Ahead of the Budget later this year, we’re asking beer drinkers and pub goers to take action to save our pubs from sinking. While it’s the publicans and brewers that pay the tax bills, it’s ultimately consumers like you who will pay the price as publicans and brewers are forced to put up prices or go bust. Typically when you spend £4 on a pint of beer in a pub.... 15p is business rates 49p is beer tax 67p is VAT And a further 15p is other taxes Pubs are vital to our local communities, our economy, and to the British way of life. However, they are struggling to stay afloat under the heavy burden of tax including beer duty and business rates. Tax now makes up more than a third of the cost of a pub pint! FROM THE EDITOR - BERNIE CAWTE Welcome to the 101st editon of Pub Mirror, in which we are building up to our 39th Hull Real Ale & Cider Festival. The festival will be our first in the renovated Holy Trinity or as we should now call it Hull Minster. As it’s the first in the new format of the church it will be a bit of a learning curve for us all. The good news is that we will have over 130 different beers to choose from, 30 plus cider and perry choices and 20/30 different bottled/canned beers from around the world. We look forward to welcoming you there. Food stalls are the same as last year and music will be provided by local acoustic performers and the RCM choral group. This year there will be an entrance charge on both the Thursday and Friday all day. This is to keep the general beer pricing down to last year’s levels and to pay for the extra security arrangements we need to make to fall in line with the current security guidelines. The entrance charge will include your free festival guide and your £1 refundable glass deposite. If you bring any large bags please be aware they may be subject to a security check. CAMRA members will still be free to enterat all times, subject to capacity. Entry ill be free to ll on Saturday.

HULL PUBS REPORT BY JON MAJOR Where has the year gone? I can't believe we're in the last four months of the year and as usual the last few months have seen great things happening in our great city. I am still trying to get around as many pubs as I can but as usual if you know of any changes to any Hull pubs please let me know. One thing I did fail to mention in my last report is that the Albert Hotel on Anlaby Road has now added two hand pulled ales, and I believe this is the first time these have been sold in The Albert. Well done to Phill Shannon for introducing these. The first time I visited both ales were from Wold Top but I know now he is also using Gene Pool Brewery, so he is a great supporter of LocAle Abbey Hotel on Coronation Road North is under new management and has one changing real ale. Let's wish Sue Richardson all the very best in her first venture as licensee. Admiral of the Humber has now reopened after a vast refurbishment, they have now added hotel bedrooms and a superb rooftop terrace. On the opening night they supported a local brewery, Gene Pool had a mini tap takeover (see below) and a meet the brewer night offering four ales from their range.
A new pub Wingfield Farm is now open on the Hessle roundabout close to the Humber Bridge. Although very much a food led pub it sells two permanent Greene King ales (IPA &

Abbott) plus one rotating local guest ale from the Great Newsome range. This pub is proving very popular. Savoy pub on Savoy Road are now selling real ale and are mainly from the Great Newsome or Gene Pool Brewery, another pub supporting LocAle. Holderness Hotel, Witham has now reopened after a lengthy period of closure. Licensee Carl Grunnill and his business partner, who are both ex forces have put a lot of work into improving the interior as well as the once award winning beer garden. They are hoping to make this one of Hull's premier music venues. Pub of the Year Whalebone held its first real ale & cider festival last month which proved to be a roaring success. Landlord Jamie Reading said sales exceeded all expectations and expressed his heartfelt thanks to all who supported this event and in particular to his 7 staff who worked incredibly hard to make this the success it was. The festival included 21 different types of real ales which also included local ales and 13 different ciders and perries. In addition to his usual 7 hand pulled pumps Jamie added a further 10 hand pumps to the bar. I'm sure this is not the last we see of these festivals at the Whalebone. This is always great news to report of a new bar opening, so welcome to the Vintage Bar. A one room bar, tastefully decorated giving it a relaxed country bar style feel in the centre of the Old Town, is on the site of the Fearnley’s jewellers on Silver Street, adjacent to Ye Olde White Harte. Currently the bar has three hand pulled ales on but are planning to add another two in September, at least one of these new additions will be from a local brewery. HOLDERNESS PUBS REPORT BY BRIAN JOHNSON I would like to start this article with a pub that many of you will not have heard of let alone visited.
Anyway, the good news is that Stewart is offering 10% discount to card carrying CAMRA members so well worth a visit.
The Burns Head in Patrington Haven is a 250-year-old pub that was once on the river which ran between Holderness and Sunk Island, long since left high and dry by the silting up of the river but it was once a dropping off point for the sailors who plied their trade up and down the river Humber. Fast forward to the present day, it has recently been purchased by Steven and Jill Curwen and over the last few months they have transformed the place though, as they admit there is still a lot to do. On the 4th and 5th of August they held a beer and cider festival and I was fortunate to be able to attend on both days along with my wife and some friends. One of the main things that stood out was the variety of real cider that was on offer and while I am not really a cider drinker at only ÂŁ3 a pint for up to 6% ABV I could not resist sampling some. The ale was also on top form with a Somerset ale called Uncle Tom and Waggle Dance. They are going to repeat this again over the bank holiday weekend but at any time it is well worth a visit
The Victoria in Hornsea has finally got new a new manager Lesley Ellis when I visited they did not have any cask ale and were trying to decide what they could sell. But I know they want to sell it so watch this space Lastly the Stackhouse Bar is to hold its 2nd Hornsea beer festival in the Museum Gardens this time I am assured it is going to be bigger and even better than last year It will run from the 8th to 10th of September and coincides with the Hornsea area GBG survey trip on the 10th . Another change is that the Black Horse (above) in Atwick has a new land lord Stewart Shepherd finally took over from Brian Thompson a few weeks ago when I visited he had been in charge for about an hour unfortunately I missed the chance to say cheerio to Brian although I do know he was desperate to get out to his family in Spain.

