MISCELLANEOUS Last week, worldwide TOP partner Coca-Cola unveiled its “Move to the Beat” campaign for the Games in London in 2012. The Coca-Cola Company is working alongside GRAMMY award-winning producer Mark Ronson and chart-topping vocalist Katy B to fuse the sounds of Olympic sports with the beat of London music. Five young Olympic hopefuls will act as ambassadors for the Move to the Beat campaign. More info on www.olympic.org
INTERNATIONAL SPORTS FEDERATIONS SUMMER IFS The International Fencing Federation (FIE) has informed us that, during its meeting in Lausanne on 23 September, the FIE Executive Board took several decisions, including an initiative that will support and retain female fencing referees and provide them with the tools to excel and advance. The first refereeing course aimed specifically at women is planned to be held in November 2011 in Athens, Greece. The FIE has also informed us that its World Championships, which will be held from 8 to 16 October 2011 in Catania (Italy), will bring together 937 fencers from 113 countries. NATIONAL OLYMPIC COMMITTEES During a recent visit to Rio by a Swedish delegation, the Presidents of the Brazilian and Swedish NOCs, Carlos Arthur Nuzman (left of photo) and Stefan Lindeberg (right of photo) respectively, signed a cooperation agreement. Under the terms of this agreement, the NOCs will work in close cooperation to facilitate the establishment of strategic partnerships for the two NOCs, such as preparing and organising training camps. Exchanges between athletes of the two countries during bilateral or international competitions will thus be facilitated, as well as exchanges between coaches, staff members, referees and researchers, through seminars and training courses as well as meetings. The Swedish delegation was composed of the NOC President and Secretary General, as well as IOC member Gunilla Lindberg (centre of photo), and Swedish NOC sports directors Peter Reinebo and Glenn Östh. The NOC of France has informed us that, from 19 to 23 September, it hosted, for a week of training, the first eight volunteers selected to get involved with other NOCs in the framework of the “International Civic Service” project. Aged between 20 and 25, they were taught about the values of Olympism and were presented to the Administration Board by NOC President Denis Masseglia (photo). These young people will leave on 17 October for a six-to-eight-month trip around the world: from Burundi to Haiti, passing through Cameroon, Albania, Rwanda, the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia and Togo. The NOC of Georgia has told us that, a few weeks ago, the country’s capital, Tbilisi, hosted a meeting of the Eastern European Regional Anti-Doping Council (RADO) (photo). Among the participants were World Anti-Doping Agency Education and Development Director Rob Kohler, and leaders of anti-doping organisations from 12 countries (Albania, Serbia, Montenegro, the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Moldova, Ukraine, Russia, Belarus, Azerbaijan, Armenia and Georgia). The Council members followed up on a proposal by the Georgian Anti-Doping Agency (GADA) to host the RADO headquarters in the NOC headquarters in Tbilisi. GADA President Pavel Kasradze and Secretary General Teimuraz Ukleba, were appointed RADO President and Director General respectively. Information on www.geonoc.org.ge. The British Olympic Association and the NOC of Russia have signed an agreement identifying areas of mutual cooperation and strategic partnership in view of the Games in London in 2012 and Sochi in 2014. This agreement was signed at The White House in Moscow by Russian NOC President Alexander Zhukov and his British counterpart, Colin Moynihan. The British delegation also met representatives of the Organising Committee for the Sochi Games, who provided the latest news on preparations for the next Olympic Winter Games. With 300 days to go until the Opening Ceremony of the 2012 Games in London, the Hungarian Academy of Sciences hosted an international conference on the “The Olympics– Competition – Sports – Law” in Budapest. On the agenda of this conference were the competition law aspects of sport, as well as general subjects concerning sports law. The speakers included the President of the Hungarian Olympic Committee, Zsolt Borkai; State Secretary of Sport Attila Czene (photo); IOC member Richard Pound; and CAS Secretary General Matthieu Reeb. This conference was organised by the Hungarian NOC, the Hungarian Society of Sport Science, the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, the Sportjus Sport Law Association, the Pázmány Péter Catholic University and the International Fair Play Committee. Participants included representatives of several NOCs, including Qatar, Poland, Serbia, Montenegro, Luxembourg, Malta, Austria and Latvia. More information on www.olympic-hun.org. On 30 September, with 301 days to go before the start of the 2012 Games in London, the President of the Lithuanian NOC, Arturas Poviliunas (photo) signed the IOC’s official invitation to participate in these Games. At a ceremony held at the NOC headquarters, team member pins were awarded to the first athletes and coaches to qualify for these Games. The Lithuanian delegation’s uniforms were also officially presented on this occasion. The Olympians present were congratulated by MP Zilvinas Silgalis and the Deputy Director General of State Sport Department for Physical Education and Sport, Vytautas Vainys. Pentathlete Laura Asadauskaite spoke on behalf of the Lithuanian athletes.
ORGANISING COMMITTEES FOR THE OLYMPIC GAMES LONDON 2012 With the London 2012 Games just around the corner, the athletics track at the Olympic stadium has just been officially inaugurated. Chris Tomlinson, the British long jump record holder; Hannah England, a silver medallist at the IAAF World Championships; and Dan Greaves, Paralympic discus gold medallist, attended the unveiling of this track, which has a synthetic rubber surface developed to enable athletes to produce fast times next year. Also present were students from nearby schools. During the inauguration, the Chairman of the Organising Committee for the Olympic and Paralympic Games in London in 2012, Sebastian Coe, joined Tomlinson, England, Greaves and the students in the first 100-metre race on the brand new track, before running a full lap with England, a 1,500-metre specialist. YOUTH OLYMPIC GAMES INNSBRUCK 2012 On 5 October, with 100 days to go until the opening of the first Winter Youth Olympic Games (YOG) in Innsbruck, the IOC announced the appointment of Olympic figure skating champion Yuna Kim (photo) as the third ambassador of the Winter YOG. The appointment of the 21year-old Korean champion follows those of the two other YOG ambassadors, Lindsey Vonn and Benjamin Raich, who will play a key role in supporting these first Winter YOG.
