THE THEATER Designed for the “Playful”
The theater explores the possibilities of remodeling the facade of a local theater in the greater Toronto area. The design is heavily influenced by “Play”, incorporating materials, form and a unique sense of exploration within the facade. Features of this design allow it to remain as a functional structure in society but one that deeply contrasts the current composition and culture of Toronto. The concept of “Play” was incorporated in the material and loose exploration of what a structure can be. The organic form as well as the exaggerated materials create the illusion of an accident in design. This Concept envelops its surroundings, extending its reach to parts of the sidewalk giving the sensation of being within the building while still remaining outside its doors.

To whom it may concern, It is without any reservation that I give Nicholas MacIntyre my fullest support in his application for the Southern California Institute of Architecture’s undergraduate program. I had the opportunity to meet Nicholas when he was a student of mine in POP-Arc Toronto’s design camp, which was a one week collaboration between SCI-Arc and Jean Augustine Secondary School in order to educate and broaden young minds on architecture. Within this workshop the main objectives were to teach fundamentals of architecture through one multi-step project. Through the design of a local theater, Nicholas learned digital and physical modeling, advanced program skills such as Rhino, Maya, and Arnold, as well as clear and thoughtful image making and presentation skills. The importance of not only digital craft and physical craft was made, but the importance of line weights and a subjective aesthetic was established. During POP-Arc Toronto, Nicholas quickly adapted to the high level of the camp and distinguished himself in class as a highly talented individual. During the camp, he unquestionably demonstrated evidence of excellence in contemporary design and visualization, making him an ideal candidate for SCI-Arc. I would like to add that during his time in POP-Arc Toronto, he demonstrated diligent behavior and was at the top of his class, despite undertaking the challenge of learning advanced software in a short amount of time. Nicholas’s design, digital skillset, and critical theory work formed during this camp were extremely accomplished. He brought a very high level of dedication to his work, addressing the requirements of the camp in full and, more importantly, establishing a trajectory for his future goals and passion within architecture. He was early everyday and worked longer than any other student, constantly asking questions and pursuing skills beyond the requirements of the camp. I have no doubts that he will excel at SCI-Arc because he brings a deep understanding and passion for architecture along with the determination that is required of any high caliber student. It was a pleasure to have him as a student and it is for these reasons that I think Nicholas would make an EXCELLENT scholarship candidate. I look forward to seeing Nicholas’s work evolve into a unique contribution to contemporary architectural discourse in the context of his academic work, and the opportunity to study at SCI-Arc would enable that to occur. It is without any reservations that I give Nicholas MacIntyre my highest recommendation and my full support. Respectfully submitted, Alayna Davidson POP-Arc Instructor SCI-Arc M.Arch II ‘19

January 22, 2021 Attention: Office of Admissions
To whom it may concern, I’m writing on behalf of applicant Nicholas MacIntyre for the 2021-2022 incoming class. I was one of Nick’s instructor for a SCI-Arc POP-Arc workshop held in Brampton, Ontario in collaboration with the Jean Augustine Secondary School. The workshop titled “thicc.img” was a week-long course focused on architecture’s relationship to image making. A term that best describes Nick is “hungry,” he has a passion for design unlike any student I have had the opportunity of teaching. He is incredibly eager to learn and actively seeks criticism in order to improve, almost to a fault. He was the top student in the workshop cohort. His design teacher, Scott Curie, spoke very highly of Nick, his skill-level, and talent which all became very clear after the first day. He has an incredible attitude, always positive, making jokes, and constantly asking questions that spark important conversations, in essence the hardest-working class clown. He is an absolute pleasure to have in class. Alayna Davidson, my co-instructor, and I both agreed after the workshop that Nick is meant to be an architect. He thinks critically at a high level, is proficient in several 3D modeling software, and makes beautiful hand-drawn sketches of his concepts. Nick’s main concern regarding his education is the cost. I am writing to ask that he be considered for a large if not full scholarship to help him reach his full potential. He is tuned into his intuition as a designer, and wants nothing more than to be formally trained. His ambition, drive, and dedication to his interest are admirable traits. If given the opportunity and support I have no doubt in my mind that he will excel. Thank you for your consideration. All the best,