EAST YORKSHIRE PUBS REPORT BY MARK BAINTON Lord Nelson, Flemingate, Beverley - Neil Pickford, having rescued the Monks Walk from obscurity last year, has been handed the keys of this Grade II listed building dating back at least to the 17th century. Neil hopes to restore the pub's fortunes to that of community local, opening late August.
Design Awards. In Flamborough the Seabirds is up for sale. Londesborough Arms in Market Weighton is holding their 2nd festival. 10 ales available.On 23rd September, starting at noon and finishing when all the beer goes. Food (savouries) supplied by a local butcher. Coverforce a band from York will be playing from 20.30.
Woolpack Inn, Beverley - Popular landlady Fliss has decided not to renew her tenancy of this Marston's tied house and expects to leave by October. We wish her well for the future. Cross Keys, Beverley - Following the return of Emma from maternity leave (congratulations), classic beers such as Spitfire and Exmoor Stag have made an appearance on the bar. Board Inn, Bridlington - The Branch has submitted this superbly restored building in the Refurbishment category of CAMRA's Pub
The Hase, Hessle has Timothy Taylor’s Boltmaker as a standing beer plus one of the Wells Bombardier/Black Sheep style of larger regional brewers, in the last couple of months, they have added a rotating guest beer from smaller breweries - e.g. Abbeydale Moonshine, Osset Silver King. LOCALE SCHEME EXPLAINED CAMRA LocAle is an initiative which promotes pubs stocking locally brewed real ale. The scheme builds on a growing consumer demand for quality local produce and an increased awareness of ‘green’ issues. Everyone benefits from local pubs stocking locally brewed real ale… • Public houses as stocking local real ales can increase pub visits • Consumers who enjoy greater beer choice and diversity • Local brewers who gain from increased sales • The local economy because more money is spent and retained locally • The environment due to fewer ‘beer miles’ resulting in less road congestion and pollution • Tourism due to an increased sense of local identity and pride - let’s celebrate what makes our locality different. Participating pubs are granted accreditation at the discretion of the local branch, Hull & East Yorkshire CAMRA, and subject to the licensee agreeing that they will endeavour to ensure at one locally brewed real ale, as defined by 12 least the local branch, is on sale at all times and that only real ale, as defined by CAMRA, can be promoted as a CAMRA LocAle.
The Definition of Local: For the purpose of the Hull & East Yorkshire scheme pubs would have to stock a beer from either an East Yorkshire brewery or from a brewery within 25 miles of the pub. Real ales from regional and national breweries as well as from microbreweries can be regarded as “local”, if they are brewed within what the branch has deemed to be the local area. MEMBERSHIP REPORT BY TONY GARRETT Why Join CAMRA and why get involved? From the Branch Membership Secretary Real ale is the product of a natural process and is an artisan craft. Indeed, it is truly craft ale, result in a continuing living and developing product. CAMRA has a diverse membership, but is particularly interested at the moment in recruiting and engaging with members under 30 – after all, younger people are the future of the campaign. We now have a young member’s representative on the branch committee in Alan Bowler and he wants to encourage more people in the 18-30 age group to join. If you are between 18 and 30 years old and interested in keeping real ale on the bars of Hull and East Yorkshire, consider the benefits below that you will receive through a CAMRA membership. If you are under 26, you benefit from a reduced subscription rate, but still get all the benefits. Joining makes sense! FOLLOW THE TIGERS ON THE AMBER TRAIL We are pleased to continue our long association with the Tigers’ Official Supporters Club (we are now in our 6th Year) and suggest some real ale pubs near the grounds. Most of these pubs will be in CAMRA’s Good Beer Guide, so I hope you enjoy the real ales/ cider on offer. if you come across ay other pubs, especially away friendly pubs, please let us know at pubmirror@hull.camra.org.uk DERBY COUNTY – Sat 9th September (KO 15.00) Turn right out of the station and make your way down to the Brunswick Inn (DE1 2RU), 1 Railway Tavern. This pub reopened in 1987 and a purpose built brewery was added later. Now owned by Everards, it is the model for the company’s project backing micro-brewers. Busy on match days, a GBG 2017 pub. The second choice is the Victoria Inn, (DE1 2RR) 12 Midland Place, locally known as the ‘Vic’ is situated on Midland Place just across the road from Derby’s Railway Station. The walls of the bar depict the long history of the bands that have performed in the music venue at the back of the pub, 2 regular beers. FULHAM – Tuesday 12th September (KO 19:45) A couple to note - the first being the Eight Bells (SW6 3JS), 89 Fulham High St, has a wonderful atmosphere. This is a traditional pub with hanging plates and horrible carpet, just as they should be! This is a ‘real’ English pub - no gastro-pub here. The other is a CAMRA recognised pub the White Horse (pictred right), (SW6 4UL), 1-3 Parsons Green, a GBG 2017 pub which normally have guest ales from regional and microbreweries, 18 six a draught Severn cider or perry and unusual foreign beers, with a claimed 135 bottled beers stocked. The pub can get busy, but there is an upstairs area to get away from the crowds. READING – Saturday 23rd September (KO 15.00) A GBG 2017 pub the Swan (RG7 1AT) Basingstoke Road, is the nearest pub to the ground. A grade II listed 17th century pub with an inglenook fireplace, serves 6 real ales. If you are travelling by train you could try the Nags Head, (RG1 7XD) 5 Russell Street, just off the busy Oxford Road, about a mile from the ground. With the wide range of real ales, real cider and perry the Nag’s Head always has on offer, visitors can be sure to find something to their tastes here. Their dedication to quality has made them a regular finalist (and multiple winner) of the local CAMRA Pub of the Year and Cider Pub of the Year awards, GBG 2017. NORWICH CITY – Saturday 14th October (KO 15.00) The main pub for away fans is the Compleat Angler , pictured right, (NR1 1NS) 120 Prince of Wales Road, opposite the railway station. Large wooden-floored pub opposite the railway and yacht stations, with pretty riverside terraces and a downstairs area.. Good value food is served all day until 8pm. The pub is the designated away fans pub, so can be crowded on match days. FOLLOW THE TIGERS ON THE AMBER TRAIL BARNSLEY – Saturday 21st October (KO 15.00) Dove Inn, pictured right, (S70 1TP), 102 Doncaster Road is a 2017 GBG pub. This is an Old Mill Brewery pub which is a warm bright, welcoming house with plenty of outside space in the rear paved beer garden and veranda which overlooks Oakwell Stadium. Both home and away fans meet up here, where the corner bar serves a public bar with pool table to the left and TV area to the right. Another 2017 GBG pub is Silkstone Inn (S70 1SN) 64 Market Street, This 700th outlet for J.D. Wetherspoon has a coal theme (The Silkstone Seam stretched under Barnsley) even down to the black pendants in the lights and the secluded nature of the lighting with the usual Wetherspoon beers. SHEFFIELD UNITED – Saturday 4th November (KO 15.00) The nearest pub to the ground is Railway Hotel (S2 4RF) 184 Bramall Lane, a small traditional pub that has recently been refurbished, consists of three distinct areas - bar, pool table and lounge with a number of tables in the lounge having retro video games built in. The five real ales on the bar regularly change; they also keep a large selection of bottled world beers. See Sheffield - General for more pubs. SHEFFIELD - GENERAL There are 8 pubs in the centre of the City and another 22 from the outskirts in the 2017 GBG. The best place to start (and possible finish) is the Sheffield Tap, pictured right, (S1 2BP), Platform1b, Sheffield Station. This was originally the first class refreshment room for Sheffield Midland Station with16 real ales or more on offer from local Sheffield breweries. Snacks are available but no main meals. If you have time there is the renowned Kelham Island district (S3 post codes) with 4 CAMRA 2017 GBG entries, Fat Cat (8SA), Harlequin (8GG), Kelham Island Tavern (8RW), and Shakespeare’s Ale and Cider House (8UB)

