to create a unique approach to happiness and connection, here are her golden rules for a happier family home… Start By Slowing Down

Having worked with over 1,700 families, they mostly have one thing in common – all are striving for better balance. Put simply, many families are out of balance because too many mothers are stressed. There is so much rushing around, comparison, perfectionism and pleasing that all make it really challenging for mothers to stay grounded and happy. If you feel like your energy is zapped, you’re exhausted, and your motivation levels are depleted – like you are stuck in the day-to-day motions and don’t know how to get off the hamster wheel – start putting yourself first. As a mother that might sound hard to do, but the key is to slow down and feel more. Many mothers get addicted to their to-do lists, but it will only deplete your energy levels.

Deal With Burnout

Low energy, exhaustion and feeling out of touch with your true self are all signs of burnout. Remember that a burnt-out mum will only lead to overthinking, overcomplicating and worrying – you won’t actually be able to notice what’s really going on around you. The more you think, the more you suppress how you feel, and the more you do this, the less you feel. Your moods will be worse, and you won’t have enough energy to be there for your children. Overthinking also prevents you from being in the present. If you aren’t present, then you’ll be unable to enjoy time spent with your children.

Prioritise Self-Care

If you want your family to be happier, it has to start with you. Try to commit to 20 minutes every morning for seven days to explore things like yoga and meditation. My recommendation

is to do this first thing before the children wake up, but you must do what works best for you and your family. Mindful morning routines have a domino effect on the rest of your day – they provide you with time to prioritise yourself and everything that follows will be better. Meditation also teaches us to be more present. Start small with just one to five minutes of meditation – you can always build up from there.

Tackle It As A Team

A lot of my clients often feel quite disconnected from their partner. Children are extremely sensitive and pick up on imbalances within the home, so it’s essential both parents are on the same team, setting the same boundaries, and demonstrate love and affection towards one another. I get it – life gets busy, days fill up with menial tasks, and for whatever reason, passion and romance seem to be the first things to go. Try to increase your awareness of how you’re showing up for your partner. How do you greet them first thing in the morning? Are you making time for each other in the evening? It’s also essential to consciously connect with your partner – pick one a night a week that works for you both and go on a date night.

Find Your Own Space

I’m a big believer in having a space to call your own at home. Start with one corner – it can be anywhere, from a bedroom corner to a garden shed – and make sure it’s uncluttered, calm and large enough to move around in. Visualise yourself there, drinking a cup of tea, reading a book or doing some yoga. This will be a space where you can relax and recharge. Investing a little time and money could be the first step to making yourself a priority. It’s also a small thing, but when you’re in your space (and in the other rooms of your house), put on some soothing music (preferably without lyrics) to calm the central nervous system. It really works.

Start Doing Yoga

Even if your day feels busy, taking just ten minutes out can help. Yoga is a time-tested way to shift stagnant energy within the body, which in turn will help be present. Even better,

start doing yoga with the family. Kids love yoga – their spontaneity and creative expression are the perfect match. You can start by putting a family yoga session in the calendar. At first, less is more – start out with a ten to 15-minute practice if you have younger children, and 30 minutes for pre-teens and teenagers.

Drop The Comparison Game

Whether it’s the daily scroll on social media or observing what the other parents are wearing at school drop off, we’re all guilty of comparing ourselves to others. We say things like, ‘I wish my life looked like that,’ or ‘I wish I could balance home and work like she does.’ My top tip is to get clear on why you’re doing it and how it makes you feel about yourself. Do you compare yourself because you’re unsure of how to do something and you’re curious to learn another way? Or do you compare yourself because you want what someone else has and it makes you jealous? Remember, jealousy is often a sign we aren’t living how we really want to, so it might be worth examining this instead of constantly shaming yourself for it.

Put Your Phone Away

I get it – days can be manic and not everything will go to plan. If this sounds familiar, one of the simplest ways to make evenings less stressful is to avoid bringing your phone to meals, bathtime and bedtime.

