ENVIRONMENTALLY CONSCIOUS, ZERO-WASTE SNOWBOARDS IS WHAT WE DO BEST. Niche is based out of Salt Lake City, Utah, and since 2009 has been dedicated to providing the global snowboard community with a quality product whose environmental impact is lessened by thoughtful design, conscious material selection and the desire to craft quality snowboards. We believe snowboarding and creativity go hand-in-hand, and are passionate about making boards that are lighter, snappier and more durable than most traditionally constructed decks. At Niche Snowboards, we’ve changed the way we think about the relationships between our materials, our environment, and ourselves. We firmly believe that small steps, when multiplied by many people, can change the world. Bottom line, what makes us different is our passion for quality, good design, and making the most environmentally conscious snowboards in the industry. We’re certainly not perfect, but we continually strive to be better, and hope our success will inspire change in the snowsports industry and lead to good things for you and the planet we all share.

WELCOME TO THE TENTH ANNIVERSARY EDITION OF NICHE.
For the past ten years, we have worked tirelessly to bring our initial vision and
goals to life. To prove that it was possible to make more sustainably built snowboards. To push the boundaries of environmentally friendly construction. And to continue to push ourselves forward, knowing that we can continue to do better.
In the time since we started, so much has changed in our own lives, and across the
snowboard industry as a whole. We’ve started families, welcomed new babies and said goodbye to loved ones. We’ve had adventures traveling all over the world, met so many incredible people through snowboarding, and built memories that will last a lifetime. We have seen the influence of our efforts reflected on the snowboard industry, we brought the world’s first zero-waste snowboards to the market, and we look forward to continuing to push the boundaries of what’s possible to make the snowboard industry a better place.
For our tenth anniversary edition of goods this year, we are excited to offer a
limited edition release of some of our most beloved graphics, each of which have received fresh updates, refinements, remixes, and previously unseen versions and pieces of work from the last ten years of Niche. Not everything we are proud of is included, but a few highlights that were particularly special and important to who Niche, and we, have grown from, and into.
Thank you for all the support, love, understanding, patience and kindness you’ve
shown us through all the ups and down the last decade has brought. We look forward to many, many more adventures with all of you, progression of our business, and to coninue to build, shape and influence the industry in as many positive ways as we are able. Thank you for being by our side through all of it.
MANUFACTURING M ad e p r ou d l y i n A u s tr i a.
The smallest of decisions we make on a daily basis matter. At Niche Snowboards, our goal from day one has been to create quality snowboards using environmentally conscious materials and manufacturing practices. We believe in transparency, and that we can always continue to be better. As we go into our tenth year as a company, it’s time we bring ourselves to the next level, and into a new era of design, business, and manufacturing. We are excited to announce a new factory partnership with all of you, that allows us to finally bring our groundbreaking Recyclamine® technology to our entire line of products, meaning that every product Niche makes will be zero-waste and fully recyclable! This is an exciting and monumental step forward for us, and will help bring us all into a better future, together. This
season we are honored to continue working with
European-based
manufacturers; family-owned businesses
with experience making some of the highest quality snowboards for the past
30 plus years.
We work with family owned and operated companies, who have been producing some of the highest end snowboards on the market for the past 30 plus years. They practice spectacular material and resource management and source all raw materials locally, have exceptional social responsibility, have superior supply chain management capabilities, deliver products on time, recycle sidewall materials in-house with their own extrusion line, recycle all the factory’s water, use all FSC certified wood cores and also make all wood cores in house which ends up providing all heating for the factory, and most importantly, together, we will to continue to push our zero-waste manufacturing technology forward, while exploring many new and exciting sustainability projects. We feel that these partnerships are a match made in heaven, and are beyond thrilled to have found homes with likeminded, passionate people, who share our desire to make choices that lessen our impacts on the planet and preserve the climate we need in order to enjoy snowboarding. Working with these manufacturers gives us the ability to continue pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in snowboard manufacturing, and we are excited to see what we can accomplish, together. We are all connected, and we hope to bring you even better products, made proudly in Europe.