MILLWALL - Saturday 21st November (KO 15.00) The reputation of Millwall fans probably isn’t wholly deserved but it is best to stay away from the local pubs and bars. It is probably best to have a beer or two around the London Bridge railway station before going on to the Den. The Barrowboy and Banker SE1 9QQ) 6/8 Borough High Street, is a long standing regular CAMRA nominated pub with plenty of real ale always on offer plus good quality bar meals. SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY - 2nd December (KO 15.00) Near to the ground is the Hillsborough, (S6 2UB), 54-58 Langsett Road, Privately owned 4* hotel with six en-suite rooms. Provides beer from a wide range of independent breweries, serving 2 regular and 5 changing ales. See Sheffield General (above) for more pubs. KEEP PUBS AFLOAT In the Spring Budget the Chancellor announced two schemes which relate to or can relate to pubs: the Business Rate Relief Scheme for Pubs and the Discretionary Relief Scheme. In business rate information letters to local authorities, dated 9th March 2017 and 22nd June 2017, the Department for Communities and Local Government has laid out how the relief schemes should be implemented by local authorities and also indicated that all areas should have begun delivering the relief schemes by the end of June. However local councils have been slow to implement these schemes while some pubs continue to struggle with increased rates bills. Research from by the Association of Licensed Multiple Retailers couldn’t find evidence of any local council having implemented the £1,000 relief, and very few councils had made progress on the discretionary relief fund.