Put away the screens and other distractions and instead spend quality time with your family, giving them all your attention. You will instantly feel more connected to your child.

Establish Healthy Boundaries

If you find yourself doing things for your child which they could do themselves; if you constantly question your child over everything; or if you overshare with your child and treat them like a friend, this could be a sign you are blurring too many boundaries as a mother. Learning how to apply boundaries allows us to be more in control our emotions. If your upbringing did not teach you how to create and maintain healthy boundaries, it’s not too late to start. Like everything, start small, practice, and in time it will become second nature. When your kids cross a boundary, let them know they have and hold them accountable.

If All Else Fails, Have Realistic Expectations

Mothers are human, and we’re designed to experience a range of emotions. It’s not natural to feel really happy all the time, and it’s not natural to be beaming with positivity when we’ve had a rubbish night’s sleep. It’s also not natural to feel like you’re running on empty all the time, either. It’s about balance, not about pushing down feelings we don’t want to feel or deal with, like tiredness, or guilt for feeling negative when we’re tired. It can help to establish a neutral mindset – not a positive or negative one, but somewhere in the middle. A neutral mindset can allow you to be yourself instead of pleasing others. It’s a mindset that will allow you to admit you are really tired, and one that gives you permission to cry, ask your partner for help or go to bed at 6:30pm.

Lindt The latest chocolate from this world-famous chocolatier is rich, creamy, and fully vegan. Available in Smooth and Hazelnut flavours, Lindt’s vegan chocolate uses oat milk and almond paste to create an indulgent treat that chocoholics will fall in love with.

We have a choice about what we eat, and millions of people around the world have chosen to adopt a diet that doesn’t harm animals in any way – by going vegan!

Iceland Iceland is offering a discount of up to 50% on many of its most popular vegan products to celebrate Veganuary. Offers include half-priced Fry’s vegan hot dogs and Linda McCartney sausages, and discounted Chicago Town vegan pizzas and packs of Greggs vegan sausage rolls.

Scientific evidence shows that our bodies actually function better when we don’t consume any meat, eggs or dairy products. Eating animal products can clog your arteries with cholesterol and increase your risk of developing obesity, cancer, diabetes and heart disease. It also massively increases your carbon footprint and involves daily participation in a system that exploits, maims and slaughters animals. A compassionate plant-based diet is the obvious choice for people who are worried about cruelty to animals, climate change or their health. It’s becoming more and more popular every day, and as a result, vegan options abound in restaurants, in supermarkets and on the high street. So what are you waiting for? COVID is still with us – help stop the spread this winter COVID-19 is very much still around, so it’s crucial that you remain vigilant and respond to symptoms in a responsible and timely fashion. Spotting the signs of COVID-19

There are multiple symptoms of COVID-19 that you need to look out for, in particular: l l l l

A high temperature: A high temperature is usually considered to be 38C or above. If you don’t have a thermometer, check to see if your back or chest are hot to the touch.

l A new, continuous cough: This includes coughing a lot for l over an hour or having three or more coughing episodes in 24 l hours. If you usually have a cough, COVID will make it worse. l A loss or change to your sense of smell or taste: Things may l smell or taste different to usual, or you might not be able to l smell or taste anything at all.

What to do if you have any of these symptoms

If you have one or more of the above symptoms, even if they’re mild, there are a few actions you need to follow: l Have a PCR test: This is a test that’s sent to a lab, not an at l home Rapid Lateral Flow test. You can book a PCR test online l at www.nhs.uk/coronavirus or by calling 119. l l l l

37

If you have difficulties communicating or hearing: The above service is available via textphone on 18001 119 and the NHS 119 British Sign Language (BSL) interpreter service at www.signvideo.co.uk/nhs119

l Stay at home until you receive your PCR test results: you l must isolate if your PCR results are positive. l Medical advice: If you need advice about your symptoms use l the NHS 111 COVID-19 service at 111.nhs.uk/covid-19, or call l 111 if you can’t get online. l Prescriptions: If you require a prescription whilst you are l isolating, order it through the NHS App, or via your usual l ordering process with your GP practice. By taking a PCR test and staying at home as soon as you begin to show symptoms, you’re helping to prevent the spread of COVID-19. Self-isolating can be difficult, so make sure to look after your mental health by doing things that you enjoy. This could be watching your favourite TV shows, reading a good book, listening to your favourite music or catching up with loved ones via video call. Hull City - with Woody Mellor

