Accra Scholar Housing

Decommissioned US Embassy Redesign

3

The retired United States Embassy located in Accra, Ghana was used to re-envision a diplomatic structure to become a residential living expansion. My design group chose to create Scholar Housing for built environment students attending a college within walking distance in Accra. The eight thousand square foot elevated form became the central communal space for the students. With the lack of green spaces located in the heart of this very humid climate region of Ghana, our group decided to make a mini oasis by expanding our design based on the original grid system to the edges of the site. To house the students seven pods were created which raised them eight feet above the ground. To travel through the site a ramp and catwalk system was used along with placing three species of trees to shade the site and allow students to feel as if they are experiencing a tree house atmosphere in the fast moving city of Accra.

Lakeside Library

Tempe Town Lake Library & Communal Landscape

A library is a consistently evolving learning environment. My vision of the lakeside library, which is located on Tempe Town Lake, is to create a welcoming environment that is not only about learning. This structure’s form was created by pushing all of its service spaces, which included extended learning classrooms and a lecture hall, to the exterior of the form to allow for one large, fluid space. This creates a multi-use area that gives individuals of all ages the opportunity to relax, learn, or engage with their community. Following this form, I created two exterior spaces on its east and west faces. To the west I have designed a large outdoor covered seating area that extends onto the lake. Then, to the east, I have designed an outdoor enclosed reading space that has views of the lake. Incorporating these ideas gives the community more activities to enjoy on the lake.

Foundation A solid foundation of knowledge for all individuals.

Adapting Connecting Adapting to current times by becoming an Hosting a community in one central space inclusive environment with extended to blur the lines of age, social status, and learning for all individuals. knowledge level will allow for greater community engagement.

This pavilion was designed to be an outdoor classroom placed on the ASU campus, more specifically the West Campus. This site is located on the north-west edge of campus, next to the Herberger Young Scholars Academy. While following ASU’s design constraints we also had to design in modularity and the project geometry needed to be made of triangles. The concept was not only to create outdoor classrooms but also to create an exterior sculpture garden to allows the young scholar students and the college students to have a relaxing space to enjoy while spending time outside of the classrooms.

90 Day Bridge Housing

Nightly Shelter

In this northern site I created a 90 day bridge housing focused primarily on families and unaccompanied youth. The building is a three story complex with all its services located on the ground level. The second floor has large units with 2 bedrooms to accommodate larger families with children. The single bedroom units are placed on the top floor and can be used for youth and smaller families. The complex includes a two-story day care facility along with a playground for the children which is located above the parking lot. The large atrium was created to allow the natural light and air to pass through the facility as well as the intent being to create a calmer and quieter space for those entering the facility.

The intent of this existing building is for Andre House to house 80 individuals nightly. Although a majority of people in the area who are homeless are men, they still hope for a split, dedicating half the beds to women and the other half to men. In my design I have included 82 beds. The individual beds are separated by a small partition wall and each include a locker. After entering the building, the men and women go in separate directions to their dedicated areas. On the second floor exterior is a terrace that overlooks the green spaces throughout the campus.

Unison Theatre

Roosevelt Row Theatre & Art Center

29

Located at the corner of Roosevelt and 2nd Street in Phoenix, Arizona, this five-story building works to welcome artists to flourish in Roosevelt Row. To utilize the site’s current theme of a public space, I created an indoor-outdoor approach with a public landscape along with an exterior performance space for those performing during First Fridays. Upon entering the building, your experience continues with each level dedicated to a different art discipline. A large gallery space, dance classrooms, a cafe with a spacious outdoor terrace, and a 250 seat proscenium-style theatre with great lobby spaces. Lastly, it houses dedicated classrooms and studio spaces. While enjoying these interior performances, you can view performances occurring on the street through the open staircase and large curtain walls, making this building seamlessly connect to Roosevelt Row.