The latest revaluation of business rates has seen pubs in Yorkshire and the East Riding and across England hit with a massive new financial burden, which in some cases could only be covered by them selling thousands of extra pints of beer every year. If these

overburdened licensees can’t increase trade, they have no choice but to put up prices for consumers, or shut the pub. Colin Valentine, CAMRA’s National Chairman says: “Taxes now make up more than a third of the cost of a pub pint. Despite the fact that pubs currently account for 0.5% of turnover of the UK economy, they are still paying 2.8% of the business rates. This is frankly unsustainable, and it is the consumer that will ultimately pay the price - whether it's when their beloved local closes down or when the price of their pint goes up.” Why not support the campaign by contacting your local council, CAMRA members can go on to the National website and find further information. WELCOME TO TWO MORE Vintage Silver Street, Hull This is always great news to report of a new bar opening especially when it is a real ale bar. I've been lucky enough to make reports on several new bars in Hull this year and I'm sure this one will join the others as a great visit on our ever expanding ale trail.
Vintage Bar, which is a one room bar, tastefully decorated giving it a relaxed country bar style feel in the centre of the old town is on the site of the former Fearnley’s jewellers and adjacent to Ye Olde White Harte. The property was bought by Mike Beswick earlier this year and he has worked on it throughout the year to get it to where it is now. Mike, who is originally from Ashton under Lyne has spent 14 years in the licensed trade working at pubs throughout the country. He has been settled in Hull for 7 years now and is a great supporter of Hull's City of Culture status and a firm advocate of real ale.
Centurion Arms, Brough Another new micro pub in the area is the Centurion Arms in Brough. The pub is located in a small shopping precinct on Skillings Lane.
Presently there are 4 real ale pumps available which serve regularly changing ales from throughout the local area including our LocAle brewers. Mark and Debbie, the licensees may be familar to those of you who have been around the local scene for a while as they were the owners of the now defunct Big River brewery. Does that mean a comeback for the brewery we ask?
The pub also has some craft beers including the very popular Brass Castle Hellas lager. Wines and spirits are also available.
Currently the bar has three hand pulled ales on but he is planning on adding another two in September, at least one of these new additions will be from a local brewery. (Jon Major)

The opening of this micropub brings the total of real ale bars in Brough to four, which means it would be well worth an afternoon or evening out to sample the beers on offer in the Centurion Arms and elsewhere pubs in Brough. The others are Red Hawk, Ferryboat Inn and Buccaneer all with at least two real ales on offer. (Bernie Cawte)

GBBF DAY OUT BY JOHN CLARK I arrived at King’s Cross on Hull Trains at 11.05 on Thursday 10th August to visit the Great British Beer Festival. After an age getting tube tickets (will get them in advance next time) I travelled on the Piccadilly Line to Barons Court, probably the nearest station to Olympia. Then I stood in a good natured queue for twenty minutes before admittance to the venue, a voluminous building with plenty of seating, including a balcony area.

