DESIGN

CONCEPT

The inspiration for the design of our hospital was the Niger River, being the location of the regional context in the Niger River Delta. This river is the third longest in Africa and flows through the country of Nigeria making an elegant “s” shaped curve. The great river has supported life and trade in the region. Our inspiration for the inpatient unit tower mimicks the flow of the river since Akwa Ibom is part of the Niger River Delta. It not only represents the delta region but what Akwa Ibom is known for and it’s inhabitants, a symbol of hope and healing waters. The top views show the view of our hospiatl from the southwest main intersection with the main entrance shown in the front and parking garage on the right. The images on the far left shows our hospital from the northeast perspective looking south. The emergency unit and dropoff is on the west side along with the helipad that will be located directly adjacent. The rooftops of levels two and four will feature rooftop gardens/healing spaces.

Patient Restroom: The restroom shares plumbing system with the other room. A shower, sink and toilet is provided for the patient. Patient Bed: Hospital bed that rotates 360 around the room for transportation. Sink, Storage & Disposable: Used for sanitation, & disposing trash used by nurses or others. Built in cabinets for multipurpose storage. Patient & Visitor Desk: Usually family members need a work space while visiting the patient. The desk is available for the patient and visitors for any useful purpose. Small Living Room Area: Available for visiting family members for daily or over night visits. Wall Panel : Shares the outlets, and electrical equipment with the other room. This is important for the equipment a patient needs for care.

Curtain Wall: Floor to ceiling window provides optimal natural lighting and scenic views of nature.

SECTION + STRUCTURE

The structural material that we determined is best suited to produce our hospital is concrete. The affordability and wide-spread utilization of concrete in Nigeria is the main factor in our decision. The concrete structure is shown on the left looking at the hospital from the northeast. The louver system is also shown that will protect our inpatient tower’s east and west facades.

The structural framing plan is based on a nine meter grid with the inpatient tower “s” shaped curve grid determined by the inpatient room layout. The three dimensional model of the architectural, structural, and mechanical elements will help implement construction and maintence of the building throughout it’s existence.

URBAN CONTEXT The design and development of the Natatorium reshapes the traditional swiming experience by utilizing public spaces facilitate the connection between the local east side community and greater urban areas. The Natatorium is located on East Sixth Street in the center of the city east of Interstate 35 and downtown Austin. The location is ideal for pedestrians and vehicular traffic as well due to the urban proximity.

PHASE 01 - ANALYSIS OF SITE CONTEXT: SIXTH STREET AND SURROUNDINGS

PHASE 02 - GROUND FLOOR CREATES TWO PUBLIC PLAZAS

PHASE 03 - FIRST AND SECOND FLOORS FOR HOUSING, RETAIL, AND OFFICES

PHASE 04 - CANOPY STRUCTURE PROVIDES RELIEF FROM DIRECT SUNLIGHT, FILTERING IN NORTH SUN.

PLAÇA AQUÀTICA URBAN NATATORIUM

1001 EAST 6TH ST. AUSTIN, TX

East Sixth Street has a very unique vibe and contains many interesting places to visit. The connection to downtown Austin as you head west on Sixth is very abrupt with Highway acting as a barrier. The proposed Natatorium seek to connect the urban downtown area and East Sixth Street community. The transition from day to night life is an important aspect that will give the area more overall use, breathing life into the community during both the day and night through various functions. The olypic and recreationals size pools provide exercise and extra curricular activities while acting as a plaza that contains cafes, restaurants, and bar for night use. This Urban Natatorium seeks to redefine the concept of the swimming center by incorporating public spaces and plaza experienceto connect the city of Austin’s urban and local communites through multifunctional spaces.

STEEL CONNECTIO NS ADVANTAGES OF BOLTS

-only works if the materials are the same. -Cheaper and requires no skilled laboer -takes less time to assemble

DISADVANTAGES OF BOLTS

-Bolting two components is not permanent. -The parts can be readily diassembled if one of them is damaged or the parts have reached their service. -Have a lot of stress and once one needs repair all need repairs ADVANTAGES OF WELDING -Once welded = always welded -Depending on the welding method used welding can create a continous joint with little stress. DISADVANTAGES OF WELDING -Only works if the materials are the same. -Expensive STEEL STRUCTURE ADVANTAGES: -High Strength/weight ratio: there is little dead weight of a steel strucutre. -Ductility: Steel can undergo large deformation before failure, which prevents sudden failure and will show visible warning signs such as deflection before a failure. -Predictable Material Properties - In contrast to reinforced concrete, the properties of steel have no considereable change over time. -Construction: The speed of steel structure is must faster and results in a quicker payoff economically. -Adaptability: Steel can be prefabricated and mass produced -Ease of Repair: Steel Structures can be repaired quickly and easily

DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION OF NATATORIUM THROUGH BIM (BUILDING INFORMATION MODELING) SUN ANALYSIS OF EAST POOL @ 8AM

BIM IS AN INTEGRATED AP PROACH UTILIZING ONE COHER ENT SYSTEM OF COMPUTER MODELS rather than as seaparate sets of drawings. BIM uses three-di mensional,real-time dynamic building modeling software to increase productivity in the design and construction stages. This digital representation of physical and functional characteristics forms a shared resource that not only saves time and money, but also better accurracy that will be used to build and maintain the building in the future.