THE TENT Designed in serach of the “Impression”
The Canvas Tent is dedicated to the search of an “Impression”. The goal of the design is to create a permanent structure that captures the experience of living in Nuuk, Greenland. This project is heavily inspired by the materials utilised in current Nuuk Homes (canvas, concrete, wood, and small quantities of metal due to the environment). The Canvas Tent project incorporates many design elements that bridge the gap between modern day Western culture and Nuuk culture. Some of these elements pertain to the addition of a fire space, designed for upwards of 4 people, along with the strategic absence of a private lavatory. This space is made to Introduce modern american culture to the community as well as a noticeable difference in lifestyle. As a significant influence in Nuuk’s local culture, nature becomes a stepping stone and inspiration for the design, allowing for architecture to create an idea or evoke a feeling without conscious thought, or otherwise known as an “Impression.”

THE HILLSIDE GREENHOUSE Designed for the “Living” Enveloped by greenery on a hillside amongst a diversified site, The Hillside Greenhouse takes full advantage of its site conditions and limitations. Designed for “The Living,” this space is designed with the intention of encouraging the interaction of life and local history within a structure in order to create an enticing environment. Inspired by the simple barn, The Hillside Greenhouse fosters an environment that welcomes different forms of life, opposing the typical greenhouse, which generally refrains from allowing elements of nature around it to enter the space. The Hillside Greenhouse is designed to withstand and manipulate wind currents within the structure, as well as allow for solar gain to the life inside, including the Individual. As an exploration of transparency within a structure, the large retractable glass doors on the North, West, and South faces of the structure allow for the individual to experience a deeper connection to nature. The structure can be used as a private, intimate space for an individual or it can be used as a communal space encouraging connection, person to person, or person to nature.

COFFEE BREWER Designed for the “Unproductive”
The Coffee Brewer introduces a modernized take on the traditional pour-over coffee maker. Designed for the “unproductive”, designed for the artist. Drawing inspiration from the word “Contemporary”, to be or belonging to the present moment. The intent of this pour-over coffee design is to create an experience that grounds the artist, bringing them back to the present moment by utilizing materials, sensation, and form. The glass exterior experiences a fluctuation in wall thickness throughout the design, which is intended to provide the user with a noticeable amount of control through the weight distribution in the form. The material palette is explicitly chosen to promote a sense of warmth and comfort where the user comes in contact with the design (the wood exterior as well as the soft plastic handle). This design’s focus is to develop a sense of commodity during the brewing process through material, shape, organic form, and weight.

THE NIKE BOTTLE Designed for the “Active”
Despite being designed for the Active consumer, the Nike Bottle’s comfortable design allows it to be practical for individuals of all lifestyles. The design is a simple and clean balance of materials as well as form. Heavily influenced by ergonometric forms and the behavior of the human hand, the form of the bottle makes it especially appealing to the active lifestyle. The form has a slight concave inwards towards the middle allowing for both the top and bottom portions of the bottle to stop the hand from sliding up and down during activity or for day to day use. The materials utilized are specifically chosen to promote long term usage, as well as to directly promote Nike’s slogan, “Just Do It”. The materials are both cold and enticing, promoting an active lifestyle for the active consumer.

A STUDY OF LIGHT Designed for the “Eye”
The goal of this task is to demonstrate concepts that can be valued as a creator as well as photographing it in a way that highlights them. The Puzzle is an object that demonstrates uniqueness, complexity as well as simplicity all in one object. This concept of Clashing elements to make a balanced piece of design is a particularly difficult task. This project is dedicated to the “Eye”, a study of light.