I then walked to Soho to visit two other pubs, firstly The Clachan on Kingly Street, an establishment that was exhibiting an interior from an 1898
An almost dizzying choice of beers were on offer, all of them I noticed on handpump. Suffice to say, these were some of the excellent ales I tried: Tiny Rebel’s Full Nelson, Brass Castle Misfit, Swannay (Orkney Islands) Scapa Special, Windsor & Eton’s Uprising Treason, Redemption Big Chief and from the International Bar, Roadrunner IPA from the Blue Corn Brewery of Nebraska and the Aeronaut Brewery of Massachusetts Lydia’a Black Heart. The strong ones I tried in thirds and the rest in halves. refurbishment and had many interesting features. These included engraved glasswork, mirrors, mahogany wood fittings and a very ornate ceiling. I thought this very impressive. Here I had a very good half of London Pride
The choice of food was also very good with a wide range of pies, burgers, curries, Mexican dishes etc. Thursday at the festival was Hat Day, with Admiral type headgear, a Stetson, a Dr.Seuss stripey tall hat and one guy who had a lighthouse hat with revolving light! After that enjoyable visit I decided to have a little pub crawl on my way back to Kings Cross, via a tube trip to Green Park, also on the Piccadilly Line. This was to visit the Red Lion in Duke Street, which is a wonderfully preserved pub, originally built in 1821, which is in CAMRA’s National Inventory of pubs of national importance. What a gem this is, with sparkling

The second pub a short distance away in Soho was on Argyll Street, the eponymously named Argyll Arms. This is also on CAMRA’s list of pubs on national importance and well worth a visit, for its three snugs, separated by etched glasswork and also the intricately decorated Bass mirror. The bar back was also fascinating as was the saloon bar with its ornate mirrors. These features from 1895, show once again how wonderful that era was for the building of characterful pubs. My half here was the tasty Adnam’s Ghost Ship, but there was a choice of another seven ales in this remarkable pub. Finally, I popped in Bree Louise, a pub near to Euston station for one last half from the many ones to choose from, before making my way to Kings Cross for my journey back home on Hull Trains.

GBG SURVEY TRIP TO WITHERNSEA BY BRIAN JOHNSON My first GBG survey trip of the year to the Withernsea area started in traditional fashion, the coach was late! We were eventually on our way to our first stop Amy’s Bar &Kitchen in Patrington, where some of our party also made a quick visit to the Holderness Inn and the Hildyard Arms so as not to overfill Amy’s bar. We were given a very warm welcome by the owner Lee Fash and his staff, the beers were on good form especially the Salopian Lemon Dream. Unfortunately only Carol got to try that as the barrel came to an end on the very next pint. Other ales on offer were Tetley’s Bitter, St Austell Proper Job, Sharps Atlantic and Morland Old Golden Hen; the ales are varied and changing so expect something different every time you visit. There are also around eight real ciders some of which were Farmer Jim’s Rhubarb, Lilly the Pink and Moonshine.

On leaving Patrington we went down to Welwick to visit the Coach and Horses (above) again an excellent choice of ales and we spent some time in the beer garden enjoying the sunshine and company as well as good beer. Those on sale that day were, Brass Castle Northern Blonde, Great Newsome Finkle and Elderflower Power, John Smiths Bitter and Chestnut Mild, but these also change quite regularly

Going on to Withernsea to the Old Boat Shed were we also enjoyed a warm welcome excellent ales and the chance to get some fish and chips. Here also the beers are varied and whilst they usually have one or two Great Newsome ales available on this occasion the beers were Titanic Plum Porter, Isaac Poad 84, Olive Branch from Mr.Grundy’s brewery in Derby and Old Leg Over from Daleside. They also sell a number of real ciders which I am told are delicious. Our final visit was to the Aldborough and the George and Dragon (below) a first time for many of the group and to be honest I was a little concerned as to how people would react but everyone seemed happy with the venue and soon in conversation with the locals and I had to just about prise people out to get them on the coach for home. The beers on sale that day were Black Sheep Bitter, Banks Mild and John Smiths Cask
Then back up to Hollym to the Plough Inn a pub that is in the 2017 GBG and for many years had been a CAMRA Pub of the Year once again the ales were of great quality and we enjoyed a pleasant hour there The beers on sale were Half Moon Brewery Magna Hull and East Yorkshire CAMRA