RE CYCLAMINE ® T he w o r ld ’ s f ir st t ru e ze r o- w as te s n ow b oa r d m a n u fac tu r i ng.
For a few years now, we’ve been working relentlessly on a big goal: make snowboard manufacturing a zero-waste process. Get manufacturing waste out of landfills. Get end-of-life snowboards out of landfills. Turn these things into new products by recycling them. Close the manufacturing loop and introduce a true cradle-to-cradle system that works. HOW DOES IT WORK? the resins within the snowboard can be dissolved and broken apart using a top-secret solution, enabling us to harvest all structural components and materials. these materials can then be recycled, repurposed or upcycled to create other new products like surfboard fins, binding components, or an unlimited array of possibilities! We are excited to bring 100% recyclable snowboard manufacturing to our entire line of products this season, allowing all manufacturing waste and the product itself to be recycled and repurposed for reuse at the end of its product life cycle. We have teamed up with Connora to apply their Recyclamine® technology into our existing bio-resins to make a groundbreaking shift in snowboard manufacturing, ensuring that nothing we produce ever ends up in a landfill. By
using the recyclamine ® resin system , it is possible to harvest all the raw materials from snowboard
manufacturing to be repurposed or recycled .
Recyclamine® curing agents are the only epoxy hardeners available that enable full recyclability of thermosetting epoxy resins. This technology provides chemical resistance and mechanical properties similar to conventional, non-recyclable amine-cured epoxies. Flexibility, toughness, and low temperature properties are equal or superior to conventional epoxies. Our goal was to create a snowboard that maximized performance while synergistically minimizing all impacts on the environment – a 100% recyclable board using environmentally conscious materials and manufacturing practices. The use of this revolutionary technology provides an end of life solution for snow sports products, and for the waste created during the manufacturing process. We are currently working on creating thoughtful collaborations within the snowsports industry, and look forward to working together to create better manufacturing solutions for us all.

DIGI-PRINT TOPSHEET Most snowboard makers cover their topsheets in a thick, toxic lacquer to add shine. This is not only toxic to the environment; it’s unhealthy for people working in the factory. Digi-Print uses a lacquer-free topsheet material that’s also thinner than most snowboard topsheets. This cuts down on excess material and makes your board lighter. We digitally print directly onto the topsheet, cutting up to 60% of the material and 75% of the energy wasted during alternate printing processes.
SNAPPY SAP™ BIO RESIN Traditional resins can be extremely toxic to people and the environment. For our snowboards, we partnered with Entropy Resins to create our one-of-a-kind, Snappy Sap™ Bio-Resin. As opposed to traditional epoxies made primarily of petroleum-based materials, Snappy Sap™ Bio-Resin is composed of bio-renewable materials from the industrial waste streams of the paper pulp and bio-fuels industry. These natural components help the environment by: • 45% material sourced from sustainable, bio-renewable materials • Lower environmental impact from processing – reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, reduced water and energy consumption, reduced wastes • Eliminates harmful byproducts Snowboard benefits:
WATER-BASED INKS Niche uses non-toxic, solvent-free, waterbased inks for printing graphics on all snowboard production.
6 | MATERIALS
• Increased elasticity – provides more pop and spring to your board • Super high adhesion properties help keep your board from delaminating! • Toughness – combined these benefits make your board bomb proof
BASALT MAGMA FIBER Basalt is the product of volcanic activity. The fiberization process is more environmentally safe than that of glass fiber; the greenhouse gases that might otherwise be released during fiber processing were released eons ago during the magma eruption. Basalt is also 100% inert, which means it has no toxic reaction with air or water, and is noncombustible. And basalt is much easier to recycle than glass. • Our Magma Fiber shows 15-20% higher tensile strength than regular fiberglass. This means better impact absorption, strength, and elasticity. • Because basalt has a greater strength to weight ratio, less is needed to produce a snowboard. And less material means a lighter board! • Basalt does not absorb water. So if you chip your topsheet jibbing some gnar, your board will not absorb water and delaminate!
BASALT STRINGERS
SUSTAINABLE WOOD CORES
Stringers are strips of material that change the personality of a board (i.e. giving a board more pop or more stiffness), and are typically made of carbon fiber or another type of wood. Niche has developed a totally new stringer technology using Basalt fiber!
The forests that our wood cores come from are managed carefully to meet the social, economic, ecological, cultural and spiritual needs of current and future generations. Our wood cores also come from a sustainable source, which means they are replaced by new trees!
Carbon uses lots of energy to process and releases half of its weight in CO2 and other pollutants when manufactured. Basalt is an awesome eco-substitute! Basalt stringers provide similar characteristics to carbon fiber, only they’re made from basalt! They are strong, lightweight, and provide amazing vibration dampening characteristics, giving you a less chattery ride.
Here are some other requirements of our forest management:
RECYCLED MATERIALS Niche uses recycled materials in many components of our snowboard design and production. Such components used in our boards include: • Recycled Base Material • Recycled Steel Edges • Recycled ABS Sidewalls
• No use of hazardous chemicals • No conversion of forests or any other natural habitat • Appropriate management and identification of areas that need special protection (ex. cultural or sacred sites, habitats of endangered animals or plants) • Respect of international workers rights and Human Rights, with particular attention to indigenous peoples • All applicable laws must be followed, with no tolerance for corrupt or questionable business practices
RE CYCLAMINE ® Products using our revolutionary Recyclamine® resin system are able to be fully recycled at the end of their life span and all associated manufacturing waste will be reclaimed and upcycled into new products!