Parallel Universe Hull City fans are in a strange parallel universe until there is a conclusion to the takeover saga which has publicly dragged on throughout the season and first began last May apparently. As things stand the prospective owner Acun Illicali announced that he had bought Hull City live on Turkish TV in the week before Christmas. We were apparently just waiting the Football League to ratify this before Christmas, before new year or at latest before the Everton cup game last night as this was broadcast live on BBC1 and a great opportunity for a media mogul to announce himself to the British public and his followers in Turkey. We can just hope that this can be finalised next week as we head into the second week in January.

As things stand Grant McCann is still manager, this may change but he is continuing as normal. The club are still under a transfer embargo so we are linked with two

free transfers and Regan Slater once again. At the same time as this the club could still be tempted to cash in on Keane Lewis-Potter, Jacob Greaves or others who impressed on TV last night such as George Honeyman. Until the ownership change is signed off there is always that fear that yet again it could collapse for some reason as the Allam’s throw in late changes or the buyers fail the fit and proper person test. Whilst this is what the current manager is trying to do with his hands financially tied we have had daily updates on City’s interest and alleged deals for a range of foreign players no one has really heard of. City have been linked with a Kosovan forward playing for Lazio, an American fullback, Japanese midfielder and a multitude of Turkish players. How true these rumours are, we are yet to see. It has also been suggested that some of the deals could be for loan agreements initially. The owner may not have the money or wish to speculate at present but maybe if these players prove themselves and City build up momentum for a promotion push next season, they may commit to signings for eight to ten million Euros. The ever so thorny issue of the stadium and SMC has yet to be clarified with the Council. The Stadium Management Company transfer is apparently part of the deal but apparently the council have not met the new owner to discuss the stadium and a new lease agreement. One can hope this will be arranged after the sale but to run Hull City you need access to the stadium besides owning the club name and its players. Fingers crossed that this

is not a sticking point to any deal despite the Allam’s disregard to Hull City Council despite being their tenants. As to on-field matters the team has performed far better with the new 3-5-2 formation over the past month. This was forced onto McCann after losing all his fullbacks but the club pulled away from the relegation positions during December though they have lost the last three matches If we include the Everton game. If McCann plays this formation with the addition of some team strengthening they may have a fighting chance of survival but you half expect him to revert to his beloved 4-3-3 as soon as he can, he may not have the skills to incorporate Internationals into his formations or planning and Illicali has been linked with both Georgian and Turkish managers over the past few weeks. We saw the players commitment and unity over the past month and would a new foreign manager and a range of Internationals disrupt what they have? If the takeover is completed than the ball is in Illicali’s court, he could gamble

either way, strengthen what we have at the midway point of the campaign or make bigger changes and hope for immediate results. City are only four points above the relegation positions so one way or another they need to pick up points during January during this time of transition. Thankfully it wasn’t too chaotic getting into the ground with Covid passports yesterday, volunteers checked for vaccination cards or the passport app at the railway bridge but the Boxing Day cancellation was shambolic when the match was called off at 1pm. Blackburn fans were already in Hull, fans were already in the pubs and others thinking of setting off early to show the relevant documentation to get in. City informed the EFL that they had a number of players with the virus three days in advance and it would appear that the EFL and Sky must have been very reluctant to cancel this game. City were allegedly asked to bring in academy players to make up their match day squad which also brings up the question of fairness. City could have been humiliated at home to Blackburn with a team of teenagers forced to play just to ensure Sky had a fixture, though City would have pocketed the TV payment. As things stand the takeover could be completed next week and let’s just hope this is the new beginning for Hull City? I’m sure Acun Illicalli, just like the Allam’s before him will say all the right things about the fans, ambition, ticket prices and signings. Let’s just hope this takeover happens once and for all and by the next column we will know more about who is managing, who is in the team, who may have departed and hopefully the team are not in a relegation position as survival is the main priority for this season. A Happy, Healthy and Prosperous New Year to you all. - Woody Mellor