yorkshire club of the year 2017 The Wortley Men’s Club in Wortley has been named ‘Yorkshire Club of the Year 2017’ and is now celebrating a run of FOUR consecutive wins after also taking the prestigious title in 2014, 2015, and 2016. Wortley is a village that is just over 8 miles away from Barnsley in South Yorkshire. The club is described in the CAMRA Good Beer Guide 2017 as: “Set in the pretty rural village of Wortley, near Wortley Hall and gardens. The opulent building features exposed timber frames, ornate ceilings, wooden panelling and a real fire. CAMRA’s Yorkshire Regional Director, Kevin Keaveny, said “This fourth win in a row shows the club’s continued commitment to high standards. It also shows that a club in a village can thrive if the management offer the members the products, facilities, and level of service that they require.” The Oakworth Social Club in Oakworth was the Runner–up in the competition. The club is situated on Chapel Lane in the village. The club is described on CAMRA’s What?ub online pub and club guide as “Friendly and welcoming, an imposing Victorian building on the main thoroughfare. Originally built as the Liberal Club in the late 19th century, it has a comfortable lounge style front bar, with another bar serving room at the back with traditional games and TV. There is a third upstairs bar and function room.”

PUBS PRESERVATION SOCIETY Assets of Community Value (ACV) Those of you that read my article in the last edition of Pub Mirror will recall that, following the change in the law that meant any changes to a pub must have planning permission, CAMRA nationally decided to reduce or severely curtail their support for ACV nominations. While this is still the case the approach has now been clarified as follows: • CAMRA, at a national level, will only support branches which get involved in an ACV nomination where the local authority has specifically included a reference to ACV designated pubs in its local plan (as neither the Hull City Council; nor ERYC have done this there is no possibility of support for this branch from CAMRA nationally) • Local branches can continue to nominate pubs for ACV status but this must be done at their own cost in terms of time, effort and the purchase of the necessary documents. The Hull & East Yorkshire branch has formally 32 agreed that it will continue to support such nominations where local residents show a commitment to purchasing a pub in the event that it is offered for sale. • Local residents, parish councils and other designated bodies can still nominate pubs in their own right and any group wishing to do so can still contact me at the e-mail address in the contacts section of Pub Mirror for help and advice on the process. Planning Applications There have been quite a number of pub related applications since the last edition of Pub Mirror and those of significance are listed below
rumours and gossip the application specifically confirms the worst fears of those villagers and other regulars that this ACV designated pub is now considered surplus to requirements by its owners EI (Enterprise Inns) especially as they are currently in the process of refurbishing the nearby Fox & Coney. Pending Consideration 2. The Falling Stone, Thwing – Application for change of use to a dwelling including the demolition of existing extensions and outbuildings. a.This privately owned pub has been closed for the last two years and has been on sale for some time. The pub was designated an ACV but following a review the designation was withdrawn. The Parish Council complained informally to the officer responsible for the review decision and was informed verbally that a second nomination would achieve a favourable result. Despite this the second application was rejected out of hand. The branch and the parish council will now be submitting a formal complaint over the handling of the second ACV nomination.
East Riding of Yorkshire 1. The Bear, South Cave – Application to demolish part of the pub and build 5 dwellings on the car park and land to the rear. The application also states that the remaining part of the pub will be the subject of a future application to convert it into a retail unit. While it is not the place of this publication to repeat
b.The community have already secured a great deal of funding to enable them to buy refurbish and re-open the pub as a community facility providing more than just the normal pub facilities. However, the owner has set what the community consider a wholly inappropriate price based on their own independent valuation. The parish council have naturally objected to the application as has this branch

USEFUL INFORMATION REAL ALE V SMOOTH
What is Real Ale? Real Ale is a living beer. It continues to ferment and develop its full flavour in the cask. Real Ale is brewed from traditional ingredients, malt, hops, water and yeast matured by secondary fermentation in the container from which it is dispensed, and served without the extraneous use of carbon dioxide or nitrogen via hand pumps. Real Ale is also called cask beer or cask conditioned.

Examples of Traditional Handpumps What are ‘Smooth’ beers? Smooth beers are brewed in much the same way as real ale but eventually the natural yeast is killed and processed to give longer shelf life.