Below the thunders of the upper deep; Far far beneath in the abysmal sea, His ancient, dreamless, uninvaded sleep The Kraken sleepeth; faintest sunlights flee About his shadowy sides; above him swell Huge sponges of millennial growth and height; And far away into the sickly light, From many a wondrous grot and secret cell Unnumber’d and enormous polypi Winnow with giant arms the slumbering green... There hath he lain for ages, and will lie Battening upon huge seaworms in his sleep, Until the latter fire shall heat the deep; Then once by man and angels to be seen, In roaring he shall rise and on the surface die. This graphic was inspired by viking mythology and symbolism. The line of symbols running from tip to tail are the letters of the viking rune alphabet, which were also used for magical purposes. The first systems of writing developed and used by the Norse and other Germanic peoples were runic alphabets. The runes functioned as letters, but they were much more than just letters in the sense in which we today understand the term. Each rune was an ideographic or pictographic symbol of some cosmological principle or power, and to write a rune was to invoke and direct the force for which it stood. Runes were traditionally carved onto stone, wood, bone, metal, or some similarly hard surface rather than drawn with ink and pen on parchment. This explains their sharp, angular form, which was well-suited to the medium. In the pre-Christian Germanic worldview, the spoken word possesses frightfully strong creative powers. As Scandinavian scholar Catharina Raudvere notes, “The pronouncement of words was recognized to have a tremendous influence over the concerns of life. The impact of a sentence uttered aloud could not be questioned and could never be taken back – as if it had become somehow physical. … Words create reality, not the other way around.”

Originally named one of the ‘Top 10 Snowboard Graphics of 2014’ by Snowboard Magazine, this graphic was inspired by old Encyclopdia illustrations. “The meaning of the word encyclopaedia has changed considerably during its long history. Today most people think of an encyclopaedia as a multivolume compendium of all available knowledge, complete with maps and a detailed index, as well as numerous adjuncts such as bibliographies, illustrations, lists of abbreviations and foreign expressions, gazetteers, and so on. They expect it to include biographies of the significant men and women of the present as well as those of the past, and they take it for granted that the alphabetically arranged contents will have been written in their own language by many people and will have been edited by a highly skilled and scholarly staff; nevertheless, not one of these ingredients has remained the same throughout the ages. Encyclopaedias have come in all sizes, from a single 200-page volume written by one man to giant sets of 100 volumes or more. The degree of coverage of knowledge has varied according to the time and country of publication. Illustrations, atlases, and bibliographies have been omitted from many encyclopaedias, and for a long time it was not thought fitting to include biographies of living persons. Indexes are a late addition, and most of the early ones were useless. Alphabetical arrangement was as strongly opposed as the use of any language but Latin, at least in the first 1,000 years of publication in the West, and skilled group editorship has a history of some 200 years.” Warren E. Preece, Robert L. Collison