Gardening

Create a wildlife-friendly garden in 2022 Wildlife can make its home in our gardens in many different ways. There are lots of things we can do, from planting to maintenance, that will make them as welcome as possible. . A home for nature

Making our gardens wildlife friendly doesn’t necessarily mean that we have to leave them to grow into wild jungles. Every space, whether it’s a huge estate or a busy family garden, can give a home to nature. There are lots of simple things we can do to help the animals we share a space with, from making sure that they have access to different habitats, to nurturing well-stocked feeding grounds for them. A wildlife friendly garden is accessible to everyone whatever space we’ve got, whether we’re maintaining an established garden, or creating a new one altogether.

Here are some key factors for a great wildlife-friendly garden. Habitats

Even the smallest of gardens can offer up a huge variety of different habitats for wildlife. There are lots of ways we can introduce, or let nature create, a diverse range of homes for nature in our outdoor spaces.

Even woodpiles, compost and trimmings, the decomposing and discarded off-cuts from your garden, can be incredible places for animals to live, feed and hibernate. Our gardens can be busy worlds of wildlife heaving with nature.

To breed and shelter It’s good to create as many habitats as possible without cramming too much in. Think about the space you have available and focus on making these microhabitats as good as they can be. You may not even realise that some of the most common unassuming garden features can house thriving worlds of wildlife. Lawns for example, especially areas of un-cut long grass, are an important habitat for all sorts of insects and minibeasts, not to mention a feasting ground for the hungry birds which feed on them. Borders, filled with flowering plants and shrubs, give nectar rich food to butterflies and bees, as well as seeds, berries and cover for birds and small mammals. Trees, and hedges offer roosting and nesting sites for birds and mammals, as well as valuable shelter and cover from the elements and possible predators. Ponds and water features can be a habitat for a huge variety of animal life, from amphibians and invertebrates to bathing garden birds.

A basic need for all wildlife is somewhere safe to breed and shelter. A garden can give this in many ways to many things. Growing climbers against walls can provide brilliant shelter, as well as roosting and breeding sites for birds. Trees, bushes and hedgerows can also be great havens for the bird world, as well as small mammals like hedgehogs. As a place for cover from predators and a safe spot to build a nest, these can be invaluable. Providing bird boxes, bat boxes and hedgehog homes can be a great way of introducing good artificial shelters into nature. Natural roosting and nesting sites can be increasingly hard for animals to find and our gardens give us the chance to give them an ongoing safe alternative. Butterflies need breeding sites too, and growing the right plants can give them a place to breed and lay their eggs. Honesty and hedge garlic can be good for orange tip butterflies and buckthorn bushes are favourites for breeding brimstones. Dead wood, trimmings and old foliage can be a valuable hiding place for beetles and other insects and minibeasts, as well as fungi and moss. Leaving areas of grass to grow wild can give all sorts of wildlife a place to hide and breed. If you are looking to cut back overgrown areas, or untidy borders, wait until late winter or early spring, to give any minibeasts sheltering from the cold winter month the chance to move on.

To forage and feed

Another essential feature of a wildlife friendly garden is a variety of places for the different animal residents to forage and feed. Of course, we can provide food for some of them, such as birds and hedgehogs, but there are lots of ways which we can help nature provide too.

January 2022

Get Your Business Noticed

A range of plants which flower and seed at varied times throughout the year, will provide food for the animals and insects that are active and feeding over different periods. Berry bushes and fruit trees will give another source of valuable and irresistible seasonal food. Ivy is a great source of autumn nectar for insects and late winter fruit for birds. An array of colourful nectar-rich flowers will attract bees, wasps, butterflies and other insects. If you create a garden which is full of minibeasts and insects, you’re also providing wealthy feeding ground for insect-eating birds, grub-hungry chicks and minibeasteating mammals like hedgehogs and bats!