GREAT NEWSOME BREWERY TRIP We had a great start to the social , the people waiting at Hull Truck listened to a steel band. We had a mystery tour around East Holderness because of road works but we had a great time when we got there The sun was shining; a perfect day. Great Newsome had several of their beers on offer including Holderness Mild a dark beer, Liquorice Lad’s stout, Elderflower,Power Sleck Dust and Pricky Back bitter. There were plenty of games, quizes and singers around to keep us all occupied. Food wise there was a choice of burgers, Hull Pie and ice cream. The sunny weather made it a great day out. Procedes from the day went to the Daisy Appeal, a local charity From there we went to Easington and the Marquis of Granby where they had Tetley Bitter on offer. Some of the party went to the White Horse just around the corner Then we took the coast road to the George 36 and Dragon at Holmpton which again had Tetleys Bitter available. On to Withernsea and the new pub Captain Williams which is situated at the end of the North Marina. A couple of ales on were Sharps Atlantic and Doombar. We finished of at the Old Boat Shed before returning home, a great day was had by all.
About 10 members of CAMRA and 10 from the City Hotel took part in games galore with Chess, Darts, Pool, Table Skittles, Crib, Shoveha’ penny and dominoes highly contested. We had a £1 entry fee per game and prizes donated for the night by Tony from the Hop and Vine, and Steve and Carol from CAMRA. We had a platter of mixed food from Neil and he also put on a cask of Holderness Dark Mild, which was well recieved. The impossible quiz by Steve ran all night, with the winner getting only 9 ½ out of 20. The prize for the quiz was a well earned bottle of wine. to make sure no one went home empty handed the losers were awarded with a wooden spoon, which certainly added to the fun of the night. We made £70 00 for Dove House Hospice so thank you to all who took part, roll on next year’s event.

I first got into the wonderful tasty world of real ale a few years ago as my father and friends loved the real stuff. It wasn't long before I was travelling around from pub to pub and even reviewing the ales I sample. Wold Top Brewery’s Scarborough Fair IPA was named as a finalist in the Best Craft Beer category in the annual awards that celebrate the country’s home-grown ingredients and producers. The beer faces competition from 10 others from around the country and is one of just two Yorkshire beers to have made the shortlist of the awards that are organised by Great British Food magazine.

Wold Top Brewery’s Marmalade Porter took the accolade for the United Kingdom’s Best Porter as the World Beer Awards announced country winners following a day of judging in London recently. A panel of renowned international judges decided the best beers in each of the 72 styles of the beer awards which saw over 1,900 beers entered from 36 countries worldwide. All of the entries were blind tasted and scored over two rounds.

A ‘GENE’ FEAST BY JON MAJOR LOCAL HERO HONOURED WITH HIS OWN ALE
ROTHERHAM BRANCH FESTIVAL AWARD
Local Hull FC hero Danny Houghton, who helped bring the Rugby League Challenge Cup back to Hull last year was honoured last month with his very own ale.
These last few months have seen a several branches of CAMRA visiting our fair city. One in particular was Rotherham branch who came primarily to make an award to one of our local breweries, Gene Pool Brewery’s Paleo won Silver medal at their recent real ale & cider festival. Well done all at Gene Pool for this award and hopefully the first of many.
'Tackle 52' was named after Danny made his 52nd tackle of the match inches from the try line saving the game in the last few minutes. Five pubs were chosen to launch this with Danny travelling to each one. The pubs chosen were the Tiger Inn in Beverley, Albert Hotel on Anlaby Road, Hull (where he now has a mural on the pub wall of the try saving tackle), Hop & Vine, Albion Street, Dram Shop, George Street and Minerva. Hull Marina. In each pub Danny was invited to join the team behind the bar to pull the first pint.

Rotherham branch started off their visit at the brewery where they presented the award and toasted it with what else but a glass of Paleo. They went on to visit many hostelries around the Old Town before heading back for their train. 26/05/2017

THE THIRD OF SIX - EAST YORKSHIRE BY JON MAJOR Sunday 13th August; a lovely sunny day saw 19 of us boarding the bus at Hull Truck and making our way to our first port of call, The Ship at Dunswell, as usual a warm welcome awaited us and we had a choice of Morland Old Golden Hen, Bermuda Joes Pineapple ale and whoever had that would agree it is exactly what it says on the tin, Greene King IPA and Sharps Sea Fury. With it being such a lovely day most of us spent it on the pubs beautiful garden setting
Landlord, Tetley Cask, Wold Top Festival Series 4 and Greene King IPA. Unfortunately the manager didn't seem to understand what CAMRA was or what we did, after an eventful stop there we headed to our next call.
Wellington Inn (below) at Lund, I personally have always found this pub very clean and welcoming, they offered Timothy Taylor Landlord, Black Sheep's Golden Sheep and Theakston’s Best. Our next visit was a pub I've never been to before Black Horse (below) at Little Weighton, a nice village pub which offered Yorkshire Heart JRT Golden Best, Half Moon F'Hops Sake and Wold Top Anglers Reward.