I enjoy strolling along the narrow path, As it meanders through the forest. It generates a feeling of relaxation, And puts my troubled mind to rest. The forest is peaceful and quiet. I appreciate its immense cover of shade, And I feel focused and comfortable In this sanctuary nature has made. I feel a sense of enchantment In the cool, refreshing air, As I seek the hidden secrets That the forest had to bear. I hear the strange sounds of the forest As I quietly make my way, And stop to observe the wonders Nature unfolds for me this day. I enjoy strolling along the narrow path, It brings a welcome peace of mind to me. I thank the forces of nature For this moment of soothing serenity. Joseph T. in this land Valley of shadows and crows here be dragons that haunt to this very day a child now grown that no one but me remembers and mourns Ronberge (anno primo) The Niche Knew snowboard design was a collaboration between Ana Van Pelt and illustrator Zosia Olenska, and was named one of the 100 Best Pieces of Design in Utah, 2016, by the American Institute of Graphic Arts. The artwork depicts a great dragon, dwelling deep within the forest. In many cultures dragons are viewed as representing the primal forces in nature and the universe. Given the dimensions of the canvas and perspective of the illustration, the artwork was drawn in several pieces and then adjusted and put together to create a single, cohesive, full finished illustration. Some areas are actually several layers of different finished illustrations. The finished graphic took over 120 hours to complete between illustration and coloring. The original completed layout was fully colored, and then converted to greyscale in order to achieve subtle tone variations between the shades of grey, so that the highlights and shadows would add enough depth to the overall graphic. The graphic on the Crux was originally released in the 2016/17 lineup, and was a collaborative work between Niche’s Creative Director, Ana Van Pelt, and Zosia Olenska.

“We know you’ve heard all about the majestic northern lights. Maybe you’ve been lucky enough to view the elusive lights dance across the sky with while displaying varied hues of green, purple, pink and maybe a faint tint of yellow. But how much do you know about the southern lights, otherwise known as the Aurora Australis? What many people don’t realize is that the Southern Hemisphere boasts an atmospheric light display of its own – and it’s just as captivating (if not more impressive). Spoiler alert: both northern and southern lights are both types of Auroras. The main difference? One occurs near the south pole, and the others at the north. The scientific name for the northern lights is Aurora Borealis, while the scientific name for the southern lights is Aurora Australis. Fairly simple, really. That being said, the reason the southern lights are not as popular is due to their extremely remote location, and in turn, are much harder to access for travellers who make the journey thousands of miles away to witness this fascinating occurrence in real life.” Gemma Music, tourradar.com In the sky, an aurora australis takes the shape of a curtain of light, or a sheet, or a diffuse glow.