A source or clean safe water is as important as food, whether it’s a larger pond or a small dish. One of the best things you can do to help butterflies and moths, is to make sure their caterpillars have the right plants to feed on. A variety of different host plants will attract a more varied range of butterflies and caterpillars. Thinking sustainably So many of our actions have an impact on wildlife which goes beyond our gardens, and it’s important for us to think about this when choosing materials and creating our spaces. Peat extraction destroys vital habitats, so avoid using peat and find alternative forms of compost. Give the tap a rest and save rainwater in water-butts and barrels. Pond-life will much prefer natural rain water if you need to top up your water features. When planting native plants, ensure they are of genuine native stock and not of continental origin. Also, ensure ‘wild flowers’ have been cultivated from legally collected seed and not dug-up from the wild. Replace pesticides with non-toxic, non-chemical alternatives.

FIONA’S FOOD FOR THOUGHT

By Fiona Dwyer - Journalist, PR Consultant, DIY Your Biz PR Course Creator, Wife & Mum to two teenagers! IS IT 2022 ALREADY?

Happy New Year everyone! How are you feeling? We are again starting a year with continuing uncertainty around Covid, how Omicron will affect us and how it will further stretch our NHS and emergency services. It’s nearly 2 years since the first case of coronavirus was confirmed in the UK and it still seems unbelievable to be living in such times. The vaccine rollout has been successful and we’re all having booster jabs – so hopefully we are as protected as we can be. I know everyone’s fed up with restrictions and mask-wearing, but if it protects just one person, saves one life, then I’m happy to do it. And if it means businesses in the hospitality and tourism sectors (as well as many others) can get back on their feet, then that’s got to be a good thing. At the time of writing, we are still waiting to hear about any further restrictions to be imposed post-Christmas. It seems likely there will be some kind of circuit break, mainly to take the pressure of the hospitals. Let’s hope it doesn’t last too long and doesn’t affect schools and charities too much either.

TOO BUSY TO ENJOY LIFE?

Why is it that as you get older, time passes faster?!! I think sometimes we are all so busy we forget to live our lives and so this year, that is my resolution. Yes, I am still going to work really hard in my business but I need to take time out to do more fun stuff and to relax. I’m not very good at relaxing! I always feel guilty that I’m not doing something else. Are you like that? So, my new schedule for 2022 has time set aside for me to chill out and enjoy. What are you going to do? Have you made a New Year’s resolution? Whatever it is, set a realistic goal. Don’t set yourself up to fail. If it is a fairly big thing, break it down into little, bite-size chunks so it’s not so daunting! Remember, life is precious and you matter too, so make sure you look after yourself!

QUOTES TO INSPIRE YOU IN 2022

I love a good quote, so here are a few I wanted to share with you as we start the New Year! “In order to be successful in the New Year, stay focused, develop a positive attitude and be passionate with your dreams.” Bamigboye Olurotimi “You are never too old to reinvent yourself!” Steve Harvey “I hope you realize that every day is a fresh start for you. That every sunrise is a new chapter in your life waiting to be written.” Juansen Dizon I wish you all good health and happiness for 2022. Stay safe and stay positive. Take care,

Beverley... If you make one new year’s resolution in 2022...

Get your COVID-19 and booster jabs, if you can. Ventilate to help keep the virus out of your home

Continue to wash your hands regularly with soap and water

Wear a face covering (unless exempt)

Do a rapid lateral flow test before periods of high risk

Be mindful and give others space

If you do have symptoms or feel unwell, stay at home and order a PCR test by visiting gov.uk/get-coronavirus-test or calling 119. Let’s keep life moving... Let’s keep our loved ones safe. Prevent. Notice. Act. Visit eastriding.gov.uk/3stepstosafety

Know your risk and be socially responsible if interacting with others