Our last visit of the day was to the Michelin star award winning Pipe and Glass (below) at South Dalton they offered us Exit 33 Simcoe, Black Sheep, Wold Top Wold Gold and Two Chefs Honey Beer. It was a very pleasant stop to finish our day. I'm sure most on the trip would agree it was a very successful day and at times good to visit pubs we've never tried before.
Then onto last year’s Village Pub of the Year and one of my personal favourites Goodmanham Arms. Vito was his usual grand mine host and offered six guest ales and five from the All Hallows' Brewery, we knew the choice would be too good so we decided to spend a full hour sat in the sun here. Our fourth stop was another place I'd never been and so it seems most on the coach had never been to either, the Triton Inn at Sledmere, they offered four ales Timothy Taylor

A LIVERPOOL POINT OF VIEW On Saturday, 12th August, 40 intrepid members of Liverpool branch set off for their coach trip to Hull. It had been 4 years since our last branch visit, so we were all looking forward to it.
We duly arrived at Hull around noon, bang on time, and were met by Jon Major, who had very kindly helped out in the preceding week with pub details, and who was there to show some of us around. Jon went with many of our party to the Old Town, whereas myself and my 'entourage' (I feel like a pub tour guide at 44 times!) headed straight to the Minerva- one of our number had been a student in Hull during the late 80s/early 90s, and recalled drinking in that pub, so we started there for his old times' sake. I sampled an excellent pint of Kelham Island Full Nutty Jacket, just my kind of ale. From there, we headed back into town, looking for somewhere that had the football on (Liverpool was the early game), but also sold proper beer, unlike many of the places that were showing the game! We settled on Ye Olde Corn Exchange, a bit soulless and open plan inside but, importantly, had a good selection of beers on, I opted for Daleside Old Legover, an old favourite. However, as the match wasn't going in the Reds' favour at that point, we left at half time and continued our trail. Next up was Ye Olde White Harte, where everyone enthused about the interior and the history of the place. After a nice pint of the house beer, Hotham's Harte, we met another local branch member, Ian, as we were leavingHull and East Yorkshire CAMRA
and told him we were on our way elsewhere but would see him later (which we duly did, see later!), but that other members of our party were on their way there, so to make himself known to them. Next was the Lion and Key- well, for some of us, at least. A couple of our party considered it 'too foody' (they don't like the smell of food whilst supping), so they went straight to the Wm Hawkes, where we met up with them later. Of those of us that stayed, I had an excellent pint of Hilltop Classic Bitter, served by some very helpful staff (as they were in all the places we visited). After this, the short hop over the road to meet our companions, who were having the time of their lives in the Wm Hawkes! I have to agree, it was a fantastic pub, probably my favourite of the day- so much so that we stayed for a second pint (the ones who got there first had 3 or 4 in there!). Mine were another Hilltop beer, a superb Mild, and a Cathead Blonde, brewed just around the corner, of course. Whilst we were there, it got fairly crowded, as several other members of our coach party turned up, in separate groups, and they all seemed to enjoy the pub too.
Having to wrench ourselves away from the Wm Hawkes, our next stop was Chilli Devil's (above) a new micropub-cum-chilli emporium that I had not been to before. Four well-kept ales, my choice was a lovely Osset Chardonnayle, and the very friendly owner gave us a sample of their hot sauce, which had a kick to it but was also flavourful too! BY MATT VALENTINE from there he kindly escorted us to the Food and Drink Festival. There were a surprising number of real ale (as opposed to smoothflow or, shudder, lager) outlets, so I plumped for a rather good pint of Yorkshire Brewing Co Crazy Horse, a cracking pale ale, albeit in the regulation squishy plastic glass being open air! Decently-priced for such an event, too- in fact, prices overall seemed to have gone down considerably since my previous visit the year
before (maybe they had gone up in anticipation of the Capital of Culture shindig? Whatever the reason, I wasn't complaining!). Our last port of call was the Hop & Vine (left), an excellent cellar bar that I had visited on our last branch visit in 2013. Again, a few other members of our party were in there, so we joined them for one last pint before heading to the coach- in my case, Tom Wood's Bomber County. From there, we followed Ian to the coach park, and headed home after a great day out. On behalf of the branch, I would like to say thank you to Jon and Ian (and anyone else that I come across during our meanderings) for their help both on the day and beforehand.