Part of some previously unreleased illustrations from the 2018/19 line of Niche boards, This is an entirely new graphic remix from another design that was intended to highlight the smallest, most important, wondrous beauty that exists in our world’s forests: fungi. “Fungi are among the most tenacious forms of life, on or off the planet. They’ve been found growing outside an orbiting spacecraft, thriving inside the ruins of the Chernobyl reactor, even in rocks in Antarctica. People can eat only a few types of mushrooms, but some species of fungi can eat just about anything — from nerve gas to plastics. Fungi and bacteria are nature’s recyclers. They feast on dead and decaying plants and animals, transforming the fungal food into essential nutrients and elements plants require. No fungi means no life. The fate of the Earth’s climate literally hangs by threads produced by fungi. These ultra-fine filaments of cells help forests store climate-changing carbon in the ground. The complex process is not well understood by scientists, who estimate there are as many as 3.8 million species of fungi, but so far they’ve identified just 120,000. Thanks to fungi there’s twice as much carbon locked in the ground as in the atmosphere. One square meter of healthy soil can contain 12,000 miles of tangled fungi filament. If Earth has a future, the lowly fungi — unseen, underfoot and still not well understood — will play a crucial role in maintaining that delicate balance.” Bruce Gellerman, wbur.org The graphic on the Wraith was made from originally unreleased work in the 2018/19 lineup, and was created by Niche’s Creative Director, Ana Van Pelt, and features illustrative work by Zosia Olenska.

Collison

I have seen them riding seaward on the waves Combing the white hair of the waves blown back When the wind blows the water white and black. We have lingered in the chambers of the sea By sea-girls wreathed with seaweed red and brown Till human voices wake us, and we drown. T.S. Eliot, 1976 The design on the Minx was created by Ana Van Pelt, featuring illustrative work by Zosia Olenska, and was inspired by the anatomy of the mythical creature, the mermaid. The conception of mermaids in the West may have been influenced by the Sirens of Greek mythology, which were originally half-birdlike, but came to be pictured as half-fishlike in the Christian era. Historical accounts of mermaids, such as those reported by Christopher Columbus during his exploration of the Caribbean, may have been sightings of manatees or similar aquatic mammals. While there is no evidence that mermaids exist outside folklore, reports of mermaid sightings continue to the present day. Rusalkas are the Slavic counterpart of the Greek sirens and naiads. The nature of rusalkas varies among folk traditions. Rusalkas are said to inhabit lakes and rivers. They appear as beautiful young women with long pale green hair and pale skin, suggesting a connection with floating weeds and days spent underwater in faint sunlight.

“What we are doing to the forests of the world is but a mirror reflection of what we are doing to ourselves and to one another.” Chris Maser The artwork on the Nightshade was created by artist Zosia Olenska, and was intended to highlight the smallest, most wondrous beauty that exists in our world’s forests. Forests cover 31% of the land area on our planet. Many of the world’s most threatened and endangered animals live in forests, and 1.6 billion people rely on benefits forests offer, including oxygen, food, fresh water, clothing, traditional medicine and shelter. But forests around the world are under threat from deforestation, jeopardizing these benefits. Deforestation comes in many forms, including fires, clear-cutting for agriculture, ranching and development, unsustainable logging for timber, and degradation due to climate change. Some 46-58 thousand square miles of forest are lost each year—equivalent to 48 football fields every minute. If the current rate of deforestation continues, it will take less than 100 years to destroy all the rainforests on the earth. In 1 year, an acre of healthy, mature trees can store 6 tons of CO 2 and release 4 tons of oxygen. That’s enough to meet the annual needs of 18 people! It can also absorb the amount of CO 2 produced by driving a car 26,000 miles. That’s the approximate distance it takes to drive from Los Angeles to Washington, D.C., and back 10 times.
The graphic on the Nightshade was originally released in the 2018/19 lineup, and was created by UK-based artist, Zosia Olenska.

Huginn and Muninn, over the fields of earth Fly daily; fear creepeth upon my soul, Of Huginn, lest he come not faithfully; But of Muninn I have greater fear than this. 1851 C.P. in The Yale Magazine, Vol. 16 The Song of Grimner The design on the Minx was created by Ana Van Pelt, featuring illustrative work by Zosia Olenska, and was named one of the 100 Best Pieces of Design in Utah, 2015, by the American Institute of Graphic Arts, and featured in The 100 Show. The illustration on the Minx is of the Norse god Odin’s two ravens, Huginn and Muninn. Odin bestowed the gift of speech to his ravens, and each day they would fly all over their world, Midgard, and bring information back to Odin, telling him everything they would see and hear.
